- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to everyone to critic.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The show where a guest picked a movie rated below 40% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: It tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Janet Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Ten years later sees the error of his ways.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Guest today is a humor writer who has written places such as Second City and Reductress, Georgia Schenk.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: Hello.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Thanks for being here.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: I'm happy to be here.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: I'm excited.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: How are you doing today?
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: I'm doing great.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: How are you?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm doing good, thanks.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's very weird because I'm talking to like Georgia's uh webcam has stopped has stopped working, so I'm talking to like I'm just like talking to myself on a video.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Talking to my name.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Pull up my Twitter icon, you maybe you'll feel a little more at home.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, like um you just moved recently, didn't you?
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: I did.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: I just moved to Chicago not long ago.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: I live here now, and I am broadcasting live from my apartment with my chinchillas, and I am in my happy place.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Well, that's good.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I'm glad you're in your happy place.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: It's rare.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: How are you finding Chicago at the moment?
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's great.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: In the scheme of things.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: In this in the grand scheme of things, um, amazing.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Because it's a weird time to learn a new city because I'm really excited to be here and everybody else is not.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: And that's okay.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: I feel like it's topsy turvy.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean, Chicago's nice though.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's beautiful.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: It's currently like 98 degrees, which is not fun.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: Um, but other than that, it's a lovely place to be.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: We just had a what we call a heat wave here, but it was like probably max, I think like I don't know what the conversion is, but I think it's like 90 degrees, I guess.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: I'm guessing.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And that was just way too much for all of us.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: We were just because we don't have we're not used to it and we don't have like air conditioning or anything.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Well, like an English summer is typically not that great, if I recall correctly.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And then we had so we had like a week of that followed by I'm guessing like two weeks of like torrential rain.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, shall I compare these to an English summer's day?
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Just awful and rainy.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: But yeah, 98 would be awful right now.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I would not be grody.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: It's grody, it's really bad.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: So uh you came onto the podcast.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: You wanted to talk about the movie Uptown Girls.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I do.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: I will defend this movie uh to my grave.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Perfect, perfect.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: What made you pick it in the first place?
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: Um, I feel I first of all, this movie came out when I was a child, and I like as a child, you watch movies and you're like, this is the best movie ever.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: And then you have no concept of things like rotten tomatoes.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: And so as an adult, I learned, I was like, I wonder what that has.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: And I was just going through one day and I'm pulling it up right now.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to remember what the exact percentage of this is.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, I've I've got it up if you need it.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: You've got it up.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: I I need it.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: What is it?
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: It is 14%.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's which is awful.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: But look at the audience score, it's a 60% audience score, which means everyone's like, that's a fun that's a fine movie.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: And Rotten Tomatoes was like, no, it's not.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's the whole thing about this.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, it's it's ridiculous.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Wait, how old were you when it came out then?
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's a great that's a great point.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: I it came out in 2003, which means I would have been seven.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: So I was 14, so I was already used to old crit.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, definitely.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: But this is this is Britney Fan uh Brittany Murphy and her prime like peak Dakota fanning.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: Just like it's the height of Dakota Fanning.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: For both of them.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: The height of Dakota Fanning.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: After here, it's all uh it's all Twilight movies and her sister stealing the spotlight.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, her sister had really has taken over.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Came up from behind, no one saw it come in.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Although she's starting to do things again.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: She is I I what is she doing?
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: I saw her in um in uh Once Upon a Time in Hollywood recently.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Oh, you're absolutely right.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: She played Squeaky From.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean recall.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: Listen, that's a real life person.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: That was a pretty awful person.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, really?
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like a lot of the characters in that movie are not real.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: Like a lot of the Manson sisters are phoned in.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: They picked the real one who got her a nickname in a very awful way.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: Um, but that's a different story for another time.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: That's a different Dakota fanning.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a different podcast.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: But it yeah, this is like this is Dakota Fanning at the height of like her childhood, like child star uh kind of career.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: And uh it's when she was in everything.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: She was in so many things at the street.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: She was in so many things.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And she was always like the smart child as well, though.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: So this is like the perfect movie for her.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: SNL had that like precocious child bit where she would like interview other child stars and just terrify them.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: I wonder if that came from after this movie or if it came before that.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: I have no idea.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: I I feel like it came from this general time period.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: And then Britney Murphy was just obviously like she was she was having her like rom com phase at this time.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: I think she was just off of 8 mile too.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: So Yeah, that's right.
- 6:17unknown: Yeah.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: I always forget about 8 mile, it's okay.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: I don't even associate her with 8 mile.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Like it's weird.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Definitely very clueless and this and rom coms when I look back on it.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: So what like I guess did you see it when it first came out then?
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: I did.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: I think I was one of those kids who owned it on DVD.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, like my parents didn't give me like normal people movies.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: Like, I never saw any of the Disney movies.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: I never I've still never seen Star Wars.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: So, like my Star Wars, so it's I feel like very strange saying that though.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Like my scope of movies that like everybody's seen.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I don't know what you're talking about because I've seen the Cinderella story and Uptown Girls.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Hey, Cinderella story's been on the podcast already.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: I listen, if you hadn't done it already, I'd defend that one too.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: So many people wanted to do it.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Like it's so well like people love that movie.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: I can that move that scene in the uh locker room, just like delightful.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: I can't believe how many people love that movie.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: It's so good.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: But back to this movie, apparently this movie is well loved as well.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Like I've heard from from other from other people that I've spoken to about it, people love it.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: It's just a lovely romp of a film.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: I knew nothing, like I had no context from it from for it other than the like the DVD cover, which I saw everywhere at the time, and like I knew I knew she was some kind of like nanny to her, and that was about you must have been like, why the hell do they have a pig?
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that bring on the core.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: I didn't even like think about the pig, to be honest.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was one of those things you see and like never think about again.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like they're in New York City, Dakota Family looks upset, Brittany Murphy looks pretty, Britney Murphy, and then there's the pig.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: I did think it was a kid's movie, and it's not a kid's movie.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: It is not a kid's movie.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: There's so many things to it that were surprising me.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: I I had to look it up in the middle of the movie and see that it was like a it's a 12A here, so I guess it was a PG 13.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: I actually have no idea.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: I think it may have been classified as a PG here, but I have no idea how it felt under that scope.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Looking it I'm looking it up right now.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Okay, let's see, let's see.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: PG 13.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: So it did get a PG 13 here.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: It has no small children.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: But it feels like there's because that's I think that's what's makes it feel off to me, is that it's um there's so many adult themes to it, and then there's like the but it wants to be a kid's movie at the same time.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's like there's a charm to it that like um should be like it's trying to teach you a lesson.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: This should be a PG film, but it is not.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Um there are sex jokes right out the gate.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: So like let's describe I'm gonna just go over the the basic description of the like the synopsis first.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: So it's it's basically she is she is a multi, multi-millionaire, like inheritance.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Like she's inherited the money from her parents who died um in some kind of accident.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Do they make it clear?
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: They don't.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: I think it was her parents were like touring musicians, and like on one of the tours, something happened and they are no longer around.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: We can use our imagination.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: So she's worth like around a hundred million, basically.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Uh and then her basically what happens is her uh accountant runs off with the money.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: I love that scene because she's like, she literally winks at the like new accountant who's like, you don't have any money, and he she's like, Well, what can I like do for it?
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: And she like winks, and it's like this is not a kid's movie.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: And also she's supposed to be 22.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Right, which is horrifying to me as a 24-year-old individual.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm 31 and she's not she's like closer, definitely close to my age than she is to 22.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Um, oh no.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Um so uh so what happens is that she ends up taking on the this takes on a she tries to take on a one job first of all, but then she ends up taking on uh the job of being like a nanny to a um a very rich girl who's like um the daughter of one of her friend's like clients, I guess.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a music executive.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she so her friend is like a a music like agency dude, and the girl that she ends up working for is like the leader of that music agency, the executive or what have you.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: So like that that played the Heather Locklear as well.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: And Donald Faison is her best friend, or like one of her friends, uh, which is a nice like callback to Clueless.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Exactly, it's just like they're both back.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: So they do have like a nice like rapport with each other because they know each other.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: It feels like they do know each other well.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: That's that's what it felt like to me.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Um so that's the basic plot of the movie.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: And the little girl is also like very so basically Britney Murphy's character is very childish, and then Dakota Fanning's character is very like proper and wants to be an adult and wants to act like that, and she's like popping pills for some reason.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: She's a hypochondriac, she's like wiping everything down, never took the subway somehow.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, just lots of little things like that.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: But uh, so that's the basic plot, like basic synopsis of it.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Um so I think it's very I don't think they play up to some of the stuff enough.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: No, I agree.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: I feel like they could definitely have like leaned in, really gone for it, but no, I I I don't know.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: I love this movie.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: I think my favorite scene in it is definitely at the end, um, when she goes to the recital that her that Ray, the little girl's mother, skipped, and like it's all her father's guitar.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I just feel like it's very charming.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: I ripped it off um pretty heavily.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I did.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Um, when I was 15, my theater teacher gave us the instruction that we had to like choreograph a dance, and I totally jacked Dakota Fanning's like routine.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Which is funny because it's the first time she's kind of freestyling.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Um, my friends always describe this movie as George's two personalities hanging out with each other for an hour and a half.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: So your friends know your obsession with this movie then.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: Um in high school, my friends and I we had a movie night where we watched um, in this order, we watched the Lizzie McGuire movie, The Human Centipede II, and then Uptown Girls, which is just cinema icon.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Just classic after classic.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Just real upper crust taste and cinematography.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: And then you throw human centipede two in there to like break things up and just Oh yeah.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: No, we each got to pick a movie and we were like, let's uh watch something that like we like could have a good time to.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: And my best friend at the time was like, Human centipede too.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: We were like, You sure got that thing?
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: And it's pretty to be fair, it is miles worse than the original human centipede.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you've ever seen it.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: You definitely don't want to.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Um they they do get progressively worse, those movies.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: I've not seen and I say that as someone who's only seen like clips of each one, but the clips I've seen from each one, they are progressively so much worse.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: Count yourself lucky.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: I've avoided them for a good reason.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, good for you.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Have you seen them all?
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, no, no, I think I cut it off after the second one.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: It really did a number on my psyche.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: I think the third is the third one the one where it's well, I ask, like, is it the second one that's like the circle of them, or is it the s or is it the third one?
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I know the second one is filmed in black and white, and um it's just like this man who has gathered significantly more than three of them.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: I know there's like close to a hundred because his gate his goal was to make like an actual centipede.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: Um I think it's that one.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's a circle.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: So I think that one might be the third.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: That sounds horrifying.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: They were like, what if we just connected them?
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: Is that enough of a premise for a third film?
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Back to this uh Yeah, back to Uptown Girls.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Back to Uptown Girls, anyway.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Oh god, what a what a horrible distraction.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't have brought that up.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Um charming 14% life.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: What do you think is rated worse?
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: Uptown girls or human centipede 2?
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: It has to be the human centipede 2.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: I disagree.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: It has to be.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: I disagree.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: Let me see.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: I'm guessing like 3%.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, we'll see.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: What if it has like a negative?
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Hold on.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: 29% on Rotten TV.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: No! Uptown Girls did better.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: How?
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: The human set to be too.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: How is that possible?
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: I wish I could tell ya.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: This is I'm really doing a great job plugging uptown girls.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's so that's that's really upsetting.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: I'm distraught.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: I didn't know that.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: That just all that does is prove how bad the the rating system is on there.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: It's just there's no laws in Rotten Tomatoes.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Um but this I guess I was gonna say like how many times have you seen this movie?
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: Do you think triple digits.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Triple digits.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: In this point of my life, I am a I'm a bad free watcher.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: Like, if I just am in the mood for something, I don't care how many times I've seen it, I'll just like put throw it on, even it's just background noise.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: So it's got it's gotta be in the triple digits if not close.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: So would you say it's your most watched movie then?
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: What was that?
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Was it is it your most watched movie then?
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: No, no, that's sleeping with other people 2015.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: Um it's not even that old.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: No, that is it, I that's probably in quadruple digits at this point in time.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: It's a good movie.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: I don't think I've seen it more than once, though.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: I could have a whole podcast where I just make people watch that movie and then I just antagonize them about it for an hour.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Have you seen that?
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Um, have you heard about that podcast where they like re-watch um, I think it's oh what is it?
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: It's like grown-ups too or something.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: And they just watch that um once a week for fit for like a whole year, and then they just talk about it on a podcast.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: I feel like you could do that with one of these movies.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: I could do that, I could do that easily.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Only this time it's a good movie.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: I just I genuinely could do that with sleeping with other people and never run out of steam.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Um but uh so like did you come across it just because it came out uh this movie, uh Uptown Girls?
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: This movie, yeah.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, I was a child, it was marketed to me, even though it's for adults, which makes sense because I was also one of those like weird adult children.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: Um related to Dakota Fanning?
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: I yeah, I don't even remember.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: I think this is like my first experience with Dakota Fanning, and I I really did like it at the time.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: And I think as I when I I think like my max time where I was like, this is a great movie, I was like 15 years old.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: So it was like between that time frame.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: Um but I liked it when it came out, loved it when I was a teenager, and still think fondly about it as an adult.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: So that's been my experience throughout my life.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: So who do you rate relate to more now?
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Dakota Fanning or um uh Brittany Murphy's.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: For sure, for sure, Brittany Murphy.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: I I feel like maybe I'm a little more reined in than her, but it's not by much.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: It's Margin.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: I would hope so.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: Like I pay for everything myself, so at least there's that.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Um I like I said, it's definitely like the two facets of my personality, like completely with each other.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Britney Murphy's character is wild.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: Chaos.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: Just chaos.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Pure chaos.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Um so let's let's let's discuss the I'm gonna go over the like let's go through the plot then, and we can like pick things out as we go along.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: So it opens and it's Britney Murphy's character talking about fairy tales.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I think it might be Dakota fanning.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: Dakota fannings.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Sorry, yeah.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: You would know.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: You're like, I think I yeah, I think I'm you are right, yes.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: Um, it's somebody talking about fairy tales and like telling the story of a little girl whose parents were kings and queens and they died and they left her with the fortune, and it's Brittany Murphy like waking up, and that's the opening scene.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, on her 22nd birthday.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: At like 11 o'clock at night.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: I I wrote it down because it's it's crazy.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: It's 9 50 p.m.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: that the alarm goes off.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: It's so specific.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: It's very specific.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: And then her friends are calling her, like, where the fuck are you?
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: And she's like 9 50 p.m.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: And she rolls over and she thinks she rolls over to the pig is like a man because she's like, give me a second, baby, and I'll rock your world.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: I'll rock your world, yeah.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: I'm like, that is a pig, ma'am.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: And it's also like, okay, it's an indication of how many guys she's carrying over that she thinks.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: It could be anyone.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: Um, which is very insane to me.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: Um but just like she's like, okay, time to get ready.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: And then she crushes a lampshade because she doesn't have anything to put in her hair.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: So she takes like a sparkly little something, smashes it, and then Bobby pins it up in her hair.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: And I remember at like eight years old being like, that's fashion.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Well, you were the only eight-year-old that thought that, or like at least definitely, because Dakota fans immediately.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: She's like, nice lampshade in your hair.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Um, but then she like, as she's gonna about to go to the party, she opens the freezer and grabs like a handful of cash.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I you know what?
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: The other movie that did that is uh Coyote Ugly.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: So were people in the early 2000s just like stashing cash in the freezer?
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't remember that at all.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: Granted, I was pretty my parents were definitely not stashing cash in the freezer, and there's two movies that I've seen that do that.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: But also, she's like a she's she's got a hundred million.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: Why is she stashing cash in a freezer?
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, clearly her accountant didn't take all of it because he forgot the freezer coin.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Um maybe that's a way of like getting around that the account has stolen money and like she still has some money.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: I guess that's how okay, yeah.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, I guess that's how she like lives up until that point.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: She's like, thank God for this freezer money.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: She's just slowly working her way through it.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: More money than I have in my bank account right now, I'll tell you that.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, me too.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Me too.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Um, she runs out the door, literally, just like she's got like a greenhouse of like plants in her hallway.
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: They both have so many flowers for her birthday.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, everyone's like really angry at her for because she has so much stuff just lying everywhere in the hallway, and then like downstairs.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Um, there's just tons of presents.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: And I don't know.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: She's like, donate them.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: I don't think I've had friends in my life.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: No.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: But it also seems like she doesn't.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: Based on the rest of the movie.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: Based on the rest of the movie, no.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Just very shallow um presentry.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: Um literally bolts into the middle of the street and almost gets hit by a car.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: So you just like really see the kind of human that this is.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: No regard, keeping money in freezers, running in the streets, donating presents.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I mean, I'm just I'm watching this and I'm just like, what a fun gal.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: This is the life for me.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: This is the life I'm going to Chicago for.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is what I this that would be my peak.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: Uh currently you can't see it, but I I live in like um I live in a Molly Gunn's apartment, and there's tons of freezer cash just trying to recreate the dream.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: What a dream.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Um, but then she like she runs to her party, which she seems to know about, but then it's also a surprise party.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's like, okay, I'm just going to the bar with 50 of my closest friends.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Um and then she's like, oh my god, it's all for me.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: Uh it's a it's a jerk, it's a dream.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: And like the the guy, uh like one guy goes to hit on her and he's like, You're 22?
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: I'm I that's so old.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: I'm 19, and that's first of all.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: What 19 year old is like, I'm old.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: He's like, you look great for 22.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: The only time that's ever been said in there.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: And like, also, he looks 32.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: He does not look 19.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: No, no, he's he for sure looks like he's in his like 30s.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Everyone in this movie is way too old for their part.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Except for Dakota Fanning, who for some reason looks younger than eight, if that's even possible.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: Looks younger than eight, somehow acts older than eight.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know what she was when she was.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: I don't know what she was on.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: I feel like she was just playing herself in this movie.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: I wrote down at this point though, like during this time, like I I wrote down stop spinning the camera.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: The director is trying so much.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: Oh, 100% The director in this movie, like, at least in the opening 15 minutes of this movie, he he is trying so hard to like make a fancy movie.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: Like with all the all these shots, uh there's like one scene where it pans up from so it pans down from a uh from a skyscraper and it and then you see it like pan up and it's actually like a reflection and it goes up into like her walking somewhere.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: And it's just like you don't you don't need that in this movie.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: No, I mean like I feel like the further along in the movie it gets though, it gets more self-aware.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: I kind of like stopped noticing it.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: I feel like you just get you're like, okay, whatever, this director, get a little guy.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: It was mostly like the spinning camera he was trying so much at the start that was just like this is making me queasy.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: And like the he'd come off of like um I gotta look it up.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: He'd come off of some other like big movie.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: Um direct to make this.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Let me see.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: Directing that was Yankee.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: I've never heard of him.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Remember the Titans.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: Remember the Titans he came off of, yeah.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Oh, let's see what else he made.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: He made Prince of Persia and Now You See Me.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: Which, you know, I would not connect any of these movies.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: No, he just wrote those two, though.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, you're right.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: He he directed Uptown Girls and Remember the Titans.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: Again, though, two movies that do not seem like in the same wheelhouse at all.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: No, but then he also it looks like he produced Hostel in Hostile Part 2.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Which makes even less sense.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: What an interesting fella.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, to be Boaz, yeah, I can we should uh like invite him on to discuss this.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Like, what's what's your deal?
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Are you just trying like every genre?
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: He's just like really like making the most of his time.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, so they're at the party and she's in the bathroom because somebody was like nice forehead wrinkle, and she's like trying to figure out what's wrong with her face, and she turns into an older woman, and then Dakota Fanning like accosts her at this point.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: That's another thing.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: She imagines herself as an older woman.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: None of that sort of like fantasy element ever plays a part of this movie again as well.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: No, no, it's the only time it happens, and it's so jarring, it's really jarring.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: It's just like suddenly there is.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: I know, like, it's just horrifying to me.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: I was saying, like, on the podcast that got released last week, um, or this week, uh, that we did uh we were talking about burlesque, and there's a scene in it where um there's a uh so there's a guy in the burlesque cub, and all he does is um his his whole thing is just to watch see uh Alan Cumming uh make a face underneath a woman.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: Uh he's like underneath her vagina and making a face.
- 30:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, oh no.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: And the guy looks and does this the the biggest spit take you will ever see, and that's his role in the movie.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: And it's like we were saying that can you imagine like that's the Oh my god.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: So it's like I feel so bad for these bit part actors.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Genuinely awful.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: It's so terrible, like like this the stuff that these people get cast in, and you like you have to be you have to be happy about it as well, because like nothing else you can do.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: Imagine being like that woman's family and her being like, I'm in a film.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: You go to support your mom or your grandma, it's like grandma.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: I don't think I would have taken this away from you.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: But did they use prosthetics?
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: No.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: I hope they did.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: Oh, for her sake.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: But uh, yeah, she leaves basically she talks to her, and then um uh what's her name?
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: Dakota Fanning's character.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: Uh what is her name?
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: Ray is the name of the character.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: She um they talk to each other, and um Donald Faison drags them, drags, fine, walks into the bathroom, drags her out of there because he's supposed to be looking after her.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: Right took her to a bar.
- 31:43SPEAKER_02: Right, where her mother also is.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Her mother is also there, not interested in the slightest.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: No, no, absolutely not.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: He at one point has to be like, don't talk to your mother, and she immediately ignores him.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Don't talk to your mother because he she's talking to Nas.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: Nas is there.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: She's like a Nas cameo for months, and this is randomly a wild Nas appear.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: Why is he in this movie?
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Maybe he like owed somebody a favor.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: He has no connection to anyone in this.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: I know this is like very two minutes ago in our conversation, but I'm on IMDB, and old lady was a real woman that they cast.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: Oh poor woman.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: I know, but yeah, Nas is there, old lady is there, they're having a hip and happening time at this party.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Um and then that guy, um, and then uh Neil Fox, who is the like the new guy that they've been like at Donald Faison's discovered.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: Um he decides he's gonna who's what's like not that great of a singer, really.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: Not that great of a singer, not a great, not a great songwriter.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: Not really that great looking.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: He's just like he's just distinctly average, very average fella.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: Um not a good person either.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely not.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: But he's there, everybody's in love with him.
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: Molly's like, can I have him for my birthday?
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: Could not be less interested in her.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Because he's got some kind of celibacy thing going on for some reason.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: Um which is immediately broken.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: Why does he go home with her if he's like, I'm celibate?
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he knows nothing about like her or her family until he gets to the apartment.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: No.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: No.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: Like, what is he doing going back anyway?
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Like, he knows that's what's going on.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: I know, exactly.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: Not to like slut shame him or anything, but it's fine, you can do what you want.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: But like you know.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: I also want to say she calls him a rock and roll poet sex god.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: Which is just I remember at 15 being like, that that's like the like the descriptor.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Rock and roll poet sex god.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: He's and she's at that point she'd seen him for like 30 seconds.
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: But you know, who amongst us hasn't dated their share of rock and roll poet sex?
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: It's a rite of passage.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: Right, especially at 22.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, if they're more like that guy, then it's probably a realistic thing for everyone.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, if she goes back to her apartment, the lights are not working.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's like, uh, can you wait outside for a second?
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: Somehow lights candles and like brings him in.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: I think they like they just like go out on her balcony and eat pez candy.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because uh like she no, first of all, she tells him about he like wanders into her like guitar room.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: Right, like a shrine to her dad's guitars, right?
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: And then she finds out he finds out like her about her dad being this guy and everything, and blah blah blah.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, immediately starts singing the song her dead dad wrote for her, which is like just jarring as a person with a dead dad, awful.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: Zero out of ten would recommend that.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: But he's just like, yeah, he wrote that for me and then he died, and then he's like and I feel like he would know that if he's such a fan.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: But he's just like so fan fangirling at this time, which is for sure why he stays, right?
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: Like oh a hundred percent.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: He stays for so long.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: But he'd like, but before that, he's like, they're on the balcony.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: I want to like talk about this because he's so weird.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: It's like they talk, they he talked about his sobriety and um his like I don't know, some kind of I missed like the entire I missed the exact description of it, but it's like some kind of like religious thing, almost kind of like spiritual.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: He's like he gives us like weird spiel about how like when he wants to do something, he just doesn't do it.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: And it's like I feel like maybe that's not as deep as you think it is.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: Um if I don't want to do something, I do it immediately.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: It's like alright.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's not a good idea, because like personally, I would never do heroin.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: And with your philosophy and does that mean does that also mean he didn't want to?
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: Does that also mean he didn't want to go back to hers, and then so he decided so he had to go to it and then he didn't want to sleep with us?
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: If the car is coming back into the street and like I don't want to run out into traffic, does that mean in your world you do it?
- 37:02SPEAKER_02: Um, just like a very fascinating guy with weird, questionable morals to begin with.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: But the morals morals are immediately broken as well.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Immediately broken.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: He's just like, remember how I said I wouldn't sleep with you?
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: Turns out now I'm gonna do it.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Um because he feeds her pears, which she just keeps going, peas.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Pez.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: Pears.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: That's all she says to him.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: That's how I eat is I just like find a man and I'm like, pasta.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: Pasta.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: It's also like the least like sexy floating as well.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: No, it's just it's it's rough.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: Um I'll be like, are you okay?
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: And then they do the weird PG-13 thing where they kiss, and then the camera like floats up into the sky, and then he's been there for like clearly three days, right?
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: And you find out he won't leave.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: He was he's been singing his song, and she like holds up her foot to his face, and he's like, What are you doing?
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: She's like, I knew it, purple's your color.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's not interested, she's not interested in any part of his personality.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: No, she doesn't like his music.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: She's just but she's right, the music is bad.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: It's bad, she's right and she should say it.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: Um and then she like goes into her bathroom and she calls her friend, she's like, I'm feeling suffocated, he won't leave.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: And then immediately he's immediately like, I've gotta leave.
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: She's like, No, it's not it's literally the next the next thing that happens.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: It's not even anything between that.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: It's the next thing, I'm feeling suffocated, I need to leave.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: Wait, no.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, and like I I I noticed there's not a there's not a lot of phone like cell phones in this movie.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: It's very jarring, but the same thing.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, it is 2003, so there's only I had a phone at that point.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: I I mean, listen, I was like seven and I was very close to getting one myself, but um they weren't like around like how they were today in any sense.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: I wasn't going and using my like landline to call my friends though.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, true, true.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: Well, also, how is her landline working if her electric got shut off?
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: Another, yeah, the freezer, the TV, like there's a lot of stuff.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: How's her cache doing in the freezer?
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: The cache has melted then, so what can you say?
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: Um but the yeah, so he leaves and she's really ups, she's upset that he wants to leave.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: Um what happens here?
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Like she goes and she finds out about like everything being disconnected, I guess.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because her yeah, uh her friend comes and visits.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: Her friend comes because she's like a rack, and she's like, How long has your electric been shut off?
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: And she's like, I don't know.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: And she's like, Who takes care of your money?
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: And then names get count and they wind up in the office where he's like, and he ran away.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: And Bob Kapowski.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: She's like Bob.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: Um I'm pretty sure he's the only one that gets a full name in this movie.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: It's not true.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: Molly Gunn, Neil Fox.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: Great raish line.
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: Um, okay, okay.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: Everybody's got nose.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: Bob Kapowski is a memorable name.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: Bob Kapowski is definitely memorable.
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: And then Brittany Murphy's just trying to make herself feel better.
- 40:45SPEAKER_02: And she's like, they come back, they always come back.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: And he's like, no, they absolutely do not.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: She's like, you'll never see him again.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: Money's gone.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which doesn't seem to hit her that hard.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: No, she's like, oh.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: If I lost a hundred million, I would be distraught.
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, for sure.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Even at 22, I feel like I would have been like, My money.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, but he's like, So what are you gonna do for money now?
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: And she's like, What do you think I should do?
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: Get a job, yeah.
- 41:23SPEAKER_02: And then her friend gets her a retail job, which she immediately like destroys.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because she she goes and buys sheets from the retail from the place, right?
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: Like very, very expensive sheets.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: Very expensive sheets.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: Um, clearly, she is still floating off of freezer money at this point.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: Um, because she has to have a yard sale for all of her clothes, which I don't know how many yard sales you've seen in New York.
- 41:54SPEAKER_02: I have seen none.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: Um I've never seen one.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: I've seen like stuff dumped on the street.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: I've never seen a yard sale there.
- 42:01SPEAKER_02: Immediately someone would come and jack your stuff.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: Uh 100%.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: So that happened.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: She her friend like forces her to sell all of her shit, and then she loses the retail job.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: Because she falls asleep, she crashes at work and falls asleep in the bed.
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: And then um, she burns down her best friend's like apartment, or like she definitely sets off a fire, and her friend's like, You gotta go somewhere, and the pig's gotta go too, and she takes it to Donald Fay.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: Yes, it's yeah, like right.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: Alright, but first of all, she's looking after uh Ray at this point before she moves.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: I don't think we've even mentioned the pig at this point.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she has the pet pig.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: It's for some reason, yeah.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: Its name is Moo.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: She got it in Thailand because she was gonna be fed it and she didn't want to be fed it.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: And then that's the whole purpose of the pig in the movie.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: There's not really anything.
- 43:09unknown: Yeah.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: Dakota Fanning is never like bothered by the pig.
- 43:12SPEAKER_02: No, she's not a pig.
- 43:14SPEAKER_02: She does not like the pig.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: She's like, She's not bothered by it though.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: Which she would like, you'd think if she's such a hypochondriac with germs and everything, she would be like really against it.
- 43:25SPEAKER_02: Well, the thing is, pigs are very clean, so I think like once she learned that, she's like, ah, okay, so this pig is a hypochondriac too.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: I don't know, like I'm kind of disgusted by pigs.
- 43:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: Okay, so we we meet Dakota Ferning for real this time.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: She's just like, oh no, you're my new nanny.
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: And uh she gets she's like, Oh, I need to get some uh I need to take my pills.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: I don't what is she on?
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: She's on just like
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: No, I feel like it's Xanax, and I d I don't know why I feel that way because I don't think it's ever named.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: Um It has to be something like that.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: It has to be.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: You also learned she's been on she's been seeing a seeing a therapist since she was three.
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Which I mean same.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: I have two.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: But wait.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: Obviously not three though.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: No.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: No.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: Three is I I don't I can't even imagine that.
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: What would you have to say?
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: No, like I I feel like I was for sure in therapy around that time.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: But I had like a much more messed up life than Dakota Thai in this movie.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: It's the it's justifiable.
- 44:50SPEAKER_02: It's not like some child therapy is like a jaunty little thing.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: Like they give you like dolls and like crayons, and they like talk to you about what you're doing with them.
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: And it's like I remember at the time being like, I feel like they're reading into this a little too long.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: Again, I was one of those weird adult children.
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: You really were.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: This is like this is making so much sense.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: This is this is you in this movie.
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, Ray, Ray's place is very clean compared to compared to Molly's.
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: She has everything is in its place.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: Um she could live in a COVID world at that age.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, I can't even imagine her living in a COVID world what she would be going through right now.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: I can't I feel like she'd be fine.
- 45:51SPEAKER_02: Like it's pretty much on par with what she's already doing.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: Like that's the level of hypochondria this child has.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then her uh father is in a coma.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: Her father's in a coma.
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: Which is never addressed, really.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: It's just like he's just there.
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: What's why is he in a coma?
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 46:09SPEAKER_02: Uh her mother does not seem to care.
- 46:11SPEAKER_02: And the and Dakota Fanning's like, yeah, that's my dad in the coma, we don't talk about it.
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: But it's clear she's like repressing things as well.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: Because she's just constant, she's constantly angry at everything.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: And um, but they get into a basically like when she goes there, uh Molly starts like eating, like messing around with things.
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: She like pretends to be like a plastic, yeah, and then Molly tries to take a bite and like um just started standing immediately lights into her.
- 46:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: And they fight and she quits, and then she gets kicked out of that apartment.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: Uh she gets kicked out of her apartment, sorry.
- 46:56SPEAKER_02: Her apartment, okay.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: Um and then she goes to stay with Neil and he ignores her.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: Like he does not answer the door.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: What a horrible guy.
- 47:12SPEAKER_03: Where is the appeal with this dude?
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: He's just staying like so he can go stay with her for a week, but he went she can't stay.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: But that's it.
- 47:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:25SPEAKER_02: He's like, I'm back to my sex celibacy because it's benefiting me now.
- 47:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: I need to write my one song again.
- 47:33SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: So she goes to stay with Ingrid instead, and she gets a job back with Ray and sells all her stuff on the street.
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: Oh god, yeah.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: Um yard sale happens, okay.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: Which yeah, she's like selling a golf club that she doesn't want to sell because Tiger Woods gave it to her.
- 47:55SPEAKER_00: Just random things like that.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: It's all the stuff you expect.
- 47:57SPEAKER_02: Right, exactly.
- 47:59SPEAKER_02: You know, what don't we all have lying around in our closet?
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: And then you find out Ray's dad's a vegetable, as they refer to him.
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: Uh, which is a lovely sentiment.
- 48:13SPEAKER_02: Um she's so glad this eight-year-old girl knows that about and she accidentally burns Neil's jacket.
- 48:25SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 48:25SPEAKER_02: Why does she still have it?
- 48:27SPEAKER_02: Okay, she continue, she's got his jacket.
- 48:29SPEAKER_02: Like, first of all, if you were him, wouldn't you have walked in the door just to see if she had your jacket?
- 48:35SPEAKER_00: No, he's looking at her from the window, though.
- 48:37SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 48:37SPEAKER_00: You can see her from the window.
- 48:39SPEAKER_02: Like, this bitch doesn't have my jacket.
- 48:40SPEAKER_02: I'm not letting her in.
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: And it's his lucky jacket, which I mean, what could that even possibly mean?
- 48:48SPEAKER_00: Like, what's his lucky jacket, but he's not done anything.
- 48:51SPEAKER_00: So, like, how is it his lucky jacket?
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: He hasn't even finished that song.
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: It was just decided.
- 48:59SPEAKER_02: So she burns the jacket, and then like she sews like purple and like leopard print fabric onto it.
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: It's horrible.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: Horrifying.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: And Ray gets into a fight over at school over uh another nanny calling her uh Molly like a like a slut or something.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, slut.
- 49:23SPEAKER_02: And you can just see Dakota Fanning is just like breaking character and can't believe that she's allowed to see this.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: I get to say these rude words.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: That's so fun.
- 49:35SPEAKER_02: And like she quotes her and says like au pair and like air quotations, as if that's like so much fancier.
- 49:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, I bet I'm willing to bet like up uptown uh upper west side New York people call them mo pairs.
- 49:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, they do, they definitely do.
- 49:54SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't understand to this day what the difference is.
- 49:58SPEAKER_02: I think one is just like foreign and the other one has been able to gather.
- 50:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, one is fancy and comes with an accent, and the other one does not.
- 50:11SPEAKER_02: The other one's a 22-year-old multimillionaire that lost all her money.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: That's a nanny.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: Um that's a nanny.
- 50:19SPEAKER_02: That's the definition, if I remember correctly.
- 50:23unknown: Yeah.
- 50:25SPEAKER_00: Um and so but then you find out Neil got a record deal somehow off of this like awful monotone song.
- 50:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:34SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, it's so bad, and the jacket is fixed, but he can't see her anymore.
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: Um, he doesn't want to see her anymore.
- 50:48SPEAKER_02: When he hates the jacket, he can't believe what she's done to it.
- 50:52SPEAKER_02: Which he's an awful guy, but fair.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: I would be angry about the jacket, but like it's fine, like so many worse things have happened in this movie.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: Lucky jacket.
- 51:05SPEAKER_02: So Ingrid kicks Molly out, Molly goes to live with Huey, and then like oh god, she somehow Molly goes and like spends the night with Ray.
- 51:20SPEAKER_02: And then Neil is in the apartment.
- 51:22SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 51:24SPEAKER_02: So this is when we find out that Neil is like sleeping with Ray's mother, like the music executive, which has to be how he got that awful song signed.
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: It's definitely how that happened, but like also never addressed again.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: No, not once is this addressed again.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: No.
- 51:43SPEAKER_00: And how is this not a Oh goodness?
- 51:49SPEAKER_02: I love this movie.
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: But like when they're on I just want to talk about when they're on Coney Island, because it's like very it's like very important to the the the actual like the later part of the plot.
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: It definitely is.
- 52:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they she drags her to Coney Island, makes her eat a hot dog, and they go to they go to go on the teacup ride.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: Uh because she's never she's never been to a like an amusement park.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: No, she's never been to an amusement party.
- 52:15SPEAKER_00: She's never had fun, is what we're learning.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: And they're a week early for the rides.
- 52:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:24SPEAKER_02: It's just completely shut down, like nothing is there.
- 52:29SPEAKER_00: So they went to Coney Island to get a hot dog.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: Which, like, those are good hot dogs.
- 52:36SPEAKER_00: I will I will admit.
- 52:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll give them that.
- 52:39SPEAKER_02: Like, it wasn't that much of a failure of a trip.
- 52:42SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't know.
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: I'd be fine, but Coney Island's a trick to get to as well.
- 52:47SPEAKER_02: I've I've never been.
- 52:49SPEAKER_02: Um, but like I feel like the day could have been saved if she just took her to Times Square and made her hug one of those German-infested amos.
- 53:00SPEAKER_00: Yes, a hundred percent.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: I mean it's the same experience as Dizzy.
- 53:08SPEAKER_03: Oh okay.
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, those I I'm just thinking about the time that I was coming up the stairs in Times Square, coming up one of the subway stairs, and someone one of them was getting changed.
- 53:26SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: I was like, this is awful.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: I don't want to say this right now.
- 53:31SPEAKER_02: It's awful, just terrifying.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: It was yeah, they just had like the it was one of the elmos.
- 53:43SPEAKER_00: It was very funny.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:45SPEAKER_02: Um I didn't know because I hadn't been to New York for the first time until I was like 14 years old.
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: I didn't know that you were supposed to tip the Elmos.
- 53:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I had no idea.
- 53:58SPEAKER_02: And like my I remember jokingly being like, Mom, we should take a picture with one of the mascots.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: She's like, no, you have to tip them.
- 54:07SPEAKER_03: I'm like, oh, okay.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's my first warning to people.
- 54:13SPEAKER_00: Like, oh I've also like I know it because I'm in London as well, so like this is the same thing here.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: So right, right.
- 54:21SPEAKER_00: And then like the first time I went there, I was 20 years old, so I I was aware.
- 54:26SPEAKER_02: That's fair.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, like they they talk about they talk about um being scared about everything.
- 54:39SPEAKER_00: Which is a nice scene, actually.
- 54:41SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, it's a it's a it's a nice emotional scene, and like frankly, if they kept the tone of that scene consistent throughout the rest of the movie, maybe would have scored better than 14%.
- 54:52SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, then they you learn Neil sleeping with um Ray's mom.
- 54:59SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: And she immediately runs out, jumps into Central Park waters.
- 55:05SPEAKER_00: Yes, which jumps from overbridge, gets sick immediately.
- 55:10SPEAKER_00: Of course, because it's revolting, it's so disgusting.
- 55:13SPEAKER_02: It's so gross.
- 55:14SPEAKER_02: It reminds me of that video that went viral.
- 55:16SPEAKER_02: Like, I at this point in time, it would have been last week for us.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: Uh of the woman's like three months ago, but it was last week.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: The woman like diving off the boat in front of uh the Statue of Liberty into the Hudson River.
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: Just like that is famously radioactive, and she's I think she's Spider-Man now.
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely, yeah.
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: Starring an Olivia Wilde's adaptation of Spider Woman.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: I will watch.
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: Um she gets sick, and then they go to um she tells basically um Ray wanders off to see her dad again.
- 55:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she tells her dad, she's like, go talk to him.
- 55:59SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it helps when people in comas talk to their family members, which is awful when you know what comes next.
- 56:06SPEAKER_02: She's eighty.
- 56:09SPEAKER_02: First of all, you see Neil's meal.
- 56:14SPEAKER_00: It's horrible, but there's there is a scene right between it though.
- 56:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 56:18SPEAKER_00: Where you f you see Neil's like 80s music video.
- 56:24SPEAKER_00: It's just like really shitty music video.
- 56:27SPEAKER_00: Which makes the song so much worse.
- 56:29SPEAKER_02: So bad.
- 56:30SPEAKER_02: There's no way the song wouldn't have been popular in 2003.
- 56:33SPEAKER_00: The song would never be popular.
- 56:34SPEAKER_00: That that's not a it's a bad song.
- 56:38SPEAKER_02: It's a bad song.
- 56:41SPEAKER_00: But he's like also, I we didn't mention that he like took he took a chorus from from her about Egyptian cotton sheets.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: He's she's like, yeah, these are my sheets, and they're made of Egyptian cotton.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: And he's like, you know, that could be a good hook.
- 57:00SPEAKER_00: Well, it has nothing to do with it, and it's like a bad it's a bad hook.
- 57:04SPEAKER_00: No, it's literally na na na na na na na na sheets of Egyptian cotton repeated for like three verses laced within like this sultry try to be sexy, like popsicle.
- 57:21SPEAKER_02: Everybody's in like everybody's in like PJs and like hitting each other with pillows, and he's wearing his like god-awful jacket.
- 57:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's wearing the jacket.
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: And she's like, he took my jacket and he wrote about my sheets.
- 57:37SPEAKER_02: She's so upset.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: Then it cuts back, and we find no, she gets a call.
- 57:43SPEAKER_00: Uh no, it's not a call.
- 57:44SPEAKER_00: Someone shows uh the doorman shows up.
- 57:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, with the pig.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: And because at this point, Ray has been living with the pig.
- 57:52SPEAKER_02: Like the pig lives with Ray.
- 57:54SPEAKER_02: And she had just finished telling her comatose father, she's like, you know, I have a pig, and pigs they seem dirty, but they're actually very clean.
- 58:03SPEAKER_02: And this is what she's like chosen to talk to her like vegetable father about.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: And it turns out that Molly's whole speech about, you know, you talk to your family, and they're in the coma.
- 58:16SPEAKER_02: There's signs that it could help them.
- 58:18SPEAKER_02: Total opposite, because her this eight-year-old girl, literal child, after being convinced that like maybe it will save his life.
- 58:28SPEAKER_02: Her dad, like, pieces out.
- 58:30SPEAKER_02: He's like, I'm just gonna die.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: Now is the time.
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: It's so awful.
- 58:39SPEAKER_02: Like, it's just a cruel scene to write.
- 58:44SPEAKER_02: And so obviously Molly is fired because I think I would have fired my nanny.
- 58:56SPEAKER_03: It's so cruel.
- 58:59SPEAKER_00: But uh Neil comes back into her life and he wants her this time because he's like, You're my lucky, you're my lucky charm.
- 59:05SPEAKER_03: You're my lucky charm.
- 59:06SPEAKER_00: You're my muse.
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: You're my muse.
- 59:13SPEAKER_00: But she's like, she's you see, she's progressing because she turns him down.
- 59:16SPEAKER_00: She's moving.
- 59:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, listen, I love that speech where she's like, You all you want is to take from me, dude, and I've got nothing left to give.
- 59:24SPEAKER_02: And it's like, oh honey.
- 59:29SPEAKER_02: Poor girl.
- 59:32SPEAKER_00: Thinking about that, he immediately takes from after this.
- 59:36SPEAKER_00: When you think about it.
- 59:40SPEAKER_00: Because there is an auction, she has to put all of her dad's guitars up for auction.
- 59:45SPEAKER_00: And there's a mystery, but that they're not selling for very they're not going up for very much, they're going up for at two and a half grand each.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: And um, but then there's a mystery caller uh who wants to bid 75 grand for the whole lot, uh, which she takes because she likes fine.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_00: Um, and she with that money, I guess she gets a new apartment, which is just a normal apartment.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_00: It's the standard apartment.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_02: It's just like what I live in now.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_00: It's a realistic apartment.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_02: It might, yeah, seriously.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_00: It might be the most realistic apartment I've ever seen in a New York movie.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_02: But she's fine, she's happy.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she doesn't even seem that bothered by it.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_02: Um it's like good for her.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_02: We're seeing some character progression.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_02: Still not entirely clear what her job is at this point because she no longer works for Ray.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_00: No, but she's got 75 grand at this point.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but that listen, that'll be enough for like two, three years.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_02: You gotta, you can't survive off of that.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_00: No, but it's been it's been like what two days at this point.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_00: Give her a chance to get the apartment.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: Um But Ray, Ray, she gets a call that Ray's gone missing.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_00: Um and she immediately knows where Ray's gonna be, and it's at the teacups in Coney Island.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: Um and they do this very, very serious scene where they like spin together on the teacups and just stare at each other.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_02: Which you know, the director and his spinny cameras who's like.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_00: He loves it.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_02: He loves it.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_02: He's like, this is the peak of cinema.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's what maybe this whole time all the spinning in has been like references to the teacups.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_00: But he's like, oh, it's a cool is this is gonna be like uh it's gonna be like this whole movie, everyone's spinning, and then like at the end to this scene and everyone gets it.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_00: Um Ray throws up.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, she punches Molly in the chest first.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_02: Just like repeatedly punches her.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_00: She slaps her.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_00: Molly slaps her back as well, which is you're gonna slap a child, okay?
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_02: NBC's slap 2015 calls back.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_00: This was the inspiration.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_00: This move this movie is it didn't only inspire you, it inspired the slap.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_02: Twelve years later.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, so yeah.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_00: Um, but then they hug.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but they get each other.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's like it's a nice scene.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_02: It is it's a cute scene.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_00: Um, and then they're like, um there's some kind of there's some kind of like release party, I guess.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_00: Or like is it a release party?
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_02: It's something for Neil or is it is it or is it like another musician?
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_02: Did they finally sign the party?
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_02: Did they sign Nas?
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_00: No, Nas would not sign to that label.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_00: Given who else is there at that party, Nas would not sign to that label.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_02: So you know this label famous for Nas and the guy with the one-awful song.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_00: But also Mark McGrath and Dave Navarro are there who is the label for?
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_02: Who is the audience?
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_00: No, they're gonna just keep get just like be as open as they can, just get whoever they want.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: And they're just gonna get number one hit off number one hit.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_00: That's the way you do it.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_02: I I listen.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_02: So she makes up with Ingrid, she makes up.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_02: Um fine, okay.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_00: They want custom clothes from her though.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_02: No.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_02: But like horrifyingly, and I'm reading this right now.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: I've seen this movie, like I said, it's probably triple digits at this point.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_02: I'm reading the synopsis, and it says, She enroll in design school after realizing her talent for fashion.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_02: I don't remember this, and also what talent for fashion.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_00: They so Dave Dave Navarro and Mark McGrath come up to her and they're like, Oh, you did the jacket in that music video, didn't you?
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_00: Can we um can I get a pair of like trousers?
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_00: Can I get a pair of like can I can I get another can I get a jacket as well?
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_00: Obviously, not the same thing, but something similar.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_00: And she's like, fine, I'll do that.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_00: Um first of all, she's like, no, that's not what I do, and then she's like, fine, I'll do that.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_00: And then she applies to fashion school.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_00: She applies for fashion school, goes to this place, goes for the interview, and gives her like resume which says the Dalai Lama on it, and gets brought up again.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_00: And while she's in the interview, realises she's realizing she's late for the recital.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_02: You're right.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_02: She like runs out.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she leaves, so she's like, I guess she's given up on fashion school again.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_02: Um I feel like I would have I feel like if I was the uh admissions team, I'd be like, She seems like a lot.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_00: She's got no qualifications.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_00: Her only piece of fashion is this jacket.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_03: Mark McGrath.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_00: Like I wouldn't I wouldn't be taking fashion advice on Mark from Mark McGrath and Dave Navarro.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_02: You know, big names in the fashion world.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_00: Um also I read that I was gonna say I read that Common Electra's in this.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_00: At no point do I ever remember her being in this?
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_02: Oh, I don't remember that at all.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_00: I guess if she was there with Dave Navarro that's in the in the scene, but like I do not remember her in it.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: Was she the one that tried to buy uh Tiger Woods golf?
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_02: I feel like that was just like a random old woman on the street.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_00: She was she was the old woman in the flashback in the in the mirror.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_02: Ray.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_02: So she goes through Ray's recital.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_02: And like.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_00: And then Ray makes an announcement about she got a special guest with her and it's and it's Neil for some reason.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_02: Literally the only re way that Ray even knows Neil at this point is she's like, that's the dude that was banging my mom.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_02: So like That's so true.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_02: At all.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's awful.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_00: Um this guy's always around the house with his shirt off.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_02: I think he knows my nanny.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: And so they they decide that they're gonna perform that they're gonna perform um is the song called Molly Smile?
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is the song that her dad wrote.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_02: So he's again taking the song that Molly is like, I don't like it when people sing that song to me.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_02: And he's like, you know what will really win her back?
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_00: I'll sing the song and I'll bring it, I'll bring out her dad's guitars, all of them, and everyone will be using them.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_03: As props and for the little girl.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_00: And then, yeah, and then so Ray does ballet, and then she gets into like fun improvised ballet.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she gets to do like uh her little cha-cha-cha moment.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_02: She literally says cha cha cha cha.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_02: You can hear it audible, and it's brilliant.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_00: Um but that's the end of the movie.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_02: And then like, and that's the it.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_02: And then they're literally it.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_02: And it's a new I l I love that scene so much.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_02: I I'm just like a sucker for a cheesy film.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, I do love a like an ending like that.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_00: But it also feels like a half ending.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_02: Just like nothing is tied up here.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_02: Did she get into school?
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_02: Did does Molly take uh him back?
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_02: I hope no.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_02: It's just like what an awful dude.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_00: Does he give her the guitars back?
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_02: Should like that's the only way that ends and is not like awful.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_00: I bet he kept them.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_02: I bet he did too.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_00: I bet he kept them and he like had her make him more clothes or something.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_02: Seriously.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_00: He was awful, like he was an he was not a good romant romantic uh side character.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_02: Just terrible dude.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to see, has he been on anything since?
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_00: He was in I was looking him up.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_00: He's so he's been in like some TV show for years.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_02: He oh, Chicago Fire.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_02: I've never seen it, but I've got he was married to Jennifer Morrison, which is fascinating to me.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_00: I'm not entirely sure what Jennifer Morrison is.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_02: So I she was on, I'm trying to think of like she was on house for a while, and she was also in Once Upon a Time, How I Met Your Mother, just like Well, just like 8 p.m.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_00: He was also in house for eight years.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, he was he was in house for eight years.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, that must be how they met.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_02: They were only married for three years, so oh my goodness, this is the drama here.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_02: Okay, they divorced during house.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_02: So that's rough.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_00: It can't be as bad as the Dexter one.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_00: Where they were like they were brother playing brother and sister, got together in a relationship, got married, and then got divorced while the stroke was still going on as well.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_02: His last oh god, this is like the last thing he has done, though, that I can like recognize by name.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_02: Phineas and Verb.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_02: Ooh.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_02: I'm just like his movie career did not take off looking at his movies.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_00: No, he's done like four movies since the Uptown Care.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_02: He's done three shows based in Chicago.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_00: Chicago aren't those all related.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then it looks like they're the same character.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_02: Lieutenant Matthew Casey.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_00: So he's played basically he's played two characters since 2004.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_00: Hey, if it pays, then why not?
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_02: Listen, if it's working for him, who am I to judge?
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_00: I wonder if he's Australian.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, it says nationality Australian.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_00: He is Australian.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_00: I just wonder if he's Australian in in the show or if he's doing an American accent.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_02: Oh gosh.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_02: That's a really good question.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_00: Doesn't anyway, it doesn't matter.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_02: I should not care as much as I do.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about like your love for it then.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_00: Um I want to hear about your love for it and what I guess other than the fact that it's very similar to you.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_02: I just think it's like a just great, cheesy movie.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_02: And like I think my favorite thing about it is like it's not all about how she is like changing herself to fall in love with this dude.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_02: She's just doing it for her.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_02: That's true, yeah.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_02: It's just like, I don't know.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_02: And it came out in 2004 when that was like the height of all change for you and be a better person movie.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I don't know.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_02: I just feel like it's a good, feel good, cheesy romp, and I love that.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_00: Do you have any things that you don't like about it?
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, I mean, like I said, I I'm not into what's his name, Neil, at all.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_00: I don't feel like anyone's into Neil.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_02: I feel like they could have just made him not come back at the end, and like it would have like been a better thing.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_00: You know what would have been nice is like if if they found out that her mum had bought the guitars and yeah, if Ray's mom had done something like that, exactly.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_00: To preserve them in like some kind of museum or something like that.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_02: And just like gave uh rat's ass about her daughter for two minutes.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_00: That's that's that plot is not tied up.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: Like she goes and helps her with the with the ballet dress, but that's like the two, and that's it, that's it.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_00: But like that's not a lot of effort, is it?
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, like I guess, yeah, it's a it's a fun movie.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_00: It's kind of yeah.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, I feel like if the movie hadn't taken itself so seriously, or if it had leaned in and taken itself more seriously, like picked a direction, it would have been like A plus in my book.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_02: So what is it now?
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_00: Is it just A?
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just an A.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_00: Just an A.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_02: 95%.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_00: And then sleeping with other people is a hundred percent.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, two thousand percent.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't I don't I like that movie as well, so yeah, it's a good movie.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_02: I have never showed it to somebody and they've been like, meh.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_02: I could do with it or without it.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_02: Everybody's like, that's a great movie.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_00: Has anyone hated it that you've shown it to?
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_02: No, nobody.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_02: And everybody's like, why haven't I heard of this movie before?
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_02: The cast in this movie is incredible.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_02: It's just Jason Manzukis, Andrea Savage, um, Jason Sudakis, Alison Bree.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_02: I yeah, I'm here to plug.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_02: I'm here to plug sleeping with other people.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_00: Like well, this leads me into the final question then.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_00: Um so to reverse in the reverse of that, yeah.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_00: What's a movie that you can uh consider uh bad that everyone loves and is considered a good movie?
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_02: Thank you for asking.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_02: My answer to that question is a star is born.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_02: Awful film.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_00: The most recent version, I'm assuming.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm sure I wouldn't like the other two versions either, but like there's three other versions.
- 1:14:39SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, see, it's just nobody needs to be able to do that.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_02: It's too much.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_02: It's too much.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_02: It's a bad relationship.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_02: I everybody's like for it.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_02: It's an awful abusive relationship, and it should not be celebrated.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_00: What so what else do you hate about it then?
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_00: Is it just the relationship?
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_00: Do you like the music?
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_02: The music is fine.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's not great.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_02: I I feel nothing towards it.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_02: Uh, my favorite song on um the A Star is born soundtrack is like the 14-second clip of um God, who is it?
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_02: My name is Blanking, but there's somebody on like the track who's just like at SNL and they're like, ladies and gentlemen, Allie.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's Alec Baldwin.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_02: Yes, it's Alec Baldwin.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_02: Ladies and gentlemen, Allie.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_02: I could listen to that like five times, but the other song is it's just it's mediocre to me.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_02: And I remember at the time, like especially when it just came out, I was forced to see it on theaters like three times.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_02: And I was every time it was just like, yeah, I was just like, this is a bad movie.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_02: Everybody on Twitter was just like, this is the greatest movie I've ever seen in my life.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_02: And I'm just like, I I feel alone.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_00: I saw it, I was like, yeah, it's fun.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_00: It's decent, decent movie.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't think I wouldn't say it's like amazing.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_02: It's got a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's too high.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_02: That's way too high.
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_00: I'd give it like a 70.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_02: I'd give it a 62.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_00: That's that's high for you.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_00: That's high for someone who's coming from.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_02: I thought you were still high.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_00: That's still a positive rating.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, like, emotionally, I feel like their romance, I'd give a 2%.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_02: Like, it's not a good romance film.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, they're romance awful.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_00: It's bad.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_02: It's so bad.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_00: But that's the that's the consistent thing throughout the movies, like each one of them as well.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_00: That's the consistent thing.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_02: But I feel like nobody talks about that.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_02: They just like it's just a part of the movie that everybody blazes off.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_00: I I think because people love the music, and that's true.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_00: I think he's good in it.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_00: I don't think I don't think she's that good in it.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_02: And Lady Gaga?
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_02: I feel the opposite.
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_00: You like her, but you don't like him in it.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_02: I feel like I mean, Lady Gaga is a perfectly fine actress.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_02: Um, Bradley Cooper's he's good.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_02: Um I I like I this is like a controversial opinion, I guess, but I loved Silverlining's playbook.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_02: And I'm just like, I feel like he was much better in that movie than he was in.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_00: I would agree with that.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_00: I'd agree with that.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_02: I I really like Silver Lining's playbook as well, and I know people I have a Silver Lining's playbook tattoo, and I know that like other people are just like, yeah, I have a white-kattoo that says Excelsior, like right down my arm, and it's big, it's my favorite tattoo.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_02: And I I like every now and then somebody's like, is it because you're um a Stan Lee fan?
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_02: Because that was his catching.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_00: That's what I would go to, yeah.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_02: I'm like, sure.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_00: That's where my mind would go with Excelsior.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_02: Like, actually, it's because I have an obsession with the 2013 Oscar nominated film Silver Lying Playbook, if you want to hear about it, um, which no one ever does.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_00: It's I would say that is definitely a better movie than uh than uh Star is Born.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can't even remember the name of the movie.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_00: Um cool.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, do you have any final thoughts?
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_00: Anything you want to like anything you've missed out that you want to speak about?
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_02: With Uptown Girls?
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_02: No.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_02: I I feel like we've covered it all, but I would once again like to plug sleeping with other people 2015.
