- 0:003 lifelong friends, 6 trusty balls and endless NFL ticks
- 0:05welcome to three guys 6 balls NFL podcast welcome to episode
- 0:0848 of three guys 6 balls NFL podcast I'm your host Joel and
- 0:12I'm here with my two usual Co hosts will and Avery Avery how's
- 0:16Vegas treating you it's. Treated me well so far.
- 0:20It's nice cool 6970° dry heat which I love.
- 0:26I didn't say the other number. Yeah, just moved in a few days
- 0:32ago. Got this whole thing set up
- 0:34today. Yeah.
- 0:35Very, very excited to be back in Vegas.
- 0:39I lived here like 10 years ago. Have you seen Mark Davis's
- 0:41haircut yet? Not in person, but if I do I
- 0:45will snap a photo and we will use that as the thumbnail for a
- 0:49future episode. Please, please, we have to have
- 0:53it on our show. We just have to.
- 0:55I'll get it. All right, well, it's good to
- 0:58have Avery back with us after his move last week when he
- 1:01wasn't here. So last week Will and I talked
- 1:03about some of the NFL awards, and we're going to do that again
- 1:06this week because the NFL awards show is this week.
- 1:09So last week Will and I talked about the MVP award, the
- 1:13Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year
- 1:16awards. Today we're going to talk about
- 1:19Coach of the year. We're going to talk about
- 1:20offensive and defensive rookies. So we're not going to do all the
- 1:23awards, but we'll do Coach of the year, offensive rookie and
- 1:26defensive rookie the year, and then we'll talk about the Super
- 1:30Bowl, because that is also this week as well.
- 1:32And then if we have time at the end, we'll talk about some of
- 1:35the new coaching hires and go over which coaching hires we
- 1:38think are the best and the worst.
- 1:41But before we get into all that, as I mentioned, Will and I
- 1:44talked about some of the awards last week and we did for and
- 1:46against cases for some of those awards.
- 1:50Well, I decided that I was going to post on social.
- 1:53Yeah, a against case for Miles Garrett to not win defensive
- 1:58player of the year and that post on Instagram got 56.8000 views
- 2:05and it was mostly people to. Jail.
- 2:07Straight to jail. Yeah, it was mostly people just
- 2:10saying I'm a complete idiot. But anyways, it was it was
- 2:13awesome to see see it just blow up like that.
- 2:16It was really cool, even though pretty much every single person
- 2:19was saying I'm a moron except for all four people.
- 2:22I love how real real quick I do love how doing that post knowing
- 2:27that it was going to get hate and then seeing how much
- 2:29engagement you get. Like I'm sure the light turned
- 2:32on for you is to like This is why there's so much retarded
- 2:36content on the Internet as you can farm the hell out of this
- 2:43anyway. If you say something good, if
- 2:45you say yeah, Miles Garrett's going to win defensive player of
- 2:47the year. That post would have got like 3
- 2:49views. Yeah.
- 2:51Yeah, there you just, you have to say something like that in
- 2:53order for people to actually watch it.
- 2:56People love to hate. They do so.
- 2:57What we need is more rage bait then.
- 3:00Yes, we need to start a Browns hate podcast because the 2
- 3:04Browns posts that we've recently done are the two best posts
- 3:06we've ever had. So we need to start a Browns
- 3:09hate podcast. You know, ironically, if we did
- 3:11that on ironically, actually if we did a Browns hate podcast and
- 3:16went really deep into it, it would be similar to that, that
- 3:21scene from the other guys where Mark Wahlberg and ironically
- 3:24learned how to do like ballet or something to make fun of the
- 3:27ballet dudes and he like got really into it just to like make
- 3:31fun of them. It would be wild if we got into
- 3:34it and it got to the point where we were really deep into it and
- 3:37we just started making sense. And then it ended up becoming
- 3:40like the official Browns podcast because of like how like real
- 3:45and true all of our takes were. It would be funny, but it would,
- 3:48I could see that. I could see that doing really,
- 3:50really well. It would be fun.
- 3:51I'll say this about Browns fans. They love to defend their team
- 3:54even though they have to know that their team just sucks, but
- 3:58they defend their team to the deck.
- 4:00They. Have to, you know, it's funny, I
- 4:02even had one just random kid on Instagram reach out to me and he
- 4:06was like bro, did you just make a hate post against the Browns
- 4:10to just try and get Browns fans to hate you?
- 4:13And I was like yeah 100%. And he was like dude, the Browns
- 4:16only have like 3 total fans and two of them are me and my dad.
- 4:19Well, well, well, what do we have over here?
- 4:24Looks a Browns fan hurt us and decided to come in and chime in
- 4:28and try to defend the Browns. That's gross.
- 4:34I think I just threw up in my mouth.
- 4:36Hang. On, I need to go throw up real
- 4:38quick, a Browns fan. You not see my charges right
- 4:41over there? Come on now.
- 4:43Yeah, yeah, equal amounts of playoff success.
- 4:46That's not true. Come on, what are we doing,
- 4:53boys? What's up, Tim?
- 4:53What's going on? Man, I just, I don't know, I
- 4:57kind of dugout the O equipment for the first time in forever
- 5:01and just thought I'd see what you boys were up to.
- 5:04All right. Well, yeah, today we're going to
- 5:06talk about some NFL awards. Thanks for joining us.
- 5:09Hey, you're welcome. You're welcome.
- 5:10I hear you have an announcement you wanted to share with.
- 5:13Us. Oh, oh, you want me to do it
- 5:15now? Now.
- 5:16OK, well. Now we have to.
- 5:18Breaking news, you heard it first on the Three Guys 6 Balls
- 5:24podcast. The man Timmy Answer the Call
- 5:28podcast is coming back to a screen near you.
- 5:33Everything works out. Should be live next week.
- 5:36Back in it, Back in it. I'm not going to lie, I it's, it
- 5:41feels good to be back and I'm glad I I'm able to crash this
- 5:44party to kind of shake off the rust a little because I'm I'm
- 5:47sure there's going to be quite a bit, but.
- 5:50He's going to use us as Guinea pigs.
- 5:51Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah. A little test subject.
- 5:53So what are we talking tonight? All right.
- 5:56Well, just to give you the rundown.
- 5:58So we're talking about Coach of the Year, Offensive Rookie of
- 6:01the Year, Defensive Rookie of the Year, then we'll talk about
- 6:04the Super Bowl and then hopefully at the end we'll get
- 6:07to some of these recent coaching hires, best and worst.
- 6:10So we'll see how much we get through.
- 6:11But to get us started, let's let's go ahead and talk about
- 6:14Coach of the Year, Coach of the year.
- 6:16So the finalists for coach of the year are Liam Cohen, Ben
- 6:20Johnson, Mike McDonald, Kyle Shanahan and Mike Vrabel.
- 6:24So Tim, since you're our guest today, why don't you get us
- 6:27started? Who do you think's going to win
- 6:28Coach of the Year? Oh, that's actually a really
- 6:31good one because, you know, there's so many good coaches.
- 6:35I'm not going to sit here and spend a whole lot of time on
- 6:38this. But like, let's be real, an
- 6:40argument can be made on all these coaches, right?
- 6:43I mean, Ben Johnson turned around the Bears, Liam Cohen,
- 6:47you know, brought the Jags back to the playoffs.
- 6:49Mike McDonald only improved the Seahawks record from last year.
- 6:53Kyle Shanahan. I kind of feel like Kyle
- 6:55Shanahan is kind of on that. Sean Mcbay.
- 6:57I think you guys were talking about Sean Mcbay a little bit
- 7:00last week in the sense that it's kind of expected.
- 7:04Well, Kyle Shanahan for me, if he doesn't make the playoffs,
- 7:07it's a bigger deal. Then you got Mike Raybrol, who
- 7:10completely turned the Patriots around and got him to the Super
- 7:13Bowl. I personally would like to see
- 7:16Liam Cohen or Ben Johnson win it, but I really think that Mike
- 7:20Raybrol is going to take it. Well, who do you have winning
- 7:23Coach of the Year? Pete Kell.
- 7:25I mean, I man, I feel like the best case can be made for the
- 7:34three floor to ceiling coaches, right?
- 7:37Liam Cohen, Ben Johnson, Mike Brabel.
- 7:39I think it's a bit of a shame that Kyle Shanahan's here.
- 7:41I don't think he's that good of a coach, especially this year as
- 7:44a head coach. I don't think that he did his
- 7:47team enough service to warrant a ward.
- 7:51The case seemed to be made that, oh, but that his whole team got
- 7:55injured. OK, well, then your coaching
- 7:57staff didn't do a good job keeping your players protected.
- 7:59I mean, that's that's kind of what that blows down to me.
- 8:01I I think it's a shame he didn't hear.
- 8:03I would like to see Mike McDonald win it.
- 8:06That's not going to happen. I do think it's also going to go
- 8:09to to Mike Vrabel, but unfortunately, unfortunately, I
- 8:14think it probably should have been Johnson.
- 8:17Well, there's nothing unfortunate about that.
- 8:19I will just take the bears. Tim.
- 8:21OH. Bears bear hater.
- 8:23Wow. He hates them as much as you
- 8:25hate the Browns. But see I don't or just.
- 8:28Don't like them? I hate hates a strong word.
- 8:30Hates a strong word I. Hate the Browns.
- 8:32I root for them because. I hate the Eagles Hate.
- 8:35They're just terrible. Yeah.
- 8:36Like I hate the Chiefs. So I mean, I get it.
- 8:41See, that's that's an in division thing.
- 8:44You're a Chargers fan, right? You're supposed to hate your
- 8:46division rivals. I mean, the Bears are not in the
- 8:48Rams division. If if you hate the Browns
- 8:50though, I mean like, I mean you're just.
- 8:52It's punching down. It's the same thing with the
- 8:55Seahawks or the Rams hating the Cardinals.
- 8:58It's like, jeez, dude, like chill.
- 9:01Like they're so far in your rear view mirror.
- 9:04Like who cares? Like actually hating your little
- 9:07brother. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:09It's like, like, OK, anyway, the coach, I, I, I think it's got to
- 9:13be Mike Vrabel going from 13 and 4 to 14 and three.
- 9:18Insane. I I still remember when Will
- 9:20Campbell was drafted and in his little interview on the stage
- 9:25was talking about how he's going to protect Drake May, which I
- 9:28mean, yeah, he kind of did. I mean, you got him to the, you
- 9:31know, the Super Bowl, but like, he could have done a little bit
- 9:33better. But seeing how much that team
- 9:36improved, especially, I mean, I remember Mike Vrabel with the
- 9:39Titans, and I thought he looked promising there.
- 9:42And then he goes to the Patriots.
- 9:43And I think everyone kind of saw as like, oh, this could be good.
- 9:46Like the Titans are about to make a generational fumble here
- 9:49and we're seeing it now. But I also agree with what Will
- 9:52said. I think McDonald also, you know,
- 9:55should be up there, but it's one of those things where, you know,
- 9:58they weren't as bad last year and it's kind of like one of
- 10:01these late season pushes. It's kind of like trying to give
- 10:04this might be a deep cut, trying to give Ken Wisenhunt the coach
- 10:07of the year in was it 2009 or I think it was the 2008 nine
- 10:11season. But it's like they weren't a
- 10:13good team. They just made the playoffs and
- 10:15then went on a crazy run. And I think that's kind of, I
- 10:19don't want to say that's where the Seahawks are.
- 10:21It's a little bit different than that.
- 10:22They got the number one seed, but they were just pretty, they
- 10:25were pretty good this whole season, but they really ramped
- 10:28it up late. But I think just because of the
- 10:30situation and everything, I think Vrabel absolutely deserves
- 10:33it. I would like to know what
- 10:35factors go in to make him coach of the year.
- 10:37Is it? The same factors.
- 10:38The same factors that decided Bill Belichick wasn't a first
- 10:41ballot Hall of Famer. Yeah, imagine.
- 10:43Imagine how good Tom Brady could have been.
- 10:45I actually don't imagine how good Tom Brady could have been.
- 10:48Hall of Fame coach Imagine. Tim, Tim, you're going to have
- 10:51to leave. I'm sorry.
- 10:53No, no, listen. Just listen.
- 10:54Wait, wait, wait, wait. Tim, are you pro Bill Belichick
- 10:57not being in the Hall of Fame? No, no, no, I'm not.
- 11:00Like, he definitely deserves to be in, but let's think about
- 11:03this from a standpoint he gets in. 8 Super Bowls.
- 11:07He get, he gets in first ballot. No listen time out.
- 11:11I I I've already got this. Super Bowl No.
- 11:13Hold on, I only hear Tim's case. I'm about to shred it to pieces.
- 11:16OK, so he definitely deserves to be in OK, And I'm not saying
- 11:21that he doesn't deserve, but we'll think about it from this
- 11:23standpoint. If he got first ballot Hall of
- 11:26Fame, OK, then boom, he got he got into the Hall of Fame and
- 11:30that's it. But here we are.
- 11:32We're on Super Bowl week media row and we're talking Bill
- 11:36Belichick not making the Super Bowl.
- 11:38That was clearly a, you know, a move that way.
- 11:43He just he has a spotlight and he will for sure get in next
- 11:48season or the next time he's eligible.
- 11:51But I mean, from a standpoint of the media, yeah, I can
- 11:54understand why this happened. It this isn't just accidentally
- 11:58happened and Robert Kraft didn't get in today Like it this isn't
- 12:02accidentally, guys. This is done for a reason.
- 12:06So your your take here is that they rigged the system so it
- 12:10would still be talking about Belichick during Super Bowl?
- 12:13Week. Hey, I mean, I've listened to a
- 12:15lot of outlets and they're still talking about Bill Belichick not
- 12:19making the Hall of Fame. Wait.
- 12:21Because it's a travesty. He's he won 8 Super Bowls.
- 12:24This is more shocking than I'm not.
- 12:26Saying he doesn't deserve it, guys, I'm just saying from a
- 12:29standpoint, I can understand that.
- 12:31The media, you know, it gives the media something to talk
- 12:34about. And let's face it, Bill Polian
- 12:36has a grudge because he whooped on the Colts all those years.
- 12:40I just don't think I just don't. Is there a better coach than
- 12:44Bill Belichick? Like if I mean, if we're talking
- 12:46a whole thing, how many coaches are in the Hall of Fame?
- 12:50How many of those coaches are better than Bill Belichick?
- 12:52His haircut is better than Bill Belichick.
- 12:54OK, now you really got, maybe now you really got to leave.
- 12:57Tim, come on. I know you're just warming up,
- 13:00but come on, man. Anyways, back to Coach of the
- 13:04year here. So before I give who I would
- 13:07pick, I just want to say I think all five of these coaches
- 13:10deserve to win Coach of the year.
- 13:12But if I had a vote for coach of the year, here's how I would
- 13:15narrow it down. I would first eliminate Mike
- 13:17McDonald. I understand that his team won
- 13:1914 games and he was the one seed.
- 13:21But when McDonald took over this team two years ago, they were
- 13:24nine and eight the year before. You know, he won double digit
- 13:27games in his first season as head coach, and I'm not
- 13:29discrediting him at all, but he didn't take over like a four
- 13:33win, three win team. He took over a team that had
- 13:36nine wins for the last two seasons before he got there.
- 13:39He already had a very solid team before he was the head coach, so
- 13:43it's not like some of these other guys who are working with
- 13:45teams that won four games a year before.
- 13:48Mike McDonald was a great coach, but I would eliminate him for
- 13:50that reason. I would eliminate Couch.
- 13:52Pause right there. Can I pause you right there?
- 13:54Make a counter argument for Mike McDonald.
- 13:56I think Mike McDowell should get it because he took his three
- 14:01skill players right. You had Gino, you had DK and you
- 14:04had Tyler Lockett and you said you 3 are not getting me to the
- 14:07Super Bowl. All three of you out.
- 14:09I will find that literally anybody else.
- 14:12And that's what he did. And now look at where he's at
- 14:143:00. Players don't make a team coach.
- 14:16Three players could complete a team.
- 14:17When you have when you have a. He saw the problem and said
- 14:22you're out. But when you have a overall
- 14:24solid team, the overall solid team won nine games two years in
- 14:28a row, I understand there's pieces you could put in, but the
- 14:32Jaguars sucked, like forever. It's not like they were winning
- 14:36nine games and Liam Cohen just stepped in and won 13 games.
- 14:40You know, they traded for Jacoby Myers and then went on a hot
- 14:42streak. They got the right player in and
- 14:45then we're really good. Same thing Mike McDonald did,
- 14:47got the if anything and went on history.
- 14:50If anything, you could say John Schneider for GM of the year, I
- 14:54mean. Absolutely.
- 14:56Absolutely. So it might be, it might be more
- 14:58of like the two of them combined, so less of a coach,
- 15:02less of a full GM, but like together, like they've created
- 15:05magic this season. For sure, and that's why I asked
- 15:08the question, what criteria goes into actually awarding Coach of
- 15:13the Year? Mike Vrabel, I think, makes all
- 15:16personal decisions over there. I'm pretty sure the GM, they
- 15:18don't have AGMI, don't really know how that works in New
- 15:20England. They don't really want people to
- 15:22know how it works in New England, which is fine.
- 15:24They're not Hall of Fame worthy over there anyway, who cares?
- 15:27So Mike Vrabel made all these personal decisions, brought a
- 15:30bunch of people in, paid Milton Williams, the highest amount
- 15:34anybody has ever made as a New England Patriot, and what's it
- 15:37get all the way to the Super Bowl?
- 15:39So if we're depending on the criteria we're talking about, if
- 15:44we're talking about offseason acquisition and how that got you
- 15:46in the season, then I think it should be between Mike McDonald
- 15:49and Mike Vrabel. Sorry, Joe, I keep cutting you.
- 15:51Off you go. Yeah, stop.
- 15:54Come on. But anyways, I would eliminate
- 15:57Kyle Shanahan because he's won double digit games five times in
- 16:00his career. He's been to four NFC
- 16:01Championship games and two Super Bowls.
- 16:03This is just what we expect from Kyle Shanahan and I feel like
- 16:07most of the time this award goes to a coach who did something we
- 16:10didn't expect. So for me, coach of the year
- 16:13really comes down to three coaches for me, Liam Cohen, Ben
- 16:16Johnson and Mike Rabel. Liam Cohen took the Jags from 4
- 16:19and 13 to 13 and four and he's the only coach in NFL history to
- 16:23win 12 or more games as a first year head coach after taking
- 16:27over a team that had four or less wins the season before.
- 16:30When you think about a successful franchise, do you
- 16:33think about the Jaguars? Absolutely not.
- 16:36But Liam Cohen just came in with the team that he was given and
- 16:39won 13 games in his first season as a Jaguars head coach.
- 16:43Then you've got Ben Johnson, who I think is the popular pick
- 16:46because of the hype he received for the award before the season.
- 16:49And he lived up to the hype. He completely changed the way
- 16:51that this team operated. He changed the identity of this
- 16:54team. If you took last year's Bears
- 16:56team and you put them in those same late game situations as
- 16:59this year's Bears team, they probably lose every single time.
- 17:03But Ben Johnson helped this Bears team to grow up.
- 17:06And then finally you've got Mike Vrabel, who also took over a
- 17:09four and 13 team and got fourteen wins.
- 17:12He took a team that had four wins, brought in a bunch of
- 17:14guys, got them to quickly buy into his system.
- 17:17He got a second year quarterback to be a finalist for MVP and
- 17:20possibly might be the MVP. And so all three of these guys
- 17:24to me are the most impressive coaches of the year.
- 17:27Yes. Will, I know you think that
- 17:28Matthew Stafford is going to win it, but I said might.
- 17:31I did say might, just so you know.
- 17:35That's why I only glared at you. I didn't say any words.
- 17:38So if I was voting for coach of the year, I would personally
- 17:41vote for Liam Cohen because he won 13 games with the Jaguars,
- 17:44which is almost unheard of with the Patriots.
- 17:47They have a history of a being a winning franchise and so it's
- 17:50more expected from the Patriots than it is from the Jaguars.
- 17:54Nobody expects the Jaguars to ever be good.
- 17:56Nobody thought the Jaguars were going to be good this year
- 17:59because it's the Jaguars. So I would personally go with
- 18:02Liam Cohen, but I don't think there's a really a wrong choice
- 18:05here. Definitely not.
- 18:06There is a wrong choice. Except for Carroll.
- 18:08Kyle Shane, No, Kyle Shane. I would give Pete Carroll votes
- 18:12because you have to put up in Vegas for Kyle Shane.
- 18:16All right, anyways, let's move on to Offensive Rookie of the
- 18:18Year. So the finalists for this award
- 18:20are Jackson Dart, and that's it. Jackson Dart.
- 18:23All right, let's go. No Jackson Dart and Mecca Ibuka,
- 18:26Trevion Henderson, Tetzaroa McMillan and Tyler Shuck.
- 18:30So well. Why don't you start us on this
- 18:32one? Who do you think's going to win
- 18:33Offensive Rookie of the Year? Ted McMillan, I think if Tyler
- 18:36Chuck plays the whole year, I think he's another favorite shot
- 18:39at it now. Notably gave that man a lot of
- 18:43crap and gave the sink a lot of crap.
- 18:45And then he kind of said, I'm going to just figure this out.
- 18:48You forget I'm actually like almost 30 years old.
- 18:51I'm an adult to make decisions. I'm not some young Jackson Dart
- 18:54kid who still thinks I have to have be all cool.
- 18:56So if it wasn't just the last, just the last few weeks of the
- 19:02season, I would give it to to Tyler Shuck, but but to me it
- 19:06goes to to Ted McMillan. I of course don't have the stats
- 19:09for that because I wasn't. Oh, I do 70 catches on 122
- 19:13targets, 1014 yards and seven touchdowns.
- 19:17Yeah, great. If that's a veteran, he's
- 19:18getting a, he's getting a contract extension.
- 19:21And that's how that works. If that's in your contract here,
- 19:23you're getting an extension. You don't expect any, you don't
- 19:26expect anybody in the Panthers to have those kind of numbers.
- 19:28You don't expect anybody being thrown the ball by Bryce Young
- 19:32to have those kind of numbers. And that just happens to be
- 19:34both. It's Ted McMillan to me, and I
- 19:36expect more from him moving on moving forward.
- 19:40Excuse me by. Avery and Tim, do you guys have
- 19:43anybody other than Ted? No, I got Ted.
- 19:46Yeah, I did it. Yeah, I have Will wins.
- 19:49I definitely have somebody other than Ted.
- 19:51Although I will say Will very well said.
- 19:54An argument can be made for, I mean, realistically, 3 out of
- 19:59these five candidates. And I think when it comes down
- 20:03to it, I wish Tyler Shook would have started the season instead
- 20:06of the Saints. Wasted half of a season with
- 20:09Spencer Rattler. I couldn't even think of his
- 20:11name because he was that crappy. But.
- 20:13If they would have started with Tyler Shook, I think he hands
- 20:16down wins the rookie of the year.
- 20:19But really it can come down to a coin flip between Ted and
- 20:23Jackson Dart. I think Jackson Dart does get it
- 20:25though, because his number one wide receiver wins.
- 20:28Jackson Dart. OK, his starting running back,
- 20:31his bowling ball of a running back goes down, he has a crappy
- 20:36offensive line, he has a head coach that gets fired in the
- 20:39middle of the season, and he still managed to go 2272 yards,
- 20:4415 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 86 carries for 487 yards, 9
- 20:49touchdowns. And now you know that's without
- 20:53weapons. Imagine if he would have had
- 20:56Malik Neighbors and KM Scataboo that didn't get hurt and he had
- 21:01that. I think he would have put up MVP
- 21:03type numbers. And so for me, I'm going to go
- 21:06with Jackson Dart. I'd like to go back to my answer
- 21:10because all I said was yes or I did.
- 21:13I also was considering Jackson, but my main reason for going
- 21:17full tilt on Tet is mainly just because like, hey, he actually
- 21:21did it. There's a whole lot of you know,
- 21:23oh, you know, oh, Malik neighbors would have had a great
- 21:26season. We should give him, you know,
- 21:27Pro Bowl honors or something. It's like, hey, but but I mean,
- 21:30he didn't and that's that is part of it, you know, avoiding
- 21:32injuries and all this. And I think that, I mean, at
- 21:35this point, the Pro Bowl is just as credible as the Hall of Fame.
- 21:37So. Justin Fields turned down the.
- 21:40Should Shadur. Is better, right?
- 21:42Now Shadur is better than Bill Belichick.
- 21:44That's what the NFL is trying to tell us.
- 21:47How many proposed did Belichick make?
- 21:49That's true. That's true at least one less
- 21:53than Shadur. But All in all, like, I mean,
- 21:56and and this comes from a Bucks fan who really wanted Ibuka to
- 22:00win it. Ted just did it and it was on
- 22:03the Panthers with Bryce Young, who the year before, you know,
- 22:06this I, I mean, yeah, they got I, I mean, it wasn't Ted the
- 22:10first. Was he the first receiver
- 22:12picked? Oh yeah, yes.
- 22:14Yeah, I mean, even then it's kind of like, it sounds a little
- 22:17bit like like a quarterback going to The Jets where it's
- 22:19like cool receiver going to the Panthers right now.
- 22:22It's like, who knows if this man's even going to get the
- 22:24ball, you know? So I, I feel like because of
- 22:26that, because of the odds he had to overcome to be a basically, I
- 22:30mean, he's already 1000 yard receiver.
- 22:33And I think as much as Dart, you know, was exciting, I, I wanted
- 22:38to watch every game he was playing in, you know, even that
- 22:42even with that, I do still think that Ted put up the production
- 22:46and earned the award. Well, I think you guys are all
- 22:49wrong. I think Trayvon Henderson wins
- 22:52Rookie of the Year. If you look at no, if you look
- 22:57at Emeki Ibuka, Ted McMillan and Trayvon Henderson, I think those
- 23:01are the three guys who have the best chance to win in.
- 23:04But Abuka started the season off hot and then he faded towards
- 23:07the end of the season. Ted McMillan, he was more
- 23:10consistent throughout the season, but he did drop off a
- 23:12little bit towards the end of the season as well.
- 23:15But then you've got Trayvon Henderson who is kind of the
- 23:17opposite. He started off very slow, but
- 23:20then towards the end of the season he came on really strong
- 23:22and he actually finished with more total yards.
- 23:25And I know this is a running back compared to wide receivers,
- 23:28but he finished with more total yards in both Tet and Abuka.
- 23:31So he had 1132 total yards, 911 rushing yards, and 221 receiving
- 23:37yards, and he had 10 total touchdowns.
- 23:40Tet had 7 touchdowns and Abuka had six.
- 23:42Trayvon Henderson had more yards and more touchdowns than both of
- 23:46those guys, and he did 911 rushing yards on only 180
- 23:51carries. He didn't even have 200 carries
- 23:53when Trayvon Henderson was given the opportunity.
- 23:55He was fantastic for the Patriots.
- 23:58Now, I don't know why they didn't use them in some games
- 24:01the way that they should have. They just didn't.
- 24:03But when he was in there, he was electrifying.
- 24:06He had a lot of very long runs, specifically against the
- 24:09Buccaneers, which was not fun to watch, but he was electrifying
- 24:14when he was in the game. I think he deserves to win
- 24:17Rookie of the Year because overall I think if he had, if
- 24:20you give him 200 carries, he's easily, easily over 1000 rushing
- 24:24yards. But again, he has more total
- 24:26yards and more touchdowns than both of the wide receivers who
- 24:30are in the race for this award. So my only knock on everyone I
- 24:36guess except Ibuka and in favor of Tet is that Tet started all
- 24:4117 games. He was the premier guy all 17
- 24:46games. Shouldn't that be a case for
- 24:49Trayvon Henderson though? Because even though he didn't
- 24:51start all 17 games, he had better stats than Ted.
- 24:54I get what you're saying and I don't think so because the same
- 24:57same thing we could say for Tyler Schruck.
- 24:59I hope you've played more and I guess you're what you're saying
- 25:01is that Henderson played last and had better stats.
- 25:04I think team scheme comes in a lot there and obviously that's
- 25:08how anybody wins any award as the team gives them the ball and
- 25:11then they get to score points. But I think you got to kind of
- 25:14give the knock to the fact that he's on the Panthers, he's got
- 25:18Bryce Young and he's still put up over 1000 yards in his rookie
- 25:22season. All right, well, let's move on
- 25:23to Defensive Rookie of the Year. Does anybody not have Carson
- 25:28Swessinger? I mean, who else?
- 25:31Who else? Avery, I'm assuming that means
- 25:35you do have him since he didn't say anything.
- 25:37OK. All right, Tim, why is it not
- 25:39Carson Schwessinger? I'm going to go with a safety.
- 25:43Yes, a safety I know. I'm going with Xavier Watts.
- 25:47He had 96 tackles as a safety. He had five interceptions, 11
- 25:52pass breakups. And then you're looking at, you
- 25:54know, like I said, 96 tackles as a safety, 59 of it was solo, 37
- 25:59assisted. Like I said, 5 interceptions, 11
- 26:01pass defended and one fumble recovery.
- 26:04So I think really, I mean Xavier Watts, you know, he could easily
- 26:10take this from Carson. It probably will be Carson,
- 26:13let's be real. But I'm just saying it could be
- 26:16a safety that wins Rookie of the Year and my boy Xavier Watts
- 26:21from Notre Dame. Oh, now I see why you're picking
- 26:23him. OK, I think you can make a case
- 26:25for really four out of the five guys.
- 26:28I I don't honestly know why Abdul Carter is even on this
- 26:31list. Abdul Carter only had four sacks
- 26:33the whole season. He had a half a sack in Week 1
- 26:35and then his next sack didn't come until their 13th game of
- 26:38the year, which is surprising because that's who we all be
- 26:40like. Everybody picked Abdul Carter to
- 26:42be Defensive Rookie of the Year, and to me, he should be last
- 26:46place on this list. Out of the finalists, he should
- 26:48be last, please. Right.
- 26:50Well, Will or Avery, do you guys have anything you want to say
- 26:52about Carson Schwesinger? Because US 3.
- 26:55Have him as winning the year. So he was all over the field.
- 26:59156 tackles, that's combined 67. I know what I said solo 89
- 27:04assists, 11 of them were for loss, 11 tackles for loss, 9 QB
- 27:09hits. So he was in there affecting the
- 27:11play and the Browns were always on defense.
- 27:13So this dude was always playing. He ended up with two
- 27:16interceptors on the season, and so safety Xavier Watts got five.
- 27:22Well, middle linebacker Carson Schwesinger got 2.
- 27:25That's not a huge difference when you're talking interception
- 27:28numbers. There is a difference in 60
- 27:30tackles between the two guys though.
- 27:31Yeah, and that's huge. And and the fact that he was
- 27:36always there making the play. I couldn't think of a better
- 27:39teammate to have as Carson Schwesinger, Zen, Miles,
- 27:42Garrett, the possible, the defensive player of the year.
- 27:47Maybe we'll see. But that brown scene was bad so
- 27:49maybe they won't give it the swath injure either.
- 27:50So. My only push back on that is,
- 27:54let's be real, he did just play right, like next to Mason Graham
- 27:58and Myles Garrett. I mean, they kind of opened up a
- 28:02lot for him is all I'm trying to.
- 28:04Say, OK, then Matthew Stafford shouldn't win MVP because he had
- 28:07Puka Nikola and Devonte Adams and offensive line we should get
- 28:12We'll send it klibet, klibet. Some country bumpkins who?
- 28:16Did Drake Mays winning it? That's why Drake Mays winning it
- 28:18will. Oh, he had Stefan Davies and and
- 28:21Rookie of the year candidate Trivian Henderson Digs.
- 28:25Yeah, I, I, I just, we can't take away from him because he
- 28:30played with good players. I'm not taking away from him,
- 28:33I'm just saying that you. Were doing that, you were
- 28:38saying, well he had good players beside him so.
- 28:41Let's be. No, he had miles.
- 28:43Garrett there's like a there's a difference, like having Miles
- 28:46Garrett like that you're playing with and then having like, you
- 28:50know, somebody else if he had somebody else.
- 28:52That's Westinger was so good. Hey, if he did not have Miles
- 28:56Garrett, does he have the stats that he has?
- 28:58That's all I'm asking, I don't think.
- 28:59No, he probably has 200 stacks from him.
- 29:01Yeah, he. Probably has 200 stacks exactly.
- 29:04So OK, 10, let me let me open this up a bit further.
- 29:08I don't think Jackson Smith and Jiggba or Luka Nikua are the
- 29:12receivers that we have today without having Cooper Cup as a
- 29:15teammate. I don't think they are the
- 29:17receivers that we see this year without learning from Cooper Cup
- 29:22Triple Crown winner. You can't take away anything
- 29:24they're doing because they're playing with a all time great at
- 29:29one at one time in his career, the greatest that did it.
- 29:33You can't take away from from who you learned from that should
- 29:36be you should be commending him. Hey, you young buck learned from
- 29:41the old head and actually did well with it.
- 29:44It should be a good thing and a bad thing.
- 29:46How many kids do you know that are Schlessinger's age, 2524
- 29:49years old, to ask you to listen to anybody?
- 29:52I know so many kids. RIP it, RIP it.
- 30:02This is just me arguing against you will.
- 30:04That's all it is. That's fine, I'd love to argue.
- 30:07I'm good at it. All right.
- 30:08Does anybody have anything else to add with any of these awards
- 30:11that we've talked about? Nope.
- 30:12OK, let's move on to the Super Bowl.
- 30:15Avery, who's winning the Super Bowl?
- 30:17Seahawks. I know I said earlier that I
- 30:20thought the Patriots would win. I saw that I said that early on.
- 30:24But I'm changing my vote and I think they just got too much
- 30:27firepower. And I think if Drake May or
- 30:30anyone turns the ball over, it's just like rolling a snowball
- 30:33down a snowy mountain. I think it's just going to
- 30:36compound and compound and it's just going to be rough.
- 30:39It's going to be similar, not as bad.
- 30:41It better not be as bad as that. A Broncos Super Bowl where it
- 30:45just seemed like this any any mistake they made made just
- 30:49turned into 7 points. From the opening snap over by, I
- 30:53said. Yeah, I, I feel like they're
- 30:55going to, I think, I think they're going to pull this one
- 30:57out. Tim, do you agree?
- 30:59Hang on. He's looking up who's in the
- 31:01Super Bowl. No, no, I, I, I literally was
- 31:05doing heads, Patriots, tails Seahawks.
- 31:08I, I marginally better. No.
- 31:14So OK, here's my thing. Everybody's saying that the the
- 31:19Seahawks are 4 1/2 favorites and that kind of scares me.
- 31:23And Mike Vrabel has experience as a player in the Super Bowl,
- 31:29so he knows at from a player standpoint what it takes to win
- 31:34one, win multiple at that. And let's let let's be real,
- 31:39Clint Kubiak is already focused on how life is going to be in
- 31:43Las Vegas when he takes that head coaching job come Monday
- 31:46morning. So I don't think the Seahawks
- 31:48offense is going to be nearly as good as what we have seen all
- 31:51season. I think Kubiak is already going
- 31:53to be thinking about what he's going to be doing with Mendoza
- 31:56and Brock Bowers and Ashton Genti.
- 31:59And so I just think that with the experience of Mike Rabriel
- 32:03and Kubiak already out the door, I think the Patriots squeak out
- 32:08one. Will, would you like to respond
- 32:10I'm. Going to go first.
- 32:12Sure. If that's OK, well.
- 32:14Yeah, no, I, I, Your Honor, I, I forfeit my time to Avery.
- 32:20I. Normally, I would not say that
- 32:23Kubiak taking that job would affect them because that's what
- 32:26I believed when Oregon's offensive and defensive
- 32:31coordinators got head coaching jobs.
- 32:34And I'm like, they've got this set.
- 32:35The team knows what they were doing.
- 32:37And then they played Indiana and it looks like they had never had
- 32:42an offensive or defensive coordinator before.
- 32:44So that could actually be something there.
- 32:47I hope it's not. I hope they're all professionals
- 32:50and can remember what they've been doing the whole season.
- 32:53But. Hey.
- 32:54Hey, Joel. I don't think it's, I don't
- 32:56think it's nothing. You're the stat guy.
- 32:58What's the percentage of underdogs winning the Super
- 33:02Bowl? I didn't look that up because I
- 33:04don't think it matters. Why is that?
- 33:07Why? Is it because any team can beat
- 33:09any team on any day? Well, yeah, but I mean that we
- 33:11could say that about every other game where there's a underdog
- 33:14and a favorite. I mean, there has to be some
- 33:17kind of percentage of underdog to favorite that wins.
- 33:20I don't pay attention. I don't pay attention to the
- 33:23underdogs because I don't do the whole betting stuff.
- 33:25So the 4 1/2 point, I don't even know what that means.
- 33:28I don't even know what. That means it just means that
- 33:30they're favored by. I have no idea.
- 33:32So. Means that people with money
- 33:34that are addicts and degenerates believe that the Seahawks will
- 33:38win. It means that degenerates
- 33:40believe that someone will win. That's what it means.
- 33:42It's it's not stats. It's.
- 33:44It's five and then that with money it will be by.
- 33:47Also also, how can you be favored by 4 1/2 when you can't
- 33:50win by 4 1/2? You can't win by 4 1/2 points.
- 33:53That's why it doesn't make any sense to me.
- 33:55You can't. That it's just.
- 33:57It's just a line. It's just, yeah, it's just a
- 33:59bet. I don't even know what that
- 34:00means. I know, I know literally 0% of
- 34:04things about betting. Zero.
- 34:05That's a good thing. That's a good.
- 34:06Thing that's a great Yeah, as I say, every time I bring up
- 34:09betting, we don't gamble on this show.
- 34:11But no, yeah, so I would agree with Tim's Quincubiak theory if
- 34:21it hadn't already been disproved time and time again in this
- 34:24playoff run. This is not new news that Clint
- 34:27Kubiak's going at the Raiders. It may have come out recently,
- 34:31but they are. You made this decision.
- 34:34It just wasn't public yet. Clint Kubiak's been going at the
- 34:36Raiders for probably about 3-4 weeks now.
- 34:40That's not new. Just like when Chris Shula, Nate
- 34:43Scheelhaus and all the other assistants out there were
- 34:47getting head coaching jobs and yet their teams were still
- 34:50winning. This is not a new thing.
- 34:53I truly believe This is why college football is so jacked
- 34:58right now is because their free agency period, their transfer
- 35:02portal is in the middle of the playoffs.
- 35:04That has got to stop. Could you imagine how crazy the
- 35:07NFL would be if free agency was going on right now for every
- 35:10team that already been eliminated?
- 35:12That's wild behavior. Wild.
- 35:15So I think, truly think that Kubiak saying Raiders will get
- 35:20to you. Was it February 9th?
- 35:22I'm all yours right now. Not even a little bit.
- 35:26I will meet with Mark Davis. I will meet with whoever the GM,
- 35:30Tom Brady, excuse me, whoever the GM is, Tom Brady's not the
- 35:33GM, but he's basically, I will meet with all these guys after I
- 35:37want to ring and bring it, bring it to Vegas with me.
- 35:41So I don't think it's going to have any effect.
- 35:43Kubiak is called an absolutely outstanding playoffs.
- 35:47And you know who hasn't had and called an outstanding playoffs?
- 35:51Anybody on the Patriots. I mean, Drake Mays drew for 86
- 35:55yards last week, completed 10 passes, 10 to 2186 yards.
- 35:59Starting to sound like a parrot from a week ago, but Drake May
- 36:03has played abysmal. He's barely over 50% completion
- 36:06percentage in the playoffs. And now we're going to the
- 36:09biggest stage where the fans who were there don't give a RIP
- 36:13about the game. It's all corporate now.
- 36:15You're going to hear cheering, but it's all business and
- 36:18corporate. And yes they may be football
- 36:19fans, but the amount of actual Patriot and actual Seahawks fans
- 36:24at the game, you're not. Your average Joe fan isn't
- 36:27paying 10s of thousands if not 20s and thousands of dollars.
- 36:31I don't know how expensive tickets are this year, but I'm
- 36:33pretty sure last I saw the nosebleeds were in the $40,000
- 36:36range. That is mega corporations buying
- 36:39tickets to give out to vendors as, hey, if I give you this,
- 36:43you'll give me kickback. It's all just a corporate game,
- 36:46so you're not going to have real fans there.
- 36:48And so the momentum swings aren't going to be as big
- 36:50anymore. I think the Seahawks showed it
- 36:53when they kept the foot on the gas against the liners.
- 36:59They showed it. They showed it when they took
- 37:04the Rams all the way to the very end and said we're not going to
- 37:07let you win. No matter what happens, we won't
- 37:10do it. And we're going to see it again.
- 37:12Because they played multiple teams who have been good and it
- 37:15would've been very easy against the Niners to let up and be
- 37:18like, OK, well we've got this in the bag.
- 37:20And then they give that game up. And if you play to not win, you
- 37:23play to loose. As we've already seen them have
- 37:26both hard fought game and easy one game in the playoffs.
- 37:29And they're going to stick it to the Patriots like the Patriots
- 37:32have yet to be stuck before. I do expect a Broncos Seahawks
- 37:36Super Bowl again. I'll respond to that, though,
- 37:38will, because I get that the Patriots may not have been
- 37:42playing very good football in the playoffs, but guess what
- 37:44they've been doing? They've found ways to win, and
- 37:48that's all that matters. Yep, that's all that matters.
- 37:50Again, it's incredibly bad offenses.
- 37:52It doesn't matter. They found ways to win.
- 37:54That is true, you're right. The Seahawks have found ways to
- 37:56win while looking competent and. That's looking very good.
- 38:01If you taken it, you know, an unstoppable train and an even
- 38:04better, bigger looking unstoppable train, you know.
- 38:08Yeah, but at the end of the day, at the end of the day, look,
- 38:11what's that matters, the WS and the LS, It does not matter how
- 38:15you get there. What happens in the game, all
- 38:18people talk about is did you win that game or did you lose that
- 38:21game and that's all that matters.
- 38:23Well. Well, that's what we're talking
- 38:25about. We have two teams that have been
- 38:26doing that. So it's not like we're talking
- 38:28about like, is this team going to like, does this team know how
- 38:30to win? They both know how to win.
- 38:33When you take two teams that know how to win, you put them
- 38:35against each other. That's what we're talking about.
- 38:37Of course, they've all made it. I mean, they've all made it to
- 38:39the Super Bowl, so they've all found ways to win.
- 38:42Now we're pitting them against each other though.
- 38:44Look, I'll say I am picking the Seahawks to win the Super Bowl,
- 38:48but I'm not counting the Patriots out because I think the
- 38:52Patriots have this big chip on their shoulder going into the
- 38:54Super Bowl because everybody thinks that they're going to
- 38:57lose. If you're not a Patriots fan,
- 38:59you probably think that the Seahawks are going to win the
- 39:01Super Bowl, but I think that actually might work in the
- 39:04Patriots favor because they're going to go into this game like
- 39:07the 2017 Eagles with their backup quarterback, where nobody
- 39:10thinks they're going to win. Nobody thinks they're going to
- 39:12win except for their fans. But I do think that the Patriots
- 39:15can compete with the Seahawks because they have this chip on
- 39:17their shoulder and nobody thinks they're going to win.
- 39:20But they've all they've been doing is just winning the whole
- 39:22time against these great defenses.
- 39:25And I know their offenses haven't been great, but still
- 39:27they've been winning. So I think the Patriots, I don't
- 39:30think you should count them out. I'm picking the Seahawks, but I
- 39:33don't think you should count the Patriots out.
- 39:34I think it was somebody that you guys BN, Orlovsky maybe said.
- 39:38With 31 other quarterbacks, the Texans win that game.
- 39:43Like like that's just the way that goes.
- 39:44Even if the game had been played two weeks before, maybe CJ
- 39:50Stroud doesn't throw 3 picks and and throw a full picture of how
- 39:54many threw that game and throw that game away.
- 39:57I just think that yes, they've been playing incredible
- 39:59defenses, but they've been playing terrible offenses and
- 40:02that is not the Seahawks. And I think you're right, the
- 40:06Patriots could keep it close. I just don't think it's going to
- 40:09happen. They could, I just don't Asian.
- 40:13OK, so let's talk about some coaching hires.
- 40:15I want to talk about some coaching hires and I wanted to
- 40:18talk about best and worst. But since we like pissing off
- 40:21people on the Internet, let's just talk about the worst
- 40:24coaching hires. So, Tim, let us know which
- 40:28coaching hire do you think is the worst?
- 40:30So I'm going to say that I think that the worst head coaching
- 40:35hire has got to either be A Todd Monken or B Mike McCarthy.
- 40:42Not a, not a fan of either one of those.
- 40:44We're now in a situation where the Cincinnati Bengals might
- 40:48just walk away with this division because you hired Mike
- 40:50McCarthy and Todd Monken. I don't understand why Todd went
- 40:54to be a head coach. Maybe this is his like
- 40:56retirement party. Like, hey, I'm out the door.
- 40:59This is going to be the last time I ever get offered a head
- 41:02coaching job. I don't know why the Browns
- 41:04would have offered him that. I don't really understand the
- 41:07Mike McCarthy one because I don't feel like Mike McCarthy
- 41:11get you over that hump. I feel like Mike McCarthy will
- 41:15have about he'll win 9 or 10 games, make the playoffs and
- 41:19lose in the first round. Just kind of like what Mike
- 41:21Tomlin has done. It's lateral.
- 41:23It's a lateral move. Lateral, you're the exact same
- 41:25team. I'm not a fan of either one of
- 41:27those. Probably would learn more toward
- 41:29the Steelers because after Mike Tomlin, you need somebody that's
- 41:33going to, you know, take you to that next level.
- 41:35Cause Mike Tomlin for 19 seasons had a winning record.
- 41:39He has Super Bowl, he has playoff appearances, but he also
- 41:42has first round exit after first round exit.
- 41:45So I think you need a coach that elevates you to the AFC
- 41:48championship, into another Super Bowl.
- 41:50And Mike McCarthy is not that guy.
- 41:52And he still believes in Aaron Rodgers.
- 41:54So if I had to pick out of the two, I hate Mike McCarthy going
- 41:59to the Steelers the most. Will what do you think?
- 42:01What's the worst coaching hire? Now, Mike McCarthy, that's for
- 42:04sure. You like that?
- 42:06Oh I true. Truly this is not rage bait.
- 42:10Truly I love the Mike McCarthy hire.
- 42:14I'm with Will. Love.
- 42:15It with will love it all the way to my core.
- 42:18I think this was a wonderful hire by the Steelers because for
- 42:21the same reason, Joel, the same reason you said that the
- 42:25Buccaneers didn't fire Todd Bowles.
- 42:28We're just going to wait for a short term gap and then get the
- 42:30coach we actually want, OK? That's we keep holding on is the
- 42:35coach we actually want you hired?
- 42:37Mike McCarthy, born and raised Yenzer from Pittsburgh, grew up
- 42:42a Steelers fan. His dad was as Pittsburgh
- 42:44firefighter and police officer. He also owned a local bar.
- 42:48All right, Mike McCarthy, Pittsburgh throwing the route.
- 42:51Also Mike McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers reunion, one last go at
- 42:56it to get to the wild card round and lose again.
- 42:58Sure, but what are we expecting from them?
- 43:01Well, you're expecting a couple years of Mike McCarthy and then
- 43:05moving on. Yeah, but the but the Steelers
- 43:07have had three coaches since 1969.
- 43:09OK, well, cool. Now they're going to have three
- 43:13coaches in 10 years. Congratulations.
- 43:16Times change. I just think that this Mike
- 43:19McCarthy hire is such a good stop gap because there were not
- 43:23the coaches out there that you wanted.
- 43:26But like, you're not getting Kurt Zignetti from college.
- 43:28That's not happening this year. It's just not happening.
- 43:31You're not getting the next. Who's the next hot young guy?
- 43:35Don't. Click that.
- 43:37You're not getting that guy this year.
- 43:40It's not happening. You're waiting for more people
- 43:42to come up in the ranks to show themselves as the right person.
- 43:46So why not go with a guy who's a proven Pittsburgh guy, a proven
- 43:50leader, proven he can win. He has won the Super Bowl
- 43:54before. He did not do well in Dallas.
- 43:57But I think we're going complete opposite here.
- 44:00You're going from overbearing owner to do what you want, make
- 44:05my team win owner. I think it's a completely
- 44:07different scenario and I absolutely love it.
- 44:09I think personally, to answer the question you asked, the work
- 44:13tire, Kevin Stefanski, I think that's the work tire.
- 44:16I think that you watch that guy just decimate the Browns over
- 44:21the last how many seasons Deshaun Watson should do.
- 44:24Sanders. Dylan Gabriel?
- 44:26Yeah, he wouldn't coach the year, but guess what?
- 44:28He has. Fumbled the balls, by the way.
- 44:31Doesn't matter. He has fumble the ball so many
- 44:33times recently on that Browns team.
- 44:35He's rumors came out and if the rumors are coming out, that
- 44:39means it's probably some validity to it that he just
- 44:43didn't like Shoulder Sanders. I mean, there's a whole lot of
- 44:46conspiracy I can go into here with his wife's grandpa and
- 44:50Deion Sanders. I already talked about that.
- 44:52I don't know if we were recording it or not, but I have
- 44:54already talked about it. I just think that you are
- 44:56handing the keys to your team over to a guy who holds grudges
- 45:01and makes bad deals already and you are uncertain as as the
- 45:07Falcons. You don't have a quarterback.
- 45:09You have a wonderful offense, you have a great team.
- 45:12You don't have a quarterback. And who's the man that's fumbled
- 45:14quarterback hires? I mean, he shipped Baker
- 45:17Mayfield out. And then what has he had since
- 45:19then? Terribleness.
- 45:21He got Joe Flacco out of there, you know, brought him in, did
- 45:24great. Sorry, you're doing good.
- 45:25You're gone. He cannot be trusted to pick a
- 45:28good quarterback, and when he does get a good one, he ships
- 45:31him out. This is the wrong hire at the
- 45:33wrong time. I didn't think about that
- 45:34quarterback thing honestly, but I like that now that he's now
- 45:37that you mentioned that, I actually actually hate that
- 45:40hire. But that's good because I'm a
- 45:42Bucks fan and I hate the Falcons so.
- 45:44You should love that hire. As a Bucks fan, that guy is the
- 45:48worst quarterback guru I've ever seen.
- 45:51If Mike McCarthy's a quarterback whisperer, which he has been
- 45:53said before, Bruce Arians quarterback whisperer, worked
- 45:56with Tom Brady, worked with all these guys.
- 45:57Evan Svansky is the exact opposite.
- 45:59He's a quarterback killer. Metaphorically, of course.
- 46:03All right, well, Avery, who do you think is the worst coaching
- 46:05hire? I want to give a shout out to
- 46:08Stefansky. I kind of put him and what's his
- 46:12name, Hafley, Jeff Hafley. I hate that hire too.
- 46:16I. Just.
- 46:17Forgot about that. Look at that.
- 46:18And I'm like, oh cool, we got a middle of the road guy to go to
- 46:23a slightly lower than middle of the road team.
- 46:26This is going to be perfect. It just seemed like they just
- 46:30needed a guy. Yeah, it just, it just seemed
- 46:33like a warm body just like, well, we could, we could bring
- 46:37him. And you know, I thought, I
- 46:39thought the Packers underperform defensively.
- 46:42I thought the Micah Parsons thing was, I mean, maybe they
- 46:45just suffered from the hype they got when they got that
- 46:48acquisition, but grossly underperformed and then he fell
- 46:54upward. I completely agree with Will's
- 46:57take on Stefanski. I think he's garbage.
- 47:01I that's just me speaking personally.
- 47:03I don't even have any stats for that also comes from the Browns.
- 47:06I just think, cool, let's let's pull some, you know, toxic crap
- 47:10out of out of Cleveland and put him over here.
- 47:13The other one is I totally agree with Will on Mike McCarthy.
- 47:16Agree with basically everything he said.
- 47:18I think the connection is awesome.
- 47:20I think especially for the Steelers having that more kind
- 47:23of home grown feel or just sticking around with a coach for
- 47:25a long time. I think even if this isn't your
- 47:27guy, it's like, dude, you got a home grown dude here.
- 47:31As a Carolina fan, I like seeing guys that are from Carolina or
- 47:35went to Carolina. Being the coach, it keeps it
- 47:37all, you know, in the family, you know, and especially when
- 47:40you have a massive program like Carolina or like the Pittsburgh
- 47:43Steelers, I think that that's a great hire.
- 47:45Also, to be fair, from my perspective, I thought Mike
- 47:49McCarthy was great on the Packers, and then I thought when
- 47:51he went to the Cowboys, he was more of just like kind of the
- 47:54same thing as Jason Garrett, Wade Phillips, like he's just
- 47:58the yes man. Shot and time or no?
- 48:01Yeah, and and and I see it as like.
- 48:02You say yes man, doing whatever Jerry Jones says.
- 48:05Yeah. And so I, I see it as like I, I
- 48:07kind of just erase that from my memory as far as like what he's
- 48:11capable of. I don't think we've really seen
- 48:13that. I don't know if the Steelers are
- 48:15going to give him the full keys to the Kingdom.
- 48:18You know, I would like to see that.
- 48:19I'd like to see him step back into that because I thought him
- 48:21and Rogers were magical. I thought they were awesome.
- 48:25And so I I think that is an awesome hire.
- 48:27But yeah, I think Halfley is just kind of the most
- 48:32forgettable and just underwhelming hire.
- 48:36I think Stefanski, as much as I don't like that, I'm like, hey,
- 48:38maybe they do really great. I just don't see Halfley doing
- 48:41any better than Mike did so. Since Aaron was talking about
- 48:45the Dallas Cowboys, I'll let you guys know who I think is my
- 48:49least favorite coaching hire. It may not be the worst, but
- 48:51it's at least my least favorite coaching hire.
- 48:54I think the Bills hiring Joe Brady, it feels like a move that
- 48:57to Dallas Cowboys would make. It feels like the Bills front
- 49:01office called Jerry and said, hey Jerry, we just fired our
- 49:04head coach because we weren't good enough.
- 49:06You're the best at building teams that aren't good enough.
- 49:08How do we continue to be not good enough, Jerry?
- 49:10Oh, hire a guy from within who was part of the reason we
- 49:13already weren't good enough, let's hire Joe Brady.
- 49:15I hate this move for the Bills. I don't think this helps the
- 49:19Bills move the needle at all. I think they say the exact same
- 49:23because Joe Brady was already part of the reason that they
- 49:25weren't good enough. I think they're still going to
- 49:27be in that same tier of teams where they're good enough to
- 49:29make the playoffs, but they're not good enough to get it done
- 49:32in the playoffs. I don't think this move gets
- 49:34them anywhere. He's an offensive coach and
- 49:36great. The offense is still going to be
- 49:38good. They had the best rushing
- 49:39offense in the league. They've got Josh Allen.
- 49:41They do need a receiver, but without a a white number one
- 49:43ride receiver, they're already very good on offense, but what
- 49:46about defense? I understand that Josh Allen
- 49:49turned the ball over in that Denver game, but they also gave
- 49:51up 33 points. You need to have a defense that
- 49:54you can rely on in the playoffs, which the Bills do not have.
- 49:57And when you hire an offensive coach to do that, I worry about
- 50:01what's going to happen to that defense.
- 50:02Because an offensive minded coach is probably going to focus
- 50:06on building the offense so that they can score 35 points instead
- 50:09of 30 so that they can win when their defense gives up 33.
- 50:13Did you hear his press conference?
- 50:15He says. I am tired of people calling me
- 50:19an offensive coach. I am a head coach in the NFL.
- 50:23And he goes he goes on this ramp and like he used some words that
- 50:27I'm not going to say on this show.
- 50:29He basically said that like he can't wait till in practice,
- 50:32Josh Allen throws an interception and he used some
- 50:35explicit words there. And then he's he goes and I'm
- 50:39going to go celebrate with my defense.
- 50:41I was like, OK, like maybe this is what you need.
- 50:44You you need something, somebody in there to kind of fire up the
- 50:47guys because it's kind of been the same old, same old.
- 50:49But I don't like higher. But he he does say he is not an
- 50:54offensive coach. He is a head coach.
- 50:56I want to say to push back a little bit on on Joel's, I guess
- 51:00perspective. I think it's actually, I think
- 51:02it could be good. The reason I say that is because
- 51:05this feels like a grass roots hire more than a like a
- 51:09management hire. Josh Allen really likes this
- 51:12guy. And I feel like a the Bills have
- 51:14been right on the cusp for a long time.
- 51:17And I feel like at this point, you need fine tuning.
- 51:20You don't need a massive overhaul.
- 51:22You need to win in the last game that you need to, you need to
- 51:25pull it out. And I feel like with this, I
- 51:28feel like it keeps the culture intact, that hunger intact.
- 51:32It keeps all the same guys like you needed something, you needed
- 51:35something to change. So they got rid of their head
- 51:37coach and they brought in a guy that sounds like is a locker
- 51:40room favorite. I feel like at that point and,
- 51:43and kind of what Tim was saying, you know, he's like, I'm not
- 51:45just an offensive guy. That might have been the role
- 51:47that they've put him in or the opportunity that was available.
- 51:51But I feel like like most coaches, it's like I, I didn't
- 51:53get into coaching to be an offensive coach.
- 51:55I got into coaching to eventually be a head coach.
- 51:58That being said, I I like the idea of when you're right there,
- 52:02not completely overhauling everything kind of like what the
- 52:05Seahawks did like look what Will was saying.
- 52:09We got these pieces. I don't think this is going to
- 52:11take us to where we need to go. It is a team sport like Joel
- 52:14pointed out, but it's like these pieces need to change.
- 52:16We need something here. We need something that isn't a
- 52:20drastic overhaul that that could take us to the top and could
- 52:23also reset us. So having said that, just seeing
- 52:27that, you know, this seems to be one of those hires that was kind
- 52:30of dictated by the team rather than the front office or the
- 52:35fans of like, oh, who we want. I like that because it seems to
- 52:39have come originated at least from, I guess it was internal.
- 52:43It was an internal decision, which I like in general.
- 52:46Yeah, well, that's how you get head coaches like Chauncey
- 52:48Billups, and that's not what we need.
- 52:51And Brian Schottenheimer, he was an internal hire for the
- 52:54Cowboys. That's why I compared it to the
- 52:56Cowboys. It's literally the same thing.
- 52:58The only difference is is Schottenheimer was the offensive
- 53:00coordinator who didn't call the place and then was promoted to
- 53:02head coach, which makes zero sense.
- 53:05At least Joe Brady was calling the place.
- 53:06At least he was calling the place.
- 53:08Can I real quick, just you mentioned this coordinator hire
- 53:12that I just absolutely hate. I absolutely like, first of all,
- 53:16John Harbaugh going to the Giants.
- 53:17I think it was big. I was like, Oh yeah, this is
- 53:19cool that NFC East is about to be competitive.
- 53:22And then he goes out and brings in Matt freaking Naggy, who
- 53:27never called the plays in Kansas City.
- 53:29Andy Reid does. So now he has an offensive
- 53:31coordinator that didn't call plays.
- 53:33And I hate that move more than the Mike McCarthy 1.
- 53:36Ask any Bears fan, they'll tell you that Matt Naggy sucks.
- 53:39I don't need that sucks, so that checks out.
- 53:41There's a reason that Andy Reid called.
- 53:42We're back to that already, Will.
- 53:44We're back there already. It doesn't take.
- 53:48I think I've given the bears enough flowers for the whole
- 53:51season Back on Screw the Bears. Not metaphorically, of course.
- 53:59All right, Tim, give us your final thoughts and then we'll
- 54:02close out the show. Yeah, I mean, we're one game
- 54:05away from the season and there should be a really good
- 54:08offseason, great head coaching hires.
- 54:10A lot of teams got new head coaches, got new coordinators.
- 54:12I'm excited for Mike McDaniel to see what he can do with Justin
- 54:15Herbert. If, and I will say it right
- 54:18here, first on this show before anywhere else, if the Chargers
- 54:24do not improve this season, they will never improve.
- 54:28And they will be the same old Chargers and the same old
- 54:31Chargers and the same old Chargers.
- 54:33And they can't do anything with Mike McDaniel then I don't know,
- 54:37Like they're they're never going to win and I'll never see a
- 54:40Super Bowl in my life. But if he can do half of what he
- 54:44did with Tua, with Herbert, I think the offense will be a lot
- 54:48better. And I'm excited for this
- 54:50offseason. I'm excited for the draft.
- 54:52I'm actually about to go back and start watching the Senior
- 54:56Bowl and the Senior Bowl practice to start kind of
- 54:59getting my rookies to watch. So I'm pretty excited for this
- 55:02offseason. Well, Tim, it was good to have
- 55:04you. We're glad that your show is
- 55:05coming back. We wish you all the best on your
- 55:07show and your first episode back next week.
- 55:10Guys, it's officially the offseason for every team in the
- 55:14NFL. And so that means it's time to
- 55:16do some draft evaluations. So next week we will be doing
- 55:20some scouting reports. You're going to get a lot of
- 55:23this is a player who plays football type of stuff.
- 55:26So it should be good. Now we're going to try and we're
- 55:29going to try and avoid that. Stuff.
- 55:31We're going to try and avoid that stuff this year.
- 55:33We're going to do some scouting reports starting next week
- 55:36moving forward up to the NFL Draft, so I'm excited for that.
- 55:40And with that, guys, that's all we have time for on this
- 55:42episode. As always, don't forget to keep
- 55:45your balls played with. We'll see you next time.
- 55:47Bang, there you go. So Mark Davis's haircut still
- 55:50sucks.
