- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at FindingGodAtWork.org.
- 0:28With this episode, we're kicking off a new
- 0:31series, Take a Stand, Faithful Political Witness at
- 0:36Work.
- 0:37As you may be able to hear, I'm
- 0:39getting over a cold, and as I was
- 0:41praying through this series with great trepidation, I
- 0:44just feel like God has given me the
- 0:46gift of a new depth literally in my
- 0:49voice as we press into talking about controversial
- 0:52issues and politics and having prophetic witness in
- 0:55the workplace and other things.
- 0:57So we're just going to run with that,
- 0:58that this is a blessing, that my voice
- 1:00sounds sonorous and deep as we talk about
- 1:02these serious things.
- 1:04But I do ask for your grace, that
- 1:07you'd pray for me as we enter into
- 1:08this series, even though I recorded it some
- 1:10time ago.
- 1:12I believe God can still use those prayers
- 1:13time-travel-wise to reach back to me
- 1:16in my little recording studio in my home
- 1:18here and help me.
- 1:20I had a lot of hesitation to even
- 1:22do this series.
- 1:24Politics this year in the United States and
- 1:27around the world is just as fraught as
- 1:29ever, and it's very difficult as somebody who
- 1:33teaches the Word of God from the Scriptures
- 1:36to navigate politics faithfully.
- 1:39But just because it's difficult doesn't mean it's
- 1:41impossible, and I feel like God's put this
- 1:43on my heart to speak to all of
- 1:45us who are seeking to live out our
- 1:47faith in the workplace every day.
- 1:49As the political issues of our time do
- 1:51impinge upon our life at work and come
- 1:53up at work, we need to know how
- 1:55to have a faithful Christian response, and so
- 1:56I want to speak to that in this
- 1:57series.
- 1:58So I pray for your grace with any
- 2:00way I may misspeak, and know that I'm
- 2:03seeking to do this from a place of
- 2:04faithfulness and courage, as I will also challenge
- 2:07you to do throughout the series.
- 2:09So with that little caveat, I want to
- 2:11just kind of introduce the series in this
- 2:13episode.
- 2:14So this is more of kind of a
- 2:15lay of the land mapping episode, and then
- 2:17we'll start digging into stuff a little bit
- 2:19more in the coming episodes.
- 2:21But the series title is Take a Stand,
- 2:24Faithful Political Witness at Work.
- 2:28And the structure of the series is also
- 2:30there in that title.
- 2:31So in the phrase, faithful political witness, that
- 2:34gives you the three parts of the series.
- 2:37So part one, faithful.
- 2:40What does it mean to be faithful in
- 2:42our political conversations and political actions in the
- 2:46workplace?
- 2:48And so that first starting place is really
- 2:51an answer to a question or a couple
- 2:53questions.
- 2:54The first question is a relatively easy question,
- 2:56and then there's a harder question.
- 2:58So the first, easier question, which is still
- 3:00kind of fraught, is what can you do
- 3:03as a Christian when politics comes up in
- 3:07conversation at the workplace?
- 3:10So just how do you navigate that particular
- 3:11social moment?
- 3:12Suddenly you're at the lunch table, or maybe
- 3:14even somewhere else, like in a meeting, and
- 3:16a political issue is suddenly being talked about
- 3:19in your workplace.
- 3:20What is a faithful Christian response in that
- 3:23moment?
- 3:24And maybe, should you ever be the one
- 3:26to initiate that moment?
- 3:27Is there opportunity sometimes to be the one
- 3:30who brings up politics, whether it's in an
- 3:32informal context like the lunch table or in
- 3:34a more formal context that may relate to
- 3:36work decisions?
- 3:38So that's kind of our first question is
- 3:39like, okay, how do we navigate that sometimes
- 3:43awkward, weighted, fraught social moment of suddenly we're
- 3:47talking about politics at work.
- 3:50Then the harder question that we're going to
- 3:51kind of use the first question to launch
- 3:53into is, what is faithful political action in
- 3:58the workplace?
- 3:59Now that can feel a little bit more
- 4:01abstract.
- 4:01Often, depending on what our work is, we
- 4:04might think of politics in kind of one
- 4:05realm of our life, like the way we
- 4:07vote, maybe the way we do some stuff
- 4:09in our community.
- 4:10And then our job is kind of a
- 4:11different thing in our life where we're just
- 4:12like doing our job at our job and
- 4:14it never the twain shall meet.
- 4:15They don't feel super connected.
- 4:17But the reality is all of our work,
- 4:19whatever it is, has political dynamics to it.
- 4:23There are political issues that affect our work
- 4:25and there's a way in which our work
- 4:27also affects our political life in your community
- 4:30and in your nation and beyond.
- 4:33And so it may feel a little bit
- 4:34abstract, but we do want to ask the
- 4:36question, wow, in as much as my work
- 4:39connects to political issues of our time, what
- 4:43is a faithful Christian way to think, speak,
- 4:48and act about those political issues?
- 4:52So that's the word faithful.
- 4:55How can we be faithful in those conversations?
- 4:58And we're breaking it down into four parts.
- 5:00So how can we be prayerful?
- 5:02How can we be thoughtful?
- 5:04How can we be gentle?
- 5:07And how can we be courageous?
- 5:09Now there's lots of other aspects of faithfulness
- 5:12besides those four, but as I was praying
- 5:14and prepping, I felt like those four are
- 5:17really important for our political conversations at work.
- 5:20What does it mean for us as Christians,
- 5:22as disciples of Jesus, to have prayerful, thoughtful,
- 5:26gentle, and courageous political conversations with other people?
- 5:31Okay, so that's the first part, faithful.
- 5:34Then we'll move into political.
- 5:36So faithful political witness, part two, political.
- 5:39What is politics?
- 5:41How do we understand politics writ large in
- 5:44relation to the kingdom of God as disciples
- 5:45of Jesus?
- 5:47And in this section, we're going to use
- 5:49the three key virtues that St. Paul mentions
- 5:52in 1 Corinthians of faith, hope, and love.
- 5:56These three remain faith, hope, and love, and
- 5:59the greatest of these is love.
- 6:01So we're going to look at faith and
- 6:03the idea of who or what are we
- 6:05putting our faith in?
- 6:06Where is our allegiance?
- 6:08And how does that affect the way we
- 6:10think about politics as Christians?
- 6:13Then we're going to move into hope.
- 6:15How does our vision of the future, the
- 6:17future of the world, the future of justice,
- 6:19the future of human society, how does that
- 6:21affect the way we think about politics as
- 6:23Christians?
- 6:24And then love.
- 6:26How does God's love for us, God's love
- 6:28for the world, our love for God in
- 6:31response and our love for our neighbors as
- 6:34an expression of that love for God, how
- 6:36does all of that affect the way we
- 6:38think about exercising political power?
- 6:40What does it mean to have a politics
- 6:41of love?
- 6:42Is that even possible?
- 6:43And we'll look at a few different thinkers
- 6:45who can help us along those lines.
- 6:48So that's part two, political.
- 6:50We'll look at faith, hope, and love for
- 6:52how we think about politics in the kingdom
- 6:54of God as followers of Jesus.
- 6:57And then part three, witness.
- 7:01Faithful political witness.
- 7:03Now witness is a New Testament word primarily
- 7:06used to describe witness to the resurrection of
- 7:08Jesus.
- 7:09So there were witnesses, right?
- 7:10When Paul's summarizing the gospel, he says, you
- 7:14know, what was of first importance.
- 7:16I proclaim to you that Christ died for
- 7:18our sins according to the scriptures, that he
- 7:20rose from the dead on the third day,
- 7:22according to the scriptures, and that he appeared
- 7:24to Simon and to others.
- 7:26And it goes on and discusses some of
- 7:27those appearances, like right there, the fact that
- 7:30Jesus rose from the dead and that he
- 7:32appeared to witnesses like Simon, like John, like
- 7:35James, like others, is part of the good
- 7:37news itself.
- 7:38That this really happened, that people saw it
- 7:40happen, and that affects everything.
- 7:44So witness is this idea of how do
- 7:47we look at all of reality in relation
- 7:50to the resurrection of Jesus?
- 7:52And so within the context of faithful political
- 7:54witness, we're going to be looking at particular
- 7:57political issues.
- 7:58And how do we look at these particular
- 8:00political issues in the light of the resurrection
- 8:03of Jesus?
- 8:05And so just to have a few concrete
- 8:07issues to look at, we'll be looking at
- 8:09three.
- 8:10There's obviously hundreds of political issues, but hopefully
- 8:13the way that we navigate and process these
- 8:16questions around these three issues can kind of
- 8:18help lay a template where you could then
- 8:20look at other issues as well, whatever they
- 8:23may be and think through, okay, how does
- 8:25the light of the resurrection of Jesus shine
- 8:27on this political issue?
- 8:30So there's three that we'll look at are
- 8:32immigration, abortion, and food insecurity.
- 8:38And I'm including food insecurity because in my
- 8:40other work life, I'm a food banker, and
- 8:41so I want to draw on some of
- 8:42my experiences there.
- 8:45Again, could have chosen other issues.
- 8:47These are ones that I felt like in
- 8:48my own reading and study and friends who
- 8:51I have access to, I could speak to
- 8:52in a little bit more of an informed
- 8:54way.
- 8:57So again, I ask for your prayer.
- 8:59There's no way to do a series about
- 9:01politics like this that doesn't step on somebody's
- 9:04toes or bother somebody or go against somebody's
- 9:07particular political convictions.
- 9:10But I really believe that in this fraught
- 9:13moment in our nation and in our world,
- 9:16that God has something for us to learn.
- 9:20And so I do want to speak very
- 9:22briefly about what's going on in the bigger
- 9:24political context here.
- 9:27As I've prayed about what Mission Central is
- 9:30for and what this podcast Finding God at
- 9:33Work is for, I really feel that this
- 9:36is not a current events podcast.
- 9:38I hope that I will speak clearly to
- 9:41the teaching of Scripture and to particular political
- 9:44issues in a way that helps make connections
- 9:47with current events, but I'm going to let
- 9:50you, the listener, make those connections.
- 9:53Part of that is I feel that this
- 9:54is in terms of what God has asked
- 9:56me to do as I understand it, as
- 9:58imperfectly as that must be.
- 10:00This is a teaching ministry more than a
- 10:02prophetic ministry.
- 10:04So my goal here is to shepherd Christians
- 10:07more than it is to speak truth to
- 10:08power in this particular podcast.
- 10:11I'm trying to help you figure out, okay,
- 10:13how do I navigate the warp and woof
- 10:15of my particular workplace environment whenever politics becomes
- 10:19part of that environment, right?
- 10:21This is a teaching podcast.
- 10:23It's not primarily to go confront the civic
- 10:25powers with the testimony of Jesus, which is
- 10:28extremely important ministry that I believe that local
- 10:31pastors are called to do and other teachers
- 10:33of the Scripture are called to do and
- 10:34certain people with a particular kind of civic
- 10:36oriented vocation are called to do.
- 10:39So I deeply care about everything that's unfolding
- 10:41right now.
- 10:42I just won't be making reference to too
- 10:44many current news articles as time goes on
- 10:48for that reason.
- 10:50But if any questions that come up make
- 10:52you think like, wow, how does this idea
- 10:55that Chris is talking about on the podcast
- 10:56relate to this news story this week?
- 10:58And you want to have that conversation, get
- 11:00ahold of me.
- 11:01Many of you already have my cell phone
- 11:02number.
- 11:03You can find my email on the Mission
- 11:04Central website.
- 11:05If not, I would love to grab coffee
- 11:07with you and talk through how do we
- 11:08faithfully respond to this little particular moment in
- 11:12our history as Christians.
- 11:15But I won't be trying to break that
- 11:16down in the podcast series itself.
- 11:20Okay, so just to wrap up today, because
- 11:22we don't have time to get into a
- 11:23thorough teaching, having done all of this groundwork
- 11:26to lay out the series, I just want
- 11:27to read a couple of verses from Proverbs.
- 11:30And then we'll dig more into this idea
- 11:32starting with our next episode.
- 11:33So this is Proverbs 3, 33 through 34.
- 11:38The Lord's curse is on the house of
- 11:41the wicked, but he blesses the dwelling of
- 11:43the righteous.
- 11:45Toward the scorners, he is scornful.
- 11:48But to the humble, he gives favor.
- 11:53Lord Jesus, thank you that you give favor
- 11:55to the humble.
- 11:56We ask for humility for ourselves as we
- 11:59step into all of these questions in the
- 12:01series.
- 12:03Show us how to be open to you
- 12:05and to your blessing.
- 12:07That your blessing would be on our dwelling.
- 12:11That we would be humble to receive it.
- 12:14And that you would show us how to
- 12:15bless the people around us in a midst
- 12:17of great political turmoil.
- 12:20That we would trust that your kingdom is
- 12:22coming and your will is being done on
- 12:25earth as it is in heaven.
- 12:28Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 12:30do our work with you.
- 12:37Thanks for listening.
