- 0:00Speaker 1: Boys, have you regained your breath just yet? 20 minutes
- 0:06Speaker 1: into this game, and Ohio State fans were already packing
- 0:10Speaker 1: their bags for Indianapolis and for the playoff.
- 0:15Speaker 2: The Buckeyes were up 10. They were up 13.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Then they were up 20. The number one team in
- 0:20Speaker 1: the country was doing exactly what number one teams do
- 0:24Speaker 1: to opponents. This is College Football Addiction. We are presented
- 0:28Speaker 1: by PrizePix. I'm T.J., And let's talk about this game tonight. However,
- 0:33Speaker 1: after that time frame went by, Texas remembered something. Half
- 0:38Speaker 1: an hour is a long way to go. And by
- 0:41Speaker 1: the time the clock hit zero, the Longhorns had scored
- 0:45Speaker 1: 21 unanswered points. Ohio State's defense had forgotten how to
- 0:50Speaker 1: tackle a running back named Hollywood Smothers, and another one
- 0:54Speaker 1: named Relique Brown. And Ryan Day was standing on the
- 0:57Speaker 1: visitor's sideline in Austin watching a 20-point lead evaporate in
- 1:01Speaker 1: real time.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Texas wins 24-23.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Not a moral victory, not a good loss that Saban
- 1:08Speaker 1: was preaching about on game day today. An actual win
- 1:12Speaker 1: on the scoreboard over the number one team in America
- 1:16Speaker 1: in front of millions of people that tuned in who said,
- 1:19Speaker 1: Let's be honest, we spent the same three quarters together
- 1:23Speaker 1: wondering if we'd have to sit through another boring fourth
- 1:26Speaker 1: quarter because Texas couldn't get anything going. And another one
- 1:32Speaker 1: of these is exactly what this was starting to feel like.
- 1:36Speaker 1: This is the third straight year that Texas and Ohio
- 1:38Speaker 1: State have played each other.
- 1:39Speaker 2: The third straight top five matchup.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And Texas walked into Saturday night 0-2 in the recent series.
- 1:48Speaker 1: A 14-7 loss in Columbus last year that opened up
- 1:51Speaker 1: Manning's career as a starter with a gut punch. And
- 1:55Speaker 1: before that, a Cotton Bowl playoff semifinal that ended the
- 1:58Speaker 1: same way. Sark was 0-5 combined against Ohio State and Georgia,
- 2:04Speaker 1: two of the premier programs in our sport during that stretch.
- 2:08Speaker 1: They were the two programs that continue to stand between
- 2:10Speaker 1: Texas and the thing they actually want. So when this
- 2:14Speaker 1: game started going that same direction as the last two,
- 2:18Speaker 1: you can forgive Longhorns fans and you can forgive the
- 2:20Speaker 1: rest of us that were in the public for feeling
- 2:22Speaker 1: like we'd seen this movie before. I've got three things
- 2:26Speaker 1: that I want to talk about today. Number one, never
- 2:29Speaker 1: say die. Number two, I want to talk about this
- 2:32Speaker 1: running game. And number three, I want to talk about
- 2:34Speaker 1: Texas' defense. We'll talk a little bit about Ohio State
- 2:37Speaker 1: in here too, but I'll tell you, Buckeyes, I'm not
- 2:39Speaker 1: here to pile on your grave. This is a Texas-focused video.
- 2:44Speaker 1: The sky is not falling in Columbus, but it certainly
- 2:47Speaker 1: has been lifted to another level there in Austin.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Let's talk about number one, never say die.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of people would save the
- 2:55Speaker 1: best for last, but I am too jacked up and
- 2:58Speaker 1: I love this sport too much to bury the lead.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Let's talk about how bad this actually got. Texas' first
- 3:04Speaker 1: offensive snap of the game. A fumble that ends up happening,
- 3:08Speaker 1: but let's be honest, an unlucky one where your running
- 3:13Speaker 1: back's leg lands on top of another player's leg, doesn't
- 3:17Speaker 1: let him go down fully. Jay Timmons comes in, forces
- 3:21Speaker 1: a fumble, recovers it. The Longhorns haven't even finished a
- 3:24Speaker 1: single play yet, and they're already handing the ball to
- 3:27Speaker 1: Ohio State.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Ohio State cashes in on it.
- 3:31Speaker 1: The game is quickly getting out of hand as Ohio
- 3:36Speaker 1: State scores again to go up 10-0. Texas finally answers
- 3:40Speaker 1: with a field goal. In between all of that, you
- 3:44Speaker 1: had Arch Manning taking a shot down the field to
- 3:46Speaker 1: Cam Coleman. The ball, unluckily again, though you beat the defender,
- 3:52Speaker 1: it wasn't just an incomplete pass. It lands clean in
- 3:56Speaker 1: the hands of Jalen McClain, and you give up more points.
- 4:02Speaker 2: The opportunity at more points.
- 4:05Speaker 1: And then the half is all summed up where Ohio
- 4:07Speaker 1: State stops you on a fourth down that I thought
- 4:10Speaker 1: was a terrible play call to run a reverse when
- 4:12Speaker 1: you've got running backs that love contact and love falling forward.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Sark certainly wasn't perfect in this game.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Neither was Texas.
- 4:19Speaker 1: And you have an opportunity to go get points snatched
- 4:23Speaker 1: from you. And Ohio State goes down and scores to
- 4:25Speaker 1: go up 20 to three at the half. The second
- 4:28Speaker 1: half of this game at halftime, I'll tell you, felt
- 4:31Speaker 1: like it was going to be a formality outside of
- 4:34Speaker 1: the break. Ohio State tacks on another field goal, 23-3.
- 4:38Speaker 1: You're down 20 points against the best team in the country.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And it wasn't just the scoreboard. Texas had negative field
- 4:45Speaker 1: possession for most of the first half, thanks to the
- 4:48Speaker 1: fumble and the pick. Ohio State was controlling the clock.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Julian Sand looked a lot more comfortable in the pocket.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Jeremiah Smith was catching everything. Every phase of the game
- 4:59Speaker 1: belonged to the Buckeyes. This is the part where a
- 5:02Speaker 1: lot of people may have changed their TV channel. This
- 5:05Speaker 1: is the part where journalists start writing a what's wrong
- 5:07Speaker 1: with Arch Manning article because he certainly didn't look great
- 5:10Speaker 1: for large stretches of this game. This is the part
- 5:14Speaker 1: where every doubt about Steve Sarkeesian was this close to
- 5:17Speaker 1: coming to fruition. I'm sure my buddy over at Freezing
- 5:20Speaker 1: Cold Takes had some ready to go. However, something happened
- 5:24Speaker 1: in that Texas locker room and those kids didn't change
- 5:27Speaker 1: the channel. Here's the thing about a 20-point deficit against
- 5:31Speaker 1: a team that's good.
- 5:32Speaker 2: It's not really about talent at that point.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Everybody on the field is a former five-star, a former
- 5:38Speaker 1: blue chip, a future Sunday guy.
- 5:41Speaker 2: The deficit is not a talent deficit.
- 5:44Speaker 1: It's a mental one. And that's the gap that either
- 5:47Speaker 1: swallows a team whole or turns into the best story
- 5:51Speaker 1: of the young season. Texas chose the second option. It
- 5:56Speaker 1: started with a defensive stand that finally slowed Ohio State down.
- 6:00Speaker 1: And then Arch Manning goes to work 15 plays, 91 yards,
- 6:05Speaker 1: capped off with a laser to Ryan Wingo in the
- 6:08Speaker 1: corner of the end zone.
- 6:09Speaker 2: You start the fourth quarter, it's now 23-10. You're down
- 6:13Speaker 2: two possessions.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Still needing a small miracle, or at least needing Ohio
- 6:18Speaker 1: State's offense to completely disappear for the rest of the night, which,
- 6:22Speaker 1: spoiler alert, that's exactly what happened. But then Arch Manning
- 6:27Speaker 1: converts his second and fourth down of the night, this
- 6:29Speaker 1: time of the fourth and sixth variety. You find your
- 6:33Speaker 1: way down the field, and a one-yard touchdown run by
- 6:37Speaker 1: Hollywood Smothers makes it 23-17. One-score game. And then Ohio State,
- 6:43Speaker 1: the number one team in the country. They move the
- 6:45Speaker 1: ball down the field. They get into field goal range,
- 6:49Speaker 1: and they miss a field goal that would have sealed
- 6:51Speaker 1: the game. Julian Sayen was not sharp. The defensive line
- 6:55Speaker 1: for Texas started to take over. Connor Hawkins misses a
- 6:59Speaker 1: field goal, and Texas gets the ball back with four
- 7:01Speaker 1: minutes to go Then there was that last drive by
- 7:04Speaker 1: Texas where they leaned on Ohio State, where they ran
- 7:08Speaker 1: the ball at will, where Brown and Smothers did really
- 7:11Speaker 1: whatever they wanted. Smothers punches the ball in for a
- 7:15Speaker 1: one-yard touchdown. Texas takes its first lead with the extra
- 7:18Speaker 1: point with 25 seconds left on the clock. Never say
- 7:22Speaker 1: die is not a slogan that you print on a
- 7:25Speaker 1: T-shirt after this one.
- 7:27Speaker 2: It's what literally happened.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Down 20 points to start the fourth quarter with a
- 7:32Speaker 1: broken offense and a defense that wasn't quite good enough
- 7:35Speaker 1: through three quarters. And Texas found a way to make
- 7:38Speaker 1: Ohio State feel every single one of those last 15 minutes.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Before I go on, I want to tell you about
- 7:45Speaker 2: a prize pick hit tonight.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Don't be too jealous about me telling you about this,
- 7:49Speaker 1: but I took Jamal Rule to score a touchdown. I
- 7:52Speaker 1: took Bishop at Tennessee to score a touchdown. I took
- 7:56Speaker 1: Sam Levitt to score two touchdowns. Let me tell you something.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I didn't realize those were rushing touchdowns. And I got really,
- 8:02Speaker 1: really fortunate that they were. He scored three of them tonight.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Thank you, football gods, for showing me some grace. And
- 8:08Speaker 1: then Ryan Wingo's touchdown was his fourth reception. Hit all
- 8:11Speaker 1: four of them. I don't want to flex with the
- 8:14Speaker 1: total of what this prize picks was worth, but it's
- 8:18Speaker 1: up there on the screen if you want to look
- 8:19Speaker 1: at it. Use my code HMA. You will have a
- 8:22Speaker 1: ton of fun on the prize picks app. All new
- 8:24Speaker 1: users who play $ 5 get $ 150 in lineups instantly. If
- 8:28Speaker 1: you watch the show, you'll see the picks I give
- 8:30Speaker 1: out every week. Maybe I'll get lucky again, and you
- 8:32Speaker 1: can tell me. Takeaway to this running game, I don't
- 8:36Speaker 1: know if I have the words for it. For all
- 8:39Speaker 1: the attention that Arch Manning's name gets him, and for
- 8:41Speaker 1: all the attention that Ryan Wingo and Cam Coleman and
- 8:44Speaker 1: these wide receivers and talented guys on the outside get,
- 8:47Speaker 1: this running game, again, I'm speechless.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Hollywood smothers.
- 8:54Speaker 1: A guy that scores the game-winning touchdown and also scores
- 8:57Speaker 1: the cut-it-to-one-possession touchdown.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It's what was working in the fourth quarter.
- 9:05Speaker 1: It was running the ball directly at a defense that
- 9:07Speaker 1: had spent three quarters shutting it down. Think about it
- 9:11Speaker 1: for a moment. Ohio State's defensive front is not bad.
- 9:15Speaker 1: They've got a lot of new guys over there, but
- 9:17Speaker 1: you couldn't tell for large portions of this game. They
- 9:20Speaker 1: were getting off blocks. They were stuffing the run. They
- 9:22Speaker 1: were forcing Texas into third and long.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Over and over again.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And then that depth just kind of takes over. Texas's
- 9:29Speaker 1: line up front, something changed there. And it went from
- 9:35Speaker 1: this isn't good enough on the ground to we're going
- 9:39Speaker 1: to lean on them a little bit.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Texas is grinding out 13-page 70-yard drives.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Chewing clock down, watering down a defense they've been on
- 9:48Speaker 1: the field for a lot of the night.
- 9:49Speaker 2: It's not luck.
- 9:51Speaker 1: It's an offensive line in a run game figuring out
- 9:54Speaker 1: the way through a great defense is the fourth quarter.
- 9:58Speaker 2: It's not necessarily a home run throw.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Four more yards, eight more yards, six more yards, four
- 10:04Speaker 1: more yards, five more yards until the defense simply doesn't
- 10:07Speaker 1: have anything left. Smothers finishing it all off with two
- 10:10Speaker 1: short down runs is not flashy. They may or may
- 10:14Speaker 1: not be the top plays on sports center one yard runs,
- 10:16Speaker 1: but it's the kind of Offensive play that wins championships.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Because it's always available on.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Command in the fourth quarter of a one-score game. That's
- 10:27Speaker 1: not something you can say about most rushing attacks in America.
- 10:31Speaker 1: And it wasn't just some others. Relique Brown was mixed
- 10:35Speaker 1: in all night. Gave Ohio State a very different look
- 10:37Speaker 1: between the tackles and on the edge. And that combination
- 10:41Speaker 1: is exactly why the fourth quarter drives felt so different
- 10:44Speaker 1: from the first half ones. Early in the game, I
- 10:46Speaker 1: thought Texas was too one-dimensional. I thought they were predictable.
- 10:49Speaker 1: And Ohio State's front teed off on it. By the
- 10:53Speaker 1: fourth quarter, Sarkeesian had two backs Ohio State had to respect.
- 10:57Speaker 1: And I think that changed the math of the entire game.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Manning scrambling at times when needed was big. The defense
- 11:05Speaker 1: obviously has to account for him on every single play.
- 11:08Speaker 1: And this is where Texas fans should feel genuinely good
- 11:11Speaker 1: heading into October. Not just because you won tonight, because
- 11:14Speaker 1: I know you feel good enough about that already.
- 11:16Speaker 2: But because if.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Manning can throw the ball and be a little more
- 11:19Speaker 1: accurate than he was tonight against, let's be honest, defenses
- 11:23Speaker 1: that are not going to be as good as this one,
- 11:25Speaker 1: maybe for the rest of the year. If Smothers and
- 11:29Speaker 1: Brown can close out games, then Sarkeesian has the two
- 11:32Speaker 1: things every great offense needs. A strike when you need
- 11:35Speaker 1: one and a hammer when you need one more. Against
- 11:39Speaker 1: Ohio State's defensive front, a group that had not allowed
- 11:42Speaker 1: much this year, that combination is what got it done. Now,
- 11:47Speaker 1: takeaway three, let's be honest about the first half. I
- 11:50Speaker 1: don't think Texas' defense was awful. I don't think the
- 11:54Speaker 1: offense put them in very good spots, but they weren't
- 11:56Speaker 1: lights out. Ohio State moved the ball when they needed to.
- 12:00Speaker 1: They put up 20 points. They looked like the better
- 12:02Speaker 1: team on that side of the ball for 30, 40 minutes.
- 12:07Speaker 1: But football is not graded on parts of games. It's
- 12:10Speaker 1: graded on the entire game. And in the second half,
- 12:13Speaker 1: Ohio State ran four possessions. They had three punts late
- 12:17Speaker 1: in the game and a missed field goal. Julian San,
- 12:21Speaker 1: who lit up Ball State a week earlier, completed two
- 12:24Speaker 1: of his last eight throws. The Buckeyes drove into Texas
- 12:27Speaker 1: territory on their final real chance to put the game away,
- 12:30Speaker 1: and they missed a field goal from 45 yards out.
- 12:33Speaker 2: That's not a lucky bounce.
- 12:34Speaker 1: It's a defense that figured something out at halftime and
- 12:37Speaker 1: executed it for really two full quarters. You held Ohio
- 12:40Speaker 1: State to three points in the second half. Ohio State
- 12:44Speaker 1: had scored on four of its five first-half possessions. In
- 12:48Speaker 1: the second half, they scored on one of them, and
- 12:51Speaker 1: it was only a field goal, not a touchdown. You
- 12:54Speaker 1: want to know why Texas won this game? It's not
- 12:56Speaker 1: just the offense scoring 21 points unanswered. It's a defense
- 13:02Speaker 1: that helped one of the best offenses in the country
- 13:04Speaker 1: to three points across two quarters. A single stop the
- 13:08Speaker 1: other way, and this ends very differently. Lights out does
- 13:12Speaker 1: not mean perfect. It means showing up when the alternative
- 13:15Speaker 1: is losing. I've got to give the coaching staff credit here, too.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Whatever adjustment got made at halftime, it worked pretty well.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Ohio State's first drive out of the locker room didn't score,
- 13:26Speaker 1: but their second one did.
- 13:28Speaker 2: A field goal instead of a touchdown. Their next drive died.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Their next drive died. Their next drive died. Missed kick.
- 13:35Speaker 1: It's not one adjustment holding up for a series. That's
- 13:37Speaker 1: a defense that's finally executing a game plan for a
- 13:41Speaker 1: I think the better part of two quarters against the
- 13:44Speaker 1: Heisman caliber quarterback and the best wide receiver in the game. Look,
- 13:49Speaker 1: I'm not going to sit here and tell you guys
- 13:50Speaker 1: that Ohio state, the sky should be falling there.
- 13:54Speaker 2: It isn't.
- 13:55Speaker 1: So it's still a team that can compete with anybody
- 13:58Speaker 1: in the country. It's still a team with Jeremiah Smith
- 14:01Speaker 1: running around, catching everything near him. Still the number one
- 14:04Speaker 1: team in the country by a lot of people's count
- 14:06Speaker 1: walking into this game. and a team that led by
- 14:09Speaker 1: 20 points on the road against a top-five opponent. But
- 14:12Speaker 1: you do have to be honest about what happened in
- 14:13Speaker 1: the second half. It just wasn't good enough. Julian San
- 14:17Speaker 1: was ice-cold, throwing behind Smith. Their defense had dominated for
- 14:22Speaker 1: much of the first half and then couldn't get a
- 14:24Speaker 1: stop when Texas needed all of 13 plays to survive
- 14:27Speaker 1: long drives.
- 14:29Speaker 2: I think Ohio State will be fine. They're too talented.
- 14:32Speaker 2: They're well-coached. They're deep. But this loss is going to
- 14:35Speaker 2: remind them of... What is there if they don't keep
- 14:40Speaker 2: their foot on the gas?
- 14:42Speaker 1: Blowing a 20-point lead in the biggest game of the
- 14:45Speaker 1: regular season is exactly the kind of result that can
- 14:48Speaker 1: show up again in December if people are not fixing
- 14:51Speaker 1: the issues that are being caused. Ryan Day has been
- 14:55Speaker 1: here before. Big early season statement games that don't go
- 14:58Speaker 1: Ohio State's way tend to get replayed on TV for months.
- 15:02Speaker 1: The margin for error for the Buckeyes just got a
- 15:04Speaker 1: lot smaller. And the schedule doesn't get a whole lot easier. Now,
- 15:08Speaker 1: you won't play Texas again, but you do have Indiana.
- 15:10Speaker 1: You do have Michigan. You do have a Nebraska team
- 15:14Speaker 1: that's 3-0. You do have Oregon, although I know those
- 15:17Speaker 1: last two probably don't compare to the first couple. But
- 15:20Speaker 1: the best team in the country conversation just found a
- 15:22Speaker 1: real answer, and it's going to take some winning to
- 15:25Speaker 1: get back there.
- 15:27Speaker 2: For Texas, though, none of that matters right now.
- 15:29Speaker 1: What matters is a team that was dead in the
- 15:31Speaker 1: water for 30 or 40 minutes, and they refused to
- 15:33Speaker 1: accept it. What matters is a running game that closed
- 15:36Speaker 1: out the best team in the country. And what matters
- 15:38Speaker 1: is a defense that turned it on exactly when the
- 15:41Speaker 1: alternative was unthinkable. 20 points down against the number one
- 15:45Speaker 1: team in the country, and they did not blink.
- 15:48Speaker 2: That's the story of tonight. I'd love to hear your
- 15:51Speaker 2: thoughts down in the comments.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Where does this rank on the best comebacks you've seen
- 15:57Speaker 1: in college football in the last couple of years?
- 16:00Speaker 2: It's way up there for me. And I know that's hyperbolic.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I know that that's being a prisoner of the moment,
- 16:06Speaker 1: but down 20 points in the fourth quarter and then
- 16:09Speaker 1: beating the number one team in the country by scoring
- 16:11Speaker 1: 21 straight, you really can't script things a whole lot
- 16:14Speaker 1: better than that. I know you Texas fans are over
- 16:17Speaker 1: the moon while you're over the moon right now, hit
- 16:19Speaker 1: the subscribe button on your way out.
- 16:20Speaker 2: We'll see you on the next one here on college
- 16:22Speaker 2: football addiction.
