Transcript
- 0:00Good evening, Grace Harbor. It’s Dan.
- 0:03I hope you had a Tuesday full of both anticipation and love in action!
- 0:09Today felt a little bit like the calm before the storm here in Grace Harbor.
- 0:13A lot of the shops downtown closed early to let everyone get home
- 0:17and finish preparing for tomorrow.
- 0:19I stopped into Fruit of the Earth, which is the bakery
- 0:22where I get the bread we use for communion during our church services.
- 0:26While they were packing up my order, I saw that they had just four croissants
- 0:30left - one traditional, two chocolate, and one cookie butter.
- 0:34It seemed like a sign that they needed to come home
- 0:37with me for our family of four to enjoy tomorrow morning!
- 0:41As I was putting all of that in my car, I noticed that Brie, who owns
- 0:45the bakery, was starting to bring the tables
- 0:47and chairs in from the front patio, as they’ll be closed the rest of the week.
- 0:52I remembered our time together this morning when we set our intentions
- 0:55for how we might stay focused
- 0:57on the true meaning of Christmas and put love into action -
- 1:00and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to do just that.
- 1:05She appreciated my help, as the tables can be
- 1:07a little difficult to get through the door by yourself.
- 1:10But I decided to do more than just lift a few things and go on my way.
- 1:15Especially since she was getting ready to start a few days of well-deserved rest,
- 1:20I wanted to encourage her and let her know how much she means to our community.
- 1:25I told her that her pastries bring so many people
- 1:29so much joy - especially my kids!
- 1:32And by making the bread we use for communion, which is a really important
- 1:36part of our church services, she’s helping people experience the love of God.
- 1:42How did your day go?
- 1:44Did thinking about it ahead of time help you put love into action?
- 1:48I know you’re probably buzzing with excitement about all that’s coming
- 1:51the next two days, but let’s not overlook or forget all the blessings of today.
- 1:57They are moments for gratitude - and it *is*
- 2:00still Gratituesday, after all, even though it’s a holiday week.
- 2:04So, back to our question: Did thinking about sharing
- 2:07God’s love ahead of time help you put it into action?
- 2:11Sometimes when we set our intentions, we pick out specific things we want to do.
- 2:15For example, maybe you knew you’d be with one of your adults the whole day
- 2:19since school is out.
- 2:21So, you were looking for ways you could help your adult, who
- 2:24no doubt still had some important things to get done.
- 2:27Other times, you don’t have anything or anyone specific in mind,
- 2:32but you know what kind of thing you’d like to do, so you keep your eyes
- 2:36open for opportunities that come up during the day.
- 2:39That’s what happened to me at the bakery.
- 2:41I wasn’t planning on helping Brie close up shop,
- 2:44but once I saw her working on it, I knew it would be a lot easier
- 2:48and more fun if she didn’t have to do it alone.
- 2:50And, like I said, it also gave me the chance to encourage her with my words.
- 2:56Take a moment as a family and reflect on your day.
- 3:00Very briefly talk about what you did, the people you saw, and see if you can
- 3:05each identify one moment where either you gave or received God’s love today.
- 3:11If you need more time, you can pause the podcast,
- 3:14and I’ll be right here when you get back.
- 3:46I can’t think of a
- 3:47better way to end the night before Christmas Eve
- 3:50than naming ways in which we have seen God’s love in action through our families.
- 3:54It really gets to the heart of Christmas.
- 3:57Let’s close tonight with a prayer.
- 3:59If you want to, you can close your eyes and fold your hand.
- 4:04Dear God, we thank you that your love is all around us.
- 4:08It fills our hearts, it inspires us to action,
- 4:12and it flows through other people to us.
- 4:15Give us a good night’s sleep tonight so that we can wake up
- 4:18rested and refreshed, and ready to celebrate Christmas Eve.
- 4:23Amen.
- 4:24Alright, Grace Harbor.
- 4:25Sleep well, and I’ll talk to you in the morning.
