- 0:00Our number 2 on a Monday. Merry Christmas to everybody out
- 0:04there as we have an abridged version of things this week will
- 0:08be off after tomorrow, but still so much content to get into.
- 0:12So much to talk about in our next guest.
- 0:15He joins Us Weekly during college football season.
- 0:17Mondays to recap, Fridays to preview.
- 0:21But sadly, Bama, Bob, we are dwindling down.
- 0:23The games are tightening up. We still got bowl games.
- 0:26We still got a playoff bracket that is down 28 but just kicked
- 0:30off Wazoo and Utah State on the Smurf turf out in Boise.
- 0:34We got bowl games going on. Got to love it.
- 0:37I mean, it seems like I'm trying to look, it's like almost one
- 0:41every day. Is that right?
- 0:42Maybe for for the foreseeable future, which is never a bad
- 0:46thing. Of course, you got Christmas
- 0:48with the NFL. But yeah, Saturday's a really
- 0:51good schedule. Big slate.
- 0:52Absolutely. Before that, though, let's take
- 0:54a look back and gander back at what we saw.
- 0:56And Bama, we were going back 4th, you were giving me crap
- 1:00about picking Alabama at 17. Nothing.
- 1:03You're all pissed off. And then talk about momentum.
- 1:08It completely changed late in that first half and then the
- 1:11onslaught was on. Just take us through as an
- 1:14Alabama fan, as you are. And you know, we don't get into
- 1:17your fandom a ton here, but you are a Bama fan, You live down
- 1:20there. Obviously you are very close to
- 1:23watching the program. Everything going on down 17,
- 1:26nothing. And the questions.
- 1:28Caitlin de Boer or is he going to be getting his meal in Arbor?
- 1:30What is happening there? What a crazy, crazy football
- 1:33game. It was First of all, you are not
- 1:36feeling confident about that. Oklahoma, Alabama by double
- 1:39digits when it was 17 to nothing.
- 1:41I ain't buying that. Yeah, it was, you know, my kind
- 1:45of thought I had when it was 17. Nothing was.
- 1:50This looks just like Florida State beginning of the year, you
- 1:54know, silly penalties, bad gaps, poor tackling, just just all
- 2:02those things, right. And and, you know, just kind of
- 2:04an onslaught at that point. I've got to give Caitlin de Boer
- 2:09and his staff credit. And I will fully acknowledge
- 2:12that I would say 6. I'll give Alabama 60% of the
- 2:17credit. But a lot of the blame for this
- 2:18goes to Oklahoma because not only maybe for some for some
- 2:22decisions, but just some poor execution.
- 2:26I think the biggest play, the biggest play of the game was to
- 2:30pick 6 because that tied it right.
- 2:33And and those are just one of those plays where when you're
- 2:35down a touchdown, all of a sudden 10 seconds later you're
- 2:37tied. OK, You don't have to drive the
- 2:39link to the field. You don't have to worry about
- 2:41penalties or anything like that. That's just bang, all of a
- 2:43sudden you've got 7 points on the board.
- 2:45Those sudden plays are really hard to overcome.
- 2:48But to me, the key play in that game was Matir on that scramble,
- 2:53not running for the first down. And I understand he had a wide
- 2:57open receiver and he hit him in the hand and the guy dropped.
- 3:03If he makes that catch, it's probably going to be it's going
- 3:07to be at least 20 to 7, probably 24 to 7.
- 3:11And we were talking about a wholly, completely new set of
- 3:14topics today, not only about Oklahoma moving on, but divorce,
- 3:18future, everything else, right? But instead, they come back.
- 3:21I still don't know what happened to the kid on the punt.
- 3:23I mean, that was a good snap. He caught it.
- 3:26I mean, got to check his DraftKings account, maybe I
- 3:28don't know if there's something going on there, but he just flat
- 3:31out dropped the ball on the ground.
- 3:33Maybe he saw Tim Keenan, all £350 coming at him and made a
- 3:37business decision. I'm not sure.
- 3:39But it it that that one play, that one decision by mature to
- 3:44me was, was the difference in the game?
- 3:46Was was the turning point, not the difference, but certainly
- 3:48the turning point. And from there, you know,
- 3:51Alabama found a a little bit of a running game.
- 3:54They made adjustments. I thought their protection of Ty
- 3:57Simpson was excellent in the second-half.
- 4:00Really about midway through the second quarter on, I thought it
- 4:02was excellent. They got after Mateer on
- 4:06defense, made him uncomfortable. You know, if you make him beat
- 4:12you throwing, you've got a really good chance because he's
- 4:14going to put the ball in harm's way.
- 4:16And he did. He made some good throws.
- 4:19You got to give him that. But I just, it was almost a
- 4:23mirror image of what happened in the first game in Tuscaloosa
- 4:27about 5 weeks ago and that Alabama dominated the stats, but
- 4:31the turnovers is what cost them the game.
- 4:33Well, this time it was completely the other way around.
- 4:36You look at the yardage and you know, everybody's having their
- 4:39fun on Twitter and you know, the Notre Dame people coming out of
- 4:41the woodwork and all this kind of stuff.
- 4:44But I give the bore and his staff and I give the team a lot
- 4:47of credit, the players, because it was, I mean, it would have
- 4:50been really easy to fold up the tent and go home at that point,
- 4:52you know, just finish out the next half and off you go.
- 4:55But they they tied it at half time and then, you know, just
- 4:59pulled away, you know, comfortably, you know, at the
- 5:02end. So I give I give that staff a
- 5:04lot of credit. They kept fighting and now
- 5:06they've got a much tougher, much tougher test because they've got
- 5:10a legit, you know, top two, top three, maybe number one overall
- 5:16pick a quarterback and Indiana is low.
- 5:18I'm sure. I know we're going to get into
- 5:19this game as we go along, but you know, in future segments.
- 5:23But Indiana's legit. They can, they're physical,
- 5:27they're big. I said at the time to me, the
- 5:30number one take away of them winning the Big 10 championship
- 5:33was the way they did it. They didn't have to outscore
- 5:35Ohio State. They out they out punched Ohio
- 5:38State, which I didn't think was possible for them.
- 5:40So Alabama has got a big, big test coming up in the Rose Bowl,
- 5:44but they passed this one. I don't know where Michigan's
- 5:47going to go from here. Sounds like Dillingham staying
- 5:49Arizona State, but you know, I don't think they can wait until
- 5:54after New Year's if if they're still waiting on the board.
- 5:56I don't think that that's really happening anyway.
- 5:59It might be, but I will be surprised if it is.
- 6:02But I don't know how they can continue to wait for Alabama
- 6:05season to end because it may not end on January 1st and they just
- 6:08may keep going. But good win for them.
- 6:10Everybody is excited down here more for the comeback.
- 6:13Didn't like the way they started, but really like the way
- 6:16that they finished obviously. Bama, if the team that we saw
- 6:20throughout the course of the game shows up against Indiana, I
- 6:22think they get throttled. I think the Hoosiers, I agree.
- 6:24Just absolutely. Yeah, they ran the ball a little
- 6:27bit, but not enough. I mean, they're just not enough.
- 6:29How how they can't run the ball. It is one of the more
- 6:32confounding things. I know Oklahoma's defense is
- 6:34really good, but again, Jim Miller looked like he shouldn't
- 6:37even been playing. The other running back was OK,
- 6:40but it just it was OK. If that team shows up against
- 6:43Indiana and we know what Signetti's team does and we know
- 6:45how good they are up front on both sides of the ball, I think
- 6:49it's crazy. If you take away the helmets, if
- 6:51you take away the history, you take everything away from what
- 6:54I've seen from this Alabama team for the last six weeks and what
- 6:56we've seen from Indiana all year long.
- 6:58I think it's a clubbing. But I know the uniforms are
- 7:01probably going to get my way by the time we get.
- 7:03But we got plenty of time to do before that.
- 7:04Then we get things started Saturday morning and it is.
- 7:09Lovely. Not fun football 10 three the
- 7:12final we get one touchdown in the game.
- 7:14It was entertaining in the aspect that at least it was
- 7:16close, but miss kicks, I mean not even close on some of the
- 7:20kicks. Just one thing after another.
- 7:22In the end, Carson Beck who didn't make many plays, he made
- 7:26one play flipping it out there and get it to Tony that kids a
- 7:28stud, but that was about it. Not a very enjoyable experience
- 7:32as a fan. No, it wasn't.
- 7:34I thought that game had a chance to be pretty good because, you
- 7:38know, these teams aren't familiar with each other.
- 7:39I mean, right, Alabama and Oklahoma had played.
- 7:42There were some familiarity there.
- 7:43A lot of times we saw it again, you know, Indiana, Ohio State,
- 7:46familiarity in the Big 10 championship game, Alabama,
- 7:50Georgia, you know, those those games tend to be, you know, tend
- 7:55to be a little uglier. This one was just, I mean, it
- 7:57was a hard watch in the first half.
- 8:00I mean, scoreless, right? I thought Fletcher was the was
- 8:05the key to the game. The Miami running back, I mean,
- 8:07172 yards on the ground and that last drive, he really took over.
- 8:12And you mentioned Malachi. It was not outside Tony.
- 8:15I mean, it, it was from the fumble, right?
- 8:19To come back and make that play and you know, I guess it's a
- 8:22passing touchdown. Can we please stop giving Carson
- 8:25Beck a touchdown pass on that? I know we flipped it forward,
- 8:27but come on. If it's behind the line of
- 8:30scrimmage anyway, it's a different story for another day.
- 8:32But it was ugly. I don't think either one of
- 8:35these teams has a shot or would have had a shot from what I saw
- 8:40in the next round against Ohio State.
- 8:42I just I mean, I can't I don't if Miami play you tell my
- 8:45getting throttled. If Miami plays like that, they
- 8:49are going to get absolutely throttled.
- 8:51But that was AI think that was a tough loss for Anli.
- 8:55Think they're ahead of schedule, right.
- 8:57If you want to look at big picture, Mike Elko year 2 has
- 9:00them way ahead of schedule. He had them undefeated.
- 9:03What 11 know going into the rivalry game against Texas.
- 9:06We talked about their schedule all year.
- 9:09They played the the literal bottom half of the SEC.
- 9:13If you go look at the standings now they finished.
- 9:16That's who A&M played save for that last game.
- 9:18So I think they were a little bit overrated.
- 9:20I think Marcel Reed got exposed a little bit.
- 9:23We talked about that I believe Friday, You know, make him beat
- 9:26you if you can contain him. And they did pretty well.
- 9:30Now he he made some, he piled up some yards, but it was the
- 9:34picks, right? I mean the the turnovers, the
- 9:36mistakes. You can't do that in a in a good
- 9:40team. This is, you can argue if this
- 9:42is the best team they played all year, second best team maybe you
- 9:47know, with Notre Dame or Texas or whoever you want to, But this
- 9:50wasn't you. You weren't just running through
- 9:52Mississippi State and Arkansas in this game.
- 9:56So it was it was ugly. Watch, I don't think Miami, I
- 10:01can't give them much of a chance from what I saw against Ohio
- 10:05State, but I still think Ohio State's the best team in the
- 10:08country, even though, you know, Indiana's got the scoreboard on
- 10:11them. I think top to bottom talent
- 10:13wise, nobody can line up with them across the board.
- 10:16Maybe Georgia about it. But that said, you know, Miami,
- 10:21it's it's kind of like a, you know, buddy of mine was texting
- 10:23the Alabama game like, man, this is ugly.
- 10:24They're not going to go anywhere.
- 10:25You know, they have a chance chance against Indiana.
- 10:28And he said you listen, this is a tournament, man.
- 10:29It's like the NCAA. You just whatever you got to do
- 10:32to win that game is what you got to do.
- 10:33You don't have to worry about, you know, quality win or
- 10:36anything, you know, FPI or this other crap when you're doing
- 10:39during the regular season, whatever.
- 10:41You don't have to worry about what anybody else is doing other
- 10:43than team across me. Whatever you have to do to win
- 10:46that game, that's what you do. It is surviving advance and
- 10:49Miami did. I'm sure they'll go back to the
- 10:51drawing board. I think the the encouraging part
- 10:54for them is they were able to run.
- 10:55I don't know if they're going to be able to do that against Ohio
- 10:59State, but again, we get into a little danger area when we start
- 11:03trying to say, well, maybe you that game's not going to beat my
- 11:06Ohio State. Well, that game's not.
- 11:09But they got two weeks to get ready for that game.
- 11:11And it doesn't matter how pretty it was as long as you get the
- 11:13win and they got the win. And disappointing for Anmi.
- 11:16Know that big crowd, you know, kind of went home disappointed.
- 11:22But again, I think that program, they got a tougher schedule next
- 11:25year already with the head and they got a they do have a
- 11:27tougher schedule. I don't expect them to be 11 and
- 11:29O going into the Texas game next year, but he's got them.
- 11:33It's a good season for them ahead of schedule and they build
- 11:36on it. I think that's going to be
- 11:37tougher than than what some people think.
- 11:40And you mentioned the running game there, Mark Fletcher, what
- 11:42a story, the picture of him and and big Mark, his dad that just
- 11:46passed away a year ago that was. Yeah, I mean, that did me
- 11:51anyway. Yes, I was right there with you
- 11:53just seeing the picture and you know, them talking about just
- 11:56how much he meant to Miami and EU and getting to play at home
- 12:00for Fletcher, how big that was for him.
- 12:02That was a good part certainly of the weekend.
- 12:04Ole Miss, Tulane, another blowout.
- 12:07But I guess the biggest story that comes out of this is the
- 12:11injury to Lacy, right? The running back for a little
- 12:12bits. Yeah, that's tough because
- 12:15again, now they got to go play Georgia, right?
- 12:17Familiarity. Those two teams know each other.
- 12:19They've already played once this year.
- 12:21This is another one. I don't know, you know, I'm not
- 12:24this. It's in New Orleans.
- 12:26I don't think there's going to be an advantage for either team.
- 12:29I think that's going to be pretty much a 5050 split.
- 12:31But I think this is a real uphill climb for Ole Miss
- 12:34without Lacey. I don't I have not seen if if
- 12:38that is if he's out for this game officially.
- 12:41I know shambles got hurt also that's a concussion it looked
- 12:44like, but he came back. So you would hope that he'll be
- 12:47fine. But you know, you're getting
- 12:49into now. You know, again, I I think
- 12:51Georgia has the best coaching staff in the country was smart
- 12:54and his assistants, they they're just experienced.
- 12:57They've been through everything. This is going to be a this is a
- 13:01heavy lift for Ole Miss to go in there without Lane Kiffin and
- 13:06try to match wits with Georgia and Kirby and Mike Bobo.
- 13:12And in that I think they'll hang for a little while.
- 13:15We can get into that. You know that will, you know,
- 13:19dissect that game later, but you know, this one was they just
- 13:21kind of needed. They did what they needed to do.
- 13:24You hope the injuries aren't serious.
- 13:27If they are, if Lacey's out, you know, for the Georgia game that
- 13:30is. I mean that's that's a big, big
- 13:32loss for them. You know, shambles, probably the
- 13:35second most important offensive player on that team because that
- 13:38kids explosive. They line up.
- 13:40They lined him up so many ways, you know, straight runs.
- 13:43They give it to him in the passing game.
- 13:45They're running on sweeps. They do a lot of different
- 13:47things with him. If he's out, that's big weapon
- 13:49for them and you hate to see that.
- 13:52I was I was happy to see Ole Miss the fans show up, right?
- 13:55They weren't it wasn't any of this all you know, gosh, Lane
- 13:58Kiffin's gone. What are we going to do now?
- 14:00And you listen, it wasn't the probably wasn't the opponent you
- 14:03would hope to have in a playoff. And you know, maybe it is for
- 14:06some fans, you know, because it's like, you know, you kind of
- 14:09knew you were going to be able to do something like this or you
- 14:12should be able to do something like this.
- 14:15You know, maybe you'd want to, you know, somebody with a little
- 14:18bigger, better logo on the helmet, if you will, But good
- 14:21for them. Good for those kids to I don't
- 14:25know if you call it revenge or whatever, but basically show
- 14:27Lane Kiff and listen, it's not all about you.
- 14:29We're we're capable of getting here and winning a playoff game
- 14:33and but can they beat Georgia? Anything can happen again, A
- 14:36surviving advance doesn't matter.
- 14:38You lose, your season's over. I think it's a really tough ask
- 14:41for them to go into to New Orleans and and win, But they've
- 14:45got a certainly going to be no surprises in this game.
- 14:50These two teams know each other from having played obviously
- 14:52earlier in the year. But that was turns out.
- 14:56I don't know if that was the least competitive of the four
- 14:59that we had. I mean, it was it was the the
- 15:01margin was wider than the one in Eugene.
- 15:04So but I don't know if that makes it, you know, any better
- 15:07game or not, but good for Ole Miss happy for their players not
- 15:10not to just go, you know, down the tubes kind of with with Lane
- 15:13Kiffin and you know, him tweeting during the game.
- 15:16Just shut up, lane. I mean, just stop.
- 15:18You know, you left, OK, It was your choice to leave.
- 15:21Don't nobody wants to hear your congratulations to your players
- 15:25and how proud you are of them. You know what, if you were that
- 15:27proud of them, you would have stayed and you didn't.
- 15:30So just stop. Just I'm kind of, I mean, the
- 15:33drama with this guy just did never ends.
- 15:37Always about lane, we've definitely.
- 15:38Always about Lane Exactly, yeah. Final game, Oregon, James
- 15:42Madison backdoor cover out of the Dukes, they moved the ball,
- 15:45you know the 1st Dr. March down, get a field goal, March down the
- 15:48second drive, have a field goal blocked and then oh boy, couple
- 15:51plays later it's all of a sudden 2120 to 3:00 and then the
- 15:54onslaught was on for that one. Do you make anything at all out
- 15:58of the Dukes coming back late in that game or is it just it was
- 16:00window dressing? Oregon did what they needed to
- 16:02dominated, then put in cruise control for the final, basically
- 16:05half of the football game. Dan Lanning wasn't happy.
- 16:08You could tell, you know, his immediate reaction after the
- 16:14game, you know, with the on field interview, his press
- 16:16conference, you know, I saw some clips there.
- 16:18I saw some clips on Sports Center or wherever it was.
- 16:22He was not happy with the performance overall.
- 16:25I don't know what you can make of it.
- 16:27I think it's it's a little bit, I don't want to say alarming
- 16:32maybe, but it might because for concern, right?
- 16:35I mean, Texas Tech is going to be a much tougher opponents and
- 16:38they got to fly all the way across the country to play this
- 16:42game, which I again, we talked about before.
- 16:44Just ridiculous what they're having to do, you know, to go to
- 16:47Miami to play a quarterfinal game again, both these teams,
- 16:50right? Lubbock to Miami is no, there's
- 16:54no just, you know, our plane ride either.
- 16:56It's just crazy what the schedule is, but you know,
- 16:58they're going to go play it. I think it's concerning.
- 17:03I think they need to tighten it up.
- 17:04Maybe they were maybe there was a little bit of a let down again
- 17:06as to who the opponent was. I mean, I can't imagine they
- 17:09knew much about them other than what they saw from film.
- 17:13It was not it wasn't close. You know, again, backdoor cover.
- 17:16Thanks, Madison. I think, Oh, you give, I think
- 17:19we can all agree they didn't belong in this tournament.
- 17:22And I've seen that all over, you know, social media and it's
- 17:27true. And I'm also seeing some people,
- 17:30a lot of people post, you can't blame them for being there.
- 17:32You blame the committee for putting them there.
- 17:33And that's 100% accurate. They enjoyed their time, right?
- 17:38They enjoyed the experience. They go all the way across
- 17:40country. They don't care.
- 17:41They don't care if you want them there, if they don't care, if
- 17:43you like them there, you know, they're going to go in and
- 17:45they're going to, they're going to enjoy the experience.
- 17:47And they played to the end. As you know, Scott Van Pelt
- 17:49says, we signed up for 60, we play 60.
- 17:52You know, they don't care about your back door cover.
- 17:54They don't care about any of this stuff, right?
- 17:56So they enjoyed it. I think they're obviously A1 and
- 17:59done. More than likely they could
- 18:00sneak in as a group of five next year.
- 18:02We'll see. I don't know how I don't know if
- 18:05this builds their program or if this is just a flash in the pan
- 18:08and they go back to being kind of irrelevant in the Sunbelt.
- 18:10But good for them. You know, they had their moment
- 18:13in the sun and they enjoyed it. I don't know how many people
- 18:16watched it. This was up against the NFL and
- 18:19you know, it was a blowout, but good for them.
- 18:22But if I if I'm Oregon, there's some things, this may be one of
- 18:25those wins that Dan Landing looks at and goes, you know,
- 18:27listen, guys, you know, there's no celebrating this and we're
- 18:30not even going to have the 24 hour rule here.
- 18:32You know, there's a lot of things we did that wasn't up to
- 18:34our standard. That's kind of how he put it.
- 18:37And I think he knows that if they play that way, they got no
- 18:39shot, Sir. I don't really have a they're
- 18:42going to lose to Texas Tech more than likely if they play like
- 18:44that. But certainly the better teams
- 18:47that they've got their eyes set on.
- 18:49I thought going in they were one of five teams that I thought
- 18:52them and Texas Tech were two that maybe had a backdoor shot,
- 18:56long shot or whatever at winning it all along.
- 19:00You know, with Ohio State, Indiana, Georgia being the big
- 19:03favorites, you know any, you know, the betting favorites, if
- 19:05you will, but they play like that.
- 19:07They're coming home after that Miami game or the game in Miami.
- 19:11So they've got more skill. They should have.
- 19:15They should have done better, I guess.
- 19:17And I think he's probably upset that they didn't finish it and
- 19:19they didn't finish the game the way they wanted to.
- 19:22Out of some of that credit goes to James Madison.
- 19:24Some of it probably goes to, again, let's just get out of
- 19:26here. Let's don't get anybody hurt.
- 19:28We don't care what the final margin is.
- 19:30Let's just take our ball and go home.
- 19:32With that Bama, we got a lot of games in front of us.
- 19:35Mentioned the Potato Bowl underway.
- 19:36Still no score with wazoo. Know a lot of Cyclone fans keep
- 19:39an eye on that one. Some potential assistant coaches
- 19:42might be coming with Coach Rogers in that one.
- 19:44We got 3 bowl games tomorrow, one on Christmas Eve, of course
- 19:48the Hawaii Bowl with Kalin, Hawaii 3 on Friday and how about
- 19:51this eight bowl games on Saturday the 27th including the
- 19:55Pinstripe Bowl, Penn State, Clemson, We get Georgia Tech,
- 19:58BYU team with a little bit of angst themselves in the Cougars.
- 20:02So. Pretty good week and you got a
- 20:04favorite. What's the one that you got
- 20:05circled as we make our way towards the weekend?
- 20:08You know, it's funny because some of these games and it's,
- 20:10again, it's so hard to tell, you know, who's in, who's out, who's
- 20:14happy to be there, who doesn't want to be there, that kind of
- 20:16thing. I kind of go with venue here.
- 20:18So I, you know, I like the game at Fenway Park.
- 20:21I think it's weird. It's goofy, you know, they're
- 20:24both on one side of the field, you know, and that's Army.
- 20:27I'll, you know, I generally watch Army if I can Army, UConn,
- 20:30I think it's a good game. Northeast.
- 20:31I think that's an excellent match up at Fenway Park, right?
- 20:35You had Army and UConn 2 NE schools in Fenway Park, you
- 20:38know, the game and, and, and Yankee Stadium, you know, that's
- 20:41fine. That's that's kind of fun too.
- 20:45You know, if you just look at it match up wise going in, I like
- 20:48the Georgia Tech BYU game, but again, don't know who's there.
- 20:51You know, where's BYU head? I guess since they decided to
- 20:54play, you know, they're going to all show up and like another
- 20:57team. By the way, you see BYU and
- 20:59Notre Dame signed A2 games to play next year and the year
- 21:03after. So I'm sure that's just
- 21:05coincidence. But yeah, I you know, it's I'm
- 21:09going to go more venue more than actual match up because it's so
- 21:12hard to tell, you know, Penn State, Clemson on paper is, you
- 21:16know, a really nice one. But again, who knows how that's
- 21:19going to turn out. But Virginia, Missouri looks
- 21:22good. But I just go with venue on
- 21:24those. So I'll be sitting down Saturday
- 21:26morning early and watching the two playing in to the iconic
- 21:30baseball stadiums that we have in this country.
- 21:33We'll talk to you in a week's time.
- 21:34Bama, have a great Christmas. We'll talk to you next Monday to
- 21:37recap and get ready for the playoff.
- 21:39I look forward to the guys and you know, all the best I can and
- 21:43you guys have a Merry Christmas, Happy holidays.
- 21:45Please stay safe and be thankful.
- 21:46Thank. You.
- 21:47Yep. Thanks, Bama.
- 21:48Bama, Bob checking in, as he does twice weekly during college
- 21:51football season. A look back at what we saw in
- 21:53the playoff and get ready for those quarterfinals.
- 21:56Boy, how good is this going to be?
- 21:57Starting on that Friday night, we're going to get New Year's
- 21:59Eve, Miami against Ohio State, a rematch of the 2002 season, a
- 22:04national championship game, and the Chris Gamble play in the end
- 22:08zone. Then on that Saturday, January
- 22:101st, the triple header starts with Oregon, Texas Tech, for my
- 22:13money, the best of the games, that's in Miami.
- 22:16Then Game 2, the Rose Bowl, Indiana, Alabama and Georgia,
- 22:19Ole Miss to cap things off down in the Sugar Bowl.
- 22:22What a stretch we're going to have coming up in college
- 22:25football. We continue on the other side.
- 22:27Time to tell some Hawkeyes. David Eicholdt's going to join
- 22:29us from hawkeyeinsider.com, It's Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 22:32Sports Radio Network. We continue, it's Miller and
- 22:34Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:37Ken, back with us tomorrow, today just myself, Trent, joined
- 22:41by David Eichold. Now as we talk a little,
- 22:44Hawkeyes getting ready for the bowl game and opt out, though
- 22:47not from the Iowa perspective. It will be on the Vandy side of
- 22:52things, the Star Wars, their outstanding tight end.
- 22:53He is not going to be there. We know Diego Pavi will be in a
- 22:56guy that likes to party. Wonder if he's going to run into
- 22:58Diego, he is David Eichold. What's up, David?
- 23:02What's going on, man? Yeah, we'll we'll see.
- 23:03I'll tell you what, the weather is going to be nice.
- 23:05I I finally checked it out. It looks like it's going to be
- 23:07about 80 and sunny, I think the entire week.
- 23:09So there's a reason I booked a one way dig it.
- 23:12We'll we'll see when I feel like coming back.
- 23:13I might hang out for a little bit.
- 23:15Spend a little bit more time in Florida.
- 23:17Not a bad thing. As we know, though, the weather
- 23:19decent here across the state today.
- 23:21We know how the weather could turn, certainly.
- 23:23So you're making your way down there to the bowl game.
- 23:26It is Vanderbilt. Let's just talk about the game,
- 23:28mentioned Stowers. He's not going to be there.
- 23:31I've been back and forth very conflicted on this one.
- 23:34You know, we, we got to come up with an opinion and a take and I
- 23:37just don't have a good feeling one way or the other for this
- 23:40match up against Vandy. There's times the way they run
- 23:43the ball and what Oregon did against Iowa and kind of get
- 23:46concerned and then it comes the other way.
- 23:47Where are you right now? I don't.
- 23:48We're still almost two weeks away from the game actually
- 23:51happening. Where are you when we just look
- 23:53at the match up, not knowing who's all going to be there on
- 23:56both sides when you look at the match up against Vanderbilt?
- 23:59Yeah, I mean, I think the line is about right news.
- 24:01Unfortunate the Stowers Mackie Award winner did opt out.
- 24:04And I'll tell you, that's a different tune than what we kind
- 24:07of heard over the last couple weeks.
- 24:08Because when Clark Leah met with the media, he said he was not
- 24:11anticipating any opt outs. And that was a big reason I
- 24:13think a lot of eyes were going to be on this bowl game.
- 24:16I know we it's become cool to devalue bowl games.
- 24:19I understand it to a certain extent, Trent, but this to me is
- 24:22a top five bowl game like outside the College Football
- 24:24Playoff. I think this is going to be a
- 24:26really fun matchup. Vanderbilt's been extremely
- 24:29physical. They really haven't played a lot
- 24:31of great rushing offenses. So I'm very intrigued about how
- 24:34Iowa's mid zone game kind of attacks them, how Mark Granowski
- 24:37is going to be utilized. But you know, Diego Pavea was
- 24:41one of the most dynamic players in all of college football and
- 24:44you know, what better test for him to be able to go against
- 24:46than a Phil Parker coach defense.
- 24:48So I do think Vanderbilt should be ranked.
- 24:52I mean, just a little bit higher in the odds should be in their
- 24:54favor that they're a really solid football team.
- 24:57And it really is incredible job that Clark Lee has done with
- 25:00them because I mean, Vanderbilt, it was what trended bottom three
- 25:04power 5 football program all time, maybe maybe arguably the
- 25:07worst. I mean, they really haven't had
- 25:09a lot of sustained success. I mean, you could argue this is
- 25:11their most successful season they've ever had.
- 25:14And I think that's why they're going to be motivated to kind of
- 25:16continue that and to beat what I think is a really good Iowa
- 25:19team. But from a matchup perspective,
- 25:22I like to see some new wrinkles. I like for Iowa to try to attack
- 25:25them through the air. I'm not going to be surprised if
- 25:27they end up doing that. But you know, there are some
- 25:30things about this Vanderbilt team that they play good
- 25:32defense, man, and they like to push the pace and and Diego
- 25:35Pavea is the reason behind that. So we go from the match up to
- 25:40the Iowa perspective. They have said all the right
- 25:43things, Kirk said. Doesn't anticipate any opt outs.
- 25:46But it's different when you get there.
- 25:47Guys certainly look at their NFL futures outside the guys.
- 25:50We think maybe we'll depart for the portal.
- 25:52That'll be happening just two days later.
- 25:54When that opens up on January 2nd, will you be surprised?
- 25:57Let's just put it that way. Will you be surprised if we find
- 26:00out a guy or two, you know, a day before the game that you
- 26:03know what, not going to play in this game.
- 26:05Will you be surprised by that? I would a little bit and and I'm
- 26:09trying to say this with the utmost respect to the players
- 26:12that I cover and and everything like that, But Trent, how many
- 26:15players from I were good enough to opt out?
- 26:20Like I don't want to come across like that.
- 26:21But I mean, you know, I think Logan Jones has already said
- 26:24he's not going to opt out. You think that Joe Moore
- 26:26award-winning offensive line. They basically said on their
- 26:29live stream today that they they aren't going to opt out.
- 26:31They kind of laughed, laughed it off when they were asked about
- 26:34that. So Logan Jones is not going to
- 26:35Jennings dunker is not going to, you know, both Stevens is not
- 26:39Mark Gronowski has no reason to opt out.
- 26:42And and you know, obviously he said all along that he's going
- 26:44to play. And then you look at some of the
- 26:46members of the secondary like TJ Halls upped his draft stock
- 26:49significantly. But after the way his season
- 26:51ended with that kind of nagging shoulder injury, he wants to
- 26:54play one last time with this team.
- 26:56I I think Xavier Wampa, you know, had he been able first or
- 27:00second round draft, he could have potentially done that.
- 27:02But I think his leadership in his production has been very
- 27:04critical for Iowa's back end. So it won't long answer a little
- 27:08bit Trent, but I would be a little bit surprised.
- 27:11But then again, it's kind of hard to surprise me from this
- 27:13extent. We see and hear so much stuff
- 27:16that goes on in college athletics on a daily basis.
- 27:19At this point, there's very few jaw-dropping things where I'm
- 27:22just sitting there mind blown, because when you really think
- 27:25about the grand totality of things, everything's almost on
- 27:28the table at this point. It really is.
- 27:31Nothing should surprise us. Well, wasn't a surprise at all
- 27:34in the recruiting world, Jax De Jean makes his commitment to
- 27:38Iowa. Long felt like this was going to
- 27:40be the case. But I know after Levar Woods,
- 27:42his departure was announced, there was a little bit of
- 27:44tepidation out there. Levar obviously recruits western
- 27:48Iowa, northwest Iowa specifically.
- 27:50So maybe some concerns there. No concerns now.
- 27:52He makes his commitment to Iowa. The younger brother of Cooper
- 27:55Jacks is going there, but a different kind of player
- 27:58certainly than older brother Cooper.
- 28:01Oh, yeah, absolutely. I mean, I think right now you
- 28:04can throw him in a wide variety of different positions.
- 28:06He is listed as a tight end. The offer is at tight end about
- 28:116/4 and 1/2, about 2:15. And you look at that tight ender
- 28:14man, I think Abdul Hodge has to be smiling ear to ear with some
- 28:17of the talent that he's got there.
- 28:18Because as we mentioned earlier, DJ Venami in that group and his
- 28:23emergence over the course of the year combined, Luke Brewer, the
- 28:25Norwalk IA, I have Jax, Digene, Thomas Meyer.
- 28:29I mean, you just go up and down the list.
- 28:31Like there's a ton of potential in that group.
- 28:34But yeah, Jax is a really good athlete.
- 28:36Again, he's a very productive basketball player as well.
- 28:38I think he's averaging about 14 and 10 already this early
- 28:42season. I do think he's become a little
- 28:44bit more physical at the point of attack on blocking.
- 28:46But as far as hands go, as far as, you know, making the right
- 28:50football plays, understanding football to a high level, I
- 28:53think he's got a bunch of upside there.
- 28:55I think there, I don't think this is going to happen, but I'm
- 28:58just saying this testament to his athleticism.
- 29:00You could line them up as a as an outside edge guy and you'll
- 29:04put on another 4050 lbs on him, be about 6-4 and a half, 260, do
- 29:08some damage there on that line of scrimmage.
- 29:10But yeah, Jax is going to be kind of an emerging target.
- 29:13And the big thing for me is that that surprised a lot of people
- 29:16when Cooper got to Iowa, it was how good he was so quickly.
- 29:21But think about the level of football he grew up playing,
- 29:24right? I mean, he's an Iowa high school
- 29:25legend, but it's not exactly a a big high school.
- 29:29I get this competition is not great.
- 29:30So what's that transition period going to be like once Jax gets
- 29:34on campus at Iowa? Is he going to be able to adjust
- 29:37like his brother did? Or is he give you like most
- 29:40other people and needs a little bit of time to kind of grow into
- 29:42himself? So again, I think it's good that
- 29:45he's this size early because he'll know how to move and
- 29:47utilize his body once he gets in that tight end room.
- 29:51But ultimately, I mean, again, this is a really good pick up I
- 29:53think for in Iowa 2027 class trend that's #20 overall by the
- 29:5924/7 sports ranking. So, I mean, you know, it took
- 30:02them a little bit to get going, but they've been reeling in the
- 30:05commitments here over the last few weeks.
- 30:07Over to some basketball. Let's start on the women's side.
- 30:09Ladies first. Number one, UConn, boy, they
- 30:12look like #1 My big take away, though, it wasn't just the 26
- 30:16turnovers. It was a lot of times it wasn't
- 30:19the ones that they're athletic. They make a play.
- 30:21You know, it was the times not going out and, and catching the
- 30:25ball right, just waiting for it to get to you and somebody steps
- 30:28in front. It was not being lazy on the
- 30:30pass, actually get a little velocity behind it.
- 30:32It was those kind of turnovers. You don't have to play perfect,
- 30:35but you got to play clean. And the Iowa women certainly
- 30:37didn't play clean on Saturday. No, they didn't.
- 30:40You're right. I think that was the most
- 30:41frustrating thing. But give credit, like you, you
- 30:44said it, give credit to UConn. I think that is the best UConn
- 30:47team they've had. And again, this is no shot at
- 30:50Page, Becker's or any other former players.
- 30:52That's the best and deepest UConn team I've seen probably in
- 30:54the last eight or nine years. Like Sarah Strong, I thought was
- 30:58the MVP of that team last year. She looks like she could be a
- 31:00top 15 WNBA player tomorrow. Like she is that good.
- 31:03She's going to be the number one pick whenever she leaves.
- 31:06I think UConn is a national title favorite.
- 31:08But Iowa, you're right, the unforced errors were there.
- 31:11I think that, you know, you did see some good stretches of play
- 31:14from Layla Hayes when she was out there.
- 31:16Chit chat, right, with what Iowa got out of her in the transfer
- 31:20portal and writes willingness to be able to become a shot creator
- 31:24and a shot maker at a high level.
- 31:26Boy, her ceiling looks like it's that completely different level.
- 31:29But ultimately, this is a young team going into a hostile
- 31:32environment because again, I always give you the favorite
- 31:34most Rd. venues. That's just the way the
- 31:37reality's been over the last several years.
- 31:39I think it's going to continue. They were not going to be the
- 31:41favorite in that place near that close to U Conn and how much
- 31:45they love basketball. So again, you think about
- 31:47ideally, you think about Layla Hayes, you think about some of
- 31:49these younger players right now, Trent, that experience they got
- 31:53and the standard which they can strive for.
- 31:55I really think that's going to be a difference maker for this
- 31:58program for the rest of the year.
- 31:59And again, I think 2 years from now and we're interviewing these
- 32:02girls when there's, you know, juniors and seniors, they're
- 32:05going to be able to look back at that game and say that's what
- 32:07really taught me to get to that next level.
- 32:09But you're right, a lot to improve on.
- 32:11But again, I also think you wanted to get kind of a
- 32:14foundation of where Iowa's at because look, they didn't play
- 32:17great. Trent, you're not going to be
- 32:18able to convince me it's not a top 15 team in the country.
- 32:21I still think Iowa's capable of making a Sweet 16.
- 32:24I'm right there with you. And the upside of this team I
- 32:27think is bigger than we what we've seen some past years.
- 32:30It's still a really young team. Yeah, they got Stolky, who we
- 32:33all remember from the championship game runs and
- 32:35Fierbach and and obviously McCabe on the outside shooting
- 32:38the ball. We know those.
- 32:39But the rest of the this squad is incredibly young.
- 32:41That leads to the question. Another young player and a new
- 32:43player, Emily Rodriguez, didn't make the trip out to New York.
- 32:46What's the latest on Rodriguez's front?
- 32:48Yeah. I mean, I think we're going to
- 32:50learn a lot here when Iowa has the next game against Penn State
- 32:53because obviously word came out about about Rodriguez and and
- 32:56she's, you know, currently away from the team.
- 32:58And I have a couple takes on this trend.
- 33:00I want your opinion on this too, because when Jan was asked point
- 33:04blank if she was still part of the program, she said, as of
- 33:06now, yes. So again, I don't want to vilify
- 33:10Emily Rodriguez when we don't know the full story, right?
- 33:14But at the same time, do you know how hard it is to take off
- 33:18someone like Jan Jensen, who is Miss Sunshine, doesn't talk bad
- 33:24about anybody. And again, I'm not.
- 33:26I don't know the situation because you think about Emily
- 33:29Rodriguez. She grew up her first 16 years
- 33:31of life in the Dominican Republic.
- 33:32Moved to Florida. Two years of high school,
- 33:35they're played one year at UCF and then moved to Iowa.
- 33:38That is such a culture shock in a transition that very few
- 33:43people I feel like in the Midwest could appreciate or
- 33:46understand. Maybe not appreciate, but
- 33:47understand, right. So I think there's other aspects
- 33:50to everything. But if if she's not on the
- 33:53sideline against Penn State, I I still think right now there's a
- 33:58chance she comes back, But I'll be I'll level a few man.
- 34:01I think there's a non zero chance that Emily Rodriguez is
- 34:03done as a Hawkeye. I do think that possibilities on
- 34:07the table, you think about the semester break, what better way
- 34:09to kind of step away from the team and move wherever she was
- 34:12going to move or take her next steps on her journey.
- 34:15This is probably about that time frame again.
- 34:17The door is still. Open for her, but I'm very
- 34:20interested about how all this develops because again, I do
- 34:24think there is a chance that Emily has done at Iowa.
- 34:27Yeah, I would say that's probably the betting favorite,
- 34:29you know, bringing it to my world, the betting favorites
- 34:31probably that she's going to depart as opposed to return.
- 34:33It's not a non zero chance. I think it goes both ways, but I
- 34:36think that's certainly all the way that I'd be leaning at this
- 34:38point. Hey, final minute with you,
- 34:39David. I do think it's trending in that
- 34:41direction. Yeah, I agree with you on that.
- 34:43David, last thing men's team played here in Des Moines,
- 34:46domination against Bucknell 9439 in that one.
- 34:50The story to me though, my biggest take take away was both
- 34:53Hassan coming in and the applause when he was splashing
- 34:57down a couple of those threes that he was getting for the fans
- 34:59in attendance and then getting fool Garris going again.
- 35:02We've talked about a ton. He is The X Factor.
- 35:04If this team is going to be not just a good team, good enough to
- 35:07be the tournament, but a step beyond that.
- 35:09I think Alvero fool Garris is the guy that'll take him there.
- 35:13Yeah, I agree with you 100%. I wasn't sure if he's going to
- 35:16be the biggest X Factor going into the year, but the team
- 35:19flows so much better when he's engaged, right when he's out on
- 35:22the perimeter, when he's in the passing lanes, creating steals,
- 35:25getting those turnovers, getting out in transition.
- 35:27The team plays with more of an elevated sense of confidence.
- 35:30And again, this is not really great Bucknell team, but I think
- 35:33when full Garris is confident and he stays out foul trouble,
- 35:36Iowa's defense works better. I think they run better in
- 35:38transition and I think there's a lot more pressure off of Bennett
- 35:42starts. The shoulder did not have to
- 35:44create everything full Garris is capable of that.
- 35:46So they are the number 25 team, the AP top 25 today.
- 35:50I think that's well deserved, but we're going to see what
- 35:52happens. I I really like this team.
- 35:54I think it's a lot of fun to watch.

- 36:38of the year. Yes, we come down to the stretch
- 36:40run. It's the 49ers and the Colts
- 36:43next Monday night. Little bit different, though.

- 36:57Ken will be back with us tomorrow for our final show of
- 37:03Christmas week. Hope everybody's ready to go.
- 37:05We got some shopping still to do.
- 37:07We're behind the 8 ball is always though used a mail a
- 37:11little bit more than normally do but still got to make that trip
- 37:13out to the mall. Got a couple other stops on the
- 37:15agenda before we get to Christmas time and looking
- 37:18forward to that. Looking forward to tonight.
- 37:21And yes, the music. Let's play it.
- 37:25No, not that one, this one. There we go.
- 37:30Mr. Monday night seeking suspicion and that's all it is.
- 37:36Colts with old Man Rivers hangs around going to grab the hat.
- 37:41The 5 1/2 for the Colts on A5 game losing streak.
- 37:44Charge up atmosphere. Colts defense, though not what
- 37:49they were at the beginning of the season, makes enough to keep
- 37:52this one interesting. We will be entertained at
- 37:54minimum. Going to grab the five and a
- 37:56half. Three other plays for this
- 37:58evening, one starting in less than 10 minutes.
- 38:02Tulsa, one of the stories of the mid major level beat.
- 38:05You and I handled the Panthers, one of their two losses this
- 38:08year. They're laying 16 1/2 against
- 38:11Denver. The Pioneers, though, they keep
- 38:13it snug, going to grab the 16 1/2 tonight.
- 38:16Kansas against Davidson, lay the 16 1/2 in that one and I'm going
- 38:20to play the Panthers tonight. You and I getting 12 1/2 out at
- 38:24Saint Mary's. Saint Mary's, I thought they
- 38:26were going to have a step back this season.
- 38:28They're not Gonzaga good, but boy, year after year after year,
- 38:31so good out there. We're going to grab the Panthers
- 38:34on the 12 1/2 this evening. That will do it for today.
- 38:38Tomorrow, normal show. Ken, we'll be back in the fold
- 38:42and glad to have him back aboard with us.
- 38:44Enjoy the day, enjoy the bowl game.
- 38:46Wazoo. Utah State, a battle 7UP in
- 38:50wazoo with the lead in that one coming up next.
- 38:53It's off the bench. Sean and Lucas got you covered.
- 38:55They'll take you up until 5:00, then overtime.
- 38:58Iowa, we'll talk to you again tomorrow.
- 39:00Have a great day. It's Miller and Cotton on the
- 39:02Iowa Sports Radio Network.
