Latest / Clydesdale Media Podcast / Lunch with the Clydesdale - Are there New Developments with the Sale
Transcript
- 0:03So the sale is back on.
- 0:06Or is it?
- 0:10We'll see next.
- 0:24I love the chase and the hunt and
- 0:26I set the pace when I'm running.
- 0:27I always take what I want and I
- 0:29always give it one hundred.
- 0:30Don't need a bank, no I'm funded.
- 0:32Play the game like it's nothing.
- 0:33I'm always thankful for something.
- 0:35Don't take for granted, stay humble.
- 0:36Now wake up!
- 0:38It's time to look at the enemy.
- 0:40Look in the mirror if he is no
- 0:41friend to me.
- 0:44What is going on, everybody?
- 0:45It is lunchtime.
- 0:47Good to see everybody.
- 0:48We got Meredith in the chat.
- 0:49We got some Shay, Kenneth, Corey.
- 0:52What is going on, guys?
- 0:54Good to be with you today.
- 0:57It is Thursday.
- 0:58Man, what a week.
- 1:01I'm in the middle of having to write
- 1:02a training document.
- 1:03It's one of my least favorite things in
- 1:05the world to do.
- 1:07So just trying to get through it,
- 1:08trying to get through the week.
- 1:10Hopefully I can get all that done by
- 1:12tomorrow and be done with it so I
- 1:14can clear my slate going into the weekend
- 1:18and into next week.
- 1:20So there's a lot kind of going on.
- 1:24And news is breaking left and right.
- 1:27And so I wanted to address it.
- 1:31Barbell Spin just posted a video maybe ten
- 1:34minutes ago to his Instagram.
- 1:39But yesterday,
- 1:41Barbell Spin broke the news,
- 1:43and I'm not going to reiterate everything.
- 1:45If you want to know everything that's
- 1:46going on with this story,
- 1:48go to the Barbell Spin.
- 1:49He has all the information.
- 1:52I just want to talk about it more
- 1:54at a thirty thousand foot perspective,
- 1:57and that is that apparently there is new
- 2:01buyers who have jumped into the mix to
- 2:04buy CrossFit and
- 2:07It is Wade Diebner and Mark Mastrov.
- 2:13They are one of them own twenty four
- 2:16hour fitness, crunch fitness,
- 2:18some other things.
- 2:20The other one is an investor.
- 2:23Um,
- 2:23there's a trail that's been goes on where,
- 2:26uh, there's some evidence that,
- 2:28that things have happened.
- 2:29There was an interview,
- 2:31there was an interview done, uh,
- 2:34by someone,
- 2:34a prominent media member in the, um,
- 2:36high rock space confirming some of this
- 2:40stuff.
- 2:41So all of that being said, it, it,
- 2:45it was a ninety degree turn for me.
- 2:48yesterday when i heard this information
- 2:50because the news i was hearing prior to
- 2:54that is that the sale had been completely
- 2:57stalled because there is a there is an
- 3:02issue with the sale that brookshire brook
- 3:08brookshire partners do they want to give
- 3:11away with the sale um there's a liability
- 3:15issue that they want to give away
- 3:17the buyers do not want to take that
- 3:19on.
- 3:20And that has been the point that has
- 3:22stalled everything.
- 3:24Everybody has walked away because of that
- 3:27piece in the negotiations.
- 3:31And so that is everything I was hearing
- 3:33as late as late last week.
- 3:37So for all this to pop off in
- 3:40a, in the, the,
- 3:41these last few days has been wild for
- 3:44me.
- 3:45Um,
- 3:49uh corey leonard i feel like brian has
- 3:51a team of people in a darkened room
- 3:52with different screens going at the same
- 3:54time um i'm so ready to just find
- 3:58out what the new direction will be and
- 3:59move on uh wayne short interesting post
- 4:03that's been put up on ig with wfp
- 4:05saying they've met with both yeah i'm
- 4:07gonna get to that in a second wayne
- 4:09um
- 4:11So there was all this stuff.
- 4:13There was some tweet shares,
- 4:17and then those subsequently got deleted.
- 4:21But the story is that they are in
- 4:22a supposedly, allegedly,
- 4:25in a ninety-day exclusivity deal to make
- 4:33the buy,
- 4:34meaning the buy would happen late January.
- 4:38And now it's time for them to do
- 4:40their due diligence with open books,
- 4:43allegedly,
- 4:45to kind of figure all of this out.
- 4:49My assumption is if the same issue exists,
- 4:52I don't know why another buyer would take
- 4:54on that liability or potential liability,
- 4:59but it is what it is.
- 5:03As of this morning,
- 5:05I didn't really believe that this was a
- 5:06true piece,
- 5:08and I knew that Spin would keep digging.
- 5:10I'm not going to try to do his
- 5:11job for him.
- 5:12I will just let him report,
- 5:14and I will just give my opinion on
- 5:16the thing.
- 5:17But then Roger Nilsson is the European…
- 5:33event coordinator for WFP.
- 5:36He went on a Swedish podcast,
- 5:38and he leaked a bunch of information.
- 5:42And you can go to Spin's Instagram to
- 5:44see that.
- 5:46But I'm just going to give the bullet
- 5:48points that he gives right here.
- 5:52In this podcast,
- 5:53he had AI translate it from Swedish.
- 5:57WFP apparently talking to a group who is
- 5:59trying to buy CrossFit at the Rogue
- 6:00Invitational.
- 6:02If that group actually buys CrossFit,
- 6:03the twenty twenty six CrossFit game season
- 6:05will change.
- 6:07And bullet three,
- 6:08in case that doesn't happen,
- 6:11WFP has had meetings with Dave Castro and
- 6:13others within CrossFit to discuss a
- 6:15potential collaboration.
- 6:18a bullet for that collaboration would be
- 6:20centered around quarterfinals as that's
- 6:22when WFP wants to have its twenty twenty
- 6:24six tour stop one in Mallorca.
- 6:29So a lot to break down there,
- 6:30apparently WFP is going forward as they
- 6:34believe there is some validity to this
- 6:36group buying it as they have had meetings
- 6:38with them at the Rogue Invitational,
- 6:40which was a couple of weeks ago.
- 6:44my assumption is if they did sign a
- 6:46ninety-day exclusivity deal,
- 6:48there would be an NDA associated with that
- 6:51where they're really not supposed to be
- 6:53talking about it.
- 6:55But as we know in this space,
- 6:58it's really hard for people to keep their
- 6:59mouth shut.
- 7:01And so, plans have to be made,
- 7:04things have to be done,
- 7:06and apparently WFP is trying to make...
- 7:11their season plans,
- 7:12and they can't do it if they don't
- 7:14know where CrossFit is going to fall on
- 7:16the calendar,
- 7:18which is a whole other story.
- 7:21So that is where we are today.
- 7:25I'm not warm and fuzzy about these new
- 7:27owners.
- 7:29Their history is a franchise model.
- 7:32I think that would flop tremendously if
- 7:35they were to attempt to bring that into
- 7:38the CrossFit space.
- 7:39They would lose every OG CrossFit gym
- 7:43because I've been at affiliate gatherings
- 7:46and the affiliate owners are adamant about
- 7:49they do not ever want to be a
- 7:51franchisee, ever.
- 7:55So it's going to be very,
- 7:58very interesting.
- 8:01Chattanoofy.
- 8:03I think the timing of the leak is
- 8:05interesting.
- 8:05Basically,
- 8:06the deadest time of the space after all
- 8:08the big events before the next season.
- 8:11What I would say to that is it's
- 8:13interesting that the WFP feels like they
- 8:15have to leak this now when they haven't
- 8:18even promoted their own event during this
- 8:20dead time,
- 8:21which would be a perfect time to do
- 8:22that, yet we've seen nothing from them.
- 8:27Chetanufi goes on to say,
- 8:29makes me think about what Kotler said on
- 8:30your show last week about how he felt
- 8:33the season next year is not written in
- 8:35pen or Sharpie.
- 8:36Yeah,
- 8:38I think there are people that know what
- 8:40some things that are going on and there
- 8:41are others that don't.
- 8:44Or at least they know that there's chaos
- 8:48going on.
- 8:54Didn't CrossFit already publish their
- 8:55timeline?
- 8:57they did publish a timeline for the
- 8:59CrossFit game season.
- 9:06What if what these new owners do is
- 9:08good?
- 9:09Probably not, but who knows?
- 9:11I don't think anybody knows,
- 9:12but if you're going to buy CrossFit,
- 9:21you have people who have run businesses
- 9:23under this umbrella independently and
- 9:26created their own ecosystem locally.
- 9:30And if you don't get their buy-in,
- 9:33they are going to leave in droves.
- 9:37So it's not like the new owners are
- 9:38going to have a lot of time to,
- 9:41to prove this.
- 9:44And I think that we're,
- 9:45we're at a point in the CrossFit,
- 9:50that people don't want words anymore.
- 9:56We've had words upon words upon words.
- 9:59They want to see action.
- 10:00They want to see plans put in place.
- 10:02They want to see what the future is.
- 10:06All this limbo and all this word mashup,
- 10:10word salad is not going to carry any
- 10:13weight moving forward.
- 10:15CrossFit has done the word salad stuff.
- 10:19WFP has done the word salad stuff and
- 10:21made promise after promise after promise
- 10:24that we never saw come to fruition.
- 10:30And so I think people are just tired
- 10:31of that.
- 10:33And the new owners are going to have
- 10:34to come in
- 10:36hard, fast, and heavy.
- 10:38If they're going to make any impact and
- 10:40they're going to retain any of the
- 10:42affiliates and they're going to make a
- 10:44difference,
- 10:45they better have a plan coming in.
- 10:51I'm telling you like right off the bat
- 10:53and there has to be action steps to
- 10:56it, action steps,
- 10:59or they're going to lose people.
- 11:05I find it hard to believe that new
- 11:06owners would come in and just toss out
- 11:08a published timeline.
- 11:11I don't know.
- 11:14I work in a world of state government
- 11:16where my boss can change every four years
- 11:19after an election.
- 11:21I am telling you that there have been
- 11:23governors that have walked in the door and
- 11:26scrapped plans and projects that have been
- 11:29worked on for years to start their own
- 11:32agenda and their own ideas and their own
- 11:35timelines.
- 11:38So to say it wouldn't happen,
- 11:41I think is being naive.
- 11:43It just depends on how these new owners
- 11:46look at it, how they,
- 11:48how important it is to them to get
- 11:50this fixed, in their opinion, righted,
- 11:53or to get to their plan.
- 11:55If they want to do it immediately,
- 11:57they're going to do it immediately.
- 12:04So could they come in balls to the
- 12:08wall?
- 12:09I think they have to.
- 12:11I think if they don't take action
- 12:13immediately and it's more word salad,
- 12:16you're going to lose more people than you
- 12:18retain.
- 12:20I think you,
- 12:20you're going to have to show people what
- 12:22you're about and it's going to take all
- 12:29action.
- 12:33So that's where we are with this.
- 12:34This morning I was, um,
- 12:39I was of the belief that I didn't
- 12:40think it was a serious bid.
- 12:46I still am not sure.
- 12:47I'm still not sure it's a serious bid.
- 12:51If WFP are talking to both CrossFit and
- 12:55the potential new buyers,
- 12:57then I'm not sure they believe it's a
- 13:01serious bid.
- 13:04there is still this ninety day window
- 13:06where they can back out pretty easily.
- 13:12And again, I mean,
- 13:13I've heard over and over again how why
- 13:16the sales have failed recently is that
- 13:21there is this thing or things that have
- 13:25a liability associated with them that
- 13:28Brookshire wants to get rid of.
- 13:31And that the new owners do not want
- 13:32to take on.
- 13:34And that is what has killed the sale
- 13:36over and over and over again.
- 13:40And I don't think that has gone anywhere.
- 13:46So.
- 13:49That's where we are with the sale.
- 13:51I saw earlier that I think it was
- 13:53Larry said,
- 13:54he just wants to know what the direction
- 13:56is.
- 13:57I just,
- 13:58I'm so ready to find out what the
- 13:59new direction will be and move on.
- 14:01I think we all are, but I,
- 14:05I don't see it happening before Christmas
- 14:07for sure.
- 14:09I think we're stuck.
- 14:12I think we're stuck in this middle ground,
- 14:15at least into the holidays.
- 14:22Wayne Short,
- 14:23Greg created CrossFit to proliferate the
- 14:25methodology not to grow a company.
- 14:27Any plan short of that will come to
- 14:29meet resistance from a large majority of
- 14:32the community.
- 14:34Yeah, I mean, yeah.
- 14:41I don't disagree.
- 14:44I'm of the belief that it's okay to
- 14:46make money and it's okay to grow a
- 14:48company.
- 14:51But you can't lose your North Star in
- 14:53the process, whatever that may be.
- 14:56And I've talked about this several times
- 14:58on the show.
- 14:59I think the thing that has been lacking
- 15:01in CrossFit since twenty eighteen has been
- 15:05a North Star,
- 15:06something to shoot for a goal to achieve.
- 15:12I think there's an obvious one sitting out
- 15:14there.
- 15:15To go after the GLP ones,
- 15:18to say we have a better alternative to
- 15:23that, just come see us.
- 15:28But I don't know.
- 15:31We'll see what happens.
- 15:37I've heard stories about twenty four hour
- 15:39fitness that aren't warm and fuzzy.
- 15:42So that concerns me a great deal.
- 15:45If these are truly the buyers of CrossFit.
- 15:50The original press release said,
- 15:52like many people,
- 15:54celebrities from the sports and
- 15:56entertainment world would be involved.
- 15:59That seemed very vague.
- 16:03And one of those kind of promises to
- 16:07shine a light on something that I don't
- 16:09know if they're... Again,
- 16:12all these promises and all these words
- 16:14mean nothing to people right now.
- 16:17So we'll see.
- 16:23Uh, my suggestion is keep following,
- 16:24go to Instagram, follow the barbell spin.
- 16:28He's going to have the latest information
- 16:30that dude is diving in hard right now.
- 16:33And, uh, the news is going to pop.
- 16:36Um,
- 16:36I subscribe to his breaking news stuff.
- 16:39I suggest that, that you guys do that,
- 16:42uh,
- 16:42because you'll know as soon as things are
- 16:44released that way,
- 16:47I'm just here to give my opinion about
- 16:49things.
- 16:49And I, uh,
- 16:50I can't do it as well as he
- 16:51does.
- 16:53So please,
- 16:54please go check him out for sure.
- 16:59The other thing about WFP,
- 17:04and Hiller kind of stole my thunder on
- 17:05this this morning,
- 17:07but I'm going to dive into this a
- 17:08little bit,
- 17:12is they put out this Instagram piece about
- 17:17the
- 17:20And they talk about some flashy language
- 17:23about consistency, support,
- 17:27global exposure.
- 17:30And why this really triggered this as a
- 17:33topic for today is in addition to this
- 17:36being posted, as a media member,
- 17:39I got an email from WFP.com.
- 17:45saying, Hey, if you forgot,
- 17:47we're doing Copenhagen in December and you
- 17:50can still apply for media credentials and
- 17:53you can still sign up for accommodations.
- 18:00I have in my whole time in CrossFit
- 18:03as a media member,
- 18:05never have I had to be sent a
- 18:06reminder that an event was coming up and
- 18:10that, Hey, don't forget that.
- 18:13Go ahead and apply for your media
- 18:14credentials.
- 18:16I think that is a worrisome sign that
- 18:19you're reaching out to media a second time
- 18:22to tell them, hey, in case you forgot,
- 18:25we're still here.
- 18:31CrossFit, we just spent the first ten,
- 18:34fifteen minutes on that specific thing.
- 18:40So in this,
- 18:42they're trying to talk about what the
- 18:44twenty twenty six pro card will give an
- 18:46athlete as an advantage that if you're
- 18:50consistent and you show up all season,
- 18:52I think that's the first one.
- 18:53Yeah.
- 18:57Compete, add points,
- 18:58elevate your competitor status.
- 19:01Which I'm not even sure is true,
- 19:03because the way their point system works
- 19:05is you don't even get.
- 19:06Yeah.
- 19:09Holy shit.
- 19:10The news is breaking everywhere.
- 19:12Thanks, Jenny.
- 19:13He just posted a second one about WFP's
- 19:15budget for each event.
- 19:19Okay.
- 19:26Okay.
- 19:28Let's check that out before I get into
- 19:30all this.
- 19:40And WP's budget for each competition is
- 19:51two million.
- 19:52According to Roger Nielsen,
- 19:54WP's European event director.
- 19:56On top of that,
- 19:57there's an unlimited budget,
- 19:58a blank check for traveling as long as
- 20:01you wear a WFP t-shirt.
- 20:08Okay.
- 20:08Okay.
- 20:10Wow.
- 20:12So an unlimited budget to travel.
- 20:17So that explains why Will and company are
- 20:20traveling the world and having all their
- 20:25meetings around the world, apparently.
- 20:27They just have to wear their WFP shirt
- 20:29and it's all covered.
- 20:32I'll go ahead and play the audio.
- 20:34It's tough because this is an AI
- 20:39translation.
- 20:40And I'll try to get back.
- 20:41I'm going to reopen it so that we
- 20:44can hear it from the beginning.
- 20:48Then suddenly someone calls and says, hi,
- 20:51have you run a competition?
- 20:53No, but no, no, no.
- 20:54Take it easy.
- 20:54We pay for everything.
- 20:57And then we do it free of charge.
- 21:00Okay.
- 21:00And then the best athletes in the world
- 21:02come.
- 21:02Okay.
- 21:03So you have two million dollars in budget
- 21:04for each competition and no risk on the
- 21:07budget.
- 21:07Yes.
- 21:08Okay.
- 21:09But we can do that.
- 21:10Right.
- 21:10And then I want you to do it
- 21:11for three years at least.
- 21:14Okay.
- 21:14I can do that.
- 21:15So I want you to travel as much
- 21:17as you can, you know.
- 21:18As long as as much as your wife
- 21:20allows and your wife wants to join,
- 21:22you can travel as much as you want.
- 21:24Unlimited budget and a blank, blank check.
- 21:26I just as long as you travel with
- 21:28a World Fitness Project T-shirt and say
- 21:30that you work for World Fitness Project,
- 21:32you can travel wherever you want and
- 21:33whenever you want.
- 21:36And then suddenly someone calls and says.
- 21:39Wow.
- 21:40So this is for Roger himself.
- 21:42He can travel wherever he wants.
- 21:45long as he wears a wfp shirt and
- 21:46announces that he is working for wfp um
- 21:53and he gets to an unlimited blank check
- 21:57wow what is it like to have that
- 22:00kind of money oh my gosh i am
- 22:04i am never gonna know i'm never ever
- 22:07gonna know uh train olive can i travel
- 22:12for free if i wear a wfp t-shirt
- 22:14hey
- 22:16That'd be nice.
- 22:21So yeah,
- 22:22I'm not going to go through the other
- 22:23slides.
- 22:23I'm just going to talk in generalities.
- 22:26Here we are in this big dead space.
- 22:27And I think it was mentioned that the
- 22:29breaking news on the sale happens during
- 22:31this dead space.
- 22:33I have said over and over again that
- 22:34WFP have made these promises about giving
- 22:39more exposure to people.
- 22:40This is where they are going to help
- 22:43the athletes grow and engage with their
- 22:46audiences and do all that kind of stuff.
- 22:49And every time there's dead space where
- 22:50they can actually get viewers,
- 22:53they're silent.
- 22:54You hear nothing from them.
- 22:56Nothing from them.
- 22:58And here we are in this dead space
- 23:00where they could be promoting Copenhagen.
- 23:02It could be promoting the athletes.
- 23:04They could be doing all this stuff and
- 23:06none of it is happening.
- 23:07They make all these promises.
- 23:09So then they put out this,
- 23:11this thing on Instagram about next year's
- 23:13pro card.
- 23:14And I think they're trying to do a
- 23:15sell job because they,
- 23:17Jenny did a great job in her dense
- 23:19updates this morning showing Hopper and
- 23:22Medeiros,
- 23:23not even training right now for Copenhagen
- 23:26and not planning on training for the next
- 23:28three weeks.
- 23:31How important is that to them?
- 23:33It can't be, it can't be at all.
- 23:38And I also, I've heard, heard,
- 23:41I've also heard that, um,
- 23:46The finals, you don't get paid.
- 23:48The way the contract is based is the
- 23:51tour stops you get paid,
- 23:53and then the finals,
- 23:55it's all about just earning your pro card
- 23:57for next year.
- 23:58So there's no money that you can win.
- 24:01Now,
- 24:02there may be a prize money or something
- 24:04for this event,
- 24:06but there's no contractual guaranteed
- 24:08money for Copenhagen.
- 24:11So they put out this twenty twenty six
- 24:14thing and they're promising the same
- 24:16things they promised before and not and
- 24:18that they did not follow through.
- 24:21Stop making promises.
- 24:23Stop making promises if you're not going
- 24:25to uphold your side of the bargain.
- 24:31That is making people not trust you at
- 24:34all.
- 24:35You're losing trust with the athletes and
- 24:37they're going to walk away.
- 24:39They're going to walk away.
- 24:41There's going to be athletes that need the
- 24:43opportunity.
- 24:44And I think that is where they're going
- 24:46to have to morph from what they thought
- 24:49they could be and take on the games
- 24:51to like a G League in the NBA
- 24:55or minor leagues in baseball.
- 24:57And they're going to be able to give
- 24:59some of the athletes some...
- 25:02potential exposure that don't get it on
- 25:04the regular.
- 25:06The elite athletes can do it on
- 25:08themselves.
- 25:08Their own channels are doing better than
- 25:10WFP.
- 25:12They don't need WFP,
- 25:14but stop making promises that you're going
- 25:16to give them something that they don't
- 25:17already have.
- 25:19It's not going to, it's not going to,
- 25:24it's just ridiculous.
- 25:26It's ridiculous where they're at.
- 25:31um they should pay spectators to show up
- 25:33instead that would that would be a start
- 25:40um ortega can't be mad about it i
- 25:45know everybody would take that job if if
- 25:47you can travel i'm not upset at roger
- 25:49for taking the job if someone wants to
- 25:51pay me to travel the world for free
- 25:54sure i mean i would do it uh
- 25:58but it doesn't mean that it's going to
- 26:00be a quality event at the end of
- 26:01the day.
- 26:03If you're doing it for the money,
- 26:04you're not doing it for the right reason
- 26:06to make a quality event.
- 26:08And I think that's probably the grand
- 26:11problem in this whole thing.
- 26:13Walking in with a blank checkbook and
- 26:16getting people that are willing to do it
- 26:17just for the money doesn't make a quality
- 26:21product.
- 26:23You get people that want to do it
- 26:25for the passion of it,
- 26:26for the love of it,
- 26:28just because it's something they want to
- 26:30do and make something great.
- 26:32Then you get a better quality of product,
- 26:35but people just doing it for money.
- 26:38I'm a state employee.
- 26:39I watch,
- 26:40I look around and I see people there
- 26:43just for the money and the quality of
- 26:45work that they do is a shit show.
- 26:48And I think that is a demonstration.
- 26:51When you're there for the money and the
- 26:53money alone,
- 26:54you're only there to collect a check.
- 26:56You're not there to put out the best
- 26:57quality product you could.
- 27:04CrossFit.
- 27:04We all love money.
- 27:05It pays the bills.
- 27:06Trust me.
- 27:07I'm with you.
- 27:08I want to pay my bills.
- 27:10But
- 27:11I put more energy into this that pays
- 27:15me less than my job for sure.
- 27:18I mean like way, way,
- 27:20way less because I love this.
- 27:23My job,
- 27:24I do it and I do it as
- 27:25best as I can,
- 27:27but I'm there to collect the money to
- 27:28pay the bills to feed my family.
- 27:32And I probably don't put the same effort
- 27:34into that as I do into this thing
- 27:36that I love.
- 27:42Just imagine how much the prize pool for
- 27:43all athletes could be if they didn't do
- 27:45all this traveling.
- 27:46Sounds like fake it till you make it.
- 27:51I get the money to travel for free
- 27:53and all that,
- 27:53but not only does it not mean anything
- 27:55close to what the games means to the
- 27:57athletes,
- 27:58it also prevents them from resting and
- 28:00recovering for the season.
- 28:04They started this thing because they
- 28:05thought they could beat the games.
- 28:07They thought they could become the games.
- 28:10And if they say anything different now,
- 28:12they're lying.
- 28:13This was formed out of a tragedy.
- 28:16They thought that it was the time to
- 28:18take on the games because Lazar died and
- 28:22people were mad about it.
- 28:24What they didn't take into account is the
- 28:26grieving process ends.
- 28:28And then people are like,
- 28:29where does it really matter to go?
- 28:31And where does it matter to go?
- 28:33It matters at the CrossFit Games.
- 28:35And so their foundation is built on a
- 28:37checkbook and a tragedy.
- 28:42The CrossFit Games was built out of
- 28:44something...
- 28:46in two thousand seven that you had all
- 28:50these people competing against each other
- 28:52online and they wanted to bring them
- 28:54together to to find the fittest on earth.
- 28:57And because of that,
- 28:58it's grown out of this grassroots campaign
- 29:01slowly and steadily,
- 29:03and it's become the diamond jewel of the
- 29:06CrossFit season.
- 29:09You can't build something on a tragedy and
- 29:12a checkbook and expect to get the same
- 29:15notoriety and the same status in a year's
- 29:20time.
- 29:21You just can't.
- 29:27You just can't.
- 29:31Mike DeVito, yup,
- 29:32and now all three of their plans include
- 29:34collaborating with the games.
- 29:36They know they effed up.
- 29:39If they are admitting it now that they
- 29:41effed up,
- 29:42it's the first time they've admitted that.
- 29:46And it's going to be interesting to see.
- 29:50The other thing that blew my mind when
- 29:52all this happened,
- 29:53and I'm going to go back to,
- 29:54I wanted it to succeed.
- 29:56My one kickback about the CrossFit Games
- 30:00is the season was never easy to understand
- 30:02after regionals were taken away.
- 30:05After that,
- 30:05the explanation of how the season works
- 30:08got super complicated.
- 30:09I wanted to see if someone could show
- 30:12that a streamlined season that makes sense
- 30:15could work.
- 30:16And so I wanted it to work,
- 30:18at least in that fashion,
- 30:20so that we could prove that there's a
- 30:22way to do a season that makes sense.
- 30:25And they couldn't keep the boat afloat
- 30:28long enough to see that.
- 30:36Ortega, athletes can say no.
- 30:38I think that's the problem.
- 30:39I think they're starting to say no.
- 30:45We had withdrawals at tour stop two.
- 30:48We've now had a handful of withdrawals for
- 30:50the finals.
- 30:53And they're still six weeks out.
- 30:56I'm betting there's going to be another
- 30:58handful of withdrawals at least for the
- 31:00finals.
- 31:07So anyway,
- 31:09the other thing is that's wild to me
- 31:11is that the higher you finish,
- 31:14the more you get on your pro card
- 31:16for the next season.
- 31:17But they don't ever say the dollar amount.
- 31:20Never say the dollar amount.
- 31:23Every pro contract in the United States in
- 31:26basketball, football,
- 31:28prize money at a tennis match,
- 31:30prize money at a golf tournament is public
- 31:32knowledge.
- 31:33Everybody knows how much they make.
- 31:36Everybody.
- 31:37And for some reason,
- 31:38even the CrossFit Games,
- 31:39they publish where you finish,
- 31:42how much you make.
- 31:43If you win an event,
- 31:44this is what you make.
- 31:47And they haven't published anything.
- 31:51We don't know how much the contracts were.
- 31:53We don't know how much anything is at
- 31:58this point.
- 32:00And because of that,
- 32:02their promised transparency that the games
- 32:05never gave them goes out the window
- 32:07because they can't even tell you that.
- 32:14So there it is.
- 32:17I really didn't want to go into a
- 32:18long WFP rant today,
- 32:21but what they've done is just
- 32:26mind-boggling.
- 32:28And I can't believe that if it's a
- 32:30blank checkbook for three years,
- 32:37it's going to be really telling if people
- 32:40withdraw from this last finals,
- 32:45who actually is going to get a pro
- 32:48card.
- 32:49And when we evaluate the people who get
- 32:52the pro card,
- 32:56my guess is it's not going to be
- 32:57the people they think they need to be
- 33:02a top tier contender.
- 33:03And I think there are athletes that just
- 33:05don't want to do it all.
- 33:10So, I mean,
- 33:13we've talked about this in the last week,
- 33:15Jeff Adler, just one rogue,
- 33:20and a hell of a lot of money,
- 33:21hundreds of thousands of dollars.
- 33:24He already missed tour stop to his chance
- 33:27to come back from that.
- 33:28It's not great to get a pro card.
- 33:31Do,
- 33:32and you're coming off of an injury and,
- 33:35and at rogue,
- 33:35you talked about like the lack of
- 33:37confidence you had in that injury until
- 33:39you made it through the weekend.
- 33:42Do you risk damaging it again to go
- 33:45to Copenhagen and,
- 33:46for the outside chance you could get a
- 33:49pro card or do you say hey that
- 33:51isn't worth it anymore and you walk away
- 33:55because i just took home whatever it was
- 33:58two hundred and eighty thousand dollars or
- 34:00two hundred and sixty thousand dollars you
- 34:04know it's gonna be it's gonna be very
- 34:06telling in these in these next six weeks
- 34:09who shows up and who doesn't
- 34:15And I mean,
- 34:16Tia already sat out this year season
- 34:20completely.
- 34:28Mike DeVito,
- 34:28give it another year and I may be
- 34:29eligible to get a pro card and it
- 34:31will be a mediocre fitness project.
- 34:34Well, I don't think,
- 34:35I don't think mediocre.
- 34:37I think what it can be is these
- 34:41semifinal athletes are,
- 34:44who don't have the sponsorships that the
- 34:45big guys do, who would get exposure,
- 34:49who would be helped by this.
- 34:52And they could develop in a competition
- 34:54setting and people could learn their
- 34:56names.
- 34:57So as they advance and as they grow
- 34:59and as they do better in the CrossFit
- 35:01season, we now know who these people are.
- 35:05But they're also that group of people
- 35:06aren't getting invited to Waterpalooza
- 35:08SoCal.
- 35:09They're not getting invited to Rogue.
- 35:11So their season has more openings than the
- 35:14elite athletes do.
- 35:17You know,
- 35:18Jason Hopper has been invited to
- 35:20everything.
- 35:20He won the games.
- 35:22He gets invited to SoCal.
- 35:23He gets invited to Rogue.
- 35:25It gives him no time off.
- 35:29But if you're...
- 35:31a lower tier games athlete or a semifinal
- 35:34athlete,
- 35:34you're not getting those invites and you
- 35:37actually have blocks of time where you can
- 35:39get some rest.
- 35:41This could make sense for them.
- 35:44It doesn't necessarily make sense for the
- 35:46elite of the elite.
- 35:53So anyway, there's that.
- 36:01The last thing that's always bugged me
- 36:03about the WFP is you wanted to be
- 36:05different than the CrossFit Games,
- 36:08yet you started your organization with
- 36:11everybody who worked at the CrossFit
- 36:13Games.
- 36:15Your announcing crew were CrossFit Games
- 36:17people.
- 36:18Your media people were CrossFit Games
- 36:21people.
- 36:22What are you doing different?
- 36:25You advertised, you promised,
- 36:27we're going to be different.
- 36:28We're going to do more exposure.
- 36:30And then you hired the same people who
- 36:32were doing the same job at CrossFit.
- 36:35And you were expecting a different
- 36:36outcome?
- 36:39And the reality was you didn't even get
- 36:40that.
- 36:46Barbell Spin,
- 36:47all you missed is us pointing everybody to
- 36:50your Instagram account and your website
- 36:53for further information while we ranted
- 36:56about everything going on.
- 36:57That's pretty much what you missed.
- 37:03um mike devito fair point like how the
- 37:07major leagues has minor league ball clubs
- 37:09that i could see and it could be
- 37:11great but the wfp will never look at
- 37:13it like that i don't think i yeah
- 37:19i mean will will said in an interview
- 37:23when asked that exact question no but i
- 37:26could see the crossfit games being a minor
- 37:29league system for the wfp
- 37:33That is a little bit of delusion right
- 37:35there.
- 37:46Chattanoofy, a little behind,
- 37:47but if you don't ever say how much
- 37:48you make,
- 37:49it gives the impression that the goalpost
- 37:51could be moved.
- 37:53You'll get however much we think we want
- 37:56to give you.
- 37:59That's the point.
- 38:05If I'm an athlete and I think the
- 38:07goal,
- 38:07they're moving the goalpost on me or I,
- 38:12and what incentive do I have to shoot
- 38:14for the next layer?
- 38:15If you never tell me what the next
- 38:16layer is.
- 38:23When Caleb Williams for the Chicago Bears
- 38:25comes up for a contract renewal,
- 38:27he knows what every other quarterback is
- 38:29making in the league.
- 38:30And he knows where to shoot his shot
- 38:32to ask for a contract because of his
- 38:35ability compared to those quarterbacks.
- 38:39In the WFP,
- 38:40nobody knows anything unless they're
- 38:42telling the athletes behind the scenes.
- 38:46But when it's public,
- 38:49the negotiation becomes way easier.
- 38:57I don't know.
- 39:00The last thing I wanted to leave on
- 39:03for today's show is...
- 39:08uh, service cup is this weekend.
- 39:11Our very own Carolyn Prevo is going to
- 39:13be there with her partner, uh,
- 39:15from the education world.
- 39:17Uh, she won the service cup.
- 39:20She is the number one seed in teachers.
- 39:22She got to pick her partner.
- 39:24She is taking the number two seed from
- 39:26the teachers.
- 39:28Um,
- 39:29and so we're going to be rooting for
- 39:30her this weekend.
- 39:31Savon did a nice interview this morning
- 39:34with, um,
- 39:37Can't remember her name right now.
- 39:39Australian law enforcement officer Megan
- 39:42Apostolaris won the law enforcement.
- 39:45She's a friend of the show.
- 39:47She has been on the show.
- 39:49I've interviewed her at the age group
- 39:51games several times.
- 39:53she is leading the, uh,
- 39:56law enforcement team, uh,
- 39:59with the person that Savan had this
- 40:00morning.
- 40:01They did a great job promoting that.
- 40:03Um,
- 40:03everything that Carolyn has told me is
- 40:05that mayhem has,
- 40:06is treating these athletes like rock stars
- 40:09this weekend.
- 40:10Um,
- 40:11it's a one day competition and then mayhem
- 40:14is going to turn around a highlight reel.
- 40:17Um,
- 40:18of everything that has happened in that
- 40:21mayhem style.
- 40:22I also heard this morning on Savant Savant
- 40:25that Jenny is going to be there with
- 40:27the law enforcement team who are coached
- 40:29by Taylor and Bryson and that Jenny is
- 40:33going to go live from there occasionally.
- 40:36Uh,
- 40:36so we'll get to see some of that
- 40:37hopefully over the weekend.
- 40:41So check out a dense updates,
- 40:43Instagram to see how she's going to do
- 40:45that,
- 40:45whether it's going to be on YouTube or
- 40:47Instagram and, uh, and yeah,
- 40:52so we'll hopefully get some clips,
- 40:54some stuff, uh, to come out.
- 40:57Yeah.
- 40:58If they let me, of course.
- 40:59Yeah, that is true.
- 41:01is true but they're not streaming it so
- 41:03i don't think you'd be taking anything
- 41:05away um but yeah it is mayhem they
- 41:09do have their own media company so who
- 41:11knows what they're gonna let uh joseph
- 41:16ramirez i only need one point nine nine
- 41:19five million uh to buy crossfit if anybody
- 41:22wants to chip in uh and jenny has
- 41:25a dollar ninety nine to add in and
- 41:27getting close getting close
- 41:30I probably have five bucks.
- 41:33Five bucks to throw in there.
- 41:41Scott is jazzed up.
- 41:43I am.
- 41:45I am very jazzed up today.
- 41:47Got a little hot under the collar today.
- 41:49I didn't expect that.
- 41:51Just kind of came to me.
- 41:55So, getting jazzed.
- 42:02uh train olive can give at least twenty
- 42:04bucks man we're really really moving
- 42:07forward uh leader says we we should ask
- 42:10frank if we're asking frank i withdraw my
- 42:12five dollars that's that so there sorry
- 42:20that's a that's a non-negotiable for me so
- 42:26with that guys um
- 42:30Oh, good.
- 42:30Now you got my five dollars back, Joseph.
- 42:33Frank is out.
- 42:34There we go.
- 42:40So, yeah.
- 42:41So I better get back to.
- 42:44To work,
- 42:45I've got to get this document finished.
- 42:50And with that, we'll be back tomorrow,
- 42:54Friday.
- 42:56Last day of the week.
- 42:57Lunch with Clydesdale tomorrow.
- 42:59Don't forget to like and subscribe.
- 43:01We've gotten a couple new members this
- 43:02week, and I haven't even mentioned that.
- 43:05So if you want to be a member
- 43:06and help support the show,
- 43:07you can do it for as cheap as
- 43:08three bucks a month.
- 43:10And it just hits that little join button
- 43:12below.
- 43:13But if you don't want to do that,
- 43:15Like and subscribe helps a lot as well.
- 43:18And any comments you want to give helps
- 43:20the algorithm a ton.
- 43:22So if there's anything you want to say
- 43:24about what I said today,
- 43:26go ahead and shoot that in.
- 43:28Craig Pasley left comments over the
- 43:30weekend that have given me content for the
- 43:32week.
- 43:33So if you want to impact what we
- 43:36talk about, throw some ideas in the chat.
- 43:41It's created content for us and we love
- 43:44that.
- 43:46So with that,
- 43:50just be a freeloader and hit like and
- 43:51subscribe.
- 43:52I'm cool with that.
- 43:53I'm cool with that today.
- 43:55You guys let me rant and it helps
