- Lucas: Welcome back to the show. We are Episode 281. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, we are so glad you are here. Luna: Yeah. Last episode was all about basting and glazing. I felt very professional pouring sauce over my chicken. Lucas: It was impressive. But now we have a problem. You finished the glaze, but you forgot to check the time. Luna: Oh no. Did it burn? Lucas: Not yet. But in French cooking, knowing exactly when something is done is everything. Today, we are learning how to talk about time in the kitchen. Luna: Okay. I need this. My pasta always turns into mush because I lose track. Lucas: Let's start with the first phrase. When you put something in the oven, or start boiling water, you often hear this instruction. Lucas: Dans dix minutes. Luna: Dans dix minutes. Lucas: Exactly. It means 'in ten minutes'. It tells you when the event will happen in the future. Luna: So if I say Dans dix minutes, I am looking at my watch right now? Lucas: Yes. Imagine the timer beeping. The food is ready. Dans dix minutes. Luna: Dans dix minutes. Okay. That feels useful. Lucas: Now, imagine you are halfway through. You look at the clock. There is still time left. Lucas: Il reste cinq minutes. Luna: Il reste cinq minutes. Lucas: Good. This means 'there are five minutes left'. It is very common when reading a recipe step by step. Luna: Il reste cinq minutes. So the soup needs five more minutes before I stop stirring. Lucas: Perfect. You are getting the rhythm. Now, the most important moment. You open the oven door. Steam rises. You take a bite. Lucas: C'est prêt. Luna: C'est prêt. Lucas: Yes. 'It is ready'. Simple. Powerful. This is what you say to your family when you call them to dinner. Luna: C'est prêt! Everyone come eat! Lucas: Exactly. And finally, if you are confused, or you cannot find your timer, you might say this command. Lucas: Regarde l'horloge. Luna: Regarde l'horloge. Lucas: Look at the clock. It helps you stay focused on those other phrases. Luna: Regarde l'horloge. Got it. Lucas: Let's try a quick scene. You are making a roast. You put it in the oven. What do you say? Luna: Dans vingt minutes. It will be done in twenty minutes. Lucas: Right. Then ten minutes later, you check it. What do you say? Luna: Il reste dix minutes. There are ten minutes left. Lucas: Correct. Then the final minute passes. You pull it out. What is the big word? Luna: C'est prêt! It is ready! Lucas: Nailed it. Just one last thing before we pause. Sometimes people forget where their timer is. Luna: Oh yeah. I lost mine yesterday. I was just guessing. Lucas: That is risky. If you are unsure, you should tell yourself to Regarde l'horloge. Look at the clock. Luna: I guess I need to trust my eyes more than my feelings. Lucas: Definitely. By the way, if these episodes are helping you feel more confident in the kitchen and in life, that is wonderful to hear. Luna: It really does make a difference. Having these small tools makes the whole process less stressful. Lucas: It does. And listener support is what keeps this ad-free and consistent. A couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, if you've gotten something out of them. That's F. E. X. I. N. G. O. Luna: Yeah. It helps us keep recording these little moments for you. Thank you for that. Lucas: Back to the kitchen. Let's repeat our four phrases one more time to lock them in. Luna: Okay. Dans dix minutes. Lucas: Il reste cinq minutes. Luna: C'est prêt. Lucas: Regarde l'horloge. Luna: I love these. They are so simple but I feel like I'm actually cooking now. Lucas: You are. You are managing time, not just watching food. That is a chef skill. Luna: Thanks, Chef Lucas. Lucas: Practice these until we chat again. See you next time.
