- 1:41Welcome to the Arise Women of God podcast.
- 1:44I'm your host, Tamara K.
- 1:45Anderson, and joining me today is Sharon Leno.
- 1:50Sharon, thanks for being here today.
- 1:52Well, thank you for having me.
- 1:55And I am so excited to have Sharon on the podcast today.
- 1:59She is one of those people who I have known for many years and I look up to her and I want to be like her when I grow up.
- 2:11Honestly and truly, I'm like, if I can be like Sharon, like she's been in her 70s and 80s.
- 2:17When I hit that point, I feel like God will be like, good job, Tamara.
- 2:25Oh, I'm sure he'll say that before you hit 70.
- 2:31Oh.
- 2:32Anyway, but let me introduce you a little bit to Sharon and we'll dive into her story and why we have her on the show today.
- 2:39So, Sharon Leno's early life, education and career were spent in Michigan.
- 2:45And after graduating from Eastern Michigan University with a master's degree, she became an educator and a curriculum consultant.
- 2:55Her career changed to being a diagnostician for children with special needs after that, and her favorite job, besides being a wife and a mother, was working with the Cooper Country Mental Health as an advocate for medically fragile children.
- 3:13She currently resides in Florida with her daughter, son in law, and two sister cats.
- 3:19So Sharon, we are so excited to have you and to dive into your story a little bit today.
- 3:24And I thought I would kick it off really quick by asking you this question.
- 3:31You were a caretaker for your husband for 12 years?
- 3:35Yes.
- 3:36As.
- 3:37As he was declining and then he passed away.
- 3:40And then you were kind of in a spot where you were like, what now?
- 3:45God?
- 3:46Right.
- 3:47Why don't you take me to that point and talk me through how God dropped this new calling into your lap?
- 3:55Okay.
- 3:56Well, after my husband died and I mean he did take all of my time.
- 4:01He was blind and he was on dialysis.
- 4:05There was a big hole in my life.
- 4:07There was nothing to fill it.
- 4:10I mean, every day I was on a schedule with him and I.
- 4:16I also became quite lonely.
- 4:19But one day a friend of mine.
- 4:23And it wasn't too long.
- 4:25Well, it was in the.
- 4:27My husband died in the fall and it was in the spring.
- 4:30Spring or maybe June.
- 4:33May or June, I don't remember.
- 4:35But a friend from Texas sent me a invitation to Richard Paul Evans Ranch and his Rider Retreat.
- 4:44She could not go and so she thought maybe I would be interested because when I was in Texas we belonged to the same writers group.
- 4:54So it was only a week before the retreat and I had to call and make sure that it was okay if I came because he didn't know me and I sure didn't know him.
- 5:07So I never thought that I would go because I never traveled alone.
- 5:15We traveled a lot abroad and throughout the United States, but never alone.
- 5:21So I was very nervous.
- 5:24And when I arrived at the ranch it was just a very wonderful experience of meeting with other people and especially Richard's mentoring.
- 5:39He's a great teacher.
- 5:41And that started my journey.
- 5:44And then I wrote for probably a year and a half before I was ready to find a publisher.
- 5:55And finding a publisher is very difficult.
- 5:58And I tried self publishers but a lot of them sounded like they were scams and I just was unsure.
- 6:11So my sister in law was.
- 6:13Had friends in the publishing business and she asked them and they recommended small publishers.
- 6:22Flint Hills Publisher was one and there was one in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but they were no longer in operation.
- 6:31And so I wrote a letter and a couple of page.
- 6:35Sent a couple pages of my book after I had gone online and looked at her webpage and sent them there and she rejected them.
- 6:48So I went back to her webpage because she was an attorney and she was offering advice to people who were publishing.
- 6:56And so I called her and she was going to charge $50 an hour.
- 7:02And we started talking and at the end of the hour, she said, I'm not charging you and send me your book.
- 7:09And that's how it all started.
- 7:12Oh, my goodness.
- 7:14Wow.
- 7:14I just got tingles as you told that story.
- 7:16Sharon, that is amazing.
- 7:20It's.
- 7:20Yeah.
- 7:21Writing and publishing is quite the journey.
- 7:24And I think, I think people who haven't done it think it's easier than it really is.
- 7:30Oh, it's.
- 7:31It's not easy.
- 7:32And I'll tell you, especially getting a publisher, I feel that was a miracle of God.
- 7:37And I feel that it was his leading that made me go back and try and talk to her and try and figure out what to do.
- 7:48I.
- 7:48I really feel it was all God.
- 7:51Absolutely.
- 7:52And, and I, I know it was because he called you into this.
- 7:56Now, I'd love to have you share what you felt God calling you to write and how you were able to weave faith into it.
- 8:05Would you mind sharing that?
- 8:07Well, I always say God and I were partners in my writing because I came up with ideas that I never had before.
- 8:17I.
- 8:17My love of children, for one thing, started me writing and realizing the problems I had now when Covet hit.
- 8:30And that's when I was starting to write.
- 8:33I was online and learning to be online.
- 8:37And I saw how children's education was being handled during this time and how many parents did not have the time to make sure their children were on computers and how many children did not have computers.
- 8:53I mean, there's just so many problems with their education at that time.
- 8:59And so I started also thinking of the fear of COVID and what that was doing.
- 9:08And that's how I started out with scaredy and children being afraid because they were afraid of that time.
- 9:16They were afraid of people, they were afraid to be in public.
- 9:19They had to wear these masks.
- 9:22And it was just a difficult time.
- 9:26And from that point, then I went on to writing other books on anger that children have trouble listening and sadness that children feel.
- 9:40And someone said, well, where did I get all these feelings from?
- 9:44Or these ideas for the children?
- 9:47And I guess I look back on my own childhood, my own life, and I interjected some of those feelings in because they're just normal feelings that everyone has, whether it's a child or an adult.
- 10:02Yeah, no, you're absolutely right.
- 10:04We all deal with fear.
- 10:05We all deal with anger.
- 10:06We, you know, to some degree.
- 10:09I love that you're targeting elementary school children and, and your books are, are chapter books, right?
- 10:15Yes.
- 10:15Yes.
- 10:16And they're faith based, they're fantasy, and they, even though they're Clean and they're faith based.
- 10:24It's not like in your face.
- 10:27But I have put the Night of Light in there, which is representative of Jesus to show that he's in the first book.
- 10:35He was there in the background and he was always there when he was needed.
- 10:40But he never came out and participated with them until they really needed him.
- 10:48Because I feel that as a, even as adults we do that God makes sure that we try and solve problems and decisions ourselves and work for what we want.
- 11:02He's not a Santa Claus, he's not a therapist.
- 11:05He's our God and our creator and he is someone we can always depend on to help us.
- 11:14And so that's how I more or less developed all the books.
- 11:18And as the books progress, then the Night of a Light became more and more part of the book.
- 11:25I, I love that you, that God inspired you, how to weave that in into your fantasy story.
- 11:30And I love children love learning through that, that creative fantasy.
- 11:35In fact, reading fantasy is one of my favorite genres as an adult.
- 11:40One of several years ago, I, I think it might have even been during COVID I was talking to a friend and I'm like, I need a new series to read.
- 11:47And she handed me this first book of a series.
- 11:50I.
- 11:51And she goes, try this.
- 11:52And I went home and I read it.
- 11:54I like, I think I devoured it in like one day.
- 11:57And I go back to him like, do you have book two?
- 12:01She goes, I have it on Kindle.
- 12:02But she goes, I bet they have it at the library.
- 12:05And so I run over to the library and I'm looking in the young adult section.
- 12:09Cannot find it.
- 12:10Cannot find it.
- 12:11Finally, I go up to the library and like, I need book two of this series.
- 12:14And she said, oh, that's in the children's section.
- 12:17And I'm like, oh, of course it is.
- 12:22Oh.
- 12:23The characters that I try and create are not scary, but they're fun and they have their own problems and, and follies and children can identify, I think, with, with them and they laugh at them and some are maybe
- 12:43a little spooky, but they're not so scary that they cannot handle it.
- 12:49I love this.
- 12:50Well, Sharon, this, it's so fun to hear you talk about these books and these characters.
- 12:55We will be sure to drop links if anybody's interested in, in the show notes so that you can find Sharon's book series, it's the Adventures of Lucer.
- 13:06So we'll be sure to, to talk more about that.
- 13:08But before we get to that, you mentioned at the beginning, finding a publisher was an obstacle you faced.
- 13:15And I think as women of God, sometimes in our minds, we're like, well, if God calls me to do it, it's.
- 13:21It's going to be like this sunshiny path I'm going to walk, and all the doors are just going to fly right open.
- 13:29And it's not always the case.
- 13:31Sometimes it's a battle to go down that path.
- 13:34I think, because we're being called by God, the adversary throws all this stuff at us, and it's almost like more of a war zone as we step into whatever God's calling us to do.
- 13:43Because God's like, come on, I'll open the right door at the right time.
- 13:46And he does.
- 13:48But the adversary is like, oh, no, she's going to do something good.
- 13:52Quick, everybody stop her.
- 13:56And so I'd love to have you talk about maybe some of the other obstacles you faced along the way besides finding a publisher.
- 14:04Social media was a huge obstacle.
- 14:08I mean, if I said I would never get on social media, but now I'm on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok and trying to learn all of them was not even a love relationship, but a hate relationship.
- 14:27And if it wasn't for my daughter and friends helping me, I don't think I could have made it.
- 14:33But God supplied them when I needed them.
- 14:36In the beginning, I kept calling Instagram Postagram or Toastagram.
- 14:42And my friend from the writers retreat, Tasha, really took me under my her wing and showed me how to post and then entered my daughter.
- 14:55I love creating the the post, but when it comes to putting it online and writing the description, I always make mistakes.
- 15:05I misspell, I hurry through.
- 15:10And it's taken her a long time to get me to slow down, to check my spelling and to do it right.
- 15:19And even to this day, I still here.
- 15:22You must take that down because you misspelled this word.
- 15:28So that still is a challenge.
- 15:32But even finding the time now, I'm organized.
- 15:35And I.
- 15:36I tell you, you have to be organized when you post.
- 15:38You have to learn to schedule.
- 15:40Thank you, Tamara.
- 15:42In.
- 15:42In the classes that you gave me, I learned to schedule my post.
- 15:46And so I don't have to do it every morning, posting, posting.
- 15:51And then I have to take time to make sure I heart or friend other people.
- 15:57You also taught me how to use meta business, which is still difficult, but I'm getting it.
- 16:05I'm not giving up.
- 16:08Just that.
- 16:09That has been the biggest bane of marketing for me, but the blessing I have from God is that Gretchen is with me because we've sold 1881 books, and without her help, I never would have been able to do
- 16:28it.
- 16:29But God sent her to vendor for me to set up booths and tear them down and to find places where we can go sign books.
- 16:41But in marketing is the.
- 16:43The second most difficult thing.
- 16:46And.
- 16:46And trying to get your book out there, trying to get it on different platforms, build your base so that others can find it, and it's slow.
- 16:56Very, very slow.
- 16:57No, I.
- 16:58I love what you've shared here, Sharon, because learning new skills is hard at any age.
- 17:05But I especially look at you, and this is one of the reasons I love and admire Sharon.
- 17:10I mean, here she is tackling Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
- 17:16And.
- 17:16How old are you now, Sharon?
- 17:18Should I even ask?
- 17:20Sure.
- 17:20At this age, I don't care.
- 17:22I'm 82.
- 17:24At 82, and she's out there and she's learning new skills.
- 17:28And that is one of the reasons I love and admire Sharon, is that, you know, at an age where a lot of people are just using their phones for.
- 17:39I'm using it as a phone, I'm taking pictures with it, and I use it when I'm driving.
- 17:44That is it.
- 17:44You know, that not learning new apps, like, I am so impressed that you took that challenge.
- 17:52All right, God, you want me to be an author.
- 17:54I'm writing the book.
- 17:55I'm publishing the book.
- 17:57Now I need to learn social media, which is so overwhelming.
- 18:02And yet you have approached it with teachability and with an openness.
- 18:07And I love that you also shared that the right people came along at the right time to help you, because God doesn't call us to do these things without sending the right people to step in at the right
- 18:19time and help us through things.
- 18:21And so I think that's what turns things from being so overwhelming to more doable.
- 18:28Right.
- 18:29And he does send people and he opens new doors.
- 18:32I just have to real quickly tell you this One door that he recently opened my.
- 18:39On my car, I have signs that advertise the series of the books.
- 18:45And my daughter took it to the car wash that we normally go to.
- 18:51Well, it was broken down, so the owner was making sure his people were washing it by hand.
- 18:57But afterwards, when she was putting the signs back on the car, he came out and said, I need to talk to your mother.
- 19:05You all need to look into homeschoolers.
- 19:08There was a huge conference.
- 19:10They say it's the biggest in the United States for homeschoolers in Orlando.
- 19:16And the Tickets, I think, were $150 a piece.
- 19:20And he gave us two tickets to go and see everything that they had so that we could be a vendor next year.
- 19:29And so we went and it was amazing.
- 19:33I think there was about 30,000 people there.
- 19:36Wow.
- 19:37Parents.
- 19:38We went around to the vendors and it was wonderful to see mothers and fathers and children and grandparents there also.
- 19:46So he.
- 19:47That's an opportunity he gave us.
- 19:50And then the classes that you gave that we had Lamyra in, she encouraged me to do like a.
- 19:57Not a textbook, but a curriculum type book to go along with the series and helped develop that.
- 20:06So it is the people that you have that the Lord has you meet and has you work with.
- 20:14And it just seems like it's unending.
- 20:17Well, and isn't it great that at every juncture that you might be coming to that God already has the solution?
- 20:25And some of those things, he just literally drops in your lap.
- 20:29I mean, I think of the miracle of you, first of all, getting the.
- 20:33The ticket to go to the retreat, your friend texting you or emailing you, however she did, and then here him opening this new venue of you need to help homeschooling parents and giving you the resources to do that,
- 20:48because your books fit perfectly with homeschooling parents, especially with this new resource guide that you have that goes along with your books.
- 20:56It's so, so amazing.
- 20:57We'll have to be sure to link that in the show notes as well, because it is a fantastic guide for anyone who wants to use the books as curriculum and helping children overcome their fears, their anger, listening, you
- 21:12know, all those things.
- 21:13Because kids that age struggle with it.
- 21:16And adults too, right?
- 21:18Absolutely.
- 21:20No matter what your age is.
- 21:22Absolutely.
- 21:23Absolutely.
- 21:24So, Sharon, what would you say to someone whether they're in their 70s or maybe they're 30 and they're feeling a calling from God?
- 21:34What would you say to encourage them along their path from the things that you've learned?
- 21:39First of all, I would say to continue in prayer.
- 21:43To me, prayer is powerful and God answers our prayer.
- 21:48Then I.
- 21:49I'm just telling you what has worked for me.
- 21:51Okay.
- 21:53Follow the leading that God has laid on your heart.
- 21:57If he constantly.
- 22:00It keeps coming up and keeps coming up in your mind, in your heart, then follow through and ask him for help to show you how and when you should do certain things.
- 22:13And I also use the study of the Bible to try and find answers that I need to find.
- 22:22I love that.
- 22:23Do you have a favorite Bible verse that has helped you through all of this?
- 22:26You know, Can I give you three?
- 22:29Yes, please do.
- 22:30Because sometimes, sometimes one will resonate with us, and then another time, another.
- 22:35That's how I find my favorite verses.
- 22:37It's at different points in my life when I've needed an answ answer, and God literally just drops those verses in our lap.
- 22:43So please share the ones that have become meaningful to you.
- 22:46Okay.
- 22:47These are lifelong ones.
- 22:49Is Philippians 4, 6, and 7.
- 22:55Don't worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding and guards your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
- 23:12And then verse 13 is, I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.
- 23:21So God has really given me peace.
- 23:24He's given me strength, and he's just given me a willingness and energy.
- 23:31I mean, he's given me a sound mind.
- 23:33There's so much I'm grateful for.
- 23:35I have macular degeneration, and yet he's holding that at bay with the shots.
- 23:40So I can still see, and I have glasses to see.
- 23:44I have hearing aids to hear.
- 23:48And he's just always there helping me.
- 23:52I love those verses and that verse 13 is my mantra as well, that in his strength we can do all things.
- 24:00And I think you're a perfect example of that, of proceeding forward with faith, not letting age or anything else hold you back.
- 24:08Like, okay, I'm going to learn this.
- 24:10I'm going to do this.
- 24:11Trusting that he'll open the way.
- 24:13And he has.
- 24:14It's.
- 24:14It's so, so miraculous to me to see just the little miracles that are truly ginormous, miracles that have opened along your path to get things done.
- 24:28So it didn't matter what, what the adversary threw at you.
- 24:31You're like, nope, we're forging forward.
- 24:33We're going ahead.
- 24:35And, And I love that you explained it.
- 24:38It's just following those feelings in your heart.
- 24:40Right, right.
- 24:42And, you know, the.
- 24:43One of the great things is when we're selling books, we find conversations with people about God and about Jesus that we can share, you know, and even pray with people.
- 24:58And so to me, that is an important mission of our.
- 25:01Our work.
- 25:03Yeah.
- 25:05Now, there is something special that you have also done with these books, and it's getting in.
- 25:10Into the hands of those who can't afford to buy them.
- 25:15Would you mind telling me a little bit about some of the programs that God has kind of opened up to you so that you can get his love and a message to those who need it most?
- 25:26Just before Christmas last year, we had a drive where I asked people to share in giving books.
- 25:36The.
- 25:37The.
- 25:37Well, at that time, there was a series of three books to children that cost $30, that if they could pay for $3, then we could get it in the hands of 300 children, which we did.
- 25:52And we sent that.
- 25:53We gave it to the Salvation army, to an orphanage and to a children's home, and to individuals that we would come in contact that we knew that could not afford them.
- 26:09And then some of the monies that we've had from the books have also helped the homeless and the poor.
- 26:18I love that your generosity and that you're doing this with an.
- 26:25With an eye single to God's glory.
- 26:28Right.
- 26:28That you are working to do things his way.
- 26:31Yes.
- 26:32To.
- 26:32To help and love and serve his children on Earth.
- 26:36And you are such a great example of that.
- 26:40Now, Sharon, before we wrap up, I would love for you to tell me where people can find you and your books and just.
- 26:49Why don't you share that and.
- 26:50And the.
- 26:50The resource if you're looking for.
- 26:53If you're homeschooling, you need to teach.
- 26:56Use this as a teaching thing with your children.
- 26:58Tell us all about that.
- 27:00Okay.
- 27:01You can find me on Amazon, of course, and on Barnes and Nobles, and you can go to my website, which is Sharon lenoauthor.com and buy my books there if you want, I will mail them to you.
- 27:17The curriculum guide you will have to email me@sharon eleno gmail.com.
- 27:25you can find me on Kindle if.
- 27:29If you.
- 27:29Jo, if you have joined Kindle, they're free.
- 27:32If not, then there's a small cost.
- 27:37The latest book we had, we put all four books under one cover.
- 27:43And so that is also on Amazon, but I'm on Tick Tock.
- 27:47I'm on Facebook and I'm on Instagram and YouTube.
- 27:53You are all over the place.
- 27:54My goodness gracious.
- 27:56Look at.
- 27:56Look at how you've given God your few little fishes and he has multiplied them, right?
- 28:01Oh, he has, yes.
- 28:03And I really want them to be multiplied more so that I can give more.
- 28:09And he.
- 28:10I.
- 28:10He's still working with me on patience.
- 28:12And I know it's all in God's time.
- 28:15And even if it's after I'm gone.
- 28:17That's good.
- 28:18You are leaving a legacy of faith not only for your own family, but for anyone who hears your story, that they can hear your story and find things in it that are motivating to them.
- 28:31I know it sure is motivating to me.
- 28:33To keep trying and working and moving forward.
- 28:36So, so, so beautiful.
- 28:39And Sharon, would you tell me the titles of all of your books as well?
- 28:44Okay.
- 28:45Book one is Scardy and that deals with Rudy's fear.
- 28:51Book two is Wandering Ears, which deal we add Josie to the group and she doesn't listen, but neither does the queen listen that they rescue.
- 29:02Book three is Tame that Flame, which deals with Billy's anger.
- 29:08And book four is Sticky Sadness, which deals with grieving.
- 29:14And so you can buy them individually now or in a box set.
- 29:17Is that right?
- 29:19It's not a box set, but it's all under one.
- 29:22Nice cover because they are paper paperback.
- 29:27Oh, that is so cool.
- 29:29And you have a couple on audible as well, don't you?
- 29:32Yes.
- 29:33Book one, Scaredy is on audible.
- 29:35And book three, Tame tha Flame is on audible.
- 29:40And that's especially important.
- 29:41I know my son Nathan, who has special needs.
- 29:44He likes to listen to a book while he reads it.
- 29:47And so I've been able to get the audible and the physical copy of the book and he will follow along with Sharon's book.
- 29:53It is so cute to watch.
- 29:56That's good.
- 29:57That is good.
- 29:58Yes.
- 29:58He's 26, but his.
- 30:00He.
- 30:00He reads book at that books at that level.
- 30:03So they are perfect.
- 30:04Perfect for him.
- 30:05So I'm thankful you wrote them because I am even a beneficia of your talents.
- 30:10So thank you for doing that.
