- 0:16everyday life from NFL all pro Carl Lee. Welcome to Overtime. Hello,
- 0:23ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee, and this is our overtime,
- 0:26and I have my two delegates still here with me, and we're going to
- 0:32talk a little bit about Marshall basketball and coach Jackson, their new coach who
- 0:41also I guess coached at West Virginia State then played at Marshall as well.
- 0:48So I'll take from the Huntington native, tell us, how does how does
- 0:55Huntington feel in this transition, because it was a little it was a little
- 1:00touch. It was I mean, you had a big name coach that yeah,
- 1:03they kind of you know, had to had to walk away that that
- 1:07seemed to be a little bit of a tough situation. So I'll I will
- 1:11start off the same first and foremost, regardless of any social gas he might
- 1:18have made. Addressing the first comment, I think coach Huggins is a great
- 1:23basketball coach. But I also think no, he was talking about Huggins being
- 1:30hired. Is that who you were talking about? No, Jackson and then
- 1:34and then the coach that was I thought you were referencing that people were upset
- 1:38that we didn't give Huggins a look. Oh no, no, no,
- 1:41no, okay, no, is that an issue? Though it's not an
- 1:44issue I just heard you know everyone. Well, let me just say this.
- 1:49I can't I can't imagine. Yeah, I don't think. I can't
- 1:53imagine him doing that. And a W b U coach that has that hit,
- 2:00Oh, who's gonna do that? You think? So what WOW mean
- 2:06about think about his departure in Morgantown, Well, he would love to have
- 2:10the opportunity to go to the other in state school. I had to build
- 2:15them up and to say, look what I'm doing. Okay, but but
- 2:21where I was going, I'm gonna go ahead. But where I was going
- 2:23with that is we passed on Huggins before. So if anybody was upset,
- 2:27then we didn't give him opportunity. They should have been upset years ago when
- 2:30we didn't get him the opportunity because we had we would have had I'm almost
- 2:35for certain we could have had Michael Beasley, Bill Walker, maybe even Patrick
- 2:39Passon OJM. We would have won a national championship in Huntington for sure.
- 2:44Now, I like all my coaches, right, I'm a huge fan of
- 2:47of of of Donnie Jones. I thought he was super good for the program,
- 2:53obviously a coach dantoni fan and some others. But I wanted to get
- 2:58the record straight. Her people are like, oh, why didn't we look
- 3:00at Huggins. I saw a couple of means, Well, you should have
- 3:02been mad back then because he delivered a national championship if we had hired him
- 3:07back then. But I digress. I think that Corny is the right hire
- 3:13at the right time. I also think that it's a seamless transition because he's
- 3:19one of d'antoni's guys. And so if there's any supporters in my city of
- 3:24Huntington of D'Antoni, whether you get a double down for Corny because this is
- 3:29what coach Dan wanted, right. So so I don't you know, I
- 3:30would find it hard to believe if there would be any waffling from any D'Antoni
- 3:36supporters to to not support Corny but from a basketball iqis very very sharp.
- 3:43I think that he's going to be run a tight ship and have some upgrades
- 3:50in recruiting. You know, from a basketball standpoint, I think d'antoni's a
- 3:53really good coach. Now some people might disagree with me there, but I
- 3:57just think with Corny at the helm, and I'm sure he's gonna have Adam
- 4:00Williams, who's a Canall County kid, help him do a lot of the
- 4:04heavy lifting with the recruiting, and I think it's it's just going to be
- 4:10really good. I really do. Is it's part of this too, is
- 4:15could the could this be part of age and the ability to go out and
- 4:24relate if that's such, If that's the right word to relate to the recruits
- 4:31for today, is coach Jackson? Would he be better at that than Dan
- 4:38Tony would at fifth point? I think he's going to take a different approach
- 4:42and I think that's going to yield some high dividends. Yeah, I think
- 4:45it's a I think it's a new way of recruiting now. I think,
- 4:50you know, going into high school kids living room and doing the whole sales
- 4:55pitch. That's not necessarily what's happening now, Like now you have to be
- 4:59a little more sophisticated where you're actually dipping in that transfer portal and you're finding
- 5:03those veterans and having the right mix of veterans and freshmen to sort of to
- 5:11get a good balance like what Yukon Hurley's doing in Yukon So and you said
- 5:18something earlier on the show before, you were talking about, you know,
- 5:26building that structure. That chemistry is about keeping those same guys all together.
- 5:31But in this situation, you're saying, he's gonna have to go out and
- 5:34maybe get that group. I think, or is that group? That group?
- 5:41They're already So we gotta have some more Jimmies and Joe's okay, we
- 5:46definitely gotta have more depth coming off the bench. I just think just taking
- 5:50a fresh look at at how we recruit uh and and the type of kid
- 5:56that we're recruiting to be able to compete in the Sun Belt. I think
- 5:59the Sun Belt is vastly similar to Conference USA. You've got to have some,
- 6:03you know, really strong athletes that know the game. But you know,
- 6:08you know, historically, especially when we were in Conference USA, we
- 6:11did really good at having a good mix of high school kids and JUCO kids
- 6:15playing at a high level. You know, if you look at the division,
- 6:18one you know, sort of recipe right now is to have you a
- 6:23start or two, get you in the transfer portal, but also get you
- 6:26some really good d two kids. And I think that Corny with his staff
- 6:31is going to be able to capture that. But I also cost some people
- 6:34that it might not be overnight, and so we should extend him the same
- 6:39patients that we would any other coach. And I think too when you could
- 6:44you mentioned age, I think now you're in a position as a coach where
- 6:47it's twenty four hour, three sixty five recruiting because, for example, if
- 6:53Marshall did get that freshman or that maybe they got somebody who just transferred in
- 6:57and who had a year under their belt and that kid turned out to be
- 7:00an absolute stud and you know, maybe he was some conference player of the
- 7:03year, got him to the tournament. If that kid wants to actually stay
- 7:06in college, he may be looking for a bigger and better opportunity. So
- 7:11you're constantly recruiting now, whether it's JUCO transfer portal or you know, high
- 7:16school. So it's it's a different level now, gonna say commitment. But
- 7:19it's a different job now than what it was. Well, yeah, because
- 7:23you got at any given day, you've got somebody new in the coming and
- 7:27going. Yes, yes, And I think but one of the one of
- 7:30the concerns that I have about one of the concerns I have about the portal
- 7:36is the guy who the guy who enters the portal and the guy that I
- 7:42pull from the portal. My fear is him heading back to the portal like
- 7:46the most you know, it's not what I want. He's heading back to
- 7:51the portal. That is what it is. And I think you just got
- 7:55to be prepared for that. I mean, you don't think you I mean,
- 7:58you can't overthink that. Well, well a situation with you, Yeah,
- 8:05it just it just is, it's just it's it's just because I can't.
- 8:11I've never I was in in an era where like when you were on
- 8:16a team, like like you were on that team. I said, I
- 8:22swore I was gonna like I was gonna retire a biking literally the next season
- 8:30that because I was only gonna play one more season and I was going to
- 8:33retire and I was gonna like, you know, cool, I played my
- 8:35entire career for the Vikings and I'm gonna retire from it, lo and behold,
- 8:41they end up cutting me. I ended up going to the Saints.
- 8:46And I knew I only had you know, well, I didn't really know,
- 8:48but I found out I only had one more season left in the body.
- 8:52But but and I hated the idea of, you know, I appreciate
- 8:58the Ats and you know, Jim Moore and all that kind of stuff,
- 9:01but I would have loved to have played my entire career for the Vikings and
- 9:05and left from there. So I see, like a loyalty kind of a
- 9:11thing is my structure. So I get that. And and and being a
- 9:16little bit, you know, a little bit younger than you and hollis all
- 9:20right, but neither here nor there. I totally get that era of loyalty.
- 9:26And I, you know, call myself a very old school. However,
- 9:31I would challenge you that do you think your line of thinking would be
- 9:35the same if you were in a era right now where the financial opportunities are
- 9:41far greater than what they used to be. And I think that has led
- 9:46to some of the decision making amongst athletes. Uh and and and sort of
- 9:54saying Hey, you know, you know I have I have learned through the
- 9:58greats, Yeah, that you have a finite time to play this game and
- 10:03to capture an amazing opportunity. From a wealth standpoint, I am going to
- 10:09do what I need to do. And we are also on the heels of
- 10:13a lot of things that's happened in society that from the top one could argue
- 10:20that maybe they're in it for themselves, which we didn't have as much media
- 10:24back then. And there's been a lot of situations I say I over the
- 10:28past five years. We don't have the time to go through all of them,
- 10:31but I think we know what we're talking about from an ownership standpoint versus
- 10:35the player. There might be a a little bit more education out there.
- 10:41Then again, you know, while I do want to be loyal, I
- 10:45do understand that this man that cuts my check is all about his bottom line.
- 10:48So it might be sort of foolish in me to not at least recognize
- 10:54my bottom line and maybe another opportunity outside of a financial aspect could lie somewhere
- 11:00else. You've hit the nail on the head. I mean, I was
- 11:03listening to some comments Nick Saban was saying, and I was totally disgusted by
- 11:07what he was saying, as though, like these kids shouldn't be able to
- 11:13cash in on their nil and their you know, athletic prowess, because if
- 11:18we look at the transfer portal, you look at NIL, you look at
- 11:22the problem, particularly with the men's side of college athletics football basketball specifically,
- 11:26this was done by the NC DOUBLEA. They could have handled this. I
- 11:31mean, if it's twenty twenty four now, so prior to nil, if
- 11:33you're talking, I would say five years ago, if you'ld have gave these
- 11:37kids twenty five hundred bucks a month two thousand that had been straightened, they
- 11:43wouldn't have been complaining. You wouldn't have heard a peep. We wouldn't have
- 11:46been here now. And I think that you could have even quashed even used
- 11:50that his levers to quash the whole transfer thing. So this is their doing,
- 11:54This is their fault, and they're the reason why we're here, and
- 11:58you know, just to put a button in it. And I think that
- 12:01having a newer, younger coaches such as coach Jackson, who's coach at the
- 12:05Division two level, the Division IE level, I think he is in a
- 12:09better position from my estimation to navigate these new waters that we find ourselves in.
- 12:16And I'm pretty sure because one of the good things about when you speak
- 12:20about his youth is again relatable. Yeah, you know. And again one
- 12:26of the reasons why, and I'll close on it here, one of the
- 12:31reasons why I can't, I could never really see myself really ever coaching again,
- 12:35is simply because the reality of what I know how how that works doesn't
- 12:43apply. Na, coach, You're just gonna have a million status. We
- 12:46got you, okay, we got no, no, no no, we
- 12:54need to find the team that's going to get it. All right, ladies
- 12:58and gentlemen. That's uh. That's my two delegates today and I appreciate their
- 13:01time, and we're out of here. The opinions expressed on this program do
