- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It is a Monday, it is the 15th
- 0:17of April and I am delighted that you have invited me into your
- 0:22day. Thank you friend.
- 0:23I hope you're doing well. At the start of this new week
- 0:26here we are going to continue reading through this book of
- 0:30Second Samuel. Ah, this week we are going to
- 0:33cover some more territory. David is going to be successful,
- 0:36successful, successful. And then by the end of this
- 0:40week, he will have disgraced himself, unfortunately, and his
- 0:44character will be called into question.
- 0:47You know, that is how God rolls. God uses these broken, flawed
- 0:52people to achieve His purpose. He does not choose the
- 0:56incredibly righteous from cradle to grave.
- 0:59He chooses regular people like you and me.
- 1:02People who are flawed, people that make mistakes.
- 1:05Which means you know what? There is space in God's Kingdom
- 1:09for you and me to do amazing things, to share God's love in
- 1:14this world, even despite our cracks, crevices and broken
- 1:18bits, which is encouraging. So how about a friend?
- 1:21How about you and me read this chapter together?
- 1:25Yeah, great. Let's read together Second
- 1:28Samuel, Chapter 8. After this, David defeated and
- 1:43subdued the Philistines by conquering Gath, their largest
- 1:47town. David also conquered the land of
- 1:50Moab. He made the people lie down on
- 1:52the ground in a row, and he measured them off in groups with
- 1:56a length of rope. He measured off two groups to be
- 1:59executed for every one group to be spared.
- 2:03The Moabites who were spared became David's subject and paid
- 2:08him tribute money. David also destroyed the forces
- 2:12of Haddad Azar, son of Rehab, king of Zobah, when her dad is
- 2:17are marched out to strengthen his control along the Euphrates
- 2:21River. David captured 1000 Chariots,
- 2:257000 charioteers and 20,000 foot soldiers.
- 2:30He crippled all the chariot horses except enough for 100
- 2:34Chariots. When Arameans from Damascus
- 2:37arrived to help King Haddad Azar, David killed 22,000 of
- 2:42them. Then he placed several army
- 2:45garrisons in Damascus, The Aramean capital, and the
- 2:49Arameans became David Subject and paid him tribute money.
- 2:53So the Lord made David victorious wherever he went.
- 2:58David brought the gold Shields of Hadassah's officers to
- 3:01Jerusalem, along with the large amount of bronze from Hadassah's
- 3:05towns of Tiba and Barathi. When King TOI of Hamath heard
- 3:11that David had destroyed the entire army of Hadassah, he sent
- 3:16his son Joram to congratulate King David for his successful
- 3:20campaign. Her dad, Azar and Toy had been
- 3:24enemies and were often at war. Joram presented David with many
- 3:28gifts of silver, gold, and bronze.
- 3:32King David dedicated all these gifts to the Lord as he did with
- 3:36the silver and gold from the other nations he had defeated.
- 3:39From Edom, Moab, Ammon, Philistia and Amalek, and from
- 3:45her dad Azar, son of Rehab, King of Zobah.
- 3:49So David became even more famous when he returned from destroying
- 3:5318,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
- 3:57He placed army garrisons throughout Edom and all the
- 4:01Edomites became David subjects. In fact, the Lord made David
- 4:05victorious wherever he went. So David reigned over all
- 4:10Jerusalem and did what was just and right for all his people.
- 4:15Joeb, son of Zeruiah, was commander of the army.
- 4:19Jehoshaphat, son of a highland, was the royal historian.
- 4:23Zadok, son of a Hatib and Ahimelech, son of Abiathar were
- 4:28the priests. Suraya was the court secretary,
- 4:32Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, was captain of the King's bodyguard,
- 4:37and David's sons served as priestly leaders.
- 4:50Thought as we hear of these conquests of David and the
- 4:53Israelite army, we are so aware that all of this is leading
- 4:59toward a future. A future where there will be
- 5:02peace. Enough for your Kingdom to be
- 5:04established, for your people to reach their high points, for
- 5:09this dynasty to be firmly established so that you can
- 5:13achieve your purpose in the long run.
- 5:16That you can bring us Jesus now. Lord, we don't know what the
- 5:21long term plan, We don't know what the spiritual dynasties are
- 5:25that we are playing a part in now, but we just trust in you.
- 5:31We trust in your enormous plans that we don't understand, but in
- 5:37faith we serve you, and we thank you for your love and your
- 5:41provision. You are a good, good kind God,
- 5:46and we thank you. And it's in the name of Jesus
- 5:49that we pray all these things. Ah man.
