- 0:00Hey, y'all, welcome back to In THE Stillness.
- 0:03This is friendly. Thanks for joining me on this
- 0:05podcast episode. Today we're going to continue
- 0:08our study in First John as we started yesterday, and we're
- 0:13going to take this slow on purpose because these verses are
- 0:18dense to say the least. John writes in a very black and
- 0:22white way, but what he's actually communicating is super
- 0:26theological and pretty life altering if we truly sit with it
- 0:32and let it sink into our hearts. This passage is going to
- 0:36introduce a theme that you'll see throughout his entire book,
- 0:40Light versus darkness, truth versus deception, and real faith
- 0:46versus empty claims. So these are some verses that
- 0:51are not just going to inform you of the truth.
- 0:54It's going to expose, and it's in the best way.
- 0:58It's in a refining, loving way. But I wanted to prep y'all with
- 1:03that because it's very direct and it's words that I don't want
- 1:09us to just glaze over. We need to really sit with it.
- 1:13So we're going to be reading in first John chapter 1 verses 5
- 1:18through 7 today. This is the life giving message
- 1:23we heard Him share and it's still ringing in our ears.
- 1:27We now repeat His words to you. God is pure light.
- 1:33You will never find even a trace of darkness in Him.
- 1:38If we claim that we share life with Him but keep walking in the
- 1:42realm of darkness, we're fooling ourselves and not living the
- 1:46truth. But if we keep living in the
- 1:50pure light that surrounds Him, we share unbroken fellowship
- 1:54with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son continually
- 1:59cleanses us from all sin. OK, the very first thing that
- 2:05John claims is God is light. Meaning God is 100% holy, pure
- 2:15and good. He is reliable.
- 2:18John makes it clear there is not even an ounce of darkness in
- 2:22God. And when you think about it,
- 2:25darkness is simply the absence of light.
- 2:29So wherever there is darkness, God is not present, and where
- 2:34God is fully present, darkness cannot exist.
- 2:37They go hand in hand. So that's why Ephesians 5/8,
- 2:42when it commands us to live as children of light, it's not just
- 2:47about identity, it is a calling. So I just want to reflect and
- 2:52pause for a second. Are we living as children of
- 2:57light or just claiming that identity?
- 3:01And think about it in your own life.
- 3:04Where am I possibly allowing darkness to remain?
- 3:09Now light does something important.
- 3:11It reveals, it exposes. And in the darkness, everything
- 3:16can look the same. It's easy to hide, to blend in,
- 3:21to justify. But when light rushes in, it
- 3:25shows us what is actually there. And that's exactly what Jesus
- 3:30does. He reveals the motives of our
- 3:32hearts, what we're really living for.
- 3:36And I've personally seen this in my own life.
- 3:38I'm not going to go into too much of my testimony, but I was
- 3:42saved from a young age. But for a while, a big chunk of
- 3:47my life I lived for myself. I was carrying the title of
- 3:52Christian, but my life was not fully centered around Jesus.
- 3:57It was more so centered around what friendly wanted and
- 4:01eventually I hit a crossroads. John 14-6.
- 4:07It says Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, not a way.
- 4:13So you cannot walk in your own way and his simultaneously.
- 4:19So let me ask you all this, who am I really living for in my
- 4:25daily decisions, and am I building my life around Jesus or
- 4:30am I just fitting him into my life moving forward, John
- 4:35confronts a false belief that can still exist today.
- 4:41It might be a different wording, but I think we need to be really
- 4:43cautious and careful. It's that you can walk with God
- 4:47and remain in sin. But truthfully, as these verses
- 4:53point out, you cannot say that you love God and continue to
- 4:57pursue darkness. That does not mean perfection,
- 5:02but it means a transformation of desire.
- 5:05Because when you fully grasp the concept of the cross, something
- 5:10shifts. Luke 9 verse 23 says whoever
- 5:15wants to be my disciple must deny themselves, take up their
- 5:19cross daily, and follow me. Obviously this is Jesus speaking
- 5:23in Galatians 5 verse 24, Paul says that those who belong to
- 5:27Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
- 5:33So yes, the flesh is still going to want impure things, but the
- 5:39difference is that we do not live led by our flesh and its
- 5:43desires. As a believer, when you're born
- 5:45again. So think about these things.
- 5:49Am I denying myself or constantly giving in to myself?
- 5:53Am I justifying that? And what is God asking me to lay
- 5:58down today, right now? And this matters because of what
- 6:03Jesus actually did. Sin cannot exist in the presence
- 6:08of a holy God, which means we are completely separated on our
- 6:14own. No amount of being a good person
- 6:19or doing good things for God can fix that.
- 6:23John one verse 29 calls Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away
- 6:28the sin of the world. He is the fulfillment of what we
- 6:32see back in Leviticus for going into sacrifices and how those
- 6:38animal sacrifices, those only temporarily covered sin.
- 6:43But it was foreshadowing what was to come in Jesus.
- 6:47And Jesus did not just cover sin, He completely removed it.
- 6:52Guys, 1st Corinthians 6 verse 20 reminds us you were bought at a
- 6:57price. It was the price of Jesus's
- 7:00precious blood. So your life, it's not your own.
- 7:06And walking the light, it now begins to look like this.
- 7:10We live open and honest before God.
- 7:14What He reveals, what He shows us, we don't ignore, we respond.
- 7:20And that is where conviction sits, not to condemn us, but to
- 7:24correct us, because as we confess our sins, His blood, as
- 7:30it says in those verses, continually cleanses us.
- 7:34Romans 6, verse 4 says we have been given new life, so we don't
- 7:39stay in what we were saved from. First Thessalonians 4, it calls
- 7:45us to live lives that are holy and honorable.
- 7:48So ask yourself, am I living in honest fellowship with God, or
- 7:53am I hiding parts of my life? Do I respond to conviction or am
- 7:58I resisting it because I want to stay comfortable?
- 8:04Y'all, walking in the light does not mean that we're perfect by
- 8:08any means, but it does mean that you're actively pursuing purity
- 8:14in your heart, in your mind, in your motives.
- 8:18And the key is this, you're not striving for it.
- 8:23We abide in Christ. It starts with the desire to be
- 8:28near Him. And God is the one who
- 8:30transforms you. So don't let all of this
- 8:34overwhelm you because it's not in your own doing, it's the
- 8:39Lord. It's the Lord who works on your
- 8:41heart, and it's by His Son, his blood that constantly purifies
- 8:47us. We're just called to come to
- 8:49Him, to be open and honest to his transformation and what He
- 8:55wants to show us. So let's go ahead and closeout
- 8:58in prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you
- 9:05for your word that is direct, that rebukes us, that corrects
- 9:12us, but in the best way so that we can become more like you.
- 9:18Thank you, God, that you are light, You are pure, You're
- 9:21good, You're holy. Would you reveal anything in us
- 9:27that is not aligned with you? Give us a desire to walk in your
- 9:33pure light and to not return to what you've called us out of.
- 9:40Thank you Jesus, for your blood that continually cleanses us,
- 9:46that makes a way for us to be close to you, to be in union, to
- 9:50be in fellowship with you and the Father God.
- 9:55We don't want to just claim you, we want to truly live for you.
- 10:02Thank you, Jesus, thank you, Jesus, we love you and we give
- 10:09this day to you in your name. Amen.
- 10:13OK guys, well, that's today's episode.
- 10:15I know that there is just a lot to let sink in, and I'm praying
- 10:20that the Lord continues ministering to your heart and
- 10:24revealing new things to you. But I can't wait to see you on
- 10:27the next episode and to continue this study of first John
- 10:31together. Have a great rest of your day.
