- 1:01Speaker 2: I don't think it's anywhere that's right. Stick around, Uh
- 1:05Speaker 2: time for us to score. Let's do some football talk.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Our pal Jeff Legwald stops by here on a Monday afternoon. Leggy,
- 1:10Speaker 2: how you doing, man.
- 1:12Speaker 4: I'm good. That's a pretty sweet. Prime.
- 1:14Speaker 1: That's not bad.
- 1:15Speaker 4: That's there.
- 1:16Speaker 2: They are right there are hanging on the windows. Fine items. Yes,
- 1:22Speaker 2: you don't get and you don't win a autographed Jeff legwalled
- 1:26Speaker 2: Washington General's cheerse.
- 1:28Speaker 3: What would you get? Would you get a pin? Would
- 1:29Speaker 3: he do a pen like an old writing utensil?
- 1:32Speaker 1: A typewriter? Do you own a typewriter? Leggy? Do you
- 1:35Speaker 1: still have an old school typewriter?
- 1:38Speaker 4: Indeed, yes I have. I have a vintage typewriter. Oh
- 1:42Speaker 4: look at that. That's so sweet.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, all right, Jeff, your your colleague Bill Barnwell
- 1:48Speaker 2: there at ESPN an interesting piece last week naming sort
- 1:53Speaker 2: of obscure stars of the NFL, so to speak. And
- 1:57Speaker 2: it was interesting the way he put him into category
- 2:01Speaker 2: best gadget player in the NFL. He said Marvin Mims.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Marvin Mims, who is has to do a lot of things.
- 2:09Speaker 2: He returns punts, he returns kicks, he runs the ball
- 2:13Speaker 2: out of the backfield, he lines up in the slot.
- 2:15Speaker 2: We saw his role grow more and more last year
- 2:19Speaker 2: as you have watched Mims develop as an NFL player,
- 2:22Speaker 2: former second round pick, a guy that we know that
- 2:25Speaker 2: Sean Payton likes a lot. What is the next step
- 2:29Speaker 2: in the evolution of Marvin Mims role on this team.
- 2:33Speaker 5: Well, the next step is the you know, the gadget
- 2:36Speaker 5: players are sort of the bonus, the dessert because he's
- 2:39Speaker 5: doing so much in the offense.
- 2:41Speaker 4: And I think that's the next step. And uh, I
- 2:46Speaker 4: think Peyton has alluded.
- 2:47Speaker 5: To it at times that the you know, the the
- 2:50Speaker 5: biggest impediment at moments for Mims and all of this
- 2:54Speaker 5: has been the Broncos.
- 2:56Speaker 4: You know, they you know, last season is still a
- 3:00Speaker 4: mystery to me.
- 3:01Speaker 5: And actually sat down and Marvin for a little bit
- 3:04Speaker 5: during Mini camp for a story that's coming later. But
- 3:08Speaker 5: he's very cognizant of when the opportunities came, so did
- 3:13Speaker 5: the production.
- 3:14Speaker 4: And I think that's his mindset is.
- 3:18Speaker 5: Give me the chance and I'll show you I can
- 3:21Speaker 5: do more than these things, you know, the gadget plays.
- 3:25Speaker 5: But he I think an awful lot of people in
- 3:27Speaker 5: the league I talked to, you know, GMS pro personnel guys,
- 3:33Speaker 5: they all believe that's sort of the the one undiscovered
- 3:38Speaker 5: element of the Broncos offense that could really be a
- 3:41Speaker 5: difference this year if they're smart about it and everybody
- 3:45Speaker 5: stays healthy.
- 3:46Speaker 4: And all of those things.
- 3:47Speaker 5: But that that's where a big jump could come his
- 3:50Speaker 5: involvement in all of this.
- 3:52Speaker 3: All right, I need to be educated because I thought
- 3:55Speaker 3: I knew what all positions in an NFL team were,
- 3:57Speaker 3: But I don't know anymore. Your guy, Adam Schefter tweeting
- 4:01Speaker 3: out that the Broncos hired Daniel Bruce Brucelavsky as chief
- 4:07Speaker 3: technology officer. He comes from the Golden State Warriors. What
- 4:11Speaker 3: is a chief technology officer?
- 4:15Speaker 4: Was? You know, the highest ranking official and technology? Well,
- 4:19Speaker 4: there we go, of course, there we go.
- 4:20Speaker 3: The chief is it going to make sure the draft
- 4:22Speaker 3: plans don't get hacked or something or what?
- 4:25Speaker 5: No, all of those things that's you know, cybersecurity, the
- 4:29Speaker 5: flow of information, the gathering of information, how they do it,
- 4:34Speaker 5: what software systems they have, what they use for game video,
- 4:40Speaker 5: you know, the tracking systems in practice that show how
- 4:43Speaker 5: fast the guy's running, how much running he did. All
- 4:47Speaker 5: of those things are under that umbrella. And you know,
- 4:52Speaker 5: fifteen years ago, not such a big position. Now, I'm
- 4:56Speaker 5: not sure a franchise could move without the right person
- 5:00Speaker 5: in that gig.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Is there a sense from this ownership group that, like,
- 5:05Speaker 2: because I've you know, I've read stories about the behind
- 5:09Speaker 2: the scenes with the Golden State Warriors that they were essentially,
- 5:13Speaker 2: you know, an advanced Silicon Valley operation that players from
- 5:17Speaker 2: around the NBA when they would arrive at Golden State
- 5:21Speaker 2: would just be like, you, guys have more stuff than
- 5:24Speaker 2: anyone we had ever been around. But it was also
- 5:26Speaker 2: it was dialed, it was honed. They knew exactly how
- 5:29Speaker 2: to use it. Is this one instance where the Broncos,
- 5:33Speaker 2: with the wealthiest ownership group in all of sports, can
- 5:36Speaker 2: basically look at it and say, well, we want the
- 5:40Speaker 2: very best guy. Let's go get the guy from San
- 5:43Speaker 2: Francisco that ran an NBA dynasty or at least that
- 5:46Speaker 2: department in an NBA dynasty.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Oh, there's no question, mat I've said before, there's no
- 5:52Speaker 5: salary cap on the rest.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Of the building.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's you want to know the benefits of
- 5:57Speaker 5: having not just the wealthy group, but the wealthiest group.
- 6:02Speaker 4: By a mile.
- 6:04Speaker 5: You know, the next five combined aren't as wealthy the
- 6:08Speaker 5: next five combined. NFL owners a very wealthy group, are
- 6:13Speaker 5: not as wealthy as the Broncos ownership group. So and
- 6:17Speaker 5: there's no cap on the support staff. They have a
- 6:20Speaker 5: very big and still growing support staff scouts, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 5: this technology department, they're you know, personnel, kitchen, support staff.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Whatever they want to do they can do. And all
- 6:35Speaker 5: they have to do is drive by and watch the
- 6:38Speaker 5: steel girders rising on a massive building. I mean it
- 6:43Speaker 5: will make the current team headquarters, you know, look like
- 6:47Speaker 5: a really nice guesthouse when it's all done. So they
- 6:52Speaker 5: are investing in those portions of the team, and it's
- 6:55Speaker 5: exactly what you're talking about. The salary cap constrains their
- 7:00Speaker 5: sort of their roster construction, but not the rest of
- 7:04Speaker 5: the building construction.
- 7:06Speaker 3: All right, speaking of what they want to do and
- 7:08Speaker 3: where they want to do it, have we learned the
- 7:10Speaker 3: actual new location of the stadium with the unveiling of
- 7:14Speaker 3: who's buying what over the last week?
- 7:16Speaker 5: Would you say, well, any you know, you and I
- 7:20Speaker 5: have talked about this, but that was the location or
- 7:24Speaker 5: the area. I had heard last season among people who
- 7:30Speaker 5: favored the downtown location for the Broncos that if they
- 7:34Speaker 5: remain downtown and elected to leave the footprint they're on
- 7:39Speaker 5: right now, that it would be in that spot because frankly,
- 7:43Speaker 5: that's the biggest chunk of available stadium land in a
- 7:47Speaker 5: downtown scenario that isn't where their current stadium is now.
- 7:53Speaker 5: It's a smaller footprint than the one they're on, So
- 7:56Speaker 5: I don't know if they would keep on trying to
- 7:58Speaker 5: purchase things to make it bigger. But that is the
- 8:02Speaker 5: spot I've heard now. You know again, I think to
- 8:06Speaker 5: say this is imminent until I hear something differently from
- 8:10Speaker 5: the team. Even privately, I would say none of this
- 8:14Speaker 5: is like really imminent, And they don't see it that way.
- 8:17Speaker 4: But I think they're getting everything in.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Order that when they decide to really really move ahead,
- 8:25Speaker 5: that they're going to be ready to do this. But
- 8:28Speaker 5: this is how it's often done, because if you're trying
- 8:30Speaker 5: to get a footprint, you don't want people to know
- 8:33Speaker 5: you're doing it because then the price goes up exponentially
- 8:38Speaker 5: and you end up having to pay people, you know,
- 8:41Speaker 5: many many times what the value of the property or
- 8:45Speaker 5: the business may be worth. But when I was in
- 8:48Speaker 5: Nashville and they wanted to build the stadium down with
- 8:50Speaker 5: the river, they had to buy out several businesses and
- 8:55Speaker 5: you know where people were. It's just part of trying
- 8:58Speaker 5: to put such a big thing where so many people
- 9:01Speaker 5: already live.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought the reporting that was done, The digging
- 9:05Speaker 2: that was done to kind of get this story out
- 9:07Speaker 2: there was pretty cool. Uh, yeah, it was.
- 9:10Speaker 1: It was Yeah.
- 9:12Speaker 5: Like I say, and you know, we at our place,
- 9:16Speaker 5: we don't really report these kinds of things because I
- 9:19Speaker 5: no longer worked for a hyper local Uh it's.
- 9:24Speaker 1: A local municipality issue, you know.
- 9:27Speaker 5: But I had been told last year by people who
- 9:31Speaker 5: knew of these things, that that that was the spot
- 9:34Speaker 5: to keep an eye on, and I had actually passed
- 9:37Speaker 5: that along to some folks. But I just think that
- 9:40Speaker 5: that's that's the one the business people around here believed
- 9:44Speaker 5: made sense, and that's the one where the the water
- 9:47Speaker 5: was already bubbling as it were, you know, last season.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Like I think those of us in this conversation, I
- 9:55Speaker 2: think a lot of people listening to this show, we
- 9:59Speaker 2: we understand and the revenue streams are lack thereof with
- 10:03Speaker 2: the current stadium that exist. But also there's gonna be
- 10:09Speaker 2: a lot of people that live in the city of Denver.
- 10:11Speaker 2: They're gonna look at this and go, that's stadiums not
- 10:13Speaker 2: that old. What are we doing paving over a whole
- 10:16Speaker 2: other swath of land in this city to build a
- 10:20Speaker 2: football stadium? What is going to be the Broncos sales
- 10:26Speaker 2: pitch to the community on why this is why it's
- 10:31Speaker 2: good and why it's going to benefit people.
- 10:34Speaker 5: Yeah, especially if they're going to be the owner and control.
- 10:38Speaker 5: You know, they're going to be their own landlord if
- 10:40Speaker 5: they do this, And I think that's why teams want.
- 10:44Speaker 5: You know, ultimately, your best revenue stream is if you
- 10:47Speaker 5: own the house as it were, and you know, they
- 10:50Speaker 5: don't technically own the state, and they control a lot
- 10:53Speaker 5: of what they can do with it, uh, but they
- 10:56Speaker 5: don't own it own it, and that you know, that
- 11:00Speaker 5: benefits them, how it benefits the city. I think you're
- 11:04Speaker 5: gonna have to frame that out because I think a
- 11:06Speaker 5: lot of what people used to use twenty thirty years
- 11:11Speaker 5: ago to prove it has long been debunked. Yeah, you know,
- 11:14Speaker 5: as far as economic impact and all those things. You know,
- 11:18Speaker 5: argue what you will about it, but you're basically building
- 11:23Speaker 5: an immense structure to be used primarily for you know,
- 11:29Speaker 5: ten ten events and then the team controls.
- 11:33Speaker 4: If you own the stadium, you.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Get to do all the other cool events too, And
- 11:37Speaker 5: I think that's the attraction for the team. I personally
- 11:40Speaker 5: think they will have a difficult time you know, like
- 11:44Speaker 5: you guys, I live here, and I think selling the
- 11:49Speaker 5: use of public money for something that will benefit a
- 11:52Speaker 5: very select.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Group of local businessmen, you know, i e.
- 11:56Speaker 5: The Bronco owners, I think that's a tough set this
- 12:00Speaker 5: day and age. Even though you know, we've seen people
- 12:03Speaker 5: in you know, Jacksonville and other places have have signed
- 12:07Speaker 5: on to do things. I think that would be a
- 12:10Speaker 5: tough sell here and I think that will be the
- 12:12Speaker 5: Broncos challenges. If they're going to ask for any public
- 12:16Speaker 5: money for infrastructure or any of that stuff. I think
- 12:20Speaker 5: that's where their salesmanship is going to have to come in.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Uh, you know, whether you know.
- 12:27Speaker 5: That's building the exits off the interstate, or how people
- 12:30Speaker 5: are going to get in and out of this this
- 12:33Speaker 5: place that doesn't have that, you know, those types of
- 12:37Speaker 5: construction right now.
- 12:38Speaker 4: I think that's the issue for them all right real quick.
- 12:42Speaker 2: By the way, if they fixed the the on ramp
- 12:45Speaker 2: from sixth Avenue East to I twenty five South to
- 12:48Speaker 2: build this stadium worth it.
- 12:53Speaker 5: I don't know anybody that would would say that that
- 12:55Speaker 5: isn't a huge selling point.
- 12:57Speaker 1: If that tam Yeah, if if they put that in
- 13:00Speaker 1: the bro sure, I'm buying it.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Well, my guys, it's straight hands. What a nightmare trying
- 13:04Speaker 3: to get back there now? All right, peak off season radio, Leggy.
- 13:08Speaker 3: But I was telling Nate, we're gonna talk about it
- 13:09Speaker 3: later on the week. I got caught up watching flipping
- 13:14Speaker 3: around Saturday looking for someone to watch, and along comes
- 13:17Speaker 3: the twenty fourteen opener against the Colts on NFL Network.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Nothing better on.
- 13:21Speaker 3: I have a football geek.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I'm like, I'll watch this, dude.
- 13:25Speaker 3: I forgot Ryan Clady was on that line, Chris Clark
- 13:29Speaker 3: was the right time, like, you know, Emmanuel Sanders just
- 13:32Speaker 3: got there.
- 13:32Speaker 4: They're running the football.
- 13:34Speaker 3: It was a good, good team, Leggy. I know the
- 13:38Speaker 3: Manning injury played into it. What the hell derailed that
- 13:41Speaker 3: team again?
- 13:42Speaker 1: Help me out?
- 13:43Speaker 4: What what do you remember?
- 13:44Speaker 2: What? Like?
- 13:44Speaker 3: What sent twenty fourteen down the drain? Cause, my god,
- 13:48Speaker 3: the opener. They look like a really fun team.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Oh that you know, some people would argue that may
- 13:55Speaker 5: have been there, you know, one of the best overall,
- 13:59Speaker 5: even better than the Super Bowl team in terms of
- 14:01Speaker 5: talent talent, But I just think after twenty thirteen, you know,
- 14:06Speaker 5: they set the record, they do something, it's going to
- 14:10Speaker 5: be very difficult for any offense to do again.
- 14:15Speaker 4: And then just get you know, obliterated in the Super Bowl.
- 14:18Speaker 5: I think they all came back, you know, Peyton, especially Manning,
- 14:25Speaker 5: with the intent on pushing so hard to fix what
- 14:28Speaker 5: went wrong in the Super Bowl. I think they just
- 14:32Speaker 5: basically ground themselves down that by the time they get
- 14:36Speaker 5: to the playoffs that year, they were just almost done emotionally.
- 14:42Speaker 5: I think that playoff loss that ends that season might
- 14:46Speaker 5: be one of the flattest games for a playoff worthy
- 14:51Speaker 5: team that I've ever covered. They just were not emotionally
- 14:56Speaker 5: in it, and I think they had just there was
- 14:59Speaker 5: no gas left in the tank by that time. I
- 15:01Speaker 5: think they had pushed so hard to fix it, but
- 15:05Speaker 5: that's what derailed that team. They were they were just
- 15:07Speaker 5: like done with it before they were really done with it.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that team faded hard at the very very and
- 15:14Speaker 2: one of the all time weirdest games I've ever attended.
- 15:16Speaker 2: By the way Jeff Legweld, everybody ESPN read his stuff
- 15:19Speaker 2: at ESPN dot com.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Leggie, great work. We'll talk to you later this week.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Take care of Dallas and see it
