But today, I want to focus on something much warmer. Luna: Oh, I like the sound of that. What is it? Lucas: Coffee. Ethiopian coffee. We're going to learn how to order coffee in Amharic. Luna: Yes! I've heard Ethiopian coffee is incredible. So, how do I say 'I want coffee'? Lucas: Great question. Let's start with the word for coffee: ቡና. Luna: ቡና. Lucas: Good. Now, 'I want coffee' is ቡና እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ቡና እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Perfect. The verb እፈልጋለሁ means 'I want'. So ቡና እፈልጋለሁ is 'I want coffee'. Luna: Okay, I think I can remember that. ቡና እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Now, what if you want it with sugar? Sugar is ስኳር. 'With sugar' is ከስኳር ጋር. Luna: ከስኳር ጋር. Lucas: Right. So 'I want coffee with sugar' is ቡና ከስኳር ጋር እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: That's a mouthful. ቡና ከስኳር ጋር እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: You'll get it with practice. And if you want hot coffee, you say ትኩስ ቡና. ትኩስ means 'hot'. Luna: ትኩስ ቡና. Hot coffee. That sounds good. Lucas: It does. Now, a simple way to order is to say አንድ ቡና እባክህ, which means 'One coffee, please'. Luna: አንድ ቡና እባክህ. Lucas: Exactly. አንድ is 'one', እባክህ is 'please'. Luna: So I could go to a coffee shop and just say አንድ ቡና እባክህ, and they'd bring me a coffee? Lucas: Yes, they would. And if you want it with sugar, add ከስኳር ጋር. አንድ ቡና ከስኳር ጋር እባክህ. Lucas: Then I ask ከስኳር ጋር? You say አዎ, ከስኳር ጋር. Luna: አዎ, ከስኳር ጋር. Lucas: Then I say እነሆ — 'here you go.' And you say አመሰግናለሁ — 'thank you.' Luna: አመሰግናለሁ. Lucas: Great job!
