- 0:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's already welcome, and it's that time of the week.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_01]: It is these suitors on SI podcast as we count down to Oklahoma and Michigan, the massive one in Norman, America.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_01]: This Saturday, we got the whole squad here.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm Ryan Chapman hanging out in Moore.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_01]: Who've up in the 9-1-8 John?
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's, I feel like we've been so disjointed disconnect, we missed you on Saturday.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I missed being there on Saturday.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_02]: My first game haven't been to in-person in 70, thanks 70 consecutive games.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_02]: A little bit of a heartbreaker, but that's what we're at now.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_02]: All plans are this week that I'm going to be in the press box for the Michigan Game Guys I got to admit.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_02]: I was sifting through the T-shirts, looking for a good clean T-shirt to wear on camera.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, I came up with this one, Cougar Football, Go Cougs, yeah, Coach Boyles.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks shout-out, thanks for the T-shirt in the hat.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: Can't have everybody in hats though, that would be limit on the zoom call.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_02]: But as I was sifting through the t-shirts, I was like, oh my vacation t-shirt, that'd be a great one to wear.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_02]: And I slipped on this t-shirt and I have the upper peninsula of.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_02]: Michigan.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_02]: I thought, wait a minute, you can't wear that one on the sooner podcast.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: You idiot, so pay the coups represent.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: It would be the first time the upper peninsula has made its way down in Norman as there's one other matchup.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about all that fun stuff.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: We also got our man Carson Field back in Norman Carson.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: Have you enjoyed the first part of this big, big, big week in Norman, America.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's been a lot of fun so far.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_00]: Disclaimer though, this blue and yellow hat not a Michigan Wolverine's hat.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: Buffalo Sabers in HL don't worry.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: Not a Wolverine's Homer in the slightest.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: Very excited for this week's game.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: It was awesome to be out there for the first time in several months last week.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: So I am juiced for this one.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, before we go forward, we're going to take a half step back as you probably saw who've not with us.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: So he didn't get to give his thoughts on the post game podcast.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: Don't worry, the full squad will be back in the press box and who will get to experience firsthand our new Microsoft.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: That was pretty proud of myself for who've before we roll this thing totally into Michigan week and just start ripping into the Wolverines and and look at this from all the angles.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: 35 to 3.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: The job material era begins in Norman.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: We got all of our thoughts out of the post game pod.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: What was your thoughts as you were watching that thing from home?
- 2:33[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I picked 51 to 10.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma FCS school to open this open the season right.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_02]: I figured, you know, they're going to roll.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_02]: They did roll, but they took a little while to get going.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_02]: First two drives, not good, 3 and out, and a turn over.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_02]: But they got going after that.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_02]: No big deal.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_02]: Iron out the kinks.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_02]: The running game needs help.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_02]: Um, as Ben Arbockel said yesterday, it's not all on the offensive line.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's not all on the tight ends.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's not all on the run and backs.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we've, we've heard that for most of the last three or four years.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's all on everybody, but we all know if the offensive line will just block somebody in short yardage, okay?
- 3:12[SPEAKER_02]: And not get knocked backwards, not get stuffed in the hole, then everybody else's job, including the run-and-back, gets a lot easier.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: So John material comes to the rescue, 392 yard passing, dude is, I think he's for real.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_02]: And you know what I think about some of his misses?
- 3:28[SPEAKER_02]: You see some of his short throws came up really short, like he threw a seven yard pass for yards.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_02]: Let's go on there.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think John ran around so much and he was so hyped, you know, emotionally.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think he physically kind of ran out of gas.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_02]: I really do.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think he, not that it's a fitness thing.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_02]: I think he just kind of hit the wall.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_02]: And you could see on some of those short throws, his mechanics got off, his footwork got off, got a little bit disjointed, and his, you know, he ends up skipping one to somebody.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_02]: A couple of times that happened and you're like, huh, what's going on?
- 4:01[SPEAKER_02]: So it's just a mechanics thing.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_02]: He's gonna clean that up.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: I wouldn't worry about it.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's a hell of a passer.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_02]: You might notice,
- 4:08[SPEAKER_02]: He's all of a sudden, according to some people, the Heisman Frontrunner.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_02]: Week two, here we come, Michigan Wolverines, coming to town, and John Matiers, that the front of the Heisman Pack already here we go.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_02]: Ryan, we're going to New York.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_01]: Good news for us, I would like to share a solid New York bagel.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: Who would I have traveled the country together?
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: Not been to New York City though.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to see how New York City treats John Hoover and John Hoover treats New York City.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: I believe what they call in the professional wrestling world, John, I believe that exact phenomenon is called getting blown up where a young guy in a big spot gets so excited and is going so big early on in a match.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: that there's a moment or two where they just like run out of gas, forget what they're supposed to do, all that stuff.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of felt like that was the case with Jammeter.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if anyone watches the like, oh, you content that gets put out on social media and stuff like that, but I think if you saw the clips of the speech that Jammeter had given, he was obviously very excited to finally be out there in front of the 85,000, all that fun stuff.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: uh... real quick at these guys did not get much love and it wasn't their fault and it wasn't because they played poorly uh... once you make it the defense because they only played forty seven snaps overmatched Illinois state and uh... in a weird way john how far has it come from the start of the minerals area to now that the defense is so dominant against an absentee that we just don't talk about it like it all about it's it's normal right that they shut somebody out like that uh... should have shut them out that uh... cashed in after a turnover right so
- 5:36[SPEAKER_02]: Um, yeah, listen, uh, two, two plays, I think they got kind of caught in calls in the first two drives where the running back goes for 24 and the quarterback goes for 23 and you're like, what the hell is going on?
- 5:48[SPEAKER_02]: I thought this defense was good.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_02]: That never came close to happening again.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_02]: I think one guy got out the gate for like 14 or 18, where was just a few yards there and there.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_02]: No big deal.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, they didn't, then the scoreboard, you know, they didn't hit the end zone.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_02]: It's, uh,
- 6:05[SPEAKER_02]: What'd you say?
- 6:06[SPEAKER_02]: 46 total plays, total 46 offensive snaps, that's something that is indicative of a defense that is out there to do work, they do their business, they get their business done, and they turn it over back to the offense.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_02]: Those guys, they're not hotdogging.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that was so impressive.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_02]: Everything except those first two drives, which is interesting.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_02]: First two drives on offense, first two drives on defense.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_02]: we're sitting here going I'm not really sure what's happened then by the end of the game of course everything is as it should be but again and we heard this a lot throughout last week and I heard it over the weekend Illinois State a quality quality FCS opponent this is a team that's hoping to make a playoff run might even pursue a national championship who knows and they're they're they're they're pulling their guys get quarterback got knocked around a little bit and they're like okay we need the
- 6:55[SPEAKER_02]: rain him at a little bit so he doesn't get injured for the season uh because Oklahoma was getting after him started knocking him around a little bit so a little bit pressure on the off the edges a little bit of pressure for our thought the defensive line played fantastic they've stone right played really well and then the db's what they have 34 yards passing the db's were on fire so great game all around for Oklahoma even the special teams got into it a little bit
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if we saw some put returns, especially from Satania, we saw Jay not almost what I assume, which was go against what was planned to maybe return a kick off that he took it.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think he like misjudged that because he's like, I'm not supposed to return this not supposed to return this of crap the ball's coming.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_01]: Then he thought about it for like half a second and then the ball bounced and then he was like, well, okay, that now we're off.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: So, that leads us into what is a massive week car.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: So, you and I were in Norman on Monday night talking to the players.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: We got the captains.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: For Illinois State Week, so they couldn't just pull the OU taxes of you talk to the captains and that's it, but not a lot to glean from the players.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_01]: They're excited.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: They were on their best behavior, trying not to put any bull to poor material.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: Carson that Brett Bendibles was like juice.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: This was like one of the more jovial, excitable, energetic press conferences for Brett Bendibles, who usually, like, spend so much time breaking down, filled on Sunday and Monday that we get, like, a little sat Bendibles on Tuesday before he ramps back in the game.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: It was kind of fun to have that version
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: It was, in coaches' vinnables, included, we'll tell you we prepare for every game the same.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: There's absolutely a difference for every coach, and I'm not picking on vinnables here, and it was cool to see how excited he is for this matchup.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't directly say this is the game, but...
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: A non-conference game, this important, I mean, Vinnables knows it's important, a players do, big 10 SEC, it's become such a rivalry, especially with the big, the big 10 winning the last two national championships.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: He obviously has a ton of respect for Shuro Moore, everything they do as a program at Michigan.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: This year's team with Bryce Underwood, some good running backs, some big receivers, very complimentary, and I just,
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think he knows the importance of what a win can do.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_00]: The hype that I'll use starting to get with material seeing some Heisman buzz.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you being in the top 25 and both polls now.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: Michigan obviously being a top 15 team.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think he knows how massive this could be and kind of could be a landmark win for vinnables who obviously we know kind of fighting for his job this year.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, John, last year, part of the theme of the season was so many, either first time matchups or the first time that Oakland was played in Baton Rouge or like, oh, you LSU had only played in bowl games.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: It was the first matchup ever for South Carolina.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: This one here, I mean, they played in the 75 season New Year's Day 76.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: Orange ball, obviously decisive in helping Oklahoma capture an national title.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Outside of that, it's kind of insane for everything that Oklahoma and Michigan have been through there and the entirety of college football, the entire history of the sport.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: One meeting only, never on a campus.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: I know if you head to the website, OklahomaSoonersonasside.com, who've had a column Wednesday morning kind of talking about the grind it's been almost to get to this point, to get to Saturday, the people that put the wheels in the motion for this game.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: One of them is in his last year.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: The other ones off in the world of dominoes, I guess.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of insane that we're finally here, a game that was announced what?
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: 16, 15 years ago.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: 2,014 or T. So 11.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_02]: Offerance was in that when this contracts were announced, I'm going to give you some a three layered history lesson here real quick, Joe Castiglay on back in 2014.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_02]: We're so proud that we can roll out a contract with the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon at the time.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_02]: has resigned.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_02]: Immediately in 2014 he didn't finish.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't stick around to see the contract play out.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_02]: He went to work for Domino.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_02]: He's the CEO of Domino's now.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, joke stickly own day brand and sign contract.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_02]: One guy goes to Domino's and the other guy stays another 15 years until what 12 years is that.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_02]: Let it digger.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's so weird to me.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_02]: Anyway,
- 11:05[SPEAKER_02]: Joe said back in 2014, I've been trying for 10 to 12 years to get this thing done with Michigan.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_02]: So literally 25 years he's been trying before the game was actually played.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_02]: He was, you know, hope we get this Michigan game played.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_02]: I sure like to play Michigan at 25 years.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_02]: That tells you right there that your athletic director is all about business.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he, he gets things done as well as anybody in the country ever has at this level.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: So shout out, Joe, Kstigley,
- 11:35[SPEAKER_02]: the other the second layer of history you mentioned it the the orange ball um two nineteen seventy five season seventy six orange ball January 1st i talked to two sooner players in that game and of course the head coach himself very switzer yesterday and god it was fun rehashing those days and uh... joe washton take her own guys like that who were absolutely instrumental in that game in that season
- 12:01[SPEAKER_02]: a couple of superhero performances by those guys.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_02]: To win Oklahoma, uh, what would that have been national championship number five, right?
- 12:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, one, two, three, and then four or five.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_02]: So that was all you fifth national championship, the last time these teams played
- 12:16[SPEAKER_02]: A quick little weird little, the big 10 guys, this is so bizarre.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_02]: The big 10, 75 was the first year that the big 10 said, okay, we can have more than one team play in a bowl game, they used to have a rule that said only one team could play in a bowl game.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_02]: And so every year it was the Rose Bowls, the Rose Bowls, but no big 10 team ever played in any other bowl game.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_02]: How freaking bizarre is that?
- 12:39[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, so here we are now, these guys are playing finally.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_02]: got the number one wins team of all time a thousand and what fourteen wins thousand fifteen I think now in Michigan.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_02]: OU ranks number six all-time nine hundred fifty wins or nine fifty one now.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_02]: It is it is insane that this is the first time they've actually ever played.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_02]: Now the third layer of history I'm going to pitch a friend of mine Ivan Mayzel has written a new book
- 13:09[SPEAKER_02]: On Frank Laihi, former Notre Dame coach, fantastic book.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_02]: I finished it last week, written a review on it.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_02]: We'll post it sometime next week when things are a little slower.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_02]: But Frank, it's funny.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_02]: Notre Dame and Frank Laihi were like this, and they were battling Michigan every year.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_02]: They hated Michigan.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_02]: Notre Dame hated Michigan.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_02]: Michigan this and Michigan that army was always in there as well.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_02]: But in 1950,
- 13:35[SPEAKER_02]: Notre Dame stopped doing that.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_02]: And Oklahoma took over and started taking things the other way.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_02]: So it's like they didn't quite cross paths.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_02]: This frankly, he, this book, didn't quite cross paths with Bud Wilkinson.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_02]: They did a couple of times Notre Dame won both of those games head to head.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_02]: But that was the first two times that are the last two seasons of Franklin.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_02]: He's career.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_02]: He beat OU and then he retired.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_02]: was forced out was like so there's in this review that I wrote there's kind of a history and a parallel with not just bud Wilkinson but uh and this is Notre Dame we're talking about here this is not Michigan but Michigan was prominently mentioned and it's just it's fascinating the way these things are all intertwined and history and but Wilkinson does this and the next thing you know Barry Switzers do in that there's a lot of parallels between Franklin
- 14:30[SPEAKER_01]: next week.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's that that's the cool thing about a matchup like this, right?
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: Is that same thing when you talk about Ohio State or getting together.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's why you're so fortunate that we get to cover Oakland, Texas every year that that when you talk about the history of the game, this is a game that would have mattered at any point.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: Nationally from 1950 to today, 2025, if Oklahoma and Michigan hopped on the field together, it's again that would have been one of the few and actually televised ones before Oklahoma sued the NCAA and obviously it's the showpiece game this weekend.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: Analyze it for every little bit, but I want to pull up that thread that Carson to kind of presented here.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone knows in Oklahoma land the significance of what this game is, what this season is for print venables, what I need to ask though coming back the other way is, John, I know it's week two and it feels like it insane question, but is this game a must win for print venables if you want to set the 2025 season up or do you look around the
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: What looked like on week one Ohio State Texas, my kind of takeaway from that is good for Ohio State.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: I think those are two really good football teams, same thing coming out of LSU Clemson, good for LSU for getting the win, but I think those are two really good football teams.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: Do you see Auburn play maybe better than expectation, Tennessee play better than expectation, look up and down this schedule and say,
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: It Brent Vendibles wants to have the year he wants to have that it's got to start on Saturday.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there's two ways to look at this must win.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely not.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_02]: This season of this schedule is full of opportunities for this Oklahoma football team to climb and jump and win and you know play for a championship or whatever.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_02]: They've got a long road ahead of them week two is not a must win.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_02]: Now.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_02]: If Oklahoma, all of a sudden, wants to be thrown into that discussion of a top 10, top 6, top 12 team, whatever, you know, get to the playoff and compete for a championship and have your guy at the front of the Heisman race and be the bad ass of college football, right?
- 16:30[SPEAKER_02]: Like Lincoln Riley's teams used to be early on, like Bob Stoops's teams used to be, right?
- 16:36[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you were never out of the top five.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, if you want to be a top five team all season and being that discussion all season then yes, this is a must win game if you just want it, you know, cruise through and kick some butt in the SEC later and get to the playoff then no this thing's not a must win about but if you want to have that hammer all season you got to win you got to be Michigan.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_00]: I agree 100% with what John said, it's not a must win in terms of, oh, they're eliminated from the playoff.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's not the old days of the 14 college football playoff, the two team BCS national championship.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: There's absolutely still a path for OU to get into the playoff if they lose this game.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_00]: Heck, even if they go 9 and 3 with how hard this schedule is, there's a backdoor way into the playoff I feel like.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: But from a moment some standpoint, before obviously Temple shouldn't be too challenging of a game next week, but before getting Auburn, two weeks after that, getting Texas, and then it's the gauntlet after that, it would be huge to get a win against a team like Michigan that can play defensively, see some improvement in the run game, get material against a quality opponent like Michigan, there are so many wins that owe you can take from this game if they beat the Wolverines on Saturday.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: But must win, no, this team season is not over if they lose the World Reigns, it's a day and good football team on the other end that is, I mean, they've gotten a lot better for middle of the season last year, Michigan's really good, but as far as beating, I think there are fewer gimmies than we thought on the schedule after seeing what happened in college football between sure it was against Central Arkansas, but Missouri looked really good, but probably it looks like he might be a problem, Jackson Arnold and Auburn looked very good
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think every team in the SEC is pretty decent this year as far as the ones that owe you actually plays against, so that if you were Gimmie's and because of that, I think it is a huge momentum game for OU.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_01]: Let us be a lesson kids.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_01]: This is why you seize control the podcast so you can ask a binary question and then you can chop it up in the middle.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_01]: When I was doing radio with the great chism Holland, we used to have the separator of must win versus really got to have it.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_01]: And for me, this is a really got to have it for Brett Vendibles for a couple of reasons.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_01]: First off in.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: If Oklahoma's this game is probably a combination of not able to run the football effectively enough to help out John Matier and then you look at it and it's either the defense did a lot for a long time but couldn't hold out at the very very in, maybe there's a game management issue, maybe there's not, maybe there's that.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_01]: thing from early last year where an Auburn or a Tennessee is able to hit this secondary vertically one or two times.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: If you win this game, that's showing the view that from week one to week two, whether it be health in running back or offensive line, you've been able to take that step forward.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: Things we didn't really see was much motion, geometry, actually in the running game.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_01]: If you bring that in, it does that help this thing out.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_01]: But I also think too from
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: The chance Oklahoma has to rewrite the story on the season early.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like if if they win this game, they're not in the play off.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: If they lose this game, they're not out of the play off, but for Brett Venmels in his program, they just spent an entire off season taking it in the teeth on the recruiting trail.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_01]: They had their wins, but everyone's out there like, that staff's not going to be there.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want to commit to Oklahoma.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: What's Oklahoma going to do?
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: bring in 60 or 70 high school kids from this class, the next class, the next class, and invite everybody into their home on Saturday night and say, hey, we got this really cool thing coming.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_01]: There's no where else in college football.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_01]: This is the ticket, come view this game, and if all cool goes out there and wins, they might drop four more games to rest of the year, but the last thing impression is going to be a rocking
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: all the game presentation that you get, game day, all the bells and whistles, that's going to be the last sea impression in a bunch of people's mind and they're going to be thinking that's not a coaching staff that's on their way out, the door that's a coaching staff that had a bad year, had injuries, has a duo sea, is healthy and is rolling.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_01]: So I do think that for far more than just like playoff, I think this is like a really, really, really, really important weekend for
- 20:44[SPEAKER_01]: Bredbittables and his staff to maybe wash away some of the hot seat talks.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think you can come out of this.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: You'd have to lose five games almost by the middle of November for those hot seat talks to be a conversation around Bredbittables and the suitors again.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's not gunna.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be, hey, if they beat Auburn, gamena is going to be at the state fair in Dallas because it's going to be another massive game for all you like that kind of stuff.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_02]: And Ryan, you mentioned it recruiting this weekend, Oklahoma's gimmick for their recruits has been a poker chip.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_02]: Look, you know, this says boomer sooner or one side, I think I'm an all in on the other.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_02]: So you give this back to me when you're all in, right?
- 21:21[SPEAKER_02]: You give this back to me when you commit to you.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_02]: You're not going to visit other schools.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_02]: You're not going to commit somewhere else.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_02]: You're not going to decimate.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to commit to Oklahoma.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to play for Oklahoma.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_02]: That's their gimmick, right?
- 21:32[SPEAKER_02]: The poker chip.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma went all in, shoved its whole stack of chips in the middle of the table for this Michigan game.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_02]: As a recruiting tool, as a, we got a show number one, they say we got to be Michigan, number two, we got to show them what this program's all about.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_02]: And it's huge.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's a huge weekend.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_02]: Must win sort of, because of that, because of that recruiting thing.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_02]: That's a big angle.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_02]: You got 75 guys on campus for over the next three classes.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_02]: That's a big, big, big thing.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just think if you win this game again, not going to put you in the playoff.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_01]: If you lose it, it's not going to knock you out of the playoff, but if you win this game, Cooper Hackett, he's not walking out of the Norman thinking that Brett Venables is fighting for his job for the next four months.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: He's thinking,
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that was cool.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_01]: Big throw tortillas in Lubbock, which is fun, but you don't get 83,000 people for any Texas tech game, because they don't play in those kind of venues in the big 12.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: You do in the SEC, and you get to go and play against Michigan, stuff like that.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_01]: It'll be interesting too.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_01]: An important thing for maybe a Cooper Hackett could be,
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: Hey Cooper, look out there.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_01]: Do you see a couple of true freshmen on the offensive line?
- 22:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's going to be a possibility this week.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: Sunday night, Brent Minble's had his coaches show he talked about Derek Simmons, the Western Carolina transfer.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: He should be good to go, Michael Vassucy, he should be good to go, he's the side.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: It was also held out of the opener.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: All of that contributed a little bit to Oklahoma's issues right on the football.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_01]: Am I telling you that all three of those guys are back and suddenly the soon as Rush for 500 yards?
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: Probably not, but it's certainly going to help when you look at J. Not.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: out.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: It seems like they've gone one step short of saying that was Illinois State.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: This is Michigan.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_01]: He was hurt.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_01]: We were saving him.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to roll him out there.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_01]: If we don't see a ton of Jade not on Saturday night, I give everyone free reign, not that you need it for me to just like openly question what tomorrow can we do with this running back rotation.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_01]: But John, based off of everyone's talked about it this week, it certainly feels like they're going to unwrap Jade not in with all the fanfare, all the bells and whistles
- 23:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Jegnaut, Fassucy, like you said, we don't know about Sexton, right?
- 23:42[SPEAKER_02]: It didn't look particularly good, but I think Brent mentioned him last night, Monday night, as a possibility to return.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if it's one of those, you know, red-hairing things that you dangled out there.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what the advantage would be saying this offense of linemen's gonna play and that one's not, doesn't affect what plays you call, or who's running the football.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, you're right.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's so weird that, you know, he wasn't healthy enough to practice in training camp.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_02]: We don't we don't see stuff like this very much.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_02]: He's not healthy enough to practice in training camp.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_02]: If he's not healthy enough to practice, guess what, he's not healthy enough to play.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_02]: And then he came in and played and he got one carry late late late in the game 353.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_02]: He gets a carry late in the game gets thrown for three yard loss like, wait, I thought he wasn't healthy.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_02]: Is he not, is he healthy?
- 24:32[SPEAKER_02]: He's not healthy.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_02]: So it's just weird.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's weird what's going on there but he's a he's a difference maker.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_02]: He needs to be on the field and I bet you that as well as as well as Tory Blaylock looked in the in the passing game in particular.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_02]: I think he caught two passes both of them real smooth smooth releases got out and traffic got out of traffic caught the football in stride made a guy miss hit another guy ran over.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_02]: You'll love to see that from a true freshman.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_02]: Now imagine that's Jade Nott, who's a senior in his plate and a version of this offense before and knows exactly.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he is a big difference maker.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: So he's going to be a big part of this game.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_00]: I, yeah, I think the odd situations very weird, especially considering we saw him in a good amount of kick or turn situations against Illinois State.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: Where the heck was he on the ground?
- 25:19[SPEAKER_00]: Was it truly a precautionary thing?
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: Is there something deeper?
- 25:22[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of vagueness to this, but I think we're going to see a lot of him see him in the screen past situation, see him up the middle, see a lot of different ways that Jadenet is used this week against a really stout defense as we've talked about.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it's going to be interesting to see how they split up the carriers because as John said, Tory Blaylock looked fantastic.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: First college game, I thought he was a standout Xavier Robinson did not have a great game against Illinois State.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen what he can do carving up Alabama last year.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm curious to see with, I presume we'll be getting more touches against Michigan, how they split it up still.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: But I like you guys said expect him to play a bigger role this week.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_01]: My personal theory is that Jade Not was instructed were not returning kickoffs today.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_01]: And so you can go out there, you're not gonna take any contact, it's the same kickoff unit.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then I actually think that's why the first kickoff of the game bounced because I think that he,
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: his football program was like oh I got to go catch this kick and then he was like wait a minute hold on my supposed to bear catch and then in the like split second that's when it bounced dribbled at the back of the inzone and then maybe because of the late luck leaving the like if if jay not had come in and not played those three snaps i think it would have been like very cut and dry he missed some time in in fall camp they want to save him for Michigan why put a new film out that i don't think you don't want to be as confused yet he plays the series and it's like
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: Demarco, what are you doing?
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: Do you understand?
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: Demarco does he have a deal with like therapists and Norman, because the fan base is like, what is going on?
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: I need to talk to somebody, make it make sense.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: But the big thing for me is going to be, I'm expecting...
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: Derek Simmons to come back in, start it right tackle.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what that means if it means that you go for Susie or Holland, left tackle, if you just start with the experience of Holland and then work some for Susie.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought that that'd be like, and a weird way kind of harsh on Logan Holland, I thought him and for that, she were kind of the two standouts as far as the offensive line goes.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna show you to see if we see some Jake Mike luck because he came in and it just felt like,
- 27:25[SPEAKER_01]: he has a much like what we've talked about with do you play fissu cd play fogey do you go with the higher ceiling or the lower floor?
- 27:34[SPEAKER_01]: I just think that my club is physically a little bit more dominant than Troy Everett that doesn't mean that Troy Everett's bad by any means but if you're talking about not being able to get any push it's kind of what we saw it's in a weird way how Troy Everett lost his guard job decayed and green in that Iowa state or the Cincinnati game excuse me a couple years ago john you never up there and
- 27:53[SPEAKER_01]: You just saw that Everett did fine.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: Caden Green could actually get push off the football and that was kind of it from there.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Brent clearly and Bill Beanbow obviously, not afraid to play young guys, not played to play freshman.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_02]: And so you talked about the floor and the ceiling.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_02]: Fassus has got a really high ceiling.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_02]: So it would not surprise me, Fogie.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_02]: Didn't particularly grade out great.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_02]: I think we had some comments that on the YouTube channel that he was terrible.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_02]: He wasn't terrible.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_02]: he just was young and inexperienced and doesn't know quite what to do yet.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_02]: He probably got shown a little bit that he's not ready for James, not ready to play at that level just quite yet.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_02]: But I think for, and for Suzy when he goes out there against Michigan on Saturday, he might feel a little bit the same way.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_02]: I like, holy crap, these guys are coming at me a lot harder than you know, Armace and did in practice.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_02]: That was just practice.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_02]: Games are always
- 28:48[SPEAKER_02]: you know crank it up, higher speed, even scrimmages.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody, everybody knows that's been in college football.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody knows scrimmages are at a like a seven eighths kind of speed, right?
- 28:58[SPEAKER_02]: All of those full speed games are full speed, here they come.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_02]: So Fassus is going to have to probably deal with some things that he's not
- 29:07[SPEAKER_02]: had to deal with before.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, that's what, that's what his teammates are there for.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_02]: That's what his coaches are there for.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to help him out of that.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_02]: If Kevin Wilson is being able to help on the sideline again, despite the knee surgery, what the heck was that?
- 29:20[SPEAKER_02]: Kevin, get well, sir.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_02]: Get well soon.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Brent, Vinnables on the SEC teleconference.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_00]: So they kind of talked a little bit about Fogia.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_00]: Overall, it sounded like he was very pleased.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_00]: But he pointed out that there were some faults.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: He got, I think, whooped is the word he used a couple of times.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_00]: But overall, he liked how he did.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's a first college game.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_00]: There are going to be some hiccups, some flaws.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: Vinnables overall was pleased.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_00]: He also said that Fossus, he's going to play a role, didn't specify how much he's going to play against the Wolverines.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_00]: But he made it sound like both foe, J, F, Su, C, some of the younger guys on the offensive line.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_00]: Got to see some game action against Michigan.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_01]: It, uh, I thought the funniest thing was, and again, uh, I think every Oklahoma fan knows this.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: If you want, like, the snap by snap, great outs all that stuff.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_01]: Gaybiker, German, he obviously played it, knows way more about offensive line play than all of us combined times 10, all that stuff.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if that photo is biggest like moment that he got beat was the one where he got the hold and I don't know if he could see it on the broadcast too, but I was kind of cracking up in the press box because he not only did he mess up turn around and hold he knew it immediately because it's the flag has even hit the turf yet and he's already like banging his head and hitting against the turf like he's like oh no oh no oh no and that's the one that got offset by a passenger ferris he got bailed out on the back and on the other side so
- 30:42[SPEAKER_02]: That is a smart freshman right there.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_02]: That is someone who has awareness during the play.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_02]: Like, ah, I should have went left.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_02]: I stepped with the wrong foot or I hit him with the wrong end.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: But my hands on the wrong place or I read it wrong.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_02]: He knew immediately what he did.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_02]: So that's a smart freshman.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's
- 30:56[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see, we will see if he's able to shake off some of those nerves, things like that.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, if things make like a huge step forward, we'll all be able to see it because there's big gash plays from Jade Nott stuff like that.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_01]: Something we've talked about a bunch here in the lead-off or in the lead-off.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_01]: post-game mix, all that stuff coming out of Illinois State is you saw the rushing touchdown from John material, you saw water two moments where he decided to pull it himself and go, but you did not see from John material an actual running game against Illinois State, limiting the hits, all that stuff.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_01]: Between the motions that we didn't see and from what we
- 31:35[SPEAKER_01]: The explosives, the Isaiah satania showed in the pump return game that did not translate to the passing game.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: For me, I have to believe that is satanian burks will be the biggest bit of fisheries of some of those put guys in motion and whether you're given it to a material or a specific canic.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_01]: Burx, Satania, throw in the ball behind the line of Scrimmage cars.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: We know, everyone around here knows the Mike Leach philosophy, right?
- 32:00[SPEAKER_01]: That I don't have to hand the ball to the running back for it to be a rushing play.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_01]: If I throw it out to the flats and we're trying to attack the perimeter, I'm going to be interested to see how quickly it has been our buckle pivot to that.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_01]: If they run in games, not working and can that be something that can loosen stuff up for the traditional running game, because that's just where things that he did not go to to hide for Michigan.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_00]: No, I definitely think that's gonna be another avenue that can move this OU offense against a team as good as Michigan, that front seven, obviously elite.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like we said, I think that Ben Arbuckle didn't really dive too deep into his bag of tricks against Illinois State.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_00]: That's a game, even though it started slow.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_00]: It would have taken something catastrophic for OU to lose the Illinois State, so he really didn't have to die that deep.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't really have to go to these screen passes, these motions, anything on the outside.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_00]: It was pretty vanilla, and I think that was for a reason, don't want to reveal too much against, I mean, before planning a team like Michigan, so I think that they're going to be able to open that up a little bit, get D on Berks, Isaiah Centanias, you said on the outside, get them both involved.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_00]: kind of in different ways than they were obviously burks had some downfield shots against Illinois State.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_00]: So, Tanya, you saw him more on the return game than you did in the offense.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think both of those guys as speed, that's going to be huge against Michigan, and hopefully for a use sake, open things up for the backs.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_01]: I will be interested to something that you just touched on, whove and both Ben Arbuckle and Britt Venables were asked about Kevin Wilson.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: And now that we saw a game day, what that actually looks like on a sideline, Kevin Wilson all over the place.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_01]: If you miss that head either to Hoops YouTube page, John Hoover Media, we have both the Ben Arbuckle and Britt Venables Press Conference.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_01]: You can hit us up Oklahoma Sooner's on SI.com.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_01]: First off, who what was your mental image when Ben Arbuckle was talking about Kevin Wilson coming over me like, good call, given him a fist pump.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_01]: Secondly, for a guy that spent a long time in Vienna and Ohio State, I do think he's going to be a huge resource to whether Ben R. Buckle's asking for his input or whether he's saying like, hey, so when we played in Indiana, we were just athletically outmatched and you can't use this play, but we tweaked it in Ohio State and with our athletes, this is what I'm curious what kind of impact he's going to have because going up against Wink Martendale is probably the biggest
- 34:21[SPEAKER_01]: like experience mismatch you can have when you talked about been our buckle very start of his career week martendale well on into a very very illustrious NFL college defensive coordinator career
- 34:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah Kevin thinks outside the box as a coach and as a coordinator and I've made this point before but I'll illustrate it again in 2007 they lit the world on fire right statistically Sam Bradford first year starting to mark a Murray, all those receivers they had.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_02]: Kevin comes out in 2008 and says, what if we take all these NFL guys, your main aggression, Trent Williams, Sam Bradford, what if we take all these NFL guys?
- 34:57[SPEAKER_02]: and we run that West Coast offense, that hurry up, that no huddle offense.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_02]: And everybody's like with a bunch of pros, that's never been done before.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_02]: Because it's a gimmick offense.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_02]: That's what I'm saying.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_02]: Kevin takes two different, two disparate pieces and fits them together and breaks every record offensive record there ever was in college football.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_02]: So, Ben Horbuckle,
- 35:26[SPEAKER_02]: he's only gonna be made better the more he's around Kevin Wilson because of that whole thing of you know hope he's he's walking he's listening to the to the coaches upstairs Kusie asked you or whoever jet Joe John Finley's listening to the maybe getting feedback from Mattier and he looks up at Kevin Wilson Kevin Wilson's staying there going
- 35:44[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's reinforces, right?
- 35:46[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, my gosh, Kevin Wilson is one of the most accomplished assistant coaches going right now.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks that I did a good job.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_02]: I'm reinforced, but and I'm going to do, I'm going to continue to do what I've been doing.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, it's, it's, it's so far so good.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_02]: One game, FCS opponent, everybody slow down, but so far so good.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder too that the comparisons have been made over and over again from Lincoln to Ben Arbuckle determinists and all that stuff.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_01]: I think if you go back to early, early, early Lincoln days that game against Houston down in our G where Lincoln just totally abandoned the run in the second half with Joe Nixon and Smosh A P-Rine and got
- 36:25[SPEAKER_01]: went back to his air raid routes truly and part of the lesson of that was Bob Stoops basically saying yeah I got to tell him to run the freaking ball things like that.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think that Brett Minimal has great trusting Kevin Wilson to walk over whether Ben Arbuckle who's the little bit different is trying too hard to establish studies like hey man let's throw some passes and loosen this thing up or get into a different look or going back the other way not saying that Ben's going to be in that spot but maybe I don't know you look at it.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_01]: Two years ago, he coached against a top 15 Oregon, and the last game of the year was a Cam Ward, a Michael Pinnick spad on the Apple Cup with basically a Washington team trying to work their way into the playoffs.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_01]: So he's had a top five caliber team on the opposite sideline, but he's never had the bread in the circus that comes along with Oklahoma and Michigan prime time, week two, all that fun stuff.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_01]: The mission to see from the passing game boys, Deon Berks, you know, Carlstein talked about a little bit in the post game podcast, but he was he felt good getting into the end zone for the first time in a bit, but when when you look at it, it feels like Carlstein, if you're gonna attack somewhere in this Michigan defense,
- 37:32[SPEAKER_01]: First step, you're gonna have to give a job and see your enough time, but the question marks, these debits is kind of reminded me of each other.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_01]: The question marks for Michigan right now are, haven't you replaced some guys at corner?
- 37:44[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think that Kianthez Lewis showed you enough and Dianne Berks in Statenia to test Michigan vertically?
- 37:50[SPEAKER_01]: Because otherwise, you're looking at that live-backing court if it's a line going, yep, that's enough, though, guys.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: They good.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, this is definitely a challenge and it's going to prove more than last week did, but overall from what I saw against the red birds.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_00]: The answer is yes, I think they will be able to test Michigan down field.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think Lewis could be the real deal.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_00]: I know we had a bunch of questions.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_00]: How is Southern Illinois?
- 38:13[SPEAKER_00]: A good season there.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: How is that going to translate to a good season that will you?
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: He did it.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_00]: It didn't look like that's going to be much of an issue from his first game to touch downs 119 yards obviously.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: And then Satania, we didn't see as much of him in the offense, but his speed speed matters down to track coach.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_00]: He knows what it takes to burn people.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I think he's going to be used more.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to be a downfield threat.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, I don't think we're going to see Giovanni Gibson this game, but when we do get to see him, I think he's going to be another threat.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think if there's one big thing that really exceeded expectations for me at least in week one, it was the passing game and how these receivers, most of them new, played, it looks like they're going to be able to be versatile with what they have between the receivers and tight ends.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that I think it's going to continue against even a good defense like Michigan.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_02]: Brits said something on his coach's show Monday night that caught my attention and he said the analytics wise he said if you've got a pot returner that if you can get a first down on your pot return in other words if you can average 10 yards you're taking that's that's a first down and four downs or three downs and 10 yards you're taking away from the the offense having to do that right and you average that out over the course of a game
- 39:26[SPEAKER_02]: talking about three or four potter turns over the course of a game, offsetting your winning the field position, what he said in a one possession league like the SEC.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_02]: So it is huge, huge, that Isaiah satang it is the guy that he is.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he had 100 average, like 12 yards per potter turn, 2023 at Arkansas had a long touchdown, 500 yards kickoff return so he can do that if he's needed.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_02]: This is a guy, you mentioned his dad,
- 39:54[SPEAKER_02]: Carson, his dad, a track coach.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_02]: His dad is an NCAA champion and an SEC champion and an LSU all-time record holder in the decathlon.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_02]: Might be the best athlete of anybody in the family on the team, anywhere.
- 40:10[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the guy's unbelievable.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_02]: And then his mom ran in the 1992 Olympics.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_02]: So he's got speed that nobody else has, Satan you does.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_02]: He's also got that little jitter bug, but he's thick enough, 511, 182 pounds, 185, where he can break those first arm tacos, you know, got coming down, you jitter bug him a little bit, he gets a arm on you, no, that's not enough.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_02]: So he's a guy that if he's right now averaging almost 16 yards per punt return.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_02]: Marvin Mim's average 16 yards per punt return in 2022, Prince first season, he all had 10 punt returns.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so the team's already got four on the season.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_02]: So he's going to be one of those guys.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_02]: CD had 24 pot returns, average, like 13 yards per return in 2018.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_02]: Dv Westbrook only had five returns in 2016.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_02]: So you're looking at somebody volume wise, like maybe a Jalen Saunders, who had 20 returns in 2013 and average 15 yards or Ryan Broils.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_02]: 16 yards on 31 p.m.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_02]: back in 2009.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_02]: If he can contribute that kind of efficiency to the special teams, Satania, on an average basis, then have to be spectacular at a time.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_02]: You don't have to have a 60 yard called back 60 yard return called back by a silly, holding penalty or blocking the back penalty, like what happened the other day.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_02]: But if he can do that a couple of times three times four times a year,
- 41:32[SPEAKER_02]: Then I'll send the offense and Ben Arbuckle, you know, you're looking at starting a possession at the 21 yard line instead of the the other teams 20 right if so it's just huge it's just absolutely huge and Brent said if you get that extra first down per return if you get that extra 10 yards per average he said you're it is analytic was you're in the top 15.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know if that meant top 15 of average starting field position or average top 15 of like average poverty or top 15 and like the coaches pull, right?
- 42:02[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what exactly what that means, but it sounds good.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_02]: Top 15 is where you want to be.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, we shoot for Top 10 in the state.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_01]: Don't know if you've heard.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_01]: Um, uh, it's what, was it, uh, was it Bill Parcell so it always basically said in the NFL?
- 42:15[SPEAKER_01]: He just, his short hand was 100 total yards should be seven points on the board.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_01]: So, I don't know if it was Parcells or somebody else.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it was Bellachak that was always repeating it.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_01]: So if you can get two big returns and get to like 40, 50 yards then there you go.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_01]: There's three and a half points on the board there.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_01]: make that make sense on the math side of things, especially when you compare it to my big takeaway from Michigan week one, they had they popped a couple of big runs which which helped their average and you don't take out the big runs when that happens, that's what the benefit is getting at, but
- 42:47[SPEAKER_01]: Had a fumble on a kick off had a fumble on a punt return their week when jitter looks like they manifest in some special teams issues So if Oklahoma is getting plus return yardage and and maybe it can make something happen on the other side of life When it comes to that then we will see if you want to dive more into Satay the end of the punt returns and everything that who took out of that that story is up Oklahoma sooners on s i dot con just
- 43:09[SPEAKER_01]: Hit the football tab, click on that bad boy.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_01]: Don't have to type anything in.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's always free.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_01]: We have no pay while I was in here that fun stuff here at Oklahoma Sooner's on SI.com.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_01]: Let's move on to the other side.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_01]: Bryce Underwood, true freshman coming in.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_01]: Similar but different to when Nico and Tennessee rolled in last year, Nico had been on sidelines before as a red shirt.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_01]: But he had a couple of success early.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_01]: He had what you would expect from a talented Redshirt freshman, right?
- 43:35[SPEAKER_01]: A couple of big shots down the field, but crucially the two turnovers that for a normal football team would have been absolute gold for the 2024 sooner's that just meant that two extra obtudies for Jackson Arnold to fumble the football.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_01]: Bryce Sunderwood did not have that kind of issue in game one.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_01]: He's obviously going to see a much different defense in Oklahoma than what New Mexico threw out there.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: Carson, I'm just fascinated to see that this is what you talk about when Brett Venibals getting to scheme up a defense to try and confuse a true freshman and with how versatile that thing looked, especially with Kindle Daydials and some of the pieces they have at defensive end that can either slide in and give you a a bunch of different look up front or all the different personnel groupings.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited to see what the Venibals pre-snap versus post-snap formula is going to
- 44:29[SPEAKER_00]: Just like we talked about Ben Arbuckle not pulling out of all the tricks out in week one, I don't think Michigan really did in week one either with Bryce Underwood first game of his college career.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_00]: He's a runner and I think he I think he log negative five yards on the ground in this first game.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_00]: So he wasn't used to hold on the ground against New Mexico.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think that changes with his speed playing against a defense as good as OUs.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: It kind of has to change.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_00]: They have to find other ways because there might be some downfield shots here.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_00]: They may be able to pick some good yards up through the air.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: But he's going to have to run just his hands.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously they're running back.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_00]: big throughout 159 yards and three touchdowns against New Mexico.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_00]: So they're going to be able to attack on you in a lot of different ways.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_00]: If the sooner it's already able to shut down one thing, they can always turn to something else.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they have playmakers up and down their offense.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_00]: So I think we're going to see, I feel the same way I could just set about both teams that they didn't necessarily pull out all their tricks.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to look a lot different for both teams in week two.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_02]: Ryan, he's six foot four, he's 230 pounds.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_02]: As a true freshman quarterback, he looks like Vince Young.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_02]: But he passes like Tom Freakin' Brady.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_02]: Tom Brady for Michigan Wolverine, I'm 251 yards passing in your college debut.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_02]: I know not a great opponent, but still 251 yards passing 68% completion.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_02]: That's damn impressive for a freshman to come out there and do that.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_02]: They probably had everything scripted for him.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_02]: Nice and safe.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_02]: If you see this coverage through all on that side, I get that.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_02]: But that kid looked poised.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_02]: He looks like the next big thing.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_02]: He looks like the number one overall recruit in college football, right?
- 46:07[SPEAKER_02]: He does.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_02]: He looks like the next big thing in college football.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma's going to have to confuse him.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to have to pressure him.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_02]: And that D-line, those guys, they got some good push, but they missed some opportunities last week against Illinois State.
- 46:20[SPEAKER_02]: They can't miss those opportunities this time, or Bryce under will make them pay.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: Brett Vittables compared Bryce Sunderwood to Trevor Lawrence.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe not exactly in like, how they play, but just remember, Brett Vittables was the DC for that Trevor Lawrence team.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: He came in as a true freshman.
- 46:34[SPEAKER_01]: He talked about an early season game against Texas A&M where like, that was more about what can the experience guys around Trevor Lawrence do to put him in good spots for him to take those one or two shots and be the top rank type of player.
- 46:48[SPEAKER_01]: He's like toward the end of the year, once they're in a national championship game, it's Alabama.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_01]: Lawrence is doing a lot more, but early it takes everybody and I think one of the big guys to watch here for Michigan it'll be Marling Klein, the Titan.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_01]: I know that they've had this factory of not just the fits a lot, but Titans as well.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_01]: Six catches for 93 yards in a touchdown in the opener against du Mexico for Klein and this is where the
- 47:12[SPEAKER_01]: It is much as we're excited for this Oklahoma defensive line, and they were talking about it in week 1.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_01]: To me, gentlemen, this is going to be like the Kindle Daniel show on defense.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_01]: Why do you go out and get a 6 for Cheetah that's played safety and linebacker well so that he can step up and hit justice hands.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_01]: and so that he can drop back and try to cover a guy like Wall and Clay, he's not going to be dropping back on him on every single snap and all that stuff, but this to me, John, it's like the big show me a lot.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of proof it on this Oklahoma team, I think, for everybody in 2025, for Kindle Daniels after the low-sleddy put on tape at Oklahoma State, the easiest way to wipe all that away immediately is to have a really, really nice outing against a really big
- 48:00[SPEAKER_02]: to say him.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_02]: Tom Brady.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_02]: No, I'm sorry.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_02]: Sorry.
- 48:07[SPEAKER_02]: Do you rail this thing completely?
- 48:09[SPEAKER_02]: No, you're right.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_02]: Um, it's, it's a prove it game for him to be able to, uh, you know, step up and make plays be that guy, right?
- 48:20[SPEAKER_02]: Be that cheetah, be that every down kind of cheetah even.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_02]: I'll have to come out for a smaller guy.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_02]: But just imagine how easy his job is going to be.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_02]: And anybody that's back there in the secondary, where there's gentry Williams or Peyton Bowen or whoever, imagine how the easy their good job is going to be if David Stone beats his man, if Jake and Jackson creates some push.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_02]: If Dominic Williams, you know, collapses the pocket with any regularity.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_02]: Michigan's got a very good offensive line.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_02]: That's going to be a very big challenge for those guys.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_02]: But Oklahoma has been touted.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_02]: It's not their fault.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_02]: They haven't been going around blowing their own horn, but they have been touted all off season as maybe the best defensive line in the SEC.
- 49:00[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe the best defensive line in the country.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_02]: Don't think for a minute that Michigan hasn't heard all of that.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_02]: Now they've got to show that, too.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_02]: Oakland was defensive line is really going to have to be the one that proves that this game.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_01]: Michigan little brother along in the run game obviously that's like their entire identity so you would assume that but they were still mixed in matching guys logging off in subline as well.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_01]: They had had Andrew Babelola their talented five star true freshman that went down during fall camp.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_01]: He was competing for a tackle job so they're a little short handed there I am very interested to see what Oklahoma's defensive line can do it's the it's
- 49:41[SPEAKER_01]: After what we saw last year, it's the first time in a couple of years that we're heading into one of these games, and I'm just like, I'm not questioning that Oklahoma's defensive lines can be able to match the physicality of Michigan.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just curious what the other side of the body, offensive lines, going to be able to do and they'll have to bottle up just as hands as well.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_01]: He's, uh,
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: had a very very phenomenal opener for Michigan as Carson mentioned and he's a guy that was in Norman a year ago for a game he got what three carries I think for 18 yards as remember the album of Crimson Todd Carson, Oklahoma didn't have any trouble doing anything against the run game that night's area would get out ahead and play with a lead.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's been outside of that game.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's been a hot
- 50:18[SPEAKER_01]: minutes since we saw Oklahoma be able to play with the lead and I think you saw like that's what the potential the defense is.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_01]: If I was able to get out early and tee off on Bryce under what his talent it is he is that that changes things drastically from where this defense was a lot last year which was chasing games and just having to buy time and hope the offense could do anything.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Oklahoma's best case scenario for the defense is making Michigan one dimensional.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, they are, they're a very good running team.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_00]: Justice Haynes, Bryce, Underwood, Dual Threat Capabilities, they're still going to get there to some degree.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_00]: Justice Haynes is not going to be totally shut down underwood probably will not either.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_00]: But if they can bottle them up enough to where really only thing they can do is run the ball.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's best case scenario because just the same is good.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_00]: But we've seen that OU's defense can control the line of scrimmage that they have a lot of talent up front.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_00]: So getting it to that situation where Michigan can only run the ball.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_00]: That would be the best outcome for OU's D.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_02]: They did Grayson, Grayson helped and only played two snaps last week.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_02]: What's his health situation?
- 51:22[SPEAKER_01]: He is, they're just rampant back in.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_01]: He is good to go.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_01]: He was out there, not with the starters initially, but he was in there early.
- 51:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't think that Oklahoma's overly concerned.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_01]: He looked, I watched him when he was in there as well.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_01]: He looked,
- 51:39[SPEAKER_01]: like Grayson Hall, he didn't like he was the laborer or anything like that.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_01]: So it should be full speed ahead.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, when you're looking up and down, the still haven't been able to find anything heads or tails on Tory Blaylock still haven't heard that Eli Bowen or Kindle Dolby's work their way out there.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: But otherwise, you get the additions on the offensive line that we've talked about earlier.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that you're looking at any other,
- 52:05[SPEAKER_01]: guys miss in time from the defense stuff like that Robert Spirits Shinnings came back and played it look like Robert Spirits Shinnings was like serving a first quarter suspension not saying he did but like the vibe he got thrown in there for the first time with 50 seconds left and then played the rest of the way.
- 52:20[SPEAKER_01]: until they started rotate everybody out there, but anyway, he came back in and was good.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_01]: I thought Michael Booghowski was nice there.
- 52:26[SPEAKER_01]: I thought Peyton Bowen was big time as far as some of the times that he had to step up and make tackles, but I can't wait to see what Portland Gallery looks like, boys, gentrary Williams.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_01]: We know that, uh,
- 52:37[SPEAKER_01]: From two years ago, he is a physical corner that was part of why his shoulder was unable to make it through the very, very start of last year with the physicality he plays at.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_01]: But I liked what I saw from Portland, Gillory, and it'll be a big test because part of why D on Varks wasn't recruited to Michigan, which we ran that story on Sunday, was at that time Jim Harbour was not interested in a under six foot speedster burner.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's not totally that cut and dry anymore from Michigan, but it is still a very, very, very large, hefty, uh, wide receiving cord at the world where it's going to be rolled with.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I'm much, let me ask you guys this.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_02]: This is off topic.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_02]: This is off the script, actually, which I tend to do, especially these days.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_02]: Um, do you love or hate Michigan's uniforms and helmets?
- 53:27[SPEAKER_01]: love the helmets, love the uniforms, love the fights on.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_01]: I, I, too.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_01]: I've never found myself like cheering for Michigan when Ohio State and Michigan play.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's one of those things.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_01]: You know how sometimes you see robberies across the country that you have nothing to do with and sometimes you just pick a side or that, that it's one robber that I always watch and have just never really cared who's what.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, go ahead Carson, give me your thoughts.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, Michigan's uniforms top tier in my opinion.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_00]: I like Ryan never really taken much of a rooting interest in Michigan.
- 53:59[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe a little bit more so when they were kind of lovable losers for before they got Jim Harball.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they were easier to root for harder to hate Connor Stallions.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, it's made them harder to like, but uniform wise.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think for me it's probably UCLA's home, that's probably top of the list, but I think Michigan's homes and the helmets are a big reason why that might be my number two.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_02]: So I grew up in the 70s exposed to my NFL team.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_02]: We didn't get a ton of NFL in the 70s in North Pole, Alaska, but the teams that we did, we got a lot of Los Angeles rams.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_02]: And so when I saw Michigan play for the first time, I was like, it's the Los Angeles rams of college football.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_02]: I like this team.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_02]: I like those helmets.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_02]: I love those colors.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_02]: I like the combinations.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_02]: You can see all my rams stuff probably back here somewhere.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so that's just, I mean, when I see that helmet go out there on the field, I'm just like, holy cow.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_02]: I want to petition both teams to this is this is our week right now.
- 54:57[SPEAKER_02]: Both equipment managers, you're listening to the podcast.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_02]: You're given, you're taking feedback.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_02]: Here we go.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_02]: It's an NFL color rush Saturday in Norman Oklahoma.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_02]: You wear your home team colors.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_02]: They wear their home team colors.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody gets confused because they're not wearing white.
- 55:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's red, it's blue, it's crimson, it's maze, it's all that stuff.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_02]: I want to see some throw down with the color splash, the NFL color, what's the color splash color flash color rush?
- 55:22[SPEAKER_02]: Color rush, that's it, that's what I want to see.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_01]: Color Rush Thursdays.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_01]: If they were like a pole game maybe I actually I love the Michigan road uniforms.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know like it's not like the blue and you know that stuff But I love the helmet with the why and all the accents and stuff like that and knowing that we're gonna get
- 55:41[SPEAKER_01]: the proper home road split this year and next year and get to flip it around all that stuff.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_01]: I know I've seen a lot of people campaigning for that we should have both home jerseys.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm kind of dig the Michigan Road uniforms, too.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I want to see them, the USC UCLA games when they do the both teams have the home team.
- 56:00[SPEAKER_02]: They're both in LA, right?
- 56:01[SPEAKER_02]: They both were there, there was a scarlet, now scarlet's so hot state, what do they wear?
- 56:07[SPEAKER_02]: Garne.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_02]: Garden and gold and UCLA's powder blues.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_02]: I love those so much This will actually be the second Michigan game I've ever covered my my all my history lessons have reminded me Oh, yeah, you've already covered it a Michigan game before the 1999 Florida Citrus Bowl when I was covering the Razerbacks.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_02]: Guess who was quarterbacking?
- 56:29[SPEAKER_02]: Tom Freakin Brady
- 56:32[SPEAKER_01]: Tom Brady, he's represented on the podcast.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_01]: Raiders legend, Tom Brady.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_01]: We've always seen him.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_02]: Of course he came back and beat the Razorbacks.
- 56:38[SPEAKER_02]: They were down like seven and he comes back and throws two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, you son of a, whatever, it's, I think a lot of people have that reaction to Tom Brady still.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_01]: We're growing, when he pops on Fox, like, what's putting lifelong ramps family, knock me out of the Super Bowl twice.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I think Oklahoma fans are living a blessed life this year between Michigan and whether you want to admit it or not, Oklahoma is in that hierarchy of iconic college football fight songs as his Texas, you're going to get the boomer sooner rocky top just battle back and forth.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_01]: This is a good fight song schedule for Oklahoma.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_01]: Love it.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's a great fight song.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: Please, please, that was like the highlight of last year.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: We covered a bad football team.
- 57:30[SPEAKER_01]: It should be a ton of fun.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_01]: We'll save all of our game predictions, all that fun stuff, per usual, Friday morning, Ish, mid morning, Oakland Sooner's on Si.com.

- 57:46[SPEAKER_01]: We'll also have a little bit of a,
- 57:49[SPEAKER_01]: An announcement, a site announcement that will be coming at some point Saturday morning, probably.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_01]: So keep your eyes and ears out and about for all of that.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_01]: For all of our content, you just hit us up on Twitter at Sooner's on SI.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_01]: You can follow John at John E Hoover.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm at underscore Ryan Chapman Carson's at Carson Dfield.
- 58:06[SPEAKER_01]: Find us on Facebook, Oklahoma Sooner's on SI.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_01]: All that fun stuff.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_01]: That is the place to be for all of your OU Michigan happenings.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to take a quick step outside of specifically Oklahoma and Michigan State in the football world.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_01]: Though Tuesday night, Oklahoma did pick up finally a recruit from the state of Oklahoma in the
- 58:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so sorry Xavier Zeezy as they call them over at rejoice Christian that hand up it's bad.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_01]: I'm working on it.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm trying.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_01]: I have the actual pronunciation guy and I still screwed it up.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_01]: Not good there.
- 58:47[SPEAKER_01]: The wider receiver commits six five almost 200 a guy that
- 58:52[SPEAKER_01]: started out in basketball, kind of a late arrival to the football side of things and this was pretty straightforward for Oklahoma.
- 58:59[SPEAKER_01]: He came was in the house in Norman on Saturday.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's the official offer.
- 59:05[SPEAKER_01]: At least reports out there or tweets out there that he got the official offer from Emmett Jones on Monday night.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_01]: And by Tuesday at six o'clock, he's in the class.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think that Carson is you and I play a lot of EA college football.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_01]: That is what we like to see when you see the week one, offer scholarship.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: He says, yes, don't go to worry about the
- 59:22[SPEAKER_01]: the way.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's definitely a good sign, especially we've talked about, oh, use Miss Doubt on Summer Seabers earlier in the recruiting trail, but now giving him giving Daniel Odom looks like they're making some ground as far as receivers go and kind of picking up football late.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_00]: That's probably why.
- 59:39[SPEAKER_00]: He's only a three star, not the highly most highly touted prospect, but I mean you mentioned that size, obviously I would use not going to offer that someone they think's not good enough to play.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to love the raw potential that somebody with that size has, especially a local kid.
- 59:55[SPEAKER_00]: That's big too, just getting a lot of people, some people have just been saying, oh, they're not recruiting the end-state kids, they're not winning the end-state kids, showing that they still are getting some of the bigger priority guys in the state.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_00]: That's big.
- 1:00:07[SPEAKER_00]: Much needed for OU's 2026 class.
- 1:00:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, suck in hardball.
- 1:00:13[SPEAKER_01]: make that happen.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_01]: They're now up to a 20 in the 24 seven sports team rankings with the addition of Xavier or Zeezy as they call him.
- 1:00:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he is the tools are there.
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's just going to be about continuing to fill up that frame and continuing to play more and more football obviously is just for reference.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_02]: I love Jim Harba.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_02]: I won't you all know that.
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_02]: Michigan, because he wore that wing helmet, loved him when he was at the Bears, because he followed Jim McMahon and Mike Dick and basically used to take Harbal off the field, grabbing like there's a punch him in the stomach, he hated him so much.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_02]: loved him with the cults, except for when he came to Kansas City and knocked the chiefs out of the playoffs, because that was going to be my year to go to the Super Bowl.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_02]: I was covering the chiefs.
- 1:00:59[SPEAKER_02]: And then loved him when he was with Stanford, and they played OU in the Sunball.
- 1:01:03[SPEAKER_02]: He was super professional.
- 1:01:04[SPEAKER_02]: We had several press conferences, and he was hanging out with us, and talking, telling stories.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_02]: It was awesome.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_02]: So, love me some Jim Harbub, but stop hating on short receivers.
- 1:01:13[SPEAKER_02]: Was that, uh, Andrew Luck and Toby Gerhardt in the Sunball?
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_02]: Andrew Luck was injured, however, to beat the preacher and it up being the quarterback and, uh, oh, you, that's the first time a coach that I've covered has ever grabbed me, um, on the field after the game and picked me up with a big hug.
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_02]: It was none other than Brett Venables.
- 1:01:33[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that was that 2009 was fantastic in 2009, and they kicked the crap out of poor Stanford that day.
- 1:01:40[SPEAKER_02]: Well, they ended up winning, but they really shut them down defensively.
- 1:01:44[SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, Jim, Jim, Valvano, he's looking for somebody to hug.
- 1:01:48[SPEAKER_02]: And there's over, it picks me up and drops me and it's like, what just happened?
- 1:01:52[SPEAKER_01]: The entries were the name of the game in that sunbook.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_01]: Cause that was the 2009 Oklahoma team that got zero players held lead to the finish line.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_01]: Luson guys in the bulk game.
- 1:02:02[SPEAKER_02]: Still, I think those guys get drafted in the first round when they were all injured that year.
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_02]: Amazing.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_01]: We'll find out with Nick Anderson, I guess, if he's going to try and do it, wait a minute, never mind.
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, elsewhere, the fall softball schedule did drop on Wednesday morning.
- 1:02:17[SPEAKER_01]: Oaklandsters on the side.com, hit it up there, they've got five intersquads, scribbages.
- 1:02:21[SPEAKER_01]: One, again, we can get to Oklahoma Christian.
- 1:02:23[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to head to East Texas A&M.
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_01]: Again, football tickets, $10 per game, they're on sale.
- 1:02:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think starting today, per the release, they're running a, if you buy a full fall pass, it's $50 instead of $60 for the six things.
- 1:02:40[SPEAKER_01]: And here's the important thing.
- 1:02:41[SPEAKER_01]: It does not appear at this moment.
- 1:02:44[SPEAKER_01]: They announced in there, there are not plans to stream the fall ball scrimmages on, uh,
- 1:02:50[SPEAKER_01]: ESP and plus all that fun stuff.
- 1:02:51[SPEAKER_01]: So if you want to see your first look at the 2025 fall softball sooners, there's two ways to do it.
- 1:02:59[SPEAKER_01]: Go to the game or follow so come sooners on the side.com because Mike sleep schedule me down.
- 1:03:04[SPEAKER_01]: They'll be there for all of those.
- 1:03:05[SPEAKER_01]: And those are freaking marathons because Patty put some through the ringer.
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_01]: I will leave it like 11 a 11 p.m.
- 1:03:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be miserable and radio the next day.
- 1:03:12[SPEAKER_01]: Carson will text to them be like, why is Ryan so mean all the time?
- 1:03:16[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, well, I don't sleep.
- 1:03:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's
- 1:03:18[SPEAKER_02]: But Oklahoma just become the first school in history to do a like a softball blackout is that what we just, is that what you just said?
- 1:03:26[SPEAKER_02]: I, uh, it's not gonna be carried locally at this point.
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_01]: So they may, they may feel the pressure of the world, they may make that.
- 1:03:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, PN might come to town with a checkbook and say, how much do you want to broadcast your, uh, your fall games and, and oh, you would say,
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_02]: No problem.
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_01]: We will see.
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_01]: But like I said, Welcome to series on senate.com.
- 1:03:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to rally through all the dates.
- 1:03:50[SPEAKER_01]: All the home games are at 630.
- 1:03:52[SPEAKER_01]: Go find the dates in the story.
- 1:03:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's up there for you.
- 1:03:56[SPEAKER_01]: Gentlemen, we got game day coming to town, which will be very, very exciting.
- 1:04:00[SPEAKER_01]: Do we have any major overreactions from week one?
- 1:04:03[SPEAKER_01]: I have enjoyed that heading into week two.
- 1:04:06[SPEAKER_01]: We did have a little war of words that I think was blown out of proportion on all fronts for Mike
- 1:04:14[SPEAKER_01]: heading into that Oklahoma State Oregon game is Mike Gunney just said like, they spend a lot of money.
- 1:04:19[SPEAKER_01]: I did like Dan Landing basically saying like, I'm sure that you guys did not get paid or have put a little bit more into your roster than UT Martin though, so maybe check yourself when suggesting that you should just only play the teams that are in your tax bracket.
- 1:04:32[SPEAKER_02]: I know it's 2025, but OSU and Mike Gunney should be the last people saying,
- 1:04:40[SPEAKER_02]: talking about other people's spending habits and budget.
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he had the program, the stadium, one of the nicest stadiums in America, gift wrapped to him by Boonpick.
- 1:04:49[SPEAKER_02]: And so kind of hard to to bark up that tree from my gun to eat.
- 1:04:52[SPEAKER_02]: The one I'm interested in is Brian Kelly versus Davo.
- 1:04:55[SPEAKER_02]: Holy cow, how much fun is that?
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's speaking of stepping a little out of proportion.
- 1:04:59[SPEAKER_01]: I thought, in look, you guys know, I do not stay up on a table to defend Davo's swinging.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's not what happens here.
- 1:05:07[SPEAKER_01]: But I thought that Dabo basically said like, LSU is really good, they're going places, but neither of us played our best game.
- 1:05:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's a press conference that we've had with Patty Gaso, previewing OU UCLA, like at the Mary Nutter, where she's like, listen, this is not gonna be a world series caliber game, but we're excited to play it.
- 1:05:26[SPEAKER_01]: I thought Dabo was basically like, that wasn't a cause while Plap Calver game.
- 1:05:30[SPEAKER_01]: If you circle back in 10 weeks, both of us will be a lot, but I didn't think that Dabo said like,
- 1:05:35[SPEAKER_01]: We should have won.
- 1:05:36[SPEAKER_01]: We were so I just thought he was just like, I'm not super worried about it.
- 1:05:39[SPEAKER_01]: Congrats to them.
- 1:05:40[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we'll see him on down the line.
- 1:05:41[SPEAKER_01]: And Brian Kelly, who apparently does his Monday press conference in a suit.
- 1:05:44[SPEAKER_01]: I learned that today as well, was meant to like, screw you, dabble, sweetie.
- 1:05:48[SPEAKER_01]: You grade socks.
- 1:05:50[SPEAKER_01]: You're grade socks.
- 1:05:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like who see the great us as a 70 or 61 and he gives himself a 58 did he not watch the game?
- 1:05:58[SPEAKER_02]: We saw him and I'm like, you guys need to get a ring and settle this.
- 1:06:03[SPEAKER_01]: that a dabba was not reading out like we graded out of the 50 it he was just anyway that listen go for it pop off I guess I thought should be some interesting games as far as tracking Oklahoma's future schedule this week and fascinated by Candison Missouri see what that thing looks like is both those team step on to the field against like a real football team sorry to our friends at Fresno State and Central Arkansas
- 1:06:28[SPEAKER_01]: yet little sneak peek at Ole Miss I mean they they ran up and down the field on Saturday but I'm not saying Kentucky's supposed to be any good but that's at least an SEC game for Ole Miss which is a that's the team that I know like the least about as far as expectations because they replace so much but
- 1:06:45[SPEAKER_01]: Should be interested in some of those games play out in the night.
- 1:06:47[SPEAKER_01]: I guess elsewhere.
- 1:06:48[SPEAKER_01]: We'll have like Baylor and S.M.U some fun stuff, but some nice little regional tidbits otherwise though That's why Oklahoma and Michigan's getting all the fanfare all across the four litter networks.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_01]: Number one game of the week.
- 1:07:01[SPEAKER_01]: should be good.
- 1:07:02[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be there.
- 1:07:03[SPEAKER_01]: The three of us, you should be there too.
- 1:07:05[SPEAKER_01]: Or if you're not there, be sure you follow us on uside.com.
- 1:07:09[SPEAKER_01]: We'll have our live blog up all throughout the game.
- 1:07:12[SPEAKER_01]: Anything that happens pre game post game during the game, it will be at Oakalmasoonersonthsi.com.
- 1:07:18[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be burning the midnight oil turning out stories from the press box and then
- 1:07:22[SPEAKER_01]: The return of the three-man post-game podcasts, who, Carson and myself will be both wrapped up the game on the field and in the press box at probably two in the morning.
- 1:07:33[SPEAKER_01]: So that's why you always got a tune in there.
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_01]: You don't know what you're going to get because we are all tired at that point, but looking forward to recapping.
- 1:07:40[SPEAKER_01]: And Michigan, if that's all we got, you know what I just thought of, don't you?
- 1:07:45[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, what?
- 1:07:46[SPEAKER_01]: Good.
- 1:07:46[SPEAKER_01]: Disease sandwich.
- 1:07:48[SPEAKER_01]: Ah, the throwback.
- 1:07:49[SPEAKER_01]: That predates.
- 1:07:50[SPEAKER_01]: That predates Randall.
- 1:07:52[SPEAKER_01]: That's a, that's when Josh Coway accused me of eating a disease sandwich, you know what?
- 1:07:57[SPEAKER_01]: It was good.
- 1:07:57[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you to Jimmy John's.
- 1:07:59[SPEAKER_01]: 10 hours after.
- 1:08:00[SPEAKER_01]: Alright, that's all the damage we can do now.
- 1:08:02[SPEAKER_01]: Be sure to head into the side all the places you know and we will be back recapping either a massive win or we will be freaking out.
- 1:08:10[SPEAKER_01]: Now we'll just recap everything that happens with Oklahoma and Michigan Saturday.
- 1:08:15[SPEAKER_01]: Back for Carson Borho, I'm Ryan Chad, we will talk to you guys this weekend.
