- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Hey everybody, looking forward to hanging with you for a minute today.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: We're kind of talking about uh how to make this COVID virus, uh coronavirus, COVID-19, how to make this kind of very unusual stretch we're all in, uh quarantined or uh working in different situations and circumstances than normal, how to make it work for us.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: So um just wanted to share something.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Here's a thought.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Uh find the edges.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Find the edges.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: What in the world do you mean by that, dude?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Find the edges.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: You know, you talk about, you know, someone being an edgy person.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: You know, they uh they they they're cool, they're hip, they're happening, whatever.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: They just, man, they just they're edgy.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: What we mean typically by that is they they live on the edge, or maybe even beyond the edge, of what's common and acceptable.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Not, I wouldn't call it normal, but what's what's kind of you know uh you know comfortable to some degree to most people, and they live kind of outside it.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: They they push the envelope, you might say.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Well, what I want to suggest for you during this time is find your edge.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: What does that mean?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Find in your own life where the edges are, where have you kind of gotten comfortable?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Where have you gotten in uh in routines to the point that they've become ruts?
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Where are you uh stuck?
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Where are you not experiencing a sense of excitement and adventure?
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, all of that is at the edge or beyond the edge.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: We've talked about it before that God designed you and I to be at our best when we're just beyond, just across the line of our comfort zone, our familiarity zone, our you know, confidence zone.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, I've done that so many times I can do that in my sleep.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Well, do you ever do where's the edge of that?
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Here's the problem.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: We're at our best when we're at the edge or beyond it, not way beyond it, but somewhat beyond it.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Um and yet we resist it.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So, what I want to do is read you a couple of scriptures that I think kind of address that.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: They kind of address the edge thing.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: And I want you to, you know, the whole thing is this, man.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: All things work together for good.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: God's able to make all things work together for good.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: To those who love him, love God, and are called according to his purpose.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: What is his purpose?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: His purpose is to love you, have a love relationship with you.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: But also, uh, Jesus came to give us life, that life more abundantly.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: His purpose is to bring you into a life beyond a life you could have without him on your own.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And um he wants that for you.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: He wants to challenge you, coach you, push you, prod you.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Lovingly, lovingly.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: But uh I've got some friends that nudge me lovingly, and it doesn't always feel good.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: So you might need to deal with that.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: That lovingly doesn't mean it always feels good.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: But Philippians chapter 3 is a cool section of scripture, and um, I want to use it to talk about a phrase, but Philippians 3, verse 12 through 15.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Not that I've already obtained it or have already become perfect, and that word perfect there is mature.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: It's the word, I love this word, telias.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure I'm pronouncing it right, I'm not a Greek scholar, but it means having reached the intended destination, having achieved the result sought, having uh fulfilled potential.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: So what he's saying is not that I've already obtained it or have already reached my full potential.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Here's the deal, guys.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: I don't think any of us are gonna reach our full potential.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: I think God's put so much in us that we're never gonna get all of it activated.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: But wouldn't it be fun to try?
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Wouldn't it be fun to push the envelope?
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So here's what he said.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Not that I've already obtained it or have already become perfect.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: So, you know, you've got to think, okay, where's your so here he is, he's sort of at the edge.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: I'm not I've not obtained it all, and I'm not perfect.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: I haven't reached my full potential, right?
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: He's at the edge conceptually, he's looking at the edge of where he is.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: And listen to what he says, but I press on.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: I press on.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: I'm not perfect, I haven't obtained and done and had, you know, become everything God wants me to.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Excuse me.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: That's not COVID-19, by the way.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: It's just a cold or something.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: But I press on.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: So Paul's response when he finds the edges is to press on.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: It's not to say, oh, this is good.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: You know, I I've I've I've worked hard.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: I'm at this point in my prayer life, in my marriage, in my friendships, in my physical well-being.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm good.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: I think I'll I think I'll chill.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: It's not what he says.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: He says, but I press on so that.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: You gotta have a so that.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: I press on so that.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: You gotta have a so that.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: What does that mean?
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: You've gotta have a why.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Why am I why am I going?
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: You know, my wife and I go to Iron Tribe, great gym, love the people, uh, Corky and Debbie, and just a great trainers.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: It's just awesome.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: But uh, you know, there's times I don't feel like going, and I'm there and I'm stretching and getting ready, and I'm like, dude, why are you doing this, man?
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Why are you doing this?
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: You've got to have an answer to that question.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: And uh just a simple one there is this.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: I want to live as long as I can, and I want to feel as good as I can for as long as I can.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's one thing to add days to your life, it's another thing to add life to your days.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: I don't want to just have a lot of days, I want to have a lot of life in those days.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: I'd rather have fewer days and more life than more days and less life, if that makes sense.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: And they kind of tend to go together.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: So, not that I've already obtained it or I've already become perfect, but I press on.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Woo! That's that's strong talk, man.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: We don't, I don't rem I don't, I'm not a big, you know, I don't study out the the commentaries and all that.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: So I don't really know how old Paul was at this point, but uh I think he I think we could safely say he's past 30.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: And uh in fact, I would probably say he's if you take the 17 years in Damascus and 14 and 3 and blah blah blah, I would say he's probably late 40s, maybe even.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Maybe in his 50s.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: But I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which I was also laid hold of by Christ Jesus.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: I press on so that you gotta have a why.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: What's his why?
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Because I want to get a hold of what Jesus got a hold of me for.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: What does Jesus want for you?
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: What do you want for you that sometimes we're afraid to think this way.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: God forbid, God may want it for you too.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Maybe what you think you want that, oh, God probably doesn't.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Uh don't be so quick to do that.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: But I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: What a fascinating sentence.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: And then he goes on to say, brothers, I don't regard myself as having laid hold of it yet.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: I'm not there yet.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I'm not done.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: But one thing I do.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: But one thing I do.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Here's part of what I'm after today.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Find the edges.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Not to discourage yourself.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, I haven't grown much in my emotional management skills.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm not, uh, my communication with my spouse isn't what I'd like it to be.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: You know, finances, man, we're doing better, but I still think we're not managing, you know, physically.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm still, and this would be true of me, I still eat not as healthily as I should.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: So find the edges, not to discourage yourself, not to beat yourself up, but find the edges so you can identify growth opportunities.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: And that's how you should see them.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: You should see them as growth opportunities, not deficiency markers, not uh judgment points, not oh what a loser, coulda, woulda, shoulda.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Uh no.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: What what growth opportunities are in my life right now?
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: And what Paul's saying is I I haven't obtained my full potential, I I haven't walked in all that God has for me, but I want to.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna I'm gonna press on to do that.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: And he says, I don't regard myself as having grabbed it all yet, but this one thing I do, this one thing I do, here's what I want to talk to you about in this COVID-19 stretch.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Go after something.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Go after something, man.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: What's one thing that you've wanted to work on that you haven't had time or opportunity?
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: What's one thing that you've been aware of that is at the edge of your proficiency, competence, confidence, and you want to move that boundary line, but time, opportunity, whatever, you just haven't, but you want to, and you feel ready to think about that between now and next week.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: What's the one thing you've wanted to work on that you haven't had time or opportunity that you do now?
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: I don't mean in like I really thank COVID-19, but because of the awkward situation we're in, you may have some time and opportunity to read something you've been wanting to read for a while, to engage some podcasts you've been wanting to engage that are targeted at this one thing I do.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: I'd rather see progress in one area of my life notable, experiential, experiential, uh, enjoyable, tangible progress in one area of my life than just a general sense of well being.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: I'd like to have that too.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: But let's find the edge of where our growth opportunities are.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: All right?
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Love you guys.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Bye.
