- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Tamika D.
- 0:00Speaker 2: Mallory and it'shit Boy, my Son it generally.
- 0:03Speaker 1: We are your host of TMI.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Tamika and my Son's Information, Truth, Motivation and Inspiration.
- 0:09Speaker 1: New name, New Energy.
- 0:11Speaker 3: But how you doing, Tamika D.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mallory, I'm doing good. I had some coffee.
- 0:20Speaker 2: You look like Blad just that because literally that was
- 0:23Speaker 2: Blaird Mold right now.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I have my coffee today.
- 0:26Speaker 4: And coffee, I'm telling you I used to when I
- 0:29Speaker 4: used to work in National Action Network with Reverend Sharpness Organization.
- 0:33Speaker 4: You know, I was there for fourteen years and at
- 0:35Speaker 4: some point I discovered coffee because we like, you know,
- 0:38Speaker 4: they had coffee. You have to go make coffee. You
- 0:40Speaker 4: have coffee in the morning, and so I started being like, oh,
- 0:43Speaker 4: I could drink coffee.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I did not know at that time that I had anxiety.
- 0:48Speaker 4: You know, this is something that I discovered the name
- 0:51Speaker 4: of it now because remember they didn't call stuff anxiety nothing.
- 0:55Speaker 4: They just said you was crazy or bugged out or
- 0:57Speaker 4: couldn't sit still, your fission too much, you know, stupid
- 1:00Speaker 4: stuff is what they did. They Yeah, add I don't know, no,
- 1:05Speaker 4: no such thing as add add is a new term.
- 1:07Speaker 3: It was.
- 1:11Speaker 4: No no, there was no diagnosis except dumb or or what
- 1:17Speaker 4: other things? They said, you was stupid, you had behavioral issues,
- 1:22Speaker 4: you were bad, you was you were what is it like?
- 1:25Speaker 1: Crazy?
- 1:26Speaker 4: Like they literally it made you think that something was
- 1:29Speaker 4: wrong with you because nobody knew how to identify the
- 1:33Speaker 4: property and technology.
- 1:34Speaker 1: For these things. Nobody knew ADHD.
- 1:36Speaker 4: That is a diagnosis that we now have understand that
- 1:40Speaker 4: you can actually get treated for it, either through like
- 1:43Speaker 4: psychotherapy or whatever. So anxiety, anxiety, you we learned that
- 1:50Speaker 4: last year that there's a thing called anxiety that does
- 1:53Speaker 4: not mean you're having a moment, right. Anxiety can actually
- 1:59Speaker 4: be a condition that you experienced regularly that needs to
- 2:05Speaker 4: be regulated exactly. So I didn't know I had anxiety,
- 2:11Speaker 4: but drinking, you know, I started drinking coffee and something
- 2:15Speaker 4: would happen to me to where I was like on ten,
- 2:20Speaker 4: like nervous and just just doing the like starting to
- 2:26Speaker 4: go around the office saying crazy things and yelling and
- 2:30Speaker 4: yelling and just.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Just doing too much. And then people would be like,
- 2:34Speaker 1: what is wrong with you?
- 2:35Speaker 4: But what was happening is that the caffeine was triggering
- 2:40Speaker 4: my anxiety. Because I would almost always end up being
- 2:43Speaker 4: really emotionally destroyed at the end of the spike.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And it's like so they would say, please don't drink coffee.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Please don't come in here to a meeting after you
- 2:53Speaker 4: had some coffee talking about and what did you do?
- 2:54Speaker 4: And did you do this and this, because we need
- 2:56Speaker 4: to do this and I gotta do this and I'm
- 2:57Speaker 4: telling you and then don't do anything. And that is
- 3:00Speaker 4: that to this day, I use coffee when I absolutely
- 3:05Speaker 4: need it, but it's not for me. Energy drinks, coffee,
- 3:08Speaker 4: any of that stuff that like, you know those drinks
- 3:11Speaker 4: that they say if you take this powder and the.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Thing, it gives you energy and all, no, no, no, I can't.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I can't have it. It's not for me.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Okay, that's that's good to know.
- 3:20Speaker 1: So I'm high as ship right now.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Okay, well, hopefully you low down a little bit because
- 3:28Speaker 2: it's a little crazy right now, you know, all you
- 3:31Speaker 2: bogeling and all that. But anyway, that's what when you
- 3:34Speaker 2: do the bogel.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It was the wine.
- 3:39Speaker 2: To me. It's the little two guns like this bogl Yeah. See,
- 3:46Speaker 2: you learned something every day. So we're going to have
- 3:48Speaker 2: a special episode which we're not gonna do a lot
- 3:50Speaker 2: of intro with me. Get did a good intro about
- 3:52Speaker 2: coffee and her anxiety and as she did the Bogel.
- 3:56Speaker 2: But we're gonna skip right to our interview. We have
- 3:59Speaker 2: a very special guests today, and we want to spend
- 4:01Speaker 2: most of our time interviewing our guests and really getting
- 4:05Speaker 2: a deep down into this individual and tell them who
- 4:07Speaker 2: we're interview.
- 4:08Speaker 4: We are interviewing Lauren le Rossa from the Breakfast Club.
- 4:12Speaker 4: This is a young sister that I think both of
- 4:14Speaker 4: us we really admire her and celebrate her success. But
- 4:19Speaker 4: I knew right and I think we are about to learn,
- 4:24Speaker 4: and I'm sure you knew as well that she didn't
- 4:25Speaker 4: just start.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Overnight, that there is an actual journey.
- 4:29Speaker 4: And I love the fact that we get to be
- 4:33Speaker 4: at this sort of not the beginning stage of her
- 4:36Speaker 4: newfound success, because she's already you know, into it and
- 4:40Speaker 4: well known and well respected. But there's so much more
- 4:44Speaker 4: coming for her, and I love that we'll be able
- 4:47Speaker 4: to interview her at different phases of her life and
- 4:50Speaker 4: watch her grow to whatever it is she's going to
- 4:53Speaker 4: tell us that she wants to be. So I'm excited
- 4:55Speaker 4: to talk to Laura LaRosa today. You really worked on
- 4:57Speaker 4: getting this interview.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Then, yeah, you know, it's a few people that you
- 5:00Speaker 2: see growing. Like you said, we've been a part of
- 5:03Speaker 2: the process, just seeing her grow and just watching her
- 5:06Speaker 2: emerge and be professional. Yeah, you know what I'm saying,
- 5:10Speaker 2: not just a trend or just doing something to get
- 5:15Speaker 2: clicks or just going viral. Just watching her doing it
- 5:18Speaker 2: the proper way. You can tell that she was skilled,
- 5:20Speaker 2: and she studied and she did the things necessary. So
- 5:23Speaker 2: you know, all of the accolades and the growth that
- 5:25Speaker 2: she's having and the success she's having, I think is
- 5:29Speaker 2: merited and.
- 5:30Speaker 3: She's she's earned it.
- 5:31Speaker 2: So just having this interview and asking a couple of
- 5:34Speaker 2: questions that I never heard anybody else.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Man, So you know, I'm interested.
- 5:38Speaker 4: We get we get an opportunity to do something inspirational
- 5:42Speaker 4: for me today.
- 5:42Speaker 1: So that's it.
- 5:44Speaker 4: We're about to have this incredible sit down conversation with
- 5:49Speaker 4: Laura Laurosa.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Check it out.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Check it out.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Here we go with our friends. Yes, yes, yes, the
- 5:54Speaker 1: c and my show today.
- 5:56Speaker 4: I am excited to have this young lady sitting with us.
- 6:00Speaker 4: This young lady is somebody you know, because you see
- 6:03Speaker 4: her every single day Monday through Friday, bringing us, okay,
- 6:09Speaker 4: bringing us the information, the news and trying to keep
- 6:15Speaker 4: the conversations elevated.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I like that.
- 6:18Speaker 4: I like to see somebody on the in the media
- 6:22Speaker 4: that wants to elevate the conversation and even learn herself
- 6:27Speaker 4: while doing the job. And Lauren l Rosa, who has
- 6:31Speaker 4: become a favorite of mine and I know for my
- 6:34Speaker 4: son as well, is a journalist, a media personality and
- 6:38Speaker 4: host of The Latest with Lauren Larossa, which is a
- 6:41Speaker 4: Black Effect from the Best right. We're siblings, yes, the
- 6:45Speaker 4: cousins right at the Black Effect podcast network. And that
- 6:49Speaker 4: show has become a phenomenon.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I mean, just like that.
- 6:52Speaker 4: It blew up and you know, so happy to see
- 6:55Speaker 4: all the success that you've had. And of course you
- 6:57Speaker 4: are one of the hosts. Now out on the Breakfast Club.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Are you host? See your news producer?
- 7:03Speaker 5: But you see me on the show like I do
- 7:05Speaker 5: a feature. I do The Latest with Lorna Rosa as
- 7:07Speaker 5: a feature, so you do see me on the show off.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Okay, it's okay, not not hosts yet, but you will
- 7:11Speaker 4: be see your news producer.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I mean I guess that I'm there.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I'm but you can tell she's one of the cold
- 7:21Speaker 2: I mean, if you're just paying attention, you realize that
- 7:23Speaker 2: she's an important fixture, a part of the show. So
- 7:26Speaker 2: you know, you know, we have different titles, but if
- 7:29Speaker 2: I'm watching, I'm like, oh, yeah, it's she's one.
- 7:33Speaker 4: That's how what we're gonna say up here, what is it?
- 7:36Speaker 4: We're gonna call your co hosts and we're going to
- 7:39Speaker 4: say journalist because those are the things that you have
- 7:42Speaker 4: been doing and we're excited to have.
- 7:44Speaker 1: You up here with us today.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Excited to be here, guys, so much to learn. I
- 7:50Speaker 4: know about you. Where do we start? Where are you
- 7:52Speaker 4: from Delaware? That's right, Delaware? Who is from Delaware?
- 7:56Speaker 5: I'mn't even going to say everybody when I say from Delaware,
- 7:59Speaker 5: be like you the first person when im from Delaware? Like,
- 8:00Speaker 5: who's from Delaware? I mean that you guys would know
- 8:04Speaker 5: Patients Foster that works with Cardi b. She's from Delaware. Yeah, Suki, Yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 5: she's from Delaware. Who also, y'all know Bone Thailand they're
- 8:14Speaker 5: playing in NBA. Yeah, yeah, he's from Delaware.
- 8:18Speaker 1: It's a couple of us. Joe Biden is from Delaware. Yeah,
- 8:20Speaker 1: Joe Biden. I didn't Yeah, I was on political body.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Yeah, Joe Biden from Delaware and when you know every
- 8:27Speaker 5: I think he still has an office and headquarters there.
- 8:29Speaker 5: But like when all of the like you know, when
- 8:31Speaker 5: their administration was doing all the things, they were headquartered
- 8:33Speaker 5: like writing womens and where I'm from, like I could
- 8:35Speaker 5: walk from their headquarters to like my mom's gript.
- 8:37Speaker 4: So I have family members that live in Delaware, but
- 8:39Speaker 4: they're they're expats, I guess is what you call them,
- 8:43Speaker 4: people who like lived somewhere else and then they moved.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah, a lot of people move, especially like
- 8:48Speaker 5: from like New York, yeah places to Delaware because you
- 8:50Speaker 5: can buy a house, you got more space, you get
- 8:53Speaker 5: more for your money. Like a lot of my family,
- 8:55Speaker 5: like a lot of my family's from the Bronx, but
- 8:57Speaker 5: they moved to Delaware.
- 8:58Speaker 1: So I have family year, I family Delaware.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Yeah, but I mean I don't really you were born,
- 9:06Speaker 5: born and raised in Delaware. But my mom though, she
- 9:09Speaker 5: like my mom's dad, that's his family.
- 9:12Speaker 1: They're they're from the Bronx.
- 9:13Speaker 5: My mom's moms one sixth they're gonna get to man
- 9:16Speaker 5: if I noticed one six seven Shakespeare, that's.
- 9:19Speaker 3: She's from the Bridge.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know from there, but yeah, my family,
- 9:26Speaker 4: my family is there here, Lord have mercy.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I probably she's from Shakespeare not so it's.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Like the little park.
- 9:34Speaker 5: My my building is a crosstreet from the park. So
- 9:37Speaker 5: like my whole life, we've been coming up.
- 9:38Speaker 2: And going like the park and then and all of that.
- 9:43Speaker 1: But you on the corner, I just know.
- 9:45Speaker 4: It's the story. It's from out of town. Always want
- 9:48Speaker 4: to bring up the corners because the story is right.
- 9:50Speaker 5: It's the store, the barbershop is right next to the building,
- 9:52Speaker 5: like and then all up so like if you go
- 9:54Speaker 5: there socially the weekend, like my uncle just you pull up,
- 9:56Speaker 5: they just out there like you know, so.
- 9:58Speaker 3: That's that's really the hood.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I didn't know. I knew they was from the Bronx,
- 10:04Speaker 1: and I knew it was like you know, I knew
- 10:05Speaker 1: it was the like the hood. Yeah, like I knew,
- 10:07Speaker 1: but I.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Didn't know literally around the corner from this yeah in
- 10:11Speaker 2: one eight and you talk about one sixty seven in Shakespeare.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't know all that.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Somebody had to tell me, like you know what, that's
- 10:18Speaker 5: Highbridge and I was like, oh, that's where they will
- 10:20Speaker 5: get you rapping about. But I've been there my whole life,
- 10:22Speaker 5: but I've never heard them say Hybridge. So I didn't
- 10:26Speaker 5: really like no, I just we go see my family.
- 10:29Speaker 4: What's the difference growing up? So, now that you know,
- 10:33Speaker 4: and since you have been visiting the Bronx all your life, yeah,
- 10:36Speaker 4: and then you you were born and raised in Delaware,
- 10:39Speaker 4: what's the difference in the culture.
- 10:41Speaker 5: Oh, my gosh, I mean you mean like as far
- 10:44Speaker 5: as like the like my surroundings. It's like, yeah, so
- 10:47Speaker 5: I grew up in the city of like I'm from Delaware,
- 10:50Speaker 5: but I'm from Women's in Delaware.
- 10:51Speaker 1: So Women's in Delaware is the city.
- 10:53Speaker 5: So it's like we have our own like stuff Like
- 10:56Speaker 5: we we have like our own like places you go out,
- 11:01Speaker 5: you know, you a couple places you shop, like, we
- 11:03Speaker 5: got a lot going on there too. It's things and
- 11:05Speaker 5: places and blocks you stay away from. It's just smaller.
- 11:09Speaker 5: But then like at the same time, like when we
- 11:11Speaker 5: would come to New York, my mom would like take
- 11:13Speaker 5: us to like Times Square, we would go to Broadway,
- 11:16Speaker 5: we would all that, and then we would go stay
- 11:18Speaker 5: at my aunt's house in the Bronx.
- 11:19Speaker 1: So the only difference to me was like it was
- 11:22Speaker 1: just way bigger.
- 11:23Speaker 5: I didn't really understand the difference a lot of that
- 11:25Speaker 5: until I got older, Like I mean, it's like you know,
- 11:28Speaker 5: but like you really don't know. And then like once
- 11:31Speaker 5: I started to meet like cause I like, I have
- 11:33Speaker 5: cousins of course that live up here and all that,
- 11:35Speaker 5: but I didn't really know much about their lives. I
- 11:37Speaker 5: only knew like I would see them when I would
- 11:38Speaker 5: come here. But once you get older and you're hearing
- 11:41Speaker 5: them talk about like, oh, they take the train to school,
- 11:43Speaker 5: and I'm like, oh, that's different.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Like we get on a bus or I drive. So
- 11:47Speaker 1: that's the difference.
- 11:48Speaker 5: And I think in New York when you like a
- 11:50Speaker 5: lot of my family I grew up here, like my uncles,
- 11:53Speaker 5: like a lot of them, they're older now and they
- 11:55Speaker 5: moving to Jersey and they kind of out the way.
- 11:57Speaker 5: In Delaware, I grew up in the city and we've
- 12:00Speaker 5: always lived in the city. But like my cousin's there,
- 12:02Speaker 5: their family, like their moms couldn't wait to get them
- 12:04Speaker 5: out the city because you have the option, like you
- 12:06Speaker 5: could literally go ten minutes and you're in like a suburb,
- 12:09Speaker 5: versus in New York it's like it's all city. You
- 12:11Speaker 5: gotta go like you gotta go a minute to go
- 12:13Speaker 5: upstate to get away from things. It's like, so that's
- 12:16Speaker 5: probably the biggest difference. It's like we have a lot
- 12:18Speaker 5: of the same things that y'all have, it's just at
- 12:19Speaker 5: a bigger volume and.
- 12:21Speaker 1: It comes at you faster here.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Yeah, one hundred percent, And you don't, I mean delaware
- 12:26Speaker 5: you kind of like especially where I'm from in the city,
- 12:29Speaker 5: like if you do something or people know you even
- 12:31Speaker 5: if you don't know them, know them, Like people know
- 12:33Speaker 5: you here. It's like you can come here and everybody
- 12:36Speaker 5: got something going on, like everybody do something. It's not
- 12:40Speaker 5: like that at home, like people will be having things
- 12:42Speaker 5: going on, but there'd be a group of people that
- 12:43Speaker 5: like also just.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Choose not to have something going on at the same time. Yeah,
- 12:47Speaker 1: which then that's here too.
- 12:50Speaker 5: But you can you can go you can be in
- 12:52Speaker 5: a bronx and then come downtown and go to the
- 12:54Speaker 5: city and it's like none of that stuff even existed
- 12:56Speaker 5: of this and woman teen, it's not like you could
- 13:00Speaker 5: go to certain maybe like strips like strip malls and
- 13:03Speaker 5: things are like that, or like certain people who move
- 13:06Speaker 5: into the city to work. Because Womanton is a really
- 13:08Speaker 5: big banking area Delaware, Like people moved there to work
- 13:10Speaker 5: for the bank corporates. But you can it's hard to
- 13:13Speaker 5: kind of escape what's happening because you're like one block
- 13:17Speaker 5: next to the other, Like you can't really get away
- 13:18Speaker 5: from it.
- 13:19Speaker 1: That's easy.
- 13:20Speaker 3: So when did you come to now?
- 13:22Speaker 1: I used to come to New York all the time.
- 13:24Speaker 5: I lived in Delaware forever, but my mom she would
- 13:26Speaker 5: bring us up here, like we probably be up here
- 13:28Speaker 5: like every other weekend.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Just I mean, when did you move?
- 13:30Speaker 1: Oh? I moved here.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Moved here like as an adult twenty twenty three, right
- 13:35Speaker 5: around the time that I started, like right before I
- 13:37Speaker 5: started guest hosting, or no, right a little bit after
- 13:40Speaker 5: I started guest hosting at the Breakfast Club. But I'd
- 13:42Speaker 5: lived here before for internships. Yeah, so I did a
- 13:45Speaker 5: summer living in Brooklyn here. I stayed up here for
- 13:48Speaker 5: like a month or two for my Christmas break working
- 13:51Speaker 5: at Cosmo magazine. Like I lived here a little bit,
- 13:54Speaker 5: but not really as an adult. That just recently happened.
- 13:57Speaker 3: What made you want to get into journalism? Like? Did
- 13:59Speaker 3: you you always know? Like that's what I want to do.
- 14:02Speaker 5: I knew I wanted to have a talk show. I
- 14:05Speaker 5: didn't know that. I was like, I didn't know. It
- 14:07Speaker 5: was like journalism, and like I knew I wanted to
- 14:09Speaker 5: have a talk show. I knew I wanted to like
- 14:13Speaker 5: be able to like my whole thing is like storytelling.
- 14:16Speaker 5: That's always been it for me. So I wanted to
- 14:18Speaker 5: do I wanted to tell stories. I wanted to do
- 14:20Speaker 5: it in fashion. I wanted to do it, you know,
- 14:22Speaker 5: as an actress. I wanted to create TV. I wanted
- 14:24Speaker 5: to I'm going to create TV. But I was like,
- 14:27Speaker 5: you know, once I get to a certain point, I'm
- 14:29Speaker 5: gonna be like Oprah. Like Oprah has a TV show
- 14:32Speaker 5: and a talk show and then like there was Wendy.
- 14:34Speaker 5: I just was like, that's going to be like my
- 14:36Speaker 5: thing I do when I like kind of slow down
- 14:38Speaker 5: a little bit.
- 14:39Speaker 1: And want to have a family.
- 14:40Speaker 4: So journalism was like a like a process on the journey.
- 14:44Speaker 1: It's like you're to your end goal. Yeah.
- 14:47Speaker 5: So for me, I was like, you know, you'll do
- 14:48Speaker 5: all those things like your model, they'll be like clothing branch,
- 14:52Speaker 5: you'll get to act, you'll get to create television. And
- 14:54Speaker 5: then once you build up the relationships and the you know,
- 14:57Speaker 5: people know who you are and want to care about
- 14:59Speaker 5: who you're talking to. Then you will have the show
- 15:02Speaker 5: and you'll kind of do that daily, and you'll have
- 15:04Speaker 5: your family, and you know your back end projects behind
- 15:06Speaker 5: the scenes and clothing lines and in the department stores.
- 15:09Speaker 5: Like that was how I thought this all was going
- 15:12Speaker 5: to go. And yeah, and I don't know where that
- 15:14Speaker 5: came from, to be honest with you, like, I've just
- 15:16Speaker 5: always had the bug for like speaking like yeah, girl.
- 15:21Speaker 2: When she was young, her mother say she talked too
- 15:24Speaker 2: much and on all of that, and realized it.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Worked for her. She said, it actually worked fit all
- 15:29Speaker 3: the stuff they told you, so they didn't tell you.
- 15:31Speaker 5: My mom never told me I talked too much. She
- 15:34Speaker 5: just put me into like I was. She just I
- 15:36Speaker 5: just did yeah, like I was in pageants. I would
- 15:40Speaker 5: produce fashion shows, and my mom would like, let me go.
- 15:42Speaker 5: I would get on the bus and come up here
- 15:43Speaker 5: to New York and audition to get signed by modeling agency,
- 15:47Speaker 5: like all that stuff.
- 15:48Speaker 1: She just let me do it. She never told me
- 15:49Speaker 1: it was too much.
- 15:50Speaker 5: I did have people who told me like, yo, you
- 15:53Speaker 5: always doing something, or you talk too much, but that
- 15:55Speaker 5: never was in my household. My family, like a lot
- 15:58Speaker 5: of my family members, Like you know, my girl mother's
- 16:00Speaker 5: brother had like a really popular band, the Larry Tucker
- 16:03Speaker 5: Band in Delaware. My cousin, my little cousin, Nikayla, she
- 16:06Speaker 5: was up here on Broadway for a while and the
- 16:08Speaker 5: Lion King. She was baby nihlists. I would come watch her.
- 16:11Speaker 5: We all were doing pageants, so like we were always
- 16:13Speaker 5: doing stuff. Anyway, my family is like this, So it's
- 16:16Speaker 5: not like you talk too much. Because everybody talked too much.
- 16:18Speaker 5: I'm probably y'all meet them, I get around them and
- 16:20Speaker 5: get quiet. So like that never happened at home.
- 16:23Speaker 4: So it would you say it was you have a
- 16:25Speaker 4: you're come from an entertainment family, kind of like the
- 16:28Speaker 4: Jackson five type of vibe.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I would put Jackson five on us.
- 16:31Speaker 5: Now I wouldn't say all that, but like now that
- 16:34Speaker 5: I'm in it and I'm like older and I'm thinking back,
- 16:38Speaker 5: I definitely came from I think all black families don'll
- 16:41Speaker 5: be entertainment, like you have characters. I definitely come from
- 16:44Speaker 5: a family full of characters, especially like.
- 16:47Speaker 4: All black people. Yeah, being on Broadway, yes, but I
- 16:51Speaker 4: was bands.
- 16:52Speaker 5: I think there were a few of us who understood
- 16:55Speaker 5: that that could potentially be a business in a lifestyle,
- 16:58Speaker 5: and we did that. But like, for instance, I have
- 17:00Speaker 5: a cousin, Dylan Tucker. He's a comedian, and like we're
- 17:04Speaker 5: older and he's really pursuing his dream and you know,
- 17:06Speaker 5: trying to figure out how to get on as a comedian.
- 17:09Speaker 5: And I'd be thinking, like where did he gets funny from?
- 17:11Speaker 5: And then I think about all my grandmother's brothers. They
- 17:13Speaker 5: all were I mean we would set like they would
- 17:16Speaker 5: literally sit us down and they would like just tell jokes,
- 17:18Speaker 5: and I'm like, oh, they were comedians, but I don't
- 17:21Speaker 5: think that they had the luxury to explore that as
- 17:25Speaker 5: a talent.
- 17:25Speaker 1: It was just like this is what we do.
- 17:27Speaker 5: We do we and our people always gravitated towards our
- 17:30Speaker 5: family because of that.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So like we would have like the best.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Family reunions and parties and my uncles here performing and
- 17:37Speaker 5: people would like go and show up. My grandmother did
- 17:40Speaker 5: the car parties and all the gambling stuff, and everybody
- 17:43Speaker 5: would show up in the parties, but it wasn't like
- 17:46Speaker 5: a job to them. And then you have the younger
- 17:49Speaker 5: generation of my grandmother's like brothers and sisters, who started
- 17:52Speaker 5: thinking about it as a job. So they put it
- 17:54Speaker 5: in there on their grandkids. So like my cousin Nakayla,
- 17:57Speaker 5: my grandmother's sister was her manager for some time, you know,
- 18:00Speaker 5: because like she had the bug as well. But I
- 18:02Speaker 5: think it just got as we got older, got different
- 18:05Speaker 5: for us. We had more opportunity to do stuff, but
- 18:08Speaker 5: they weren't like Jacksaphie like everybody was like, you know,
- 18:11Speaker 5: but we do have some really good like you know,
- 18:14Speaker 5: like one of my aunts was like the first Miss
- 18:15Speaker 5: Black Delaware, like those type of things.
- 18:18Speaker 4: Yeah, like so it's there. It was kind of Jackson
- 18:20Speaker 4: five ish, Jackson three fish.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Let me see.
- 18:28Speaker 4: So what's it like right? Well, first of all, obviously
- 18:32Speaker 4: you found out that the plan you have is not
- 18:34Speaker 4: God's way of doing things. It just winning its own direction.
- 18:42Speaker 4: You were on TMZ, Yes, what was your role there?
- 18:46Speaker 5: I was the senior news producer at TMC and so
- 18:49Speaker 5: like news producers editors like everybody would, we're not everybody,
- 18:54Speaker 5: but they had a good mix of everybody from different
- 18:57Speaker 5: departments on those shows that y'all saw. So I got
- 18:59Speaker 5: to be on the show.
- 19:00Speaker 2: M M.
- 19:00Speaker 4: You got to go up there and do your commentary.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Were you nervous when you first started or were you
- 19:04Speaker 4: all like, oh, I'm ready for this.
- 19:06Speaker 1: This is my dream.
- 19:07Speaker 5: When I first started, I was a tour guide, and
- 19:10Speaker 5: I was my goal was I'm gonna get that because
- 19:12Speaker 5: when you're a tour guide, you're literally riding through Hollywood
- 19:14Speaker 5: and you're hopping off the.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Bus and like I might see.
- 19:17Speaker 5: One of the first celebrities I ever ran into was
- 19:19Speaker 5: ast Rocky, and I hopped off the bus. So you
- 19:20Speaker 5: hop off, you just got to walk up yo, hey,
- 19:22Speaker 5: and you got your camera and it's just you, so
- 19:24Speaker 5: you gotta banter on the spot. I knew like if
- 19:27Speaker 5: my interviews were good, they would get played on the show.
- 19:29Speaker 5: And if they got played on the show, you got
- 19:31Speaker 5: to come in the room and pitch them on the
- 19:32Speaker 5: show and talk about it.
- 19:33Speaker 1: That was my goal. Every day.
- 19:34Speaker 5: I'm like, y'all need to get a celebrity because I
- 19:36Speaker 5: want to get in the room. Not just to get
- 19:38Speaker 5: on TV, but I wanted to get in the newsroom.
- 19:40Speaker 5: I wanted to see what that was like. And I
- 19:42Speaker 5: was like, the more I'm there because my interviews are good,
- 19:45Speaker 5: once they learn who I am, I can be like, Hey,
- 19:49Speaker 5: I want to do this thing called the newsroom.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Can I try it out?
- 19:52Speaker 4: And how did that work, Like did you feel like
- 19:54Speaker 4: you the door was open, like they were like, yes,
- 19:57Speaker 4: we love you, let's go.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Oh, it wasn't love you first. It wasn't a nod.
- 20:01Speaker 5: It wasn't like it was very much like like they
- 20:03Speaker 5: used to make this joke that like to be on
- 20:05Speaker 5: the news that's at TMZ, even if you were already
- 20:07Speaker 5: working there, you kind of like were like Hayes a
- 20:09Speaker 5: little bit because the news that's like it's like the
- 20:12Speaker 5: mean girls at lunch, and it's like you can't sit
- 20:14Speaker 5: with us, and then you go over and try to
- 20:16Speaker 5: sit with them, and it takes you a process before
- 20:18Speaker 5: you finally sitting over there. Yeah, that's kind of how
- 20:20Speaker 5: the news that's the vibe was when I was there.
- 20:22Speaker 5: So when I was on the tour bus, I just
- 20:27Speaker 5: did the best that I could.
- 20:28Speaker 1: So like a lot of my clips picked up.
- 20:29Speaker 5: So like one of my first clips that I remember,
- 20:33Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, Harvey knows my name now, Mariah Carey.
- 20:36Speaker 5: She had just broke up in the cannon and I
- 20:37Speaker 5: ran into her. She was on Rodeo.
- 20:40Speaker 1: No, she was on it was Beverly, not Beverly.
- 20:44Speaker 5: I'd been rodale It was one of those blocks, but
- 20:45Speaker 5: she was, she was out there shopping and she don't
- 20:48Speaker 5: you know, Mariah Care don't talk to people.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Not I mean she does.
- 20:51Speaker 5: More now, but especially then at the time, and she
- 20:53Speaker 5: had just broke up in the Cannon like you're not there,
- 20:55Speaker 5: was Beyonce, you're not getting an interview. No, But I
- 20:58Speaker 5: think me being young, young black girl, like people see
- 21:01Speaker 5: me out here hustling, Like a lot of times when
- 21:03Speaker 5: I would get off the bus, even if the celebrities
- 21:04Speaker 5: didn't want to talk to me, they wouldn't be rude
- 21:06Speaker 5: because they liked, yes, like we see what you're trying
- 21:09Speaker 5: to do here, like we get it, we understand.
- 21:11Speaker 1: So I just walked up on it.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Her security was like trying to like they was getting
- 21:15Speaker 5: me out of there, and she was like no, no, no, no, no,
- 21:16Speaker 5: let her walk with us. And I was like all right,
- 21:18Speaker 5: bat boom camera on. We walked and talked for like
- 21:20Speaker 5: thirty forty minutes. So I talked to her about like
- 21:22Speaker 5: Nick Cannon and like I just you know, just talked
- 21:25Speaker 5: to her like she was a person. And eventually I
- 21:27Speaker 5: got to the Nick cann and stuff, and the SoundBite
- 21:29Speaker 5: I got from her it like they posted it to
- 21:31Speaker 5: the website and it was everywhere and they use it
- 21:33Speaker 5: on all the shows. It was cross like all the
- 21:35Speaker 5: news outlets. And I always knew that, like whether I
- 21:39Speaker 5: was going to tell stories like in front of the
- 21:42Speaker 5: camera behind the camera, it only made like the only
- 21:45Speaker 5: thing that would break through was what do people want
- 21:47Speaker 5: to know and how can you tell it to them?
- 21:49Speaker 5: Or like what do people want to learn about? What
- 21:50Speaker 5: do they want to see? And how can you do
- 21:52Speaker 5: it in a way that's not already happening. And I've
- 21:54Speaker 5: always just had that like nack of like being able
- 21:57Speaker 5: to do that.
- 21:58Speaker 1: So that's what I was doing.
- 22:00Speaker 5: I was just I would know exactly what we were
- 22:02Speaker 5: focused on on the website, where we were talking about
- 22:04Speaker 5: what the world was talking about, and when I would
- 22:05Speaker 5: run into celebrities, I would try and get the Okay,
- 22:08Speaker 5: well you've already talked about this, but what about this?
- 22:11Speaker 5: And then it was working. So the more I got
- 22:13Speaker 5: in there, eventually it got to a point where they
- 22:15Speaker 5: were like, so what you're doing, like what you're trying
- 22:19Speaker 5: to do? And I was like, I want to be
- 22:21Speaker 5: on a news desk and they were like, okay, but
- 22:23Speaker 5: you have to start as a PA. And by that time.
- 22:25Speaker 5: I had been a production assistant so many times and interned.
- 22:29Speaker 5: I was like, I'm not doing that, Like, no, that's disrespectful,
- 22:32Speaker 5: and they were like, so only way in you gotta
- 22:33Speaker 5: learn the brand. So I was like, okay, So I
- 22:36Speaker 5: became a PA for some time, and you're literally in
- 22:39Speaker 5: the newsroom, but you're not really like on the news
- 22:42Speaker 5: desk like you are watching stories you're doing. You're definitely
- 22:47Speaker 5: learning the brand because you're seeing like what goes through
- 22:49Speaker 5: the team email, what makes it to the website, what
- 22:51Speaker 5: makes it to the shows. I really got a really
- 22:54Speaker 5: good you chance to learn the difference between like a
- 22:58Speaker 5: morning time day time show, live show like TMZ Live
- 23:01Speaker 5: is like a daytime talk show versus like their primetime
- 23:05Speaker 5: more funny, more edgier show, how to structure a show
- 23:09Speaker 5: from top to bottom, your big topics to your small topics,
- 23:11Speaker 5: book and guests. Like I learned so much stuff and
- 23:14Speaker 5: then I kind of went over to the news desk.
- 23:16Speaker 5: And once I got on the news desk, it was
- 23:17Speaker 5: really it was tough. But I wasn't tripping, I wasn't
- 23:20Speaker 5: scared or anything. But I just remember thinking like I'm
- 23:23Speaker 5: glad I humbled myself and learned the brand because I
- 23:26Speaker 5: saw so many people come through here that like really
- 23:28Speaker 5: they just they were great, but they just didn't get it.
- 23:31Speaker 5: And it's like it was something you couldn't teach and
- 23:34Speaker 5: they would just miss the brand, like the voice of
- 23:38Speaker 5: the brand. And I'm like, oh, I'm so happy I
- 23:40Speaker 5: did that, and I was so mad. I fought it
- 23:41Speaker 5: for so long. I was like, yo, you're not making
- 23:43Speaker 5: me no pa like and no shade to the pas.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Everybody matters on.
- 23:46Speaker 1: The set, he said, But it had already done it.
- 23:48Speaker 5: But I had already done yes, and I'd done it extensively,
- 23:50Speaker 5: like I had done a lot before I got to LA.
- 23:52Speaker 5: So I just felt like, no, I don't want to
- 23:54Speaker 5: go backwards. But it was the best thing I think
- 23:56Speaker 5: I've ever done.
- 23:58Speaker 3: So most people would look and be like you just
- 24:01Speaker 3: this overnight success.
- 24:02Speaker 5: Mult people. The people say that to me. Literally, yeah,
- 24:05Speaker 5: people say that to me and visually like.
- 24:08Speaker 2: You pay attention. It's like, Okay, I've seen her here
- 24:11Speaker 2: today and nat you know what she's there? What do
- 24:13Speaker 2: you say to that? Like do you realize do you
- 24:15Speaker 2: feel like you had a process that was up and down?
- 24:17Speaker 3: Do you feel like it was easier?
- 24:19Speaker 5: Multiple No, it was not easier, and I'm so glad
- 24:23Speaker 5: that I've logged it.
- 24:24Speaker 1: When people say that to me, I'd be like, y'all
- 24:25Speaker 1: go check out my YouTube channel.
- 24:27Speaker 5: For years, I've logged trying to figure out LA, like
- 24:30Speaker 5: to the point where like my cars reported and I'm
- 24:32Speaker 5: crying on my camera because the only thing that was
- 24:35Speaker 5: working for me was YouTube and it wasn't even working
- 24:37Speaker 5: for me making no money. It was helping me grow
- 24:40Speaker 5: up following and I just knew I could figure something
- 24:41Speaker 5: out with that and make my own money eventually. But like,
- 24:44Speaker 5: I documented everything, So when people say that to me,
- 24:47Speaker 5: I'd be like, Yo, you should go check out my
- 24:48Speaker 5: YouTube channel.
- 24:49Speaker 1: And I it's so crazy.
- 24:51Speaker 5: I think this is like a god confirmation thing because
- 24:53Speaker 5: the other day I was trying to get an idea
- 24:55Speaker 5: for something I want to do I want to launch soon,
- 24:57Speaker 5: and I just went down my YouTube channel was at
- 25:00Speaker 5: my old videos, and I was like, I should put
- 25:01Speaker 5: this out again, like repurpose it and show people, because no,
- 25:05Speaker 5: my journey was not easy. I moved to LA twice.
- 25:08Speaker 5: People only talk about the second time when I was
- 25:09Speaker 5: working with TMZ. The first time. I graduated from college
- 25:12Speaker 5: in twenty fourteen. I didn't have no job, no plan,
- 25:15Speaker 5: no anything. My grandmother had a couple of dollars that
- 25:18Speaker 5: she saved up for me and was like here. My
- 25:20Speaker 5: mom was like, you should buy property in Delaware and
- 25:23Speaker 5: then go and you always have money.
- 25:24Speaker 1: And I was like, no, I don't want to buy
- 25:26Speaker 1: a property. You just try and keep me here.
- 25:28Speaker 5: I took all that money went to LA and seven
- 25:30Speaker 5: months I had nothing and had to My mom literally
- 25:33Speaker 5: called me and was like, all right, this is how
- 25:34Speaker 5: much money I got for you. Do you want me
- 25:36Speaker 5: to ship your car so you can sleep in your
- 25:38Speaker 5: car and you don't got to give them more your
- 25:39Speaker 5: dream or you can come home what you want to
- 25:42Speaker 5: use the money for.
- 25:43Speaker 1: And I was like, I'm gonna just come home. Came home.
- 25:46Speaker 5: I had did an internship at barclaycar Us So Barclays
- 25:50Speaker 5: like the Barclay Center, that bank. I had did an
- 25:52Speaker 5: internship because my degree is in marketing, like I went
- 25:54Speaker 5: to school for business.
- 25:56Speaker 1: So I did an internship for them for.
- 25:58Speaker 5: Like two years and I worked with them, like you know,
- 26:02Speaker 5: for some time, just building a relationship. So my boss
- 26:06Speaker 5: it's like, I know they wanted me to go to LA,
- 26:08Speaker 5: but they really loved me, so she was always checking
- 26:11Speaker 5: in on me, like when I graduated, trying to see
- 26:13Speaker 5: what was going on. So the day I was headed back,
- 26:16Speaker 5: she happened to text me and just be like, Hey,
- 26:18Speaker 5: how's everything going to La, Like you know, she was
- 26:20Speaker 5: trying to help me figure it out, and I was like,
- 26:22Speaker 5: I'm on my way back, I'm on the plane right now,
- 26:24Speaker 5: and I don't know what I'm about to do, but
- 26:25Speaker 5: like I need to figure something out. And she was like,
- 26:27Speaker 5: we'll make a job here for you and we can
- 26:29Speaker 5: figure it out where Like in my mind, I'm like, ugh,
- 26:32Speaker 5: I don't want to work at this bank. What am
- 26:34Speaker 5: I going to do at a bank? Like I'm a creative,
- 26:36Speaker 5: I want a model, I want to tell stories, you know,
- 26:38Speaker 5: all the HIPI stuff. When you're gonna money, try to
- 26:40Speaker 5: figure it out. But like it was murdered about like
- 26:42Speaker 5: a passion. I just was like I don't want to
- 26:44Speaker 5: be somewherehere, like I'm so depleted that, like you know,
- 26:47Speaker 5: like I shouldn't have to do that. They made a
- 26:50Speaker 5: job for me, and it was very much like you know,
- 26:53Speaker 5: it was community relations. So it was dope being back
- 26:56Speaker 5: home in my city and getting to talk to all
- 26:59Speaker 5: these white rich people with all this money trying to
- 27:01Speaker 5: help people that they don't know nothing about. So that
- 27:04Speaker 5: was a good experience for me about like just seeing
- 27:07Speaker 5: the difference between corporate and community and where everything lies
- 27:12Speaker 5: in at like entertainment, Like I didn't know banks for
- 27:14Speaker 5: the literally the foundation of everything. So I got to
- 27:17Speaker 5: see like their entertainment partnerships. I got to see all
- 27:20Speaker 5: of their program and I got to see how they
- 27:21Speaker 5: fund stuff, how they fund movies.
- 27:23Speaker 1: I got to see so much. It was like the
- 27:25Speaker 1: best thing I could have ever done.
- 27:27Speaker 5: Second best thing because the PA job at TMZ was
- 27:30Speaker 5: good too, but yeah.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a journey. It was a lot of that,
- 27:34Speaker 1: and I appreciate.
- 27:35Speaker 4: That's why I wanted to take the time to listen
- 27:38Speaker 4: to the story because oftentimes young people and a lot
- 27:42Speaker 4: of people feel like they can just jump past in
- 27:46Speaker 4: particular steps. And sometimes you do see overnight successes. It
- 27:50Speaker 4: happens heavy now and then, but almost always they those
- 27:55Speaker 4: individuals who do have the overnight success have to double
- 27:58Speaker 4: back and go get it's something that they missed along
- 28:02Speaker 4: the way. So you see artists who end up going
- 28:05Speaker 4: to Harvard Business School courses because they like damn all
- 28:09Speaker 4: the money either I wasted or that was stolen from
- 28:11Speaker 4: me because I just didn't know. I didn't know how
- 28:13Speaker 4: to to do deals, you know, I didn't know how
- 28:17Speaker 4: to listen for words that really it sound good but
- 28:20Speaker 4: actually it was tracks. Like I didn't know, So I
- 28:23Speaker 4: had to go backwards to learn all those things. That
- 28:27Speaker 4: is a normal, that's a that is a thing that
- 28:30Speaker 4: I see happening to people regularly, and it just doesn't
- 28:34Speaker 4: get on Instagram, you know, in a video clip. So
- 28:37Speaker 4: people don't know that folks have suffered because they did
- 28:41Speaker 4: not travel through a process and learn the things that
- 28:44Speaker 4: they actually didn't know. So I think that you know,
- 28:47Speaker 4: listening to you and what you're explaining, it's it's a
- 28:51Speaker 4: it's like it's educational.
- 28:53Speaker 5: That's why I've blogged it though when I was in La. Yeah,
- 28:55Speaker 5: because when I moved to LA, I felt like all
- 28:57Speaker 5: of the like influencers and the people that were blogging
- 28:59Speaker 5: it was like cute little house tours and like, don't
- 29:02Speaker 5: get me wrong, I was trying to do that stuff too.
- 29:04Speaker 5: I'm like they getting brand deals or whatever, But that
- 29:06Speaker 5: wasn't my that wasn't my ministry. Like I didn't have
- 29:09Speaker 5: the house to tour, I would sleeping on my friend couch.
- 29:11Speaker 5: So I was like, yo, like, you know, what can
- 29:15Speaker 5: I do if I'm higher myself right now, I'm the
- 29:16Speaker 5: only person that's gonna put myself on camera?
- 29:18Speaker 1: What can I do?
- 29:18Speaker 5: And I was like, I just gotta be honest about
- 29:20Speaker 5: I gotta tell my story. Like if you a storyteller,
- 29:22Speaker 5: the best story you can tell is when you're really
- 29:24Speaker 5: living for real. So I literally started doing that, Like
- 29:27Speaker 5: the description on my YouTube channel might still be there,
- 29:30Speaker 5: but the description forever was from my friend's couch to
- 29:33Speaker 5: National TV because it was literally like you were walking
- 29:36Speaker 5: with me from the day I got to LA the
- 29:39Speaker 5: day I quit my job that I moved to because
- 29:42Speaker 5: I was when I moved to LA, I didn't move
- 29:44Speaker 5: the second time, and I stayed. I didn't move to LA,
- 29:46Speaker 5: And it was like TMZ. I moved to LA as
- 29:48Speaker 5: a publicist. I got a fashion pr job. Hated the job, but.
- 29:52Speaker 1: It moved me to LA.
- 29:53Speaker 5: I was there enough and I got like, you know,
- 29:55Speaker 5: my feet planning for a second before I was like no,
- 29:58Speaker 5: I'm out.
- 29:58Speaker 1: But it it was a real, like real journey.
- 30:03Speaker 4: These young people don't like jobs. That's not their thing,
- 30:07Speaker 4: Like it's because they have the option to.
- 30:09Speaker 5: Like, to me, a job was always like a backup
- 30:12Speaker 5: plan you got to have now, but now it's like
- 30:15Speaker 5: their backup playing.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Like there's a lot of young people that are making
- 30:18Speaker 1: a lot of money.
- 30:18Speaker 5: Like there's there's a lot of young girls where I
- 30:21Speaker 5: grew up at right now that do hair and lashes,
- 30:23Speaker 5: and their planning is to like go get a business
- 30:26Speaker 5: skill set of some sort and probably not a four
- 30:28Speaker 5: year college and open up salon suites and and live
- 30:31Speaker 5: good off of that and build their business on social.
- 30:33Speaker 5: Like it's just different now, And I understand like when
- 30:37Speaker 5: we're like nah, but you gotta understand, like you gotta
- 30:40Speaker 5: learn life a little bit, because I know for me,
- 30:43Speaker 5: I be learning it every day and I'm like, I'm
- 30:45Speaker 5: so happy that I have it because I can bounce
- 30:48Speaker 5: back from whatever. But it's different for the kids nowadays,
- 30:51Speaker 5: their learned life looks a little different because of social
- 30:53Speaker 5: it's different.
- 30:54Speaker 3: The brown girl grind, Yes, where did that come from?
- 30:58Speaker 5: When I was in LA the second time, I was
- 31:00Speaker 5: trying to get an agent so I could start acting,
- 31:03Speaker 5: and I met with this agent. It was an Asian guy,
- 31:05Speaker 5: and we're gonna act to Oh that was the goal.
- 31:08Speaker 5: I wanted to All of this was like really a
- 31:10Speaker 5: retirement plan, like what I'm doing now, I thought I
- 31:12Speaker 5: was gonna be doing. Yeah no, Like I wanted to model.
- 31:15Speaker 5: I wanted to act. I wanted to develop and cast
- 31:18Speaker 5: and script like all in my background before this was that,
- 31:21Speaker 5: Like it was all casting and script like Janod Shante.
- 31:26Speaker 5: The work I got I worked like my first like
- 31:30Speaker 5: kind of real job was like casting. I worked with
- 31:32Speaker 5: a casting company called vpe town A Vine Potosivo. We
- 31:35Speaker 5: casted him for like one of his first gigs ever.
- 31:37Speaker 5: Like I had like so much experience and everything else,
- 31:40Speaker 5: but this and this was the thing that worked out.
- 31:42Speaker 5: That's how first, That's how I was like, this is crazy,
- 31:45Speaker 5: but yeah, I yeah it was. It was I honestly
- 31:51Speaker 5: thought that I was going to like model, act and
- 31:54Speaker 5: then at like sixty, I'd be like Oprah by that
- 31:58Speaker 5: point and then talk show in marriage And that's how
- 32:01Speaker 5: I had it all planned out.
- 32:02Speaker 1: So it was the complete opposite.
- 32:04Speaker 5: Like I can't even describe to y'all how much of
- 32:07Speaker 5: a complete opposite it is. But everything is coming back
- 32:09Speaker 5: around again, like everything so like now it will be
- 32:13Speaker 5: things that come up or opportunities that are presented, and
- 32:16Speaker 5: I'll be like, yo, we've been doing that, Like a
- 32:18Speaker 5: lot of my friends that work with me, like my team,
- 32:20Speaker 5: we've been working together since was like thirteen years old.
- 32:22Speaker 5: So like something will come up and we'll be like, yo,
- 32:24Speaker 5: we was doing that in high school.
- 32:25Speaker 1: But people don't know me, so.
- 32:27Speaker 5: They don't know so when they see it, like I
- 32:29Speaker 5: did I walked in a fashion week show, people was like,
- 32:30Speaker 5: it's that the girlfriend the breakfast club.
- 32:32Speaker 1: She could actually walk.
- 32:33Speaker 5: I'm like, I've been modeling since I was eleven, but
- 32:37Speaker 5: it's weird. It's so crazy. How like I don't even
- 32:40Speaker 5: know if the question.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Was anymore, But brodvob.
- 32:42Speaker 5: Grinning came about though, because I met with an agent,
- 32:44Speaker 5: and the agent he had a daughter and he was
- 32:47Speaker 5: just really nice and he was just like, y'all, I
- 32:49Speaker 5: don't even want to waste your time. I want to
- 32:50Speaker 5: be honest with you. Like if you were my daughter
- 32:53Speaker 5: and you walked in this office, I would want someone
- 32:54Speaker 5: to do to say this to her. Soon'll take it away.
- 32:57Speaker 5: And he was like, you're a black woman in LA
- 33:01Speaker 5: in your brown skin. He was like, how many if
- 33:03Speaker 5: you look at you want to do act, you want
- 33:05Speaker 5: to act, and you want to be in a talk
- 33:08Speaker 5: show host.
- 33:08Speaker 1: He was like, look.
- 33:09Speaker 5: Around and tell me right now, how many women that
- 33:11Speaker 5: look like you are on television doing what you're saying
- 33:14Speaker 5: you want to do in a talk show space. I
- 33:16Speaker 5: think at the time I could only point to Wendy Williams,
- 33:18Speaker 5: and then of course Oprah, but Oprah's like not even
- 33:20Speaker 5: a real person. But it was like Wendy Williams and
- 33:22Speaker 5: then like, you know, you had your like regular like
- 33:25Speaker 5: black actresses. And then he was like, but then you
- 33:27Speaker 5: also want to model to and Who's like, that's a
- 33:30Speaker 5: lot of crossover, like what black women are like crossing
- 33:33Speaker 5: over successfully like that that are like actually making money.
- 33:37Speaker 5: And he was like, I can't make any money off
- 33:39Speaker 5: of you. So he was like you know, wow, yeah,
- 33:42Speaker 5: he was like I could. We could do this thing
- 33:44Speaker 5: called like fishing, which is where you don't officially sign,
- 33:47Speaker 5: but the agency is like, hey, we're representing her, and
- 33:50Speaker 5: then they throw me out there a little bit to
- 33:52Speaker 5: just kind of see what bites to see if people
- 33:55Speaker 5: are interested. He was like, you know, we could do
- 33:56Speaker 5: that for some time, but I'm be honest with you,
- 33:58Speaker 5: like I don't even know how I can how I
- 34:00Speaker 5: would sell you like you do. There's too much that
- 34:02Speaker 5: you do black girl, brown skin, like you just don't
- 34:06Speaker 5: see that. So I left out of there, and I
- 34:08Speaker 5: was mad, but I appreciate it. It wasn't coming from
- 34:10Speaker 5: a harmful place. He was really being honest with me.
- 34:12Speaker 5: And I think he could tell I was like really
- 34:15Speaker 5: like new to la and you know, he didn't want
- 34:17Speaker 5: me to like, I think he thought I was gonna
- 34:19Speaker 5: get caught up in like somebody selling me a dream.
- 34:21Speaker 5: So he was like, let me be honest with you
- 34:23Speaker 5: about what's really what the climate is right now. But
- 34:26Speaker 5: when I left, I was just like, all right, if
- 34:28Speaker 5: he's telling me that like brown skin, like that's my
- 34:31Speaker 5: like thing, that won't get me sold. That means that
- 34:35Speaker 5: there is nobody within that space that people don't understand
- 34:37Speaker 5: it yet. And what if, like I use that, like
- 34:39Speaker 5: the market is wide open, so like what if I
- 34:41Speaker 5: just leaned into it and if people don't know who
- 34:43Speaker 5: I am, it's fine, But like if you see brown
- 34:45Speaker 5: girl grinding, that'll be like, yo, what's that? You'll want
- 34:48Speaker 5: to pay attention versus oh, this is Lauren, who's brown
- 34:50Speaker 5: girl grinding? So I just started hashtagging it. Like when
- 34:53Speaker 5: I would upload videos, I would post a photo, anything
- 34:56Speaker 5: I would put on social I would hashtag brown Girl grinding.
- 34:59Speaker 5: And it picked up like other girls started doing the
- 35:01Speaker 5: same thing, Like they started like po like they would
- 35:03Speaker 5: be out and about it events and would hashtag like
- 35:06Speaker 5: brown garg grinder like you could at one point. And
- 35:09Speaker 5: it was so crazy because I never told people to
- 35:11Speaker 5: do it, they just started. It was synonymous because I
- 35:15Speaker 5: was really trying to figure it out and I was
- 35:16Speaker 5: really grinding. So other girls that wanted to figure it
- 35:19Speaker 5: out was doing it with me, and we were hashtaging
- 35:21Speaker 5: and it became a community. So in twenty sixteen, I
- 35:25Speaker 5: launched it as a production company because my goal with
- 35:27Speaker 5: Brown Guard Grinding is to help people that are kind
- 35:31Speaker 5: of like me that don't really understand what box they check,
- 35:34Speaker 5: but know that they can do something well like do
- 35:37Speaker 5: it and tell the story and own it when they
- 35:39Speaker 5: do it too.
- 35:40Speaker 1: So that's where it came from.
- 35:42Speaker 4: That's interesting conversation because over the last you know, few weeks,
- 35:48Speaker 4: so what have you my son has been on this
- 35:51Speaker 4: conversation about blue Face Oh Lord, and it's the Young
- 35:56Speaker 4: Lady where he says that she's a a dark skin and.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Y'all, I hate that.
- 36:03Speaker 5: For a dark skinned girl pretty for a brown skinned girl,
- 36:06Speaker 5: I hate that.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Yeah, y'all can talk about that, y'all because he's got
- 36:10Speaker 4: plenty to say about it.
- 36:12Speaker 1: But you know, when did you know you were darker
- 36:15Speaker 1: skin or darker tone? I've always known, I mean my mom.
- 36:20Speaker 4: When I meet I'm asking it a certain way to
- 36:23Speaker 4: say when did you know?
- 36:24Speaker 1: Sometimes like certain people didn't know they were poor until
- 36:28Speaker 1: you get around people.
- 36:28Speaker 4: That's like until somebody's like you ain't got or why
- 36:32Speaker 4: you know or whatever, or you hav an experience, when
- 36:34Speaker 4: did you My mom is like extremely, I'm gonna show
- 36:36Speaker 4: your my mom.
- 36:37Speaker 1: My mom is extremely light skinned with freckles. Oh yeah,
- 36:40Speaker 1: like you know what I'm saying.
- 36:41Speaker 5: So I used to get like and I remember my
- 36:43Speaker 5: mom would come to my school and people be like,
- 36:46Speaker 5: that is not your mom, and I'd be like, yes,
- 36:48Speaker 5: it is, but they would literally try to convince me
- 36:51Speaker 5: that it was not my mom because she was lighter
- 36:53Speaker 5: than me and she had the freckles and her hair
- 36:56Speaker 5: texture was different. Like, so I've always kind of like
- 37:01Speaker 5: the conversation has always been there.
- 37:03Speaker 1: For me, and I had to understand that really early?
- 37:05Speaker 1: Did she teach you?
- 37:07Speaker 5: Oh yeah, my mom is like in my house, you
- 37:09Speaker 5: wasn't you couldn't you weren't escaping or real conversations, Like
- 37:13Speaker 5: I think my mom's thing was always just trying to
- 37:15Speaker 5: prepare me for the world because she got she went
- 37:18Speaker 5: out in the world young, like she was sixteen years
- 37:20Speaker 5: old and moved up here with her dad and her
- 37:21Speaker 5: family appears, so she experienced, she grew.
- 37:24Speaker 1: She kind of like taught herself a lot about growing up.
- 37:26Speaker 5: So for me and for my brother, I think her
- 37:29Speaker 5: thing always was I want to teach my children about
- 37:32Speaker 5: growing up before the world does, and I want them
- 37:34Speaker 5: to form their own identity, in their own sense of
- 37:36Speaker 5: self before the world comes in, because the world is
- 37:38Speaker 5: going to try to knock all that down, and it
- 37:40Speaker 5: might happen. The world might knock it down, but if
- 37:41Speaker 5: you if you're rooted in a certain foundation, you can
- 37:44Speaker 5: always get back to it. So I would have those
- 37:46Speaker 5: conversations with my mom. But then also to how like
- 37:50Speaker 5: you know, like you you're a girl, you run around
- 37:53Speaker 5: with your friends, you got light skinned friends, and you
- 37:54Speaker 5: hearing little things that the boys is saying. When it
- 37:56Speaker 5: comes to the light skinned girl versus you being a
- 37:58Speaker 5: dark skinned girl. Like that was prevalent very young.
- 38:04Speaker 1: With my mom.
- 38:04Speaker 5: It didn't bother me because I just used to think
- 38:06Speaker 5: it was like funny. I used to be like, why
- 38:08Speaker 5: do people never think that this is my mom? Like
- 38:09Speaker 5: what is wrong with y'all? But I remember one time
- 38:12Speaker 5: I was with my cousins. I have, like some cousins
- 38:15Speaker 5: that are lighter than me, too, different hair texture, longer hair,
- 38:18Speaker 5: And I remember I had I used to throw parties
- 38:20Speaker 5: in middle school and high school, and I remember I
- 38:22Speaker 5: had a party and they came and I remember somebody
- 38:24Speaker 5: said to me, it's no way those can be your cousins.
- 38:26Speaker 1: They're so pretty and their hair is so long.
- 38:28Speaker 5: That pissed me off, and I was like like what.
- 38:31Speaker 4: You like, why would you ever say something like that,
- 38:33Speaker 4: Like why you mean yes, it's.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Like, why am I like that? The hair that it
- 38:38Speaker 1: that completely through?
- 38:40Speaker 5: I think, yeah, that was the first time where I
- 38:41Speaker 5: was like like angry, like oh, okay, so you you're
- 38:45Speaker 5: belitting me right now. But outside of that, I think
- 38:49Speaker 5: it was just like a little small stuff, like you know,
- 38:50Speaker 5: you're being a group of friends and you have you're
- 38:54Speaker 5: just hearing like oh, light skin this and like, like boys,
- 38:57Speaker 5: I feel like would make it such a thing when
- 38:59Speaker 5: you were up, and you know when you thirteen fourteen,
- 39:02Speaker 5: fifteen sixteen, boys and your friends are like everything, like
- 39:06Speaker 5: you think that the world is going to end if
- 39:08Speaker 5: things are not right in that little circle. But that
- 39:11Speaker 5: was probably the only time where I was like upset
- 39:13Speaker 5: about it.
- 39:16Speaker 4: So, okay, you go through all of these different yeah things,
- 39:20Speaker 4: life is happening, and that you're growing and going and
- 39:24Speaker 4: learning and having to step back and step forward, and
- 39:27Speaker 4: then somewhere along the line, you get the call that
- 39:29Speaker 4: they're looking for a new host at Breakfast Club and
- 39:33Speaker 4: they are going to be having different guests hosts.
- 39:37Speaker 1: It didn't happen like that, but.
- 39:38Speaker 5: Okay's amazing they Angelae announced it, and I was working
- 39:42Speaker 5: in the newsroom, so I'm just sitting at my desk
- 39:44Speaker 5: watching trending news go by and Breakfast Club and Angela
- 39:48Speaker 5: he started trending, and I was like, what the heck happened?
- 39:50Speaker 5: Because early something like that, something something happened to somebody,
- 39:52Speaker 5: So I'm like, what happened? So I clicked the look
- 39:54Speaker 5: and I see her tweet like Breakfast Club will never
- 39:56Speaker 5: be the same.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Or remember what she h? They were yeah, and I'm like, yeah.
- 40:00Speaker 5: Does that mean that like we'll talk about it then,
- 40:02Speaker 5: you know. So she did the whole reveal about you know,
- 40:04Speaker 5: how she was going to leave into her own show
- 40:05Speaker 5: and all that started, and I actually so I nextused
- 40:09Speaker 5: her number, got her number, reached out to her and
- 40:13Speaker 5: was like, I want to set up an interview with
- 40:15Speaker 5: you about you leaving the Breakfast Club for you know,
- 40:17Speaker 5: not like TIMZ, let go send the camera. So I
- 40:19Speaker 5: was like, I'll send a camera, let's do it. So
- 40:22Speaker 5: if she didn't respond back for a little minute, she
- 40:24Speaker 5: was like, how to heck this girl?
- 40:24Speaker 1: Get my number? But she finally was like down.
- 40:28Speaker 5: So we ran it to her outside of the Breakfast
- 40:30Speaker 5: Club studios and she talked about leaving blah blah blah blah.
- 40:33Speaker 5: And in the midst of me letting her know like
- 40:35Speaker 5: when the interview with air or whatever, she was like yeah,
- 40:38Speaker 5: like you know, cause I was trying to get a
- 40:39Speaker 5: follow up story so that the next story was well,
- 40:42Speaker 5: what is the plan? Like how are you guys going
- 40:45Speaker 5: to fill the seat? Is it going to rotate? Who
- 40:47Speaker 5: is the guest host?
- 40:48Speaker 1: Do you know? So I'm trying to get a follow
- 40:49Speaker 1: up story.
- 40:50Speaker 5: So as she's responding on just asking all these questions,
- 40:53Speaker 5: and she was like, girl, they really don't know what
- 40:55Speaker 5: they're about to do. And I was like, there's no way,
- 41:00Speaker 5: like it's the breakfast club, Like.
- 41:01Speaker 1: It's no way.
- 41:02Speaker 5: They don't know what, Like, they don't know what they're
- 41:03Speaker 5: about to do. So I'm pushing back and I'm like,
- 41:06Speaker 5: so the chair is just going to be open? Can
- 41:08Speaker 5: I do a story that the chair is going to
- 41:09Speaker 5: be open? They'll figure out a later date with the
- 41:10Speaker 5: timeline looks like, and she was like, there's really nothing
- 41:13Speaker 5: I can tell you, like I don't know what's about
- 41:15Speaker 5: to happen. And I was like, well, shoot, if y'all
- 41:17Speaker 5: don't know, let me throw my hat in the ring.
- 41:19Speaker 5: And she was like, I mean you can, like anybody can.
- 41:22Speaker 5: I was like, they don't just want celebrities, and she
- 41:24Speaker 5: was like, are you asking for the story?
- 41:26Speaker 1: You fret?
- 41:27Speaker 5: And I was like, no, this is off the record,
- 41:28Speaker 5: Like they don't want just celebrities and she was like,
- 41:31Speaker 5: I don't think right now there's a definite answer to that,
- 41:34Speaker 5: Like you know, I think they want whatever's going to
- 41:36Speaker 5: make sense for the room and for the chemistry. So
- 41:38Speaker 5: I don't really know, you know, what the original plan
- 41:41Speaker 5: or anything was. I didn't really know her from a candaign,
- 41:44Speaker 5: so I asked her, like, can I send you my
- 41:45Speaker 5: resume at my real? She was like yeah, So I
- 41:47Speaker 5: send it to her a couple of times, and then
- 41:49Speaker 5: I just started anybody I knew that it booked a client,
- 41:54Speaker 5: like cause I knew a lot of managers and publicists
- 41:56Speaker 5: from TMZ. So if you had a client on the
- 41:58Speaker 5: Breakfast Club, if I saw Arla ma or and Be
- 42:00Speaker 5: followed you or any type of relationship. And then Van
- 42:03Speaker 5: was in the newsroom too, so I was getting well
- 42:06Speaker 5: he wasn't to a certain point and that he wasn't anymore.
- 42:08Speaker 5: But I was getting anybody I knew to send my resume,
- 42:11Speaker 5: my real to them, over and over and over and
- 42:14Speaker 5: over again, so because I was like, they don't know me,
- 42:16Speaker 5: so I at least they'll know, like, Yo, this girl keep
- 42:18Speaker 5: getting people to send stuff, like how she keep doing this?
- 42:21Speaker 5: And then one day I think it was it was
- 42:24Speaker 5: the I think it was Beatot. I got Beatot from
- 42:27Speaker 5: a formerly red Radar to send my stuff too, and
- 42:32Speaker 5: he sent me a screenshot back. And I think Charlamagne
- 42:34Speaker 5: was like he had tellor hre Eddie Eddie F. And
- 42:37Speaker 5: I'm like, who's Eddie F. So then, but I remember
- 42:40Speaker 5: listening to the radio and I remember hearing Eddief's name
- 42:43Speaker 5: on the like I used to Yeah. So I'm like, EDDIEYF.
- 42:46Speaker 5: That name sounds familiar. And I'm like, no, can't be
- 42:50Speaker 5: the Eddief that they used to talk about on the
- 42:51Speaker 5: radio on Philly, Like he's in New York. I never
- 42:53Speaker 5: thought like he could leave a job and go to
- 42:55Speaker 5: another one, or leave a station and go to another one.
- 42:57Speaker 5: So I had my manager. I hit her and I
- 43:00Speaker 5: was like, Yo, we need to get to Eddie F.
- 43:01Speaker 5: Whoever this is, we need to get to him. I
- 43:03Speaker 5: looked him up.
- 43:04Speaker 1: I found this picture.
- 43:05Speaker 5: I was like, if we can't find an email or phone,
- 43:07Speaker 5: I'm going to go to the station and just wait
- 43:08Speaker 5: outside and like make him talk to me and at
- 43:10Speaker 5: least get a contact. So she was like, wait, wait, wait,
- 43:12Speaker 5: before you do that. She was like, let me reach
- 43:14Speaker 5: out to a friend who I know that works like
- 43:17Speaker 5: in entertainment. One of her friends works with the show
- 43:20Speaker 5: and that show had a couple guests that they had booked.
- 43:22Speaker 1: So they gave us an email.
- 43:25Speaker 5: Uh, we blew his email up, didn't respond nor response,
- 43:28Speaker 5: and then we got the friend to reach out and call.
- 43:30Speaker 1: So Eddie was like, okay, I'll meet with her. Came
- 43:34Speaker 1: met with him.
- 43:34Speaker 5: We sat and talked for about an hour or two,
- 43:37Speaker 5: and he was like, you know, if the guys are
- 43:38Speaker 5: open to it, they don't know you, but if they're
- 43:40Speaker 5: open to it, I'll let you do a day or
- 43:42Speaker 5: a couple of days guest hosting.
- 43:43Speaker 1: So I'm like, all right.
- 43:45Speaker 5: Dates kept changing, days kept changing, went from three days
- 43:48Speaker 5: to two days to one day, and then like at
- 43:50Speaker 5: the same time, I was back home because like there
- 43:53Speaker 5: was a lot of medical stuff happening with my mom
- 43:54Speaker 5: and my grandma. So I was just in Delaware, like
- 43:57Speaker 5: just being you know, granddaughter, daughter caretaker. I opened up
- 44:00Speaker 5: an event space, so I was just using that space
- 44:02Speaker 5: to do as much as I could because I took
- 44:05Speaker 5: a step away from TMZ for some time, and when
- 44:09Speaker 5: they finally said yes and gave me a date, I
- 44:11Speaker 5: had to I remember having to go back to LA
- 44:14Speaker 5: and my mom had to come with me because she
- 44:15Speaker 5: couldn't be at home by herself at the time, and
- 44:19Speaker 5: she was miserable.
- 44:19Speaker 1: She didn't want to be there.
- 44:21Speaker 5: I really knew like I had outgrown TMZ, but I
- 44:23Speaker 5: didn't understand what that meant and where I was going
- 44:25Speaker 5: to go next.
- 44:26Speaker 1: And then they were like, we got a date for
- 44:28Speaker 1: the guest host thing.
- 44:29Speaker 5: So I was like, okay, I could just leave my
- 44:32Speaker 5: job and tell the world I left my job on
- 44:35Speaker 5: the Breakfast Club and maybe I'll get another job. Like
- 44:37Speaker 5: That's how I was thinking about it. And then Harvey
- 44:40Speaker 5: was like, no, you can't do because I also, on
- 44:43Speaker 5: the other hand, was like I could also just I
- 44:45Speaker 5: was supposed to launch a podcast with TMZ. I was like,
- 44:47Speaker 5: I could launch that podcast here, go on to the
- 44:49Speaker 5: Breakfast Club to promote it, give the podcast a little
- 44:52Speaker 5: bit more time, see if it garners anything, and if
- 44:54Speaker 5: it doesn't, then I can step away. Every sign he
- 44:57Speaker 5: was like, no, you can't do the Breakfast Club. I
- 45:00Speaker 5: was like why and he was like, you know, I
- 45:01Speaker 5: just got it. He was just like, I got to
- 45:03Speaker 5: think about my brand and I don't know what that
- 45:04Speaker 5: room is going to be like. And at right now,
- 45:07Speaker 5: people people know you for I mean, if they do
- 45:10Speaker 5: know you, they know you because you work here, and
- 45:13Speaker 5: I just can't know, Like you just can't. And I
- 45:16Speaker 5: was like well, he was like he had heard that
- 45:18Speaker 5: Charlemagne had called him a racist or something. At one point,
- 45:21Speaker 5: it was just like a bunch of stuff. It was mentioning,
- 45:24Speaker 5: and I was in that moment. I was like, if
- 45:26Speaker 5: you stay here, you're always just going to be the
- 45:28Speaker 5: girl at TMC. Literally, And I've been sitting on my
- 45:32Speaker 5: resignation letter for some months because it was just a
- 45:34Speaker 5: lot going on with my mom and my family. I
- 45:36Speaker 5: felt like my life pulling me back to the East Coast.
- 45:40Speaker 5: But I was like, what am I gonna do for work? Like,
- 45:42Speaker 5: what's about to happen. I've been in LA for like
- 45:43Speaker 5: eight years now. I finally felt like I was kind
- 45:46Speaker 5: of feeling like home and getting a little settled. I
- 45:48Speaker 5: think I was just getting comfortable in the fact that,
- 45:50Speaker 5: like it was like, well, what else I'm gonna do?
- 45:52Speaker 5: So I might as well get comfortable, stay here. See
- 45:54Speaker 5: what this job won't give me, See what it's gonna do.
- 45:56Speaker 5: Finally accepted that from myself, and then a big shape
- 46:00Speaker 5: like life and God just was like, nah, we're not
- 46:02Speaker 5: gonna do that.
- 46:03Speaker 1: So one day I.
- 46:04Speaker 5: Just woke up and I was like, got this resignation
- 46:07Speaker 5: letter ready, He's been here for some months. I'm gonna
- 46:08Speaker 5: send it today, And I sent it and then I
- 46:11Speaker 5: didn't tell so I'd already booked the day. They gave
- 46:14Speaker 5: me one day to guess host Breakfast Club because I
- 46:16Speaker 5: think they wanted to just see if I'd been fit
- 46:18Speaker 5: in the room, right, well, yeah, and if you knew
- 46:20Speaker 5: how to flow, yeah, And I booked that day for sure.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Didn't tell them I was leaving TMZ.
- 46:25Speaker 5: I knew TMZ wasn't gonna like make an announcement or nothing,
- 46:28Speaker 5: like you're not that star of that show, Like they
- 46:30Speaker 5: don't care about Harvey.
- 46:31Speaker 1: So I was like, I'd be cool.
- 46:33Speaker 5: So like probably like a week maybe four days after
- 46:35Speaker 5: that was my guest hosting day on the Breakfast Club
- 46:38Speaker 5: and I came in and Envy was like the first
- 46:41Speaker 5: I met one of the producers. First sim Samana, and
- 46:44Speaker 5: then Mvy was the first person I met of like
- 46:47Speaker 5: the talent.
- 46:48Speaker 1: And he was like, yeah, so how do you want
- 46:49Speaker 1: me to introduce you?
- 46:50Speaker 5: You know, Laura Laro's a senior news producer at TMZ,
- 46:53Speaker 5: and I was like, Laura la Rose are formally senior
- 46:55Speaker 5: news producer.
- 46:56Speaker 1: He was like, wait, they said you worked at TMZ
- 46:59Speaker 1: And I was like I did.
- 47:00Speaker 5: He was like, as of, like when you don't, I
- 47:03Speaker 5: was like, as of like three days ago, and he
- 47:05Speaker 5: was like, what happened?
- 47:06Speaker 1: You want to talk about it?
- 47:07Speaker 5: I was like sure, and so we got on air
- 47:10Speaker 5: and we talked about it and it just went crazy,
- 47:12Speaker 5: like it was so crazy.
- 47:13Speaker 1: I was like, oh, okay, that wasn't sometimes we don't know,
- 47:17Speaker 1: like no, just you had no idea.
- 47:19Speaker 5: And I had pat clothes for the rest of the
- 47:21Speaker 5: week because I was like, I'm already going to be
- 47:23Speaker 5: in New York, my mom here with me, like we
- 47:24Speaker 5: were coming back and forth because our doctors are up
- 47:26Speaker 5: here anyway. So I was like, you know, we'll just
- 47:28Speaker 5: figure some stuff out to do, or maybe they'll ask
- 47:30Speaker 5: me to stay for the rest of the week. I
- 47:32Speaker 5: was leaving and Charlotmane was like, yo, Eddie, who we
- 47:35Speaker 5: got for the rest of the week. And he was like,
- 47:36Speaker 5: you went back to Delaware And I was like yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 5: He was like, you don't want to stay for the
- 47:38Speaker 5: rest of the week. I was like, let me see
- 47:40Speaker 5: if I have clothes, and I was like yes. I
- 47:43Speaker 5: was to day no when I had clothes in the
- 47:45Speaker 5: car literally right outside because I had checked out of
- 47:47Speaker 5: my hotel that morning.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Wow.
- 47:49Speaker 5: So I checked out of my hotel that morning, got
- 47:51Speaker 5: my mom breakfast. She literally waited when I did this show.
- 47:54Speaker 5: The first time myself was in the car. We was
- 47:56Speaker 5: gonna get on highway and go back to Delaware. I
- 47:58Speaker 5: went down stairsday. I was like, yeah, we gotta get
- 47:59Speaker 5: a hold her room for like a couple more days.
- 48:01Speaker 5: She was like fine, and I was like, they want
- 48:03Speaker 5: me to do more days?
- 48:04Speaker 1: She was like okay. So we were just bro. We
- 48:07Speaker 1: was rocking out for like a minute, just doing that
- 48:10Speaker 1: like over and over.
- 48:11Speaker 2: So I'm watching right because I think I've been part
- 48:15Speaker 2: of the process from the beginning. I've heard all of
- 48:18Speaker 2: these Like I feel like I've invested because I've always
- 48:21Speaker 2: when I first sew Laurence, She's gonna she's got to
- 48:25Speaker 2: be on the breakfast. So I've watched like the growth process,
- 48:31Speaker 2: you know. And then like we had just on here
- 48:34Speaker 2: a few weeks ago when we was talking about that
- 48:36Speaker 2: situation with y'all, and so I see it looks like
- 48:39Speaker 2: the chemistry has just evolved and it's like more like
- 48:42Speaker 2: brother than insist and everything.
- 48:44Speaker 3: What was that period like in that time for you?
- 48:47Speaker 5: It was really what, Yes, it was like you can't
- 48:50Speaker 5: because you're the new girl.
- 48:53Speaker 1: You can't. It's like you can't.
- 48:55Speaker 5: Do too much because it's like you don't want to
- 48:59Speaker 5: come off where people are like, I don't know. It
- 49:01Speaker 5: was like I'm in a circle, like I'm in a box,
- 49:03Speaker 5: and I'm like running up a wall over here. You
- 49:05Speaker 5: can't do that, though, because you're gonna this might rub
- 49:07Speaker 5: this person roll and then boom, this might rub this
- 49:09Speaker 5: person roll and then boom, this might rub just the
- 49:11Speaker 5: wrong way. Then you're sitting in the middle of the
- 49:13Speaker 5: box and everybody upset anyway. So it's like I was
- 49:15Speaker 5: trying to figure out, like I still got to do
- 49:18Speaker 5: what I know how to do and not feel bad
- 49:21Speaker 5: for doing it. But at the same time, there's a
- 49:23Speaker 5: lot of things going on that I have no control over,
- 49:26Speaker 5: nor do I have a permanent situation in this box myself.
- 49:29Speaker 5: Any day somebody can come in here and be like, yo,
- 49:30Speaker 5: this box alone, this person you gotta go. I did
- 49:32Speaker 5: no contract.
- 49:33Speaker 1: I didn't have any of that.
- 49:34Speaker 5: So it's like in real time, I'm auditioning for the world.
- 49:37Speaker 5: I'm auditioning for powers that be at the station. Because
- 49:41Speaker 5: if there was a job and we had began talking
- 49:43Speaker 5: about a producer role off camera.
- 49:45Speaker 1: I just needed money to pay my rent.
- 49:47Speaker 5: So I was like, even if I'm not gonna be
- 49:49Speaker 5: on camera, I know I can find my way to
- 49:51Speaker 5: a camera. And to be honest with you, I was
- 49:53Speaker 5: more focused on building my own brand on social. I
- 49:57Speaker 5: knew that was like two and a half years ago.
- 50:00Speaker 5: When I left TMZ, I was like, what is missing?
- 50:03Speaker 5: And I was like, right now, if you look around,
- 50:06Speaker 5: you know the only people that are driving news, especially
- 50:08Speaker 5: in our space on social was like Academics, shade Room,
- 50:11Speaker 5: Hollywood Unlocked, but I felt like Hollywood a locked, shade room, Well,
- 50:14Speaker 5: Hollywood a locked. Jason Lee has always been a personality there,
- 50:17Speaker 5: but like Hollywood Neighborhood Talk, shade Room, Ball Alert, like
- 50:21Speaker 5: a lot of the places out they didn't have personalities.
- 50:24Speaker 1: And then I was looking at like so it's like, Okay,
- 50:26Speaker 1: you have Angie.
- 50:28Speaker 5: Martinez, you have Wendy Williams, you have people miss Info like,
- 50:32Speaker 5: you have these people that like and then Karen Sibyl
- 50:34Speaker 5: at one point was even doing her website with new stuff.
- 50:37Speaker 5: You have people that like built brands around them being
- 50:40Speaker 5: the brand, and then I'm like, who the like on it?
- 50:44Speaker 5: Online right now, there isn't really a lot of that
- 50:47Speaker 5: per se, and if there is, there's not one prominent
- 50:50Speaker 5: place you point to. So I was like, I want
- 50:53Speaker 5: to build the place, Like that was my goal when
- 50:55Speaker 5: I left. I was like, I want to build that place.
- 50:57Speaker 5: And if I do get another job work for somebody,
- 51:00Speaker 5: I wanted to be a place that like will support that.
- 51:03Speaker 5: Other than that, I'd rather struggle and figure this out
- 51:06Speaker 5: because you know, like I was fortunate enough to have
- 51:09Speaker 5: like a family that has like set up certain things
- 51:11Speaker 5: where like I could go to Delaware and like figure
- 51:14Speaker 5: some stuff out or you know, throwing it out, Like
- 51:16Speaker 5: I have a following at home, I could throw events.
- 51:18Speaker 5: I could, you know, when I had the event space,
- 51:20Speaker 5: I was living off of just doing events at the
- 51:22Speaker 5: event space for some time. I could move back home
- 51:24Speaker 5: with my mom, and I wasn't ashamed to do any
- 51:26Speaker 5: of that. I was like, I'm gonna do all this
- 51:28Speaker 5: because I know at the end of the day where
- 51:31Speaker 5: it's gonna get me. So I was really just there,
- 51:35Speaker 5: like if nothing else, I'm just here and I'm learning
- 51:39Speaker 5: from the best of the best, Like I've been watching
- 51:41Speaker 5: the Breakfast Club forever, like literally forever, I remember waking
- 51:45Speaker 5: up in the mornings in La or not even waking up.
- 51:47Speaker 5: I would come home cause it'd be like two three
- 51:49Speaker 5: o'clock in the morning. I'll be coming home from part
- 51:51Speaker 5: like the club or like like I had like three
- 51:53Speaker 5: jobs at one point, and I would be applying for
- 51:56Speaker 5: entertainment jobs and listening to the Breakfast Club or like
- 52:00Speaker 5: watching the Breakfast Club per se on like certain like
- 52:02Speaker 5: you know, like you could go to like the website
- 52:04Speaker 5: and listen live. And now I'm here with the opportunity
- 52:08Speaker 5: to be in a room even if I'm not on camera.
- 52:09Speaker 5: I wasn't tripping. I was like, I'll get on camera.
- 52:12Speaker 5: If not here somewhere else, I'll figure that out. I
- 52:14Speaker 5: just need to paycheck right now. And the opportunity itself, and.
- 52:18Speaker 4: The interesting thing about it is that it's like we
- 52:21Speaker 4: always there's always a roadblock. It's like, you know, you
- 52:25Speaker 4: think okay, and then there's a woman here who's dope
- 52:29Speaker 4: in her own right, who's feeling a way, and now
- 52:32Speaker 4: I'm here, and oh boy, here we go.
- 52:35Speaker 1: I just feel like count for that, no, or like.
- 52:37Speaker 5: Honestly, like the Breakfast Club was the closest thing I've
- 52:40Speaker 5: ever come because you know how sometimes too, you set
- 52:42Speaker 5: out to do something and.
- 52:45Speaker 1: It's just you don't really get like.
- 52:46Speaker 5: If your goal is here, you might get here, and
- 52:49Speaker 5: the proximity to it is just so amazing, and you're
- 52:52Speaker 5: you're like, Okay, if I never get here, at least
- 52:54Speaker 5: I got here. The Breakfast Club, to me, and that
- 52:57Speaker 5: opportunity to even just guest host was literally the first
- 53:00Speaker 5: time that I got like right, like this is my
- 53:03Speaker 5: dream and like God is like I used to joke,
- 53:06Speaker 5: like we're all some gonna work at if I leave
- 53:07Speaker 5: tense with my mouth like the Breakfast Club, like I
- 53:10Speaker 5: literally used to Joe, and I'm.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Like, I'm sitting here like this is insane. So I
- 53:15Speaker 1: just knew.
- 53:15Speaker 5: I'm like this is too good to be true, Like
- 53:17Speaker 5: it's no way I'm about to work here, Like I
- 53:19Speaker 5: literally knew it. So that's why when I got the
- 53:21Speaker 5: guest hosting, I did a couple of days, and when
- 53:23Speaker 5: they'd called me back for those couple of days, I
- 53:25Speaker 5: never really thought about it, like I am one hundred
- 53:28Speaker 5: percent no, this is gonna happen. Of course, I was like, yo,
- 53:30Speaker 5: this would be this would make so much sense if
- 53:33Speaker 5: it did.
- 53:34Speaker 1: But I was like it's no where hell.
- 53:35Speaker 5: Like it would just be God would literally be working
- 53:38Speaker 5: over time, and he already working over time in my life.
- 53:41Speaker 1: I know he's tired, like, and so to be there,
- 53:44Speaker 1: I was just like, wait what, Like it's amazing. Yeah.
- 53:49Speaker 4: And then to have like he always provides exactly what
- 53:54Speaker 4: you need when you need it, exactly when you need it.
- 53:56Speaker 1: And so Angie is.
- 53:58Speaker 4: Just upstairs somewhere around the corner, I want to cross
- 54:00Speaker 4: the studio next door, the next door yo who just says.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Wait a minute, we not gonna have this.
- 54:07Speaker 4: We're gonna get everybody in there, lane, We're gonna give
- 54:10Speaker 4: some tips.
- 54:10Speaker 2: We go.
- 54:11Speaker 4: That was crazy together and I can imagine that you
- 54:13Speaker 4: are grateful for her stepping in to say let me.
- 54:17Speaker 5: First time, I was sitting at my desk and I
- 54:18Speaker 5: saw Angie Martinez walking. I literally like the producers at
- 54:23Speaker 5: the show were like laughing. I was like, oh my god,
- 54:26Speaker 5: like she's I could barely don't even speak. So then
- 54:30Speaker 5: we met like a little bit after that, and she
- 54:32Speaker 5: was just after I was their guest hosting when Jessa
- 54:35Speaker 5: alm Attorney leaving. She was just telling me how how
- 54:38Speaker 5: good I was doing. And we had a real conversation
- 54:40Speaker 5: one day. This was before all the esto. We had
- 54:42Speaker 5: a real conversation one day. So oh my interview. When
- 54:45Speaker 5: Chloe Bailey came there the first time and I was
- 54:47Speaker 5: talking to her, I think it was about like burna boy.
- 54:50Speaker 5: And people used to be so mad at me, Like
- 54:52Speaker 5: they used to be like, how dare she asked that question?
- 54:54Speaker 5: Who she thinks she is? She just got here. She
- 54:56Speaker 5: need to learn her place, She needed to simmer down.
- 54:58Speaker 1: She did.
- 54:58Speaker 5: People did not like me on that show for a
- 55:00Speaker 5: very long time. They felt it was like, she talks
- 55:04Speaker 5: too much, she don't know her place. This is not
- 55:06Speaker 5: her show. She's the new girl. Why is she asking
- 55:08Speaker 5: those questions? Why is she so like? It was all
- 55:10Speaker 5: of that, So whenever I would ask something in an interview,
- 55:14Speaker 5: I would know that, Okay, this is gonna go super viral.
- 55:16Speaker 5: So I would just get off the internet because it
- 55:19Speaker 5: used to be so crazy at first, because I wasn't
- 55:21Speaker 5: used to all of that. And that day, I think
- 55:24Speaker 5: the Chloe Bailey stuff was going viral and me and
- 55:27Speaker 5: her sat down and we was having food.
- 55:28Speaker 1: I think it might have been her birthday.
- 55:30Speaker 5: We was having food and just sitting and talking and
- 55:32Speaker 5: she was like, what's your goal?
- 55:35Speaker 1: And I was like, you mean like in the station
- 55:37Speaker 1: or in life.
- 55:38Speaker 5: And I was talking her through it, and she was like,
- 55:40Speaker 5: because you're disrupting a lot right now, and it's been
- 55:43Speaker 5: a very long time since we've seen someone do this
- 55:46Speaker 5: in this way. But I know it's tough because, like
- 55:50Speaker 5: people are, disruption isn't always like calm and fitting and
- 55:54Speaker 5: people hug you through it. It's like you're shaking things,
- 55:57Speaker 5: and there's a lot of pushback, there's a lot of negative,
- 56:00Speaker 5: there's a lot of whatever. And she was like, you know,
- 56:01Speaker 5: I just want you to know what your goal is
- 56:04Speaker 5: and all of that and not get either lost in
- 56:06Speaker 5: it or get so overwhelmed or defeated by it that
- 56:11Speaker 5: you can't handle it anymore. If that is what you
- 56:13Speaker 5: want to do, if you want to be a personality
- 56:16Speaker 5: that isn't afraid to disrupt, there's a lot that comes
- 56:18Speaker 5: with it. So we had had that conversation. So when
- 56:21Speaker 5: all the stuff happened, she was like, why he.
- 56:24Speaker 1: Didn't called me. I was like, what was I going
- 56:25Speaker 1: to say?
- 56:25Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 56:26Speaker 5: I couldn't say nothing to anybody about anything that was
- 56:28Speaker 5: happening because I felt.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Like I came in.
- 56:31Speaker 5: You know, it's like it's already I mean, obviously it
- 56:34Speaker 5: was already like a lot going on. So I'm like, yo,
- 56:37Speaker 5: I don't even want to like unless you were like there.
- 56:39Speaker 5: And another thing too, I think for me, I'm just
- 56:41Speaker 5: really like, I there's a level of loyalty that I
- 56:46Speaker 5: have to people, not just because they have helped me,
- 56:48Speaker 5: but because I know how hard it is to get
- 56:52Speaker 5: to Like I look at Envy and Charlotte Made and
- 56:54Speaker 5: everything that they have, and I'm like, people don't understand
- 56:57Speaker 5: how hard they work and how hard it is to
- 56:59Speaker 5: get to that level. So my whole thing was, I
- 57:02Speaker 5: don't want to say or do anything that makes this
- 57:04Speaker 5: worse because I don't want to be the person messing
- 57:07Speaker 5: up all of this that they've worked for.
- 57:09Speaker 1: So I'm gonna just talk to them.
- 57:11Speaker 4: Meanwhile, especially didn't give a ship because but you're always crazy.
- 57:15Speaker 5: Though behind the scenes they were well, he was like,
- 57:18Speaker 5: you know, he a little stupid exactly. He was a
- 57:21Speaker 5: little like I think with him, he'd just be like,
- 57:24Speaker 5: it's not that nothing, shut up, hushed on Monday, we'd
- 57:30Speaker 5: be family by Friday. And I'm like it got to
- 57:32Speaker 5: a point where I was like, no, this is the radio.
- 57:35Speaker 5: We need to talk like we need to but envy
- 57:38Speaker 5: from the rip. And then eventually Charlamagne was like serious, yeah,
- 57:43Speaker 5: like nah, this ain't something like we just gonna like
- 57:47Speaker 5: gets hurt.
- 57:48Speaker 1: Yeah, but I think I think.
- 57:50Speaker 5: Everybody learning each other in a situation because again, you know,
- 57:54Speaker 5: I'm new in a situation, but their relationship is new
- 57:56Speaker 5: in a situation. So all this disruption with me is
- 57:59Speaker 5: happening while they're learning each other too.
- 58:02Speaker 1: So it was like, that's another reason why I'm good.
- 58:04Speaker 1: It was healthy. It was good. It was healthy.
- 58:06Speaker 2: I'm glad everybody was learning everybody at the same d yes.
- 58:09Speaker 2: But the thing was she felt like this was her spot. Yeah,
- 58:12Speaker 2: you didn't have the right to learn any of it
- 58:14Speaker 2: at all. She just needed to be quiet. Yeah, and
- 58:18Speaker 2: when well you say something, you was like, nah, I'm well,
- 58:21Speaker 2: I'm here and I'm gonna make sure.
- 58:23Speaker 5: No wait, hold on, let me say this too, because
- 58:25Speaker 5: I feel like when people talk about the story, one
- 58:27Speaker 5: thing that never gets talked about is the fact that
- 58:29Speaker 5: I did do that.
- 58:30Speaker 1: For some time. I did be like you know what,
- 58:32Speaker 1: you're right, Like, there.
- 58:33Speaker 5: Was a point in time where like, as I was
- 58:35Speaker 5: a producer I was completely off air. Like when Jess
- 58:37Speaker 5: came back. We had that first day it didn't go well,
- 58:40Speaker 5: like it was not good. And then I was like,
- 58:43Speaker 5: all right, fuck I only I don't want no parts,
- 58:45Speaker 5: like it's not that deep to fall back. Yeah, like
- 58:47Speaker 5: I'm whatever. So I took a week off and then
- 58:50Speaker 5: I came back and.
- 58:52Speaker 1: I was just working as a producer.
- 58:53Speaker 5: So we were like helping build out her segments, like
- 58:56Speaker 5: scripting her segments, helping her better out her segments, like
- 58:59Speaker 5: you know, she tell like she'll say what topics you
- 59:01Speaker 5: want to talk about, we will put it together. That
- 59:03Speaker 5: happened for some time, and I was it was literally
- 59:05Speaker 5: to a point where like you only would hear from
- 59:07Speaker 5: me if she's like, Yo, this is a lot for
- 59:09Speaker 5: me to report, girl, come on in here.
- 59:12Speaker 1: And that's just kind of what it was.
- 59:13Speaker 5: It was like, Yo, you you see Mike, and that's
- 59:15Speaker 5: your role, you playing your producer, and I'm all right here,
- 59:17Speaker 5: I am like.
- 59:18Speaker 4: Butler art his his it's not that serious attitude. Fester's
- 59:24Speaker 4: this kind of stuff because when people start feeling like
- 59:27Speaker 4: they don't know their place with him, like you know, that's.
- 59:29Speaker 5: Not knowing your place in general in a situation where
- 59:32Speaker 5: the roles were still being defined. Yeah, exactly, And that's
- 59:35Speaker 5: what I mean by like every it was so new,
- 59:36Speaker 5: Like so.
- 59:37Speaker 4: A hand position is you wouldn't be here if I
- 59:41Speaker 4: didn't want you to be here.
- 59:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and I you know what's crazy.
- 59:45Speaker 5: One of the things that I learned from him is
- 59:47Speaker 5: that mentality of like, you supposed to be here. That's
- 59:51Speaker 5: why periods like if you hear face like you're supposed
- 59:54Speaker 5: to be here, I think a lot of times I always.
- 59:56Speaker 1: Then don't understand female that I say this to him
- 59:59Speaker 1: all the time. He like, it's not a man or
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: a woman thing.
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: Yes it is, And I'm like, no, first of all,
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: you are fifteen years in this that's number one. So
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: what I can have the space to take up is
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: different than what you could take up. And then secondly,
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: you're a man, so like there are certain ways that
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: I in certain sensitivities that I've learned.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: That's one of the biggest things I've learned.
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: And being at the breakfast club from the just you
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: know me and justice you know learning each other to
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: just in general with interviews, conversations, my outreach, my cold calling.
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: I've had to really learn how to like the person
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: of me how to have there's like a sense of
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: like sensitivity and human that the newsroom doesn't really you
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: don't have time to be all sensitive and human. News
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: is breaking like this and if something go down, everybody
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: hop on it or you fire.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: You gotta go right. And just the way I grew up,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: like in my household, it's.
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: Like, yo, you take too long, something can happen, Like
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: we gotta something going on over there.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: You got to know how to get over here real quick. Yeah.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: So I've always been like like reactionary.
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: So I'm to this day I'm still learning like a
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: slow down girl, Like it's okay, you're a person, be
- 1:01:05Speaker 5: a person, be a little sensitive, you could feel, take
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: you time and stuff happening. Literally to this day where
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, but now that I've been at the
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: breakfast club and working with the group for so long
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: and kind of working with people who are completely different
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: than what I come from workwise, because the newsroom everybody's
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: like me. Everybody's like you call whoever about whatever. Like
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: working with people who are the complete opposite, I've literally learned,
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: Oh I kind of see where that was insensitive or yeah,
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: I could have waited. I didn't have to call you
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: the day that that person died, or like you know,
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: just small things you're.
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: Learning again, You're back to learn it. I mean every
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: other you I am literally you stop to learn.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: I'm in, like I.
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: Say it all the time. I'm in like artists development,
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: like you know, like when the artists. I'm going through
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: that right now, like in like the most major ways
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: of like ways possible, like you're doing this is thank you, but.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: I just want to say for this month, this is
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: my last thing. Five years from that, Like where do
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: you see yourself?
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: Well, brown Gar Grinding is going to be like you know,
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: how you think about Nike. Well, I don't know people
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: still think about that way. But when you think about Nike,
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: you think of everything like top level, highly produced, good quality,
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: good relationships. Brongar Grinding is going to be that of production,
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: and we'll be that across development. We will have talent
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: that we're working with, the managing podcast spaces like storytelling
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: will be the helm of it. And if it don't
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: come through us, you probably won't even be looking for it.
- 1:02:39Speaker 5: Like that's how big of a hole I want to
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: have on this, Like media industry across things not just
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: news personally though, like I'm gonna be a wife, I'll
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: be a mom, I'll be being be able to take
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: a vacation. I feel guilty. Yeah, I think those would
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: be the two things in my show. Like whatever my
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: show will look like with five years from now, it'll
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: be produced by Bronco Grinding. We will be partner with
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: probably whatever the biggest streamer is in the world at
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: that's time to do it. And the biggest part of
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: it is like I want to be in service. Like
- 1:03:10Speaker 5: that's another thing that I learned a lot from the
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: space I'm in right now. Like I really I've always
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: been a person that's like that, but I don't think
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: I really understood how the job I do could be
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: of service to people, because I always felt like, do
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: you really do I really help people by get doing
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: what I'm doing every day? Like this is so like
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: fluff and celebrity and you know whatever, But then you
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: think about like the people that like just mean I
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: got like people that I meet that are just like, hey,
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: can I go to an event with you? And the
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: exposure that that gives them or internships or whatever, Like
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: I really want to have a really strong arm in
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: being of service to people with over the next five years,
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: Like I want my footprint to be like way more
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: than just like what stories has she broken? Or you
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: know what roles or Egot winner, because that's going to
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: be I'm gonna be Egot. But yeah, yeah, I ain't
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: gonna drop no music. I probably would like do like singing.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll figure it out. Ye oh lord.
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: When you think about service, I mean you came from
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: two places that in TMZ and the Breakfast Club, that
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: do it differently, but they focus a lot on news
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: and politics and things of that nature.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Is that a little bit.
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: Outside of how you grew up and how you were
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: raised or is that really comfortable for you? You know,
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: because some people just because you was in entertainment world
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: doesn't mean that you care about like what's going on
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: what political world.
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: At TMZ, the news desk was the news desk. There
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: wasn't like politics. There was and then there was us.
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: It was like us. So like if something is going
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: on in politics, we all have to understand it, we
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: all have to be breaking news around it, we all
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: have to like it wasn't segregated in that way. This
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: is the first job where it's like you could just
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: fully focus on like the entertainment and the celebrity stuff
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: and then if it crosses over into politics. Growing up
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: in my household though, oh yeah, politics is like you
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: don't have a choice. Like my mom, voting is like
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: a family, how happy we all do together exactly. My
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: mom is like she'll call me, I mean, oh my gosh, y'all,
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: y'all know the YouTube channel the might's touched my mom,
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: Like I'd be having to tell her turn them off
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: like that CNN, like she is. Everything in my family
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: is from my mom to like my larger family is
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: very very much like political, but they're also it's like
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: really really black cue. So it's like you got politics,
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: and you have community, and you have and I mean
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: politics on like high high level local level, you know,
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: all of that to being really black at the same time,
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: but also really experiencing things in real life too, so
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: like a lot of the things that people are like
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: fighting for us like oh like we really like lived
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: this for real. So like I understand it a different way.
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: But in my family, you don't really have a choice.
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: Do I do politics or do I not? Like you
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: literally is a part don't Yeah, you don't have a choice,
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: like you have to. My mom's thing is always like,
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: you know, you got to know what's going on in
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: the world, like you you can't let the world do
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: you. You gotta do the world, like you really got to
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: know what's going on, Like you're here, You're not here
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: just to be cute, like you you gotta know what's up.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: So what it shows, It shows that it shows.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: If you pay attention to detail, very detail orientated, everything
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: that you do is like get the details.
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: And they ask you a.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: Question, yeah, and I thought about that, and you go
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: right back and were like, well did you. Oh yeah,
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: I did that too, And I reached out to this person.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: And that's very very intentional. And I just want to say,
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: I want to ask this, this is my last question.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: What is the biggest lesson that you've learned that you
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: like right now the old age you are, like, what
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: is the most important thing you think you've learned over
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: this time?
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: Just to slow down?
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: And I think when people hear that, they're going to
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: think like, oh, she was moving too fast through like
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: work like first of all and work, yes, slow down
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: Because at my life, ass job, everything was like be first,
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: be factual, and there are human area is a real thing.
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: But you know now that it's just me, Like I
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: don't have a research team, I don't have two EPs
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: that sit and know the story and know all the details,
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: can grab something, catch something. So like moving first and
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: factual has not worked for me sometimes, where like I
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: have gotten things wrong and had to go back and
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: correct it or whatever, and I'm like, uh so slow
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: down to that aspect and like really take the time.
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: And sometimes it does make sense to be first. But
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: then I've learned that, like, sometimes it doesn't make sense
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: to be first. It makes sense to have the clarity,
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: and that doesn't always mean you're gonna be first. Sometimes
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: you gotta sit with it. You gotta And that's like
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: in this new space of life, but also just in
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: life personally, slowing down.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: I've learned to try and take more time to do that.
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: I think I've gotten a lot better at like like
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: I won't enter my phone, I won't respond to every text.
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: I'll take, you know, even if it's just a weekend
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: to go home and be with my mom and my grandmother,
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: and we'll literally tell people like no, I'm not coming,
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: i haven't been here. I need to sit down and
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: be with them, and even that that wasn't something that like,
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: you know, I've always been really close with my family,
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: but you don't. You just don't have a concept of time,
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: and you like you just moving, you were hustling, you're
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: trying to figure it out. And now I went through
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: a year of like having no job and just figuring
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: out work and money as it.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Projects will come, But the one thing that stayed consistent
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: was my family.
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: So for me and everything, like I literally remember coming
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: back from LA and being home for the year and
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: it was just like a little small stuff and I'm like, dang,
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: how did I miss that when I was visiting or
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: like my mom would like not remember something. I'm like, oh,
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: she's getting older. But I wouldn't have caught that when
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: I was back and forth, hustling, busting, you know, to LA.
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: And now that things have picked back up, I have
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: that feeling of like I know what it's like to
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: sit still and really take the.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: Time with them.
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: So I feel myself slipping and I'll be like, you
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: gotta slow down, Like Lauren, You've got to slow down
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: because if you're gonna get anywhere, you're trying to get
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: there for a long time.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: Yeah, good time, longevity.
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: You gotta slow down. And Charlomagne will he the main one.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: Don't just read it when I was saying that was him.
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: You gotta read that, like, don't just read the hellline.
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: You gotta because a lot of times I'm like.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Oh, we go through this. We argue every day. Yeah,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: I'm like, I literally.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: Argue with Charlemagne at least three times a day every
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: day between every single day and Teslin. Oh lord lord
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: Jesus Tesling, don't play.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, but but we all are.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: We all learned from one another, right because we listen
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: to one another, even when we totally don't agree, we
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: listen to one another. And I told you before that
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: I know what it feels like to have a Charlemagne
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: in your corner because it has been my situation.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: And I see how he uplifts you. You know, you
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: can see it. It's so clear.
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: He'll be like, hit Lauren, hit Lauren, you know, And
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: he only does that with certain people. And I appreciate
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: him for that because not everyone is out here using
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: their platform to ensure that other black women people help
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: men a lot of times, yeah, but helping other black
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: women is not something not as normal.
- 1:10:09Speaker 5: Not like this, and it's like it's and you don't guy,
- 1:10:12Speaker 5: like you don't have to question like why.
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: Yeah, oh no, no, I never ever thought that. I
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: never felt that with him.
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: I always be like I'll be saying it to him,
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: like you were like it's crazy because he's so not nice,
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: but he is, Like I'd be like, yo, you too nice,
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: like like.
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: It's just genuine. It's just like that's one thing I know.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: I'm know Charlamagne for over twenty something years, right, and
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: he's always been the same way, and his his authenticity
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: is what got him.
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: To where he's at.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: Like, yeah, he's made mistakes, he's done this and that,
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: but it's always been in an authentic role. And I
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: think the path that he's traveled, right, and he's seen
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: them in pitfalls and knowing all the things he had
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: to go through, I think he's very intentional about in
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: spaces for people like you and like to make it
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: even myself, for people like us to be able to
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: thrive in that without having to go through what he had.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: Yeah, but you know how hard it is to be
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: I don't even say how hard, you know how rare
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: it is to see people doing that and be black
- 1:11:16Speaker 5: and the people that they're doing before are actually successful
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: Like I just like this year alone, I've seen success
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: in a lot of different areas that I was working
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: eight nine years at this at a very high like
- 1:11:27Speaker 5: TMZ is like not only are they like you're in
- 1:11:30Speaker 5: LA that's the number one market I'm on daytime and
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: primetime TV.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: I've seen movement and success in my life.
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: And it's last year or two that I never I
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: thought it was gonna take me ten fifteen years to
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: not even just see the success, but even just being
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: the proximity of some of the things that I've been
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: able to be blessed to see that like motivate me
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: and a lot of it is like you know, it's
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: black effect. In the podcast that I do with being
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: at the breakfast club, it's when they like, Yo, we're
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: gonna here come and then I get to see like
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: I'm like.
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: Oh, and you also have some of the best, whether
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: they call themselves mentors or not, because even Envy who
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: isn't he's not as what do you call it, like
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: outside if you will, or Charlomage, I don't even know
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: how you call it because I don't want to diminish
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: his role in any way. He still knows radio very
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: very much. He's smart, he knows radio. And if you
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: just watch how he operates, he keeps a machine moving.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: In that space.
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: Like you know that he is the wheels right, he's
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: turning the show, So you're really learning at the highest level.
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: I think that the energy between.
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: You and Jess is so great, and I am so
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: grateful to God that you did not show up there
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: as the gossip girl who is like, you know, trying
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: to get your licks on, tearing down everybody black, right,
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: like that is just it's good. So it's just good
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: to see you there. You are an incredible example for
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: young black women and older black women like myself because
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: I'm old.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: Who are I am? Who are who are coming up
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: in this space?
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: And we just want to encourage you because the success
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: that you have today, how you said, is moving fast
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: and you're growing. There is moments where you hit walls,
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: you know, and when you hit the walls, it hurts,
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: it's not and it happens to every single person. No
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: one is exempt from those moments where you know you
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: might make a mistake or somebody just put a lie
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: on your name. You just never know what could happen
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: to run you into a wall, and having your head
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: on straight is going to be the thing that helps
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: you to navigate through those times.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: And so you got one. Your head is on. We
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: like you a lot. I'm glad you'll like that. I
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: don't like me. I'm glad you'll like me.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: Like they love you. Jada Pinkin tells the story of
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: how she was There were two young men who treated her.
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: They were talking shit about her on the internet, and
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: you know, she every time you turned around, somebody got
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: something to say. Oh yeah, they turned stories around hit.
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: She ain't even say it turns into that. So these
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: two young men, they had talked so much about her,
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: and they you know, it just was not a good encounter.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: And they ended up at an event and she saw
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: them there. I was like, oh dust them too, Okay, cool, right,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: she's come over here.
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: Let don't ask you for a minute, you know, And
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: she she was going to talk to them and figure
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: out what if the hell is the problem, like y'are
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: always attacking me. And when they when they approached her,
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: they was like, oh shit, like this is really her,
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: Like we're about to have a conversation and she was like,
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: let's take a picture, let's hug each other, like you know,
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: let's be in relationship.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: And they were like, oh my god, we love you.
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: Change the entire energy between them just because she engaged them,
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: you know, she made them feel like I'm accessible and
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: found out that people actually don't hate you at all.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: But if they don't know you and they.
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: Can't touch you and feel you and they can't figure
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: you out, sometimes they're their reaction to you is just
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: to be negative. That's the way some of us have
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: been raised that way too, Exactly. You get attention that way,
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: and meanwhile when they get to know you, it's like.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: Oh you pretty dope. Like actually, I'm a fan of
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: people love you.
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: I don't be saying they say in the story like
- 1:15:17Speaker 5: it's so much ebbs and flows with this, I really don't.
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: I don't hold a lot of steak in a lot
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: of like there's not a lot of stocking.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: What people have to say, Yeah, like it's there, and.
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: I know it's there, and every now and then like
- 1:15:29Speaker 5: I'll be like hold on, wait what But then I'm
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: like tomorrow's another day. And I've had to teach myself
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: that because the Breakfast Club and the way that their
- 1:15:37Speaker 5: audience is so vast and cling to you.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: They will let you know when you're not having a
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: good day, but then they'll let you know when you're
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: having a good day. So it's like so up and down.
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: So if you I was like on this emotional roller
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: coaster for like four or five months, and I was like, oh,
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: you can't do this to yourself or you're going to
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: be depressed. Like you gotta like you gotta have a
- 1:15:56Speaker 5: sense of like, no matter how bad my day is,
- 1:15:59Speaker 5: I'm not going below this level. Or no matter how
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: good the day is, girl, get up tomorrow. You gotta
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: do this again tomorrow.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Don't get don't don't and show up and be cute.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: I'm party too much cause you have the good day
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: to day.
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: You gotta do this four more times this week and
- 1:16:10Speaker 5: one hundred more times next week and next month and
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: next year, steadfast.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: Like you know, long time, not a good time, Laura
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: La Rossa.
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: We appreciate it.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: Thank y'all, Thank y'all. I'm so happy for you.
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: I mean, I'll tell you that, yeah you do so
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: you already know, and we are always cheering you on
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: and whatever we could do to help you along your path.
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: You know, you're in the breakfast club, so it's a
- 1:16:33Speaker 4: little different you up here with the big dog big dogs.
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: Whatever we could do to help you along your path,
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: you just say the word and we're here.
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate y'all. I really do thanks.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: It's so crazy when when you were doing I don't
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: think I ever told you this, but when all the
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: like march Is stuff was happening and you were doing
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: that stuff in Minneapolis.
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: Literally I used to I didn't know you.
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: Then, but we used to cover you a lot at
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: TMZ and we I did a conversation I think it
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: was with Neo. I want to say either it was
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: Neo or Big Ticket, very random mix, but one of
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: the two.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: It was with somebody.
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: It was a celebrity there and everybody was on those
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: Instagram lives like save the World. And they asked me
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: on the live like, who do you think is like
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: the next leader that's going to rise up that could
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: really like push us? And I was like Timyka Mallory,
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: like you've always been like one of my favorite activists.
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: Like if I had to be a flagirl activist, I
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: don't know how you do it all the time, but
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: you are.
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: It's a lot of us that are.
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: Like, yeah, but you know, the support that I received
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: from all the people, all the people you talk about
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: big ticket, like, that's somebody who has used every single
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: platform he's had to help bring awareness to whatever I'm doing. Yeah,
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: And I had to learn to focus on those people
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: and less on the roadblocks because there's so many roadblocks.
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: It's so many hats, so many people are trying to
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: stop you, so many people trying to make you feel
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: like what you do is not important. But there's so
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: many other people who are trying to help us push
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: our message and get our you know, get whatever we're
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: trying to work, whatever we're working on out there. And
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: I just have had to zoom in on that narrowing
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: on the positive because the negative is loud as hell.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: It is real people though, too. That's what I think.
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: So yes, but I'm saying there's a lot of like
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: activists that like, it's like, where are you even from?
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: What's your life? You want to go on another law?
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Are you cut from? You know what I mean?
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: Like, I think it's different when it's like you could
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: feel the cloth somebody is cut from and then like
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: y'all also out here trying to like make the world right.
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: Which will we do this because we have no choice.
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: Other people are doing it. They have chosen to do
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: it for a particular benefit that they receive, whether it
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: be them getting attention for it.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: It's sometimes and sometimes people it's a job.
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: It's a litter real job to get out there, you know,
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: start your organization or whatever and be an advocate. And
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: I'm not saying all of that is bad, but in
- 1:18:49Speaker 4: our situation, in our lives, our children's lives, our families
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: literally depend on the work that we do every day,
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: and we know that.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: Because we've been called.
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: When you've been called to do something, it's very different
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: than making a choice that, oh, I'm just gonna go
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: be an advocate.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: That's good.
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: But when God says this is what you have to do,
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: no matter where you run, you.
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: Can't get away. That's what you tell yourself on dark days.
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: Yes, I'm called. I know I'm called because I don't
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: want to have nothing to do with this. I don't
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: want to be in this. I don't want to be
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: in the work that I'm in every day. I want
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: the world to get better, where I could go off
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: and fulfill the other dreams. I have all kinds of
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: other things that I want to do and other ways
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: that I know I could show up in the world.
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: But every time I try to turn it off, whatever happens.
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: It's like I'm in it and then don't even realize it.
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: It's like you know, when you cook in.
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: You might not have made spaghetti for a long time,
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: but as soon as you get the cook in and
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: you'll be like, oh, yeah, I got to go get
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: and I need it a little. It's just becomes so
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: natural to you. This is where I'm supposed to be,
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: and so you know I'm doing it. But I hope
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: one day. I pray that one day we will be
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: in a situ situation where, like I see the world
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: changing so much right now, and what is giving me
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: a lot of hope is that every time there's any
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: positive change, you got to go through the negative parts
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: of it, like there's no way to it but through it.
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: And so perhaps this.
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: Trump and all the things that's happening today, it is
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: a part of the process that's going to help a
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: new set of leaders and vision and courage emerge. So
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: that's that's yeah, that's the that's the good thing about it.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: But anyway we've been talking. You appreciate y'all. We appreciate y'all.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: Yes, you did good and Brown Girl.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: Grind Yes, absolutely much love and shout out to La
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: and the rules of the beautiful interview. Just got to
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: dive in and just get to know some things. You
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: don't really know what a person struggle is and you
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: don't know what their plight is. Like we said during
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: the interview, a lot of people thought she was just
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: like an overnight success just paying attention. I knew that
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: wasn't true. And to hear her just give a test
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: only of her travels, you know, I would I would
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: employ you to go to her YouTube page and like
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: she said, and watch some of.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: Her journey so you can understand.
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: What she went through. But dope interview and I think
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: it's a lot of stuff on the.
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: Horizon for Yeah, she she she is, as she said.
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: Charlotmage often tells her she's exactly where she's supposed to be.
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: And you know, I think she she talks about her
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: family life, which is important. We shape so much about
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: who our children become, and we've talked about this before,
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: just that it's you know, your your especially your mother.
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: And I only say especially your mother, because a lot
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: of people end up spending the most most of their
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: time with their mothers, not because the father is a
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: deadbeat on any of that, but a lot of times
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: dads are out of the household a lot working, you know,
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: doing what they can to make the household run, and
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: mothers fulfill a rightful role in many cases to nurture
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: and be there, damn there every day. I'm not saying
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: that's always the case, so y'all don't got to come
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: for me, but that's the case a lot of times,
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: right And if your mom lacks a level of consciousness
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: it is, it's very difficult to overcome that unless you're
- 1:22:22Speaker 4: intentional about it. And it's obvious that Laura Larossa's mother
- 1:22:27Speaker 4: has been an incredible example for her in her life.
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: And so you know, the fruit is, you know, the
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: fruit will always expose the tree, always always expose the tree.
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: Even if you're so much better than what you come from,
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: you can still see, Oh, this person really worked hard
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: to overcome the toxicity of however they grew up.
