- 0:19Welcome back to the songwriter showcase from the Scene Projects.
- 0:22We are here at the Midway Saloon in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
- 0:25And now I have Tyler Herwig with me.
- 0:27Welcome to the show, Tyler.
- 0:28Thanks for having me, Bubba.
- 0:29It's always a pleasure to speak with you.
- 0:31It's good to see you again.
- 0:32Yeah.
- 0:32It's been too long.
- 0:33It has, like, almost a year.
- 0:34Yeah.
- 0:35Crazy.
- 0:35Crazy how time flies.
- 0:37Well, Tyler, before we get into the music, why don't you tell everybody who you are and what
- 0:41you do?
- 0:41Yeah.
- 0:42I'm Tyler.
- 0:43I sing songs.
- 0:44This is this is it.
- 0:45This is all that I do.
- 0:46So I'm a singer songwriter based out of here based out of the Twin Cities here.
- 0:50I perform 280 shows a year all throughout the Midwest, I'm kind just living the dream one
- 0:57song at a time.
- 0:58It's pretty cool.
- 0:58One song at a time.
- 1:00I think there's a song there.
- 1:01There probably is.
- 1:02Yeah.
- 1:03That's beautiful, man.
- 1:04Two eighty shows a year.
- 1:05How do you do it?
- 1:06Practice, patience, and a lot of water.
- 1:09Yeah.
- 1:10Honestly.
- 1:12Yeah, and podcasts help too.
- 1:14I wish I knew a good podcast to listen to.
- 1:17Oh, well, I could recommend one.
- 1:19Could you?
- 1:20Yeah.
- 1:20We've actually been featured on it a couple of times now.
- 1:22A few times.
- 1:23Yes, you have.
- 1:25And and we actually got into that.
- 1:26I mean, 280 shows to to someone like me who maybe doesn't even play 50 or 60 shows a year,
- 1:32it's just, bonkers.
- 1:32Like, holy cow.
- 1:33That's four times what I'm doing and trying to output that.
- 1:36It's a little bit different now that I am doing the podcasting and we're doing a lot more
- 1:40writing on thesceneprojects.com, shameless plug.
- 1:42But we you know, it takes a lot.
- 1:47It takes a toll physically.
- 1:50Like, I've only played two shows this weekend.
- 1:52I can feel my voice and everything going.
- 1:54So is there any tips or tricks for people who are, you know, pursuing this this dream to
- 2:00kinda take care of their voice and and to help them, you know, have some longevity in their
- 2:04career.
- 2:05Yeah.
- 2:05Absolutely.
- 2:06I would definitely recommend as you're adding more shows to your schedule year over year, add
- 2:09them slowly.
- 2:10Like, don't go from doing 50 shows to 280 shows, like, overnight.
- 2:16That is a good way to destroy your voice.
- 2:18I've been very blessed to have started off my career when I was only 16 and I'm 31 now.
- 2:23So I've added a few more shows year over year over year and that's allowed my voice to
- 2:27strengthen over time as opposed to just trying to take on a brunt load right all up front.
- 2:33Right.
- 2:33I also do a lot of stuff like drinking a lot of tea, which is always helpful.
- 2:38I sleep with a humidifier on, which seems maybe like not the biggest deal to some people, but
- 2:42that just helps to lubricate your voice and helps with that recovery day after day.
- 2:47You can also do like nebulizer treatments if you want to get real fancy with it.
- 2:50Now, I'll do that if I'm feeling pretty weak on a particular day if I'm fighting a cold.
- 2:54But and then not talking outside of shows is something that I've really taken to heart.
- 3:01Like, I typically take one day off a week where I'm not performing or singing.
- 3:04That's for me, that's normally Mondays, where I do a full day of vocal rest.
- 3:08So I don't on Mondays, actually I don't talk at all, which is weird for some people.
- 3:13And it's a hard practice to get into, but it's the only way to give my voice time to
- 3:17truly For someone like me, Tyler, that is insane to even consider.
- 3:22I'm sure my wife would love it.
- 3:23Danielle's smiling ear to ear right now just thinking about a vocal rest a day.
- 3:28No.
- 3:29It's a it's a cool practice too because, like, you you you learn a lot about yourself and,
- 3:33like, how uncomfortable silence can be.
- 3:35I was actually just this morning was listening to another speaker that I listen to frequently.
- 3:40His name is Trent Palmer.
- 3:42And he was talking about how uncomfortable people get quickly with silence.
- 3:48And in The US, on average, people get uncomfortable with silence in about four
- 3:51seconds.
- 3:52That's wild.
- 3:53The best in the entire world is Japan, where they get uncomfortable after eight seconds.
- 3:58Wow.
- 3:58So learning to just sit and be still with yourself with no distractions, nothing going
- 4:03on, is a huge challenge for people in general.
- 4:06And so it's been a really cool practice that I started.
- 4:08It's just like a vocal recovery thing, and it's turning it into this whole meditative day that
- 4:13I get for myself once a week.
- 4:15Well, that's great.
- 4:15And do you find that, you know, especially because it is such a grueling schedule that you
- 4:21have, especially now traveling to Nashville and doing all these things that that day is almost
- 4:26the most important day of the week to kinda come back to that center, to have that rest, to
- 4:30to find the energy, to go back out there and do it all over again.
- 4:34Oh, absolutely.
- 4:35Absolutely.
- 4:35And it's my wife's favorite day of the week.
- 4:37So
- 4:38Sure it is.
- 4:38We're gonna talk more about the wife and the family, I'm sure, after you play us a song.
- 4:42But why don't we get into the music?
- 4:43Why don't you play us a song?
- 4:44Yeah.
- 4:44So the first thing I wanna do for you guys is one I wrote several years ago and released back
- 4:49in January of this year.
- 4:51It's a song that I play pretty much any time I get the opportunity, and it it's called Enough.
- 4:55And the story behind this song is is really the whole reason that I'm I'm singing and take
- 5:00music as seriously as I do.
- 5:01I'm coming up here on it'll be five years clean and sober from addiction in just a few weeks.
- 5:07We can get some taps for that for sure.
- 5:09Thank you.
- 5:09I don't I don't wanna front my time, but, you know, I'm pretty excited.
- 5:12I I think I'm gonna make it.
- 5:13So and this song is one that I wrote.
- 5:15It's really just an apology to all the people that were willing to try their best for me even
- 5:19during the times when I wasn't willing to try my best for myself.
- 5:22So this is enough.
- 5:24Let's hear it.
- 5:30I've been keeping all these secrets and hiding all of my feelings.
- 5:35Drinking every day just to cover them up.
- 5:38Wasting pieces of vapor on changing in vapor.
- 5:43When would I figure out it was never enough?
- 5:47If I could change your mind, and know that I would.
- 5:55No need to say goodbye, the boy is understood.
- 6:02You told me that it wasn't enough, but you gave for you and for me before we win darts every
- 6:12way.
- 6:12I can't blame you.
- 6:14I messed it up.
- 6:17Tell me you made my best, You've been telling me that you're heaven sent.
- 6:36The words you said didn't come from above.
- 6:40You should be able to weather the weather.
- 6:43It rained and I changed.
- 6:45You had enough.
- 6:48If I could turn back time, you know, we'd all would.
- 6:55Then days went by so fast.
- 6:59You did all you could.
- 7:17I don't mean to meet my best, but my worst was just too much for you.
- 7:24I'll take all the blame.
- 7:27I was just thunky to take you home.
- 7:32I'm serving for the things I said I never know that I needed.
- 7:37I need a change, and you couldn't save me.
- 7:44You told me that you wanted to know, but you gave all you had for me.
- 7:51Before we went our sideways, I can't blame you, a messy dog.
- 7:58I Jumping to me at my best, but my worst was just too much for you.
- 8:05I'll take all the blame.
- 8:07I was just thunky to take you home.
- 8:24It's a beautiful song, Tyler.
- 8:27It's nice to be sitting next to you and hear that vulnerability right here in my ears, man.
- 8:32It really, really touches my soul.
- 8:34Your music heals, man.
- 8:35And I think the the fan base and the career that you're building speaks to that.
- 8:40I think, you know, the things you write about, obviously, you know, recovery, addiction, those
- 8:45aren't easy things to address.
- 8:47Those aren't easy things to just lay it out there and go, hey.
- 8:49I'm a I'm a mess.
- 8:50You know what I mean?
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:51My life was completely broken, but I think the success story that you're writing right now is
- 8:58so inspiring to so many millions of people.
- 9:01We just gotta get the word out about you.
- 9:03That's why the scene projects and everything that I'm doing is so important because not
- 9:09everybody is as lucky as I am to be surrounded in their whole lives with these beautifully
- 9:15talented people who are sharing themselves.
- 9:18Right?
- 9:18So I get the best job in the world to get to share you with the world.
- 9:22You know?
- 9:23So awesome, Tyler.
- 9:25You mentioned your wife.
- 9:27I know she's very, very pregnant right now.
- 9:29Yes.
- 9:30You guys actually just spent the whole night in the hospital.
- 9:32Thankfully, everyone is okay.
- 9:33Yes.
- 9:34But, you know, I I appreciate your commitment to to coming in here, and and you could've
- 9:39called me and told me the story, and I would've been perfectly fine with it.
- 9:44Somebody's gotta pay the hospital bills, so
- 9:45might as
- 9:46well be me, you know?
- 9:47Well, the check's in the mail, bud.
- 9:49I wouldn't I wouldn't check too soon.
- 9:51Okay.
- 9:53But, yeah, Megan is a huge part of your career as well.
- 9:57You shared with me that she's kinda your social media and content creator side of what you're
- 10:01doing, and we all know that in this world now that it is so important to be putting that
- 10:07stuff out there consistently and doing all of that.
- 10:09Can you kinda talk about the power duo that you guys are and how that's helped you to really
- 10:14amplify your career and to get the you know, to that next step?
- 10:18Yeah.
- 10:18Absolutely.
- 10:19I mean, not only is she one of my biggest inspirations, she and and my my daughter and
- 10:24soon to be son are some of my biggest inspirations for writing, but she's really the
- 10:28reason that I I took music from what was a a well paid hobby into a full time career,
- 10:33actually.
- 10:34So when I was a year sober, I moved out of the sober house.
- 10:38We got married.
- 10:38And the day after we got married, she told me that as my wedding gift, she believed in my
- 10:43dream so much that she wanted me to quit my my day job and pursue music full time.
- 10:48And and her logic behind that was basically that, you know, she had a a good paying job at
- 10:54the time and that if I failed, it would be okay because we didn't have any any kids.
- 10:59So she could support us by herself.
- 11:01Well, three weeks later, we found out we were pregnant with our daughter.
- 11:04So we had a very successful wedding night and it's all been kind of a roller coaster from
- 11:08there.
- 11:10But she's continued to encourage me even when we found that out.
- 11:12She had no hesitation.
- 11:13She was she was all in and has believed in me even that, you know, on the days where I I play
- 11:18in front of just it's me and the bartender for for three or four hours singing songs.
- 11:22She still comes and says, you know what?
- 11:24You're doing the thing that you need to do and maybe the bartender needed to hear the songs
- 11:27you were singing that night.
- 11:28And she's continued to push me to find more shows, to play on bigger stages.
- 11:33And actually, as of just this year, she quit her full time job and her dream job to come and
- 11:39support me even even more.
- 11:42And like you said, take over a lot of the responsibilities that I had with creating my
- 11:46own content every single day.
- 11:48She's now an official partner with Tyler Herwig Music.
- 11:52So it's That's amazing.
- 11:53Been really cool to see this evolution of, you know, it started off with, like, my dream for
- 11:56over a decade to then she pushed me into it, and now she's come in and and fully embraced
- 12:02that this is Yeah.
- 12:04Pushed you in first,
- 12:05and then she cannonballed in right behind you.
- 12:06Yeah.
- 12:07Right on top of me, you could say.
- 12:08Yeah.
- 12:09And that's how you ended up with baby number two?
- 12:10That's how we ended up with baby number two.
- 12:15My daughter's eczema was out of control.
- 12:19She couldn't sleep because she was scratching her whole back, her bottom, her elbows, her
- 12:26knees, everything was just covered.
- 12:28I'm pretty sure it's genetic for her, but I know that there are things in our environment
- 12:34that are exacerbating it or making it worse.
- 12:36Right?
- 12:36It could even be things like laundry detergent, the wash she was using in the bath, lotions I
- 12:43was using on her.
- 12:43I saw my friend posting that her little one was also struggling with eczema and that she used
- 12:49this special lotion right here, the best stuff that we have tried so far.
- 12:55We did try other lotions and creams that worked, but they broke the bank.
- 12:59We literally could not afford to buy them on a regular basis to keep up with how much she was
- 13:04having eczema breakouts.
- 13:06But this stuff was great, super affordable, safe for her super sensitive skin.
- 13:11She's only two, and I have no hesitations of putting this on her, and it's been the best
- 13:16thing that has worked so far.
- 13:23Play us another song.
- 13:24We are poor
- 13:25joke, Bubba.
- 13:26Yeah.
- 13:26Yeah.
- 13:27Alright.
- 13:27Well, that's alright.
- 13:27You're a dad.
- 13:28I'm a dad.
- 13:29It happens.
- 13:29But do you actually know when a when a dad joke becomes a dad joke?
- 13:33No.
- 13:33It becomes apparent.
- 13:34Oh.
- 13:35Alright.
- 13:36The next song I wanna sing for you guys is actually a song I wrote called All Yours, and I
- 13:40released it just earlier this year.
- 13:42It it's really the the way that I I found to say thank you to my wife for supporting my
- 13:47dream and for coming in and and taking over some of the responsibilities that I was I was
- 13:51holding on to.
- 13:52And so this just walks you through my way of saying thank you to her.
- 13:55So this is all yours.
- 14:15Told myself this was my best life.
- 14:17And now I'm flying high.
- 14:20I'm
- 14:21never coming down when I'm with you.
- 14:25I'll never touch the ground.
- 14:28I got everything I need to be happy.
- 14:33I got everything I want and more.
- 14:38Now I'm somebody who's got someone next to me.
- 14:42I thank God that I'm all yours.
- 14:49Oh, I thank the Lord.
- 14:54If you would've asked me with my foot and I'm black, why big advancing us and burping life
- 15:00domesticated, but we're always playing, making memories to last a long time
- 15:04with you.
- 15:05Now I'm flying high.
- 15:08I'm never coming down when I'm with you.
- 15:13I'll never touch the ground.
- 15:16I got everything I need to be happy.
- 15:21I got everything I want anymore.
- 15:26Now I'm somebody who's got someone next to me.
- 15:30I thank God that I'm all yours.
- 15:37Oh, I thank the Lord.
- 15:42I got everything I need to be happy.
- 15:47I got everything I want and more.
- 15:53Now I'm somebody who's got someone next to me.
- 15:58I thank God that I'm all yours.
- 16:07Beautiful.
- 16:08Thank you.
- 16:10So I think when I when I listen to your songs, I don't I don't hear country music.
- 16:17Right?
- 16:17But you're we're both members of Midwest Country Music Organization, but you're also a
- 16:21member of the CMAs.
- 16:23I am.
- 16:23The CMA.
- 16:24The CMA.
- 16:26Do you feel that your style holds you back in the country music world or do you feel like
- 16:32being kind of different from what is the mainstream and what people would typically
- 16:36think of as country music, Do you feel like that's setting you apart is kinda helping your
- 16:41career advance a little bit more?
- 16:42Sure.
- 16:42I definitely think there's some challenges with it because I I definitely walk kind of fine
- 16:46line between country and pop music.
- 16:49One of the things that I've I've found, at least in my opinion, is that I think country
- 16:53music is more about telling a story.
- 16:55Yes.
- 16:55And that's kind
- 16:56of my would a % agree with you.
- 16:58And that's my goal.
- 16:59And so when I when I write a song and I take it all the way through production, like, sometimes
- 17:02it it doesn't have a country sound necessarily, but the storytelling aspect is there.
- 17:10And that to me is what defines country music, especially as we've seen so many pop and hip
- 17:15hop influences.
- 17:16Like, you can hear country songs right now that have just these big eight zero eights playing
- 17:19in the background.
- 17:20And I'm like, you know what?
- 17:21Well, why can't my song be considered country too?
- 17:23Like, maybe it's not everyone's version of country, but that's okay.
- 17:26My goal is to tell the story and to serve the song as best I can.
- 17:29Right.
- 17:29Well, and especially considering that, you know, obviously, I don't I I think I speak for
- 17:34everyone that when when you sing and when you play, there's the Jason Mraz, there's the Ed
- 17:38Sheeran kind of thing.
- 17:39But there's not necessarily a home right now in popular music, you know, pop music for that.
- 17:45Right?
- 17:45For sure.
- 17:46All of it is mostly electronically done.
- 17:48You know, it's the kind of EDM sound, and it's very homogenized, I feel like, in that, you
- 17:53know, in the sound of it.
- 17:54And there's not a lot of room for this.
- 17:56So I think you made the right choice to to just be true to yourself, but to to lean into the
- 18:01country communities because that's where the storytellers are.
- 18:05Absolutely.
- 18:05And there's such a I mean, in every, like, genre of music, there really is just kind of
- 18:09this unique community.
- 18:11And I found that I connect with the people, at least at the moment, the best in the country
- 18:16community.
- 18:16We just have we have a lot of the same values.
- 18:18We have a lot of the same kinds of stories, and and we like to sing in the same way.
- 18:22Like, I don't typically perform with a large band, so I can find a lot of my shows more
- 18:28easily if I'm just doing a solo thing and that kinda locks me into a little bit more of a
- 18:32country route, you know, just me and an acoustic guitar.
- 18:36But I just I don't know.
- 18:37I love I love the country community.
- 18:39Right.
- 18:39Well, I think it's because of the people, obviously.
- 18:42Mean, look at all of us here hanging out.
- 18:44Absolutely.
- 18:45You don't
- 18:45find pop musicians doing this.
- 18:47No.
- 18:47We don't.
- 18:48No.
- 18:49Well, it's just not part of their world.
- 18:51Community is not part of that world.
- 18:53The pop music world is I want to be the star.
- 18:56Right.
- 18:56I don't wanna be one of many stars in the sky.
- 18:58I want to be the one that shines the brightest, and that's kind of the attitude of the genre.
- 19:03So I think you found a home.
- 19:05I'm so glad that you're my brother, and we're we're attached in so many of these communities,
- 19:10and we get to share our stories with one another.
- 19:12It's so fun.
- 19:13Tell us a little bit about what a a typical week for you working now kinda looks like.
- 19:18I know you're commuting to Nashville from Minneapolis weekly.
- 19:22I assume with the baby coming, that'll probably take a little bit of a break, at least maybe
- 19:27for a few weeks.
- 19:28But Yeah.
- 19:29Kinda share with us because that's not a typical Midwest, you know, job or or job
- 19:35description rather.
- 19:36Yeah.
- 19:36There's a lot of back and forth between Nashville.
- 19:38I work with a lot of different producers and songwriters out there as well as a couple
- 19:42different studios to kind of, you know, not only hone my own craft, but to make some good
- 19:46music.
- 19:47And so that's that's been an exciting thing.
- 19:49And only so much I can talk about with that at the moment.
- 19:52But it it it definitely adds a different layer of of complexity to what I was used to doing,
- 19:59which is, you know, staying really within about a hundred miles of of the twin cities here,
- 20:03which is like my home base.
- 20:05And so now I have this opportunity to perform all over the world and and sing songs for
- 20:09people.
- 20:10My typical week, though, really looks like trying to spend as much time with my my family
- 20:14as I can, so that way I can be a present father and husband.
- 20:19And then, honestly, recently, it's a lot of TikTok.
- 20:22There's a lot of TikTok.
- 20:23I go live on TikTok a lot now, which is a great thing.
- 20:27Like, it's a cool resource, but definitely is
- 20:29Are you seeing are you seeing a lot of new fans from there?
- 20:33Oh my gosh.
- 20:34Yes.
- 20:35Right.
- 20:35Okay.
- 20:35I know we talk a lot of smack on TikTok and we talk a lot, but I think it's the number one new
- 20:41fan Like generator.
- 20:44Place.
- 20:44Yeah.
- 20:44Generator.
- 20:45There we go.
- 20:45And and I mean, I think that each social media platform kinda has a unique purpose in
- 20:50understanding what that purpose is and then just kinda tailoring the same content but maybe
- 20:55a little different wording for each platform is really helpful.
- 20:57Like, I find that Instagram and Facebook, for me at least, are more about fostering long term
- 21:02relationships with people.
- 21:04TikTok and YouTube tend to be more about discoverability.
- 21:07And so as far as getting, just my face in front of people, TikTok and YouTube have served me
- 21:13the best with with the quickest return on investment as well.
- 21:16And you can
- 21:16do it from home.
- 21:17Mhmm.
- 21:18Absolutely.
- 21:18And you can make really good money doing it.
- 21:20Like, I I started live streaming just all of my normal performances.
- 21:24Like, I set up a little tripod in my phone and, don't even interact with my TikTok audience at
- 21:29all.
- 21:30And I probably I I've been doing it since January of of this year, so almost a year now.
- 21:34And I went from, like, a thousand followers.
- 21:38Now I'm I'm almost it'll I'll hit 16,000 this afternoon for sure.
- 21:42And I make on average about a hundred dollars extra a night just on TikTok.
- 21:46We would all take that.
- 21:47Would we not to write an extra hundred bucks in the tip jar at the end of the night?
- 21:51So let that be a lesson to everyone.
- 21:52If you don't have a TikTok, go make yourself a TikTok for your band.
- 21:56Be going live on there and getting it out there and using it as a tool.
- 22:00Right?
- 22:00You don't have to spend all your time there.
- 22:02But all of these social media things, I mean, none of this happens without Facebook.
- 22:05I'm gonna let you all know that right now.
- 22:07Facebook is the reason that I'm connected with any of these artists and any of these venues
- 22:10and everything.
- 22:11It was all built off of social media.
- 22:13It's just a matter of how you use the tool.
- 22:15Absolutely.
- 22:16And there's there's really cool communities.
- 22:17Like, I've been able to connect with some artists on TikTok that are, like, those viral
- 22:21artists that you see singing in, like, kitchens and stuff that have tens of millions of
- 22:25followers and stuff.
- 22:26They're all really friendly, and I've been able to actually communicate with them.
- 22:30And
- 22:30Have you met Alexandra Kay down there yet?
- 22:33No.
- 22:33Okay.
- 22:34AK's a we're big fans of hers.
- 22:35We were at a show of hers in Sioux Falls more than a year ago now.
- 22:40It was summer of twenty twenty three.
- 22:42This year, she was on tour with jelly roll playing arenas.
- 22:44Right?
- 22:44So she went from playing for a few hundred people in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and she
- 22:50what she did was she did meet and greets, and she hugged every single person that wanted to
- 22:54see her.
- 22:54She didn't charge a dime for it.
- 22:55There was no VIP.
- 22:57She put in the time with all of her fans, preshow, postshow.
- 23:01During the show, she pulled Danielle's sign up that we made.
- 23:04Danielle walked down the aisle to her song.
- 23:06So we made a sign that said that.
- 23:08She pulled the sign up there, met a big deal about us.
- 23:10She changed my life because I was like, that's what it's about.
- 23:13We wanna be when we come to the show, we want to be seen.
- 23:16We want to be heard and and to feel that specialness and to share how, you know, that
- 23:21person's music affected us.
- 23:23Right?
- 23:23And not everybody has the opportunity like I do to sit on stage with these wonderful performers
- 23:28and to do this.
- 23:28So
- 23:29And that's one of the things that I've I've actually started doing something similar is I I
- 23:32allow my fans to book Zoom calls with me.
- 23:35And I host fifteen minute meet and greets with all my fans.
- 23:37That's awesome.
- 23:38So I
- 23:38can meet them from all over the world.
- 23:39I was just on the on the Zoom call two days ago with a a woman from The UK.
- 23:43Right.
- 23:43It was wild.
- 23:44You guys, if you're listening, you're watching, artists take lessons from this man.
- 23:49This is how this thing is done.
- 23:51You gotta be out there playing.
- 23:52You gotta be out there writing and connecting with people.
- 23:55And it's not about where you're at, and it's not about who you, you know, who you know.
- 24:00It's about who you are and being true to that.
- 24:02And then going out and finding the people that connect with that.
- 24:05Yeah.
- 24:06Absolutely.
- 24:06Me one more song, Tyler, then I gotta let you go.
- 24:09Alright.
- 24:09This this last one is is unreleased.
- 24:11It's brand new.
- 24:11I wrote it when my wife told me that she was pregnant with baby number two just a few months
- 24:16ago.
- 24:17And this song is is really long story short, I took when she told me she was pregnant, I took
- 24:22her and my daughter to Disney World as like one little family vacation where it would just be
- 24:27the three of us one last time before my son is born and ruins all my plans.
- 24:31And so we go to Disney World.
- 24:34I made the mistake of taking them to Disney World in the June, which is the worst time to
- 24:38go to Disney World.
- 24:39We were there for four days.
- 24:40It was 98 degrees out, super humid, and for three of the four days, it just thunderstormed
- 24:44the entire time.
- 24:46And so to paint the picture, I'm standing in line to ride this stupid teacup thing for two
- 24:50and a half hours with a screaming two and a half year old and in the pouring rain.
- 24:55And we eventually get through some of these dumb rides, and go to the park where we get to
- 25:00meet all the characters, and my my wife is standing next to me, and my daughter sees
- 25:03Mickey Mouse for the first time.
- 25:05Right?
- 25:05And she is over the moon, because in her mind, Mickey Mouse is real and the most famous person
- 25:10in the world.
- 25:11So she runs up to him, and I look over at my wife, and she's just got this giant smile on
- 25:16her face and is bawling these happy tears.
- 25:18And it kinda clicked for me in that moment that no matter what I was going to say or how I was
- 25:23gonna act, nothing was gonna take away her joy because she was going to actively choose
- 25:27happiness.
- 25:28And it it dawned on me when we got back to where we were staying that when I'm 80 years
- 25:32old, retired, sitting on my porch, yelling at kids to get off my front lawn, right next to me
- 25:37is gonna be this beautiful woman who's encouraging me to choose joy throughout it all.
- 25:40And that's what inspired this next song, Honey That's You.
- 25:51Cigarette on my lips, undress on your hips and they're doing what you do.
- 26:00Oh, honey, that's you.
- 26:05Laughing when there's no joke, you're always ready to go, and you don't need no make of
- 26:11wanted shoe.
- 26:14Oh, honey, that's you.
- 26:20The one I've been praying for my whole life.
- 26:24Someone to send my days and nights.
- 26:27The one that'll love me wrong alright and wear my ring if you ask me.
- 26:36Oh, honey, that's you.
- 26:41You found a mess in me.
- 26:43Look past what I
- 26:44couldn't see inside myself.
- 26:47Somehow you'll know it.
- 26:51Oh, honey, that's you.
- 26:56The one I've been praying for my whole life.
- 27:00Someone to send my days and nights.
- 27:03The one that'll love me wrong or right.
- 27:07It went by a ring if you ask me.
- 27:12Oh, that's you.
- 27:18When I'm 80 years old, our kids are married and grown, I know who I'll be holding on to.
- 27:28Oh, honey, that's you.
- 27:34The one I've been praying for my whole life.
- 27:38Someone to send my days and nights.
- 27:41The one that'll love me wrong, alright, and wear my ring if you ask me.
- 27:51Oh, honey, that's you.
