Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome to part two of Richard Speck. Today, we're going
- 0:09Speaker 1: to pick up from where we left off in part one,
- 0:12Speaker 1: so if you haven't listened to it yet, be sure
- 0:14Speaker 1: to go check it out. We're going to pick up
- 0:16Speaker 1: right where we left off as he's on his way
- 0:18Speaker 1: to go commit mass murder.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Warning.
- 0:23Speaker 1: The following podcast contains graphic content and material intended for
- 0:29Speaker 1: a mature audience listener discretion. Hey, how's it going. My
- 0:52Speaker 1: name's Ben.
- 0:53Speaker 2: And I'm Nicole, and you're listening to Wicked and.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Grim, a true crime podcast. Can you hear that?
- 1:00Speaker 2: I can't hear it?
- 1:00Speaker 1: A little tinkle tinkle in the glass today.
- 1:02Speaker 2: A little but a different sound for you.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Just as refreshing, though.
- 1:06Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:07Speaker 1: It almost had tea today, though maybe next time. I
- 1:11Speaker 1: was gonna have a tea, but then I had tea
- 1:13Speaker 1: like an hour earlier, and I was like, well, I
- 1:15Speaker 1: don't want another cup of tea.
- 1:17Speaker 2: So we actually drink a lot of tea in this house.
- 1:19Speaker 1: We do. Tea's delicious and it's good for you.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah, we like it. It's like a warm hug and a cup.
- 1:26Speaker 1: But that's a good way of describing it. But that's
- 1:27Speaker 1: that's how I feel about coffee though, Oh.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Okay, actually that's how I feel about hot chocolate.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Just all the above. Warm drinks, warm drinks.
- 1:36Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:37Speaker 1: But like for me with coffee, it's not like it's
- 1:39Speaker 1: a oh I need coffee to wake up, a caffeine,
- 1:41Speaker 1: you know. It's it's the ritual thing for me. It's
- 1:44Speaker 1: you wake up, you have that nice hot beverage in
- 1:46Speaker 1: your cup, and it's just like so earthy and so grounding.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It's just a warm hug in the morning.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Give it. When you have it in the afternoon, that's
- 1:55Speaker 2: to wake your ass up.
- 1:57Speaker 1: If I have it in the afternoon, it's usually I
- 2:00Speaker 1: could use a little bit of a pick me up.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, yeah, or not a hug just to pick
- 2:05Speaker 2: me up at that point.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Pretty much pretty much don't generally need it. It's I
- 2:09Speaker 1: want it, you know. It's I want that feeling again.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Oh my god, it's almost sad.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess it kind of does sound sad now
- 2:22Speaker 1: that I really think of it, taking a step back
- 2:24Speaker 1: and look at it. Oh yeah, So that's that's my
- 2:27Speaker 1: story for coffee. Actually, speaking of stories, we got to
- 2:32Speaker 1: ask you.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Guys transition there.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I think it almost like I set.
- 2:36Speaker 2: It up pretty much, but I didn't.
- 2:40Speaker 1: We got to ask you, guys. We're looking for some
- 2:42Speaker 1: listener tales, so we want you to submit some listener
- 2:45Speaker 1: tales over to us on our email. To shoot us
- 2:48Speaker 1: an email with some spooky stories or some creepy stuff
- 2:52Speaker 1: that's happened to you in your lifetime, some experiences. Send
- 2:55Speaker 1: it to us over at Wicked and Grim podcast at
- 2:57Speaker 1: gmail dot com. We're going to be going through some
- 3:00Speaker 1: listener tail stuff for Halloween week.
- 3:02Speaker 2: So yeah, it's gonna be specifically right now, I guess
- 3:05Speaker 2: for Halloween week. Yeah, and depending how many we get,
- 3:08Speaker 2: we may have to have to choose.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah, So it's not guaranteed you're going to be in
- 3:13Speaker 1: the episode with your story. I wish we can guarantee everybody,
- 3:16Speaker 1: but it's unfortunately not the nature of the beast. So
- 3:19Speaker 1: you have the opportunity to potentially be in an episode
- 3:23Speaker 1: as we do a listener tale thing for Halloween a week.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and we put this out on Patreon already, so
- 3:28Speaker 2: we've had a couple submitted from our patrons.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and there's some good stories already.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so kind of cool.
- 3:35Speaker 1: It's kind of weird some of the shit that happens
- 3:37Speaker 1: to people. It's like, how like you can't explain most
- 3:40Speaker 1: of this shit, it's so crazy. Yeah, like me and
- 3:43Speaker 1: my Sasquatch story, I don't.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Feel like I have any story like that, Like there's
- 3:48Speaker 2: I don't feel like there's anything I could submit that
- 3:51Speaker 2: would be of interest. Nothing, I don't think so well.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I mean you kind of do. It's not like it
- 3:57Speaker 1: happened to you yet.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Okay, at this I don't think it's gonna happen.
- 4:01Speaker 1: But that in itself is a fucking weird ass story.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Not really, I don't think.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Okay, we'll quickly catch them up like an elevator pitch
- 4:08Speaker 1: on what it would be your story?
- 4:10Speaker 2: Well, gosh, it was so long ago, but at different
- 4:13Speaker 2: periods of time, I had gone to psychics, like two
- 4:17Speaker 2: different ones, and they had both basically kind of seemed
- 4:21Speaker 2: like I was hard to read that if I wanted to,
- 4:24Speaker 2: like I could tap into like some psychic ability of
- 4:26Speaker 2: my own, and that at some point I would basically
- 4:30Speaker 2: walk in to a room and I would see something
- 4:35Speaker 2: that no one else would see that would scare the
- 4:37Speaker 2: shit out of me. Yep, and that has yet to happen.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So it's like, are these people just like putting me
- 4:43Speaker 2: on edge for the next like how many years of
- 4:45Speaker 2: my life?
- 4:46Speaker 1: Maybe what you saw was how absolutely handsome I am
- 4:50Speaker 1: and it scared the shit out of you with just
- 4:52Speaker 1: how handsome I am.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Well, it's funny too, because maybe it has happened, and
- 4:56Speaker 2: like I didn't realize that I was the only one
- 4:58Speaker 2: that saw it and it didn't scare me, Like who knows.
- 5:01Speaker 1: That's very possible, like a whole sixth sense scenario sort
- 5:03Speaker 1: of thing.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Lots of times I'm kind of oblivious because I just
- 5:05Speaker 2: have like way too much shit going on in my brain.
- 5:08Speaker 2: My brain never shuts the fuck up, so I don't
- 5:11Speaker 2: even know. If I maybe I wouldn't have even noticed.
- 5:14Speaker 1: There's a potential of that.
- 5:16Speaker 2: So that's not really a very exciting story because nothing
- 5:19Speaker 2: exciting has really happened.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's like a very suspenseful story. It's like
- 5:23Speaker 1: when is something going to happen?
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, And sometimes I'm like, gosh, do I want to
- 5:27Speaker 2: put myself in that situation? What if it's now?
- 5:30Speaker 1: Well, I wouldn't want that to be me with this
- 5:33Speaker 1: unknown Is something going to happen at any moment?
- 5:36Speaker 2: Yeah? No, fangs, I know, I know and I have
- 5:39Speaker 2: put myself in some situations too where with ghosts could
- 5:41Speaker 2: be like I had gone to Alcatraz, which I'm sure. Yeah,
- 5:44Speaker 2: if a ghost is gonna be somewhere, there's gonna be
- 5:46Speaker 2: a ghost there for sure.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Yeah. And Barkerville, the local Barker.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I forgot about Barkerville.
- 5:51Speaker 1: How could you forget about Barker. I don't know.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I'm obsessed with that place. If you ever get the
- 5:54Speaker 2: chance to go to Barkerville, like you must, Yeah, we'll be.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Going there in the near future for sure.
- 5:59Speaker 2: And there bakery is amazing, like, oh yeah, go hungry,
- 6:03Speaker 2: Like it's getting better every year, is it.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I haven't gone for what like two years now?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been too long.
- 6:08Speaker 1: We also got to give a shout out to our patrons,
- 6:11Speaker 1: of course, as we always do. We had a few
- 6:13Speaker 1: more patrons sign up this week. We have Ashley, Justine Smith,
- 6:18Speaker 1: and Eleanor love the name Eleanor by the way.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, well in all of those like you nail the names.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Those are razy, Paisy.
- 6:25Speaker 1: They were not challenging names at least I think unless
- 6:29Speaker 1: Justine Smith is like it's actually just Steiny Smithy or
- 6:33Speaker 1: something like that. And I just butchered it, and who knows,
- 6:36Speaker 1: You never know because there is different pronunciation.
- 6:39Speaker 2: There absolutely is, and yeah, and lots of times to
- 6:41Speaker 2: the way we pronounce stuff in Canada is different from
- 6:43Speaker 2: how they pronounce it in other areas of the world exactly.
- 6:46Speaker 1: So it's roll the dice a lot of the times.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Yeah, but honestly, we appreciate, Yeah, we do.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Even if we say your name right or wrong. We
- 6:54Speaker 1: still love you no matter what. There you go, even
- 6:56Speaker 1: if you're not on Patreon, you just listen to us.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Still love you. You're still awesome, You're still wicked.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Stay wicked.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Hey, that's the end of the episode.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Bye, okay, bye, have a good night. Could you imagine,
- 7:07Speaker 2: oh my gosh, I met I wonder Kate. It would
- 7:09Speaker 2: be funny. Okay, not really funny, but it would be
- 7:11Speaker 2: funny to put something out there like that just to
- 7:13Speaker 2: see how many emails we got where people were just
- 7:15Speaker 2: like the fuck jinks.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Wow. Okay, Well, I think that's enough of our shenanigans.
- 7:22Speaker 1: We're almost seven minutes into this.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Let's go. Let's say, Yeah, we need to recap two
- 7:26Speaker 2: of what happened on part one here.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So part one it's kind of hard to really recap
- 7:32Speaker 1: in detail of what part one was true. But basically,
- 7:35Speaker 1: we have this individual named Richard Speck growing up. By
- 7:39Speaker 1: the time he was about six years old, he was
- 7:41Speaker 1: your average, regular little boy. His dad unfortunately passed away
- 7:44Speaker 1: from a heart attack. Then he had the step dad
- 7:47Speaker 1: kind of come in who was an alcoholic, kind of
- 7:49Speaker 1: a no good kind of.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Person, wasn't it, Carl.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I believe it was a Carl. Yes, not cool Carl.
- 7:55Speaker 2: We got to keep that trend going here.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And growing up from there on out, his life kind
- 8:00Speaker 1: of took a turn for the worse, committing petting crimes
- 8:03Speaker 1: left right and center, and he began to in his
- 8:07Speaker 1: older years commit things like assault and rape. So all
- 8:14Speaker 1: the while he was unable to hold a job because
- 8:16Speaker 1: of his attitude towards women in life and everything in general.
- 8:20Speaker 1: He just became an all around dick head douche canoe. Yeah,
- 8:23Speaker 1: and here we are today where he is dressed all
- 8:26Speaker 1: in black after raping an individual and stealing her twenty
- 8:30Speaker 1: two caliber pistol. He now has this pistol in hand
- 8:33Speaker 1: with his switchblade in the other hand, dressed in all black,
- 8:36Speaker 1: heading on his way to where he's going to commit
- 8:40Speaker 1: mass murder to.
- 8:41Speaker 2: A nursing school or not nursing school but nursing.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Housing um or something townhouse.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yeah, oh my gosh, okay, yeah, that you left. I
- 8:53Speaker 2: remember now it's coming back to me here because it
- 8:55Speaker 2: kind of just like toned it out a little bit
- 8:57Speaker 2: because I needed to. But this is going to get
- 8:59Speaker 2: real shitty.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Well, and it was a lot of like information overload
- 9:02Speaker 1: in the other one. It was just more so on Richard,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and unfortunately this is still a Richard heavy episode. I
- 9:10Speaker 1: wanted it to be more about a survivor in this episode,
- 9:13Speaker 1: but there's not a whole lot of detail on her.
- 9:16Speaker 1: So I'm just going to kind of respect that, talk
- 9:18Speaker 1: about her as much as we know, and give her
- 9:20Speaker 1: her space as do as well.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yeah that honestly, sometimes when people go through terrible things,
- 9:27Speaker 2: they probably just want to move on or as much
- 9:30Speaker 2: as they can, not that they totally can at all,
- 9:32Speaker 2: but like you know, they don't want to be on
- 9:34Speaker 2: podcasts maybe exactly.
- 9:36Speaker 1: So she's going to be our badass of the day.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you that right now. But we'll
- 9:43Speaker 1: get to that, Okay. So we're starting off on the
- 9:46Speaker 1: evening of July thirteenth, in nineteen sixty six, just after
- 9:50Speaker 1: ten pm. Richard is dressed all in black and armed
- 9:53Speaker 1: with his usual switchblade and the new twenty two caliber
- 9:57Speaker 1: pistol that we just mentioned. He had spent most of
- 10:00Speaker 1: his day drinking and was now making his way down
- 10:03Speaker 1: the street towards a townhouse complex. Now, the complex was
- 10:07Speaker 1: about a mile walk from where he was staying, and
- 10:09Speaker 1: it functioned as a dormhouse for nine nursing students students
- 10:13Speaker 1: that attended the South Chicago Community Hospital. The nine students
- 10:17Speaker 1: were busy studying for their upcoming exams, all the good
- 10:21Speaker 1: stuff that comes along with being a student. Right now,
- 10:24Speaker 1: it was about eleven PM that Richard arrived at the home.
- 10:28Speaker 1: He knew exactly where it was, he knew exactly where
- 10:30Speaker 1: he was going, and when he got there, he knew
- 10:32Speaker 1: he needed to make his entrance as quiet as possible. Now,
- 10:35Speaker 1: the front door would draw far too much attention, and
- 10:38Speaker 1: he needed to get inside without being noticed, so he
- 10:42Speaker 1: went to the back of the building. He used his
- 10:45Speaker 1: switchblade to pry open a windows screen and he crawled inside.
- 10:52Speaker 1: He crept through the shadows of the unlit area on
- 10:54Speaker 1: the main floor and began slowly climbing the stairs to
- 10:57Speaker 1: the top floor, where all the rooms were. He came
- 11:01Speaker 1: across the first door and he moved towards it. He
- 11:04Speaker 1: weighed his options. Should he barge in or should he wait?
- 11:09Speaker 1: He knew there were multiple residents of the house. As
- 11:12Speaker 1: I had mentioned, He knew where this place was, and
- 11:14Speaker 1: he had passed it many times before on his way
- 11:17Speaker 1: to and from a finding work and over to his
- 11:19Speaker 1: hotel room. He knew who resided inside, so he didn't
- 11:25Speaker 1: really want to wait either though. He had an agenda
- 11:27Speaker 1: and he wanted to act on his sick ideas, so
- 11:32Speaker 1: in order to avoid any immediate suspicion, he acted as
- 11:36Speaker 1: though as he simply belonged. He raised his hand up
- 11:39Speaker 1: to the door and he knocked.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I wasn't expecting that. But I also
- 11:45Speaker 2: just have to say, the idea that you're just like
- 11:48Speaker 2: in your home, like studying, sleeping, whatever, and someone is
- 11:52Speaker 2: like literally lurking around and then gets into your home
- 11:57Speaker 2: is disturbing.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Well, as we talked about in part one, Richard is
- 12:02Speaker 1: about as creepy as you fucking get.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Yeah, so, but the idea of that is just like gosh,
- 12:09Speaker 2: like ha, like I'm in my brain right now, I'm like, Okay,
- 12:14Speaker 2: what the fuck do I need to lock?
- 12:16Speaker 1: We've covered episodes before where it was like you probably
- 12:19Speaker 1: want to lock your like what was that one the
- 12:21Speaker 1: bedroom Strangler? Is that it where it was like the
- 12:24Speaker 1: third or fourth floor?
- 12:25Speaker 2: They come, oh, yeah, there are numerous cases where people
- 12:28Speaker 2: literally like scale buildings. Yeah, like you think you're safe
- 12:31Speaker 2: in like a fourth floor, fifth floor, sixth floor, whatever, balcony,
- 12:34Speaker 2: you're freaking not like lock your door.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Yeah, even your balcony door, because they like you said.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Scale and then like you need a window that freaking
- 12:41Speaker 2: locks as well. Apparently yep.
- 12:44Speaker 1: So well, I'm pretty sure most windows nowadays do lock.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Two Yeah, but this was kind of like like a.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Little bit older, but cas well and windows do get
- 12:53Speaker 1: left open or whatever.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Oh yeah, So so he knocks on the fucking door.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Yeah, he knocks on the door, and a moment later
- 13:02Speaker 1: the door opened up. Now in front of Richard stood
- 13:05Speaker 1: a twenty three year old Filipino exchange student nurse by
- 13:09Speaker 1: the name of Corazanto Amaro. Now, Richard wasted no time.
- 13:14Speaker 1: The first thing Corazon saw when she opened the door
- 13:17Speaker 1: was the twenty two caliber pistol pointed directly at her face.
- 13:22Speaker 1: She was left with no other choice but to comply
- 13:25Speaker 1: with Richard's demands.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Oh Man, and.
- 13:28Speaker 1: What he wanted was for her to help gather up
- 13:31Speaker 1: all of her other housemates.
- 13:34Speaker 2: See, I don't know. I feel like in that scenario,
- 13:37Speaker 2: like if you just made a ton of noise and
- 13:40Speaker 2: just started freaking out, like I mean, yeah, I guess
- 13:44Speaker 2: that he would have shot. He could have shot. You
- 13:46Speaker 2: should be dead, I guess. I don't know. Sometimes though,
- 13:51Speaker 2: with attackers, it seems like if you make a huge
- 13:53Speaker 2: fussy he could have got scared and run away. That's true,
- 13:57Speaker 2: But you are rolling the dice yep.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Yeah, because you're probably you have a gun in your face.
- 14:03Speaker 2: You're probably going to freeze, and you're just going to
- 14:06Speaker 2: freeze too when you see that.
- 14:09Speaker 1: So I mean, like I said, gun in her face,
- 14:11Speaker 1: and like you said, she froze. Yeah, So she had
- 14:14Speaker 1: no other choice. One by one, she led him around
- 14:17Speaker 1: the house and they woke five other nursing students.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yikes.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Now, the five women were Matilda Garulo, who is twenty three,
- 14:25Speaker 1: Valentina Passen who is twenty three, Patricia Mettusik who is twenty,
- 14:31Speaker 1: Pamela Wilkening, who is twenty and Nina Joe Schmail, who
- 14:36Speaker 1: is twenty four. Then he brought them into the largest
- 14:40Speaker 1: room in the house and he began to tie them up. Now,
- 14:44Speaker 1: he wasn't able to complete this task very easy though,
- 14:47Speaker 1: he would have to put his gun down to do this,
- 14:52Speaker 1: So while using his knife to cut strips from a
- 14:54Speaker 1: bed sheet to tie them up, he never let his
- 14:58Speaker 1: gun be very far away from him. He kept it
- 15:01Speaker 1: close enough so that in an instant he could reach
- 15:04Speaker 1: over and grab it and have it at any moment. Yeah.
- 15:07Speaker 2: But also the fact that he didn't have anything just
- 15:09Speaker 2: ready to tie them up, like he really doesn't seem
- 15:13Speaker 2: to he really thought about it that much through.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Well, he's done this before. He used someone's housecoat and
- 15:20Speaker 1: cut it in strips to.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Tie them up.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Okay, so this is his method almost kind of like
- 15:27Speaker 1: a calling card of his fucking scenario.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I hate that, hate that. Yeah, okay, and sorry,
- 15:33Speaker 2: how many people does he have in the freaking living
- 15:35Speaker 2: room right now?
- 15:36Speaker 1: Well, he went gathered five up with the help of Corazones,
- 15:39Speaker 1: so he has currently six.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Six nursing students.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Okay. So needless to say, though, like women are terrified
- 15:45Speaker 1: as they're systematically having their hands bound behind their backs
- 15:48Speaker 1: and ankles cinched tight together.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I could only imagine.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Yeah, they were no doubt scared, but the women managed
- 15:56Speaker 1: to keep calm and they tried to talk to Richard.
- 15:59Speaker 1: So far, he seemed very calm himself and was talking
- 16:02Speaker 1: very gently, and it's very reminiscent of how he had
- 16:06Speaker 1: treated some other victims in the past as well, one
- 16:09Speaker 1: of them being are saying that he was almost like
- 16:11Speaker 1: a gentleman.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Oh yeah, like almost kind So.
- 16:15Speaker 1: It's the same sort of situation. He had them all
- 16:18Speaker 1: sitting on the floor, and he actually sat down on
- 16:20Speaker 1: the floor as well on the other end of the room.
- 16:22Speaker 1: He lit up a cigarette and he chatted with the women.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Wow also reassured them that he didn't want to hurt anyone.
- 16:28Speaker 1: He just wanted some money so he could leave town
- 16:30Speaker 1: on a ship to New Orleans. His conversation and lighthearted
- 16:35Speaker 1: demeanor was easily reflected in the way that the six
- 16:39Speaker 1: women spoke back to him. Now, after all, he was
- 16:43Speaker 1: talking to multiple nursing students, students who would have gone
- 16:46Speaker 1: through training and classes based on dealing with patients who
- 16:50Speaker 1: are going through things like trauma, anxiety, and I'm sure
- 16:54Speaker 1: a whole other plethora of emotions. Yeah, so psychology was
- 16:57Speaker 1: their weapon of choice in this situation. They kept calm,
- 17:02Speaker 1: they talked compassionately, compassionately with him, They joked, they tried
- 17:06Speaker 1: and you know, laughing and being light hearted or doing
- 17:08Speaker 1: whatever they need to, and they complied with his requests.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Their hopes were that he would simply tie them up,
- 17:15Speaker 1: take some of the possessions around the house, and then
- 17:17Speaker 1: be honest.
- 17:18Speaker 2: And then honestly, that's very impressive, it is. And they
- 17:21Speaker 2: probably just the fact though, how he sounds when he's
- 17:24Speaker 2: like talking to people, and like the situation, the vibe
- 17:27Speaker 2: or whatever of what's going on, you almost probably think
- 17:30Speaker 2: in your head, Okay, this isn't going to go that badly,
- 17:33Speaker 2: that's right.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Yeah, And their hopes are probably up because they're probably
- 17:37Speaker 1: seeing this reaction from the individual to training they've received. Yes,
- 17:41Speaker 1: they're like, oh, it's going how it says it goes exactly,
- 17:45Speaker 1: So if we keep this up, we'll be fine. Yeah,
- 17:49Speaker 1: I mean that was their hope.
- 17:51Speaker 2: But well, it makes sense.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It was a far cry from how there soon to
- 17:55Speaker 1: be reality would play out.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Unfortunately, I figured.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Yeah, so soon another housemate would make her way home
- 18:02Speaker 1: from a date with her boyfriend.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Oh man, if only that date lasts longer.
- 18:07Speaker 1: This would be twenty two year old Gloria Jeane Davey.
- 18:10Speaker 1: She was dropped off by her boyfriend and she was
- 18:13Speaker 1: quickly added to the group of captives in the home,
- 18:15Speaker 1: making the total of people in Richard's holding seven individuals.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, that is terrible. Yeah, and the boyfriend,
- 18:23Speaker 2: I can only imagine he's like shit, like if only
- 18:25Speaker 2: I like walked her in, but like you wouldn't think
- 18:27Speaker 2: anything like that would be going on in there.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Yeah, especially like sure you walk her to the front door,
- 18:32Speaker 1: she goes in, yeah, good night. Whatever, she goes into
- 18:35Speaker 1: the house, she doesn't know until she's upstairs. You probably
- 18:37Speaker 1: don't know until you're gone. She probably didn't scream because
- 18:41Speaker 1: she's going to have a gun in her face immediately.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:44Speaker 1: So unless this man went in with her, he wouldn't
- 18:48Speaker 1: have known. And if he went in with her, he
- 18:50Speaker 1: probably would have been right there with the girls, maybe
- 18:53Speaker 1: even shot on spot, who knows.
- 18:54Speaker 2: That's very true. Yep.
- 18:56Speaker 1: So it's definitely not one of those situations where oh
- 19:00Speaker 1: if only, well, if only, it probably would have ended
- 19:03Speaker 1: up being worse honestly.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean, if only the date might have
- 19:07Speaker 2: lasted a smidge longer or something. Is the only if only?
- 19:10Speaker 2: Probably eh? Oh okay, okay, never mind.
- 19:14Speaker 1: No, that wouldn't make a difference either, So Richard instead
- 19:20Speaker 1: beginning to leave them out of the room one by
- 19:22Speaker 1: one instead of just sitting there in the room. He
- 19:27Speaker 1: started by taking Pamela Wilkins out. She wasn't going to
- 19:30Speaker 1: simply just let him be this evil guy though, because
- 19:34Speaker 1: their kind of demeanor had changed, they was no longer
- 19:37Speaker 1: this happy kind individual. He crushed out his cigarette and
- 19:41Speaker 1: started systematically one by one bringing them out.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Okay, so she.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Wasn't gonna let him just be this evil guy without
- 19:48Speaker 1: showing her disgust to him. She would spit in his face,
- 19:51Speaker 1: and she told him to his face that she would
- 19:54Speaker 1: easily pick him out of a lineup. Wow, so good
- 19:58Speaker 1: for her on that.
- 19:59Speaker 2: That is good.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Like she literally hints that he was going to get
- 20:02Speaker 1: caught and go to jail from her own account, so
- 20:06Speaker 1: fuck yeah love that. Richard, however, had a different idea
- 20:10Speaker 1: of how things were going to play out. He started
- 20:13Speaker 1: by pinning her down on the bed in a nearby bedroom,
- 20:17Speaker 1: ready to rape her.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Okay, Martie like confused, though, Can I just ask one
- 20:21Speaker 2: super super quick question here? Yes, So, like he's taking
- 20:24Speaker 2: them one by one and the rest are just like
- 20:26Speaker 2: they can't move in the other room.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I guess, Yeah, they're all tied up.
- 20:29Speaker 2: So they can't do anything.
- 20:31Speaker 1: And I'm sure even if they do get out or whatever,
- 20:34Speaker 1: he's going to hear them coming out of that bedroom.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Okay, So yeah, he's probably thinking that through.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Okay, so he's ready to unfortunately rape this woman who's
- 20:47Speaker 1: bound and at his will. However, it was quickly cut short.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Two more women who lived at the home had arrived
- 20:54Speaker 1: from their evening out, and they happened upon Richard and
- 20:57Speaker 1: Pamela in the room. As they opened it up. In
- 21:00Speaker 1: this instant, all hell broke loose. Oh oh, and the
- 21:06Speaker 1: literal bloodbath would begin.
- 21:10Speaker 2: No, okay.
- 21:11Speaker 1: The two women who entered the home were Suzanne Ferris,
- 21:15Speaker 1: who was twenty one, and Mary Anne Jordan, who was twenty. Now,
- 21:19Speaker 1: they tried to run when they encountered this situation. I
- 21:23Speaker 1: freaking met Richard on top of Pamela, her being tied
- 21:26Speaker 1: up and pinned down, and then opening the door to
- 21:28Speaker 1: this shit. They tried to run, but they didn't make
- 21:31Speaker 1: it far. Richard managed to stop both of them before
- 21:35Speaker 1: they made it farther than the hallway.
- 21:37Speaker 2: How the hell, and.
- 21:38Speaker 1: He stabbed them both a total of twenty times with
- 21:44Speaker 1: his switchblade knife.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Okay, so like shit really really really just hit the fan. Yes,
- 21:50Speaker 2: because he was out of control really at that moment. Yes,
- 21:53Speaker 2: there's two more came in that aren't bound.
- 21:55Speaker 1: And he lost his shit.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Bodies laid lifeless, surrounded by blood, and Richard, with his
- 22:04Speaker 1: knife in hand, turned back towards Pamela, who is tied
- 22:07Speaker 1: up in the bedroom. He was dead set on leaving
- 22:12Speaker 1: no witnesses.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Yeah, my heart, that just like that, just a little
- 22:16Speaker 2: scene you just that makes my heart to sink.
- 22:20Speaker 1: And it's it's super sad because, like you say, you
- 22:23Speaker 1: said earlier, what if someone did scream? What if someone
- 22:27Speaker 1: made a loud enough noise? But these are just what ifs. However, Yeah,
- 22:33Speaker 1: you also have someone on top of you with like
- 22:35Speaker 1: a gun from Corazone who had and these individuals a knife.
- 22:40Speaker 1: You never know, you kind of got to try and
- 22:42Speaker 1: play the cards right.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Well, those two girls that entered later and then we're
- 22:47Speaker 2: basically trying to run a rain being chased. I bet
- 22:49Speaker 2: you they did.
- 22:50Speaker 1: I bet you they did scream, but they still weren't hurt.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:53Speaker 1: So, now after Pamela, he didn't rape her, but he
- 22:58Speaker 1: did murder her. He did stab her with his switchblade
- 23:02Speaker 1: knife multiple times. After he was done, he would wash
- 23:06Speaker 1: his hands of all the blood and clean himself up,
- 23:09Speaker 1: then return back to the room where the rest of
- 23:11Speaker 1: the women waited with in their bonds. He would take
- 23:15Speaker 1: the next out of the room and proceed to stab
- 23:19Speaker 1: her repeatedly.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Holy shit, all.
- 23:23Speaker 1: While the muffled screams were being heard from inside the
- 23:26Speaker 1: room where the woman were laying helpless. And I do
- 23:29Speaker 1: want to highlight muffled screams. They were not heard easily.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 23:37Speaker 1: This happened repeatedly, over and over for the course of
- 23:43Speaker 1: the next four hours.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Holy shit.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Four hours.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. I just can't even I just can't
- 23:53Speaker 2: even imagine this, Like the just the sheer fear that
- 23:57Speaker 2: would be, like this is unbelievable.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Those four hours would feel like an absolute eternity, like absolute,
- 24:04Speaker 1: like every second is going to feel like an hour
- 24:07Speaker 1: on its own.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're literally the whole time trying to figure out,
- 24:10Speaker 2: How the fuck can I get out of this situation?
- 24:12Speaker 1: Yep? So Gloria Dean Davis Jeane Davis excuse me, was
- 24:19Speaker 1: last and she was, unfortunately the women that the woman
- 24:23Speaker 1: that Richard decided to rape. He unleashed everything on.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Gloria, Oh my gosh, anger.
- 24:31Speaker 1: From his past, his terrible job history, his absolute fucking
- 24:35Speaker 1: pathetic view on women, which, if you don't recall from
- 24:39Speaker 1: last episode, in his mind either ye trash or like perfect.
- 24:46Speaker 1: He sexually brutalized her for an extended period of time
- 24:49Speaker 1: before strangling her to death. After he had finished and
- 24:56Speaker 1: there was no one left in the room of captives,
- 24:58Speaker 1: Richard left the house, but not before cleaning himself up
- 25:02Speaker 1: and stealing any valuables he found inside. He walked over
- 25:06Speaker 1: to a nearby bridge not too far from where he
- 25:09Speaker 1: had committed this crime, and chucked his bloody switchblade off
- 25:12Speaker 1: the knife into the water before walking back to his
- 25:15Speaker 1: hotel room for the night.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Okay, was his clothes just not coated as well? Like
- 25:19Speaker 2: just drenched in blood?
- 25:21Speaker 1: Probably, but remember he is wearing all black. You probably
- 25:24Speaker 1: wouldn't see it.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Okay, I never thought about that, could Chane something? I
- 25:29Speaker 2: just saw something out of the corner of my eye outside.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I was just like it was probably to some moth,
- 25:35Speaker 2: but I'm on some serious edge right now.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Well, he would walk back to his hotel room, like
- 25:41Speaker 1: you say, probably coated and blood. Yeah, you don't see it.
- 25:45Speaker 1: But he basically thought he got away with murder. He
- 25:48Speaker 1: committed the perfect crime. He left no witnesses, he got
- 25:51Speaker 1: rid of the murder weapon, everything. But what Richard didn't
- 25:54Speaker 1: know is there was one detail he overlooked. He intended
- 25:59Speaker 1: to kill any witness that night, but he failed on
- 26:03Speaker 1: this task. He left one witness alive. Somehow during the night,
- 26:10Speaker 1: Richard lost count of how many people were in the house.
- 26:14Speaker 2: I was wondering how the hell this happened.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Now, maybe it's because of his blind rage, or perhaps
- 26:20Speaker 1: because of the new faces coming into play twice over
- 26:24Speaker 1: the course of this entire event. But one thing's for sure.
- 26:27Speaker 1: He left behind a witness. While everything was going on
- 26:31Speaker 1: the house, one woman managed to slip his view, and
- 26:37Speaker 1: that was Corazon Amorrowka, a woman who answered the knock
- 26:41Speaker 1: at her door to find Richard standing there with a
- 26:43Speaker 1: pistol in her face.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Oh shit.
- 26:46Speaker 1: At one point she waited until Richard's back was turned
- 26:50Speaker 1: and she rolled underneath the bed in the room that
- 26:52Speaker 1: everyone was held captive. And there she hid and.
- 26:56Speaker 2: She waited seriously. Oh my god. Okay, so she is
- 27:01Speaker 2: super like a bad ass of the day, for sure.
- 27:03Speaker 1: She is one hundred percent the badass of the day
- 27:06Speaker 1: here for these reasons wholeheartedly. But I'm going to tell
- 27:10Speaker 1: you the exact moment where I want to declare it. Okay,
- 27:13Speaker 1: so though she is our badass, I'm not declaring it
- 27:16Speaker 1: just yetka wait for the moment and you'll understand why.
- 27:20Speaker 1: That is the moment that tops it all off. So
- 27:24Speaker 1: she waited for his bag to be turned, hid under
- 27:26Speaker 1: the bed, and there she would wait. She would hear
- 27:28Speaker 1: footsteps come in the room and then leave again. She
- 27:32Speaker 1: would hear screams, then silence, and more footsteps into the room.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Any moment she was expecting to have hands wrap around
- 27:42Speaker 1: her ankles and drag her out from her hiding place.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Uh huh.
- 27:45Speaker 1: She thought there was no way she's getting away with this.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Each breath she took felt like she was literally going
- 27:51Speaker 1: to be breathing her last until she didn't hear any
- 27:56Speaker 1: more footsteps, she didn't hear any more screams, She didn't
- 28:00Speaker 1: hear anything. She stayed hidden under the bed for a
- 28:07Speaker 1: long time, long after Richard was gone, actually unsure if
- 28:13Speaker 1: he was even there. Still, she kept hiding. Eventually hours
- 28:17Speaker 1: had gone by since he had left the house, and
- 28:20Speaker 1: Corizone finally emerged from her hiding place at six a m.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Well, because you have no idea, what if he was
- 28:26Speaker 2: just literally just sleep taking a nap on the freaking coach,
- 28:29Speaker 2: which just happened in some of our cases.
- 28:31Speaker 1: And stuff, exactly. People do stay around, Yeah, who knows, Like, oh,
- 28:36Speaker 1: maybe he was in the room just waiting for her
- 28:39Speaker 1: to come out. Maybe it was a game for him.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Right. That was almost like seven hours ish that she
- 28:44Speaker 2: was under that bed.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Yep.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Wow.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Now when she did get out from underneath the bed,
- 28:50Speaker 1: she didn't calmly and quietly like creep out and sneak
- 28:53Speaker 1: around either. She got up and she bolted to the
- 28:56Speaker 1: nearest window, opened it, leaned outside, and she began screaming
- 29:01Speaker 1: for help. She screamed out into the street below. They
- 29:05Speaker 1: are all dead, My friends are all dead. Oh God,
- 29:09Speaker 1: I'm the only one alive.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, goobs bumps, holy heck.
- 29:13Speaker 1: She continued screaming and didn't stop until police arrived at
- 29:18Speaker 1: the scene. Oh my gosh, so again complete badass. But
- 29:24Speaker 1: we gotta wait for the cherry on top.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Oh, this isn't the cherry.
- 29:27Speaker 1: This isn't the cherry on top. Oh, trust me, she's
- 29:30Speaker 1: a bad asshole.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm just like, what else is gonna happen?
- 29:33Speaker 1: But there's a cherry on top for it all. Just wait,
- 29:36Speaker 1: it's coming up a little bit later, but just wait.
- 29:39Speaker 1: So news sources would of course quickly pick up on
- 29:42Speaker 1: this horrific incident that occurred over the night, and a
- 29:45Speaker 1: manhunt literally began for the individual at large. Now Richard
- 29:49Speaker 1: would shortly thereafter learn that he left behind a survivor
- 29:54Speaker 1: in the house.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Oh man, I would have loved to been a fly
- 29:57Speaker 2: on the wall for that moment.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Of course, the papers the new he was on TV.
- 30:01Speaker 1: He would learn that someone is there to tell about
- 30:04Speaker 1: the story yep. And there's someone to tell who it was,
- 30:08Speaker 1: who did it?
- 30:09Speaker 2: Yep.
- 30:10Speaker 1: So he of course he panicked. He tried to leave
- 30:13Speaker 1: Chicago as quick as he could, and he began by
- 30:17Speaker 1: starting with using a new name. Now he would make
- 30:20Speaker 1: his way down to the skid Row district of Chicago,
- 30:23Speaker 1: where he booked himself a ninety nine cent hotel room
- 30:26Speaker 1: under the name of our Franklin. Now he was desperate
- 30:30Speaker 1: to find his way out of the city, but he
- 30:32Speaker 1: knew public transportation would be crawling with authorities looking for
- 30:37Speaker 1: an individual trying to escape the city. And as time
- 30:41Speaker 1: went on it only got worse. Every moment that passed,
- 30:45Speaker 1: new things came out. The police pulled a total of
- 30:50Speaker 1: thirty three fingerprints from the crime scene. Oh really, thirty
- 30:54Speaker 1: three fingerprints?
- 30:56Speaker 2: He was so that doesn't make any sense because he
- 30:58Speaker 2: thought that he was pretty much like good to go
- 31:00Speaker 2: after this.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Yeah, clearly he's dumb as fuck and no. Yeah, so
- 31:05Speaker 1: they pulled thirty three fingerprints from the scene, and together
- 31:08Speaker 1: with the full description given from Corazone, the prints were
- 31:12Speaker 1: found to be a direct match with Richard spec. Yes,
- 31:18Speaker 1: his criminal history caught up with him and they were
- 31:20Speaker 1: able to identify exactly who he was. So police knew
- 31:24Speaker 1: who he was and now it was just a matter
- 31:27Speaker 1: of finding him.
- 31:27Speaker 2: He's done, You done, buddy, So well.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Richard knew that too. He knew there was absolutely no
- 31:33Speaker 1: way out. It was only a matter of time. But
- 31:36Speaker 1: just like the night of his crime, he didn't intend
- 31:39Speaker 1: on getting caught. So one night, I think it was
- 31:44Speaker 1: three days afterwards, he downed a bottle of cheap wine,
- 31:48Speaker 1: smashed the glass, and used the shards of the bottle
- 31:52Speaker 1: to cut his wrists to commit suicide.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:56Speaker 1: He slowly began to bleed out and his vision darkened.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Eventually he was unconscious, unconscious but still alive when a
- 32:05Speaker 1: hotel handyman found him lying in his room. Oh wow,
- 32:09Speaker 1: so nine when one was called and he was rushed
- 32:12Speaker 1: to the hospital where they managed to save his life. Okay,
- 32:16Speaker 1: but it was there that doctor Leroy Smith would recognize
- 32:20Speaker 1: the tattoo on his arm born to raise Hell, and
- 32:25Speaker 1: in that instant he knew this was Richard Speck, a
- 32:29Speaker 1: man who committed the crime who police were looking for.
- 32:32Speaker 2: I thought it for some reason, I just assumed the
- 32:33Speaker 2: handyman knew. I don't know why, but so was the
- 32:36Speaker 2: doctor that actually correct realized.
- 32:38Speaker 1: That they were just concerned about this individual who was
- 32:42Speaker 1: bleeding out and just rushing into the hospital. And it
- 32:44Speaker 1: came time where the doctor's the first one to really
- 32:47Speaker 1: like looking over him and they saw There's actual clip
- 32:51Speaker 1: in a documentary I watched where the doctor's talking about
- 32:53Speaker 1: wiping away the crusted blood off his arm. Oh my gosh,
- 32:57Speaker 1: to reveal the tattoo.
- 32:58Speaker 2: That's a momente.
- 33:00Speaker 1: And he said like in that moment, I knew this
- 33:02Speaker 1: was the guy. So Richard would of course be sentenced
- 33:09Speaker 1: to a lot of things, let's put it that way.
- 33:11Speaker 1: So to sum it all up, we would get into
- 33:13Speaker 1: his prison or sorry not prison sentences, court sentencing. But
- 33:17Speaker 1: before that he would be analyzed by a panel a
- 33:19Speaker 1: psychiatrists chosen both by his defense and his prosecution, and
- 33:25Speaker 1: he would thankfully be found competent to stand trial. Okay, So,
- 33:29Speaker 1: during his trial, which began on April third in nineteen
- 33:32Speaker 1: sixty seven, Richard and his defense claimed that he had
- 33:37Speaker 1: absolutely no recollection of the murders. Oh of course, he
- 33:41Speaker 1: recalled drinking up until about eight pm, when he stated
- 33:44Speaker 1: that he was given an injection of speed by some
- 33:47Speaker 1: stranger at the bar.
- 33:50Speaker 2: See, I have so much trouble of who the fuck
- 33:52Speaker 2: would even want to defend him. But I think, honestly,
- 33:56Speaker 2: even if like someone would be appointed, like, you're entitled
- 34:00Speaker 2: to have someone defend you, right, yes, So I mean
- 34:04Speaker 2: even if someone doesn't step up, like you're probably almost
- 34:07Speaker 2: maybe someone asks be forced you. But because I'm like,
- 34:09Speaker 2: how could someone literally defend him?
- 34:12Speaker 1: I believe that's exactly how it worked, and how it
- 34:14Speaker 1: worked in this case is he was appointed.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Okay, that poor soul.
- 34:18Speaker 1: He was appointed a defense and that was their defense. Now,
- 34:24Speaker 1: he never actually denied the murders, specifically or flat out.
- 34:29Speaker 1: He did apparently say and this is a quote from
- 34:31Speaker 1: someone else who was in court reminiscing of what he said.
- 34:36Speaker 1: So it's a quote through a quote. Okay, but he
- 34:38Speaker 1: did say, if I am accused of it, I don't
- 34:41Speaker 1: remember it. So that's kind of the attitude he approached
- 34:44Speaker 1: it with in court.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Well what else does he have?
- 34:47Speaker 1: Yeah, So Correzone would stand trial against Richard.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Okay, is this the moment we're getting there?
- 34:56Speaker 1: The moment? Yeah? Now, she painted the picture of the
- 34:58Speaker 1: horrific night that she and her roommates were put through
- 35:01Speaker 1: and how she was lucky enough to be forgotten about.
- 35:05Speaker 1: She would quite literally point out to the jury the
- 35:09Speaker 1: man responsible for it, and she would do so by
- 35:11Speaker 1: standing directly in front of him and pointing her finger
- 35:15Speaker 1: inches away from him, right in his face, saying, this
- 35:18Speaker 1: is the man, fucking bad ass of the day.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Okay. So many moments here that just give me like
- 35:25Speaker 2: a shiver.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Like wow, Like she stood inches away from this fucking
- 35:29Speaker 1: assholeah and said, this is the guy with her finger
- 35:32Speaker 1: in his face.
- 35:32Speaker 2: That's impressive. That is amazing. Well, yes, good for her,
- 35:37Speaker 2: like right on, so.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Like she's got balls bigger than me one hundred and
- 35:42Speaker 1: ten percent, like wow.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Well, I mean she's had some time to ste on.
- 35:47Speaker 2: What a complete freakin' asshole. This is more so than that,
- 35:51Speaker 2: Like I don't even want to say what he is.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, but I mean and fair enough, like someone
- 35:55Speaker 1: who's going to go through something like that, that trauma
- 35:58Speaker 1: is going to carry way through the rest of your life.
- 36:00Speaker 2: You think it could go on the other way where
- 36:02Speaker 2: she was just completely terrified and didn't even want to
- 36:05Speaker 2: go into the courtroom.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean respectively, So if that is the case.
- 36:09Speaker 1: But less than a year later, she stands inches from
- 36:13Speaker 1: this man and tells the entire courtroom and she points
- 36:17Speaker 1: to him, this.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Is the man right on. I love that? So good
- 36:21Speaker 2: for her?
- 36:21Speaker 1: Fuck yes, yeah. So along with her testimony, which in
- 36:27Speaker 1: all honesty, the whole trial primarily was her testimony. That's
- 36:31Speaker 1: pretty much how this all wrapped up was because of her.
- 36:35Speaker 1: But along with her testimony and the various fingerprints at
- 36:37Speaker 1: the scene that matched his. After only forty five minutes
- 36:41Speaker 1: of deliberation, the jury came back with a guilty verdict
- 36:45Speaker 1: and Richard was given the death penalty. Okay, however, there's
- 36:51Speaker 1: always a however.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Oh here, I'm just like, okay, yeah, this is good,
- 36:55Speaker 2: this is a good well, and this is a shit ending,
- 36:57Speaker 2: but like the best possible ending of a shitty scenario.
- 37:00Speaker 1: But what well you're not going to like the ending?
- 37:03Speaker 1: Is that?
- 37:04Speaker 2: Not?
- 37:04Speaker 1: For this part? I'm going to tell you about this
- 37:06Speaker 1: real quick. However, it would later be changed to a
- 37:09Speaker 1: life sentence. Oh, nineteen seventy one. This is a fair
- 37:13Speaker 1: I get this, This is fair. It was changed in
- 37:16Speaker 1: nineteen seventy one when the Supreme Court ruled that people
- 37:19Speaker 1: opposed to the death penalty were unconstitutionally excluded from his
- 37:24Speaker 1: jury during the trial. So he did not have a
- 37:28Speaker 1: fair trial or fair jury in the trial as far
- 37:33Speaker 1: as considering death penalty.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Okay, say that again, sorry, say that one part again.
- 37:37Speaker 1: The jury was predominantly people who believed in the death penalty.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Oh okay, So it was like he's going to be guilty,
- 37:44Speaker 2: and like, no matter what he's going to be.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Sentenced to that, Yes, so it was not a fair
- 37:49Speaker 1: distribution of death penalty or not, right, so they took
- 37:52Speaker 1: it away because of that reason. So he's still serving life.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, so still like a good sentence.
- 37:58Speaker 1: I understand that call. So anyway, I mean I may
- 38:03Speaker 1: not agree with the sentence or whatever, but the call makes.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Sense, and they're not wasting money and resources and all
- 38:08Speaker 2: that to have like another trial.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Yes, they just went, okay, you know what, he could
- 38:12Speaker 1: have also gotten life instead of death, so let's just
- 38:16Speaker 1: give him life.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:18Speaker 1: So he served out a sentence in Stateville Correctional Center
- 38:22Speaker 1: in Illinois. Now, a sentence that in itself was almost
- 38:25Speaker 1: as odd as his life growing up. This is where
- 38:29Speaker 1: things take a really weird turn and where it's almost
- 38:32Speaker 1: like it's not a happy ending. Now. He was frequently
- 38:37Speaker 1: found in his cell in prison with drugs or contraband
- 38:40Speaker 1: like moonshine, all within his possession. Often he was given
- 38:45Speaker 1: the nickname Birdman, apparently because he had managed to capture
- 38:49Speaker 1: a few sparrows that would fly into his room. So
- 38:51Speaker 1: we had these pet birds, So he got the nickname Birdman.
- 38:55Speaker 1: But he kept everything in his cell very meticulous, odd individual. Now,
- 39:01Speaker 1: amongst the drugs that were smuggled in for Richard were
- 39:04Speaker 1: some sort of unknown hormone therapy drugs. He began to
- 39:09Speaker 1: grow breasts while in prison, something he did it speculated
- 39:14Speaker 1: specifically to use to his advantage in prison and ensure
- 39:18Speaker 1: his survival in the rough atmosphere.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 39:22Speaker 1: In nineteen ninety six, a very bizarre video was leaked
- 39:26Speaker 1: from his prison cell. Now, this video was taken in
- 39:30Speaker 1: nineteen ninety eight, and it was released to the public
- 39:32Speaker 1: by an anonymous attorney. The video shows Richard wearing silk
- 39:38Speaker 1: panties and being topless with his very feminine like breasts.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I'm sorry, but I'm just like, what's going
- 39:46Speaker 2: on right now? Like this is about the least thing
- 39:49Speaker 2: I ever expected.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, in this video that I've only seen PG
- 39:55Speaker 1: rated clips of Richard is performing oral sex on another
- 39:59Speaker 1: in while they do large amounts of cocaine. Now, quote
- 40:03Speaker 1: from Richard from the video has him saying, quote, if
- 40:06Speaker 1: they only knew how much fun I was having, they'd
- 40:09Speaker 1: turned me loose.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Okay, I don't even know what to say. I am
- 40:15Speaker 2: just like, yeah, in shock right now? So was I okay?
- 40:19Speaker 2: Like what just happened?
- 40:21Speaker 1: Well, so many people wanted him to rot, to suffer,
- 40:24Speaker 1: to justice. This isn't justice.
- 40:27Speaker 2: And here he's just saying that he's living like his
- 40:29Speaker 2: best life in there and having fun. Yeah, what on
- 40:33Speaker 2: earth is happening? Okay? And sorry? What prison was he in?
- 40:38Speaker 1: Oh? You're make me scroll back here?
- 40:40Speaker 2: Oh you don't have to. I just feel like when
- 40:41Speaker 2: I was at Alcatrals there was a birdman.
- 40:44Speaker 1: No, it's not that one stateful correctional center in Illinois.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Okay, I look that up now.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Though, as I've stated, I have not watched this whole video.
- 40:56Speaker 1: I've only seen the PG rated stuff or some highlights
- 40:59Speaker 1: of the PG rated stuff. There are conversations of individuals
- 41:04Speaker 1: asking him if he likes intercourse with men, does he
- 41:08Speaker 1: like receiving it from men in prison? And he's like,
- 41:11Speaker 1: of course I do. And these men are asking him
- 41:13Speaker 1: about his underwear and stuff and like are you wearing
- 41:15Speaker 1: the silk one stain? He's like yeah, like let's see
- 41:16Speaker 1: take it off, and he's just like on a whim,
- 41:19Speaker 1: He's just doing it. He's just like happy to He's basically,
- 41:21Speaker 1: for a lack of better term, he's a sex slave
- 41:24Speaker 1: in prison.
- 41:26Speaker 2: But this is almost like it was his survival mechanism. Yes,
- 41:30Speaker 2: very much, so just faking that.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Well, that's what a lot of people are saying. Is Okay,
- 41:35Speaker 1: maybe he is getting a fate worse than his death
- 41:39Speaker 1: because he is turned into something where he is he
- 41:41Speaker 1: could be getting he was.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Doing this to other people in a sense.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Yeah, he could be now a sex slave in prison,
- 41:49Speaker 1: and he could be doing this as some sort of
- 41:51Speaker 1: coping mechanism for what he did to other people.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Yeah, because he probably went in there thinking that he
- 41:56Speaker 2: would get murdered then because of what he's done.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Yeah, so now he's almost become his own victim in
- 42:03Speaker 1: a sense, or he's.
- 42:04Speaker 2: So messed in the in the head that he has
- 42:09Speaker 2: convinced himself that he likes this and he actually does.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe he does like this, and wow, he is
- 42:15Speaker 1: literally enjoying prison. Who knows?
- 42:18Speaker 2: I literally like, is this is this a movie like this?
- 42:21Speaker 1: It's bizarre because.
- 42:23Speaker 2: This made out to me it's not. I know, I'm
- 42:26Speaker 2: not questioning you at all, but I'm just like this, Okay,
- 42:30Speaker 2: my mind's blown. Now.
- 42:31Speaker 1: At one point in the video, another voice, well a
- 42:35Speaker 1: voice from behind the camera, asked Richard another question he
- 42:38Speaker 1: asked why he killed the women. Okay, Now, he responded
- 42:42Speaker 1: by saying it just wasn't their night and kind of
- 42:46Speaker 1: laughing it off.
- 42:47Speaker 2: Wow, asshole.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Now in this video there's a few other references to
- 42:52Speaker 1: the murders. This is the only time on record Richard
- 42:57Speaker 1: ever admitted to killing the women.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Oh okay, so that was actually okay, Like he's admitting there.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Yeah, like in the whole trial and everything, he's like,
- 43:08Speaker 1: I don't remember it.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Yeah. That was his defense, basically that he had no
- 43:12Speaker 2: recollection of it. Yeah.
- 43:13Speaker 1: So in this video, which as far as I can tell,
- 43:17Speaker 1: he was not being aware. He was not aware of
- 43:18Speaker 1: that other was being filmed.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Oh who was filming this?
- 43:22Speaker 1: I don't know. Like I said, it was an anonymous
- 43:26Speaker 1: video that surfaced in nineteen ninety six when it was
- 43:28Speaker 1: originally recorded in nineteen eighty eight. So yeah. Richard Speck
- 43:34Speaker 1: would eventually die on December fifth, nineteen ninety one, the
- 43:39Speaker 1: eve of his fifteenth fiftieth birthday. So he died when
- 43:42Speaker 1: he was forty.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Nine years old, pretty young.
- 43:44Speaker 1: He died from a sudden heart attack, just like his father.
- 43:48Speaker 1: He spent twenty five years behind bars, and upon his creation,
- 43:53Speaker 1: his family didn't want his body or anything to do
- 43:56Speaker 1: with them.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Wow.
- 43:58Speaker 1: And to this day, apparently there are only two individuals
- 44:01Speaker 1: who know what happened to his remains because they are
- 44:04Speaker 1: the individuals who had to deal with his remains. No
- 44:06Speaker 1: one cares to.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Know that, right there is Oh, what's the word? I
- 44:11Speaker 2: can't even think of the word. But that's the ultimate punishment. Really,
- 44:15Speaker 2: you literally have no one who gives a shit that
- 44:19Speaker 2: you are no longer in the world. Like that's wow,
- 44:23Speaker 2: Like you really fucked up.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Yeah, he is like Douche Canoe beyond belief. Yeah, Like
- 44:28Speaker 1: fuck this guy and the whole like prison thing is
- 44:32Speaker 1: like if they knew how much fun I was having,
- 44:33Speaker 1: did turn me loose? Like what the fuck?
- 44:36Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 44:37Speaker 1: When I when I watched that clip of him saying that, I.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Feel like I need to google something. I need to
- 44:44Speaker 2: see that.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sure you don't want to see the whole video,
- 44:47Speaker 1: Like I said, no, I'd like the PG Yeah, well
- 44:51Speaker 1: I can. I can link the documentary that one of
- 44:54Speaker 1: the documentaries I used for a resource in the bottom
- 44:56Speaker 1: show notes of this, so you can go click on it.
- 44:58Speaker 1: It's on YouTube and it's some highlights of that video
- 45:01Speaker 1: in there as well. So you guys can go check
- 45:03Speaker 1: it out too.
- 45:04Speaker 2: This whole thing though like bizarre, Like the whole story
- 45:07Speaker 2: is just bizarre. And then to end it in that way.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, the whole psychological factor in this is jaw
- 45:16Speaker 1: dropping beyond belief.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Like I've never heard of anything like that.
- 45:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's again bizarre.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Because generally you're like, okay, this person, like, yeah, he's guilty,
- 45:27Speaker 2: he's going to serve life in prison. Maybe there's some
- 45:29Speaker 2: like he gets attacked in prison or like or something
- 45:33Speaker 2: or dies or something, but not like that. He literally
- 45:38Speaker 2: takes pills to give himself breasts and wears underwear and
- 45:42Speaker 2: is like a sex slave to inmates.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and like, as far as I can tell, there
- 45:48Speaker 1: is no there's no documentation or any statement of him
- 45:53Speaker 1: wanting to become transgendered or become a woman or anything
- 45:56Speaker 1: like that. He just did this strictly as a defense
- 45:59Speaker 1: mechanism to keep going, which kind of falls back to
- 46:05Speaker 1: again the first episode on this, people talked if he
- 46:07Speaker 1: didn't have a weapon in his hand, he was just spineless,
- 46:12Speaker 1: And I think that's what it was. He didn't have
- 46:14Speaker 1: a weapon in his hand, so he needed some way
- 46:16Speaker 1: to have the power over individuals, which is exactly what
- 46:20Speaker 1: we talked about. Wow, first episode, he needed power somehow,
- 46:24Speaker 1: this was his way.
- 46:25Speaker 2: So he was basically using sex as his power in prison. Yep, well,
- 46:31Speaker 2: my head is spinning this Okay. I was not expecting
- 46:36Speaker 2: any Well I knew a little bit, but not that part.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Holy heck, can't believe you kept that from me.
- 46:42Speaker 1: If there's one episode or one case you guys listened
- 46:46Speaker 1: to from our show multiple times to try and understand things,
- 46:51Speaker 1: or maybe even if you don't listen to us, but
- 46:53Speaker 1: you dive deeper in a case, this should be it,
- 46:57Speaker 1: because holy fuck, Like I said, the psychological stuff behind
- 47:01Speaker 1: it is it's heavy. It's it's so deep.
- 47:06Speaker 2: And is this a movie?
- 47:08Speaker 1: I don't, not that I'm aware of documentaries.
- 47:10Speaker 2: Yeah, but okay, but the story kind of is. So
- 47:14Speaker 2: I'm sorry I keep saying this bizarre, but it almost
- 47:16Speaker 2: just seems like it needs to be made into a movie.
- 47:18Speaker 1: It's it seems like a movie plot.
- 47:20Speaker 2: It does because like at one point I was like,
- 47:22Speaker 2: is this literally real?
- 47:24Speaker 1: Yeah? It is?
- 47:25Speaker 2: Oh, that would have been interesting to research prior to researching.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Did you know about that end part? No?
- 47:32Speaker 1: No? I did not.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Okay, Wow, that's probably the biggest shock of researching a
- 47:37Speaker 2: case ever.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Well, prior to researching this, I knew of this. I've
- 47:42Speaker 1: heard the name, and then I knew it was he
- 47:45Speaker 1: killed some women. That's all I kind of knew. And
- 47:48Speaker 1: then when I started scrolling, you know, looking for cases,
- 47:51Speaker 1: you know, through a book or online or whatever, I
- 47:53Speaker 1: came across his name again, and it came across like
- 47:56Speaker 1: a quick little like meme article sort of thing, little
- 47:59Speaker 1: elevator pitch on how he's a mass murderer and killed
- 48:03Speaker 1: eight women in a dorm room essentially, and there was
- 48:06Speaker 1: a survivor, and I was like, you know what, we
- 48:09Speaker 1: haven't done a survivor for a while. I want to
- 48:10Speaker 1: cover her survivor. So that's kind of the case that
- 48:13Speaker 1: stood up, like let's do it. And then upon researching
- 48:16Speaker 1: it was just like holy fuck, everything just started unfolding
- 48:20Speaker 1: and I'm like, what the fuck?
- 48:22Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean survivor or not. Like, it's amazing.
- 48:27Speaker 2: I'm so thankful that someone survived. Gosh, it had been
- 48:30Speaker 2: amazing if more people survived, but they would have probably
- 48:34Speaker 2: found him anyway. Yeah, I'm assuming right. She just really
- 48:37Speaker 2: sped up and helped the process.
- 48:39Speaker 1: She did. I think alone the fingerprints would have pulled
- 48:42Speaker 1: up a match.
- 48:43Speaker 2: Eventually because his criminal record was so vast prior to right.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but she was able to give a description that
- 48:48Speaker 1: fit that kind of narrow down their search.
- 48:50Speaker 2: For the yeah prints. So she was very helpful.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Yep.
- 48:54Speaker 2: But wow, okay, wow.
- 48:56Speaker 1: So yeah, that's the episode. Hopefully it was worth being
- 48:59Speaker 1: a two harder. Like I say, if there's one case
- 49:02Speaker 1: that you guys dive deeper into or listen to double on,
- 49:05Speaker 1: this should be it. Because I'm just gonna leave with that.
- 49:09Speaker 1: It was insane. Thank you for sitting here with us.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Thank you for being here with us. If you want

- 49:20Speaker 1: Yeah, we have merch. So all those links are in

- 49:31Speaker 1: We appreciate your support regardless of what you do.
- 49:34Speaker 2: I just have to say too, I think most people
- 49:36Speaker 2: make it to the end, but this is one you
- 49:38Speaker 2: got to put on the Instagram post because maybe they
- 49:40Speaker 2: are like, oh he's guilty, they just stop listening. You
- 49:42Speaker 2: got to listen to the end on this one. Yeah
- 49:45Speaker 2: that's insane. Oh yeah, but anyway, well done and until
- 49:49Speaker 2: next time, Not cool, Carl, stay wicked.
