- 2:09Or Amy Shuler a good one and kanawh candychmister Ben Selango are here with some
- 2:13sort of an announcement. Again, as I said, Yastria, I don't
- 2:15even know what it is. I'll find out when you do a little later
- 2:17on as we get ready for the Dirty Birds opening game. The Birds are
- 2:21holding a home run derby tomorrow at go Mark Ballpark. Jill Garren for the
- 2:25Birds is here to talk about that. Natalie Tennant, a former West Virginia
- 2:29Secretary of State who is running as a Democrat for Kanaw Candy Commission, will
- 2:32be stopping by a little bit later on. Plus we're gonna spend some time
- 2:37talking about Dancing with the Stars, a special event going on in conjunction with
- 2:39that here in Charleston. How was that for a Friday show? Now,
- 2:43normally we would have Hannah Gardner from the Kanaw Charlesty Maine Association not at this
- 2:46time, but Hannah is not with us this morning. Hannah had a bit
- 2:52of an emergency situation with one of her pets, so positive thoughts to her
- 2:55and her dog in that situation. We don't have Hannah, but we do
- 2:59have the pet. The pictures posted at Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and the
- 3:02Dave Vlan Show and X it's Rascal. Rascal is a three month old male,
- 3:08not fixed yet but will be micro chipped. All shots are up to
- 3:12date now. Hannah tells me that Rascal is a real sweetheart, loves to
- 3:16run and play. He was taken in as a stray. So go get
- 3:23Rascal and again I've get the picture posted of Rascal on Dave Allen Radio and
- 3:25Facebook and the Dave Valen Show at Dave A seventy on X. The artist
- 3:30formally known as Twitter now about the building reconstruction going on. Talk to Handa
- 3:34about that as well. They are still hoping to get the necessary repairs needed,
- 3:38but that's temporary. They are looking for a new location for the animal's
- 3:42shelter and they definitely need it in my opinion. So again, our best
- 3:46wishes out to Hannah. She had an emergency situation with one of her own
- 3:50personal patch. You deal with pets, it's kind of like a teacher,
- 3:53I guess that deals with kids. All day. Well, you got kids
- 3:54at home too, so she's taking care of that. We'll try to have
- 3:58Hannah back with us next week. But again, Rascal's photo that's our pet
- 4:00of the week is posted online on my social media sit so go take a
- 4:04look at Rascal three months old, not fixed it with but will be an
- 4:10absolute sweetheart of a puppy. But Hannah did want me to mention it is
- 4:14puppy, so keep that in mind. It has the ways of puppies,
- 4:16so keep that in my butt. Would be a great pet for somebody,
- 4:21all right. That will wrap up that segment of Dave Violance showing five Any
- 4:25Lives brought to part by General Hardware of Winfield of Milton and General Lumber of
- 4:30Windfield. If you're planning a project this spring, shop locally. They're also
- 4:31hiring to stop by any location for details. Visit General Hardware wv dot com.
- 4:36Charleston Mere, Amy Shuolter, good One and Kadawha County Commissioner Ben Solango
- 4:42are here. Good morning, Good morning, your mayorship, Good morning,
- 4:45your Commissionership. I love hearing about the shelter. It's where we got our
- 4:48bus, Gus the bus, goodwin many many years ago, a Lab Saint
- 4:54Bernard. We didn't know he was a Lab Saint Bernard when we first got
- 4:57him. We just thought he was a lab. Oh my gosh, he'sn't
- 5:00show me the passing around the picture. And he was the best dog,
- 5:03the best dog, the best dog. He lived to fifteen and he I
- 5:09think his fighting weight he got up to about one hundred and thirty seven pounds.
- 5:12Yeah, it's a big boy, but he still acted like a lap
- 5:14dog. But he was the best dog we ever had. And we lost
- 5:17him in January. And every single time you have your pet on Friday,
- 5:24I sometimes may take screenshots and send it to Booth Goodwin and say, hey,
- 5:28look at this Rascal is three months old. We're a big dog family.
- 5:31We're a big dog family. We are too. We have three dogs.
- 5:34And Tara had to wrestle a chipmunk out of our one hundred pound Golden
- 5:39retriever's mouth this morning. You're talking about the puppy face. We don't have
- 5:43puppies, but they're still in the puppy face for some reason. Yeah and
- 5:46yeah, he caught a chipmunk and Tara had to hold brought out of his
- 5:48mouth this morning. Very exact Commissioner Slango, why is Pete at your house?
- 5:55All right? So I got a text earlier in the week from from
- 5:59the from the law Farm Slango and good one, and they they ask,
- 6:03don't get, don't get. Rumors started that they could come on because there
- 6:08was some sort of an announcements. I'm going to leave it. I don't
- 6:10know who's going to make the announcement, so I'll kick it off and I'll
- 6:14allow Commissioner Slango to do that. But you know, we started, you
- 6:17know, I was thinking about this morning. You know, back in twenty
- 6:20twenty two, we all got together and announced our vision to revitalize part of
- 6:28a large, very large part of downtown Charleston with the Capital Sports Center,
- 6:33And you know, I was thinking about it this morning. We've been talking
- 6:36about this since twenty fourteen. Technically, I mean, we've been talking about
- 6:41a Capital Sports Complex. We've been talking about sports tourism, which is of
- 6:44course a forty billion dollar industry, one of the industries that's growing faster than
- 6:48anywhere. If you were a parent, a grandparent, and aunt and uncle,
- 6:51a cousin and brother, you see and travel all over as we did,
- 6:56as most families do a lot of families do to travel with your kids.
- 7:00And so you know, since that time, we developed an authority to
- 7:04help oversee and make good decisions about the direction. And so we took our
- 7:09time. I mean large economic development projects and by the way, this is
- 7:13a very large economic development project takes time. We've developed an authority, we
- 7:18got the support from our federal partners, some millions of funding of dollars from
- 7:25them, of course, our amazing partners at the county, millions of dollars
- 7:28from them, millions of dollars from the City of Charleston. We're working with
- 7:32a group sports facilities and who literally have built I think over seventy I don't
- 7:40want to give the exact number, but over seventy of these type of facilities
- 7:44to make sure, like what are we putting in here. We think we
- 7:46know what we want, we think we know will work, but let's go
- 7:49to the experts and say, what are the things that we really need?
- 7:53And so those are the things that have been happening. People ask me all
- 7:55the time, Hey where are you. That's a brief snapshot of where we've
- 7:59been to where we are today. Yeah, And the good part about this,
- 8:03and this was This was a This has been a difficult process, more
- 8:07difficult than I thought it would be, probably the mayor thought it would be
- 8:11in the beginning because of all the way that the property was structured, the
- 8:16way that the agreements obviously that had been in place for many many years were
- 8:22structured. But this week we were able to close on the Macy's property,
- 8:26which was which took her effort. Kevin Baker has been incredible. I mean
- 8:35they have worked tirelessly, Chris Settles, Mark Slotnick, you know, our
- 8:37entire team, the Mayor's entire team. So what we're doing now is we're
- 8:43able to finally get the agreements in place. We've recorded the documents, and
- 8:46the Sports Authority now owns the Macy's building. So what we can do is
- 8:52start demolition. I think on Monday we're going to have some walkthroughs with media
- 8:58and next Thursday, correct me if I'm wrong on the time, but next
- 9:01Thursday at one we're going to a press conference in front of the Macy's building
- 9:05and Rodney Loftus, who's been on standby. Rodney, thank you, thank
- 9:09you for your patience. We have been so close, literally out in Bulldawser
- 9:13in the back parking lot. Right now, we're gonna we're gonna knock something
- 9:16down. I don't know what he's gonna knock down, but I'm gonna leave
- 9:18that to him. Something we can safely knock down. But this has been
- 9:20a very long process, but we're moving forward. We were able to close.
- 9:28I think we've closed on was it Wednesday? It was Wednesday, Yeah,
- 9:33Wednesday afternoon. We were able to actually record the documents. We've been
- 9:37working hard with the whole group. Obviously, they have a tremendous interest in
- 9:41this. They have an interest in making sure that their property is protected.
- 9:45We've been working with the bond holders, they have an interest in this.
- 9:48But we were finally able to get all of that together, at least on
- 9:50the Macy's part, so that we can press forward. And I want to
- 9:54give a shout out to CURA too, the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority really who
- 10:00has been a champion of this, I mean in development. That's why they
- 10:03were formed way back when, and they were a real big champion in this,
- 10:07and they helped us truly make this happen. Without their support and their
- 10:11help, we wouldn't have been able to make that happen. Yeah, absolutely,
- 10:16they've been great. You know, we've our county manager Jennifer Harold has
- 10:20been wonderful. She's put in a lot of time, a lot of effort
- 10:24on this. The board of course, Steve White's the President of the board,
- 10:26and all the others, Nancy and Kyle and Nate Burton. You know,
- 10:33they've they've worked incredibly hard on this as well. Commissioner Carper and commission
- 10:37Wheeler, commission President Wheeler, they've been they've been a big support of this
- 10:41because they've seen how this works. They've seen the success at the Shawnee Sports
- 10:48Complex bringing in you know, over one hundred and fifty million dollars in its
- 10:52first five years and economic impact. We're bringing in thirty to forty million dollars
- 10:56this year alone based upon the US whist tornaments that are coming in in the
- 11:00Capitol Cup, which brought an eight to ten million dollars just three days after
- 11:03the complex was hit with a tornado. You know, this this works.
- 11:07So we begin a lot of calls from the folks at the hotels, the
- 11:11restaurants, everybody's status got thanks, Well, I got a call from the
- 11:16hotel yesterday is Maryah. So that's the status. We actually were able to
- 11:20close on the Macy's property, and we wanted to announce that here because we've
- 11:22talked about, you know, so many times on here about what the progress
- 11:26is. There were a lot of legal hurdles, to be honest, there
- 11:31were multiple lawsuits that were going on that the lawyers, that lawyers much smarter
- 11:35than me, were able to negotiate and try to Always the lawyers, there's
- 11:39always the dag on lawyers, and then you've got different easements you've got to
- 11:45deal with. You've got bond holders who were kind of everywhere, I mean,
- 11:48I forget even forget where they're based, taxas or somewhere, and you
- 11:52know, you've got to work all this out. You have the whole group.
- 11:54And uh so, finally we were able to get that done. So
- 11:58that's why we wanted to come in and I'm for share with you that's the
- 12:01status. Yeah, And so again to kind of recap the announcement is that
- 12:07and we had kind of alluded to when you were on the show earlier this
- 12:09week that we just didn't have the finals, is that you're going to start
- 12:13to see some earth moving and more importantly, some things being torn down.
- 12:18That's exactly right. The punchline is this, The Macy's building is coming down.
- 12:22It's been a long time in coming, and what is going to be
- 12:26in replace of that building is truly going to continue the sentergy, the energy
- 12:31that we have in downtown Charleston. There isn't a day that goes by that
- 12:35somebody doesn't talk to me about a new act that's coming in, a concert
- 12:39that's coming in. Families that are flooding from Shawnee. Guess where they stay.
- 12:43They stay with us for days on end. And you know, if
- 12:48you were anywhere in the city of Charleston over the last week and you saw
- 12:50one hundred and twenty teams with about two thousand girls playing volleyball, well think
- 12:56about that. Okay, that's a nice chunk of business. That's a lot
- 12:58of people in town. That's small potatoes compared to what we're getting ready to
- 13:03do. That's a small small look at what we're ready to do. And
- 13:07I'll just I'll leave my comments with this. You know, council member Pat
- 13:11Jones, whose son is a fantastic coach in Nitro and he said, you
- 13:18know, he's actually said it. He said publicly on the council floor last
- 13:22week, he said, you know, I had my concerns about this.
- 13:26I knew you were giving me the numbers billion dollars and the hotels and the
- 13:28restaurants, and how it changed the face of so many communities, he said,
- 13:33And I understood what you're saying. I didn't really get it. So
- 13:35I went to Pittsburgh, and I went to Pittsburgh with my kids, and
- 13:37I saw what can happen when you have a facility like this to a community.
- 13:43He said. If I wasn't in before, I'm in now because I
- 13:45understand the return on investment. I understand not only that from a travel sports
- 13:50tourism, but I also understand it now and most important for our kids here.
- 13:54Our kids here deserve and need good places to play. You know,
- 13:58we've got some outstanding athletes here, and not only outstanding athletes that are going
- 14:03to go on get college scholarships, play play volleyball or basketball, but we
- 14:09also have a community that their children need to learn and develop and grow.
- 14:13They don't know what they want to do. Let's give them place to figure
- 14:16that out. Let me read a quick text. I know you both got
- 14:20to go, but this is I think, and again we don't want to.
- 14:22I'm going to get into timeline before I let you go to But somebody
- 14:26texts want to know what would the parking situation be for the sports complex.
- 14:28I know we're not quite there yet. The town Center Mall parking garage looks
- 14:33looks like am Offman nest according to a Texter. So I guess all that's
- 14:37going to come and at some point, I mean, we're not We're not
- 14:39anywhere close to that yet. I'll go ahead and just I'll give it to
- 14:41Commissioner Slinger, but I'll just go ahead and say this. We need those
- 14:45parking garages for a variety of different reasons. By the way, we need
- 14:48them because of they're booked. By the way they get booked. We have
- 14:52a lot of people that have monthly, monthly passes to those parking garages.
- 14:58Don't forget we have a TC Energy that's also coming into town. We have
- 15:01a lot of businesses that are growing. And oh, by the way,
- 15:03we have a lot of residential that's popping up downtown. So those parking lots
- 15:09are going to be important, not just for this but for the entire community,
- 15:13not just the Capital Sports Center. Yeah, I think that's the next
- 15:16piece of the puzzle. We've got to look at exactly how that's going to
- 15:20be structured. I know there are some hotels that are nearby that are interested
- 15:24in parking lots, and so somebody actually asked me in the hall this morning
- 15:28what the status of a new hotel was in Charleston. Well, I can
- 15:31say from what I know, there are several projects that are planned that are
- 15:37watching what we're doing against It's all going to be built around us pretty much.
- 15:39It's like City Center. It's like Plaza. People were waiting for us
- 15:43to build the park. Now look at it. Now look at city Center.
- 15:45I mean, it's the go to place, go to place. And
- 15:48so there are other projects. I know there's a restaurant that's waiting to see
- 15:52what we do. Their hotels are looking. So that's why it's another big
- 15:56change we move forward to give them some confidence that this is this is happening.
- 16:02All right, Well, guys, I appreciate you making the announcement to
- 16:04here, uh and you can be hearing a whole lot more about this.
- 16:07You said there's going to be sort of a media walkthrough I think next week
- 16:11and then an actual press conference on Thursday. Is I think Monday at one
- 16:15am. I right, I think, and then Thursday at one is going
- 16:18to be the press conference where we'll we'll go over there and Rodney is I
- 16:22hope Rodney let them, lets the mayor knock something down. I absolutely will
- 16:26be in the back with Ron Butlin from Cure. I think we'll just jump
- 16:29in that and take a take a quick wall down. We appreciate you,
- 16:32Dave, and thanks to everybody for your support. My phone is blowing up.
- 16:36When's it going to be done? And all this is going to be
- 16:38because I had had a few text people saying, well is this going to
- 16:41be there? And that's going to be there. We're going to talk about
- 16:42that. We got to start, or we're going to start. We're getting
- 16:45that building down first, that's right. And it'll be a public input,
- 16:49of course, when we've had tremendous public input by the wall the past two
- 16:53years. I mean we've been flooded. I mean that's why you know we
- 16:56worked with sports facilities inc. Last thing I'll say is the public has given
- 17:00us incredible input on Ready. All right, guys, I appreciate you both
- 17:03being here. Thanks a lot, Thanks a lot. Nine twenty four of

- 20:06good. We're really excited about a lot of new items at the ballpark,

- 20:36know everybody's excited about that. But we're excited before all that about this event
- 20:40that's going to be going on tomorrow, this home run Derby. Talk about
- 20:42it. Yeah, So the home run Derby. We have not announced our
- 20:45full player set yet. Quite frankly, I think some of the guys didn't
- 20:51realize we had a home run derby going on. A lot of players just
- 20:53kind of show up and they do what they're told, you know. But
- 20:56the big name that I'm excited about for the home run derby is Keon Barnum.
- 20:59He is the one that hit a massive home run two years ago when
- 21:03he played for Lexington here and it's still sitting up on that building behind right
- 21:07we're talking. I was talking Andy Shay about that yesterday. That's that ball.
- 21:11I mean, I mean, I don't know how many feet it was.
- 21:15I mean it hit somewhere near like Cistonville or something. I mean it.
- 21:19And so he's going to be taking party. But there's also and I'm
- 21:22always say this in huge the term celebrity, but there's some pretty well known
- 21:26people in the community. They're going to be taking part in the home run
- 21:29derby as well. County Commissioner Ben Selango, who was just here. Who
- 21:33by the way, and since he's told me the story, I'm never gonna
- 21:36let it die that Selango scored the basket for the wrong team when he was
- 21:41a child in basketball. But he's gonna try his lucky hitting mar But Solango
- 21:45is gonna be out there hitting them in the balls. He is as well,
- 21:47He's gonna have his work cut out for him, because I think the
- 21:48big name in the celebrity round, as you said, is going to be
- 21:52Chad Akers. He actually used to play for the Charleston Wheelers back when they
- 21:56were in the Reds organization. He played triple A. And because there's always
- 22:00a Logan connection from my hometown, Logan, West Virginia exactly roomed with Ichiro
- 22:04Suzuki. Wow I did not that was his roommate when he was in the
- 22:07minors. So so Chad's going to be taking part and that's good also,
- 22:11I understand. Can I throw out a couple of Avon Coburn YEP, former
- 22:17WVU football standout, is going to be there, and from Metro News,
- 22:21our very own Jared Lewis is going to be there as well. The pride
- 22:25of the State of Indiana is going to be out there as well. And
- 22:27Jared's a young guy. He's not like old guys like me that can't do
- 22:30I mean, Jared probably do pretty well for himself. Hopefully we'll see again
- 22:34the celebrity guys. They don't have to hit over the home run fence.
- 22:37They just have to hit it out of the infield in the air, so
- 22:38we're not asking for too much, but we'll see. I'm gonna tell you
- 22:41I know Chad Acres very well, and I think Chad has got a pretty
- 22:45good chance of putting it over the fence, even at his age. He's
- 22:47probably gonna guess he's a few years younger than I am. He's probably his
- 22:49late forties right now, but he still plays competitive softball. I think Chad
- 22:52could probably put that ball over the fence still, But we'll see what happens
- 22:56to someone else is going to be going on besides the home run. I
- 22:57mean, if it's a big day of activity tomorrow exactly. So, our
- 23:00gates are opening at five o'clock. The big one that I hope fans really
- 23:03come out for is our players are going to be there to mingle with the
- 23:06fans throughout the entire home run derby. We're going to have a select time
- 23:08for autographs before the derby starts at six point thirty. The guys that aren't
- 23:12participating in the derby, they're going to be walking around interacting with fans,
- 23:15signing autographs. We also have some local little leagues that'll be out in the
- 23:18outfield shagging the balls during the home run derby. So again, like we
- 23:22mentioned, we have the Rubenberger, We're gonna have all of these fun opportunities
- 23:26for people to learn what's going on for the Dirty Bird season this year.
- 23:30And of course, the weather's gonna be good. It's gonna be a little
- 23:32bit cooler. It was picture perfect for media day over there yesterday, but
- 23:34we get the rain now. But the rain's going to be moving away and
- 23:37it's the weather is going to be fantastic. And it's just a great opportunity
- 23:41too for fans to be able to come out, maybe just walk around,
- 23:45walk around the ballpark and take it on them, because if you come to
- 23:48a game, you may you know you're interested getting your seats or getting into
- 23:49the beer line or the hot dog line or whatever. You get to actually
- 23:52and plus to interact with the players. And that's one of the great things
- 23:56I like about what the what the Dirty Birds do and this league, but
- 24:00specifically with this team, Jill, is that they're very interactive. I mean,
- 24:04you guys have been out in the schools doing things, You've been out
- 24:07in the communities doing things, really becoming a big part of the community.
- 24:11One of the first things that some of the players asked me when they found
- 24:12out I'm in charge of community relations. They said, Hey, are we
- 24:15going to schools? Are we going to hospitals? That was the first thing
- 24:18they asked. They want to be a part of this community. So I'm
- 24:21excited about this season, and it's a great opportunity, like you said,
- 24:22for the fans to get to know the guys in a more relaxed setting than
- 24:26a game. Again, I'm gonna have all you guys back on opening Day,
- 24:27which Thursday, you're going to bring me a manager of the manager will
- 24:30be here. I think a player or two usually come in and the GM
- 24:34and different staff and so on and so forth. And you're listening right now
- 24:38to not me, but her, the play by play voice. Yes,
- 24:41ch the Dirty Birds. What kind of preparation you've been doing to get ready
- 24:45for that? It's been on the back of burner up until yesterday media Day,
- 24:48And now that the media day, the press conference is over and now
- 24:51I can focus in on that. But really my prep is just getting to
- 24:53know the guys outside of the baseball statistics. I have to talk for three
- 24:57hours by myself. I need to have some good story. People don't,
- 25:00I think realize, and I've done. I've not done a whole lot of
- 25:03sports play by play, but I have done the three the three major sports,
- 25:07and baseball is a little bit different because you don't always have action,
- 25:11you know, And that's why if you listen to I think, you know,
- 25:14my my idol growing up was the great Marty Brenham for the Cincinnati Retz.
- 25:17You gotta have stories, and you can only can't have dead air.
- 25:22That's the enemy of any broadcast or in any format. But you can't.
- 25:25You can't just talk about the action all the time because baseball there's not always
- 25:27something going on. There's pitching changes, there's you know, so on and
- 25:30so forth, and you gotta have stories. You got to be able to
- 25:33say, Okay, all right, well this player, you know, spends
- 25:37his spare time doing this and his talk about his family or something like that.
- 25:41You got to have all that stuff right. And you mentioned family.
- 25:44A lot of the guys have their wives and girlfriends that visit them or they
- 25:47stay here at them throughout the season. I make a point to get to
- 25:48know those girls so I can get the stories from them, their point of
- 25:52view, I just get back to the home run derby again tomorrow at the
- 25:55ballpark. Gates are going to open up five thirty. Home run Derby starts
- 25:57at six thirty. And again, there's two two different levels of this.
- 26:00You've got the actual professionals that are going to be out there, and you're
- 26:03gonna let the little leaguers I guess come out there and shags and balls and
- 26:07whatever. And then you're gonna have some members of the local community. We've
- 26:11mentioned a few of them that are going to be out there. I think
- 26:14having acres in there that that may be a ringer right there. I think
- 26:18I think so too. He was. He was kind of a last minute
- 26:19in addition, and I think if we told people who signed up that he
- 26:22was going to be a part of it, they might have backed out.
- 26:25So I'm happy he was last minute. And now can we can people still
- 26:29sign up for that or is is it over? In terms of the local
- 26:30community that one is over. If you are a little league that wants to
- 26:34participate, please reach out to me and we can have you come out in
- 26:37the field with the players as well. What's the best way to do then,
- 26:40Jim, you can contact me at Jay Garan at Dirtybirds baseball dot com
- 26:44And uh, the price kids twelve and under get in free for twelve and
- 26:48up is how much? I believe it's seven dollars a normal, normal price.
- 26:52It's like a normal, normal, normal event, all right, And
- 26:53on opening night, and we're going to talk about that next Thursday, but
- 26:56on no opening night, can you give us little preview of some of the
- 27:00things are going to be happening in opening night? Well, I'm actually excited.
- 27:02This is technically Dusty, our mascot's first opening night because we didn't bring
- 27:06out Dusty until halfway through the season last year. So we're really making it
- 27:08a big party, Dusty's first baseball opening night. We're gonna have a red
- 27:12carpet, there's going to be balloons everywhere. There'll be balloon opportunities, and
- 27:17I think we're going to have some players interacting with the fans as well pre
- 27:19game, but we're still figuring that part out. You have a text here
- 27:22for you, Okay says have you considered the baseball team setting up mentorships with
- 27:27the kids? I have not considered that, but I think that's a great
- 27:30idea. I know that we have some Little League clinics that will have be
- 27:34put on will have different hospital visits and school visits, but actually setting up
- 27:40in mentorship is a great idea, specifically guys who are local or around the
- 27:44area. All right, well again, the home run Derby's tomorrow, over
- 27:48to go more Ballpark. Jill. I appreciate you taking time out of your
- 27:49schedule to be here. Get used to Jill's voice because she's going to be
- 27:52on the air with me a lot this year. And I'm going to have
- 27:55you and the team and everybody back for opening Day and go Jarret Lewis tomorrow.
- 28:00He's the pride of WVRC Media and he's out there gonna be He's gonna
- 28:03he's gonna do well tomorrow. I have faith and confidence in the kid.
- 28:06He'll he'll do well. Great, Thanks David. All Right, Jill Garren

- 31:04Natalie Tenant, Democratic candidate for Knaw count Commission, joined us. Natalie,
- 31:07good morning and welcome to the show. Thank you very much, and
- 31:11Dave, I especially want to thank you. I know we've had our ins
- 31:14and out sometimes always agreeing on things, but I really appreciate that you're having
- 31:18me here because this is a good platform. It's great for the community.
- 31:22We need local journalism. I know you're not news but your talk, but
- 31:26we need local journalism to one because I love your glocal journalism and too,
- 31:33we got to keep people accountable and you know, transparent and all that good
- 31:37stuff. Yeah, that's why we need this. I appreciate it. I
- 31:41have fun, that's the bottom line. I have fun. So you are,
- 31:45of course very well known in political circus former secretary of State, and
- 31:48you've run for other offices, and you've remained quite engaged in the political process
- 31:52even when you weren't in office. But for those who may not know Natalie
- 31:55Tennant, give us the bio in Natalie Tenant. Oh, I don't have
- 31:59enough time. As youngest of seven children, raised on a farm in Marion
- 32:01County and born on Christmas Day. But what I think that's part of raised
- 32:07by teachers and principles, so I know what it's like to serve, and
- 32:10it's about public service for me. And you know, we know the greatest
- 32:15is military and clergy, but teachers are of the highest public service in my
- 32:22eyes because I was raised by them, and so public service, I'm doing
- 32:25it the way I can, whether it was journalism as a news reporter or
- 32:30as an elected official. But also public service doesn't always have to be elected
- 32:36value. Yeah, exactly right about that. But here I am ready for
- 32:39us. But I mean, again, as I said, you have remained
- 32:44engaged. I mean it's not like you just weren't doing anything for the last
- 32:46couple of years. I mean, you remain engaged in the political process and
- 32:52of voting issues and things of that nature. I think you think you're to
- 32:54be committed for that. So with all that, you know, your background
- 32:59in journalism and former Secretary of State and all this other stuff and being the
- 33:04mountaineer, Yes, why do you want to run for county Commission? Oh?
- 33:07So many different things. I mean when you start looking at what the
- 33:10County Commission does, I love the fact for economic development. I love the
- 33:15idea, you know, they are the canvassors of elections and the connections that
- 33:19are made and that are needed in the way you help people. And actually
- 33:22it was about a group of women. I was at a meeting and they
- 33:27were talking and they were like, we think we need a candidate for county
- 33:30Commission. And there was another woman there and I thought, man, she's
- 33:34going to make a great candidate, and she's going to make a great county
- 33:37commissioner. And she wasn't in the correct district. So for about six or
- 33:42eight months, people kept coming to me, please consider it, please consider
- 33:45it. And I was looking at it and I thought, you know,
- 33:49can I do this? What do I have to offer? And I felt
- 33:52that I have the energy, the enthusiasm and innovation and as you're right,
- 33:55I mean the last two years have been some ups and downs form me,
- 34:00both health wise and you know, working, working in various aspects. So
- 34:06I said, I can do this as as county commissioner. And I've been
- 34:10around the county, all over the county because I'm there anyway. You know,
- 34:16nothing is new to me here really here in the county, and people
- 34:19are like, thank you for doing this. It's time for a change.
- 34:22So what do you feel the biggest needs of the county? And let's just
- 34:24go ahead and let's uh, let's say you are elected county commissioner. On
- 34:29day one, you sat down with your legal pad because you'll already have had
- 34:31it prepared ahead of time. But let's just say, what what are you
- 34:35looking at and seeing the biggert needs of the oontem Well, I don't I
- 34:37don't think you point out one. It's all a connection. And when I
- 34:40talk about innovation, for me, it's not coming up with this great technical
- 34:45thing or this great idea that no one has done before. Here's, for
- 34:50instance, as I've been I've been around and learning about what's going on.
- 34:52I focus a lot on the eastern part of the county because there's this huge
- 34:58recreation plan that is coming that will have equestrian, hiking, biking all different
- 35:06areas. And I'm like, this is great because there's this need to not
- 35:08let people pass up Kanawha County, especially that area when they're on the way
- 35:13to Fayette County to the bridge the new National Park. So from Marmett to
- 35:19Guali Bridge, there's this great plan. Here's an idea that I have is
- 35:23that they want equestrian area. I went to so we know that. I
- 35:28went to a bridge the innovation conference last week and I met or I saw
- 35:35what this young woman had come up with, which was a tiny tack which
- 35:38is a portable tack box that you take care of horses and you raise it
- 35:43up, you put a saddle on. I'm like, wow, well,
- 35:45we want a questrian over in the eastern part of the county. I'm like,
- 35:47we can get her to be working in recreation over there. Then I
- 35:51go and meet another person, Louis Argento, who is giving away grants for
- 35:54recreation and tourism. So that's what I'll do on the first day. It's
- 35:59like I will necked with with people. I mean, we have so much
- 36:02that we have to offer. I mean I don't have to reiterate what the
- 36:06mayor and the commissioner Selango said. We're going to focus on on the sports
- 36:10complex. That's Charleston, But what about Clendenna where we have the new bike
- 36:15path. What about in Tornado where we have another bike area. What about
- 36:20the pickle courts, pickleball courts in Nitro. So all of this is what
- 36:25excites me. But we also have to focus on the housing crisis. And
- 36:30I think that is such a big opportunity. And that's an interesting point that
- 36:32you brought that up. I've had Jeroe Ellison from the man Vali and various
- 36:36other people that have talked about that. Not only you're in ganog Anty,
- 36:38but in the surrounding areas right about the housing shortage. It is a big,
- 36:43big issue here. And I just think that we have opportunities because we
- 36:45also know we have dilapidated areas. Like my thought is like when I come
- 36:51up with things, and this is where you know, when you say my
- 36:52notepad is written down, here's where I'm going to go. You know as
- 36:55I'm learning already now you're right. By the time January first, when I'm
- 37:00sworn in comes around, I'm going to know where exactly who I'm going to
- 37:05go to. But if we can take care of some of the dilapidated homes
- 37:08or help a landlord build up, then then by giving them maybe at low
- 37:15interest interest free loan they build up, that offers some housing in the area.
- 37:20It's just all has to work together. Talking with Natalie Tenant again,
- 37:24who's a Democratic candidate for Knawa County Commission, to Dave Allen showing five eighty
- 37:28Live is brought to you by Fresh Air. They'll change who's heating and cooling
- 37:30Union air filters for your home, your retail, industrial, business, restaurant,
- 37:34church, and they offer twenty four hour emergency service to visits. Their
- 37:37website is fresh Air Filters dot us or call three zero four for four zero
- 37:42one one zero four because everyone deserves fresh air. Natalie, we have a
- 37:45few people running for County Commission on the Republican side. On the Democratic side,
- 37:49of course, you are facing off in the primary against longtime Commissioner Carper.
- 37:53He's been in that office, as I said, for a long time.
- 37:57Talk about facing someone who has been in office like that for a long
- 38:00time. Well, I mean it is an interesting aspect. And I know
- 38:05Commissioner Karper. I love his family. My daughter grew up around his grandsons,
- 38:09and his children are wonderful. And I've worked with him on many occasions
- 38:15in the Secretary of State's office, so I know the work that he's done.
- 38:21I think it's time to pass the torch. It's time to say,
- 38:23Natalie, I've done this. I've said a great foundation. You move forward
- 38:28and move it on with some of these things that we're talking about. And
- 38:31I would bring a different view. Also. I talked about that group of
- 38:36women, and I don't want people to vote for me because of this.
- 38:38Can you believe that there's never been a woman county commissioner in our state's largest
- 38:44populated county. It's like we've now, It's not like we don't have women
- 38:46here. I mean we've had some great women, Martha Worley, Martha Walker,
- 38:50Kim Kannoff, Virginia King. I think of all those people, we've
- 38:53never had a woman. And so what I bring is just that diversity,
- 38:59I mean, in that inclusion. That's what that's what people would probably say
- 39:04about me as Secretary of State with a lot of the projects I did in
- 39:07the innovation that I did there and helping businesses. It's just about inclusion.
- 39:13And I offer that, you know, among the four candidates, well,
- 39:17obviously I think of the best because we're supposed to think that way. I
- 39:21mean, that's why you put your name on the ballot. And I just
- 39:23think that I've had some rough and tumbles, and I understand what it's like
- 39:30to work together and put aside any differences. You and I are sitting here,
- 39:37and I really I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. And
- 39:39I just think that I can, I can work with anyone, and you
- 39:43know of that age and understanding where I can talk about as we mentioned,
- 39:49you know you you held the office of secretary of State. What did you
- 39:53learn in that office that you think will transition to making you a good accounting
- 40:00Oh that's a that's a great question. Every day I learned something. I
- 40:05love the idea of not being the smartest person in the room, because boy
- 40:08does that get boring, Like I want I want to hear what some ideas
- 40:13are and and I've learned how to even even conduct meetings, like like,
- 40:17I'll have ideas, Like you can see how many like something pops up in
- 40:21me, like, oh, oh, I got an idea, But I
- 40:22have to learn to say, let me hear what everyone else says first,
- 40:27because I don't want you to think that it's mine because I came up with
- 40:30it. We're going to do it. That's obviously the case. The case
- 40:34there. I've learned that I've learned about inclusion, but that's always been a
- 40:37case. Really when I talk about being the youngest of seven, you always
- 40:40I mean, I just always think that there's supposed to be a lot of
- 40:44people around me, and we're all supposed to to get our part, because
- 40:45that's the way I was raised. I think that you have to be open,
- 40:52Like I use this term open and engaging government as Secretary of State.
- 40:54Now it's like it's called transparency. I'm like, oh, I just called
- 40:59it open and engaging government, and I think that you need to be held
- 41:01accountable also, So those are I mean, there's just so many things that
- 41:06I learned from that. And if you are upfront with your staff too,
- 41:10and that's what I told them first day in the secretary of State's office.
- 41:14I won't do anything. I won't knowingly make you do anything illegal, immoral
- 41:19or unethical. You know, we may have some trip ups, but we
- 41:22will we will work with that together and we will be open together. Talk
- 41:27about the campaign. How's the band? You've been out knocking doors, I
- 41:30mean, doing meet the candidates for him. You have a little bit of
- 41:32advantage because I find it hard to believe that there's anybody that doesn't know who
- 41:36you are. But there may be that those people that that don't know.
- 41:39So what's your campaign strategy been? Like? You know, the third thing
- 41:44that they know about me, it's Secretary of State. They know that I
- 41:46was the mountaineer first, then a television reporter, and then oh yeah,
- 41:50yeah, weren't you Secretary? Your obituary is gonna mention the mountaineer, you
- 41:52know that, right? Yeah, she did some other stuff too, but
- 41:57she was also the exactly exactly, So it's what's camp? Oh? I
- 42:00have been everywhere, and I'll go to I'll go to tough situations like you
- 42:05know, it was joyous on Wednesday in Clendenen when they cut the ribbon for
- 42:10the bike trail. Then I went to Allen Creek where folks are trying to
- 42:15recover from a tornado and flooding, and it was an opportunity for them to
- 42:21see about ten different agencies or organizations that would help them and go in there.
- 42:25And I went in there and I'm like, where do you all think
- 42:28that you need to be and what I want to tell folks, And I'm
- 42:30going to put on my social media if you've been impacted, please fill out
- 42:35the survey that they have and I'll ask you to put it on your website
- 42:38and all your social media because when you fill out that survey, it tells
- 42:43it lets Feds State know how many people were impacted and how much money we
- 42:47might be able to be eligible for. So the more people to do it,
- 42:51that was what I took it from that, the more who fill it
- 42:53out, the more opportunities we have for help. And that meeting was held
- 42:57a couple of nights ago, and I understand that you were in attendance the
- 43:00one And what was your takeaway from there? I mean, because you'll be
- 43:02doing I mean hope, I want to say you'll be doing a lot of
- 43:06that. If act, I'm hoping that you're not doing a whole lot of
- 43:07that, because hopefully we don't have that. But but where would you take
- 43:10away? See, and here's my other thing too. Okay, So my
- 43:14takeaway was they were so happy to be there, like you worry that,
- 43:16Oh, are you going as a candidate or are you going as a helper?
- 43:20Well, I'm just I'm just a regular person. And they were like,
- 43:23thank you so much for being here. You know. CW. Sigmum
- 43:27was there, but there was really anybody else from the county, although Deputy
- 43:31Sheriff Crawford was there. But I took away. I took away that that
- 43:37people just need to be able to talk and I was trying to lead them
- 43:39where they think they need to go. Second, here's my other idea.
- 43:44I like went up there. I went to Erica Mandy with Red Cross.
- 43:46I'm like, Erica, why in the summertime, when it hasn't rained for
- 43:51about three weeks or a month, why aren't we digging out these these creeks
- 43:54and opening them up so come a flood in the spring, they're not being
- 44:00flooded. So that's all we need to do. We need to have that
- 44:02vision, and we need to clean out callverts when it's not raining and when
- 44:06it's not not when it's too late. So that's what I took away too.
- 44:08And I'll tell you, you know, the person I see most on
- 44:13the campaign trail is not is not my opponent in the primary, but Chris
- 44:15Walter's in the perhaps in the general. I don't know. He had this
- 44:20idea of allowing the county to borrow the equipment, to allowing the cities to
- 44:24borrow county equipment to clean out things. And I'm like, okay, I'm
- 44:28stealing that, and I'll show and I'll give credit. I told you I'm
- 44:31of the age and the maturity where we spread it all around. All right,
- 44:37give me your social media website. What do you got to Natalie Tennant
- 44:39website is Friends of Natalie Tenant dot com. Look for Natalie ten I've got
- 44:45a couple of them on Facebook and Instagram. I'm on Twitter, I'm on

- 44:52in different areas, but sometimes it gets hard. I mean the final thirty,
- 44:55which I know is hard sometimes for people like us. But give me
- 44:59the final thirty. It's time. Why should someone vote for Natalie Tenant for
- 45:01Kannaw County Commissioner. I'm asking people to vote for me. Because one it
- 45:05is time for a change, not from what I say, but what I
- 45:07hear others say. And remember I was recruited. I will bring my energy,
- 45:14my enthusiasm, my ideas and innovation. And I ask people to come

- 49:37you. Now, Hi Margaret, how are you? How are you doing?
- 49:39How you doing? So? What is your role in all this?
- 49:42Sir? Well, Dave, I am just not much actually really, so

- 50:21me, very mature adult like me. And who are your models? Who
- 50:24will be doing the mindling? You're asking all the hard questions, just asking
- 50:30Each of the vendors has signed up their own models, but we have we
- 50:35have four other teams that are participating and dancing with the Stars for the United
- 50:38Way of Central West Virginia, and we have each of those persons will all
- 50:43be modeling and during the event and promoting themselves as well. It's kind of
- 50:49a list of who's who of Charleston will be walking that runway. So yeah,
- 50:52some pretty good names. Yeah. Well, And to vote for Team
- 50:55six, which is me and Brent, all you have to do is text
- 50:59dance six two seven to one seven seven seven. Now this is just one

- 51:07I get hammered by the other teams, want to say, I'll make time
- 51:08available for any of the teams that want to come out here, because I
- 51:10know I'm going to catch crap, you know, for somebody stuff. I
