- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Hey, folks, this is Sam Kinnison and you're listening to
- 0:05Speaker 2: tech talk radio right here. You understand that, you cake,
- 0:09Speaker 2: oh oh.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 0:17Speaker 1: I'm Sean de Weird. Thank you for being here, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: I know Sean has had a very very exciting couple
- 0:24Speaker 1: of weeks. First off, you'll be able to watch the
- 0:27Speaker 1: video of him walking around the show floor of the
- 0:30Speaker 1: National Association of Broadcasters the Big NAB Show. This is
- 0:34Speaker 1: your first show that you went to, right, So it's the.
- 0:37Speaker 2: First time I've went to this specific trade show for broadcast. Yeah.
- 0:41Speaker 2: So it's an annual show they do in Vegas. It's
- 0:44Speaker 2: the largest broadcasting trade show in the world.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I did a live chot with Andy while we were there,
- 0:50Speaker 2: and also walking on just one of the buildings of
- 0:52Speaker 2: the trade floor.
- 0:53Speaker 1: So yeah, they had stuff everywhere and it was funny
- 0:56Speaker 1: because of course broadcasting covers television, it covers radio, covers
- 1:01Speaker 1: at radio. Now it's covering the Internet as well.
- 1:04Speaker 2: So it's interesting to see because I've been in the
- 1:07Speaker 2: broadcasting eighty obviously you've been in the broadcast industry for
- 1:10Speaker 2: radio since the early eighties. I've been in broadcast television
- 1:16Speaker 2: since the late two thousand and you know, two thousand
- 1:18Speaker 2: and nine, the late twenty tens, and even from that
- 1:22Speaker 2: time frame to now, it's changed. And what's interesting is
- 1:27Speaker 2: it's kind of a weird blending of prosumer and professional
- 1:31Speaker 2: equipment because you have a lot of content creators that
- 1:36Speaker 2: are doing large studio productions now YouTube studios. I mentioned
- 1:41Speaker 2: it to you in our call, is that I got
- 1:43Speaker 2: to network with so many great people. I got to
- 1:45Speaker 2: meet a lot of the people that my boss has
- 1:47Speaker 2: known for decades across the industry. And what was cool
- 1:52Speaker 2: was we were meeting with one specific vendor when another
- 1:55Speaker 2: guy came up and was talking to our vendor real
- 2:01Speaker 2: quickly because he knew them. He went they went to
- 2:03Speaker 2: college together, right, But it was the lead I don't
- 2:06Speaker 2: remember what his title was, but like the lead content
- 2:08Speaker 2: developer for dude Perfect.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Oh wow, well that's pretty cool.
- 2:13Speaker 2: So I mean, if you're listening to this and you
- 2:15Speaker 2: don't know who dude Perfect is, Dude Perfect is probably
- 2:17Speaker 2: one of the largest YouTube channels that exists based off
- 2:20Speaker 2: of you know, the Internet, Like they one of the
- 2:24Speaker 2: largest YouTube channels that exist. So they were there because
- 2:28Speaker 2: they're looking for new equipment for a new facility they're
- 2:32Speaker 2: building for their studio. They're building another large studio on
- 2:36Speaker 2: their property for Dude Perfect.
- 2:38Speaker 1: You know, for people there, Yeah, it had to be
- 2:41Speaker 1: kind of eye opening for you. For people who say,
- 2:44Speaker 1: you know, well there's no money in broadcasting on YouTube,
- 2:47Speaker 1: there's no money in you know, creating content. You find
- 2:50Speaker 1: that to be a I mean, they're going to build
- 2:52Speaker 1: a studio and they're so they.
- 2:55Speaker 2: The dude you have to put the super protective, right.
- 2:57Speaker 2: The Dude Perfect just started off as like it's like
- 2:59Speaker 2: three guys, right, three guys doing YouTube show. It blew up.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Then they had enough money to build a forty thousand
- 3:06Speaker 2: square foot studio. Now they're adding on an additional forty
- 3:10Speaker 2: thousand foot building, forty thousand square foot building that has
- 3:14Speaker 2: sound stages and other sets, and they're developing them and
- 3:18Speaker 2: expanding their brand. So they're they're looking at vendors for
- 3:22Speaker 2: what who can provide the equipment? And I mean it's
- 3:25Speaker 2: it's from everything. It's from it's from planning and execution
- 3:30Speaker 2: software for pre production, it's equipment, it's integrators, it's the
- 3:38Speaker 2: actual content you're creating. It's editing, it's post production, it's lighting,
- 3:44Speaker 2: it's sound, it's design, it's literally everything you need to
- 3:48Speaker 2: have your entire production taken care of. You could get
- 3:50Speaker 2: at anyb and it's meeting with industry reps, it's meeting
- 3:54Speaker 2: with vendors, it's meeting with your sales you know, the
- 3:57Speaker 2: people that take care of you on the sales teams
- 3:59Speaker 2: and stuff. I met more people that I've talked to
- 4:03Speaker 2: on the phone or via email for the first time,
- 4:05Speaker 2: which is great. And I met new people well it
- 4:08Speaker 2: I hadn't met.
- 4:09Speaker 1: It had to be kind of cool, Sean, because you
- 4:12Speaker 1: do use a lot of gear obviously for the games
- 4:16Speaker 1: that they do at Notre Dame, where you know you're
- 4:18Speaker 1: working and stuff, so this might be for you the
- 4:21Speaker 1: first time actually reaching and meeting somebody that makes a
- 4:25Speaker 1: tripod or makes amount or makes the camera or makes
- 4:28Speaker 1: you know, something that you use in the production booth.
- 4:31Speaker 1: That had to be kind of a cool experience.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah. I got to talk to the people that make
- 4:36Speaker 2: the products too, right. I got to talk to the
- 4:39Speaker 2: product developers for our intercom system for you know, the
- 4:44Speaker 2: guy that works on the lenses for Cannon that like that.
- 4:47Speaker 2: It's like I got to talk to these people and
- 4:49Speaker 2: expect get to know them and you know, get to
- 4:51Speaker 2: provide feedback to them saying like, this is what we're
- 4:54Speaker 2: using it for, this is a use case that we're
- 4:56Speaker 2: using it for, this is why we like this product,
- 4:59Speaker 2: and this is the feat back that we can give
- 5:01Speaker 2: you on you know, our clients experience with your product.
- 5:04Speaker 2: And that's all just the name of the game, right,
- 5:07Speaker 2: It's just part of the business. It's part of why
- 5:09Speaker 2: NAB is so great is you get to meet with
- 5:11Speaker 2: all these great people.
- 5:12Speaker 1: When it comes to products that really stood out. Was
- 5:15Speaker 1: there something that you saw at NAB that made you say, whoa,
- 5:20Speaker 1: And maybe it's not even out yet, but it's going
- 5:22Speaker 1: to be coming out, because that's that's the neat thing
- 5:24Speaker 1: about this this show that you said, oh, this is
- 5:28Speaker 1: something we need to eventually get to help our workflow.
- 5:32Speaker 2: A lot of people went into NAB saying AI is
- 5:36Speaker 2: going to be in your face. Right, it was there,
- 5:40Speaker 2: It was prevalent. What you saw a lot in terms
- 5:44Speaker 2: of AI was AI audio mixing, AI camera tracking right,
- 5:54Speaker 2: and some AI editing tools. I mean a lot of
- 5:56Speaker 2: AI editing, a lot of AI editing tools the AI AI. Yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 2: mixing is cool because you could simulate. There's a company
- 6:06Speaker 2: called Salsa Sound, right. They make a product where you
- 6:09Speaker 2: provide it audio and you map it out on basically,
- 6:14Speaker 2: say soccer for example. That's what we're gonna demo it for.
- 6:18Speaker 2: You map it out and say, here's where this microphone
- 6:20Speaker 2: is on the pitch, Here's where this one is, here's
- 6:23Speaker 2: where that one is, Here's where my announcements are, and
- 6:26Speaker 2: you feed it. The audist is very You feed it
- 6:28Speaker 2: the specific audio for those locations, and then it auto
- 6:32Speaker 2: mixes as it follows the game. Wow, as the ball
- 6:39Speaker 2: goes to the left hand side of the field, as
- 6:41Speaker 2: the mics pick up more audio, it brings the mics
- 6:44Speaker 2: on the right side of the field down and brings
- 6:45Speaker 2: up the mics on.
- 6:46Speaker 1: The left side.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Auto mixes based on some vision AI but also mostly
- 6:51Speaker 2: just audio AI. Basically, the MIC's requieter on the north end,
- 6:56Speaker 2: so it's gonna be cloud the play is actually happening
- 6:58Speaker 2: on the south end. So but it can gate, it
- 7:02Speaker 2: can auto gate, it can limit, it can do all
- 7:04Speaker 2: this stuff automatically.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Does that worry you though? I mean we let's let's
- 7:08Speaker 1: face it, you know, we talk about how cool AI is.
- 7:11Speaker 1: We've used AI in different sources, different ways, but you
- 7:16Speaker 1: have technical directors that and I've I've worked in a
- 7:19Speaker 1: TV studio before as well. You know, they they take
- 7:22Speaker 1: take camera one, take camera two, take camera three. You know,
- 7:25Speaker 1: and your guys you're using you know, multiple cameras. Will
- 7:28Speaker 1: AI eventually be the one to choose, like, you know, hey, camera,
- 7:32Speaker 1: the ball is running down this way, we're switching to
- 7:35Speaker 1: this camera.
- 7:36Speaker 2: So you say that Ross. Ross is a company that
- 7:40Speaker 2: provides tons of broadcasts features across the age. They're one
- 7:44Speaker 2: of the largest in the in the industry. They demoed
- 7:47Speaker 2: on stage a AI listening technical director right where that
- 7:54Speaker 2: the CEO of Ross walked across the stage and was
- 7:56Speaker 2: talking about the weather. And it not only did AI
- 8:00Speaker 2: cutting in terms of cutting cameras, but it actually put
- 8:02Speaker 2: in graphics. It put in like he talked about the
- 8:05Speaker 2: weather out to find the look up the Ross twenty
- 8:08Speaker 2: twenty five and it'd be keynote, right, and I don't remember,
- 8:10Speaker 2: I don't remember what they called it, what they called
- 8:12Speaker 2: the specific product, but he was just talking about, well,
- 8:15Speaker 2: let's take a look at the seven day forecast, and
- 8:18Speaker 2: it automatically changed the graphics, showed the seven day forecast,
- 8:22Speaker 2: and he could just he could kind of just pick
- 8:24Speaker 2: and choose what he wanted to say, and it would
- 8:27Speaker 2: automatically change the scene. It would kind of it. But
- 8:31Speaker 2: it was also interpretive, so it could it could anticipate
- 8:34Speaker 2: what he was gonna talk about next, uh, and it
- 8:37Speaker 2: automatically changed the green screen graphics and automatically changed the cameras.
- 8:41Speaker 2: It was pretty wild. Yeah, I will say it was
- 8:44Speaker 2: interesting to see. They showed a live output of the
- 8:49Speaker 2: trans the transcription man didn't get.
- 8:52Speaker 1: A lot of words wrong, did it really?
- 8:54Speaker 2: Yeah, we're watching it, We're watching it side by side,
- 8:58Speaker 2: like with what's happening versus what the a eyes reading
- 9:01Speaker 2: it didn't even it didn't even get their own products right,
- 9:04Speaker 2: which was kind of funny. But I mean, for that
- 9:07Speaker 2: to be happening that fast in the cloud, and because
- 9:10Speaker 2: it was all cloud based, was pretty impressive. Because last
- 9:14Speaker 2: year they did demo a a guy sitting at his desk,
- 9:17Speaker 2: hands in the air saying all right, ready one cut one,
- 9:21Speaker 2: ready to cut two ready, you know, and it was
- 9:23Speaker 2: actually following along, So that's coming, we know that's coming.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Some more automation in terms of like the overdrive portion
- 9:31Speaker 2: where a director goes in and they don't have a
- 9:34Speaker 2: technical director. They just code the show based on camera
- 9:36Speaker 2: shots and based on queues and things like that, and
- 9:38Speaker 2: then they just hit the space bar and it moves forward.
- 9:42Speaker 2: A lot of people don't realize that a lot of
- 9:44Speaker 2: newsrooms are automated, like they don't They don't have a
- 9:47Speaker 2: technical director, they don't have an audio operator, and rarely
- 9:50Speaker 2: do they even have camera operators in the studio anymore.
- 9:52Speaker 2: They're all just they're all just locked off shots or
- 9:55Speaker 2: they have robotic heads that will turn and zoom and even.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Well you're not talking you're not talking about the talent.
- 10:02Speaker 1: You're talking about the cameras with the robotic heads, right, it's.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Not robotic, not robotic talent, even though some may be
- 10:08Speaker 2: seen robotic. Yes, but yeah, so a lot of robotic
- 10:13Speaker 2: a lot of automation AI coming for that. But a
- 10:18Speaker 2: lot of the AI focus was on eight camera tracking,
- 10:21Speaker 2: so not only broadcast cameras but just PTC pantel zoom
- 10:25Speaker 2: cameras for you know, you put a camera up at
- 10:27Speaker 2: the back of the room and it can focus on
- 10:30Speaker 2: a subject and follow them, keeping them in frame. You
- 10:33Speaker 2: can then delegate one or two targets if you want it,
- 10:36Speaker 2: so they can say, if this person is not there,
- 10:37Speaker 2: track this person. It's even getting to the point where
- 10:41Speaker 2: they can say track player numbers and keep them in
- 10:44Speaker 2: the middle of the frame. Oh, you can track. So
- 10:46Speaker 2: you know, you could have a you could have a
- 10:48Speaker 2: medium to a wide shot tracking specific players.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Yep, focus on the quarterback, focus on, yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah, focus you know, so based on facial recognition or
- 10:56Speaker 2: player identification and things like that. So seeing a lot
- 10:59Speaker 2: of that was pretty cool.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I will say this is kind of cool because when
- 11:03Speaker 1: we first started doing the TV segments on KOLD and
- 11:09Speaker 1: then KWBA, we did some stuff as well. It was
- 11:12Speaker 1: cool because you always had somebody there on a pedestal
- 11:15Speaker 1: camera that was you know, would zoom in, zoom in.
- 11:18Speaker 1: They had second camera there, and you had camera operators.
- 11:21Speaker 1: You had a floor director that would point to us
- 11:23Speaker 1: and tell us, okay, you're on, you know, and then
- 11:26Speaker 1: they would give us the symbol, the signal thirty seconds,
- 11:28Speaker 1: you know, wrap it up. I took a break for
- 11:32Speaker 1: a short period of time before we switched from KLD
- 11:36Speaker 1: to KMSB. When we came back, there were no more
- 11:39Speaker 1: camera operators, And it was the strangest thing in the
- 11:42Speaker 1: world to see these cameras that were mounted to the
- 11:46Speaker 1: ceiling on posts that are all controlled via IP and
- 11:50Speaker 1: the host can actually do something with that as well,
- 11:56Speaker 1: the graphics, the teleprompter, all of that. But there's no
- 11:59Speaker 1: floor director anymore, there's no camera operator. It's all been
- 12:02Speaker 1: brought into the booth. And then even the booth you
- 12:05Speaker 1: look at they have this great look at booth, but
- 12:08Speaker 1: there's maybe two or three operators that are in there
- 12:10Speaker 1: and that's about it. So it's changed a lot, and
- 12:14Speaker 1: I think we're gonna continues to see those changes. Some
- 12:17Speaker 1: people have said we're going to see eventually AI newscasters,
- 12:20Speaker 1: which I don't. I don't know, because I'd be honest
- 12:23Speaker 1: with you. When I see something AI, I tend to
- 12:25Speaker 1: look away. I tend to not be interested in it.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Well, right, So, I mean we've talked about that. I
- 12:30Speaker 2: say this phrase a lot. We've talked about this on
- 12:32Speaker 2: the show before. So maybe we're future predicting here the
- 12:36Speaker 2: Uncanny Valley, right, people are going to know And it's
- 12:41Speaker 2: it's all about consuming content, right, right, Like the more
- 12:45Speaker 2: content you consume, the more you get used to it,
- 12:47Speaker 2: but I don't think. I don't think people are gonna
- 12:50Speaker 2: be people are gonna understand when it's AI. People are
- 12:53Speaker 2: gonna hear AI. People are gonna see it, and it's
- 12:55Speaker 2: gonna be off putting. I don't think we're gonna get there,
- 12:58Speaker 2: especially in the lark. Maybe in the smaller markets where
- 13:00Speaker 2: there's not money to be made, but the larger markets
- 13:03Speaker 2: like kswb's Fox five San Diego, New York, LA, like
- 13:07Speaker 2: those places, they're so rooted in community. In those places,
- 13:12Speaker 2: I doubt we'll see AI.
- 13:14Speaker 1: But in the smaller market stations that could be a possibility,
- 13:18Speaker 1: especially if mom and pops. You wonder if mom and
- 13:20Speaker 1: pop stations would be adaptive to it. I don't know,
- 13:24Speaker 1: you know, I think it depends on the broadcaster. Like
- 13:27Speaker 1: this is a small station that we're on here. The
- 13:31Speaker 1: owners are very committed to being community oriented, very very
- 13:34Speaker 1: about being local. They do a lot of talk segments
- 13:37Speaker 1: that are featured on that and I don't think you
- 13:40Speaker 1: can get that with AI delivery. Radio is going to
- 13:43Speaker 1: be facing changes, and I think the changes will come
- 13:46Speaker 1: faster to radio than they will with TV because TV
- 13:48Speaker 1: has two things to consider. It has audio and video,
- 13:51Speaker 1: where radio is just basically basically just the audio portion
- 13:55Speaker 1: of it. Now when it comes to ATSC three point Oh,
- 14:01Speaker 1: that's been a big thing. Was that covered at this
- 14:03Speaker 1: year's NAV?
- 14:04Speaker 2: Oh? Sure, yeah it was. I mean, but to what extent?
- 14:08Speaker 2: I mean the future of television? Right, it's it is
- 14:12Speaker 2: what it is, but it's who's adopting it. Everybody's moving
- 14:16Speaker 2: to it, But what what stations? What station group in
- 14:21Speaker 2: the US is doing four K? Nobody? Yeah, I mean
- 14:25Speaker 2: they It was interesting because we talked a little bit
- 14:27Speaker 2: about this because really the only reason to go four
- 14:31Speaker 2: K is just to say you can, yeah, and NHK
- 14:35Speaker 2: in Japan is eight K because they can and they're national.
- 14:41Speaker 1: AK over the air. Yeah.
- 14:43Speaker 2: HK in Japan is a K over the air and
- 14:45Speaker 2: they're the only reason is because they can, yeah, and
- 14:49Speaker 2: they can say we're the first country to do it.
- 14:50Speaker 2: They're proud of that. But there's no who's watching it
- 14:54Speaker 2: any k? I mean, I don't know it's Japan, who
- 14:56Speaker 2: could be, could be everybody, But there's no reason to
- 15:00Speaker 2: four K over the air. Yet We're never probably gonna
- 15:03Speaker 2: go more higher than ten ADPHDR right for because there's
- 15:07Speaker 2: no benefit beyond that for US but I mean some
- 15:12Speaker 2: replay stuff maybe four k down the road. But that's UHD.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I mean you're you're running into a whole different level
- 15:18Speaker 2: of how do you monitor that? How do you get
- 15:21Speaker 2: it from point A to point B easily? It's there's
- 15:25Speaker 2: a lot that goes into jumping from HD to ultra HD.
- 15:29Speaker 1: All right, So who had the biggest booth at this
- 15:32Speaker 1: year's twenty twenty five National Association or Broadcasters Show?
- 15:35Speaker 2: Probably Sony.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Sony really for well everything right, cameras.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Software, everything cameras from their still camera line all the
- 15:45Speaker 2: way through their broadcast line, their switchers, their production of
- 15:48Speaker 2: their broadcast line. It was wild how much there's booth
- 15:51Speaker 2: took up. Well, I walked through it with you. You'll
- 15:53Speaker 2: see it.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Yep. Now what about Dji. Dji has been one of
- 15:58Speaker 1: those companies that is is huge. DJ guys enormous. Were
- 16:03Speaker 1: they there because of you know, some of the stuff
- 16:05Speaker 1: they're going through now.
- 16:07Speaker 2: So they were definitely were there. They actually had a
- 16:09Speaker 2: larger booth than I thought they were going to. They
- 16:12Speaker 2: so they released their Ronan R five. I think it's
- 16:15Speaker 2: the Ronan R five. Uh it's basically a really really
- 16:21Speaker 2: high quality camera built onto a gimbal. It's literally a
- 16:25Speaker 2: all in one camera gimble that you came out cinema
- 16:28Speaker 2: lenses to. Oh wow, and it's battery power. It's great,
- 16:31Speaker 2: it's incredible looking, and it's been used on a bunch
- 16:33Speaker 2: of feature films recently. So they were deubling that they
- 16:36Speaker 2: had their awesome line there, they had their action cam
- 16:40Speaker 2: line there, and they actually had their power banks there,
- 16:44Speaker 2: which well, we'll talk a little bit more about that,
- 16:46Speaker 2: but it was interesting how there's a lot of there
- 16:50Speaker 2: were there were a lot of vendors that I saw
- 16:54Speaker 2: that either had their own version of power banks or
- 16:57Speaker 2: were powering their equipment with other power banks. Like here,
- 17:02Speaker 2: look at our remote kit, Look at our remote setup.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Here we're powering our whole booth off of lithium ion batteries.
- 17:09Speaker 2: So everybody has their own. The technology has gotten so
- 17:12Speaker 2: much cheaper. Well maybe not now with whatever's coming with
- 17:16Speaker 2: tariffs and stuff, but it's approachable. It's you can get
- 17:21Speaker 2: this for relatively inexpensive that will power all of your lights,
- 17:24Speaker 2: it'll power your laptop, it'll power your camera, it'll power remotely.
- 17:28Speaker 2: You don't have to have a generator that makes noise. Right,
- 17:31Speaker 2: It's it's it's a it's a fanless unit. It makes
- 17:36Speaker 2: enough power for what we need, for what they need.
- 17:39Speaker 2: So d G I and I just heard people over
- 17:42Speaker 2: overheard people saying I didn't know DJ I made these.
- 17:44Speaker 2: I really know, well who knew. I mean, it's not
- 17:48Speaker 2: something they it just kind of shadowed, dropped in the
- 17:51Speaker 2: middle of the night one night. And you know, I
- 17:54Speaker 2: bought one. I bought the thousand whatever, the DJ Power
- 17:57Speaker 2: one thousand. And it's been great. And at once we're
- 18:01Speaker 2: not talking about ANAB and we come back from break,
- 18:02Speaker 2: we'll talk a little bit more about specifically me using And.
- 18:05Speaker 1: This is a good and I'll tell you we talked
- 18:08Speaker 1: about it before the show. It's a good reason for
- 18:10Speaker 1: people to get one. I have a power I have
- 18:13Speaker 1: a power bank. It's not that one. It's the one
- 18:15Speaker 1: from I think it's Anchor, and I mean, I like it.
- 18:19Speaker 1: It's okay, it's good. I kind of wish when I
- 18:22Speaker 1: did the broadcast from a town of Sebdita, Sita, I
- 18:25Speaker 1: wish it would have taken it with me because they
- 18:27Speaker 1: brought me a gas powered generator and I thought, I
- 18:31Speaker 1: wonder if the generator I had, the electric one would
- 18:35Speaker 1: have been better. But I have a solar power connector.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I could have just put up the solar panels. I
- 18:41Speaker 1: probably would have been okay, probably would instead of using
- 18:44Speaker 1: the gas powered one.
- 18:46Speaker 2: So but I would. I would say that you're gonna
- 18:49Speaker 2: see a lot more vendor specific battery packs, Tji, Small Rig,
- 18:57Speaker 2: A handful of other companies I saw that were there
- 19:00Speaker 2: a lot of them. Some of them were doing some big,
- 19:02Speaker 2: big ones too big big, yeah, honkin, I mean on
- 19:06Speaker 2: big wheels that are really heavy that you probably can't
- 19:08Speaker 2: take on airplanes.
- 19:09Speaker 1: All right, So I'm wondering. I'm wondering. Now we TAWD
- 19:12Speaker 1: you mentioned the word tariff. Of course, there's been a
- 19:14Speaker 1: lot of concern how that's going to affect the technology industry.
- 19:17Speaker 1: There was a word that we're not going to see
- 19:19Speaker 1: the tarffs on that, and then the next day we
- 19:22Speaker 1: were told no, no, no, somebody misspoke. We are going
- 19:25Speaker 1: to see terraffs on some of the technology that's coming
- 19:28Speaker 1: out of China and whatnot. But I'm wondering, did you
- 19:31Speaker 1: see any US manufacturers of drone products there at an
- 19:36Speaker 1: A B Because.
- 19:38Speaker 2: I mean, the only only drone stuff that I saw,
- 19:41Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not saying this because I didn't look right, Yeah,
- 19:46Speaker 2: DJ I didn't didn't even have I don't think I
- 19:49Speaker 2: saw any of their drone stuff out on the floor.
- 19:51Speaker 2: There was hardly any drone stuff at all, right, at
- 19:55Speaker 2: any b I mean, I know that four or five
- 19:57Speaker 2: years ago, it was the only thing people could talk
- 19:59Speaker 2: about was drugs, drugs, drums. How easy it is. But
- 20:02Speaker 2: people have moved on from the drones are cool. But yeah,
- 20:05Speaker 2: they're they're key peach piece. But I didn't see many
- 20:08Speaker 2: other There was some literature about them, but I didn't
- 20:11Speaker 2: see any big booze that had this is all we
- 20:13Speaker 2: do is drones, right, you know, that kind of thing.
- 20:16Speaker 2: But the companies that we talked to, some of them
- 20:20Speaker 2: did mention, well, we're going to have to you know,
- 20:23Speaker 2: we're probably gonna have to boost our prices by twenty
- 20:25Speaker 2: percent for tariffs, or yeah, you know, or hey, we
- 20:28Speaker 2: spun up you know, our research and development center in
- 20:31Speaker 2: the US is now are where we're putting our pieces together.
- 20:34Speaker 2: So we it's now assembled in the US. You don't
- 20:37Speaker 2: have to pay tariffs. And so that was a common
- 20:41Speaker 2: topic among our vendors because you know, we have a
- 20:44Speaker 2: lot of Canadian vendors that work in the brocket industry.
- 20:47Speaker 2: So it's interesting to see where that's going to go.
- 20:50Speaker 2: And that could check up our price on equipment by
- 20:54Speaker 2: twenty percent potentially for certain things.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Now you talked about that one gentleman you had met
- 20:58Speaker 1: with the YouTube channel. Did you find there were a
- 21:01Speaker 1: lot of influencers or internet companies that were there that
- 21:05Speaker 1: want to create content for the web and they would
- 21:09Speaker 1: be using this kind of stuff. I mean one of
- 21:11Speaker 1: the in the video that you can actually see in
- 21:13Speaker 1: this this video, Uh, there was even a car with
- 21:17Speaker 1: all the camera mounts and like you would see them
- 21:19Speaker 1: making a big screen movie. They could do this stuff.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Now you know creators can can do this kind of stuff.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean it's not just television anymore. It's
- 21:30Speaker 2: not just broadcast. It's television, it's radio, it's broadcast, it's Internet,
- 21:34Speaker 2: it's cinema, it's everything that in terms of production, like
- 21:39Speaker 2: the production value for the Internet is there. And you know,
- 21:43Speaker 2: you had all the major parties involved in all Netflix,
- 21:47Speaker 2: they were all there. They all had even Netflix really yeah,
- 21:51Speaker 2: so they all had a presence. So well, I mean
- 21:52Speaker 2: Netflix is a major broadcasting platform. Now live sports have
- 21:56Speaker 2: been on Netflix. The other big thing that was at
- 21:58Speaker 2: ANB this year was cloud product, Like what everybody has
- 22:02Speaker 2: a cloud solution, and it makes sense that these companies
- 22:08Speaker 2: are building cloud platforms because if you have a cloud
- 22:12Speaker 2: platform or a cloud product, this is my opinion on this,
- 22:16Speaker 2: it's easier for you to get into their ecosystem. So
- 22:23Speaker 2: let's say, like for for us at Notre Dame, we
- 22:25Speaker 2: use Ross expression for our graphics. For our graphics packages
- 22:28Speaker 2: are Spore, bugst cetera. They offer a expression in the
- 22:32Speaker 2: cloud package, meaning I can just pay Ross x amount
- 22:37Speaker 2: of dollars for a license and then pay Amazon the
- 22:42Speaker 2: price of the time that I'm using their instance online. Right,
- 22:46Speaker 2: so they're whatever their s three bucket or whatever they're
- 22:49Speaker 2: you know, e, two instant, whatever whatever the instance is called.
- 22:51Speaker 1: And you say Amazon for our listens, don't know AWS,
- 22:54Speaker 1: that's AWS.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Whoever your cloud provider is. It could be a Zoo,
- 22:58Speaker 2: a zoo, it could be a ask a good work.
- 23:02Speaker 2: It's going to be easier for people to do smaller
- 23:05Speaker 2: level productions at a scalable cost, meaning I could get
- 23:11Speaker 2: expression level graphics on my show if I only need
- 23:14Speaker 2: one graphic or two fonts or something, and I'm always
- 23:17Speaker 2: spending you know, one thousand dollars or fifteen hundred dollars
- 23:21Speaker 2: or whatever it's going to be, instead of getting a
- 23:24Speaker 2: fifteen thousand dollars server and having a ten thousand dollars
- 23:27Speaker 2: license attached to it perpetually. Yeah, all right, So it's
- 23:31Speaker 2: gonna you're gonna be able to timegate yourself a little bit.
- 23:33Speaker 2: You're gonna be able to bring costs down based on
- 23:36Speaker 2: the volume of your production, but spin up more if
- 23:38Speaker 2: you need it. So everyone has a cloud production everybody
- 23:43Speaker 2: has some sort of cloud production service, which it's going
- 23:46Speaker 2: to in my opinion, it's gonna go towards a SaaS
- 23:49Speaker 2: model software as a service model, meaning software will be
- 23:54Speaker 2: available to you in the cloud. You pay for it
- 23:57Speaker 2: to be installed on your your Amazon Webon instance or
- 24:00Speaker 2: a Zoo or whatever, and then you use it and
- 24:04Speaker 2: then when it's off, you don't pay for it. You
- 24:06Speaker 2: could spin it up, you pay for it, it's off,
- 24:08Speaker 2: you don't pay for it. So you're gonna be able
- 24:10Speaker 2: to get more money for your volume of content than
- 24:14Speaker 2: if you just had hardware on prem One of.
- 24:16Speaker 1: The big companies that has really gone deep into SAS
- 24:20Speaker 1: is Adobe, and you know, I've talked about my issues
- 24:23Speaker 1: that I've had recently with Adobe, But were they there
- 24:26Speaker 1: because they they are putting out some really great products
- 24:29Speaker 1: when it comes to the post production process of whether
- 24:34Speaker 1: it be photography or videography or or even film.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean you had black Magic, Adobe, Avid, all
- 24:41Speaker 2: the major all the major partners, all the major players
- 24:44Speaker 2: in that space were there showcasing their stuff. It was
- 24:47Speaker 2: cool to be able to walk around and you'd go
- 24:49Speaker 2: over towards the Adobe booth and they'd have an editor
- 24:53Speaker 2: from a major movie picture giving a talk showing their
- 24:56Speaker 2: timeline on the screen and how they did it and
- 24:58Speaker 2: how they used gender, you know, how they used AI
- 25:01Speaker 2: or how they you know, basically showing how.
- 25:02Speaker 1: They did things that had to be great to see.
- 25:05Speaker 2: And then they had workshops. I could have sat and
- 25:06Speaker 2: done workshops on generative AI with Firefly and other things
- 25:11Speaker 2: like that. So they're all there, and they're all pushing
- 25:13Speaker 2: towards AI. Yeah, and they're all going software as a service.
- 25:16Speaker 2: I mean, that's just the way it is, and I
- 25:18Speaker 2: don't foresee it ever going back to not that way
- 25:21Speaker 2: because they it's so much easier for them to push
- 25:25Speaker 2: forward in terms of advancement and technology then say we're
- 25:30Speaker 2: going to gate this behind the news version, right and
- 25:33Speaker 2: forcing you to pay for a new version. You can
- 25:36Speaker 2: just pay X about a month and get the most
- 25:38Speaker 2: up to date and keep me keep moving forward and
- 25:41Speaker 2: you can choose when you stop and you know that
- 25:43Speaker 2: kind of stuff.
- 25:44Speaker 1: But all right, so I have to ask have you
- 25:46Speaker 1: been to CES the Consumer Electronics Show? All right, so
- 25:51Speaker 1: you've been down to Navy. So now what we have
- 25:53Speaker 1: to do is we have to plan for you to
- 25:55Speaker 1: be able to go to CES in January. Uh so
- 25:59Speaker 1: that that way you can kind of compare them and
- 26:01Speaker 1: see which one kind of holds more interest for you.
- 26:04Speaker 1: So you could check that out because either way.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I mean I've followed CEES and I
- 26:08Speaker 2: know you guys have been to CS and the Consumer
- 26:11Speaker 2: Electronic Show. It's intrigues me because I'm a techie. But
- 26:16Speaker 2: I don't care about robots. I don't care about vacuum
- 26:18Speaker 2: robots and you know ring doorbells that are gonna, yeah,
- 26:24Speaker 2: shock the delivery guy when he doesn't deliver my package.
- 26:26Speaker 2: I don't know. Like it's stuff like that that that's
- 26:29Speaker 2: a good thought. Like I like conferences and you know,
- 26:32Speaker 2: everybody told me, it's like, oh, make sure you wear
- 26:34Speaker 2: good shoes. And because you're gonna walk a lot. It's like,
- 26:37Speaker 2: it's not like I haven't been to conventions, right, I
- 26:39Speaker 2: just haven't been to broadcast. I've been to gaming conventions.
- 26:42Speaker 2: I've been to other conventions. So it's like, I know
- 26:44Speaker 2: I'm gonna walk a lot, but.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Right, all right, So we got to take a break.
- 26:48Speaker 1: So here's what we're gonna do. For those watching the video,
- 26:51Speaker 1: and you might want to jump in check out the video.
- 26:53Speaker 1: We're gonna air the walkthrough that Sean did for the
- 26:57Speaker 1: National Association Broadcasters Show. Watch that. We'll come back on
- 27:02Speaker 1: the radio with more of tech talk Radio. Matter of fact,
- 27:04Speaker 1: if you've been thinking about getting one of those electric
- 27:07Speaker 1: power banks, why you want to do that? Sean is
- 27:10Speaker 1: a great example of that. When we come back, I'm
- 27:12Speaker 1: aye Taylor.
- 27:13Speaker 2: I'm sure to wear it. Find us on the web
- 27:14Speaker 2: at tech talk radio dot com. We'll be rebetd And
- 27:16Speaker 2: now back to tech talk Radio. Before the break, eighty
- 27:20Speaker 2: was mentioned that I was gonna talk about my DJA
- 27:24Speaker 2: power bank that I bought. We talked a little bit
- 27:26Speaker 2: about because I saw it. They were at an A
- 27:28Speaker 2: B and I'm boy, am I glad I bought it?
- 27:30Speaker 1: Now you got you got it. It was a like
- 27:32Speaker 1: a push sail that just showed up in your inbox.
- 27:36Speaker 2: I got an email from djssay and get up to
- 27:39Speaker 2: forty percent off or something.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Wow.
- 27:41Speaker 2: And then I saw that it was on sale on
- 27:44Speaker 2: Amazon for like thirty percent off, and I was like,
- 27:47Speaker 2: there's no way if I put this code in, it's
- 27:49Speaker 2: gonna give you more than that. And sure off, I
- 27:52Speaker 2: put the code in and it dropped it down to
- 27:53Speaker 2: like three ninety nine or something. It was ridiculous. I
- 27:56Speaker 2: got it for I got it for way cheaper than
- 27:57Speaker 2: I should have. So it's it's the DJI power Bank
- 28:00Speaker 2: one thousands, enormous. It's pretty big, but it's got uh,
- 28:05Speaker 2: it's got a C out, it's got DC out, and
- 28:07Speaker 2: it's got the ability to plug into solar panels to
- 28:10Speaker 2: charge it.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Is that a Buddy sticker you have on the top
- 28:12Speaker 1: of that, Yeah?
- 28:15Speaker 2: An alien an alienware sticker, a Bucky sticker. We had
- 28:19Speaker 2: a really bad storm come through central and northern Indiana
- 28:26Speaker 2: beginning of the month, okay, and we're watching to roll through,
- 28:31Speaker 2: no big deal, and then oh, delights just flickered. Oh oh,
- 28:37Speaker 2: and then the power's out.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Oh man.
- 28:40Speaker 2: So most of our area, the Greater South Bend area
- 28:45Speaker 2: didn't have power. Right, it was four o'clock. It was
- 28:49Speaker 2: a Sunday. It was four o'clock in the afternoon. Right,
- 28:51Speaker 2: it wasn't too bad. So we were like, okay, whatever,
- 28:53Speaker 2: we weathered it out. It was like, let's yeah, powers out.
- 28:57Speaker 2: What are we gonna do? Yeah? Then Max is like
- 28:59Speaker 2: I want to oh boy, oh, how are we going
- 29:03Speaker 2: to do that?
- 29:04Speaker 1: Right now?
- 29:05Speaker 2: It's getting dark? How do we We're gonna turn some
- 29:07Speaker 2: lights on? So I was like, oh hey, let me
- 29:09Speaker 2: run into the basement. So I ran into the basement.
- 29:11Speaker 2: I pulled this bad boy outright, and I plugged into
- 29:15Speaker 2: lamp to it. And then I was like, well, why
- 29:18Speaker 2: don't I My UPS is on? I have a UPS
- 29:21Speaker 2: plugged into my internet, which so my internet never went out.
- 29:26Speaker 2: So I was like, oh, I still WiFi. That's good.
- 29:29Speaker 2: The cell phone service in our neighborhood stinks. So I
- 29:33Speaker 2: was like, oh, I have Wi Fi, but how long
- 29:34Speaker 2: the UPS will last?
- 29:35Speaker 1: Right?
- 29:36Speaker 2: So I plugged in one of my lamps to this,
- 29:39Speaker 2: and I plugged in the powership that fed my internet,
- 29:44Speaker 2: and we had internet in a light in our living room.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Oh cool, all right.
- 29:49Speaker 2: And it has a power draw meaning on it and
- 29:52Speaker 2: those three things the motem, the router, my TV and
- 29:56Speaker 2: the lamp. It said it was going to run like
- 29:58Speaker 2: nineteen hours.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? Nineteen hours? Oh that's great. I
- 30:03Speaker 1: was sticking in the tops maybe two hours?
- 30:05Speaker 2: No, no, no it It gives you a power draw
- 30:08Speaker 2: and I think it was pulling something like forty watts
- 30:11Speaker 2: of power me right, So every and then I thought, well,
- 30:16Speaker 2: I probably need to turn it plug my fridge.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Oh there you go, good, good eye.
- 30:20Speaker 2: So I ran an extension cord to this and powered
- 30:24Speaker 2: my fridge.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Did it draw very much? Oh?
- 30:28Speaker 2: It threw a lot more. And then it said, oh,
- 30:30Speaker 2: you like about ten hours?
- 30:32Speaker 1: Still, that's good.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Yeah. And then and then then at that point, I,
- 30:37Speaker 2: you know, once we knew we weren't gonna be we
- 30:38Speaker 2: were gonna be without power for more than twenty four hours.
- 30:42Speaker 2: I have a thirty five hundred watt inverter generator that
- 30:46Speaker 2: I ran outside, turned it on, ran the extension cord
- 30:49Speaker 2: in the house, and you know, powered the fridge and
- 30:51Speaker 2: the freezer and took the load off this from the
- 30:54Speaker 2: fridge right, but this was great.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Could you charge now? Could you charge that at this
- 31:00Speaker 1: same time off the thirty five hundred generator outside?
- 31:04Speaker 2: You sure can. There's this fancy little switch on the
- 31:07Speaker 2: front that says twelve hundred watts or six hundred watts. Well,
- 31:13Speaker 2: when I plugged it in, it was in the twelve
- 31:14Speaker 2: hundred wat mode, and boy did my generator let me
- 31:17Speaker 2: know it was pulling twelve hundred watts.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Oh oh, I plugged it.
- 31:21Speaker 2: I plugged it into charge, and my generator took it.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Was like, whoa, hey, I gotta put more power out
- 31:27Speaker 2: because then I then I looked, and then my generator
- 31:30Speaker 2: definitely the generator kicked into high mode because it was pulling.
- 31:34Speaker 2: It was pulling twelve hundred watts right just to charge
- 31:37Speaker 2: this let alone also run my fridge and the freezer.
- 31:40Speaker 2: So I was like, okay, I'm gonna back that down
- 31:42Speaker 2: a little bit. So I put it in the six
- 31:44Speaker 2: hundred watt mode and it settled down a little bit.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Nice.
- 31:49Speaker 2: When when we got power back, we were without power
- 31:52Speaker 2: for almost we were over forty eight hours, so we
- 31:54Speaker 2: had power for two So when this was plugged into
- 31:58Speaker 2: the generator, charge and then obviously when I when it
- 32:00Speaker 2: was full, I just ran the the other the pieces
- 32:03Speaker 2: that I needed off just this. You know cell phones,
- 32:06Speaker 2: it's got USBC on the front. So we plugged our
- 32:08Speaker 2: cell phones into it, plumped our smart watches into it
- 32:11Speaker 2: overnight and but from like like a ten percent charge
- 32:18Speaker 2: on this when it was finally like our I needed
- 32:21Speaker 2: to charge it. Once our power came back on, right,
- 32:23Speaker 2: this thing went from zero like like a ten or
- 32:25Speaker 2: twelve percent charge to full in like thirty five minutes.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Wow, that's amazing.
- 32:29Speaker 2: It was. It was crazy because it just it just
- 32:32Speaker 2: yanks so much power out of the out of the ether,
- 32:36Speaker 2: and it was really great. So very happy with the
- 32:39Speaker 2: DJI power one thousand.
- 32:42Speaker 1: How much now that was? You got it for three
- 32:44Speaker 1: ninety nine? What do they normally go for.
- 32:46Speaker 2: At only seven hundred bucks? I have to look to
- 32:48Speaker 2: see if going for Amazon. Right now, let's look Amazon,
- 32:51Speaker 2: Let's see what she's got.
- 32:52Speaker 1: I know that in you know, southern Arizona, we deal
- 32:55Speaker 1: with monsoons quite a bit and we've had those situations
- 32:59Speaker 1: where you we've lost power for an extended period of time.
- 33:02Speaker 1: This would be pretty good to have around. I mean,
- 33:05Speaker 1: ups these are great, but again those are you know,
- 33:08Speaker 1: most UPS's are designed so that'll give you time to
- 33:11Speaker 1: shut down your computer systems so you don't have any
- 33:14Speaker 1: data corruption or whatnot. This is a way to go
- 33:17Speaker 1: beyond that and actually power your stuff.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and you could obviously have it plugged into power
- 33:24Speaker 2: and be feeding it off the AC side. So if
- 33:27Speaker 2: you wanted to treat this as a UPS you really
- 33:30Speaker 2: could and dry your power from the AC side while
- 33:35Speaker 2: still plugged in charging. I wouldn't recommend that. It's just
- 33:38Speaker 2: gonna yeah, yeah, decrease the LFE of the battery, but
- 33:42Speaker 2: they are six ninety nine.
- 33:45Speaker 1: That's still not bad. I mean it's something to have,
- 33:47Speaker 1: and they the battery in that will continue to last.
- 33:51Speaker 1: You just recharge it. It's not like disposable. Once it's done,
- 33:54Speaker 1: it's done. No, that doesn't work that way.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Yeah. But what I also like too is on the
- 33:58Speaker 2: side I didn't notice before it, but there are quarter
- 34:03Speaker 2: twenty right mounting holes here, so like I could mount
- 34:07Speaker 2: tripod arms or other pieces on here. I could mount
- 34:10Speaker 2: things on here with the quarter twenty mounts like a
- 34:13Speaker 2: ramball mount too. I could put an accessory on or
- 34:17Speaker 2: you know, so there are mounting options available quarter twenty
- 34:21Speaker 2: on the side so you can put. Wow, I don't
- 34:25Speaker 2: even know what you want to mount on there, but
- 34:26Speaker 2: like I can imagine like maybe mounting an umbrella or
- 34:32Speaker 2: all holder for your phone or some other piece of
- 34:36Speaker 2: hardware you'd want to mount it.
- 34:38Speaker 1: When it comes to the power banks, if you don't
- 34:42Speaker 1: charge it, obviously you're not going to get a full
- 34:45Speaker 1: charge out of it. When you do a full charge
- 34:48Speaker 1: on it and you just put it aside and you're
- 34:50Speaker 1: not using it, does it retain that or over time
- 34:54Speaker 1: does it tend to just dwindle up? So we've seen
- 34:56Speaker 1: some devices actually go pretty quick.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Well, So this is the newer chemistry, right, the life
- 35:04Speaker 2: lithium iron phosphate, lithium iron light life PO four Okay,
- 35:11Speaker 2: lithium iron phoss whatever it's called life life PO for
- 35:15Speaker 2: you'll see, that's the newest kind of chemistry for these
- 35:18Speaker 2: types of batteries. And that's what's in here, right, So
- 35:21Speaker 2: I know, so that the chemistry is made to retain
- 35:25Speaker 2: its charge better, it can have a higher amp draw
- 35:29Speaker 2: on it, and it can also use more of the
- 35:33Speaker 2: total capacity of the battery without having to be recharged.
- 35:36Speaker 2: So I just also for my camper, UH just bought
- 35:42Speaker 2: a new one hundred amp hower battery for my twelve
- 35:47Speaker 2: volt battery for the camper with the new solar charger,
- 35:50Speaker 2: plus another one hundred solar panel for that also so
- 35:53Speaker 2: that I can have that or camping in addition to this.
- 35:57Speaker 2: So off the grid, we'll go there, you go, not really,
- 36:00Speaker 2: but we're gonna be able to survive a little bit
- 36:03Speaker 2: without running the gas.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Janitor, this was your first chance to really put it
- 36:06Speaker 1: through the big trial, and you're you're very happy with that, then, yeah.
- 36:09Speaker 2: I mean it was. I just went and got it,
- 36:12Speaker 2: turned it on, plugged in a lamp, and then ran
- 36:14Speaker 2: an extension cord over to the UPS that was powering
- 36:18Speaker 2: my my internet router and my motem and my TV
- 36:24Speaker 2: and we had zero issues with staying connected. Uh and
- 36:27Speaker 2: Max getting his YouTube fix. That's great during the power So.
- 36:31Speaker 1: That's great because you know the kids, they need to
- 36:33Speaker 1: be entertained.
- 36:35Speaker 2: But it's funny because Max we had to explain to
- 36:40Speaker 2: like the powers out, like YouTube doesn't work, and the
- 36:44Speaker 2: lights in his room didn't work, so like his his
- 36:46Speaker 2: moon nightlight wasn't working, the hatch wasn't working, so like
- 36:49Speaker 2: he didn't have so it was a lot more quiet
- 36:51Speaker 2: in his room, like he didn't have the sound you know,
- 36:53Speaker 2: the white noise machine. Right, so that like the next
- 36:57Speaker 2: you know, the next night where we had power, when
- 36:59Speaker 2: he turned the light on his room, he got excited. Oh,
- 37:02Speaker 2: the power's back, Like he understood that we didn't have power.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Now it's back and the light works on power. So
- 37:07Speaker 2: it was kind of a cool experience for him to see,
- 37:09Speaker 2: like power is required for a lot of the stuff
- 37:13Speaker 2: that makes life convenient for us.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, all right. I wanted to mention zd net
- 37:20Speaker 1: and Ed Bott has been on this show before. We
- 37:23Speaker 1: had to Ed on gosh early early on tech Talk Radio,
- 37:28Speaker 1: and Ed talked about the deals he's been talking about
- 37:32Speaker 1: the deals with Windows eleven and Windows ten. There is
- 37:35Speaker 1: a great article from Ed if you go to zd
- 37:37Speaker 1: net about how to if you can still do it,
- 37:42Speaker 1: go from Windows ten to Windows eleven. Now October is
- 37:46Speaker 1: when support for Windows ten will end. It does not
- 37:51Speaker 1: mean your Windows ten computer will stop working. There'll be
- 37:54Speaker 1: a paid support version if you feel like doing that.
- 37:57Speaker 1: But again some people have said, I, well, I was
- 37:59Speaker 1: just wat upgrade my computer. You know, if I could
- 38:01Speaker 1: have upgraded my computer in the studio from ten to
- 38:04Speaker 1: eleven easily, I wouldn't have lost some software that I
- 38:08Speaker 1: needed to do that. So right now, that Windows eleven
- 38:11Speaker 1: machine I built, it's just sitting in the corner because
- 38:14Speaker 1: I can't put the software on that to get it
- 38:16Speaker 1: to work for what I need to do in here.
- 38:19Speaker 1: But zd net also had a story this week about
- 38:21Speaker 1: some of the problems that Microsoft is running into and
- 38:25Speaker 1: it just makes you wonder what's going on there with
- 38:28Speaker 1: a patch that they had put out and it caused
- 38:29Speaker 1: some problems.
- 38:32Speaker 2: They the Microsoft has been shooting himself in the foot.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:37Speaker 2: First it was the recall stuff with you know, hey,
- 38:40Speaker 2: we're going to snapshot your computer every two minutes and
- 38:43Speaker 2: upload it to the cloud. No you're not, You're not
- 38:47Speaker 2: not in my computer. And then they had issues with
- 38:51Speaker 2: USB devices in a recent patch, and now they're all
- 38:57Speaker 2: claiming it's for security. But there's a new patch that
- 39:01Speaker 2: came out for Windows eleven twenty four h two that
- 39:08Speaker 2: created what what they're calling a mysterious empty folder.
- 39:12Speaker 1: The folder is called pub say I've seen.
- 39:15Speaker 2: It, yeah, And apparently that folder is there to spoof
- 39:21Speaker 2: malware into trying to take control of this folder. I
- 39:25Speaker 2: don't know, but if you but if you delete that
- 39:27Speaker 2: folder because you don't know what it is and don't
- 39:29Speaker 2: know where it came from, good luck with your future
- 39:32Speaker 2: Windows updates, because it will could cause problems because it's
- 39:36Speaker 2: looking for that folder. It doesn't know where that folder is,
- 39:38Speaker 2: and you who knows what problems you're gonna start having.
- 39:40Speaker 2: It's like somebody telling you to go and delete your
- 39:42Speaker 2: system thirty two folder.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Oh man, not good. Yeah, no, don't do that, by
- 39:47Speaker 1: the way, Yeah, please don't.
- 39:49Speaker 2: But yeah, it's just Windows. I mean, it's it's it's
- 39:54Speaker 2: it's gotta be hard to release software that is so
- 39:59Speaker 2: ma consumed around the world, right, in so many different
- 40:02Speaker 2: languages and so many different platforms, in so many different scenarios.
- 40:06Speaker 1: So many different pieces.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Yeah, so many mission critical places. Right, You're never going
- 40:12Speaker 2: to catch every little bug. But I mean, come on,
- 40:16Speaker 2: it's it's it's just it's unacceptable. Things like the USB
- 40:21Speaker 2: driver issues, where if you upgraded and all of a
- 40:23Speaker 2: sudden you just don't have USB, your USB devices aren't
- 40:26Speaker 2: going to work anymore.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I think that's our shared folders that we have from
- 40:30Speaker 1: one office to to another. They went away once we
- 40:33Speaker 1: went to Windows eleven.
- 40:34Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean, I just don't know and like
- 40:39Speaker 2: and then Microsoft telling you, oh, yeah, by the way,
- 40:43Speaker 2: you are not going to be able to create a window.
- 40:46Speaker 2: You're not gonna be able to install Windows anymore without
- 40:49Speaker 2: creating an account, and you can't use the super secret
- 40:52Speaker 2: code to bypass the log in anymore. You have to Yeah,
- 40:57Speaker 2: you have to create account with Microsoft to install Windows,
- 41:00Speaker 2: which is a bunch of bs in my opinion. And
- 41:04Speaker 2: because I just talked about this building, you know, building
- 41:07Speaker 2: the PC for my in laws their laptop, and the
- 41:11Speaker 2: code didn't work, so maybe I got an early version
- 41:14Speaker 2: of that that were that code didn't work anymore, and
- 41:16Speaker 2: I had to build them a profile using his his
- 41:20Speaker 2: hotmail or his Gmail account through Microsoft, and then it
- 41:23Speaker 2: created them having the one drive desktop and then he
- 41:26Speaker 2: put all his files on there. It was out of space.
- 41:29Speaker 1: It was as Yeah, it was a mess.
- 41:31Speaker 2: So like, just give me an operating system, let me decide,
- 41:36Speaker 2: let me decide what I want to do. Yeah, I
- 41:39Speaker 2: paid I paid for it. I paid for Windows. Like,
- 41:41Speaker 2: I'm not saying this because I got a free upgrade
- 41:43Speaker 2: to Windows eleven. I paid for I've paid for two
- 41:47Speaker 2: Windows eleven pro versions. Now yep, because I want one.
- 41:50Speaker 2: I have one on my play around machine, and I
- 41:54Speaker 2: have one on my gaming lots on my gaming PC,
- 41:56Speaker 2: like I want to have the features that are included
- 41:58Speaker 2: with one is eleven Pro. But dear God, make it
- 42:02Speaker 2: a little easier for me to do what I want
- 42:04Speaker 2: to do without having to sign up and give you
- 42:07Speaker 2: all my data. I don't care like I'm paying you.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. All right, listen, we got to take another break.
- 42:13Speaker 1: We come back with more of tech talk Radio. We
- 42:15Speaker 1: got more stuff. We have listener email, and we'd love
- 42:18Speaker 1: to be able to answer your questions for you, so
- 42:20Speaker 1: we'll get to those questions coming up with more of

- 42:55Speaker 1: you can reach out to us on our Facebook page
- 42:57Speaker 1: as well. You'll find us on Facebook, Facebook, dot com,
- 43:01Speaker 1: forward slash tech Talkers. So this one from Christy in
- 43:05Speaker 1: Tucson said, Hey guys, I listened to your show whenever
- 43:08Speaker 1: I can, but I just got an email about renewing
- 43:12Speaker 1: my anti virus program Norton three sixty. It's one hundred
- 43:17Speaker 1: and nineteen bucks to renew and protect my five machines. Uh,
- 43:21Speaker 1: thinking is it worth it? What could be my options?
- 43:24Speaker 1: Thank you Christy and Tucson. Oh boy, this one. I
- 43:28Speaker 1: think we've kind of talked a little bit about this
- 43:30Speaker 1: in the past because I know you have different views
- 43:33Speaker 1: of what might be better than Norton.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Yeah, So I mean I've used I've used different anaviruses
- 43:40Speaker 2: over the years, right, Yeah, and it's not always been
- 43:44Speaker 2: just antivirus, right, it's also an anti malware.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 43:48Speaker 2: First, with antivirus, because nobody really knew what malaur was. Yeah,
- 43:51Speaker 2: you had trojan horses, you had virus attacks, so those things.
- 43:54Speaker 2: So everybody either had Norton. McAfee caster Scott set E set,
- 44:02Speaker 2: they're all they all do their job. But in the
- 44:07Speaker 2: age of security, Windows has gotten a lot better. And
- 44:13Speaker 2: I would recommend, and I think Justin and Matt let's
- 44:16Speaker 2: speak for this, and they're both IT professionals. You can
- 44:20Speaker 2: really be secure without spending money just running Windows Defender.
- 44:25Speaker 2: I mean, obviously, don't go in and turn your firewall
- 44:27Speaker 2: off and allow every port to be able to be
- 44:30Speaker 2: scanned on your computer and blah blah blah blah. By default,
- 44:33Speaker 2: a lot of that is turned off. By default. They're
- 44:35Speaker 2: protecting the users that don't know any better. But that
- 44:39Speaker 2: doesn't mean run unprotected and you know, grow surfing around
- 44:42Speaker 2: the web unprotected. Yeah, my recommendation is if you want
- 44:47Speaker 2: a little extra protection is you get malware bites. Malware
- 44:50Speaker 2: bytes is a malware program that will run and scan
- 44:53Speaker 2: and do things, and it's there there. It's run at
- 44:56Speaker 2: the enterprise level in a lot of places, so not
- 44:59Speaker 2: just personal. And so I run personally, I run malware
- 45:04Speaker 2: bites and it protects my PC.
- 45:08Speaker 1: We've even had it come up. You go to a
- 45:10Speaker 1: website that's a legitimate website, they're feeding an AD and
- 45:14Speaker 1: the AD has malware features in that ad. Malware bites
- 45:19Speaker 1: will flag it. It does a good job. So yeah,
- 45:23Speaker 1: I'm looking at.
- 45:24Speaker 2: To see what malur bytes would be to include multiple devices.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, that's the thing. Norton's deal and I'm on Norton.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Norton's steal is five machines. I know that for a fact,
- 45:37Speaker 1: and yet it is about one hundred nineteen bucks to
- 45:39Speaker 1: renew it. One thing about Norton three sixty if you know,
- 45:42Speaker 1: it's it's been a good antivirus program, but it's very naggy.
- 45:47Speaker 1: So you pop in a you know, an expanded drive,
- 45:51Speaker 1: it wants to search it for you. You get pop
- 45:53Speaker 1: ups all the time about would you like to do this?
- 45:56Speaker 1: Would you like to do that? It will try to
- 45:58Speaker 1: sell you add ons like LifeLock, which Symantec Norton owns,
- 46:03Speaker 1: so it'll try and you know, sell you for a
- 46:05Speaker 1: membership in that to protect yourself for that information and
- 46:08Speaker 1: get out there on the web. Again, I'm not saying
- 46:10Speaker 1: it's a bad program. We've had representatives on the show.
- 46:13Speaker 1: I like it, but there are other options. Now, what
- 46:16Speaker 1: were you able to find out?
- 46:18Speaker 2: So I have the standard plan for melerbyites, right, and
- 46:23Speaker 2: it's just one device, So I'm only running it on
- 46:25Speaker 2: just my PC. I thought I was running it on
- 46:27Speaker 2: more but just one, and I think I pay like
- 46:30Speaker 2: six bucks a month.
- 46:32Speaker 1: That's not bad, Yeah, if I wanted to do so.
- 46:35Speaker 2: I just bumped it up to the next the plus
- 46:37Speaker 2: plan with five devices, so that would equal what she
- 46:40Speaker 2: has for her Norton and it's sixteen sixteen twenty eight
- 46:44Speaker 2: a month for five devices. That gives you the security,
- 46:48Speaker 2: the browser guard which runs in the background basically looks
- 46:50Speaker 2: at ads and all that stuff.
- 46:51Speaker 1: So it's actually more expensive than Norton three sixty for
- 46:54Speaker 1: the five.
- 46:56Speaker 2: Yeah, but that also gives you the VPN. I don't
- 46:58Speaker 2: know if the Norton three sixty gives you in Norton VPN.
- 47:01Speaker 2: So I mean you're it's apples and apples at this point.
- 47:05Speaker 2: I just know that Norton does not always have the
- 47:08Speaker 2: best reputation in the industry. It's good, But you said,
- 47:11Speaker 2: I prefer melourbites just just because that's what I'm used to.
- 47:14Speaker 2: It's what we use at the university, it's what I've
- 47:16Speaker 2: used at other places i've worked. There are plenty of
- 47:19Speaker 2: options out there, right, just try to avoid the free ones.
- 47:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, try to avoid what was the other there
- 47:31Speaker 1: was another one that began with an A I can't
- 47:33Speaker 1: remember the name of it.
- 47:35Speaker 2: I can't remember either, but yeah, just try to avoid
- 47:39Speaker 2: the free ones because they'll try and get the try
- 47:41Speaker 2: and hook you into well just scan your PC and
- 47:43Speaker 2: paid five a month or And I still personally like
- 47:50Speaker 2: running sea cleaner.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I've heard different about that where people some people
- 47:55Speaker 1: say CE sea cleaner is great. I'll just will say
- 47:58Speaker 1: it created a nightmare.
- 48:00Speaker 2: I have not had any issues with it. I use
- 48:02Speaker 2: it just to do just registery clean up and some
- 48:05Speaker 2: they have a really great uninstallation tool in their program
- 48:08Speaker 2: where you can just uninstall programs really quickly through that.
- 48:11Speaker 2: I mean you can do that now with Windows. It's
- 48:13Speaker 2: gotten better in Windows before where you had to just
- 48:15Speaker 2: to try and fight all the install files.
- 48:17Speaker 1: And some of these companies though, will put a lot
- 48:20Speaker 1: of files in different places, and from what I've heard,
- 48:23Speaker 1: CC cleaner can go in there and do that.
- 48:26Speaker 2: But I will say that CC cleaner has not had
- 48:30Speaker 2: the greatest security record about I want this has probably
- 48:35Speaker 2: been about six or seven years now. They actually delivered
- 48:40Speaker 2: an update to CCA Cleaner that was malware. A Iranian
- 48:48Speaker 2: hacker team was able to get into the back end
- 48:52Speaker 2: and attached malware to the install file for Seat Cleaner.
- 48:55Speaker 2: So everybody that did the update that version of Sea
- 48:58Speaker 2: Cleaner got malware.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Not good.
- 49:01Speaker 2: So all right, not good for security company.
- 49:03Speaker 1: But so for Christy, you recommend malwour bites as one
- 49:06Speaker 1: to look at.
- 49:07Speaker 2: Yeah, malwaar bites. And then if you really want to
- 49:09Speaker 2: do a deep skin or a deep dive on your machine,
- 49:11Speaker 2: spybot search and destroy is a good one. Just avoid
- 49:15Speaker 2: the free ones. I mean, you could pay for Norton.
- 49:17Speaker 2: It's gonna be you know, like I said, six one
- 49:20Speaker 2: way half it does the other. If you're still using Norton,
- 49:23Speaker 2: you're comfortable with dead it's already on your devices. Go
- 49:25Speaker 2: with Norton. It's not gonna hurt anything, all right. Malwaur
- 49:28Speaker 2: bites is just kind of another alternative.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Do you want to pick that? Next question that we got?
- 49:32Speaker 1: The next question is, okay, this is a fun one,
- 49:36Speaker 1: all right.
- 49:37Speaker 2: I found a folder on my computer that had everything
- 49:41Speaker 2: that had a bunch.
- 49:42Speaker 1: Of flash videos flash videos.
- 49:44Speaker 2: When I click on them, I can't do anything because
- 49:46Speaker 2: I no longer have flash on my computer. Okay, there
- 49:49Speaker 2: are a way to see.
- 49:50Speaker 1: These, that's flv's right, isn't that good question?
- 49:53Speaker 2: Bill Chandler from Arizona.
- 49:55Speaker 1: No, it's actually Bill from Chandler, Arizona.
- 49:58Speaker 2: Bill from Chandler, Arizona.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Thank you Bill, Sorry, grammar is important.
- 50:04Speaker 2: You put this in there. Andy, it looks like Chandler
- 50:07Speaker 2: from Arizona.
- 50:08Speaker 1: Yes. Uh so flash videos flv's uh yeah, flash was big.
- 50:14Speaker 1: It was one time everything. You went to a website,
- 50:16Speaker 1: if it didn't have flash, it was a letdown. If
- 50:19Speaker 1: it had flash, it was oh. But then they found
- 50:21Speaker 1: out there were a lot of problems with flash, and
- 50:24Speaker 1: people moved to word press or that type of technology.
- 50:28Speaker 1: You know flash. You go to a website now if
- 50:30Speaker 1: you still see you might see a placeholder it said
- 50:33Speaker 1: you know flash, and you're, oh boy, that needs an update.
- 50:37Speaker 1: What do you do? How do you watch a flash
- 50:38Speaker 1: video on your computer?
- 50:39Speaker 2: You have to you'd have to convert them.
- 50:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean so.
- 50:44Speaker 2: I'll recommend my handy dandy web tool right handbreak, handbreak,
- 50:50Speaker 2: Oh well, handbreak are handbreak can convert flash videos?
- 50:54Speaker 1: All right?
- 50:55Speaker 2: You could probably find a lot of free converters online
- 50:58Speaker 2: for flash videos.
- 50:58Speaker 1: How about VLC. It might just play them, it may
- 51:03Speaker 1: not convert them.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it may it may not play them, it'll it'll Yeah.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Vlc is is probably the best media player in the world.
- 51:12Speaker 2: All Right, it's free, download it. It'll play literally anything
- 51:16Speaker 2: you give it.
- 51:16Speaker 1: Just be careful where you get it from, but make.
- 51:20Speaker 2: Sure you get it from there from their website.
- 51:22Speaker 1: All Right, we got to take another quick break to
- 51:26Speaker 1: see it one of those. All right, Bill Chandler or
- 51:28Speaker 1: Bill from Chandler Arizona. Hopefully that helped you. But take
- 51:31Speaker 1: a look at LC if you want to convert them.
- 51:33Speaker 1: I know Movavi does that. Handbreak is great because that's
- 51:37Speaker 1: a free one, and then you may be able to
- 51:39Speaker 1: go a little deeper into handbreak and find out how
- 51:41Speaker 1: to maybe rip your DVDs that you own that you
- 51:45Speaker 1: can have digital copies of them. It's a great, great
- 51:47Speaker 1: way to use that program. All Right, we'll be back
- 51:49Speaker 1: with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 51:52Speaker 2: I'm sean to Whirred. Follow us on x at tech
- 51:54Speaker 2: Talk Radio.
- 51:55Speaker 1: We'll be right back on television. This past week I
- 51:58Speaker 1: got a chance to share something really cool, the slim,
- 52:02Speaker 1: small design keyboard from Logitech called the Keys to Go to.
- 52:07Speaker 1: It connects to your smartphone, whether it be an Android
- 52:12Speaker 1: or an iPhone, your laptop, your desktop, your any device
- 52:17Speaker 1: that can accept the Bluetooth connection. Keyboard, and it could
- 52:21Speaker 1: be folded and stored away. Matter of fact, it's small
- 52:24Speaker 1: enough that you could fold it and put it in
- 52:26Speaker 1: your jacket pocket, your inside jacket pocket. So when you
- 52:30Speaker 1: need a keyboard, you've got it. The only thing is
- 52:32Speaker 1: some people have said, well, wait a minute. It retails
- 52:35Speaker 1: for about seventy nine bucks, but the K four to
- 52:38Speaker 1: eighty from Logitech is cheaper. You may be able to
- 52:42Speaker 1: find that for around forty five fifty dollars, and they
- 52:45Speaker 1: both have Bluetooth. They both have a selector switch, so
- 52:48Speaker 1: you can switch it from Bluetooth one, two or three.
- 52:51Speaker 1: So say you've got your smartphone in front of you,
- 52:53Speaker 1: you got a tablet, you want to control the tablet,
- 52:56Speaker 1: you just flip the switch and you can control the tablet.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Flip it to the other one. You can control your smartphone.
- 53:01Speaker 1: Now your smartphone will work good on that well, if
- 53:05Speaker 1: you use a Google Docs or something along that line,
- 53:09Speaker 1: you want to type, or you're using you know, your
- 53:11Speaker 1: notes in your your iPhone. Either way, you might take
- 53:15Speaker 1: a look at it. If you haven't seen it yet.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Again that's from Logitech. The keys to go to pretty
- 53:20Speaker 1: good stuff. I don't I don't know. I like the
- 53:22Speaker 1: K four eighty because it's got a little rest there.
- 53:25Speaker 1: But that's what I showed on TV. I also showed
- 53:27Speaker 1: it connected to a monitor and we used a J
- 53:31Speaker 1: five create it's an HGMI USBC off my Android device
- 53:37Speaker 1: to actually put put our smartphone away and use a
- 53:40Speaker 1: bigger monitor use that keyboard. And it was actually pretty
- 53:43Speaker 1: pretty cool thing.
- 53:44Speaker 2: So I mean this, I just I didn't know about this,
- 53:47Speaker 2: so I just looked it up. This it's pretty cool.
- 53:49Speaker 1: It's tiny, It's really small, and it's got to cover
- 53:52Speaker 1: on it, so you could close it up and again
- 53:54Speaker 1: put it in your laptop bag or put it into
- 53:56Speaker 1: your your your your jacket pocket if you're wearing a
- 53:59Speaker 1: jacket pocket or your and there's.
- 54:01Speaker 2: There's some different colors you can get. It's cool.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Yes, I mean this would.
- 54:07Speaker 2: Be great, like if you're traveling and you have a
- 54:08Speaker 2: laptop and you don't want to use the laptop keyboard, Graphite,
- 54:12Speaker 2: pale gray, and lilac.
