- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. I actually have you with me
- 0:30today while I'm doing a chore, which is changing the sheets on
- 0:34the bed. Now I know this may seem really
- 0:36strange as to why is she doing this today.
- 0:39But you know, I often talk about, you know, habits and how
- 0:44they they shape us as well as our mindset in the morning and
- 0:48making the bed. And I am the person every day
- 0:52that I like. If I am alone, if my husband's
- 0:54traveling, I get up, I make the bed instantaneously, if not when
- 0:59he gets up, because I'm always up before everybody else,
- 1:04literally up with the chickens. And he, I will, you know, wait
- 1:08till he's awake to make the bed. And the joke has often been
- 1:11like, jeez, the second I get out of the bed, you make the bed.
- 1:14And it's true. I'm on bed watch.
- 1:15I want the bed made. And I didn't grow up like this.
- 1:19I didn't have to. Nobody was all over me about
- 1:22make your bed the second you get up.
- 1:23None of that didn't happen that way.
- 1:26Over time, I kind of developed this habit on my own, you know,
- 1:32like just AII wanted that room neat and clean, and I wanted to
- 1:37be able to come back to my room as it in high school and have it
- 1:41be organized. I the room itself.
- 1:44When I grew up, I was a creative and my room was always a
- 1:47disaster. And my parents didn't even know
- 1:49what to do about that. And to be quite honest with you,
- 1:52I'm still shocked about how it goes.
- 1:54But I understand it in a, in a different way now because when I
- 1:57am doing a creative project, it, it is a disaster around me.
- 2:01Like if you look at the desktop on my computer, it is a mess.
- 2:05Like there's just files everywhere.
- 2:07It's organized chaos to me though, because I know I've got
- 2:10little piles and those little piles mean something.
- 2:13And each one of them represents what's going on in the project.
- 2:16It's like my creative zone. So over time I learned what that
- 2:20room was all about because it was my space to be creative and
- 2:23do whatever I wanted. I had all my stuff in there and
- 2:25I could be as creative as I wanted to be, but my bed was
- 2:28always made. And clean sheet day, which is
- 2:32what I am actually doing right now.
- 2:35Clean sheet day is a thing. I love clean sheet day and I
- 2:38often wonder to myself, I wonder how often people change their
- 2:42sheets. Like how often do you change
- 2:44your sheets? I don't know.
- 2:45I would love to have clean sheet day every day.
- 2:49I just love clean sheets. I love sleeping on clean sheets.
- 2:52I love the smell of clean sheets.
- 2:54So why don't I do it more often? Well, it seems rather indulgent
- 2:58to change the sheets every single day.
- 3:00So I have a habit of changing them about every five days,
- 3:05maybe 7 at the most, where I'll just, OK, let's change the
- 3:09sheets, let's change the sheets. Over time, I have recognized how
- 3:14excited this stupid thing makes me.
- 3:16And I wonder, I'm like, okay, am I the only person out there that
- 3:19feels this way? Do other people feel this way?
- 3:22Is it just like a habit? And then, you know, obviously
- 3:25you listen to all the military people talk about how it's so
- 3:29important to make your bed every day because it gives you 1
- 3:32accomplishment. And I fully buy into that.
- 3:35Like making your bed every day gives you a full blown
- 3:38accomplishment ASAP. And it feels good to know you
- 3:42got that done. For me, it's not even just so
- 3:45much that it's the end of the day.
- 3:47After a hard day, coming back and saying, OK, I have this
- 3:53glorious little respite, a spot where I can go to truly like a
- 3:59sanctuary that I can go to and curl up and relax.
- 4:03It's like a place where nobody comes to bother me.
- 4:06I don't have electronics. I don't have a television in the
- 4:09room. I do have an iPad in here, but
- 4:12it's only curated stuff that I want to see.
- 4:15I don't even have social media on the iPad.
- 4:17That's the crazy part. I keep it super clean.
- 4:20It's just got some apps on it that I can be creative with.
- 4:24I have YouTube on it, but I don't have like it's not there's
- 4:28no like access to me on it. Even I'm not even subscribed in
- 4:32that. I'm popping it up on on just
- 4:35Google and I'm just looking at stuff because I don't want to be
- 4:40hooked. I don't want to be hooked.
- 4:42And the point of all of this is when you start to create a
- 4:46little space like this and you feel at the end of your day like
- 4:49you have something. Yes, you've got the
- 4:51accomplishment of making the bed.
- 4:53And that's grand and wonderful. And I agree with it
- 4:55wholeheartedly. But for me, the bigger flip side
- 4:58of it is if I created a space that at the end of the day, when
- 5:02I come back to it, I'm going to feel like this is perfect.
- 5:07I can go in there and I can actually just relax.
- 5:10Or if I created a space that when I walk into it, there's
- 5:13clothes all over the bed that haven't been folded because a
- 5:16lot of people use their beds. I don't personally, I've never
- 5:19done this, but they use their beds to dump their laundry on.
- 5:23And I think that's a huge challenge because when you come
- 5:27back at the end of the day where you're supposed to go to sleep
- 5:30is supposed to like make it cozy.
- 5:32It's like, it's like the part where you go to heal.
- 5:36So you shouldn't have things all over your bed.
- 5:38In my opinion. You should clean up that space,
- 5:41make your bedroom a place where you can go and recover from the
- 5:45world, where you can like feel yourself healing overnight,
- 5:49where you know that if you go and tuck yourself in there,
- 5:52you're going to be able to come out in the morning and be a much
- 5:56happier, better person. So just my.
- 5:58Little. Bit of advice on clean sheet day
- 6:02and I hope that you find that tonight when you go to sleep.
- 6:05All right, my friends, have a blessed day and I'll see you
- 6:07tomorrow. Bye.
