- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:04the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:15together to talk cards. Hey buddy, another week down.
- 0:22We mixed things up. We changed our release day.
- 0:26How are you? I'm good.
- 0:28I am not passionate about being passionate though, really.
- 0:32I know, I know somebody who is. I do know someone who is as
- 0:36well. Every time I look in the mirror,
- 0:38I see him. I am.
- 0:41I love people that are passionate about things.
- 0:45Oh yeah? Well, how's that different than
- 0:48being passionate about being passionate?
- 0:51I'm just teasing you. I was.
- 0:53I was listening to your video yesterday while I was shaving my
- 0:56head last night. I do that.
- 0:58I do that. Yeah.
- 0:59And you said you were talking. I'm passionate about this and
- 1:04I'm passionate about that. I'm passionate about being
- 1:07passionate. And I burst out laughing.
- 1:10It was really funny. Oh, well, I I mean, you're
- 1:13welcome. Yeah.
- 1:15And I mean, since we talked last, I was on a plane, I had a
- 1:20flight get cancelled. I had another flight home.
- 1:23I, I, I spent several days with some of our favorite people in
- 1:28the community. Lot of time with Jeremy Lee, Joe
- 1:32Perot. Look at me and see it now I'm
- 1:34naming names and now I'm going to screw myself.
- 1:36So I'll just stop right there. Those of you that know that I
- 1:40hung out with you. I had a blast hanging out with
- 1:42you because otherwise I'll not say someone and then I won't be
- 1:45able to sleep tonight because that's the way I'm wired.
- 1:47But that show was fun. We had fun.
- 1:51Yeah, I would love to go. I hate flying to California.
- 1:56It's so long for me. It's just look at the beginning
- 2:00of the intro to our video. It's such a long flight.
- 2:04And I would go. I would go for you, Greg.
- 2:09Well, something I would think about for the future.
- 2:11I would go to see Tony. I would go to see Jeremy Lee.
- 2:14I like Mike Petty. I think Mike Petty is a friggin
- 2:17riot. But so I guess strong
- 2:24dependence. I I think that's what we're
- 2:25calling it now. I.
- 2:26Don't know. Some people call it
- 2:27Independenceville. I like strong dependence.
- 2:32There's kind of this movement I've heard behind the scenes of
- 2:35people saying since Strongsville changed this year, maybe we'll
- 2:39do a different show every year, where this year it's Strong
- 2:44Dependents, next year it's the Philly show, then you go to the
- 2:47Dallas Card Show, and then you kind of get this variety of
- 2:50shows and variety of areas and variety of foods.
- 2:53Quite frankly, that's one of my favorite things about traveling
- 2:56is getting the local fare. Yeah, I mean, I'm open to a lot.
- 3:04The part of my problem is that the the national, I want to
- 3:09bring a budget to the national. And right now Strongsville is,
- 3:13you know, three months before it.
- 3:15So if I do any sort of damage there, then it really dives into
- 3:20my national budget. And then, you know, this show in
- 3:24Ontario is in February every year, early February.
- 3:28And it's sort of like you could go February and then late July
- 3:32is kind of like a good spacing. But I love hanging out with,
- 3:38there's so many people I love hanging out with.
- 3:41And I'm not a social person. I mean, I, I never go out with
- 3:44friends ever. So what I do is I'll just go,
- 3:47OK, this weekend is friend weekend.
- 3:49And then I do that and then I come home and then I'm, I'm a
- 3:53hermit again. So I'm open to a lot of things,
- 4:00but but getting on a plane more than twice a year is probably
- 4:05not something I'll do every year like I'm going to be doing this
- 4:09year. I have not quite booked my
- 4:13national flight yet. I am.
- 4:16I was looking today. I almost What days are you going
- 4:20to go to the National? You know, I might go longer this
- 4:23year. I think last year I was like
- 4:25Wednesday to Saturday maybe and I might add an extra day this
- 4:30year because I felt in, in the first year I went, the second
- 4:37year I went, the first year I flew, I was there too long and
- 4:42it was I think Wednesday to Sunday.
- 4:45But I also didn't know many people.
- 4:46I didn't, I wasn't invited to anything.
- 4:48And so I felt like it was just, you know, the show, too much of
- 4:52the show. But then this past year I got
- 4:54invited to a lot of stuff and felt like it it was too much for
- 4:59the short time I was there. And I might I might add a day
- 5:03this year. I'm kind of in the same place
- 5:07except I might add a day and a half because I was looking at
- 5:11flights and if I fly in Wednesday I get in too late.
- 5:17So I think it might be better if I fly in Tuesday night and then
- 5:24I want to be there when some of my friends are going to be
- 5:26there. And there are some people that
- 5:27are only there on the weekend. It's like last year my buddy
- 5:30Dave was there on the weekend and I, I didn't even get to see
- 5:35him. You know, I don't know.
- 5:39I don't know what I'm going to do I, I, I don't know, I'm
- 5:41probably going to go Wednesday to Sunday and leave Sunday
- 5:45morning is probably what I'm going to end up doing.
- 5:47Ask some of my buddies and some of my other buddies and and they
- 5:51were saying kind of basically what you just said.
- 5:53So maybe I just bite the I mean, it's not like I have work that
- 5:56time of year. I'm just, I'm off.
- 6:00So but I like being home. Like I really like being home
- 6:04and I really get in my own bed and I like my shower.
- 6:08I don't like other people's showers.
- 6:09I like, you know, it's I'm a disaster.
- 6:12You don't want to know the things that that are always
- 6:17working through my mind. Greg, I have, and I think
- 6:19Dustin, not Dustin. Oh man, Dylan's going to be so
- 6:23mad at me. I think Dylan has talked about
- 6:27how much anxiety he gets leaving home, and I'm the same way.
- 6:30I'm probably not to the same extent based on how he described
- 6:33his, but I don't. I don't want to go out.
- 6:36I don't want to be away from home.
- 6:38I love being home and I do. I'm a lunch guy, so when I'm
- 6:43getting together with friends, it's for lunch.
- 6:45It's always lunch. I'm very comfortable doing
- 6:47lunch. We do lunch, lunch once a month.
- 6:51That's the three guys I'm closest with.
- 6:53And then my friend Jeremy from childhood, we get together, he
- 6:56lives 2 1/2 hours away from me. So we get together once every, I
- 6:59don't know, three months or so for lunch.
- 7:01Like we're getting together on Saturday for, for ramen at a
- 7:04ramen bar. But yeah, I, I feel the same
- 7:10way. My, my wife doesn't like it when
- 7:12I leave. My 16 year old doesn't like it
- 7:14when I leave. So I don't travel much because I
- 7:17feel the same way. Dylan, by the way, I mean, I got
- 7:22to hang out with Dylan. You know, he came out because
- 7:24he's from the LA area. And so he came out to this, this
- 7:28show this last weekend. Man, that guy is got energy.
- 7:33He's he's a little dude and he's full of life.
- 7:37And he says he messages me when he gets home and he goes, yeah,
- 7:41man, it was nice finally meeting you in person.
- 7:43I'm like Dylan, we hung out for like 3 days at the Cleveland
- 7:47National. Like what are you talking about?
- 7:48But that shows you how memorable I am.
- 7:51By the way, if we, if we can just rave about Dylan for a
- 7:54minute, everybody there's, there are a lot of people that are
- 7:57pretty polarizing in the, in this, this community, right?
- 8:01There's nobody is liked by everybody except Dylan.
- 8:05There's very few people that everybody likes, but who who
- 8:10could not like Dylan? I don't know.
- 8:14I mean, well, you could say that about Orlando.
- 8:18True Orlando. So there's Orlando and and I'm
- 8:22I'm starting to find out that I'm not as well liked as I
- 8:25thought I was. But here we go.
- 8:28No, no, it's fine. It's I know.
- 8:30Yes, I, I think that Dylan is very likable and Orlando is as
- 8:37likable as anyone I've ever met. But yes, you're right.
- 8:41I think the majority of people have something about them that
- 8:47is polarizing to a certain degree to at least some of the
- 8:50community. And there are, if I'm being
- 8:52honest, there are, there are things about me that that I
- 8:58could see people not liking and, and we don't have to talk about
- 9:03this here, but there are, there are no, I'm serious.
- 9:05There are some specific things about my channel that I could
- 9:10see would be a turn off for certain people.
- 9:12Like it's not so. It's one of my favorites and
- 9:15you're one of my favorite people, Greg.
- 9:16I appreciate it. I like you very much too.
- 9:18I mean, you're OK. You're OK.
- 9:20Thanks. But yeah, Dylan got some cool
- 9:22stuff. He showed it for the first time
- 9:24already on his channel. He got a really cool.
- 9:27I have used. Kahanamoku card, which is super
- 9:31rare. Surfer.
- 9:32Surfer, right? Yeah.
- 9:33He's like the godfather of surfing.
- 9:36Really Hawaiian. He won an Olympic medal in
- 9:40swimming and is like a legendary surfer from Hawaii.
- 9:47And it was funny because you know Rick of Rick's vintage
- 9:51oddball cards, who knows as much about any of all the sets of
- 9:56anybody I have ever met him. I mean, him and Mangini know so
- 10:00much. I was sitting next to Rick at
- 10:02the show and he looks into the case and he goes, that card
- 10:06right there, there's not more than a handful of copies of that
- 10:10in existence. And I'm like, I never even heard
- 10:12of it. I've never, I, I don't even know
- 10:14what that is, you know? And so Dylan bought this Duke
- 10:17card and he showed it to Rick at dinner.
- 10:22We had this big dinner, like 20 guys were hanging out.
- 10:25And Rick goes, what's that from? I've, I've never seen that set.
- 10:30Dylan's like, oh, it's a bunch of different sports.
- 10:32It's not just surfing. It's like, and Rick, so Rick
- 10:35literally sat there on his phone for like an hour, like
- 10:38researching the set, 'cause he's like, this is a set I don't know
- 10:41of, I need to learn about it. And it was, it was pretty cool.
- 10:43But yeah, so enough about that. All right, now you had a topic
- 10:50and then I have a couple. We'll see what we all get to.
- 10:55So your topic, why don't you first present your topic and and
- 10:59cuz you mentioned it to me about 5 minutes ago and I immediately
- 11:03had an answer. So go ahead.
- 11:06OK, so this morning before work, I woke up bright and early like
- 11:10I like to, and I listen to you and Darren return to collecting
- 11:14on the Return to Collecting channel.
- 11:15By the way, I didn't watch it on yours interview Garrett from
- 11:20ballpark memories and I'm a I'm a big Garrett fan.
- 11:22I bought a Clemente rookie off of Garrett at the National last
- 11:25year. And, and I hate calling him a
- 11:27kid 'cause he's 23, but he's, he's a kid relative to us.
- 11:31And he seems like a really good kid.
- 11:34And he's, he knows so much about cards and he deals almost
- 11:40exclusively in vintage. And as I sit in there listening
- 11:44to him, really just kind of like volleying your questions back
- 11:49and you were asking him really good questions, you and Darren,
- 11:52I was like, man, I've always thought to be a good dealer, you
- 11:56need to know a lot about sports, the sports that you're a dealer
- 12:00of the history of those sports. And I don't know that Garrett
- 12:03does. And I've, I'm now convinced that
- 12:05you don't need to in Garrett's case.
- 12:09And I'm not saying, again, I'm not saying he doesn't know about
- 12:12the sport, but it feels like he can get away with knowing a lot
- 12:17about which players sell and just if he's flipping them for
- 12:22low profit. And I don't know that he is.
- 12:24Again, I'm just this got me thinking like if he buys a card
- 12:27for $800 and he sells it for 840 really quickly, he can do that a
- 12:32lot and make a lot of money. And it, it just made me think,
- 12:37what does it take to be a good dealer?
- 12:39I'm I'm curious for your thoughts.
- 12:42I think you you just touched on at least a piece of it and and I
- 12:47think if you think about any reseller, what makes any
- 12:52reseller not just cards cars even what makes this used car
- 13:00dealership better than this used car dealership?
- 13:03Now, obviously they've got to have a personality.
- 13:05They need to be likable. That kind of goes without,
- 13:08right? That all has goes without
- 13:09saying. I think the core thing that
- 13:14makes a good dealer is thin margins.
- 13:19Because if you have a thin margin, that means your price is
- 13:23priced to sell, it's not priced to sit, and it means that you're
- 13:28paying up for good inventory, which means you're going to get
- 13:32good inventory because you're a place that people want to sell.
- 13:37This is such a great answer. If you say I just, I'm just
- 13:40trying to get a 510% margin, then people are going to want to
- 13:44sell to you because you pay up and people are going to buy from
- 13:47you because you're not overpriced.
- 13:49And so I think Garrett is pretty good at that.
- 13:52Now, Garrett also did share a few examples, however, about
- 13:56times where there was a card where he paid way over comp
- 14:00because the card was worthy of paying way over comp.
- 14:03And then he charged way over comp because he also understands
- 14:08that buying a forever copy of a card is worth paying up for.
- 14:14And and he knows when he sees a card in a case, it's a forever
- 14:18copy, he'll pay really strong on it because it means that he's
- 14:23going to be able to get a good amount for it.
- 14:25But thin margins just like you know, CarMax, I don't know if
- 14:29they have CarMax in Maine, but they basically pay more than
- 14:33other dealerships to buy your car and they have a non
- 14:37negotiable price, which is usually pretty strong when you
- 14:40when you're on the sticker when you're looking for the car.
- 14:43And so they're just doing volume.
- 14:46The volume dealers who are thin margins, I think those are the
- 14:50guys that are doing that, that are the best dealers.
- 14:53Yeah, the I appeal movement will destroy the comps movement.
- 14:58It's not even going to be close. I will gladly pay.
- 15:01Up to three years ago, I was saying I don't want to pay over
- 15:04comps. But I've had a bit of a
- 15:07revelation that if you want the card, the best copy of the card,
- 15:13specially in vintage, really almost exclusively in vintage,
- 15:17you have to pay over comps for it.
- 15:19And if you don't, then you're going to get left behind.
- 15:22And you know, you think about there are a lot of dealers out
- 15:24there, thousands of dealers out there.
- 15:27I mean, you and I both are, have seen them at shows where they
- 15:31bought a card for $800 like I mentioned, and they thought,
- 15:34they think to themselves, I'm going to buy it for 800.
- 15:37I think I can get 1200 for this. And then people come along and
- 15:40they offer them 1000. People offer them 1100.
- 15:42And they say no because they're locked into what they think they
- 15:45can get for it. And instead of selling it at
- 15:47this nice 2025% profit, they're rejecting the quick profit.
- 15:54And then it sits and it sits and it collects dust.
- 15:58And now all of a sudden they've got this piece of inventory that
- 16:01they can't sell because they've they will not sell it for lower.
- 16:06And when you're smart, you'll take that small profit because
- 16:11somebody wants it quickly. Yeah, and and it's also fresh
- 16:17money to buy fresh stuff and and new inventory.
- 16:23I mean, you know, their dealers were like you look in their case
- 16:27and I don't want to name any in particular, but there are some
- 16:31dealers where I, I went to Strongsville and I looked
- 16:33through their cases and then I went to their cases at the
- 16:36National and 90% of it was the same stuff.
- 16:40And you're like, I mean, OK, you know, but have you thought that
- 16:44maybe why is that happening? You know, fresh inventory is
- 16:50key. It's like, so I was really
- 16:52disappointed. I went to the Burbank card shop
- 16:55in their previous location to the one they're in now, and they
- 16:58had what I thought was brilliant, which was every day
- 17:02of the week they had a case. So they had the Monday inventory
- 17:07buys case, Tuesday inventory buys case, Wednesday, Thursday
- 17:13first said 7 cases. And that day of the week they
- 17:17would, they would put all the new inventory in there and then
- 17:20they'd take all the stuff that hadn't sold over the previous
- 17:23six days and it went into the regular cases.
- 17:26And so whenever anybody came in the shop, the 1st place they
- 17:29went were since the last time they had been to the shop, those
- 17:33cases 'cause that was new inventory.
- 17:35I thought it was brilliant. And then I went into the the new
- 17:38location and they they aren't doing that.
- 17:40And I'm like, that was such a smart move because what it does
- 17:44is it gets people to come in frequently to your shop to see
- 17:48what the new stuff is. And when Garrett and Ash and
- 17:52these guys are posting pictures of their new pickups, it, it
- 17:57keeps you, oh, I got to refresh, refresh, refresh, refresh
- 18:01because you don't want to miss the new pick up.
- 18:02It's the same thing with your saved searches on eBay.
- 18:05And so fresh inventory, I think is vital.
- 18:10Yeah, another great, another guy who does this very, very well is
- 18:13Matt from Providence. And both of these guys,
- 18:16interestingly, are fairly new dealers, you know, last four or
- 18:19five years dealers and they study the industry, they study
- 18:23the market and they're not constrained by old thinking.
- 18:29Set in their ways, that's what you're trying to say.
- 18:31Set in their ways, Sure. There are some dealers at the
- 18:34National very, very set in their ways, right and.
- 18:38They're grandfathered in, which is in my opinion that's a
- 18:41mistake of the National to just let the same guys come every
- 18:45single year. There should be a how much, how
- 18:47much inventory did you turn over kind of metric that and I it
- 18:53would be impossible for them to prove it, of course, and it
- 18:55would never work, but there's got to be something that they
- 18:57can do. I don't know.
- 18:59The concern is, as a vintage collector is that that might
- 19:04kill off vintage at the National.
- 19:07It's the stuff that's just turning and turning and turning.
- 19:10I mean, and that you know, I, I didn't have super high
- 19:14expectations for this Ontario show, this West Coast card show,
- 19:17I was expecting it to be almost all modern and a lot of Pokémon.
- 19:21There was not a lot of Pokémon. There was maybe, maybe 10% of
- 19:28the tables were exclusively Pokémon, and then a few had a
- 19:31smattering. It was.
- 19:33Yeah, and, and I would say maybe 25% of the tables were vintage
- 19:41or had a good amount of vintage. And yeah.
- 19:45And, and it was also cool because these aren't guys I'd
- 19:48ever seen their inventory before.
- 19:49They're not guys that go to the National or Strongsville.
- 19:52They're, you know, they're Southwest guys and they don't go
- 19:55to the National stuff. And so it was my first time
- 19:58seeing some of their inventory. And I'm just like, these guys
- 20:01have some really good stuff. It was, it was just cool because
- 20:05I felt like. It's like the first time you
- 20:07play a golf course and you're like, oh, what's the next hole
- 20:09going to look like? Because you've never played it.
- 20:11You don't know what it's like. You know, it's like, it's like
- 20:14every turn, every time you, you step on a tee, you're you're
- 20:17excited to see what is ahead. That's what it felt like at a
- 20:21show where you've never seen these dealers before.
- 20:23It's very. Cool.
- 20:24Yeah, that's great. Anything that we're missing on
- 20:29what makes a good dealer? And then I have a a slight
- 20:33follow up question in the same vein when you're after you
- 20:36respond to that. Well, I, I think I know what the
- 20:41question is. You don't.
- 20:43OK, Well, a good dealer would be some also Chris Sewell who
- 20:48sponsors surface issues, the best dealer in my opinion that's
- 20:52out there. He will buy your collection or
- 20:55parts of your collection and give you a very, very fair
- 20:58percentage of the value and he will explain to you how he gets
- 21:01to it. You can reach out to Chris at
- 21:04sewellsportscards@gmail.com. That's via e-mail.
- 21:08You can also go to our website, sportscardclubhouse.com and go
- 21:12to partners. How does that work yet?
- 21:15Partners. And then he's there and you can
- 21:17click there and, and e-mail him, go to his website.
- 21:20Chris is the best dealer out there.
- 21:21We didn't mention him as part of that because I was going to get
- 21:23to this part of it. And he is, you know, those guys
- 21:27we mentioned are amazing. Chris is #1.
- 21:32Pay again. Again, Pay strong, doesn't
- 21:35overcharge, doesn't overprice. He wants to move stuff thin
- 21:38margins. It's interesting because the the
- 21:41website that you always quote is different, or I'm sorry, the
- 21:44e-mail address that you always quote for Chris is different
- 21:48than the e-mail address that I always quote because I quote the
- 21:53one on his website, whichischris@collectorinvestordealer.com.
- 21:58Well, that works too, I'm sure. Yeah, that's interesting.
- 22:01He must have just changed it recently, but he tells me to put
- 22:05to say chrissewellsportscards@gmail.com.
- 22:10And then also at the top right here in on his page, which again
- 22:15in partners you click on learn more under Chris's picture here
- 22:19and it takes you to his website and there's a link to his eBay
- 22:23store, his Com C store, all that kind of stuff too.
- 22:26So. That's an old photo.
- 22:27The the other one is an old photo from when he was in the
- 22:30Netherlands I think. That one.
- 22:32No, the first photo you showed, I think it's in this.
- 22:36Yeah, this is off of his website.
- 22:39It looks like he's in two places at once there.
- 22:41That's very talented. Yeah.
- 22:42See, this is what he does. Yeah.
- 22:45He's he's everywhere, Yeah. Only present.
- 22:48OK, so my follow, what do you think my follow up question was?
- 22:52It was going to be a lead in to the Chris.
- 22:55Oh, OK. My question is the same question
- 22:58I asked yesterday to Garrett over on return to collecting on
- 23:02the the off Topic, which is when you enter a show, do you
- 23:07specifically have a specific dealer that you want to go to
- 23:111st or do you have, I'm just going to take this route or do
- 23:16you do a scan for a certain card?
- 23:19What? What are the 1st 30 minutes of
- 23:22the National look like for you? Well, the National is very
- 23:25different. Let's let's go to Shriners for a
- 23:27second. Shriners is a big regional show
- 23:29in just north of Boston that I go to and I love it.
- 23:33It's there's a lot of vintage, a lot of really good dealers.
- 23:37First person I go to now, the last two times I've been there
- 23:41is Matt from Providence. He's got banger upon banger upon
- 23:46banger. And it was easy this year 'cause
- 23:47he was right in the entryway, but the last time or two he was
- 23:52way in the back, kind of in the middle.
- 23:53So it was, you know, you to get to him first, I had to skip over
- 23:57a lot of other good dealers. But then I also go to PB
- 24:00Collectibles, which is Paul Borges out of Newport, RI, who
- 24:04has the best shop in New England, in my opinion, which
- 24:07I'm hoping to go to again this summer.
- 24:09And then I'll go to Don's Sports Card Center from Portland, ME.
- 24:13And then I'll make my way around at the National.
- 24:16I don't know where I'm going at any point in the National, as
- 24:19you probably learned, as we did, that search for the, excuse me,
- 24:23the the rapper together. I have.
- 24:25There's never a point in time when I'm at the National I.
- 24:29Was rapping. Yeah, there's never a point in
- 24:32time at the National where I know where I am.
- 24:36Really, I'm very directionally oriented, I believe.
- 24:40I'm not. I'm the opposite.
- 24:41I'm very directionally challenged.
- 24:43I used to before Google Maps, I would call my dad and I would
- 24:47say, hey, I'm at this place. I just passed a a Home Depot.
- 24:51How do I get to 9595 is the main road from here and he would
- 24:56laugh at me every time for years he would laugh and he'd be like,
- 24:58hey, do this and do that. I would have no idea.
- 25:00And I still I use Google Maps going places.
- 25:02I've been dozens of times. I'm kind of a freak in a certain
- 25:08way where I'm, it's just something that I'm, I'm good at.
- 25:12I, I'm, it's hard for me to say that I'm good at something
- 25:15though. But all right, here is my
- 25:18question for you. So this came up today.
- 25:20Well, I came up yesterday and then it carried over to today.
- 25:23Well, what's your answer to that question?
- 25:25What was the question? I forgot where do I go first?
- 25:29Yeah. I kind of run around like my
- 25:34hair's on fire. There are a few dealers that I
- 25:41really like their inventory and I know that their prices aren't
- 25:46crazy and so I do tend to want to go to those particular
- 25:50dealers first. I really like Tim Paine.
- 25:54Is that where we had the the Ty Cobb T2O6 that we both wanted?
- 26:00See the guy? No, no, that's Geller.
- 26:06Andy. Andy Geller.
- 26:08But do you remember that situation, though, where you
- 26:11were like you were describing where it was and you asked me
- 26:13where mine was and I was like, yeah, I have no idea where mine
- 26:15was. Yeah, I do remember that.
- 26:17Right, that's me. Once I've left a table, if I've
- 26:20gotten 30 feet away I will have no idea where that table was.
- 26:24So there was a card, there was a card at the show this last week
- 26:27and that I was really close to. I mean, I, I now regret not
- 26:30buying it. OK.
- 26:32And I was really close to it. And I go, I'm not going to
- 26:34remember where this is. So I literally turned to my
- 26:37right, took a picture, turned to my right again, took a picture,
- 26:40turn to my right again, took a picture, and then took a picture
- 26:42of the booth. And then I was like, well, I
- 26:44could be able to triangulate where this is based on these
- 26:48photos. So Tim, Tim Paine I like a lot.
- 26:53I like Ash a lot. I like Stan.
- 26:56Stan's prices can be a little rough.
- 27:00You know, I like Chapel stuff. But sometimes his prices, well,
- 27:05his prices have been fair to you.
- 27:06I don't know. I don't, I don't know what I do.
- 27:09That's why I like Strongsville is because everything's right
- 27:11there. Yeah, that's why I like Shriners
- 27:14because it's all super easy. You walk in, it's one huge room.
- 27:18Just like the National two years ago was really easy for me
- 27:21because it was 2 huge rooms and one of the rooms was the
- 27:26corporate stuff and one of them was the tables.
- 27:29But at at Shriners, you walk in, it's one huge rum and it's just
- 27:32row upon row, row. One room.
- 27:36One row, one rum. One rum, Yeah.
- 27:38That's right. You call them rums and I call
- 27:40them rooms. So, OK, so this happened.
- 27:45I was looking at Garrett's website
- 27:46yesterdayballparkmemories.com and, and I can even pull the
- 27:50card up real quick. In fact, I'm going to do that.
- 27:53I'm going to pull the card up because I think it will help me
- 27:57with explaining this a little bit a little bit better.
- 28:02All right, watch it Here comes it.
- 28:03So if you are listening at home, you are missing out.
- 28:06If you are watching, you are seeing what I'm looking at.
- 28:09OK, so we've got this this K this page front page on his
- 28:14website, just awesome stuff. He's got some cracker Jacks and
- 28:18caramel cards and stuff. And I look at these cards right
- 28:22here and I look at this red roof and I say, man, it's a beautiful
- 28:30red Ruth card. It's in a 1.5.
- 28:33It's got a great front to it. That card should be more than
- 28:38$9800. I'm like, what am I missing?
- 28:41So then I look at the back and I'll, I'll click on it.
- 28:45So then I look at the, I look at go, this is beautiful card.
- 28:49And then I look at the back and I go, OK, it's, it's definitely
- 28:53got either, I don't know if that's paste that's there looks
- 28:57kind of like paste to me or if it's an eraser or something.
- 29:01But again, it's back damage. So who really cares?
- 29:05This is a gorgeous card. And I'm like, why?
- 29:08Why is it so cheap? What am I missing?
- 29:12I'm missing something. It's 9800 bucks.
- 29:14That should be like a, a $13,000 card.
- 29:19And then I go, oh, it's a worldwide gum.
- 29:23It's not a Goudy. OK, so that's the reason.
- 29:28But then I, I, I started thinking about, I'm like, but
- 29:32worldwide gums are much rarer than Goudy's.
- 29:36It's just the. Canadian version, it's less
- 29:39iconic. So you've it's sort of like the
- 29:42O peachy versus the tops. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but
- 29:48don't O peachy usually sell for a little bit more than tops.
- 29:53Because they're rarer, yes, but it's also a more well known
- 29:56brand. It is interesting to me that
- 30:03this rarer copy of the identical image would be, I mean, it, it,
- 30:11it's sort of like, OK, what's a more well known brand, Drum or
- 30:16Piedmont? It's the Piedmont is a more well
- 30:20known brand, but the drum is much rarer.
- 30:23So it's way more expensive, way more expensive than a Piedmont.
- 30:28And so to me, the front is the same, just like AT2O6, but it
- 30:33was printed in a different location just like AT2O6.
- 30:37And it's a rarer copy like a drum versus a Piedmont.
- 30:40So I'm like, why in the heck now?
- 30:42Now, I also have to say that when I was a kid growing up, the
- 30:46Opecchi were far less desirable than the tops.
- 30:51They were cheaper by maybe 70% of the value of the tops, just
- 30:57like these worldwide gums sell for about 75 to 85% of the cost
- 31:03of the Gaudi, even though they're significantly rarer.
- 31:07So my question is, what do you think about that?
- 31:14I, I want to say it wouldn't matter to me, but I think it
- 31:19would because Gaudi is a more desirable brand.
- 31:22It's a more well known brand, It's a, it's a more iconic
- 31:26brand. The the Gaudi 33 Gaudi is one of
- 31:29the greatest sets of all time, and Worldwide Gum doesn't have
- 31:35that same cache. But but if if if there were two
- 31:4268 tops Nolan Ryans sitting side by side and 1 was a tops or 68
- 31:52Nolan Ryans and one was a you know, Venezuelan and one was a
- 31:57tops and tops is much more iconic and widely desirable, the
- 32:03Venezuelan would be way more expensive, right?
- 32:06True, yeah, I'm just trying to come up with an answer.
- 32:08I don't actually know the answer, I'm just speculating.
- 32:11So I literally, I'm in a text group that has Adam Dillon, Theo
- 32:21and John Mangini. And I basically asked this
- 32:24question just because I wanted to hear what John Mangini said.
- 32:28In fact, I asked the question I said in parentheses this
- 32:31question is really for Mangini and he said the same reason the
- 32:37Opechee used to sell for less in the old days.
- 32:40No one wanted Canadian issues even though they were more rare.
- 32:44Plus if you were working on a 33 Gaudi set, many would want to
- 32:48stick with the Gaudi's. That could easily change once
- 32:52people catch on more. And I said so basically because
- 32:57people are stupid. And he said you got it.
- 33:01I think if I were in a text group with Mangini like that and
- 33:05somebody threw out a question about vintage, a funny gag would
- 33:09be to respond really quickly with the dumbest and most wrong
- 33:14possible answer and and just to hopefully get him riled.
- 33:18Up and get his head exploding, like you'd say, You'd say why
- 33:21the World War gun would go well, because that's a sticker, you
- 33:25know? And he would be like, no, it's
- 33:27not. What are you talking about?
- 33:30Yeah, that would be funny. Perfect.
- 33:33OK, so let me let me ask you a slightly different question.
- 33:36I'll get this off the screen now.
- 33:39OK, so let's Fast forward 10 years because with O Peachy,
- 33:44with Milton Bradley, with Venezuelans, with all these
- 33:47other things, the the drum back, you know, the American beauty
- 33:51back versus the sweet cat back. It it seems like there's been
- 33:56this domino of everything when it's rarer but the same but
- 34:01rarer. It seems like the rarer has been
- 34:07passing up the value of the more frequently, you know, frequent
- 34:13examples. There's let's Fast forward 10
- 34:16years. Do you think it's possible or do
- 34:19you think it's likely that the worldwide gum will be worth more
- 34:22than the Gowdy's? There's one way to find out
- 34:25Greg. It's for you to buy that one.
- 34:26Offer him like 9200 and in 10 years it could be worth $30,000.
- 34:32When the Gaudi is worth 20, I think you should do it.
- 34:38I mean, I'm not going to lie if if he still has that at
- 34:41Strongsville, I'm going to give it a good look.
- 34:45Wow. I'm serious.
- 34:48I'm going to give it a if that example.
- 34:50Now I I'm in a place in my life where I can't buy a nine or
- 34:56$10,000 card. Without running by your wife.
- 35:03I can't buy a nine or $10,000 card unless I'm holding it in my
- 35:07hand. I just can't.
- 35:09That's have. You Have you ever bought a nine
- 35:11or $10,000 card? The most expensive card I've
- 35:14ever bought was at last year's National my my Red Cob and it
- 35:19was $5000. Can you see increasing that by
- 35:2480%? Like the most I've ever spent on
- 35:26a car was 1100 and I can't see going to, I guess I could see
- 35:32going to 1900. OK, I'm with you.
- 35:36Yes, I I think I absolutely could see myself at Strongsville
- 35:42buying a $10,000 card. I really do.
- 35:46I could see it. Wow, I could see it.
- 35:50By the way, I. Mean it has to be the right card
- 35:51and it has to be the right thing.
- 35:53Yeah. But that card, that card I would
- 35:58be interested in. Now let's say, let's Fast
- 36:01forward like you say, one year and that card has taken off, as
- 36:05we've seen a lot of cards do, and all of a sudden it's worth
- 36:08$14,000 one year after you bought it.
- 36:12Would you sell it? $14,000 in added value.
- 36:19No. Oh, I went to 14,000.
- 36:22Yeah. Well, I have had times even
- 36:25recently where I bought a card and it became worth so much more
- 36:31that I had to sell it. So I, I, I wouldn't, but then
- 36:38they weren't forever cards. They weren't like owning a Babe
- 36:42Ruth card. So I don't know.
- 36:47I mean, it's sort of like our buddy, you know, Adam the the
- 36:51the third a leg on the stool of the sports card clubhouse, the.
- 36:56Most important, like. By far and the best looking one
- 37:02the the he bought that PSA 1081 tops Larry Bird.
- 37:09And then during the peak it went to like $40,000 and he's like, I
- 37:15like this card, but it's $40,000.
- 37:18So he sold it about a 52 mantle. I mean, what are we doing?
- 37:25So everything is always for sale at a certain price outside of
- 37:31just a couple of things. I, I, it would, it would be like
- 37:36ripping my heart out. So if it went from 10,000 to
- 37:4114,000 that, that I don't think that would be enough to pry it
- 37:45away from me. But if it went from 10,000 to
- 37:4820,000, maybe. OK, here's another question for
- 37:54you. This is going to be fun for you.
- 37:55It's just this is an, this is a, an audible here.
- 38:02We've got 2 cards side by side here.
- 38:04OK, these two, let's look at the middle 2.
- 38:08They're both PSA twos. They both have similar serial
- 38:11numbers, OK, between those two cards, they're both beautiful,
- 38:17by the way. I would, I, I mean, again, if
- 38:21those cards were in Strongsville, I would consider
- 38:23buying one of those too. These two cards, which one
- 38:26here's the back of the right and the back of the left.
- 38:31Which of these two would you rather have?
- 38:39I would go with the right because the centering is better.
- 38:44I would have to see them in hand because the left has much better
- 38:47coloring, but that is less important to me than the
- 38:53centering. 'Cause you put.
- 38:55You put the one on the right without the one on the left, and
- 38:58you can't tell as easily that the coloring isn't as good, but
- 39:01you can always tell that centering is bad.
- 39:04Because this is I mean, this I literally stumbled across as
- 39:07showing you the Ruth, but I'm like, it's the same card with
- 39:11the same grade with the same serial number era with the same
- 39:15price on the same website. They're very they have so much
- 39:20in common, but they are definitely distinctly different
- 39:23cards. And I could see a lot of people
- 39:25going, Oh, that yellow on the left.
- 39:27Yeah, for sure. And there's.
- 39:28No, wrong. The one on the right looks kind
- 39:31of a little bit more like pea soup, right?
- 39:33It's almost like a green. There's no raw back.
- 39:36The back on the right is super clean.
- 39:39I. Mean this is a beautiful this is
- 39:40a wonderful podcast episode where we're looking at an image
- 39:44and talking about it as nobody can see it.
- 39:47And then on the left, there's some staining on the back, but
- 39:51the color is better. So the person who's into
- 39:55centering and is into no staining would probably go to
- 39:59the right, but the person who's into the bright color would
- 40:03probably go to the left. Yeah.
- 40:06I think so. I think I would take the one on
- 40:08the right as well though. Yeah, it's it's tough.
- 40:15So I bought a card off Leighton Sheldon at the National last
- 40:18year. It was a Steph Curry 2009 tops
- 40:22rookie card, not Chrome, just the tops.
- 40:25I paid 8. 100 gone way up. I paid $800.00 for it which is a
- 40:29lot for me. It's APSA 8 and at the time the
- 40:32comps were in the low to mid 8 hundreds and so he gave me a
- 40:36very fair price at 800 and it is now worth.
- 40:41Recent sales are all over 15101. Sold this week for I think
- 40:48$1800. In six months it is more than
- 40:53doubled in value. Do you sell?
- 40:57Yes. That card I sell because it is
- 41:00so easy to replace that card. It is so.
- 41:05And for guys who have very, very meager budgets like us, you
- 41:12know. We don't have very, very meager
- 41:16budgets I would call. OK, I do.
- 41:18No, we have a pretty. You've spent 5000.
- 41:21Yeah, that's true. We have decent budgets, but
- 41:24we're not. We're very average guys.
- 41:27Yeah, Yeah. That's a good way of putting it.
- 41:29We're average guys and we're talking about adding like $800
- 41:35cash to the war chest. That is a that is a major shot
- 41:41in the arm. So this card, the one that he
- 41:44sold me, looks like a 10. I, I don't know.
- 41:47When I look at it, I don't know why it's not a Nine or A10.
- 41:51I think if I were to put it in CIA it would sell for over
- 41:54$2000. Really.
- 41:57But I love it and it's a for me, it's a foreverish card and I
- 42:02have to put that ish at the end of it because Steph Curry's one
- 42:06of my all time favorites. It's a rookie card.
- 42:09He's one of the five greatest basketball players of all time.
- 42:13So. Did top, did you say top five?
- 42:17Yeah, and I don't think there's any reason other than the market
- 42:22coming down that that card will decline in value very much.
- 42:27He's not going to win a championship this year.
- 42:29So why has it skyrocketed so much?
- 42:31It's because it's so iconic. Now, just to make sure we're on
- 42:37the same page, because I saw the card, but it's, it's this card
- 42:41right here, right? That's the one in an 8, yeah.
- 42:44And if we look at the population on that card.
- 42:47It's high. There's like 10.
- 42:52Thousand of them that are an 8 or higher.
- 42:55I mean. Population doesn't matter when
- 43:05demand far outpaces the population.
- 43:08It matters, of course, but it's not.
- 43:10Look at the Jordan. Look how many Jordan PSA ones
- 43:15and above there are. And they still sell for
- 43:18outrageous money. Because he's globally iconic,
- 43:21and so is Steph Curry. The base card.
- 43:26Is also a very low print run year of tops.
- 43:31That's true. That's true.
- 43:36My computer's freezing. I don't know if I'm freezing,
- 43:39but oh, there we go. I just finally, finally kicked
- 43:42through. Good grief, I would sell it.
- 43:45You're asking me now I But that's stupid for me to say
- 43:48because you just said you love it.
- 43:50Should you sell something you love just to take the money?
- 43:53No, you shouldn't do that. You shouldn't sell it.
- 43:56Don't sell it. I'm not selling it.
- 43:58I was just curious what you would do and.
- 43:59Oh, I would sell. I love Curry.
- 44:02I love Steph Curry. I love Steph Curry.
- 44:08Maybe the second most popular basketball player in basketball
- 44:12history. Say that one more time.
- 44:15Maybe the second most popular, third most popular basketball
- 44:19globally in basketball history. Jordan obviously number one.
- 44:22Then you could say Kobe, maybe Curry globally.
- 44:26Curry's right there. Yeah, that would be a
- 44:31interesting conversation on on who that would be.
- 44:35I mean, you're right about Kobe I think.
- 44:38I think Shaq is pretty popular. I think Doctor J is with a
- 44:42generation above us, but not globally because the game wasn't
- 44:45global then. Is LeBron Dirk Dirk?
- 44:49Was really pot LeBron? Yeah, I don't know.
- 44:53Somebody down below will tell us that the guy we're not thinking
- 44:55of, I mean, Steph, changed the game forever and he is a Family
- 45:02Guy. He doesn't get into trouble.
- 45:04He's not a pain in the butt. He does trick shots and long
- 45:09distance shots and he does crazy.
- 45:11He's it's, he's awesome. I love him.
- 45:14I love him. I hate that he beat my Celtics
- 45:16in the Finals. Yeah.
- 45:20All right. Well, this was fun. 45 minutes
- 45:23in and we covered, I mean, just about everything as far as I can
- 45:26tell. So yeah.
- 45:28Except when you every time you said Red Ruth, I was thinking
- 45:32about the the kid from The Shining saying Rad Rose.
- 45:36Rad Rose. I never saw The Shining.
- 45:39Greg. You like horror movies and scary
- 45:42stuff? I like being happy.
- 45:45I'm happy when I watch a horror movie.
- 45:47I'm not. I'm miserable.
- 45:49I'm going. When is this going to end?
- 45:52The late the the late Dawson Leary, he he made a horror
- 45:58movie, didn't he? And the show the Dawson's Creek.
- 46:02Dawson Leary. I've never watched Dawson's
- 46:06Creek. Do you know James Bowen?
- 46:08Vanderbeek was his character's name Dawson Leary.
- 46:10Yeah, I was a big Joey Potter guy.
- 46:12Oh yeah, Joey who's? Oh, that's Jennifer.
- 46:16No Katie Holmes. Oh, oh, right, right, right,
- 46:20right, right. When I I was their age when that
- 46:23was going up and I'm like, Katie, you just need to run into
- 46:25me at the airport, you know what I'm saying?
- 46:27Did. You ever see her in the movie
- 46:28The Gift? No.
- 46:31OK. Is this bad?
- 46:34Can I tell you a story? I got to tell you a story real
- 46:37quick. This has nothing to do with
- 46:39cards. OK, Yeah.
- 46:41Is that cool? Yeah.
- 46:43So when I was like 19, I went to Honolulu and I went to Oahu,
- 46:53the, the island that Honolulu and Waikiki are on.
- 46:56And we were like, what are we going to do?
- 46:58And so my my dad, it was me, my dad, my brother, three of us,
- 47:01Honolulu and and Waikiki and all that.
- 47:04And, and we all picked one thing to do while we were there.
- 47:08And my brother said, I think it would nothing would be more
- 47:11Hawaiian than to go to see Don Ho.
- 47:15OK, so Don Ho, who's, you know, Mr. Hawaii, we go to the Don Ho
- 47:21show and he says, hey, yeah, I want to, I want to bring my
- 47:24daughter out to sing a couple of songs.
- 47:27And she's this beautiful Hawaiian girl named Hoku.
- 47:32OK is Don Ho's daughter Hoku? I mean, she's beautiful.
- 47:37And she's like my age. And I'm, I'm watching this girl.
- 47:41I'm like, man, this girl is something else, I'll tell ya.
- 47:45And I, so she performed a couple of songs well afterwards, after
- 47:50the show, 'cause it was this little place it, there was
- 47:53probably 50 people in the whole room with them singing.
- 47:57Afterwards there's like a little foyer area where they kind of
- 48:01were just, you know, people were exiting into and Don Ho's out
- 48:06there like talking to people and Hoku's out there and I'm like,
- 48:10this girl is hot. And I'm sitting there with my
- 48:16brother and I look over at at Hoku and she's like, she's
- 48:19giving me the eye, dude. Like Hoku is giving me the eye
- 48:25and and I'm like, I'm thinking of myself.
- 48:28I don't say anything, but I'm like, Hoku, I think is kind of
- 48:31giving me the eye. And this is Hoku.
- 48:34There's Hoku right here. She's I mean, she's beautiful.
- 48:37And my, my brother goes, dude, Hoku is checking you out.
- 48:42I'm like, I think she is, she is checking me out.
- 48:47And so my brother's like, you got to go talk to her.
- 48:49You got to go talk to her. I said no and I ran away and I
- 48:54never talked to her again. But like 6 months later she had
- 48:57like was all over MTV. She had her own music video.
- 49:02And I was like. Rats.
- 49:04That was my chance. Rats.
- 49:09What do you think about that? She's beautiful.
- 49:12That's the one that got away. Megan and my wife can't hear me,
- 49:16so we're good. I've never had one get away.
- 49:21Really. I was I was never when I was
- 49:26young. My wife and I started dating
- 49:28when we were 21 and there was never a woman who was giving me
- 49:31eyes before my wife. Shut up.
- 49:35Whatever. No, it didn't happen.
- 49:38All right, but there you go. Hoku Story in the books to cap
- 49:42off another episode. I said last week that it was
- 49:44like episode 20, but it was actually like 23 or something.
- 49:48So we're we're well into the 20s now. 20 bucks in the Lye jar.
- 49:53Well, next time I see you, remind me.
- 49:57All right. All right, buddy.
- 49:58Thanks, Craig. Bye.
