Latest / Foul Territory / Ken Rosenthal’s Inside Scoop: Weekend Chaos + Scariest Oct. lineups
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Let's hit the inside scoop and let's talk absolutely insane
- 0:09Speaker 1: postseason picture with FT senior insider Ken Rosenthal. I'm going
- 0:13Speaker 1: to bring this question right to you, Ken, Todd father
- 0:16Speaker 1: brought it up. Do you like the way that the
- 0:18Speaker 1: American League is lined up right now where all of
- 0:20Speaker 1: the divisional battles are going to happen early in the
- 0:23Speaker 1: postseason or do you think that there should be some
- 0:25Speaker 1: type of levers in place to try and prevent that
- 0:27Speaker 1: which can happen. I mean, MLB can do that if
- 0:30Speaker 1: they wanted to and say, hey, you got to play
- 0:32Speaker 1: a non division or whatever.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I'm not really that fervent one way or the other
- 0:39Speaker 2: on this topic.
- 0:39Speaker 3: I understand what Todd and Eric are saying in that
- 0:42Speaker 3: you don't want to see the Yankees and Red Sox
- 0:44Speaker 3: in the first round in the best two of three.
- 0:46Speaker 3: It's not ideal, but at the same time, that's the
- 0:50Speaker 3: way the playoff system is set up. I don't mind it.
- 0:53Speaker 3: I understand again that the argument would be save those
- 0:57Speaker 3: matchups for later and then the division series. The way
- 0:59Speaker 3: it lines up right now, you'd also see a divisional matchup,
- 1:03Speaker 3: but with the schedule more balanced now not totally balanced,
- 1:07Speaker 3: but more balanced than it used to be.
- 1:09Speaker 2: This is okay with me?
- 1:11Speaker 4: Can you? And we also had this conversation, I feel
- 1:14Speaker 4: like the Astros are gonna bump one of these top
- 1:17Speaker 4: two teams out, and I don't think. I don't see
- 1:18Speaker 4: the Astros losing. Do you see the Astros getting in?
- 1:21Speaker 4: And maybe the Tigers are maybe even the Red Sox
- 1:24Speaker 4: after all the fight they've been through or out of
- 1:26Speaker 4: the playoffs.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Todd for me or anyone else to predict anything at
- 1:30Speaker 3: this point would be sheer folly.
- 1:33Speaker 2: We've all spent the season.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Trying to figure this thing out, and we've been all
- 1:37Speaker 3: wrong every step of the way. Two weeks ago, you
- 1:40Speaker 3: would not have foreseen where we are right now.
- 1:42Speaker 2: There's no way.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Now you're asking me which teams I think are in
- 1:45Speaker 3: the best position. Cleveland and Detroit are in better positions
- 1:48Speaker 3: than Houston simply because of the way the math shakes out,
- 1:51Speaker 3: Houston not having the tiebreakers and being a game back
- 1:55Speaker 3: of the Tigers. But that said, while Houston is not
- 1:59Speaker 3: playing well, and while Jeremy Panna seemingly is out the
- 2:02Speaker 3: rest of the way and without Alvarez. In addition to that,
- 2:07Speaker 3: if they sweep the Angels. If they somehow find the
- 2:09Speaker 3: gumption to sweep the Angels, then maybe there's a way
- 2:12Speaker 3: in for them, depending on what happens with Detroit and Boston.
- 2:15Speaker 3: But it's going to be pretty difficult, it seems to me.
- 2:19Speaker 5: Do you see any indication that the trend of home
- 2:24Speaker 5: or teams winning at home during a regular season continuing
- 2:28Speaker 5: into the playoffs. Obviously that's a crapshoot, but is there
- 2:33Speaker 5: anything that's leading to that, like the drastic change this
- 2:37Speaker 5: year and teams winning at home, and then because the
- 2:41Speaker 5: other year in the World Series, I think every road
- 2:43Speaker 5: team won every game for all game, all seven games.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Eric, I haven't looked at it that closely, but if
- 2:50Speaker 3: I recall correctly the last time I looked at it,
- 2:53Speaker 3: that home field advantage in the best two of three
- 2:56Speaker 3: is not as meaningful as you might think it's meaningful.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Of course, you would rather play at home, and if
- 3:01Speaker 3: you're let's say San Diego or Seattle, which of course
- 3:06Speaker 3: is not going to have to play in that round
- 3:08Speaker 3: one of these teams that plays really well at home,
- 3:11Speaker 3: Philly is another one, then yeah, you'd rather have that.
- 3:14Speaker 3: But I remember Texas going into Baltimore a couple of
- 3:17Speaker 3: years ago and sweeping them without home field advantage. It
- 3:23Speaker 3: just doesn't seem to be that big a deal. That
- 3:25Speaker 3: was the Division Series I'm referring to, But there have
- 3:27Speaker 3: been other cases too where the home field has not
- 3:29Speaker 3: always won in this best of three round. And really,
- 3:33Speaker 3: what matters to me most, or which should matter most,
- 3:36Speaker 3: it would seem based on the way this game has
- 3:38Speaker 3: been played forever is the starting pitching and how it
- 3:41Speaker 3: lines up, And that too is something that will be
- 3:43Speaker 3: determined this weekend. If Detroit, for instance, does not clinch
- 3:48Speaker 3: by Sunday, they've got to throw Schoob then.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Don't want to do that.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I'd rather save them for the Game one of the
- 3:53Speaker 3: Wildcard series if they get there. Same for Cleveland with
- 3:57Speaker 3: Gavin Williams. And there are some other possibilities like that
- 4:00Speaker 3: and play as well.
- 4:02Speaker 5: How about health? How about work here, because we talked
- 4:05Speaker 5: about Todd and I talked about it going in here,
- 4:07Speaker 5: you have those days off the teams that aren't getting
- 4:10Speaker 5: the buye that they usually do get the buy The Dodgers,
- 4:14Speaker 5: the Yankees are they at a disadvantage based on where
- 4:20Speaker 5: their team is healthy wise, because the Dodgers are spent
- 4:23Speaker 5: the whole season trying to get healthy. Now they are healthy,
- 4:26Speaker 5: and they still don't like some of the guys that
- 4:28Speaker 5: they have in their bullpen who aren't hurt.
- 4:33Speaker 3: I don't know that it's affecting those teams as much.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Certainly the Red Sox are one example. If Roman Anthony
- 4:40Speaker 3: isn't decapable of playing in the playoffs, and we don't
- 4:42Speaker 3: even know where he is in that recovery from the oblique,
- 4:45Speaker 3: but if you could get the buye in their situation,
- 4:48Speaker 3: it would be helpful. It's going to be helpful for
- 4:50Speaker 3: the Phillies with Trey Turner. It would be helpful for
- 4:53Speaker 3: the Blue Jays with Bob Boushett still on the men.
- 4:56Speaker 3: So there are individual circumstances where certainly the buye is
- 5:00Speaker 3: helpful with regard to health, and Giancarlo Stanton was quoted
- 5:04Speaker 3: last night as saying, it's always helpful because there are
- 5:07Speaker 3: guys who are banged up that we don't really know
- 5:09Speaker 3: about or we don't know the extent of how they
- 5:12Speaker 3: are banged up. And it's also helpful for bullpen arms
- 5:15Speaker 3: that need a little bit of a break, which is
- 5:17Speaker 3: pretty much to say every bullpen ar I'm going right
- 5:20Speaker 3: now so it's definitely viewed by teams as an advantage.
- 5:24Speaker 3: At the same time, we have seen over the years,
- 5:27Speaker 3: especially in twenty three, when you sow two Wildcors make
- 5:29Speaker 3: it to the World Series, that momentum you build in
- 5:33Speaker 3: the playoffs can carry you through. And there's not really
- 5:36Speaker 3: a correlation between late season success in the regular season and.
- 5:41Speaker 2: The playoffs, but there is.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Once you win that first series, you start getting it rolling,
- 5:46Speaker 3: like the Rangers and the Diamondbacks did, and maybe then
- 5:49Speaker 3: you have something.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Crats. Let's talk about Omaha steaks, and it's not just steaks,
- 5:55Speaker 1: it's chick and winnings, it's smash burgers, big deli style franks.
- 6:00Speaker 1: There are a number of categories that you can hit
- 6:03Speaker 1: all in one place. They've been doing it for a
- 6:05Speaker 1: long time. They're the best of the biz. And if
- 6:06Speaker 1: you got a good full a life's good, man.
- 6:09Speaker 5: But you gotta finish every meal with some delectable desserts too.
- 6:13Speaker 5: They have those too to go along with these delicious steaks.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Apple caramel tarts on the list, among many
- 6:20Speaker 1: other menu items to check out. Be the hero that
- 6:24Speaker 1: orders Omaha steaks and is the most popular person in
- 6:28Speaker 1: your household. So get fired up for fall grilling with

- 6:52Speaker 4: I want to ask this question about Cayl Rowley. I
- 6:55Speaker 4: mean you may be hinted on this a little while ago,
- 6:57Speaker 4: but are we not talking enough about him getting to
- 7:01Speaker 4: maybe sixty two home runs and tying the record? Have
- 7:04Speaker 4: we not gotten into that as much? I mean, I
- 7:07Speaker 4: feel like I've you know, you see it, but it's like,
- 7:09Speaker 4: all right, whatever, Like I don't know, I feel like
- 7:11Speaker 4: it's not being touted up enough.
- 7:14Speaker 2: It's funny Todd.
- 7:15Speaker 3: A few days ago, I started thinking, we're not talking
- 7:18Speaker 3: about Judge enough and what he's doing. And you might say,
- 7:21Speaker 3: how can that beak? And he plays in New York.
- 7:23Speaker 3: But because of Raleigh getting to sixty, which is an
- 7:27Speaker 3: incredible accomplishment, there has been in my view, at least
- 7:31Speaker 3: from what I've read and seen a lot of attention
- 7:34Speaker 3: on him and a lot of people coming out and saying,
- 7:36Speaker 3: how can this guy not be the MVP when he's
- 7:38Speaker 3: a switch hitter with the most home runs by a
- 7:41Speaker 3: switch hitter ever, When he's a catcher with the most
- 7:43Speaker 3: home runs by a catcher ever, when he's doing all
- 7:46Speaker 3: the things he's doing behind the plate. What I feel
- 7:50Speaker 3: has gotten lost somewhat, and I know people might take
- 7:52Speaker 3: exception to this is the historic nature of Judges season
- 7:56Speaker 3: as well. And Jason Stark, who I believe you're going
- 7:59Speaker 3: to have on later in the show, he'll point this
- 8:01Speaker 3: out and he'll explain it better than I can, because
- 8:03Speaker 3: he wrote it in his column today. We are witnessing
- 8:06Speaker 3: yet another all time great season by a right handed
- 8:11Speaker 3: hitter in Aaron Judge. And while there's nothing as dramatic
- 8:16Speaker 3: as Raleigh's sixty home runs, and it's certainly not being
- 8:19Speaker 3: done by a catcher, it's being done by a right fielder.
- 8:22Speaker 3: His advantages in average on base slugging are so distinct
- 8:27Speaker 3: and so unique that that's something too. So we're gonna
- 8:32Speaker 3: be talking a lot about both these guys as the
- 8:34Speaker 3: season ends, and if Raleigh gets the sixty two, that's
- 8:36Speaker 3: another data point. I guess I've said all along there
- 8:41Speaker 3: is no wrong choice for MVP, and I just don't
- 8:44Speaker 3: know which way this is going to go. It's such
- 8:46Speaker 3: an interesting race because in many ways, guys, this is
- 8:49Speaker 3: apples and oranges, and that's what makes it so difficult
- 8:52Speaker 3: to judge and evaluate, and it's also what makes it
- 8:55Speaker 3: so interesting and fun to talk about.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Ken. Let's cover your latest article, Fifteen MLP teams that
- 9:04Speaker 1: could change their manager head of baseball operations this offseason.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Last I checked, that is half of the league. So
- 9:10Speaker 1: there are some more obvious ones on there, but I'll
- 9:13Speaker 1: give you dealer's choice on the one that you wrote
- 9:15Speaker 1: about where you said, wow, this would stand out to me.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Where's one that people should be like, WHOA, I didn't
- 9:21Speaker 1: even think about that.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I would say pretty much all of these have been
- 9:28Speaker 3: thought about.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Now. There are fifteen teams in there.
- 9:31Speaker 3: I included the Mets and Tigers and their managers just
- 9:34Speaker 3: because their teams have collapsed in an historic way.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I don't believe either.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Aj Hinch or Carlos Mendoza is going to get fired
- 9:41Speaker 3: or should get fired. The one thing that jumped out
- 9:45Speaker 3: at me in compiling this story was really the Pirates situation.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And Ben Sherrington, I learned and reported, is signed through
- 9:53Speaker 3: twenty twenty seven. He is their general manager. He's been
- 9:57Speaker 3: their general manager for six years. They've had a losing
- 9:59Speaker 3: record every year. A couple things that are interesting here.
- 10:03Speaker 3: The last time owner Bob Nutting cleaned house, Neil Huntington
- 10:06Speaker 3: had three years left his GM, Clint Hurdle had two
- 10:09Speaker 3: years left as manager. He wound up eating more than
- 10:12Speaker 3: ten million dollars. So the fact that Sherrington is signed
- 10:15Speaker 3: for two more years won't necessarily preclude Nutting from firing him,
- 10:19Speaker 3: if that is what he chooses to do. But the
- 10:22Speaker 3: other interesting part about Sherrington is they've got some pieces
- 10:26Speaker 3: in place, and its schemes, of course, but all that
- 10:30Speaker 3: young pitching surrounding him. It's Connor Griffin, the game's number
- 10:33Speaker 3: one top prospect coming up probably as soon as next year.
- 10:37Speaker 3: He's a shortstop. They're clearly imbalanced, too much pitching, note
- 10:41Speaker 3: enough hitting, and that needs to be addressed. So will
- 10:45Speaker 3: Nutting addressed this? I don't know, And it's an interesting
- 10:48Speaker 3: question that he faces here. I know a lot of
- 10:50Speaker 3: people in Pittsburgh want to see change, understandably so, and
- 10:54Speaker 3: a lot of people in Pittsburgh believe the biggest change
- 10:56Speaker 3: needs to come all the way up top with nutting.
- 10:59Speaker 3: But this's one situation that is particularly interesting. I'll give
- 11:03Speaker 3: you something else to Scott that in again, researching this article,
- 11:07Speaker 3: did jump out at me the fact that teams like
- 11:10Speaker 3: Colorado and Anaheim, which might seem obvious teams that are
- 11:15Speaker 3: headed for change, they might go for short term solutions
- 11:19Speaker 3: or no solutions at all because of the concern of
- 11:22Speaker 3: a lockout coming in twenty seven. Why commit long term
- 11:25Speaker 3: and we don't even know what's going to happen in
- 11:27Speaker 3: twenty seven. That might seem self defeating in many ways.
- 11:31Speaker 2: You got to fix your team, right.
- 11:33Speaker 3: But owners think differently than you and I often, and
- 11:37Speaker 3: they might be thinking along those lines. Like Colorado if
- 11:40Speaker 3: they were going to fire their GM, and they still
- 11:42Speaker 3: might probably should have done it already and started their search,
- 11:46Speaker 3: much like Washington did. But maybe their owner Dick Montfort's thinking,
- 11:50Speaker 3: you know what, I'll stick with Bill Schmidt for one
- 11:52Speaker 3: more year, Warren Schaeffer for one more year, and then
- 11:55Speaker 3: once twenty seven.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Is resolved, I'll figure it out. I don't know that
- 11:58Speaker 2: his fans will be happy with that.
- 12:00Speaker 3: I don't know that the industry would look well upon that,
- 12:02Speaker 3: but that is one scenario that was presented to me.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Which of these positions is most coveted by somebody, say,
- 12:12Speaker 5: like a David Ross, somebody who's not going to just
- 12:15Speaker 5: take any managerial job, like I have to be a
- 12:17Speaker 5: manager and get your foot in the door. Which of
- 12:20Speaker 5: these positions is that, like, hey, you know what, I
- 12:23Speaker 5: kind of see a light at the end of the tunnel.
- 12:26Speaker 2: I'll give you three. Atlanta is the most obvious.
- 12:29Speaker 3: If Brian Stiker retires, and as I wrote, that is
- 12:32Speaker 3: not a sure thing, he might decide, you know what,
- 12:35Speaker 3: we're going to be pretty good next year. I want
- 12:37Speaker 3: to one more shot at making this thing go. Texas
- 12:42Speaker 3: if Bruce Boci retires would be another intriguing possibility, though
- 12:45Speaker 3: they're going to reduce payroll.
- 12:47Speaker 2: After what happened this year.
- 12:49Speaker 3: And then there's Baltimore, and Baltimore is a team that
- 12:53Speaker 3: clearly needs more out of their young position players, a
- 12:56Speaker 3: lot of whom are stagnated or regressed this year. Really
- 13:00Speaker 3: needs to find an ace for the top of its
- 13:02Speaker 3: rotation and also needs to rebuild its entire bullpen. But
- 13:06Speaker 3: when you have that young core position players, you have
- 13:09Speaker 3: the potential to do what they did what in twenty
- 13:12Speaker 3: three and twenty four when they made the playoffs. So
- 13:15Speaker 3: I would say those three are the most appealing. Washington, Colorado,
- 13:19Speaker 3: Anaheim if it opens not as much.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Hey Ken, I know in the beginning of the article
- 13:27Speaker 1: you mentioned Tory Lavello. How much can things change in
- 13:32Speaker 1: that form? And I know you also prefaced it by saying, Hey, Ken, Kendrick. Definitely,
- 13:36Speaker 1: I would say one of the more competitor appearing owners
- 13:39Speaker 1: in the sport, So he might do something crazy. But
- 13:42Speaker 1: in this case Arizona selling away what half of their
- 13:46Speaker 1: team and still being in it with a few days
- 13:49Speaker 1: left Ago has to tell you that the manager still
- 13:53Speaker 1: very much has his players in focus and liking what
- 13:56Speaker 1: he's bringing to the table right.
- 13:58Speaker 3: No question, and he's not on the list. I used
- 14:01Speaker 3: him as an example of how things can change so
- 14:04Speaker 3: quickly for managers and teams in general. I remember in
- 14:08Speaker 3: late May the Diamondbacks were struggling. They went through like
- 14:11Speaker 3: a one to nine stretch, and remember they had signed
- 14:14Speaker 3: Corbyn Burns, they had put in some effort into winning
- 14:17Speaker 3: this season, and I was thinking to myself, my Tory
- 14:20Speaker 3: Lavello be in trouble, and I made some calls and
- 14:23Speaker 3: turns out he wasn't. And then just a couple of
- 14:25Speaker 3: weeks ago, Buster only a ESPN had him on his
- 14:28Speaker 3: own list of managers who could be in trouble and
- 14:32Speaker 3: not because he necessarily believed it, and he said, it
- 14:34Speaker 3: almost seems silly to include him on this list, but
- 14:37Speaker 3: he mentioned that Ken Kendrick, the owner, is a really
- 14:40Speaker 3: competitive guy. Now let's look at the Diamondbacks whole picture.
- 14:44Speaker 3: What has happened here. They lost Burns and two of
- 14:47Speaker 3: their top believers, Justin Martinez and Ajpuck to season ending injuries.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Then they lost lords Gurrel Junior to a season ending
- 14:54Speaker 3: injury as well. In August, they traded I don't need
- 14:58Speaker 3: to go through the whole list, but three of them
- 15:00Speaker 3: were Merril Kelly, Ajohanno Suarez and Josh Naylor. And yet
- 15:04Speaker 3: as we enter the final weekend, they are still in contention.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Now that's partly.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Because they have three great position players, Carol Perdomo and Marte,
- 15:14Speaker 3: but it's also because Tory Leavello has figured some things
- 15:17Speaker 3: out with them kept them going and all of that,
- 15:19Speaker 3: And I mentioned two other examples of how things can
- 15:22Speaker 3: change quickly.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Dave Roberts last year's Division Series.
- 15:26Speaker 3: They lose that to San Diego, get knocked out for
- 15:29Speaker 3: a third straight year by a division rival in the
- 15:31Speaker 3: first round.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I would think he was getting fired.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Turns out he gets an extension for winning the World Series,
- 15:38Speaker 3: highest average salary by a manager ever. And then Mike
- 15:41Speaker 3: Shilt a few years ago with Saint Louis. You remember
- 15:43Speaker 3: the seventeen yame winning streak, the third straight playoff appearance,
- 15:46Speaker 3: he gets into a fight with John Mazzelock, not a fistfight,
- 15:50Speaker 3: but a philosophical difference kind of fight, and he's gone.
- 15:54Speaker 3: So I made this list in the article fully aware
- 15:58Speaker 3: that something might happen this postseason, or something might happen
- 16:02Speaker 3: behind closed doors that changes everything for a particular manager
- 16:06Speaker 3: in a particular situation.
- 16:08Speaker 2: We'll see how it all plays out.
- 16:11Speaker 5: But the expectation isn't there isn't there an expectation for
- 16:16Speaker 5: some clubs over other clubs, Like, oh, it's neat that
- 16:19Speaker 5: the Guardians are making the playoffs, voter's not in there.
- 16:22Speaker 5: The expectation of an Aaron Boone because once all the
- 16:25Speaker 5: crappy teams stop playing, it's all the good teams. And
- 16:28Speaker 5: if you're the first one out. Are there any managers
- 16:31Speaker 5: because I don't think there's any general managers I can
- 16:33Speaker 5: think of, but any managers that could lose their job
- 16:37Speaker 5: if this postseason doesn't go well.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Well, I mentioned too, and Aaron Moon certainly would be
- 16:42Speaker 3: one if indeed they get knocked out early, and I'm
- 16:45Speaker 3: not even sure, then he would get fired. He's so
- 16:48Speaker 3: close with Brian Cashman, the GM, so well thought of
- 16:51Speaker 3: by their owner house Steinbrenner. I know fans have wanted
- 16:54Speaker 3: him fired, as I wrote in the article six hundred
- 16:56Speaker 3: and twenty seven times already, but it hasn't happened.
- 16:59Speaker 2: In it would take a lot for it to happen.
- 17:02Speaker 3: I would think it would take a first round exit
- 17:05Speaker 3: or an early exit with them playing poorly for even
- 17:08Speaker 3: it to become an issue. And then Rob Thompson in
- 17:10Speaker 3: the Philadelphia Phillies, they go to the World Series in
- 17:13Speaker 3: twenty two, they lose in seven games in the NLCS,
- 17:17Speaker 3: their final two at home to the Arizona Diamondbacks in
- 17:19Speaker 3: twenty three, and then they lose in the Division Series
- 17:22Speaker 3: to the Mets. Last year, They've gone backwards each year
- 17:25Speaker 3: they added it. The deadline had maybe one of the
- 17:28Speaker 3: best deadlines with Duran and Bader and signing David Robertson
- 17:32Speaker 3: as a free agent, and now they have a team that,
- 17:35Speaker 3: even without Zach Wheeler, looks like a World Series type team.
- 17:40Speaker 3: If they get knocked out in the first round, will
- 17:42Speaker 3: the question be raised. I'm sure it will be raised.
- 17:45Speaker 3: I don't know that it will lead to change. In
- 17:48Speaker 3: my view, Rob Thompson is the perfect manager for that team,
- 17:51Speaker 3: but Dave Dombrowski, President Baseball Operations, could decide. And I'm
- 17:56Speaker 3: just speaking hypothetically. You know what, we haven't gotten there
- 17:59Speaker 3: with dis manager. Let's try another one. I don't know
- 18:02Speaker 3: who it would be. I don't know what logic there
- 18:05Speaker 3: would be behind that, but these are the kinds of
- 18:08Speaker 3: things where at least the questions would be raised. I'm
- 18:10Speaker 3: not sure that they would lead to anything, but yes,
- 18:14Speaker 3: there would be noise that makes sense.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I mean, if you look at Philly last year was
- 18:18Speaker 1: certainly disappointing in the playoffs, and people thought they were
- 18:21Speaker 1: going to drastically switch things up. They didn't. They made
- 18:24Speaker 1: a few additions, but they're like, let's roll this out
- 18:26Speaker 1: one more time. If it doesn't work again, I think
- 18:28Speaker 1: you're definitely going to see some more drastic changes roster wise,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and yeah maybe coaching wise. So good call Ken fifteen
- 18:35Speaker 1: teams on there. So I'm encouraging everyone to check it out.
- 18:37Speaker 1: We only got to several of them, so check out
- 18:39Speaker 1: the article. Can enjoy the weekend covering Cleveland right this weekend.

- 20:05Speaker 1: it at the end of the segment. Best Lineups. What
- 20:09Speaker 1: are the scariest lineups in Major League Baseball heading into
- 20:12Speaker 1: the postseason? Who wants to start?
- 20:17Speaker 5: I'll go Yankees.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Okay, that was easy.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Wow, you stole Todd's pick.
- 20:23Speaker 4: No no, but it was just easy answer for sure.
- 20:26Speaker 5: I really, I really think they've gotten a lot of
- 20:28Speaker 5: flack and a lot of issues when you break down
- 20:31Speaker 5: the numbers that, in my opinion play in the postseason.
- 20:35Speaker 5: And I'm not saying I'm picking the Yankees. I'm saying
- 20:38Speaker 5: the Yankees lineup. Those numbers play I heard somebody talking
- 20:42Speaker 5: about it before. Like balls that are put in play
- 20:45Speaker 5: at ninety plus miles an hour, are you know, have
- 20:48Speaker 5: like a two to eighty average. Ninety five plus is
- 20:52Speaker 5: like three ten. One hundred plus is like four eighty,
- 20:55Speaker 5: and anything over one oh five is like a five
- 20:58Speaker 5: eighty clip something rediculous like that. The Yankees hit the
- 21:02Speaker 5: baseball hard. Do they strike out? Absolutely? Do they kick
- 21:06Speaker 5: the ball around? Sure, That's not what I'm talking about.
- 21:10Speaker 5: That is a lineup to me that is feared because
- 21:14Speaker 5: they have a lot of balance. They have a left
- 21:16Speaker 5: right combination that hits the ball harder than any lineup consistently.
- 21:22Speaker 5: One to nine.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Yeah, and I'll back that up with eight guys with
- 21:26Speaker 4: twenty plus home runs. I mean, that is absolutely phenomenal.
- 21:31Speaker 4: I'm gonna go with your squad, the Phillies. I think
- 21:33Speaker 4: the Phillies lineup is incredible, especially if they get this
- 21:36Speaker 4: guy Sosa they hit hitting three home runs in a game,
- 21:38Speaker 4: He's back mashing the ball, Swore or Harper. I mean,
- 21:43Speaker 4: I love everything about this Phillies lineup. They've been there before.
- 21:47Speaker 4: And where they play is pretty incredible too. So I
- 21:51Speaker 4: wouldn't mind a Yankee Philly ending to this beautiful major
- 21:57Speaker 4: league season for sure.
- 21:58Speaker 1: If not the Yankee, what else do you like on
- 22:01Speaker 1: the American League side? Name another lineup where you're like,
- 22:05Speaker 1: that's scary lineup? Yes, I think there's I don't think.
- 22:12Speaker 5: I mean, I guess you're gonna have to go to
- 22:14Speaker 5: Boston for me, go to Boston.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Who in Toronto? You guys aren't scared of Toronto?
- 22:24Speaker 2: Scary?
- 22:25Speaker 5: You said scary? I think Toronto's a better I think
- 22:28Speaker 5: they I think they produce more runs. Clearly, I think
- 22:31Speaker 5: they actually do produce more runs. It's not like even opinion,
- 22:34Speaker 5: I think they've scored more runs. I just think Toronto
- 22:37Speaker 5: scores it in a different way that I still have
- 22:40Speaker 5: a few days until I get to pick my playoff predictions.
- 22:44Speaker 5: If I have to decide, is the Blue Jays lineup
- 22:48Speaker 5: is the Brewers lineup? Two lineups that are going to
- 22:51Speaker 5: play in the postseason? Is it going to be based
- 22:55Speaker 5: on matchups? Do the Blue Jays get that buy Who
- 22:58Speaker 5: do they draw in the first round? Do they draw
- 23:01Speaker 5: a pitching staff that's just going for strikeouts? If they
- 23:04Speaker 5: do to me. I think the Blue Jays lineup has
- 23:06Speaker 5: the advantage if they draw a lineup, if they draw
- 23:09Speaker 5: a pitching staff that executes pitches and isn't necessarily big
- 23:13Speaker 5: punch out team. I think maybe the Blue Jays have
- 23:16Speaker 5: a little bit of a disadvantage. So that's why I
- 23:18Speaker 5: don't pick them over it. I think there's just more
- 23:24Speaker 5: I think there's more punch that there could be in
- 23:27Speaker 5: the Red Sox lineup.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Okay, that's interesting. I mean their neck and neck in
- 23:32Speaker 1: terms of run score this year, I would still give
- 23:34Speaker 1: the advantage to the J's and the Red Sox definitely
- 23:36Speaker 1: have more of a hitters park, So if you're going
- 23:38Speaker 1: to look at some of the other park adjusted stats,
- 23:41Speaker 1: the Jays probably have the advantage. But yeah, what do
- 23:43Speaker 1: you think, Todd Father? You see both of those teams
- 23:46Speaker 1: pretty frequently scarier offense. If you're a team facing the
- 23:50Speaker 1: Blue Jays or the Red Sox, where do you feel
- 23:53Speaker 1: like there's a little more intimidation?
- 23:56Speaker 3: Man?
- 23:56Speaker 4: I don't know, I really don't know. I think read
- 24:00Speaker 4: the Blue Jays have had their number this year. I
- 24:03Speaker 4: mean they definitely have five and eight.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Uh you're saying against the Yanks.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Yeah, against the Yanks. I'm not I'm not sure. I
- 24:12Speaker 4: you know, I just honestly, I honestly think the Mariners
- 24:16Speaker 4: are probably the only other team that can stack up
- 24:19Speaker 4: against them in the playoffs. Right now, I don't and
- 24:22Speaker 4: you know, they've been hitting pretty well. Their pitching staff
- 24:24Speaker 4: is pretty good. I you know, I think it's the
- 24:27Speaker 4: Yankees to win the AL. In my opinion, I think
- 24:30Speaker 4: the AL is for the Yankees to win. I don't
- 24:33Speaker 4: care what happened in the regular season. They have the
- 24:35Speaker 4: line up loaded, even with all the injuries they have.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Luis heel Is back, you know, Max Freed, Carlos Rodin.
- 24:44Speaker 4: It's Theirs to lose.
- 24:47Speaker 1: It is crazy when you just look at run scored
- 24:50Speaker 1: and again, I know some ballparks are not as easy
- 24:53Speaker 1: to score. In the first eleven on runs scored are
- 24:58Speaker 1: all either play teams are in the mix. I mean,
- 25:01Speaker 1: the only team that you could single out really would
- 25:04Speaker 1: be the Diamondbacks. They have the fourth most run scored
- 25:07Speaker 1: as of today, and they're on the outside looking in,
- 25:10Speaker 1: but barely. Everyone else is a playoff team. Yankees, Dodgers, Brewers,
- 25:13Speaker 1: that's your top three, then the Diamondbacks and it's Red Sox,
- 25:16Speaker 1: Blue Jays, Phillies, Cubs, Mariners, Mets, Tigers. They're all playoff teams.
- 25:21Speaker 1: You know, for a while we'd always look at run prevention.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Run scored is the bigger indicator for this year. I mean,
- 25:27Speaker 1: if you can score runs, you're going to be a
- 25:29Speaker 1: playoff team.
- 25:30Speaker 5: M Yeah, I get it. I mean, but I bet
- 25:36Speaker 5: the pitching staffs are all right up there too. You're
- 25:38Speaker 5: not going to have a twenty fifth ranked pitching staff
- 25:41Speaker 5: and oh your lineup. So I mean if I think
- 25:43Speaker 5: if you did the same breakdown for the pitching staffs, nope,
- 25:47Speaker 5: I think.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Wrong, wrong, Okay, And again there are deeper stats, So
- 25:52Speaker 1: I'm just doing what is now looked at as the basics.
- 25:55Speaker 1: But if we just look at tm ERA, number one
- 25:58Speaker 1: in baseball is the Rangers. Then you have the Brewers,
- 26:00Speaker 1: but the Rangers aren't in there, they're very much out.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Then you have Brewers, Padres, Guardians, Red Sox. Then number
- 26:07Speaker 1: six is Kansas City, Number seven Pittsburgh. Then you're at
- 26:11Speaker 1: the Phillies, the Cubs, the Mariners. Then you've got the Rays.
- 26:14Speaker 1: So it's a little more balanced. In that top eleven.
- 26:17Speaker 1: You've got almost half the teams in there that are
- 26:19Speaker 1: very much not postseason teams. Just a little thing that
- 26:22Speaker 1: I noticed.
- 26:25Speaker 5: It's a little got a score differential.
- 26:30Speaker 1: One more on the National League side, I just want
- 26:33Speaker 1: to spend another minute there. In terms of run scored,
- 26:37Speaker 1: the Dodgers are first, the Brewers are second, then, like
- 26:40Speaker 1: I mentioned, the Diamondbacks. Then you've got the Cubs, Mariners,
- 26:44Speaker 1: and Mets. I asked this to Jim Bowden Yestra, I
- 26:48Speaker 1: ass this to you because you're you're fresh with us today,
- 26:50Speaker 1: Todd Father. If the Mets do make it in, don't
- 26:53Speaker 1: you think that their offense is pretty damn good. I mean,
- 26:55Speaker 1: they're pitching is somewhat in shambles, especially starting pitching wise.
- 27:00Speaker 1: But yeah, that's a good looking lineup. Like I think
- 27:03Speaker 1: they're gonna give the Dodgers trouble in the best out
- 27:05Speaker 1: of three series if they meet up with them, because
- 27:07Speaker 1: I think the lineup can keep up with l A.
- 27:10Speaker 4: I do too. I do too. I would agree with
- 27:13Speaker 4: you on that. I don't know why that slipped my
- 27:14Speaker 4: mind a little bit, but they they have a stack
- 27:18Speaker 4: lineup and when they're clicking, I mean, they just went
- 27:20Speaker 4: into Chicago and found a way to win games that
- 27:23Speaker 4: they needed. I know, they lost a big game, but
- 27:26Speaker 4: they took two out of three, and you know, the
- 27:29Speaker 4: only thing that's gonna hinder them is the pitching, and
- 27:32Speaker 4: we all know that. But I mean, they have a
- 27:36Speaker 4: squad that can mash too. I mean, Pete Alonzo, what
- 27:39Speaker 4: a year he had. I mean, honestly, good for him
- 27:42Speaker 4: coming off of the you know, the Bowl that they
- 27:44Speaker 4: were giving him. Not trying to pay the man exactly
- 27:47Speaker 4: what he deserves, and you know he has he has
- 27:49Speaker 4: something to think about in the offseason. But they do
- 27:51Speaker 4: have a team that can go into LA and win
- 27:54Speaker 4: three out of five games three what excuse me? Excuse me?
- 28:00Speaker 4: Two out of three my fault, Yeah, and go out
- 28:03Speaker 4: there and all of a sudden, Bye bye LA. They
- 28:06Speaker 4: definitely could.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Sodo Star, Lindora Star and clutch. Pete had plenty of
- 28:11Speaker 1: clutch moments for them. Neimo very solid, above average offensive performer,
- 28:17Speaker 1: clutch moments, hitting left on left homers. Baby, there's some
- 28:20Speaker 1: life there.
- 28:21Speaker 5: Marte's playing well, Bientos is rolling in the form, He's
- 28:24Speaker 5: starting to hit the ball out of the park opposite field,
- 28:27Speaker 5: and you know what he did in the playoffs last year.
- 28:29Speaker 5: That lineup is awesome. But there is no bigger team
- 28:32Speaker 5: that is more counterbalanced in the playoffs right now, maybe
- 28:37Speaker 5: the Guardians pitching staff and their lineup would be. Their
- 28:43Speaker 5: pitching staff is so awesome and their lineup is poop
- 28:46Speaker 5: soup right now. The match are the other way. Their
- 28:49Speaker 5: lineup is that could be really devastating and their pitching
- 28:54Speaker 5: staff is poop soup.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Yep, we just saw it, I mean against the Cubs,
- 29:01Speaker 1: So let us know your thoughts. Most scary lineups and
