- 0:03Speaker 1: I get everybody. I'm Dan Horde and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: The Bengals Booth Podcast. The this one goes out to
- 0:11Speaker 1: the one I Love addition, as I sit down for
- 0:16Speaker 1: a round of fun facts with the first player to
- 0:18Speaker 1: wear the number one in Bengals history, Numero Uno himself,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Jamar Chase. He'll share his impression of Joe Burrow when
- 0:26Speaker 1: they met at LSU, describe being singled out by President
- 0:30Speaker 1: Trump at the White House, and discuss his passion for fashion.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Then I'll spend a few minutes with free agent offensive
- 0:38Speaker 1: lineman Riley Reef roughly two months after he signed on
- 0:41Speaker 1: the dotted line with Cincinnati. And finally, it's my choice
- 0:45Speaker 1: for the Bengals best under the radar draft pick this year.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'll tell you who it is and why I feel
- 0:51Speaker 1: that way, and then we'll hear from one of his
- 0:54Speaker 1: college coaches. The Bengals Booth Podcast is presented by Bud Light,
- 0:58Speaker 1: seltzer Reef Fresh the Game and here's a quick reminder
- 1:02Speaker 1: that you can have the latest edition of this podcast
- 1:05Speaker 1: delivered right to your phone, tablet, or computer by subscribing
- 1:09Speaker 1: on Itune, Stitcher, Google Play, Spotify, or pod Bean. It's
- 1:13Speaker 1: the greatest thing since Billions. From time to time on
- 1:18Speaker 1: this podcast, my greatest thing since is something that I'm
- 1:22Speaker 1: watching on TV, and more often than not, it's a
- 1:25Speaker 1: show that's several years old that I'm finally getting around
- 1:28Speaker 1: to watching on demand. That's the case with the show Billions,
- 1:33Speaker 1: that premiered on Showtime in twenty sixteen and has had
- 1:37Speaker 1: five complete seasons so far. I've watched the first two
- 1:41Speaker 1: and overall I'd give it a B plus. But having
- 1:44Speaker 1: said that, the next to last episode of season two
- 1:48Speaker 1: is one of the best hours of TV I've ever seen.
- 1:52Speaker 1: The name of the episode is Golden Frog Time, but
- 1:55Speaker 1: I'm going to call it the Ice Juice Episode. It
- 1:59Speaker 1: was so good that I wanted to immediately go back
- 2:02Speaker 1: and watch it again. So if you're looking for something
- 2:05Speaker 1: to watch, I can't vouch for all five seasons of Billions,
- 2:08Speaker 1: but the next to last episode of season two is
- 2:11Speaker 1: so good that I will strongly recommend at least watching
- 2:16Speaker 1: up to that point. Now, let's get to football. Before
- 2:20Speaker 1: we get to fun facts with Jamar Chase, here are
- 2:23Speaker 1: a few thoughts on the Bengal schedule that came out
- 2:26Speaker 1: on Wednesday night. We already knew that it was going
- 2:28Speaker 1: to be tough. If you go by last year's records,
- 2:31Speaker 1: the Bengals have the six toughest schedule in the NFL.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Nine of their seventeen games are against playoff teams from
- 2:37Speaker 1: last year. Eight of the seventeen nearly half, are against
- 2:41Speaker 1: teams that won eleven or more games. Most of those
- 2:45Speaker 1: games are the result of being in the AFC North,
- 2:48Speaker 1: since the Steelers, Ravens, and Browns all won at least
- 2:51Speaker 1: eleven last year. Only four of the Bengal seventeen games
- 2:55Speaker 1: are against teams that won five or fewer games last year.
- 2:59Speaker 1: The Jazz, Jets, Lions, and Broncos. We already knew who
- 3:04Speaker 1: they were going to play and where they were going
- 3:06Speaker 1: to play them. On Wednesday night, we learned when a
- 3:10Speaker 1: couple of things stood out to me. In the first
- 3:13Speaker 1: four weeks, the Bengals only face one team that had
- 3:15Speaker 1: a winning record last year, Pittsburgh. With home games against
- 3:19Speaker 1: Minnesota and Jacksonville and road games against the Bears and Steelers,
- 3:24Speaker 1: the Bengals have a chance to get off to a
- 3:26Speaker 1: solid start and build some early momentum, and if they
- 3:30Speaker 1: can get through their first eight games at or above
- 3:33Speaker 1: five hundred six of the bengals final nine games are
- 3:37Speaker 1: at Paul Brown Stadium. Here's hoping there's a lot at
- 3:40Speaker 1: stake when they are playing at home in December in January.
- 3:45Speaker 1: On a personal note, I don't know at this point
- 3:47Speaker 1: if I'll resume traveling this year to broadcast UC games
- 3:50Speaker 1: on Saturdays and Bengals games on Sundays. But if so,
- 3:54Speaker 1: the NFL did me a solid on a couple of weekends.
- 3:57Speaker 1: In September, UC plays Indiana on a Saturday before the
- 4:02Speaker 1: Bengals game in Chicago on Sunday, an easy four hour drive.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And in October you see plays at Navy on a
- 4:09Speaker 1: Saturday before the Bengals are in Baltimore on Sunday. That's
- 4:14Speaker 1: about as convenient as it gets. Now it's time to
- 4:18Speaker 1: get to know the person under the pads. It's my
- 4:21Speaker 1: fun facts conversation with the two nineteen bullet Nakoff Award
- 4:25Speaker 1: winner is the best receiver in college football and the
- 4:28Speaker 1: fifth overall pick in this year's draft. Time for some
- 4:32Speaker 1: fun facts with wide receiver Jamar Chase from Metaie, Louisiana. Jamar,
- 4:37Speaker 1: let's turn the clock back to when you were younger.
- 4:39Speaker 1: What were some of the things that you and your
- 4:41Speaker 1: buddies like to do growing up around New Orleans. Yeah,
- 4:44Speaker 1: growing up at Harvey we played basketball outside through tackle,
- 4:48Speaker 1: stuff like that, a snowball for the most part, you know,
- 4:52Speaker 1: for the most part, was always doing some type of
- 4:55Speaker 1: sports activity outside in the grass on the street. It
- 4:58Speaker 1: sounds like basketball first love. When did that change and why? Basketball? Chance?
- 5:04Speaker 1: After my high school coach recruited me to come to Rumma,
- 5:09Speaker 1: coach Gary. He recruited me at a football game in
- 5:12Speaker 1: a championship in my middle school. I think after what
- 5:16Speaker 1: he told me that day made me realize that I
- 5:18Speaker 1: want to play football. We're doing fun facts with Jamar Chase.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Your dad played college football at Alcorn State. How did
- 5:25Speaker 1: he impact your development on and off the field. I
- 5:28Speaker 1: would probably say he helped me the most part of
- 5:31Speaker 1: my preparation. For the most part, he always pushing me
- 5:34Speaker 1: through for everything, keeping my head on focus. And he's
- 5:38Speaker 1: almost like my manager the way he treats me, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 1: make sure I'm always on the right foots. So you know,
- 5:42Speaker 1: I can ask for nothing but that. Who was more
- 5:45Speaker 1: excited on Draft night? You or him? I think I was.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I don't think he was. I think I was more
- 5:50Speaker 1: excited than him. So I wasn't even paying attention that much.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I was too excited myself. Jamar, you won a state
- 5:57Speaker 1: championship in the long jump when you were in high school.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Did you specifically train for that or could you just
- 6:04Speaker 1: show up and win? I actually showed up and just won.
- 6:07Speaker 1: That was my first year I actually doing lun jump
- 6:09Speaker 1: and I won the state. So that was an incredible
- 6:12Speaker 1: time for me. And after I won, you know, I
- 6:15Speaker 1: started following the level rooms up. So when it came
- 6:17Speaker 1: time to pick a college, you were all set to
- 6:19Speaker 1: make the announcement on national TV at a big high
- 6:22Speaker 1: school showcase event at Nike headquarters out in Beaverton, Oregon,
- 6:27Speaker 1: and everything went haywire. Can you describe what happened? Well,
- 6:32Speaker 1: we just I know, I seven or seven, seven or
- 6:34Speaker 1: seventeen just finished a game right before the championship game.
- 6:37Speaker 1: This is right before the championship game. I was going
- 6:40Speaker 1: to announce my commitment and I was walking over there
- 6:44Speaker 1: with my hat and gloves. You know, everything's in a
- 6:47Speaker 1: box a lot, not letting anyone know. Um and I
- 6:51Speaker 1: get over there, you know, sit on for a minute
- 6:52Speaker 1: and then get back up and they tell me we
- 6:55Speaker 1: don't have any more space for you on the Internet live,
- 6:58Speaker 1: so we're just gonna have to catch you another time.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And you know, once I heard that, I was just like, hey,
- 7:03Speaker 1: this might not be the place of me. You know,
- 7:05Speaker 1: this might not be the sign guys given me. So
- 7:06Speaker 1: I think I need was taken out a chance. So
- 7:09Speaker 1: the hat was a TCU hat, right, Yes it was, Yes,
- 7:14Speaker 1: it was. So. TCU is completely bummed out that the
- 7:19Speaker 1: fact that you got bumped on that Internet show cost
- 7:23Speaker 1: them the best wide receiver in the country. I mean
- 7:26Speaker 1: it worked out for me the right way. I mean
- 7:29Speaker 1: I wouldn't change nothing about it. I mean, if I
- 7:31Speaker 1: knew the outcome at TCU, then I probably would have
- 7:33Speaker 1: a change, but I don't think I will. It worked
- 7:36Speaker 1: out great for you. It obviously worked out great for
- 7:39Speaker 1: LSU as well. You went there and your freshman year,
- 7:42Speaker 1: a quarterback shows up, the transferred in from Ohio State
- 7:46Speaker 1: named Joe Burrow. Do you remember your initial impressions of Joe.
- 7:52Speaker 1: My first time seeing Joe, Joe was a quiet dude
- 7:55Speaker 1: walking in the locker room. He didn't really say too much.
- 7:57Speaker 1: It was all about business actually. So when we then
- 8:00Speaker 1: we got on the field, Joe was show was just
- 8:02Speaker 1: out there playing football. He didn't he didn't make too
- 8:04Speaker 1: much noise, didn't he didn't say anything all the time.
- 8:07Speaker 1: He would say something when he had a correction to
- 8:08Speaker 1: what we were doing. When did you realize he was
- 8:11Speaker 1: something special? I would say my sophomore year, the summer
- 8:15Speaker 1: of my sophomore year. The way we prepared for that
- 8:17Speaker 1: season was just incredible. Um. I think Joe was the
- 8:21Speaker 1: main reason why, just how he leaded the team. You know,
- 8:24Speaker 1: the offense that year and it showed. So you were
- 8:28Speaker 1: part of a tremendous receiving room at LSU with Justin
- 8:31Speaker 1: Jefferson and Terris Marshall and others, and you guys started
- 8:35Speaker 1: a tradition called the Summer of ten thousand Catches. What
- 8:39Speaker 1: exactly was that the some of the ten thousand catches
- 8:42Speaker 1: were catching ten thousand balls every day, but not every day,
- 8:47Speaker 1: but as many as we can every day to ten thousand. Um,
- 8:50Speaker 1: I would not tell you that was probably the longest
- 8:52Speaker 1: ten thousand catches I've ever did in my life. Did
- 8:57Speaker 1: they even have to be footballs? Could it be a tennis?
- 9:00Speaker 1: Could it be any sort of ball? No, it was
- 9:03Speaker 1: it was only a football. Who was only doing footballs.
- 9:06Speaker 1: We would all use tennis balls to get our hand
- 9:08Speaker 1: eye coordination ready for practice. And you plan to continue
- 9:11Speaker 1: doing something similar, right, Yes, I do. I still I
- 9:14Speaker 1: still going to keep them two thousand on me. It
- 9:16Speaker 1: might not be ten thousand catches, but you know, those
- 9:19Speaker 1: would be my goals to get as high as I can,
- 9:20Speaker 1: you know, and keep my hands consistent. We're doing fun
- 9:23Speaker 1: facts with Jamar Chase. Your sophomore year. Joe Burrow wins
- 9:26Speaker 1: the Heisman, you win the bullet and the cough LSU
- 9:28Speaker 1: wins the National Championship, and the team goes to the
- 9:31Speaker 1: White House and President Trump only mentioned one player by name, you,
- 9:38Speaker 1: and he asked, and he asked you to speak to
- 9:39Speaker 1: the crowd describe that experience. I did not want to
- 9:44Speaker 1: go up there, actually, I actually told him no. I
- 9:47Speaker 1: was a little shy going up there in front of
- 9:49Speaker 1: the White House. And I've seen all those cameras in
- 9:51Speaker 1: the media in front of me, so I was a
- 9:52Speaker 1: little scooped. Um. You know, when I got up there,
- 9:55Speaker 1: my accent came out hard heart and I didn't really
- 9:57Speaker 1: know what to say, and I was just like, how
- 9:59Speaker 1: y'all doing this? So for the most part, it was
- 10:02Speaker 1: just a cool experience to have. Before the draft this year,
- 10:06Speaker 1: there was a debate among Bengals fans about whether the
- 10:09Speaker 1: team should take you or Oregon offensive lineman Pinay Sewell,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and there was kind of a joking civil war between
- 10:16Speaker 1: team Chase and team Sewell. Did you see or hear
- 10:21Speaker 1: about that? I think I've seen one of them, the
- 10:24Speaker 1: team A Team B I've definitely seen. I've seen that.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I've seen that yesterday actually, so after I got picked,
- 10:31Speaker 1: I've seen it again. I don't think anybody is complaining.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Even the people that the thought that Piney Seul would
- 10:37Speaker 1: have been a great pick are delighted that you are
- 10:39Speaker 1: going to be a Cincinnati Bengal. You are looking sharp
- 10:42Speaker 1: on draft night, white suit, orange pocket square sneakers with
- 10:47Speaker 1: the orange and black accents. If the possibility of being
- 10:51Speaker 1: taken by Cincinnati had anything to do with your look,
- 10:56Speaker 1: it's crazy because the shoes I had on was a
- 10:59Speaker 1: lasting shopping Um. It's just so happening to come with
- 11:02Speaker 1: that with that orange on the orange and black tip
- 11:04Speaker 1: on it, and uh and my pocket square is just
- 11:07Speaker 1: a last minute call too, So everything was a real
- 11:10Speaker 1: last minute. My shoes that I wanted to wear. It
- 11:12Speaker 1: didn't come in so um, I was fine with it,
- 11:14Speaker 1: you know. I like how I look and I went
- 11:16Speaker 1: with it. Are you into fashion in general and sneakers
- 11:20Speaker 1: in particular? I am actually um Today I have on
- 11:24Speaker 1: a Jelf jumpsuit from New Orleans and some bor so
- 11:28Speaker 1: I try to address established as I can't, comfortable as
- 11:31Speaker 1: I can. Are you excited that the NFL has changed
- 11:35Speaker 1: the rules and will now allow wide receivers to wear
- 11:39Speaker 1: single digit numbers? Of course I have a chance to
- 11:42Speaker 1: get back and one in the NFL. You know, keep
- 11:44Speaker 1: that confidence, keep my mind going right and finding my
- 11:48Speaker 1: passion again, you know, and taking off with this this community.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I think I think it'd be fun. Were you going
- 11:54Speaker 1: to wear seven had you played for LSU last year?
- 11:57Speaker 1: Were you going to switch to seven? Yes? Correct, I
- 12:00Speaker 1: was gonna wear seven at LSU my last year. Yes.
- 12:03Speaker 1: And that's like a number of honor at LSU. Is
- 12:07Speaker 1: that why you would have done that for the one year? Yes? Said,
- 12:10Speaker 1: that is a number of honor. That's a big number
- 12:13Speaker 1: of l shoe you know, a show suggition, pride and
- 12:15Speaker 1: just the love of the game. Um, I think me
- 12:17Speaker 1: wearing seven would have been a big help, you know,
- 12:19Speaker 1: for LSU and myself also, Um, I just want to
- 12:21Speaker 1: leave another legacy and another number at LSU and Draft night,
- 12:25Speaker 1: I asked you about the Bengals legacy of great wide
- 12:28Speaker 1: receivers including A. J. Green and Chad Johnson, and you said,
- 12:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna break every record they've got. That's a bold statement.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Do you admire athletes who can talk to talk and
- 12:40Speaker 1: then back it up? Of course? I mean if you
- 12:43Speaker 1: can talk it, that's the point of you having a mouth, right,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I mean, God gave you for a reasons, so we
- 12:48Speaker 1: need to use it. And I mean as long as
- 12:51Speaker 1: I prove it to myself, you know, that's that's all
- 12:53Speaker 1: I gotta do. You know, go out there that play
- 12:54Speaker 1: my game and let my let my play talk for myself.
- 12:58Speaker 1: You're off the hot seat. Appreciate at the time, look
- 13:00Speaker 1: forward to watching you play. Thanks for having me. Jamar
- 13:04Speaker 1: and his fellow rookies will be on the field at
- 13:07Speaker 1: Paul Brown Stadium on Friday morning for the Bengals rookie Minicamp.
- 13:11Speaker 1: We turned from a rookie to a ten year veteran.
- 13:14Speaker 1: It's been about two months since the Bengals signed Riley
- 13:17Speaker 1: Reef to be the right tackle this year. The former
- 13:20Speaker 1: first round draft pick by Detroit spent his first five
- 13:23Speaker 1: seasons with the Lions before spending the last four with
- 13:26Speaker 1: the Vikings. Now he's leaving the NFC North for the
- 13:31Speaker 1: AFC North. And I started our conversation by turning the
- 13:34Speaker 1: clock back to March and asking why he decided to
- 13:38Speaker 1: sign on the dotted line the night after going out
- 13:41Speaker 1: to dinner with offensive line coach Frank Pollock and other
- 13:44Speaker 1: teammates and coaches. You know, I came there and I
- 13:48Speaker 1: was real impressed with, you know, the core group of
- 13:51Speaker 1: guys that had a coach Taylor. He was awesome just
- 13:55Speaker 1: being with Frank and what they had envisioned. Bryan Callahan,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I'm excited to be here. When you signed with the Bengals,
- 14:04Speaker 1: you did a conference call with Cincinnati error reporters and
- 14:07Speaker 1: you were asked about Joe Burrow and you said, I
- 14:10Speaker 1: can't wait to block for this guy. Why did Joe
- 14:14Speaker 1: make such a strong impression on you? Just as love
- 14:17Speaker 1: for the game, I mean everything, He's constantly thinking about
- 14:19Speaker 1: football down to earth guy. You know, I've kind of
- 14:24Speaker 1: watched some of his film since I've signed there, and
- 14:26Speaker 1: I'm excited. I mean, I'm sure you guys are as well,
- 14:31Speaker 1: really looking forward to win a lot of games. In
- 14:34Speaker 1: addition to the ability that you bring to the offensive line, Riley,
- 14:37Speaker 1: you're a veteran, like I say, nine years of NFL
- 14:40Speaker 1: experience under your belt. This is largely a young group,
- 14:43Speaker 1: with guys like Jonah Williams on the left side. Now
- 14:46Speaker 1: Jackson Carmen's coming in as a second round draft pick.
- 14:49Speaker 1: How important is that? And who were some of the
- 14:52Speaker 1: veteran guys that helped you early in your career. Yeah,
- 14:55Speaker 1: when I first got to Detroit, I was still pretty raw.
- 14:58Speaker 1: There's guys like Jeff Backus, dam Raiola, Rob Simms, Stephen Peterman.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Guys are shareless. I mean, they're all old guys and
- 15:07Speaker 1: they helped me out tremendously and shape where I am today.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And you know, I'm excited. There's a lot of talent
- 15:14Speaker 1: in that old line room, a bunch of good guys,
- 15:16Speaker 1: and you know, I'm excited to join the group. Playing
- 15:20Speaker 1: offensive tackle in the NFL is hard in any division,
- 15:23Speaker 1: but I think it's especially hard in the AFC North.
- 15:26Speaker 1: When you face the Browns, you got to try to
- 15:28Speaker 1: block two guys who are the number one overall pick
- 15:30Speaker 1: in the NFL draft, Miles Garrett and Jadevi and Clowney
- 15:34Speaker 1: t J. Watton. Pittsburgh led the NFL in Zachs last
- 15:37Speaker 1: year with fifteen and then you've got the Ravens. You
- 15:39Speaker 1: don't know who you have to block because they blitz
- 15:41Speaker 1: more than any other team in the NFL. Was that
- 15:44Speaker 1: a consideration at all when you elected to come on
- 15:48Speaker 1: board with the Bengals. Yeah, I mean there's a lot
- 15:50Speaker 1: of things that you look at. You know, every week
- 15:54Speaker 1: in the NFL, you're going up against good guys. I
- 15:56Speaker 1: mean not saying those those guys are phenomenal pass rushers,
- 16:00Speaker 1: but uh, you know, it's it's always a challenge and
- 16:03Speaker 1: you got to bring your best every week. The Bengals
- 16:06Speaker 1: brought back an offensive line coach this year who's widely
- 16:09Speaker 1: regarded as one of the best in the National Football League,
- 16:11Speaker 1: Frank Pollock. What had you heard about Frank over the
- 16:14Speaker 1: years and how much interaction have you had. I've had
- 16:17Speaker 1: some real close friends play for Frank, and you know,
- 16:20Speaker 1: they endorsed him, and uh, you know, when I got
- 16:22Speaker 1: to meet him coming up to Cincinnati, I fell in
- 16:26Speaker 1: love with the way he approaches the game. Um, you know,
- 16:30Speaker 1: his attention to detail, and uh, you know, I'm excited
- 16:33Speaker 1: to play for him. The Bengals drafted three offensive linemen.
- 16:38Speaker 1: When you're a veteran and you're following the draft, are
- 16:40Speaker 1: you locked in on the guys they add at your
- 16:43Speaker 1: position or are you really looking at the whole group. Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 1: we're excited to get those guys in here, you know,
- 16:48Speaker 1: help our group out. Yeah. I kind of followed it closely,
- 16:53Speaker 1: and you know, um, the guys we brought in, they
- 16:56Speaker 1: all seem like good kids. So I'm excited to get
- 16:58Speaker 1: to work with him. As I mentioned, Riley, you spent
- 17:01Speaker 1: the last four years in Minnesota playing for a guy
- 17:03Speaker 1: who remains very popular around here from his years of
- 17:06Speaker 1: the Bengals, Mike Zimmer. Zim still has a hunting lodge
- 17:10Speaker 1: in northern Kentucky, I believe, so. I think he's in
- 17:12Speaker 1: this area quite a bit. What did Zim tell you
- 17:15Speaker 1: about Cincinnati and also about playing for the Bengals organization? ZIMU,
- 17:20Speaker 1: He's one of a kind, great guy. I love him. Um,
- 17:23Speaker 1: you know, I actually joked, I said, what's what's the passcode?
- 17:26Speaker 1: Tier Ranch? And you know, he was like you need
- 17:29Speaker 1: to go out there. You know, you know him, you
- 17:31Speaker 1: know he loved it here in Cincinnati. Obviously he's still close.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Uh Spence offseasons here, but uh no, I'm I'm excited
- 17:38Speaker 1: to be in the Midwest. What have been some of
- 17:41Speaker 1: the highlights of your career at this point, played in
- 17:44Speaker 1: some big games in Minnesota. It's really just a teammates,
- 17:48Speaker 1: the bonds that you create, um, you know, getting to
- 17:52Speaker 1: meet different people from different parts of the you know,
- 17:55Speaker 1: the countrary of the world, and uh, you know, it's
- 17:58Speaker 1: been a fun rode. This will be year ten, which
- 18:02Speaker 1: is a pretty extraordinary thing in the NFL. How proud
- 18:06Speaker 1: are you of lasting for a decade and hopefully several
- 18:09Speaker 1: years beyond this. I always said I wanted to play
- 18:12Speaker 1: eight years, you know, achieve that. Still feel good, still
- 18:15Speaker 1: have a lot of tank left, you know, I still
- 18:19Speaker 1: feel young. Let's just put it like that. And the
- 18:22Speaker 1: excited to get to Cincinnati and work with the guys,
- 18:25Speaker 1: meet some of them, you know, face to face. We're
- 18:27Speaker 1: on the zoom thing right now, like most of the
- 18:30Speaker 1: world is. But you know, it's nice. It'd be nice
- 18:33Speaker 1: to get in there and see the guys. You've been
- 18:36Speaker 1: very durable In your NFL career, You've played at least
- 18:38Speaker 1: thirteen games in all nine of your seasons. I think
- 18:41Speaker 1: you've played at least fifteen games and seven out of nine.
- 18:44Speaker 1: How have you stayed, you know, so durable and what
- 18:48Speaker 1: kind of things have you played through in order to
- 18:51Speaker 1: be able to answer the bell week after week? Yeah?
- 18:54Speaker 1: I mean as an offensive lineman, you take pride in,
- 18:57Speaker 1: you know, showing up every week and going out there
- 18:58Speaker 1: and playing. But you know that get puts a lot
- 19:01Speaker 1: of credit on our strength coaches, our training staff, just
- 19:04Speaker 1: those guys getting you ready in and out each week.
- 19:08Speaker 1: A lot was made of the dinner that you had
- 19:11Speaker 1: the night before you assigned your contract at the precinct.
- 19:14Speaker 1: What was the dinner of choice? Oh gosh, I think
- 19:18Speaker 1: I had the Columsworth. No, I had the columns Worth
- 19:22Speaker 1: on top of the rib I. Either way, I can't
- 19:24Speaker 1: remember what it was called. It was phenomenal. You know,
- 19:27Speaker 1: Ruby does a great job there and I had a
- 19:30Speaker 1: great time. I seem to recall at the time that
- 19:34Speaker 1: Jeff Ruby gave you a cigar at the end of
- 19:37Speaker 1: dinner and said that if you signed with the Bengals,
- 19:39Speaker 1: he would give you a box of cigars. Was that
- 19:42Speaker 1: the case? And has it happened yet? It hasn't happened yet.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I haven't been in Cincinnati since, you know, whether he
- 19:49Speaker 1: gives them to me or not, it's it's it's all right.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I'm not not too worried about it. I don't smoke
- 19:53Speaker 1: too many cigars anyways. But uh no, it's just a
- 19:55Speaker 1: pleasant meeting Jeff, and you know, I'll be back there.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Have you had much interaction with your new teammates yet,
- 20:04Speaker 1: you know, just on Zoom calls the offensive lineman. Um.
- 20:07Speaker 1: You know, we have a group chat going. A lot
- 20:10Speaker 1: of them reached out to me, you know, said welcome,
- 20:12Speaker 1: And I just want to get get in the building
- 20:15Speaker 1: and meet the guys. You know, I met most of
- 20:18Speaker 1: the coaches, so but I want to meet some of
- 20:20Speaker 1: the some of the guys and get to work. This
- 20:23Speaker 1: franchise boasts arguably the greatest person to ever play your position,
- 20:28Speaker 1: Anthony Munio's. Have you interacted with Anthony at all over
- 20:31Speaker 1: the years. No, I haven't. I've never met him. Uh.
- 20:34Speaker 1: You know, you hear a lot about him, just what
- 20:36Speaker 1: he's what he accomplished on the field, and the type
- 20:39Speaker 1: of person he is. Um. It's an honor to play, uh,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you know, to play for the Bengals. They've had a
- 20:44Speaker 1: lot of good guys and uh, you know, I'm just
- 20:47Speaker 1: excited to get there. When you reach the stage in
- 20:49Speaker 1: your career, you don't go to a new team unless
- 20:52Speaker 1: you feel like you've got a chance to win. What
- 20:54Speaker 1: about your interaction with the coaching staff and some of
- 20:57Speaker 1: your new teammates led you to believe that this is
- 21:00Speaker 1: a team on the rise. You know that just they're
- 21:02Speaker 1: they're you know, they're willed or they're hunger to win. Um,
- 21:07Speaker 1: you know, scheme, you know, it seems like they you know,
- 21:10Speaker 1: they got the right scheme, the right fit, they know
- 21:12Speaker 1: what they want. Um, but we got to put in
- 21:15Speaker 1: the work. I mean, that's all it comes down to.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Talks cheap this time of year. Um, get to work
- 21:22Speaker 1: and see where the you know, the chips fall. What
- 21:26Speaker 1: do you have plan between now and when you really
- 21:29Speaker 1: have to get after it in training camp? Anything fun? No?
- 21:32Speaker 1: Not really, just kind of hang out, workout. Um. I
- 21:37Speaker 1: own a ranch around here, so there's always something to
- 21:39Speaker 1: keep me busy, whether it's fence or trees or whatever.
- 21:42Speaker 1: So I stay busy. Maybe maybe get a little fishing
- 21:46Speaker 1: in the walleyes are biting around here right now, so
- 21:50Speaker 1: maybe I'll sneak out one day and get some in
- 21:53Speaker 1: Highly and Trey Waynes will face their former Minnesota Vikings
- 21:56Speaker 1: teammates in Week one. The Bengals Booth podcast is presented
- 22:01Speaker 1: by butt Light Seltzer. It's light and refreshing with a
- 22:04Speaker 1: hint of fruit flavor. Since the draft, I've been asked
- 22:08Speaker 1: a bunch of questions about the Bengals picks, including who
- 22:11Speaker 1: is your favorite under the radar selection. My choice is
- 22:16Speaker 1: fourth round pick Cam Sample, the defensive lineman out of Tulane.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Let's face it, Tulane does not get a ton of
- 22:23Speaker 1: respect in college football, but as the radio voice of
- 22:26Speaker 1: the UC Bearcats, I've seen how many outstanding players there
- 22:30Speaker 1: are in the American Athletic Conference and Sample led the
- 22:33Speaker 1: league with forty two quarterback pressures in eleven games last year.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Then he went to the Senior Bowl and earned the
- 22:41Speaker 1: top defensive Lineman award on his team. Last week on
- 22:45Speaker 1: this podcast, I was joined by the great Greg co
- 22:48Speaker 1: Sell from NFL Films and he sent me his scouting
- 22:51Speaker 1: report on Sample. Greg wrote that Cam has a relentless
- 22:55Speaker 1: and methodical explosiveness to his game, powerful and heavy hands
- 23:00Speaker 1: with constant leg drive. He added that Sample was a
- 23:03Speaker 1: fun player to watch with his high level competitiveness and
- 23:07Speaker 1: intensity and his relentless speed and velocity as a pass rusher.
- 23:12Speaker 1: For more on Cam Sample, I recently caught up with
- 23:15Speaker 1: his defensive line coach at Tulane, Byron Dawson, coach, what
- 23:20Speaker 1: are the Bengals getting in Cam Sample? Gonna get a
- 23:24Speaker 1: humbul relentless, art working, high character football player. He led
- 23:31Speaker 1: the American Athletic Conference in pressures last year. The Bengals
- 23:35Speaker 1: have struggled with their pass rush in recent seasons. How
- 23:38Speaker 1: do you think he projects as an NFL pass rusher?
- 23:42Speaker 1: You know, the biggest thing that I'll tell you about
- 23:44Speaker 1: Cam Sample is he's personal. So he's not just a
- 23:49Speaker 1: situational player. He's an all situational player. So he's a
- 23:54Speaker 1: guy that's going to heavy on first down, but he
- 23:57Speaker 1: also going to do a great job on third and law. So,
- 24:00Speaker 1: you know, just looking at the way he played, he
- 24:04Speaker 1: could play the one technique to shade, he can play
- 24:06Speaker 1: around the center area, he can move out to the three.
- 24:09Speaker 1: He can play a nine technique and rush from the edge.
- 24:13Speaker 1: And he can also drop into coverage. So I think
- 24:15Speaker 1: that versatility and that great effort that you're gonna get
- 24:19Speaker 1: down after down, and that's the reason why he was
- 24:22Speaker 1: able to lead our conference and pressures and do a
- 24:25Speaker 1: great job just for rest in the quarterback. He went
- 24:29Speaker 1: to the Senior Bowl and was named the top defensive
- 24:31Speaker 1: lineman on the American squad. What do you think that
- 24:35Speaker 1: said to NFL teams and scouts and evaluating Cam, Well,
- 24:40Speaker 1: it just showed that it translates to the best of
- 24:44Speaker 1: the best. Some people may have questioned, how does he
- 24:47Speaker 1: play versus Power five players that also played versus to
- 24:52Speaker 1: the best of the best, you know, the Senior Bowl,
- 24:54Speaker 1: that's the best of the best in college football. And
- 24:57Speaker 1: he was able to go out and used to the
- 25:00Speaker 1: same principle, used the same give things as smarts that
- 25:04Speaker 1: he used to have success in our conference, and he
- 25:08Speaker 1: had that same success versus those great players at the
- 25:11Speaker 1: Singing Bowl. So so we're really just proud of him
- 25:14Speaker 1: and and how he's represented to Lane University. What's caam
- 25:18Speaker 1: like as a teammate and as a leader, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 1: come early, stay late, high character young man. He comes
- 25:25Speaker 1: from a great family, great upbringing, very coachural. You know,
- 25:31Speaker 1: he listens and he's very detailed. He's a he's a
- 25:36Speaker 1: Fim Ratty's type of guy that have come in and
- 25:38Speaker 1: break down the opponent. And uh, like I say, he's
- 25:41Speaker 1: got great football savvy and plays with great football instinct.
- 25:46Speaker 1: He could really feel the blockers and respond to different
- 25:50Speaker 1: sects and project what type of play is going to
- 25:53Speaker 1: get free snapped. I can hear in your voice how
- 25:57Speaker 1: happy you are for him, and I get the sentence.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Not just because he's a two lane football player. Why
- 26:03Speaker 1: are you so excited for Cam? Sample because good things
- 26:07Speaker 1: need to happen to good people, and so whenever you
- 26:10Speaker 1: have somebody, they do things the right way. Come early,
- 26:13Speaker 1: stay late, gift sir, may I please? Just old school
- 26:19Speaker 1: values makes this great, very respectful. You know, he's the
- 26:26Speaker 1: type of guy that you want your daughter to marry.
- 26:29Speaker 1: So when those guys win, you know, we like to
- 26:31Speaker 1: think sometime a nice guys finis lad but in this case,
- 26:35Speaker 1: nice guys finish first. So I'm just excited about Cam's depple,
- 26:39Speaker 1: him going to the bank. The type of guy you
- 26:42Speaker 1: want your daughter to marry, I think is the highest
- 26:45Speaker 1: praise a person can give out exactly he deserves that
- 26:50Speaker 1: for sure. That's going to do it. For this episode
