- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome into Jag's AM.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I'm Kainani Stephens. Brian Sexton and John Ogier are with
- 0:19Speaker 2: me today as the Jaguars have come out of their
- 0:21Speaker 2: bye week. They're back in the building getting prepared to
- 0:24Speaker 2: take on the Colts in week eight. Let's get into
- 0:26Speaker 2: our big things today, brought to you by GEHA, Government
- 0:29Speaker 2: Employees Health Association. Now, the Jaguars coming off the bye
- 0:33Speaker 2: week are getting into a self-scout. They got to go back,
- 0:36Speaker 2: look at some of the things that they've done, and
- 0:37Speaker 2: Liam Cohen talked about what he saw when he looked
- 0:39Speaker 2: back at the tape.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Yeah, penalties, specifically in the red area. have been a
- 0:47Speaker 3: little bit of an issue on offense. You know, defensively,
- 0:51Speaker 3: too many explosives in the pass game. And then on
- 0:54Speaker 3: special teams, we've got to perform better on punt return
- 0:58Speaker 3: and kickoff coverage specifically.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Brian, no surprise penalties was the first thing you said.
- 1:04Speaker 2: But other than that, they do want to limit those explosives,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and they're just looking back. But overall, I mean, I'm
- 1:09Speaker 2: sure they gave themselves a pretty good grade because they
- 1:11Speaker 2: are 4-2, and when you take a step back, it's
- 1:13Speaker 2: a good spot to be.
- 1:13Speaker 4: 4-2 and not far off in the other two ballgames.
- 1:16Speaker 4: I mean, you could make the argument that this is
- 1:18Speaker 4: a team that if they played better on two particular Sundays,
- 1:20Speaker 4: maybe caught a couple of balls, could be a 6-0
- 1:23Speaker 4: team or at least 5-1. So there's not a lot
- 1:26Speaker 4: to not like, but there's plenty that you could want
- 1:28Speaker 4: to tighten up. The explosives we talked about on Monday.
- 1:31Speaker 4: And that is something that this team has given up
- 1:33Speaker 4: way too much on defense. And they've lived on their
- 1:36Speaker 4: red zone defense, which is in the top five. It's great.
- 1:39Speaker 4: And takeaways. And they're one of the best teams in
- 1:41Speaker 4: the league in takeaways. But you can't necessarily count on
- 1:44Speaker 4: those always being a factor. So the one self-scout thing
- 1:47Speaker 4: that I still hammer at is they've got to find
- 1:49Speaker 4: a way, whether it's up front or whether it's better
- 1:51Speaker 4: scheme and execution and coverage. They've got to find a
- 1:55Speaker 4: way to limit teams throwing the ball down the field
- 1:57Speaker 4: on them.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah. My guess is they probably found a little more
- 2:02Speaker 1: than what Liam was giving up publicly. I expect there
- 2:08Speaker 1: were details. I expect there were things they found of, oh,
- 2:11Speaker 1: this player is doing this particularly well. Let's lean into
- 2:14Speaker 1: that a little more. This play is working. He's not
- 2:18Speaker 1: going to get into that on a Zoom call. But remember,
- 2:21Speaker 1: this team last year, four and three out of the bye,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and I think it was nine out of ten wins
- 2:26Speaker 1: after that. they were exceptionally good. And I think it
- 2:31Speaker 1: was after the bye where their points, I think it
- 2:35Speaker 1: was 23 points, was the fewest they scored after the bye.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So they figured out what they did well and leaned
- 2:40Speaker 1: into that. I kind of think we might see the
- 2:45Speaker 1: same sort of acceleration offensively, particularly in the run game,
- 2:48Speaker 1: because my guess is they found things that worked and
- 2:53Speaker 1: are shedding some things that didn't. I expect this team
- 2:56Speaker 1: to get better after the bye.
- 2:57Speaker 4: You know, one other thing, Kai, to consider when it
- 2:58Speaker 4: comes to a self-scout is just to be self-aware of
- 3:01Speaker 4: what's going on around you. You have a two-and-a-half game
- 3:03Speaker 4: lead in the AFC South with a chance to make
- 3:06Speaker 4: that three on Sunday and to understand the circumstances and
- 3:09Speaker 4: dynamics that you have leverage with. That would be a
- 3:13Speaker 4: way to self-scout also to make sure that your team
- 3:16Speaker 4: knows where they're at.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Or second big thing, which is window, because looking around
- 3:20Speaker 2: the league and seeing that the team's at four and
- 3:22Speaker 2: two right now, it feels like the window is right now, John.
- 3:25Speaker 2: And we don't know if there'll be buyers or sellers
- 3:27Speaker 2: at the trade deadline, but it feels like this is
- 3:29Speaker 2: an opportunity for the Jaguars to really put themselves into
- 3:32Speaker 2: championship mix. Not that they weren't before, but really taking
- 3:35Speaker 2: advantage of this time.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think this team's window is as
- 3:40Speaker 1: long as Trevor Lawrence is standing. I mean, it's... I
- 3:45Speaker 1: would expect them to always be buyers in concept at
- 3:52Speaker 1: the trade deadline for the foreseeable future. I know that
- 3:55Speaker 1: could change. I'm not sure about BTJ. That's a different
- 3:58Speaker 1: sort of circumstance. But in terms of them trying to
- 4:01Speaker 1: figure out how do we get better, how do we push, yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 1: I think the window is now. I think they'll be
- 4:07Speaker 1: buyers if they can. It's a matter of what people
- 4:11Speaker 1: are selling, too, and what the cost is. But will
- 4:14Speaker 1: they be aggressive the next couple weeks? I think they will, Brian.
- 4:18Speaker 1: What form does aggressiveness take is probably the question we
- 4:21Speaker 1: don't know the answer to yet.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Well, and I made the case last week. Being aggressive
- 4:25Speaker 4: and have that mindset is fine, but not being silly
- 4:28Speaker 4: like the Colts were last year with the Sauce Gardener
- 4:31Speaker 4: trade that put themselves in a big hole. They won't
- 4:34Speaker 4: do that. They will listen to deals and they will
- 4:36Speaker 4: find one. if it makes sense for them. You know,
- 4:39Speaker 4: a counter-argument here on the BTJ thing is the Walker
- 4:43Speaker 4: Little situation. They could have moved him for a draft pick.
- 4:45Speaker 4: They chose not to. They understood that having a swing
- 4:49Speaker 4: tackle was valuable, and they didn't want to put themselves
- 4:52Speaker 4: in a position where they're having to move Wyatt Milam,
- 4:54Speaker 4: who hasn't really played very much, into a tackle spot
- 4:57Speaker 4: and move, perhaps, Cole Van Landen back. They want any
- 5:00Speaker 4: of that stuff. They kept Walker Little, and it turned
- 5:03Speaker 4: out they needed him. Well, you know, one injury on
- 5:05Speaker 4: offense might be all it needs for you to need
- 5:07Speaker 4: Brian Thomas Jr., and those guys are hard to find,
- 5:10Speaker 4: which is why teams are so interested in him. And
- 5:13Speaker 4: just one more thing on this. When you talk about
- 5:15Speaker 4: the window, Kai, look at the AFC. I mean, the
- 5:17Speaker 4: best teams in the AFC, Kansas City, they've got problems
- 5:20Speaker 4: on their offensive line more than most people understand, and
- 5:22Speaker 4: they're worried about their pass rush as well. Buffalo has
- 5:26Speaker 4: issues on defense. Every team out there has has issues
- 5:30Speaker 4: and limitations. There's not that one dominant team like the
- 5:33Speaker 4: Chiefs had been when they made their great run in
- 5:35Speaker 4: three Super Bowls in five years. Absolutely, the window is
- 5:38Speaker 4: wide open, and if you can get through it and
- 5:41Speaker 4: find something that works for you, then do it.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Our final big thing today is going to be bounce back.
- 5:46Speaker 2: The Jaguars lost a tight one to the Texans in
- 5:49Speaker 2: London right before the bye week, hoping to bounce back
- 5:51Speaker 2: against the Colts. But Brian, who do you want to
- 5:53Speaker 2: see a really good game out of against Indy this
- 5:56Speaker 2: week coming up?
- 5:57Speaker 4: Jari Jones, right? Jordan Lewis, two guys who had mental
- 6:02Speaker 4: errors in the ballgame in London, and those cost the
- 6:06Speaker 4: Jaguars on defense. The easy answer would be Trevor Lawrence, obviously,
- 6:09Speaker 4: because you always want to see him, or to talk
- 6:12Speaker 4: about the running game and getting it going. The truth
- 6:14Speaker 4: of the matter is the Jaguars' defense has given up explosives, yes,
- 6:18Speaker 4: but they've been good. This season, this defense has been good.
- 6:21Speaker 4: They weren't in London against the Texans. And you have
- 6:24Speaker 4: to feel like if you get more from number two
- 6:27Speaker 4: and number four when they're on the field against the Texans,
- 6:30Speaker 4: you might win the ball game. You're going to need
- 6:32Speaker 4: more from them as they go forward. Those are two
- 6:34Speaker 4: key guys. You get Monteric Brown back. But Jordan Lewis
- 6:37Speaker 4: and Jarrion Jones are two guys that the Jaguars schematically
- 6:40Speaker 4: have a lot of positional flexibility with, and they want
- 6:42Speaker 4: to make sure that those guys are playing good football.
- 6:45Speaker 4: I'd like to see more from number two and number four.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not sure this is quite fair as a
- 6:50Speaker 1: bounce back, but I think you'd like to see the
- 6:54Speaker 1: run defense be dominant, which it sort of wasn't against Houston.
- 6:59Speaker 1: They gave up a little more than they like. Houston
- 7:02Speaker 1: was able to sort of stay consistent and eventually sort
- 7:07Speaker 1: of break them with the run in the second half.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I think they'll get back to that, and again, they've
- 7:13Speaker 1: run consistently, so I You'd like to see them be
- 7:19Speaker 1: dominant on Sunday, running and stopping the run. That's the
- 7:24Speaker 1: team they want to be. It would be good for
- 7:27Speaker 1: them to come out of the bye feeling like they
- 7:30Speaker 1: want to feel in those two areas.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Stay with us here on Jags AM coming up after
- 7:34Speaker 2: the break.
- 7:34Speaker 1: We'll play a little This or That. Jags fans, this
- 7:48Speaker 1: one's for you.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Donate blood on November 14th at OneBlood's Deerwood Park Donor
- 7:52Speaker 2: Center for a chance to win Jaguars tickets and autographed prizes.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Visit OneBlood.org to learn more.
- 7:57Speaker 1: This or that. This or that.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Welcome back into Jag fam. We're going to play some
- 8:09Speaker 2: this or that. We have come back from the bye week.
- 8:12Speaker 2: We're getting back into Jaguars mode, but I was tempted.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I looked ahead on the schedule a little bit. I
- 8:17Speaker 2: know we're not supposed to look ahead and just play
- 8:19Speaker 2: week by week, but I looked ahead just to kind
- 8:21Speaker 2: of see what was coming up soon. And it's interesting
- 8:24Speaker 2: when you look at a schedule at the beginning of
- 8:26Speaker 2: the year and you're like, these are going to be
- 8:27Speaker 2: the tough games. And now when you get into the season.
- 8:29Speaker 2: it turns into something else. And I don't know if
- 8:32Speaker 2: I would have looked at the Giants early in this
- 8:33Speaker 2: year and said that's going to be a really tough matchup.
- 8:35Speaker 4: But we've got a couple coming up.
- 8:36Speaker 2: So I was just wondering, if you looked at the
- 8:38Speaker 2: schedule right now, Brad, what do you think is the
- 8:39Speaker 2: toughest game they have ahead?
- 8:41Speaker 4: That's Chicago. I think that's an afternoon game, right? It's
- 8:45Speaker 4: a 4 o'clock game. And it can feel like the
- 8:49Speaker 4: middle of January in the early part of December in Chicago.
- 8:52Speaker 4: We've all been there. And coming off the lake, you
- 8:55Speaker 4: just never know. I think that one because Caleb Williams
- 8:58Speaker 4: is getting back on the field. They expect to have
- 9:00Speaker 4: their running game back. They've had some guys banged up.
- 9:02Speaker 4: they're not a great defensive team but when you can
- 9:04Speaker 4: put up 58 points for goodness sakes your defense will
- 9:07Speaker 4: figure out a way to stop the other team and
- 9:09Speaker 4: hold them to 57 so i think that's the one
- 9:12Speaker 4: especially because ben johnson has such an attitude uh and
- 9:16Speaker 4: and wants to stick it up everybody and break it
- 9:19Speaker 4: off um i i really i think that's the toughest
- 9:22Speaker 4: game on the schedule the rest.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Of the way yeah i agree since we've already talked
- 9:27Speaker 1: about that you know um i think that is the
- 9:30Speaker 1: toughest game uh But the first two concern you because
- 9:36Speaker 1: the Ravens is going to be really important. It's in
- 9:39Speaker 1: the conference. You assume that Lamar Jackson will be back
- 9:44Speaker 1: by that point. He won't have played in a while,
- 9:47Speaker 1: so they're going to have a different dynamic offensively. They're
- 9:51Speaker 1: all really important, and the Giants all of a sudden
- 9:55Speaker 1: feels tougher because they lost Jackson Dart. Everybody wrote him off. Mm-hmm.
- 10:00Speaker 1: They're so well coached and they know how they want
- 10:03Speaker 1: to play. That always makes you dangerous as the season
- 10:05Speaker 1: goes on. I'm kind of waffling between the three. I
- 10:09Speaker 1: agree with Brian, which I hate doing, so I'm trying
- 10:10Speaker 1: to find a reason to find the others. Yes, we
- 10:12Speaker 1: need you to argue.
- 10:13Speaker 4: It's funny, though. If you go and put a score
- 10:14Speaker 4: list together, he agrees with me a whole lot more
- 10:16Speaker 4: than we know.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Yeah, but not deep down.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Not in my soul.
- 10:22Speaker 1: So for the sake of this discussion, I'll go the
- 10:26Speaker 1: Giants because they're weird and tricky. But I kind of
- 10:29Speaker 1: have a feeling they're going to get the first two.
- 10:31Speaker 1: And again, I think Brian's right. I think against Chicago,
- 10:35Speaker 1: out of conference, matchup weird because you don't know the
- 10:39Speaker 1: team that well. That's going to be a tricky matchup.
- 10:42Speaker 1: All winnable games for sure.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I just found that Giants matchup seems like so much
- 10:45Speaker 2: different than maybe I expected it to be. But Harbaugh's
- 10:47Speaker 2: gotten so much out of them so far.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Well, listen, you know what you're going to get. You're
- 10:50Speaker 4: going to get Cam Scadaboo lowering his head and challenging
- 10:53Speaker 4: your defense. And you saw what he did to the
- 10:55Speaker 4: Texans last week. And the Texans defense clearly is not
- 10:57Speaker 4: the same unit that it was last year. But they're
- 11:00Speaker 4: big inside. You figure they stopped the run, so you
- 11:02Speaker 4: know you've got your hands full.
- 11:03Speaker 1: You almost think, though, and again, I'm not discounting anything
- 11:06Speaker 1: the Giants have done because they've been very impressive. Straight
- 11:10Speaker 1: ahead power running against this defense. The Giants, I think,
- 11:15Speaker 1: will have to do something more than just scataboo against
- 11:19Speaker 1: the Jaguars the way they're constructed. Sometimes the league's about matchups.
- 11:22Speaker 1: That feels right there like a Jaguars advantage matchup. There's
- 11:26Speaker 1: other parts of the game where that won't be. But
- 11:29Speaker 1: that's a matchup that the Jaguars should be able to stop,
- 11:32Speaker 1: a pure power running game.
- 11:34Speaker 4: I agree with John.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Look at that. I love when you guys get along.
- 11:37Speaker 1: This is great. The whole thing's going on. Let's go.
- 11:41Speaker 2: We're going to go a little AFC South right now
- 11:43Speaker 2: as we broaden the picture. There have been difficult times
- 11:48Speaker 2: in Jacksonville. Obviously, they've had to rebuild before. We feel
- 11:50Speaker 2: like we're in a good spot right now. As we
- 11:53Speaker 2: look to the Colts who are trading players off, as
- 11:56Speaker 2: we probably are speaking currently, and also what the Titans
- 11:59Speaker 2: are trying to do with their rebuilds, John, if you
- 12:01Speaker 2: had to pick a franchise to be dealing with right
- 12:04Speaker 2: now in a rebuild, would you rather be the Titans
- 12:06Speaker 2: right now or would you rather be the Colts right now?
- 12:08Speaker 1: Well, I'm not sure I want to be the Colts
- 12:11Speaker 1: just because of the equity that they've traded away, meaning
- 12:18Speaker 1: the two first-round picks and the need for a quarterback
- 12:22Speaker 1: over the long run. So I guess the Titans, but
- 12:26Speaker 1: it sort of feels like both– They have to prove
- 12:31Speaker 1: their way out, meaning they both look like they're swimming
- 12:35Speaker 1: a little bit. You can change that if you get
- 12:39Speaker 1: the right people involved, but it feels like they're both
- 12:43Speaker 1: still looking for major, major parts. I'd rather be the
- 12:46Speaker 1: Titans because I think they have the equity, but you
- 12:49Speaker 1: don't know about their quarterback either. So I'm not sure
- 12:52Speaker 1: I want to be either right now.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Listen, I wouldn't want to be either because I've got
- 12:55Speaker 4: ownership issues with both of them. Amy Adams... You know,
- 12:59Speaker 4: firing Mike Vrabel. They've done nothing since. That was a
- 13:02Speaker 4: stupid decision. And we don't know enough yet about Carly
- 13:06Speaker 4: Ursae Gordon, if I got that right. We're not quite
- 13:10Speaker 4: sure what, but the scene on the sidelines, I find
- 13:14Speaker 4: to be avoidable, right? I mean, it doesn't seem like
- 13:19Speaker 4: it's a good fit with those two owners. So perhaps
- 13:22Speaker 4: whichever one sells first. But I think John's right on
- 13:25Speaker 4: this one. I think it's the Titans because they have
- 13:27Speaker 4: a first-round pick. and and they the colts don't it's
- 13:30Speaker 4: going to be a great draft for quarterback so the
- 13:33Speaker 4: titans can pull the ripcord on cam ward this year
- 13:36Speaker 4: and say our bad but we've got another top pick
- 13:38Speaker 4: they may end up having the top pick but in
- 13:40Speaker 4: the top five where they're likely to be they can
- 13:41Speaker 4: at least change course whereas the colts have to go
- 13:44Speaker 4: into next season with daniel jones i mean that's what
- 13:47Speaker 4: they're talking about benching him now that colts aren't but
- 13:50Speaker 4: everyone wants him to be benched and the numbers say
- 13:52Speaker 4: he should be benched um sacks, interceptions, fumbles. I mean,
- 13:56Speaker 4: he's just not playing good football, and he's obviously not
- 13:59Speaker 4: the same guy he was. So I'll go with the Titans,
- 14:01Speaker 4: but I have questions about both franchises from an ownership
- 14:04Speaker 4: standpoint and a directional standpoint. So I'm not sure either
- 14:07Speaker 4: one is better positioned than the other.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Now we're going league-wide, as I bring everybody into this,
- 14:12Speaker 2: as we look at the NFC specifically. We talked a
- 14:15Speaker 2: bit about what the AFC is looking like right now,
- 14:17Speaker 2: kind of wide open.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Who's your Super Bowl contender for the NFC?
- 14:20Speaker 2: Because what the 49ers have done, and then what the
- 14:24Speaker 2: Seahawks have done that I've seen lately. We had some
- 14:27Speaker 2: time this week to watch some of the other games. Ryan,
- 14:29Speaker 2: who's impressed you the most?
- 14:30Speaker 1: Or someone else?
- 14:31Speaker 4: No, no, it's one of those two teams. I have
- 14:33Speaker 4: long been a fan of Kyle Shanahan. I think the
- 14:36Speaker 4: way that he strategizes, that he puts his offensive game
- 14:40Speaker 4: plan together, I think he's brilliant. But conversely, Mike McDonald
- 14:45Speaker 4: is sensational with his defense up there. They made the
- 14:48Speaker 4: move to trade for Quentin Nelson. Their quarterback situation frightens
- 14:53Speaker 4: me a little bit because I watched him against the Broncos.
- 14:56Speaker 4: He's either really good or he's really bad. There's not
- 14:59Speaker 4: a whole lot of in-between. But I think those are
- 15:01Speaker 4: the two teams. And I lean towards Seattle because I
- 15:03Speaker 4: think that their defense is capable of shutting down the
- 15:07Speaker 4: San Francisco 49ers. So I'll go with Seattle.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you also wonder... I mean, there's some reasons he
- 15:12Speaker 1: buys because Seattle looked really good the other night.
- 15:16Speaker 2: But.
- 15:16Speaker 1: They have shown that they know how they need to
- 15:20Speaker 1: play to get somewhere. The 49ers have, too. I think
- 15:23Speaker 1: what you worry about with San Francisco, first five games
- 15:26Speaker 1: look great. Injuries seem like they're always a factor. They're
- 15:32Speaker 1: becoming a little bit of a factor now. Can they
- 15:34Speaker 1: stay healthy? Can they make this last? McCaffrey's, what, in
- 15:37Speaker 1: his 10th year?
- 15:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:39Speaker 1: And he's a great player, but you do wonder, Because
- 15:43Speaker 1: of the franchise's history with always seeming to have these
- 15:45Speaker 1: injuries they can't quite overcome. Plus, when Seattle's right defensively, man,
- 15:52Speaker 1: they are the best.
- 15:54Speaker 4: They clamp you down.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 4: You get nothing.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And so both of them have issues that make them
- 16:01Speaker 1: not unbeatable.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Right.
- 16:03Speaker 1: And it still wouldn't surprise me if... If the Rams
- 16:06Speaker 1: got hot, got in, and became a factor.
- 16:08Speaker 4: But it's those three teams.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Because you look at the East, the South.
- 16:11Speaker 4: And the North. But they've got issues on defense.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, Minnesota looks like they're going to have
- 16:19Speaker 1: trouble offensively once their schedule gets tough.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Yeah. Which is the next month.
- 16:24Speaker 1: But the Bears, you know, we're not talking about the
- 16:26Speaker 1: Bears yet. And they're 5-2. They've come through an injury situation.
- 16:31Speaker 1: They can still be dangerous.
- 16:33Speaker 2: A lot of options, a lot of good football we've
- 16:34Speaker 2: got coming up for sure.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Stay with us here. We'll talk more about.
- 16:37Speaker 2: What's going on around the NFL. Jacksonville Jaguars bring the
- 16:46Speaker 2: community together just like Florida Blue does every day. For
- 16:49Speaker 2: over 80 years, they've been here committed to helping you
- 16:51Speaker 2: and your family live healthier lives. Proud to be the
- 16:55Speaker 2: presenting sponsor of Sunday's game, Florida Blue, committed to you,
- 16:58Speaker 2: committed to Jacksonville. So it's going to be a good
- 17:01Speaker 2: one this weekend against the Colts, finally back here at
- 17:04Speaker 2: Everbank Stadium. But last time we saw this team, they
- 17:08Speaker 2: were on the road in London. They lost a really
- 17:09Speaker 2: close matchup to the Texans. We didn't know what that
- 17:12Speaker 2: was going to be. You have a bye week where
- 17:13Speaker 2: everybody in the division loses, including the Texans, who, John,
- 17:18Speaker 2: when I watched that game, it felt like they really
- 17:20Speaker 2: got up and were ready to go for the Jaguars
- 17:21Speaker 2: game and just didn't quite look the same when they
- 17:23Speaker 2: took on the Giants this week. And part of that
- 17:25Speaker 2: is the Giants being a lot more impressive maybe than
- 17:28Speaker 2: I gave them credit for before this.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it is.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Sometimes when you play a team like the Giants that
- 17:33Speaker 1: really knows how they want to play and it's a
- 17:35Speaker 1: tough physical game remember it used to be really hard
- 17:38Speaker 1: to play the Titans for that reason because you know
- 17:41Speaker 1: you don't always play these teams that just really stick
- 17:45Speaker 1: to being physical and physical and especially the Texans who
- 17:48Speaker 1: believe like the Jaguars they're a physical team when they
- 17:52Speaker 1: start getting out physical then you know the coach told
- 17:56Speaker 1: me once sometimes teams come up like they're not trying
- 17:59Speaker 1: when they're not stopping the run And sometimes they're just
- 18:01Speaker 1: not stopping the run. They're trying to, they just can't
- 18:03Speaker 1: do it. So that may have been a factor with
- 18:07Speaker 1: Houston the other day. Look, if this was once for Houston,
- 18:12Speaker 1: you wouldn't worry. Because they're 2-5, I think they're good.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I still think they're a good team. But at some point, those,
- 18:20Speaker 1: you know... a good team can lose so much that
- 18:23Speaker 1: it sort of gets away from them.
- 18:25Speaker 4: How many times have they given up 30 or more
- 18:27Speaker 4: points this year? I mean, this is a team that
- 18:29Speaker 4: we thought was a championship caliber team. if only because
- 18:33Speaker 4: their defense. I mean, remember the playoff game in New
- 18:36Speaker 4: England last year where the quarterback was throwing souvenir interceptions
- 18:40Speaker 4: to anybody that wanted one, and yet the defense kept
- 18:43Speaker 4: getting the ball back and giving them more chances. Well,
- 18:45Speaker 4: it turns out that that defense didn't travel from last
- 18:48Speaker 4: year to this year. It's not the same. They haven't
- 18:50Speaker 4: gotten the same performances from Kwame Lasseter and Jalen Petrie's out.
- 18:54Speaker 4: They're just not playing very well on the front either.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Who would have thought you could run the ball right
- 18:58Speaker 4: up the gut against them? And yet... The Giants did.
- 19:02Speaker 4: So I– they're 2-5. I think if the Jaguars take
- 19:09Speaker 4: care of business and get a three-game lead this week
- 19:11Speaker 4: and they just keep steady pressure on them, the game
- 19:14Speaker 4: in December won't even matter.
- 19:15Speaker 1: It's– yeah, the steadiness– Because they're rolling for it home, John. Right.
- 19:20Speaker 1: And the steadiness– They've got to go on the road.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Is what you're talking about. And what you always wonder
- 19:24Speaker 1: about a team built on defense is– How long does
- 19:30Speaker 1: it hold together? How long? There's so many parts. And
- 19:35Speaker 1: I'm not sure the Texans are there yet where this
- 19:37Speaker 1: conversation is there yet, but there can be so many
- 19:40Speaker 1: parts with a defense as opposed to an offense where
- 19:42Speaker 1: if you have the quarterback, it can be hard to
- 19:45Speaker 1: maintain excellence through defense in this league. now for a
- 19:50Speaker 1: sustained period, and the Texans have been good for a
- 19:52Speaker 1: while on that side of the ball.
- 19:53Speaker 4: You watch. The Texans will go to Los Angeles after
- 19:55Speaker 4: the bye week, and the Chargers will get a win. Why?
- 19:58Speaker 4: Because it makes no sense. But everybody had the Chargers
- 20:00Speaker 4: as a contender, right? And the Chargers have had a
- 20:03Speaker 4: chance to reset here and see. If they don't sell
- 20:05Speaker 4: everybody off, I mean, the Texans could be out of
- 20:07Speaker 4: it next week if the Chargers get them. And I
- 20:09Speaker 4: think the Chargers are ripe for a win. And who
- 20:11Speaker 4: thought that some of these teams would get off the snide?
- 20:14Speaker 1: Chaos for chaos. Take it away. Yeah.
- 20:17Speaker 2: We talked a bit about the Titans earlier, but they
- 20:20Speaker 2: had a close one with the Browns. They ended up losing,
- 20:22Speaker 2: and Robert Sala is in charge of this rebuild, and
- 20:25Speaker 2: we don't have a ton of answers with what that
- 20:27Speaker 2: offense is going to look like, but it feels like
- 20:28Speaker 2: the defense has come together under Sala as they're trying
- 20:31Speaker 2: to get that new scheme down. Brian, the Jaguars play
- 20:34Speaker 2: them twice in three weeks coming.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Up soon here.
- 20:37Speaker 2: There's an opportunity there, but also I don't think these
- 20:39Speaker 2: are games that you ever want to overlook.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Well, you don't. The Jaguars have owned the series recently,
- 20:46Speaker 4: and here's the thing. They have invested a lot of
- 20:49Speaker 4: draft capital in Peter Skowronski, first-round pick, and J.C. Latham,
- 20:54Speaker 4: first-round pick, and they haven't played very good football. The
- 20:57Speaker 4: only chance that you're going to see Cam Ward have
- 20:59Speaker 4: an opportunity to be his best is if he has
- 21:02Speaker 4: time to throw. The same thing on the defensive side.
- 21:04Speaker 4: They've got Jeffrey Simmons, but They don't have a pass rush.
- 21:08Speaker 4: They're getting some things done, but it's not translating. I mean,
- 21:13Speaker 4: they did their best, and that's what they got, right?
- 21:16Speaker 4: They tied the game at the end, and that's what
- 21:18Speaker 4: they got. So I wouldn't take them for granted, but
- 21:22Speaker 4: to me, they're just not a very good football team
- 21:25Speaker 4: at all. I mean, there's nothing about them that makes
- 21:26Speaker 4: me say, oh, you've got to be careful about this.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Yeah, you never overlook a team in the division because
- 21:32Speaker 1: they can always bite you. They know you. So that's
- 21:37Speaker 1: always there. The Titans feel, to me, so much like
- 21:43Speaker 1: some of these Jaguars teams that we watched for years
- 21:46Speaker 1: when they were struggling. Sometimes when you reset and then
- 21:54Speaker 1: you can't, you're playing okay, but you can't quite get
- 21:57Speaker 1: a win. Remember, they were years under Gus. Yeah. Like that,
- 22:00Speaker 1: where they were playing okay, and then all of a
- 22:02Speaker 1: sudden you looked up and they were 2-7. And the
- 22:05Speaker 1: air went out of the balloon. And even if you're
- 22:08Speaker 1: doing the right things, if you're not getting some results,
- 22:11Speaker 1: you're kind of off the rails a little bit. And, again,
- 22:15Speaker 1: we were inside, so we felt that with the Gus
- 22:18Speaker 1: Bradley teams and some others. We're not inside the Titans,
- 22:22Speaker 1: so I don't know how it feels. But you wonder
- 22:25Speaker 1: at one and six when they're coming close, coming close,
- 22:28Speaker 1: at some point you need a payoff and they're not
- 22:31Speaker 1: getting it. So you wonder if it could slide again
- 22:33Speaker 1: on them. From a draft perspective, you hope so. But
- 22:36Speaker 1: that's sort of the question that I think they need
- 22:38Speaker 1: to answer in the next couple of weeks.
- 22:39Speaker 4: They were just steady and stable, Kai. I mean, back
- 22:41Speaker 4: when Floyd Reese was the GM, they had in their
- 22:43Speaker 4: press release every week, here are all of our draft picks,
- 22:45Speaker 4: and they're all in the starting lineup. I mean, they
- 22:47Speaker 4: took great pride in being a franchise that did things
- 22:51Speaker 4: the right way, and they were stable. They were mostly
- 22:54Speaker 4: at least a nine-win team year in and year out.
- 22:57Speaker 4: And then they pulled the ripcord on Mike Vrabel. And,
- 22:59Speaker 4: you know, they're changing coaches left and right. They're changing
- 23:02Speaker 4: general managers. You know, the ownership is the issue here
- 23:06Speaker 4: because they can't seem to decide who they want to be.
- 23:08Speaker 4: How long will they be patient with Salah? I mean,
- 23:11Speaker 4: if they only win one or two games this year,
- 23:13Speaker 4: do they bring him back? Who knows? Or do they
- 23:16Speaker 4: pull the ripcord on everyone because, well, we got the
- 23:18Speaker 4: first pick overall.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Well, that's sort of what I was getting to before.
- 23:20Speaker 1: You know, it feels from watching them a little bit,
- 23:24Speaker 1: which we do because they're in a division, Feels like
- 23:26Speaker 1: there's some stuff going right, getting a little bit closer,
- 23:29Speaker 1: and they can't quite get a win. Five years ago, okay,
- 23:34Speaker 1: you don't worry about it at all. They clearly go
- 23:35Speaker 1: on to the next year. Now you don't get those results.
- 23:39Speaker 4: It's such a win.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And everybody can point to examples. Well, look at the
- 23:43Speaker 1: Jaguars and the Bears last year. And it's not as patient.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I don't know if that's right or wrong, but it's
- 23:48Speaker 1: not as patient.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Well, they also just fired a couple of big wigs
- 23:51Speaker 4: in the front office. I mean, they just seem like
- 23:53Speaker 4: an unstable organization overall. on the whole, shouldn't lose to them.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Stay with us one more break, and then we'll be
- 23:59Speaker 2: back telling you about what's coming up.
- 24:00Speaker 1: The rest of the week.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Jaguars will be looking bold on Sunday as they wear
- 24:38Speaker 2: their rivalry uniforms, including teal helmets for the first time. Um,
- 24:43Speaker 2: there's some cool details on these. Uh, we posted online.
- 24:46Speaker 2: It's on jaguars.com, Jaguar socials. And John, I know you're
- 24:49Speaker 2: not a big uniform guy, but it is fun to
- 24:51Speaker 2: get something a little bit different. And I feel like
- 24:52Speaker 2: there's something someone can enjoy about every part of the outfit.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Those, uh, to me, I'm always fine. Uniforms either way.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I kind of liked the color rush way back when, uh,
- 25:03Speaker 1: you know, something different. It, It's a hot take. Okay.
- 25:06Speaker 4: It is a very hot take.
- 25:08Speaker 1: There are photos of me in the mustard uniform online somewhere. Oh, wow. Well,
- 25:12Speaker 1: there you go. In my dark past. I have some
- 25:13Speaker 1: homework to do. But, look, a lot of this clearly
- 25:19Speaker 1: is about having new memorabilia out there, too. I like
- 25:23Speaker 1: the uniforms. The stuff is really cool.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Like the shirts. All the merchandise. So, look, it's fun.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I got an email yesterday. Let me say it. you
- 25:33Speaker 1: can't tell me this isn't about money. Well, of course
- 25:35Speaker 1: it's about money. No one said it wasn't.
- 25:38Speaker 4: We've been doing it for 15 years.
- 25:40Speaker 1: So yeah, they're fun. They're cool.
- 25:41Speaker 2: They're fun.
- 25:42Speaker 4: I like them. You know what? I like the teal
- 25:45Speaker 4: helmet a whole lot more in person than I thought
- 25:47Speaker 4: I would.
- 25:48Speaker 2: It's brighter, and it has, I mean, there's a ton
- 25:51Speaker 2: of details in this. the 904 on the top, and
- 25:54Speaker 2: then it's got Duval on the back.
- 25:55Speaker 4: And look how muted the jacket. The cat head is
- 25:58Speaker 4: not that bright, brilliant gold that is on the regular helmet.
- 26:02Speaker 4: It's sort of a muted to kind of match the
- 26:04Speaker 4: face mask.
- 26:04Speaker 2: But it is sparkly.
- 26:06Speaker 1: That's key.
- 26:06Speaker 2: We love sparkle around here.
- 26:07Speaker 1: At least I do.
- 26:08Speaker 4: You know, I've seen a bunch of those, the rivalry uniforms.
- 26:12Speaker 4: And I think that the league did a good job
- 26:14Speaker 4: with them. I like the Patriots. I like the Bills.
- 26:16Speaker 4: I like the Cardinals. I think they've done a nice job.
- 26:19Speaker 1: I didn't love Houston's the other day. I didn't hate it.
- 26:23Speaker 1: It's their red ones, right?
- 26:24Speaker 4: I thought the Dolphins was unimaginative. It was just black,
- 26:27Speaker 4: and that didn't make a lot of sense to me,
- 26:29Speaker 4: but I like it.
- 26:31Speaker 1: People are always going to, I mean, I got a
- 26:33Speaker 1: lot of emails, oh, it looks like people are always
- 26:35Speaker 1: going to dislike new things. I mean, change is evil.
- 26:39Speaker 1: But I think it was pretty cool.
- 26:41Speaker 2: It definitely didn't go simple, and for that I give
- 26:43Speaker 2: them credit.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Listen, it's a one-off, maybe a two-off. They wear it
- 26:45Speaker 4: two or three times. It's fun.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Only once this season, though, so check it out and
- 26:49Speaker 2: check out the team store if you want to look
- 26:51Speaker 2: at them in person.
- 26:51Speaker 1: The jerseys are very nice.
- 26:53Speaker 2: But we will be back on Thursday as we preview
- 26:56Speaker 2: that matchup against the Colts.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Enjoy your day. We'll see you then.
