- 2:07Speaker 4: let's get rolling. Our first experience comes to us from
- 2:10Speaker 4: Reddit user plutonium Horse, and we learned why you shouldn't
- 2:14Speaker 4: park on the side of the road to sleep. Performing
- 2:18Speaker 4: this experience is tom Aglio.
- 2:27Speaker 1: This took place around two years ago. I was driving
- 2:30Speaker 1: to work, a five hour drive. It was already dark.
- 2:32Speaker 1: About three hours of driving, I started to get tired.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I bought myself a coffee and some snacks at a
- 2:38Speaker 1: gas station and went on. But snacks and coffee can
- 2:40Speaker 1: only keep you awake for so long, and I started
- 2:43Speaker 1: to feel tired again. This part of the road was
- 2:45Speaker 1: nothing but thick, dark pinewood forest around me, no other
- 2:49Speaker 1: cars on the road, nothing only insects smashing my windshield
- 2:52Speaker 1: now and then and empty road. I was now extremely tired,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and at one point I nearly drove off the road
- 2:58Speaker 1: for almost falling asleep half to sleep. Now I can't
- 3:02Speaker 1: wait for a gas station. I need to sleep as
- 3:04Speaker 1: soon as I see a place where I can park
- 3:06Speaker 1: my car anything. When I'm tired, I fall asleep really fast.
- 3:10Speaker 1: If I'm tired enough, I can fall asleep in the
- 3:12Speaker 1: middle of a sentence when I'm talking. So it's a
- 3:15Speaker 1: bit urgent for me to find a place where I
- 3:16Speaker 1: can stop. It felt like an hour, but probably just
- 3:19Speaker 1: five minutes go by, and I spot this little pocket
- 3:21Speaker 1: in the road. It's like a parking space for quick
- 3:24Speaker 1: stops like peeing, switching drivers or stuff like that, not
- 3:27Speaker 1: even a real resting area. I stopped here, turned down
- 3:30Speaker 1: my windows to check if I heard any weird noises.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Total silence. I turned up the windows again. Nothing bad
- 3:36Speaker 1: is gonna happen. I haven't seen a car for like
- 3:38Speaker 1: thirty minutes. This road is empty. If someone is checking
- 3:42Speaker 1: out my car, I bet it's the cops checking on me.
- 3:44Speaker 1: If I'm all right, I leave my keys in the
- 3:46Speaker 1: ignition and I lock the doors just to be safe.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I adjust my seat a bit to make it more
- 3:51Speaker 1: comfortable to sleep in, and I take off my shoes
- 3:53Speaker 1: and put them on the passenger's seat on the right.
- 3:56Speaker 1: It's so nice to close my eyes and instantly I
- 3:58Speaker 1: fall asleep. I don't know why, but something wakes me up.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I can't really see anything. Some kind of bright light
- 4:04Speaker 1: hits me in the eyes. First I thought it was
- 4:06Speaker 1: a flashlight, but then I realized it's the high beams
- 4:08Speaker 1: from another car in my rear view mirror that is
- 4:11Speaker 1: blinding me. I look in my left mirror and I
- 4:13Speaker 1: see a dude walking up beside my car. Maybe he
- 4:16Speaker 1: wants help with something. Should I make it clear to
- 4:19Speaker 1: him that I'm in here. He's right beside my left
- 4:21Speaker 1: back door. Should I step out and ask what he's doing?
- 4:25Speaker 1: I didn't have to. The dude proceeds to jerk and
- 4:27Speaker 1: pull on my left back door. I almost shit my
- 4:30Speaker 1: fucking pants when I realize that he's trying to force
- 4:32Speaker 1: his way into my car. My seat is adjusted for
- 4:34Speaker 1: me to lay down, and I pushed it back max
- 4:37Speaker 1: I can't reach the pedals, which makes it impossible for
- 4:39Speaker 1: me to drive my car. I slammed the car horn
- 4:41Speaker 1: and it breaks the silence with a roar, and the
- 4:44Speaker 1: dude jumps. That gives me like two seconds to push
- 4:46Speaker 1: my seat to reach the pedals, but it's still way
- 4:49Speaker 1: out of adjustments. Someone kind of pulling myself to the
- 4:51Speaker 1: steering wheel because my seat is laying flat. It isn't
- 4:53Speaker 1: supporting my back anyway. I start my car and drive
- 4:57Speaker 1: off with a cloud of smoke for my screeching tires.
- 5:00Speaker 1: It's hard driving a car with nothing holding up your
- 5:02Speaker 1: upper body, but I managed. As I leave, I look
- 5:04Speaker 1: in the rear mirror and I can see how the
- 5:06Speaker 1: dude stands there and looks at me, and I can
- 5:08Speaker 1: see two more guys coming up beside him. What I
- 5:11Speaker 1: can see in the silhouette of their beams. One of
- 5:13Speaker 1: them has something in his hand, like a wrench or crowbar.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I drive super fast, way over the speed limit. My
- 5:19Speaker 1: whole body was trembling with adrenaline in fear. I drove
- 5:23Speaker 1: like that for like thirty minutes. Then I stopped at
- 5:25Speaker 1: a gas station to fix my seat and put my
- 5:27Speaker 1: shoes on again. I figured out I was only sleeping
- 5:29Speaker 1: for like ten minutes. Well, I didn't have to sleep
- 5:31Speaker 1: until I got to my destination, which is surrounded by
- 5:34Speaker 1: heavy duty fencing and the building has an alarm. I
- 5:37Speaker 1: told my boss the next day, and he said, they
- 5:39Speaker 1: actually have problems with what we call it in Sweden
- 5:42Speaker 1: road pirates, criminals that force you to stop on the
- 5:45Speaker 1: road and rob you of everything, including your car in
- 5:47Speaker 1: that specific area. It could just be three nice dudes
- 5:50Speaker 1: that wanted to check if I was okay. Then why
- 5:52Speaker 1: didn't they just knock in my driver's window? The thing
- 5:55Speaker 1: in his hands could be a big flashlight. Be safe.

- 6:20Speaker 4: username too Sad to Masturbate, and we learn that not
- 6:25Speaker 4: every uber driver can be trusted performing this experience is
- 6:29Speaker 4: Rhiannon Mauschell.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Sorry this is a bit long. I know this isn't
- 6:39Speaker 2: a therapist's office, but this has bothered me for a
- 6:41Speaker 2: long time and I wanted to just get it off
- 6:44Speaker 2: my chest. This happened June twenty eighteen in Portland, Oregon.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I understand I acted like an idiot in this situation.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Since then, I have become much more observant, cautious, and honestly,
- 6:57Speaker 2: much more paranoid. I went down with friends was really
- 7:01Speaker 2: drunk by midnight. Unfortunately, this was back when I had
- 7:04Speaker 2: little money and I realized you could save money by
- 7:07Speaker 2: eating very little before going out, and it would take
- 7:10Speaker 2: far fewer drinks to get drunk. So I was drunk.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I barely remember my friend ordering me an uber home.
- 7:18Speaker 2: My phone was dead. Of course, I can vaguely recall
- 7:21Speaker 2: them helping me into the car and telling me to
- 7:23Speaker 2: get home safe. I don't remember greeting the driver or
- 7:27Speaker 2: the first minute or so, but soon after getting in
- 7:30Speaker 2: he asked how my night was and if I smoked. Honestly,
- 7:33Speaker 2: I was just thinking about bed at this point, so
- 7:35Speaker 2: I sort of just slurred out that I did sometimes.
- 7:39Speaker 2: He then offered me a joint, and this is the
- 7:42Speaker 2: first moment I get sort of nervous and begin paying attention.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I tell him something like I'm really tired and just
- 7:49Speaker 2: ready to get home. I think he said something about
- 7:52Speaker 2: it being an Indika based joint and it made for
- 7:54Speaker 2: great sleep. Once again, I say something not exactly like no,
- 7:59Speaker 2: but not a yes, which he takes sys a yes,
- 8:01Speaker 2: I'll take that joint. Now. Reminder, I'm still drunk enough
- 8:05Speaker 2: I can barely see straight or speak clearly, so when
- 8:08Speaker 2: he says okay, well, I have to cancel the ride
- 8:11Speaker 2: really quick because I can't give it to you while
- 8:13Speaker 2: I'm on the clock, or something to that effect. It
- 8:16Speaker 2: takes me a second to realize how dangerous that is,
- 8:20Speaker 2: and by the time I start to say something, he
- 8:22Speaker 2: has canceled the ride and pulls over. We were in
- 8:26Speaker 2: an area just east of the Hawthorne Bridge, I think,
- 8:30Speaker 2: and it was totally secluded, some empty parking lots, a
- 8:33Speaker 2: closed autobody shop, no one in sight. It's starting to
- 8:38Speaker 2: hit me. I'm now in the car, not with an
- 8:40Speaker 2: uber driver, but with some stranger. I can't call anyone,
- 8:44Speaker 2: and he's trying to give me weed that could have
- 8:46Speaker 2: anything in it. For the next minute or so, we're
- 8:49Speaker 2: pretty quiet, or I just can't remember any small talk
- 8:52Speaker 2: he tried to make because I was beginning to panic,
- 8:55Speaker 2: and every time he handed me the joint, I would
- 8:57Speaker 2: fake hits, just breathing it into my mouth, not into
- 9:00Speaker 2: my lungs. I felt tired, clumsy, and weak, that kind
- 9:05Speaker 2: of drunk when you're almost at the point of nausea,
- 9:08Speaker 2: and I knew I couldn't do much more of anything
- 9:10Speaker 2: to defend myself at that point. I remember vividly being
- 9:13Speaker 2: fixated for a moment on the fact I didn't even
- 9:16Speaker 2: have a pair of keys to defend myself with, as
- 9:19Speaker 2: my building used fobs for just about everything, and I
- 9:21Speaker 2: didn't take my mail key with me. As I'm freaking out,
- 9:25Speaker 2: I look up to see this guy as sort of noticing,
- 9:28Speaker 2: and I make eye contact with him in the mirror.
- 9:31Speaker 2: He was staring at me, but I couldn't read his expression. Finally,
- 9:35Speaker 2: he says something along the lines of, well, let's get
- 9:38Speaker 2: out of here. I tell him I'll just call another
- 9:41Speaker 2: uber to get home, thinking at this point it might
- 9:43Speaker 2: even be safer to walk, and he says, no, I
- 9:46Speaker 2: still have your address. I'll just take you home. For
- 9:49Speaker 2: a moment, I was relieved. I guess I just wanted
- 9:52Speaker 2: to believe him so badly. I tried to calm myself down,
- 9:57Speaker 2: thinking he actually hadn't done anything threatening. Maybe he was
- 10:00Speaker 2: just your typical stoner guy and I'm overreacting. At this time,
- 10:05Speaker 2: I lived on PSU campus in downtown Portland, in the
- 10:08Speaker 2: southwest area of the city. He is driving me north
- 10:11Speaker 2: on the east side of the river. There are several
- 10:14Speaker 2: bridges to our left, and as he keeps moving north,
- 10:17Speaker 2: he has several opportunities to take an exit to hop
- 10:20Speaker 2: over the river and get me back downtown. He keeps
- 10:23Speaker 2: skipping them. We keep passing bridge after bridge that could
- 10:27Speaker 2: get me home. Up in northeast Portland, there are some
- 10:31Speaker 2: large industrial areas that can get very isolated at night,
- 10:36Speaker 2: and Portland in general is surrounded by lots of forests,
- 10:40Speaker 2: so I knew he could have me in a secluded
- 10:42Speaker 2: area real quick after he passes like the fourth exit
- 10:46Speaker 2: for a bridge. Pretty sure it was the Broadway Bridge.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I've been racking my brain for a way to make
- 10:51Speaker 2: him actually take me home and say something to the
- 10:54Speaker 2: effect of, hey, my boyfriend is waiting for me at home,
- 10:58Speaker 2: which was true, so I set it in a very
- 11:01Speaker 2: meek way. My driver says nothing, but he did take
- 11:05Speaker 2: the next exit for the bridge and basically hung a
- 11:08Speaker 2: giant U turn that started taking me home. Even as
- 11:11Speaker 2: we're on the west side of town heading south, I'm
- 11:14Speaker 2: still shaking and have my hand on the door handle,
- 11:17Speaker 2: thinking about just hopping out at a red light. The
- 11:19Speaker 2: closer we get to my apartment, my phone is completely dead,
- 11:23Speaker 2: and he honestly still has several chances to hop onto
- 11:25Speaker 2: nearby highways and speed out of the city. We're getting
- 11:29Speaker 2: pretty close to my apartment now, and I'm once again
- 11:32Speaker 2: trying to convince myself I'm being paranoid about some stoner
- 11:35Speaker 2: that can't navigate the city, even though a few minutes
- 11:39Speaker 2: before I was so scared I was crying. So once
- 11:42Speaker 2: we get about two blocks from my apartment, I lie
- 11:45Speaker 2: and tell him it's easiest to stop here and he
- 11:46Speaker 2: can let me out again. He doesn't say anything, but
- 11:50Speaker 2: does slow the car. I'm flooded with relief and even
- 11:54Speaker 2: feel myself smile. But when I go to open the door,
- 11:58Speaker 2: it's locked. I try to if the lock mechanism manually,
- 12:01Speaker 2: but it won't budge. I look at him instinctively to
- 12:04Speaker 2: see what's up, and he's got his head turned almost
- 12:08Speaker 2: fully toward me, shoulders still facing the road, smiling at
- 12:12Speaker 2: me the worst fucking smile I've ever seen. It looked
- 12:18Speaker 2: so mocking, and it just did not reach his eyes
- 12:21Speaker 2: at all. I just started crying and asking him to
- 12:24Speaker 2: open the door. I was so freaked out and still
- 12:27Speaker 2: very drunk, and thank god he did. I will never
- 12:31Speaker 2: forget the sensation of vulnerability, not just being drunk in
- 12:35Speaker 2: his car with no way to contact anyone, but even
- 12:38Speaker 2: as I got out of the car, I kept feeling
- 12:40Speaker 2: like he would somehow grab the back of my shirt
- 12:43Speaker 2: and pull me back in, as silly as that sounds.
- 12:48Speaker 2: When I got home, I found out my boyfriend had
- 12:50Speaker 2: actually gone out with friends last minute and wasn't even there.
- 12:54Speaker 2: He wouldn't have even known till much later if I'd
- 12:56Speaker 2: gotten back safe. The next day, I convinced my I
- 13:00Speaker 2: was freaking out over nothing, which I still realized could
- 13:04Speaker 2: be the case, But in my gut, I had truly
- 13:07Speaker 2: felt in danger the night before. Technically this guy could
- 13:11Speaker 2: have been totally harmless, but I still think I should
- 13:14Speaker 2: have texted my friend and how to report him. The
- 13:17Speaker 2: big thing that made me think of this was recently
- 13:19Speaker 2: hearing about how Ed Kemper, the ko Ed killer, would
- 13:22Speaker 2: go for practice runs, picking up hitchhikers and seeing if
- 13:26Speaker 2: he could get the passengers potential victims to trust him,
- 13:31Speaker 2: or how far out of their comfort zone he could
- 13:33Speaker 2: push them without them saying anything. Obviously, this guy wasn't
- 13:37Speaker 2: Ed Kemper, but I hate wondering if that night was
- 13:40Speaker 2: a practice run of sorts for my uber driver. Thanks
- 13:43Speaker 2: to whoever listens to this, I'm at a point in
- 13:46Speaker 2: my life where I'm realizing how much danger I put
- 13:49Speaker 2: myself in when I was younger, and just how depressed
- 13:52Speaker 2: as hell I was, And it has made me both
- 13:55Speaker 2: surprised and deeply grateful that I'm still.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Here in Wondery's generation Why podcast posts and true crime
- 14:09Speaker 4: fanatics Justin and Aaron explore hundreds of unsolved murders and
- 14:13Speaker 4: conspiracy theories. They dig through the evidence, give their perspective,
- 14:17Speaker 4: and ask the hard questions. And in one of their
- 14:19Speaker 4: latest episodes, Aaron and Justin profile a mysterious death from
- 14:23Speaker 4: two thousand and four. Alonzo Brooks was a young black
- 14:25Speaker 4: man who went to a party with some friends in
- 14:27Speaker 4: a rural area near their homes. But while his friends
- 14:30Speaker 4: left the party without him, Alonzo never returned home. A
- 14:34Speaker 4: month later, he was found dead with no obvious evidence
- 14:37Speaker 4: of foul play, and nearly two decades later, in July
- 14:41Speaker 4: twenty twenty, the FBI reclassified his manner of death as homicide.
- 14:45Speaker 4: There's even evidence that his death was a hate crime.
- 14:49Speaker 4: So what does the FBI know and how can they
- 14:51Speaker 4: solve this almost twenty year murder case?
- 14:54Speaker 5: Now?
- 14:54Speaker 4: The Alonzo Brooks episode is fantastic. It's an in depth
- 14:58Speaker 4: look at Alonzo's life, and what could have led to
- 15:00Speaker 4: him not leaving the party alive. If you love trying
- 15:03Speaker 4: to solve mysterious cases, this is the one for you.

- 15:19Speaker 4: Next, we hear from Reddit user ban Luiel and when
- 15:22Speaker 4: something just doesn't feel right, we learn why listening to
- 15:26Speaker 4: that little voice of reason can save your life. Performing
- 15:30Speaker 4: this experience is Matt Bradford.
- 15:37Speaker 6: So a little background here, and my father was in
- 15:41Speaker 6: the army for twenty one years, retired and moved to
- 15:43Speaker 6: a very small town in central Florida. Now, he got
- 15:47Speaker 6: bored after a couple of years, and even though we
- 15:49Speaker 6: didn't need the money between his retirement and what my
- 15:52Speaker 6: mom was making as a bookkeeper tax prep he wanted
- 15:55Speaker 6: to get back to work, so we started working at
- 15:58Speaker 6: various gas stations, and being a small town, the owners
- 16:01Speaker 6: wouldn't care if I came there and helped him out
- 16:03Speaker 6: with stalking the coolers or even running the register as
- 16:06Speaker 6: long as I didn't sell any beer or smokes. This
- 16:10Speaker 6: all took place in the eighties and early nineties. The
- 16:13Speaker 6: actual story I'm going to tell took place in nineteen ninety,
- 16:17Speaker 6: and I remember the date well because it was shortly
- 16:19Speaker 6: after my birthday and being fifteen in Florida. I had
- 16:23Speaker 6: just got my learners per May, and my dad would
- 16:25Speaker 6: let me drive him to and from work just to
- 16:27Speaker 6: get some experience on the road, both at day and
- 16:30Speaker 6: at night. I was sitting in my usual spot at
- 16:33Speaker 6: a table that was set up along the window, a
- 16:35Speaker 6: book in hand, feet propped up, and a mountain dew
- 16:38Speaker 6: on the table along with some snacks. I would generally
- 16:41Speaker 6: spend most of the evening that way, you know, reading books,
- 16:45Speaker 6: getting up to run the register is stock the cooler
- 16:47Speaker 6: at different times. I remember glancing up because something caught
- 16:51Speaker 6: my attention that was unusual, and I realized that a
- 16:55Speaker 6: lady was walking up our parking lot from the direction
- 16:57Speaker 6: of the Interstate. The gas station was right on I
- 17:00Speaker 6: seventy five. This sin itself was really strange because where
- 17:05Speaker 6: we were located you didn't get many people walking, and
- 17:08Speaker 6: definitely not walking from the direction of the Interstate. I
- 17:12Speaker 6: figured she had broken down somewhere and was coming to
- 17:14Speaker 6: use the phone to call for a tow truck or something.
- 17:17Speaker 6: I was completely wrong. She came into the store. I
- 17:21Speaker 6: looked around for a few minutes, and I remember getting
- 17:24Speaker 6: just a strange and creepy feeling about her. She walked
- 17:28Speaker 6: up to the counter and started telling my dad a
- 17:30Speaker 6: story about how she'd had gotten stranded and needed a
- 17:33Speaker 6: ride to.
- 17:33Speaker 5: The next big town up north from us O. Kala
- 17:36Speaker 5: was the town.
- 17:37Speaker 6: This is important, So my dad lets her know that
- 17:40Speaker 6: he's working and there's no way that he can take her.
- 17:43Speaker 5: So she turns and looks at me.
- 17:46Speaker 6: While she's looking away from him, my dad catches my
- 17:49Speaker 6: eye and subtly shakes his head no.
- 17:52Speaker 5: I was confused for a second.
- 17:54Speaker 6: Then she turns back to my dad and points at me,
- 17:57Speaker 6: asking if I can take her. My dad responds back that,
- 18:00Speaker 6: you know, I only had a learner's permit and I
- 18:02Speaker 6: wouldn't be able to drive her anywhere and then drive back. Normally,
- 18:07Speaker 6: I would have done it even though it was illegal,
- 18:09Speaker 6: because I'd done it a few.
- 18:10Speaker 5: Times before already.
- 18:12Speaker 6: I didn't argue with my dad, since this was completely
- 18:16Speaker 6: out of character for him. He was normally chatty with
- 18:18Speaker 6: the customers, but for whatever reason, he was almost curt
- 18:22Speaker 6: and dismissive of her. Turns out he had a bad
- 18:25Speaker 6: vibe about her from the minute he had seen her
- 18:27Speaker 6: walking up the drive well. She cusses him for a
- 18:30Speaker 6: minute and he basically tells her to get out of
- 18:32Speaker 6: the store. She slammed the door open. I thought the
- 18:35Speaker 6: glass was going to break from how hard she had
- 18:37Speaker 6: slammed it, and then she stalks out of the store
- 18:40Speaker 6: and down the driveway. I keep an eye on her
- 18:43Speaker 6: and continue to watch as she makes her way back
- 18:46Speaker 6: up to the interstate and then starts up the northbound
- 18:49Speaker 6: on ramp. Almost a year passes and I'm in my
- 18:53Speaker 6: bedroom less than a week before my sixteenth birthday. I
- 18:56Speaker 6: hear my dad yelling from the living room it was sudden,
- 18:58Speaker 6: get your ass in here and look at this. I
- 19:01Speaker 6: quickly run to the living room and see my dad
- 19:03Speaker 6: pointing at the TV and look at the mugshot of
- 19:05Speaker 6: the lady up on the screen and immediately remember the
- 19:08Speaker 6: lady who had been in the store. It turns out
- 19:12Speaker 6: I had almost given a car ride to Aileen Warnos,
- 19:15Speaker 6: who was later convicted of being a serial murderer and
- 19:18Speaker 6: then later.
- 19:19Speaker 5: Put to death. Still have nightmares about what could have happened.
- 19:36Speaker 4: So I've recently discovered a podcast I think you guys
- 19:38Speaker 4: are really gonna love. It's called The Secret Room with
- 19:41Speaker 4: Ben Hamm, and it's all about the secrets no one
- 19:44Speaker 4: ever tells. And each episode Ben has an intimate conversation
- 19:48Speaker 4: with someone new who tells their secret. I've been working
- 19:51Speaker 4: that way through all the episodes and I just can't stop.
- 19:54Speaker 7: Take a listen, what's the one thing you've never told anyone?
- 19:59Speaker 7: People just like you? Tell all in a podcast called
- 20:02Speaker 7: The Secret Room. If you're a true story fan and
- 20:05Speaker 7: you cannot get enough of people's most intimate dreams, desires,
- 20:10Speaker 7: and shame, you will love The Secret Room. Like Miela's
- 20:13Speaker 7: deathbed confession that her daughter's absent father is a movie star.
- 20:17Speaker 5: I wish I could tell someone who the father is
- 20:19Speaker 5: while I'm still on Earth.
- 20:20Speaker 7: Or Jen's secret love affair with a man on death row.
- 20:23Speaker 4: It's turned my.
- 20:24Speaker 2: World upside down and something he just has devastated me.
- 20:28Speaker 7: Or the way that Joey falls in love with inanimate objects.
- 20:31Speaker 4: I know people who were in relationships with construction equipment.
- 20:36Speaker 7: People all around you carry the most amazing secrets. You're
- 20:40Speaker 7: invited to the Secret Room for a front row seat

- 20:47Speaker 7: amaze you. I'm ben Ham, your host search for the
- 20:51Speaker 7: Secret Room, a podcast about the stories no one ever tells.
- 21:00Speaker 4: And finally we check in with Reddit user small Waifu
- 21:04Speaker 4: and we discover that following protocol can be a lifesaver.
- 21:08Speaker 4: Performing this experience is Nicole Dulin.
- 21:18Speaker 3: So this happened roughly about two years ago. I worked
- 21:22Speaker 3: at a hotel which had fifty rooms between three floors.
- 21:26Speaker 3: I was the only employee in the building after about
- 21:29Speaker 3: five pm. It should be noted I am a girl.
- 21:33Speaker 3: The hotel is on the farther side of the city,
- 21:36Speaker 3: but it's considered to be on the nicer side, so
- 21:40Speaker 3: a lot of companies will send their workers to us
- 21:42Speaker 3: for room and board instead of the shadier motels on
- 21:45Speaker 3: the opposite side of the city. Some of them are
- 21:48Speaker 3: great guests, others completely trashed everything, but that happens everywhere,
- 21:55Speaker 3: I suppose. The layout of the building was pretty simple.
- 21:59Speaker 3: You pull up to the front entrance and to the
- 22:02Speaker 3: foyer and the front desk lobby is right through a
- 22:05Speaker 3: set of automatic doors. Right across the hall from the
- 22:09Speaker 3: lobby was a staircase leading up to the second floor,
- 22:13Speaker 3: and to the left was our elevators to the second
- 22:15Speaker 3: and third floor. The first floor only has rooms on
- 22:18Speaker 3: one side to compensate for our pool, workout room and
- 22:23Speaker 3: breakfast area, dining room, lobby, and the office rooms all
- 22:27Speaker 3: being on the opposite side. The upper floors have rooms
- 22:30Speaker 3: on each side, with the third floor having the most rooms.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Typically the third floor the highest we kept only for
- 22:37Speaker 3: business and long stays. Second floor was reserved for short
- 22:41Speaker 3: stays or bigger parties, and the first floor we kept
- 22:45Speaker 3: open for elders who have wheelchairs or walkers, or people
- 22:49Speaker 3: who come in late at night for a one night's stay.
- 22:53Speaker 3: I promise this is relevant to the story. Anyway, it
- 22:58Speaker 3: was getting towards the last few hours of my shift.
- 23:01Speaker 3: It was slow that night, aside from a few work groups.
- 23:04Speaker 3: I had checked in a few hours earlier. I noticed
- 23:08Speaker 3: a raggedy, rusted and beat up black pickup truck pulling
- 23:11Speaker 3: up into the brightly lit carpet, so I got my
- 23:14Speaker 3: paperwork ready for check in. A guy gets out completely
- 23:19Speaker 3: covered in dirt. I figured he just got off of work,
- 23:23Speaker 3: as most guys come in covered in dirt or oil.
- 23:27Speaker 3: I do specifically remember that he reeked, which isn't too
- 23:30Speaker 3: out of the norm either entirely. I just chucked it
- 23:34Speaker 3: up to him being an oil field or construction worker.
- 23:39Speaker 3: I got his credentials his name was Michael, and scanned
- 23:43Speaker 3: it into the computer. He also was reluctant to leave
- 23:46Speaker 3: his vehicle information with me, but I explained if he didn't,
- 23:51Speaker 3: his vehicle was at risk of being towed by morning.
- 23:54Speaker 3: I thought he caved just because he was only going
- 23:56Speaker 3: to be here for the night. Michael requested a second
- 23:59Speaker 3: floor room close to the lobby staircase so he could
- 24:02Speaker 3: have easy access to the front doors for smoking. Not
- 24:05Speaker 3: out of the norm either. After taking his payment, I
- 24:08Speaker 3: set up his room keys. I explained parking policies and
- 24:14Speaker 3: explained how he can get to his room, which was
- 24:17Speaker 3: right up the staircase and the door was on the
- 24:20Speaker 3: opposite wall. He had a few bags with him and
- 24:23Speaker 3: he went upstairs. Almost immediately, he comes back down the
- 24:27Speaker 3: stairs and accuses me of giving him broken room keys.
- 24:31Speaker 3: I had to explain to him if he put them
- 24:33Speaker 3: next to his phone or anywhere near a magnet potentially
- 24:37Speaker 3: in his wallet, the keys will deactivate. I did offer
- 24:41Speaker 3: to take him upstairs and open the room for him
- 24:44Speaker 3: to make sure the new set of keys worked, and
- 24:46Speaker 3: they did. He walked into his room by himself shut
- 24:50Speaker 3: the door. So with that, I was on my way
- 24:53Speaker 3: back down to the lobby. When I got back in
- 24:56Speaker 3: the office, something odd caught my eye on the cameras.
- 25:00Speaker 3: He hadn't left the building, but his car wasn't in
- 25:03Speaker 3: the front anymore. He didn't mention anything about having another
- 25:06Speaker 3: person with him. If there was, we are supposed to
- 25:10Speaker 3: charge a ten dollar fee per extra person. The side
- 25:13Speaker 3: doors don't open unless you have a room key or
- 25:15Speaker 3: are on the inside of the hotel, so I started
- 25:19Speaker 3: to watch the cameras to make sure he wasn't trying
- 25:21Speaker 3: to sneak people in. About twenty minutes pass and I
- 25:25Speaker 3: noticed nothing happening except him coming down the stairs. I
- 25:29Speaker 3: smiled politely, and he goes outside. He stays outside for
- 25:34Speaker 3: about ten minutes, just standing in the car port. I
- 25:39Speaker 3: can see it on camera now. While I thought that
- 25:43Speaker 3: was a little weird, I just choked it up to
- 25:46Speaker 3: him taking a smoke. I stopped paying attention after a
- 25:49Speaker 3: while and started to file my paperwork that was due
- 25:52Speaker 3: before my shift ended. Michael ran back into the hotel
- 25:56Speaker 3: cigarette still in his mouth. I instructed him he take
- 26:00Speaker 3: his cigarette outside and put it out. I told him
- 26:03Speaker 3: prior we do not allow smoking inside the building. He
- 26:07Speaker 3: just threw it on the ground and put it out
- 26:09Speaker 3: with his shoe. He turned his attention towards the TV
- 26:12Speaker 3: and ended up sitting in the lobby for an ungodly
- 26:15Speaker 3: amount of time. He kept glancing towards the door, which
- 26:19Speaker 3: made me uncomfortable. During this time, the friendly demeanor he
- 26:24Speaker 3: had a check in completely disappeared. He seemed paranoid and agitated.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Now he would whisper to himself.
- 26:32Speaker 5: I couldn't hear what.
- 26:34Speaker 3: After about thirty minutes of him doing this, I instructed
- 26:37Speaker 3: him to go back up to his room because I
- 26:39Speaker 3: cannot have people in the lobby when I am working
- 26:42Speaker 3: on closing procedures. It was a lie, but ownership allows
- 26:46Speaker 3: us to make up reasons if we are uncomfortable with
- 26:48Speaker 3: a guest's presence. Michael asked me to take him up
- 26:51Speaker 3: to his room because he is uncomfortable and scared. I
- 26:55Speaker 3: explained that I am unable to do that for safety reasons.
- 26:59Speaker 3: What I could do was watch him go up the
- 27:01Speaker 3: stairs on camera and he could call down to the
- 27:05Speaker 3: office on his room phone. When he arrived into his room,
- 27:09Speaker 3: I was just trying to be friendly and get him
- 27:11Speaker 3: upstairs as quick as I could. He goes upstairs, but
- 27:16Speaker 3: immediately comes back down and informs me that he forgot
- 27:21Speaker 3: where his room was and I would need to show him.
- 27:25Speaker 3: I told him I can't leave the office or lobby,
- 27:28Speaker 3: but I can explain it to him where his room was,
- 27:31Speaker 3: because it was super simple. He was continuing his whispers,
- 27:36Speaker 3: this time it was about him losing his phone. I
- 27:40Speaker 3: didn't pay any mind to it. After explaining to Michael
- 27:43Speaker 3: where his room was, he went back upstairs and I
- 27:46Speaker 3: heard the door slam shut. It echoed throughout the second
- 27:50Speaker 3: and first floors, and it gave me chills for some reason.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Almost immediately he comes back down and starts yelling at me,
- 28:00Speaker 3: telling me I stole his cell phone, that I'm planning
- 28:03Speaker 3: his demise and I need to find his phone. This
- 28:07Speaker 3: was completely bogus, as I haven't left the office since
- 28:10Speaker 3: making sure his room key worked. He asked me for help,
- 28:14Speaker 3: and I just wanted him to go away, so I
- 28:17Speaker 3: slipped a screwdriver in my pocket just in case he
- 28:20Speaker 3: tried to attack me, and I began rummaging through the
- 28:23Speaker 3: lobby couches looking for his phone. I didn't find it,
- 28:27Speaker 3: but I did find his credit card, which he also
- 28:30Speaker 3: began accusing me of stealing. I stood my ground and said,
- 28:35Speaker 3: if he can't respect me in my place of work,
- 28:38Speaker 3: I can call the police and request they escort him
- 28:40Speaker 3: into his room or off the facility. He got angrier,
- 28:45Speaker 3: snatched his card from my hands, and went back outside.
- 28:48Speaker 3: After about twenty minutes, he comes back inside. He is calmer,
- 28:53Speaker 3: but he asks if I would please go outside with
- 28:56Speaker 3: him because there is something wrong with his car. After
- 28:59Speaker 3: I absolutely refuse, he tells me that I need to
- 29:03Speaker 3: go outside, that it's not fair. He's the only person
- 29:07Speaker 3: out there working on his car and he just needs
- 29:10Speaker 3: some fucking help. I had to explain I am not
- 29:14Speaker 3: allowed to accompany a guest outside of the building. He
- 29:17Speaker 3: just starts repeating that I absolutely have to go outside
- 29:21Speaker 3: with him. Now. I have anxiety and I tend to
- 29:26Speaker 3: let my mind roam over wide horizons, and this was
- 29:30Speaker 3: no different. I was about to have a panic attack,
- 29:34Speaker 3: so I called the owners and asked them what I
- 29:36Speaker 3: should do. Here was my first hotel job, and although
- 29:39Speaker 3: I have tons of freedom doing my job. I still
- 29:42Speaker 3: want to know how to properly handle these situations. The
- 29:46Speaker 3: owner told me, if I am uncomfortable and suspect he
- 29:48Speaker 3: is under the influence or a danger to myself or himself,
- 29:53Speaker 3: I have full rain to call the police have them
- 29:56Speaker 3: ban him from the property. I asked if they could
- 30:00Speaker 3: just keep an eye on the cameras they have access
- 30:02Speaker 3: to at home because he is acting weird. I locked
- 30:06Speaker 3: all the lobby doors and made sure the side and
- 30:09Speaker 3: fire exits were all properly secured and closed so no
- 30:13Speaker 3: one could sneak in. I did this while doing this
- 30:16Speaker 3: on the phone with my boss because I was scared
- 30:19Speaker 3: to leave the office by myself. After getting back behind
- 30:22Speaker 3: the office, I locked the door and I just braced
- 30:26Speaker 3: for him to come back inside. My boss tells me
- 30:29Speaker 3: to just watch the cameras and keep my cell phone
- 30:32Speaker 3: nearby just in case I have to call for help. Meanwhile,
- 30:36Speaker 3: I noticed on the cameras I couldn't see Michael anymore.
- 30:41Speaker 3: I didn't know where he parked, but I damn sure
- 30:43Speaker 3: wasn't going to go looking. But what I did notice
- 30:47Speaker 3: is there was another vehicle driving through our parking lot.
- 30:50Speaker 3: I called the hotel next door to ask if the
- 30:52Speaker 3: car was on their cameras too, and I was informed
- 30:56Speaker 3: it was an unknown vehicle to their records. It was
- 30:59Speaker 3: unknown to mine as well. This just shot my anxiety
- 31:02Speaker 3: up even higher. The car would drive around the back
- 31:06Speaker 3: of the building to the front, but avoid the car
- 31:09Speaker 3: port turn, and then do the same to the building
- 31:12Speaker 3: next door. The parking lot was almost empty, so I
- 31:16Speaker 3: know they weren't looking for a parking spot. The car
- 31:19Speaker 3: keeps going and I'm watching it on the camera so
- 31:23Speaker 3: focused that I didn't notice Michael come back inside. Telling
- 31:26Speaker 3: Michael he either needs to go up to his room
- 31:29Speaker 3: or vacate the premises, he just continues to yell at me,
- 31:33Speaker 3: saying I need to go outside with him. He won't
- 31:36Speaker 3: move out from in front of the entrance. I imagine he
- 31:40Speaker 3: was staying within view of whoever else he kept looking
- 31:42Speaker 3: back at. Then randomly I see him sprint across the
- 31:47Speaker 3: parking lot and out of the camera view. I also
- 31:50Speaker 3: didn't see the car anymore after that. Since it was
- 31:53Speaker 3: practically the end of my shift, I somehow managed to
- 31:56Speaker 3: get everything done just in time for the next shift
- 31:59Speaker 3: to arrive. I was so glad to see her I
- 32:02Speaker 3: almost cried. I explained to her what happened and that
- 32:06Speaker 3: the owners want her to keep the lobby doors locked.
- 32:09Speaker 3: We put up signs explaining our doors were broken and
- 32:13Speaker 3: due to safety reasons, guests would have to call for
- 32:15Speaker 3: entry or use the side entrances for their room. I
- 32:19Speaker 3: also deactivated Michael's room keys and told the next shift
- 32:22Speaker 3: girl not to let him back if he shows up,
- 32:25Speaker 3: to call the police because he is a security risk.
- 32:29Speaker 3: I made sure she watched me get into my Uber
- 32:31Speaker 3: ride after triple checking the vehicle and driver matched what
- 32:35Speaker 3: my phone said. Since I was a regular customer of
- 32:38Speaker 3: the driver, he asked why I was so riled up.
- 32:42Speaker 3: I asked him to drive through the parking lot with
- 32:44Speaker 3: his doors closed so I could see if Michael's truck
- 32:47Speaker 3: or the other vehicle I saw driving across the parking
- 32:50Speaker 3: lot were anywhere near the buildings, and they weren't. I
- 32:54Speaker 3: have no idea what happened to them. I had my
- 32:58Speaker 3: boyfriend come stay the entire EVA shift with me just
- 33:01Speaker 3: in case he came back, because I was told by
- 33:04Speaker 3: my bosses that he never came to get his stuff.
- 33:07Speaker 3: He wouldn't pick up the phone for calls either. Nothing
- 33:10Speaker 3: happened that night or any other night except for a
- 33:14Speaker 3: month later. Michael came in asking about his stuff and
- 33:18Speaker 3: if he could get a room. I refused his room,
- 33:22Speaker 3: and luckily other people were with me in the lobby
- 33:24Speaker 3: and in the office. I had our maintenance man go
- 33:28Speaker 3: retrieve his items and explained he is no longer allowed
- 33:30Speaker 3: on the property. If we saw him, the police would
- 33:34Speaker 3: be called and he would be arrested for trespassing. Again
- 33:38Speaker 3: this wasn't true, but we didn't want him coming back
- 33:41Speaker 3: at all. I noticed Michael had a different vehicle this time.
- 33:45Speaker 3: It was a newer model SUV and it was maroon.
- 33:50Speaker 3: It matched neither his beat up black pickup truck or
- 33:53Speaker 3: the dark colored sedan I saw driving in circles. If
- 33:56Speaker 3: there was anything that sat with me even after all
- 33:59Speaker 3: this time, it was that he remembered my name. He
- 34:03Speaker 3: addressed me by my name when he walked up to
- 34:05Speaker 3: the counter, and at first I thought, oh, yeah, my
- 34:09Speaker 3: name is part of my uniform, until I realized I
- 34:12Speaker 3: forgot to put on my name tag that day. After that,
- 34:16Speaker 3: I refused to wear one in the hotel. Management let
- 34:19Speaker 3: me create a fake name and wear that. From that
- 34:21Speaker 3: point on. It took me a while to feel safe
- 34:24Speaker 3: in the building again. While I was alone, I constantly
- 34:28Speaker 3: had my boyfriend with me while I worked the evening shift.
- 34:31Speaker 3: There is a chance the guy and the circling vehicle
- 34:34Speaker 3: are unrelated. But my anxiety and the aura I got
- 34:38Speaker 3: from Michael that night it didn't feel good or right.
- 34:42Speaker 3: So Michael, let's not meet ever again.
