Latest / Unlocking The Paradigm Portal / The Hero’s Journey Sucks — And That’s The Point
Transcript
- 0:00Hello everybody, welcome back to Unlocking the Paradigm Portal.
- 0:03My name is Sarah. So I am here today to talk about
- 0:06something that gets romanticized way too much and also really is
- 0:11useful to understand, and that is the hero's journey.
- 0:15So you may have heard about this in a literature class or in some
- 0:19kind of self help book, and it usually gets presented as
- 0:23beautiful and transformational and epic.
- 0:26But frankly, in practice, it sucks.
- 0:30And it really is so crucial if you are someone who's trying to
- 0:32understand yourself better because it makes everything
- 0:35start to make sense. So if you don't know about it,
- 0:39in 1949, there was this guy Joseph Campbell.
- 0:42And he published a book after spending years and years reading
- 0:46every myth, every fairy tale, every religious story he could
- 0:50get his hands on. And I'm talking across every
- 0:53culture continent, era, all of it.
- 0:55And what he found was that they all tell the same story.
- 0:59The details may change, the hero changes, but the arc is
- 1:02identical. So he called it the monomyth,
- 1:06and we call it the hero's journey.
- 1:08And if you need a reference from for this, thanks, Star Wars.
- 1:12Because Luke goes from that whiny boy to the Jedi.
- 1:15And if you know those movies, you saw the whole transformation
- 1:19of him. If you don't get out from under
- 1:21your rock, go check him out. Another one, my personal
- 1:24favorite is Paula Tradies in Dune and Frodo leaving the Shire
- 1:30in modern stuff. Disney would be like Moana.
- 1:33So what? Campbell maybe didn't
- 1:36anticipate. And the reason the same story
- 1:39shows up everywhere across human history is because it's not just
- 1:43a story structure, it's a map of how human beings actually
- 1:47transform. So the myths were always
- 1:50reflecting real experience back at us.
- 1:52If you're able to step back and see that we all just started
- 1:55reading them as fiction and forgot that part.
- 1:58So I want to talk about it because I am full on diving into
- 2:01it because it really is our own stories in everyday life.
- 2:06And the more that you understand it, the more when struggles and
- 2:09challenges come up, you can actually identify in real time,
- 2:13like, oh, I'm at this stage of my hero's journey.
- 2:16And frankly, you are the hero of your journey.
- 2:19I am the hero of my journey. We all are.
- 2:22So things to remember. Nobody volunteers for the hero's
- 2:25journey. Nobody wakes up in the morning
- 2:27and is like, you know what? I think today feels like a great
- 2:30day. To have my entire life
- 2:32disrupted, flame up into a dumpster fire, and everything I
- 2:36thought about myself challenged. It does not work like that.
- 2:40So the call comes when it comes and the threshold gets crossed
- 2:44whether you're ready or not. And the ordeal, the darkest,
- 2:48hardest part of the Ark, doesn't announce itself as a necessary
- 2:52stage of transformation. It just announces itself.
- 2:55Is everything going wrong simultaneously?
- 2:59And that's the part that I feel the self help industry glosses
- 3:02over. The part where it's not
- 3:04beautiful and the part where you're just trying to get
- 3:07through the day. So the framework matters.
- 3:11Understanding the framework matters because there is a
- 3:14profound difference between suffering randomly and suffering
- 3:18is part of a process that's going somewhere.
- 3:21So random suffering is just pain.
- 3:23It's chaos without meaning. And it's the question that you
- 3:26ask yourself of why is this happening to me?
- 3:29Why are these people doing this to me with no possible answer?
- 3:34And if you reference back to previous videos I've done, I've
- 3:36done a lot on core wounds and I finally hit a point where I said
- 3:40we're not living in them anymore.
- 3:41So random suffering is continuously living in the core
- 3:44wounds, even when you know and can identify and speak about why
- 3:48and how they're there. But suffering within a
- 3:51framework, it's still hard. But I want to be clear that
- 3:55though it's hard, naming the stage doesn't make it easier,
- 3:59but it shifts something fundamental and it moves you
- 4:01from what is wrong with me to where am I in this arc?
- 4:06And that shift from victim of circumstance to protagonist of a
- 4:10story that's still unfolding, it changes everything about how you
- 4:14move through it. So by understanding the hero's
- 4:18journey, you're going to be able to shift out of that victim
- 4:22mentality and shift into, wait a minute, I know what I'm doing, I
- 4:26understand why this is happening, and I'm taking the
- 4:28steps forward. That's all I want from all of
- 4:32you guys, for all of you guys, and for myself is just forward
- 4:35progression and moving through things and actually actively
- 4:39integrating them. So there's 12 stages and I'm
- 4:42going to walk you through each of them just very briefly.
- 4:46So stage 1, the ordinary world, it's your life before it's
- 4:49comfortable enough, or maybe at least just familiar enough.
- 4:54But there's usually a low hum of something's not right that
- 4:58you've gotten very, very good at ignoring.
- 5:01And then stage 2 is the call to adventure.
- 5:03So something comes along that disrupts it.
- 5:06It might be a loss, it might be an ending.
- 5:09It might be a moment of clarity that you did not ask for, like
- 5:13the light bulb turning on and something knocks on the door of
- 5:17your comfortable life and refuses to be ignored anymore.
- 5:21So then stage 3 is refusal of the call.
- 5:24You say no or not yet, or maybe later, or just avoid and put it
- 5:29on the back burner. But here's what I need you to
- 5:33hear. This is not a state or this is a
- 5:35stage. Excuse me?
- 5:35It is not a character flaw. So your nervous system is doing
- 5:39exactly what it's designed to do.
- 5:42It's trying to refuse change because change is unfamiliar and
- 5:46it's uncomfortable. And your system is like, but
- 5:48we're used to this. No, not anymore.
- 5:51And the problem is only when the refusal becomes permanent
- 5:54because the call does not go away.
- 5:56It just gets louder and then it eventually stops asking nicely.
- 6:01And I'm sure just knowing that you can think of a time that
- 6:04there was a change that needed to happen, that you were just
- 6:07avoiding or ignoring or refusing.
- 6:10And then it's like you got kicked off the ledge and it
- 6:12became so much harder than it needed to be.
- 6:15I can think of so many examples in my own life.
- 6:18So then stage 4 is meeting the mentor.
- 6:21So someone or something shows up with what you need for the
- 6:24journey. And it might be a teacher,
- 6:27literal or figuratively. It might be a book or a
- 6:30conversation that cracks something open or like you're
- 6:34watching. I've had this happen where I'm
- 6:36watching like ATV show or a movie and there's a line in it
- 6:38and I'm like, holy shit. That just gave me so much
- 6:41clarity that I did not realize I needed.
- 6:43Like the lights turn on. And the thing to remember is
- 6:46that this mentor, in whatever form it is, doesn't walk the
- 6:49path for you. They just hand you the torch or
- 6:52in modern days, the flashlight, and they point you toward the
- 6:55door. So then stage 5 is crossing the
- 6:58threshold. And I also refer to this as the
- 7:01liminal space. This is the point of no return.
- 7:04So you step into unfamiliar territory and something ends.
- 7:08There is no going back to exactly what was before.
- 7:12And it is freaking terrifying and absolutely necessary.
- 7:16And anyone who's had a conversation with me knows that
- 7:19one of my favorite phrases is once you see it, you can't Unsee
- 7:22it. That is the stage 5 threshold.
- 7:25You can't go back. You can try, you can try to
- 7:27throw blinders on, but there's no going back at that point.
- 7:31So stage 6 are tests, allies and enemies.
- 7:35So this new world that you've now stepped into, once you've
- 7:37crossed that threshold, it's harder than it was advertised.
- 7:40And that feels like bullshit because you find out who's
- 7:45actually with you. And some of the people that you
- 7:48trusted may reveal themselves not to be people that you can
- 7:51trust. And some people that you were
- 7:54not expecting just show up and they prove themselves.
- 7:57And you get tested in the specific places you haven't done
- 8:00the work yet. It's fun stuff, right?
- 8:02Yeah. Great.
- 8:04But again, necessary. So then stage 7 is the approach.
- 8:09And you're getting closer to the thing that you need to face.
- 8:12It's like that feeling of honestly, it feels like dread
- 8:16building in your gut and like the rock starting to form in
- 8:20your stomach and the pressure is picking up and you can feel it
- 8:24and the stakes are rising and everything is getting more
- 8:27internal and more uncomfortable and more real.
- 8:30That's OK. Keep going because the good
- 8:32stuff is coming. Although the next stage is stage
- 8:358 and that's the ordeal, the ordeal.
- 8:39This is the darkest moment or the crisis point.
- 8:44And while you're inside of it, it feels like proof that
- 8:47something has gone catastrophically wrong.
- 8:50But it is not. It's a stage.
- 8:51That's why knowing this is so helpful, because there will be
- 8:54light on the other end of the side or the other end of the
- 8:56tunnel. So the transformation.
- 8:59It doesn't happen in these big, triumphant, victorious moments.
- 9:03It happens here during the ordeal and the survival of the
- 9:07hardest ones. And right now, before I go any
- 9:10further, because I know that sounds intense and scary, think
- 9:14back to the most difficult things you've been through.
- 9:17That was an ordeal moment. Did you get through it?
- 9:20You did. And guess what?
- 9:21You came out the other side stronger because of it.
- 9:24So that leads us to stage 9, which is the reward.
- 9:27You made it through Huzzah. And you find something on the
- 9:31other side. Maybe it's a truth about
- 9:34yourself, about life, about others.
- 9:36Maybe it's a greater capacity within you.
- 9:40Maybe it's a version of yourself that was only available when you
- 9:44had gone through the ordeal. It's a lot of shedding that
- 9:47happens during the ordeal, shedding belief systems,
- 9:49shedding identities, shedding pieces that really you've
- 9:53outgrown. And the version of yourself that
- 9:58shows up on the other side feels a bit liberated.
- 10:02You're not done yet, but it feels a little bit freer, like
- 10:05your wings can kind of spread a little, but it rarely looks like
- 10:09what you expected. Because at this point, as soon
- 10:11as you cross that threshold, there's no map anymore.
- 10:14But once you've gone through the ordeal, it's real and it's
- 10:17yours. That's your reward.
- 10:19So then you hit stage 10. That's the road back.
- 10:22And now you have to return to ordinary life carrying what you
- 10:25found. And it sounds simple, right?
- 10:27But it's not. Because the world hasn't changed
- 10:31and the people that you interact with haven't necessarily
- 10:34changed. But you have.
- 10:36And navigating that gap is its own challenge because it will
- 10:41start to feel like I've just outgrown my entire life.
- 10:43But don't give up there. Just because you've gone through
- 10:46your own situation doesn't mean other people aren't capable of
- 10:50it. And then stage 11 is the
- 10:52resurrection. So there's one final Test.
- 10:54This is your final exam. It's cumulative.
- 10:57Did you actually integrate what you learned, or are you just
- 11:00performing transformation? This is where real change gets
- 11:04confirmed or revealed as incomplete.
- 11:07This is the challenging part. Think back to like, I think it
- 11:09was two months ago, I did a video about the liminal space
- 11:13and the accumulator and the performer and how you can have
- 11:19all the language. You can have gone through a lot
- 11:22of work and you can talk about your wounds and you can know and
- 11:25identify where they came from and how they're impacting you.
- 11:28But are you actually making intentional change to move
- 11:32beyond that? This is the test for it.
- 11:35So then you hit stage 12. That's the return with the
- 11:37elixir. So you return changed because
- 11:40you went through your final Test.
- 11:42And if you hit stage 12, guess what?
- 11:44You passed it and you bring something back with you.
- 11:47And it's not just for yourself, it's for all the people around
- 11:50you because the journey that you've been on is never only
- 11:53about you. Think of the domino effect when
- 11:57you make a shift, like let's say you, you're in a conflict with
- 11:59someone and you shift into a softer state and a softer tone.
- 12:04Often what happens? It might take a second, but that
- 12:06person adjusts with you. And maybe not always, but a lot
- 12:11of times it will. Or if you refuse to take other
- 12:14people's baggage on personally, then by you doing that, you'll
- 12:19see the ripple effects out again, not with everyone.
- 12:21Some people just won't do it and that's OK.
- 12:23That's their journey to take. But you keep changing, you keep
- 12:26growing. So I'll be honest, I have lived
- 12:30through so many iterations of my own hero's journey, I've lost
- 12:35count. But when I was going through it
- 12:38in the past, I didn't know about it.
- 12:41I mean, I knew about it vaguely, but I didn't understand the
- 12:43structure of it and how it showed up.
- 12:45And now I can see it. So I started adopting this and I
- 12:49teach this framework, but I couldn't see it while I was
- 12:52inside any of them in the past, like not in real time.
- 12:57And when I was going through it in the past, looking back, the
- 13:00descent felt like drowning. I felt like everything was just
- 13:05clobbering me and I, I didn't know what to do.
- 13:08And then the ordeal came along and it felt like evidence that
- 13:10something was just fundamentally broken in me, or that I'd effed
- 13:15up big time, or that I just was completely incompetent or
- 13:19whatever. I mean, like all the core wounds
- 13:21came roaring up and all the insecurities and the fears and
- 13:25the second guessing it was all right there because it was
- 13:28testing me. And when I hit the point of the
- 13:32refusal, honestly, I used to feel like I was such a coward
- 13:37for not wanting to do it, but I stepped forward anyways.
- 13:42And I because I have no idea. I was in a process.
- 13:44I just thought my entire life was falling apart.
- 13:47And it was only after and many, many of these rounds of the
- 13:51hero's journey, because by the way, it's not a singular, it's a
- 13:55loop that you keep going through.
- 13:56And the cool thing is once you get the framework and you can
- 13:58identify it, when the next loop, the next time that you need to
- 14:02grow a little bit more comes around, you're prepared.
- 14:04You're not going into a blind. But in the past, sometimes it
- 14:07took me years to actually look back and name it because I just,
- 14:12I was in it and I didn't know. And I can't tell you that
- 14:17knowing would have made it hurt less, but I can say that it
- 14:20would have made it mean something while it was happening
- 14:23instead of just feeling like everything and everyone was
- 14:26against me. And frankly, meaning changes
- 14:29everything about how we survive hard things.
- 14:32So if this is something that you're interested in checking
- 14:35out, I did post about it and I'm going to put the link in the
- 14:40pinned comments and I'll try to do it in the description too.
- 14:43Honestly, my memory sometimes fritzes out on it, but I'm doing
- 14:46a live Zoom Hero's Journey series every Sunday night for 12
- 14:51weeks and it's at 8:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.
- 14:54It's free, it's 30 minutes. We do one stage per week.
- 14:58And I'll give you a brief rundown.
- 14:59So this coming week, tomorrow night actually, because I'm
- 15:02posting this Saturday night, Sunday night, we're on week 3.
- 15:06So it's the refusal of the call. And so how it works is we go
- 15:12into Zoom, you can have your cameras on or off, doesn't
- 15:14matter to me. Mine will be on.
- 15:16So you get to see me. I would prefer everyone's mics
- 15:19off and just so that it's not background noise coming in.
- 15:23And I open with explaining what the week is in this stage.
- 15:27And then I do a little brief synopsis of the previous two
- 15:30weeks and then we go into story time.
- 15:31So I have two characters, a woman and a man living normal
- 15:35life. And every week I tell their
- 15:37hero's journey for that particular stage.
- 15:39So every week builds upon the previous one.
- 15:42And it just is to give you some reference if you're struggling
- 15:47to see how it how this applies to you.
- 15:50And then I have everyone turn their cameras off and we do some
- 15:53somatic breathing, which is literally just put your hands on
- 15:57your upper chest, close your eyes, stay with yourself.
- 15:59If your eyes are open, you're staying outside of you.
- 16:01If your eyes are closed, you're tuning into you and I have you
- 16:04breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth and I
- 16:07bring your attention to what sensations are you feeling?
- 16:10Where are you feeling it? What thoughts are running
- 16:13through your head and just working on getting you to tune
- 16:17into yourself more and more. Because as I said in week 1,
- 16:21which you guys may not have been there for the body, it is the
- 16:25record of the ordinary life. So the more that you tune out
- 16:29from your body, the less tuned into your ordinary life and its
- 16:33impact on you, you are. So then we do that and it just
- 16:38gets you kind of soft and relaxed.
- 16:40And then it's a great time to head to bed if you're Eastern
- 16:43Time or wherever you are. So that's what I'm going to be
- 16:46doing. The link to register will be in
- 16:49the comment. And this journey is hard, but
- 16:53it's supposed to be that way. And frankly, I'm going to
- 16:57challenge you go anyway. There's always going to be hard
- 17:00things. Wouldn't you rather have some
- 17:02foresight and a map and maybe a little flashlight?
- 17:06Yes, I think you would. All right, so I will hopefully
- 17:09see some of you guys tomorrow and otherwise I will be back
- 17:13next time. Have a wonderful, wonderful
- 17:15Saturday night.
