- 0:00Chapter 5 from the book of Esther.
- 0:03Dear Lord, please be with us as we read through this.
- 0:06Give us insight and wisdom through the Holy Spirit.
- 0:09We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. Esther's request to the King On
- 0:16the third day, Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the
- 0:20inner court of the palace in front of the King's hall.
- 0:24The king was sitting on his royal throne in the hall facing
- 0:27the entrance. When he saw Queen Esther
- 0:30standing in the court, he was pleased with her and held out to
- 0:34her the gold scepter that was in his hand.
- 0:37So Esther approached and touched the tip of the scepter.
- 0:41Now there's a lot of things already in this first few
- 0:43sentences and things that stood out to me.
- 0:48One of the things that's a little bit unusual that stood
- 0:51up, not unusual, but something that caught my eye was the third
- 0:55day. And when you look up the third
- 0:59day, there's so many references in Scripture.
- 1:02It's very interesting. It in the NIV version, it occurs
- 1:05106 times in 47 versions. And I, you know, the way God's
- 1:11word is, is this a coincidence or is it God's provision, like
- 1:18his sovereignty over overall, that even though it seems like
- 1:25it might be a coincidence, maybe there's more to it than that.
- 1:28And if you want to just get a digital Bible and search third
- 1:32day, you can see what I'm talking about with 106 verses.
- 1:35I won't read all of those because they don't all relate,
- 1:39but the significance of the third day in the Bible typically
- 1:43signifies A crucial turning point, divine intervention or
- 1:49resurrection, marking the moment God brings forth new life,
- 1:54restoration, or fulfillment of promises after a period of
- 2:00waiting or testing. It is most prominently the day
- 2:05Jesus rose from the dead, fulfilling prophecy.
- 2:08So there's some examples of the third day which I will give that
- 2:14are scripturally related. So resurrection and victory.
- 2:17The primary meaning is the resurrection of Jesus Christ on
- 2:21the first Easter Sunday, making victory over sin and death,
- 2:27divine intervention and restoration.
- 2:30God frequently acts on the third day to save or restore.
- 2:36Now think about this in Esther's story, she's going to first of
- 2:41all, they she asked Mordecai and all the Jews to fast for three
- 2:45days. So she waited until pray and
- 2:48fast. And this is also something that
- 2:52just came to mind as I was reading this because so I'm
- 2:56going to jump on the thought that came to my mind was Jesus
- 3:02told his well, he sent out his disciples and they were doing
- 3:06these miracles and they were actually casting out demons.
- 3:13And one time they had, they had tried to, I think this might
- 3:19have been in the book of Acts, not with Jesus, but one time the
- 3:23disciples went out and they were casting out demons and they
- 3:26could not. Well, I think it was Jesus that
- 3:29said it. I have to find the verse that
- 3:31just came to mind. So sorry about this, but it is
- 3:33in the Bible. You'll be able to find it.
- 3:35But some versions don't add the fasting, which is really
- 3:39interesting in the NIV that doesn't say the prayer and
- 3:42fasting, but in other versions of the Bible it does.
- 3:45So the story is that the his followers went out and they were
- 3:50having success in casting out demons, but this one time they
- 3:54were unable to. And I believe they asked the
- 3:57Lord why were we not able to do this?
- 4:02And he said to them, these kind only come out through prayer and
- 4:07fasting. So there is something like very
- 4:10spiritual about prayer and fasting.
- 4:14And we look at the story of Esther and she asked Mordecai to
- 4:19pray and fast for three days and she would do the same.
- 4:25So she waited, she prayed and she fasted.
- 4:28So there's something spiritual about praying and fasting and
- 4:32connecting with God during that time.
- 4:35And so it's it's interesting that after she did this is when
- 4:39she approached the the king. And there's a lot that I have to
- 4:45say about that as well. But this is this is, you know,
- 4:51when I said God frequently acts on the third day to save or
- 4:56restore. Now we haven't gotten to the
- 4:59that part of it yet, but that's really what's going to happen.
- 5:01And as this account unfolds, but such as providing a substitute
- 5:07for Isaac. So when Abraham was going to
- 5:12sacrifice Isaac in accordance with what he had heard from God,
- 5:17God provided a ram that was caught in the bushes to
- 5:22substitute for Isaac. Then there was the restoration
- 5:26of Joseph's cupbearer from Genesis chapter 40 where the
- 5:31cupbearer was imprisoned, but Joseph had a dream and told the
- 5:37cupbearer he would be restored to his position.
- 5:41Creation and new life. On the third day of creation,
- 5:45God brought forth vegetation and dry land, symbolizing the start
- 5:49of life and order. Genesis 1 verses 9 through 13.
- 5:55So that's also how from the beginning to the very end, it
- 6:00points to Jesus. So when we have a new life in
- 6:04Christ, it's a, you know, it's another symbolic way on the
- 6:08third day of creation, God brought forth vegetation of dry
- 6:12land, symbolizing the start of life and order.
- 6:16The start of life and order is through Jesus ultimately OK,
- 6:21prophetic fulfillment. It is the timeline for God's
- 6:24redemptive work often tied to Hosea.
- 6:28Hosea 6 chapter 6, verse 2. After two days, he will revive
- 6:34us. On the third day He will raise
- 6:36us up. So a lot of people recently have
- 6:42been quoting that verse. There's a video that you can
- 6:46find on YouTube that's called, I think it's Messiah 2030.
- 6:50And they have tied together pieces of scripture that
- 6:56they're, you know, it's a theory, it's not proven, it's
- 7:00not a fact, but it's a theory that Christ will return in
- 7:0520-30, which is not too very far from here from today.
- 7:10And the, the reason or how they came to that conclusion was that
- 7:14a day is like 1000 years and 1000 years is like a day.
- 7:18So what they did is they looked at this verse with many others.
- 7:22So it's not just one verse that they're using, but there are a
- 7:24lot. If you want to see it, there's
- 7:26hours of videos about this. If you're doubting what they're
- 7:29saying. They do have scriptural backup
- 7:32for their theory. But again, you know, that's to
- 7:35the best of their understanding. And there could be things that
- 7:38were missed during that. But after two days, he will
- 7:42revive us. On the third day he will raise
- 7:44us up. So their theory is a day is like
- 7:471000 years. So that's 2000 years.
- 7:49After 2000 years he will revive us on the third day.
- 7:53That's the next 1000 years. He will raise us up.
- 7:57So the theory is that we are in that third day period right now.
- 8:03This year is 2026. So after we got to the year 2000
- 8:10that 2001 we are we are in that third day that next 1000 years
- 8:14up to 3000 and you know from the time of well around
- 8:22approximately around the time of Jesus S death.
- 8:26So what is that timeline? You know, that's what they were
- 8:31in their theory was they were theorizing that this two day
- 8:36count, the 2000 year count started when Jesus died on the
- 8:41cross. And so they're estimating when
- 8:43that is because I think there's some like anywhere from 30 to 33
- 8:48or maybe even 27 to 33 because the calendars got messed up.
- 8:52So we I think it's actually from 2027 to 2033 that are that could
- 9:01fit into that theory of the two or three days sometime after.
- 9:07And again, it's not saying there's a certain date, but it's
- 9:10just saying there's going to be about 2000 years.
- 9:13And then sometime in that next 1000 years, Jesus will return.
- 9:19And so that's that's again, a theory preparation for
- 9:24encounter. It is a time of for consecration
- 9:29before meeting God as seen with the Israelites at Mount Sinai in
- 9:35Exodus 19 verses 10 through 11. So they took three days to
- 9:41prepare and God, this is when God gave them the 10
- 9:45commandments. So the significant, you know,
- 9:49God descended on Mount Sinai in Exodus 19 on that third day.
- 9:55And Jonah was another one where it was, he was in the fish's
- 9:59belly or the whale's belly for three days.
- 10:01And that was very symbolic of Jesus's being resurrected on the
- 10:06third day after he was in the tomb, you know, he died and then
- 10:10it was three days later that he resurrected.
- 10:13And that's the cornerstone of Christian faith.
- 10:16And you can see that in Matthew 16 verse 21 and Luke 24 verse
- 10:2146. So a lot of third day Again,
- 10:25that could just be a coincidence, but it's something
- 10:26that just popped up to me as I was reading this and knowing
- 10:31that there is significance elsewhere in the Bible that
- 10:33talks about third day and everything points to Jesus.
- 10:36So, you know, maybe it's a coincidence or maybe it's not.
- 10:42But the third day, you know, she went through the process of
- 10:46preparation and was consulting God.
- 10:49So God is with her. If they're praying and fasting
- 10:55the and so the king receives her like she she also.
- 10:59This is another thing that I thought about was for Esther.
- 11:05She knew that the king hadn't called for her in the last 30
- 11:09days. So she knew the risk.
- 11:11If she goes to approach the king and ask him for anything and
- 11:15he's not happy with her, that means death to her.
- 11:18That's how severe their laws were.
- 11:21And so she was risking her life by going in front of the king.
- 11:28But her cousin Mordecai told her, hey, if you don't do this,
- 11:34your, you and your family are going to die too.
- 11:37So and if you don't do it, somebody else will.
- 11:40Like, I believe that was Mordecai's faith and trust in
- 11:44God for provision. But Queen Esther, I see that she
- 11:53actually seems to have the fruit of the Spirit.
- 11:57So Lovejoy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness,
- 12:02faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, those are the
- 12:05fruits of the Spirit. Well, she's certainly operating
- 12:08in love. It's like self, self sacrificial
- 12:11love or servitude for others for their good.
- 12:15So she's acting in that way. I wouldn't say there's joy in it
- 12:20or but perhaps she has peace. She doesn't come into his
- 12:26presence like ranting or weeping or mourning or doing any of
- 12:32these things. It seems like she comes in with
- 12:34a very level head when she approaches the king.
- 12:38Forbearance is like a perseverance.
- 12:40So she didn't rush in to talk to the king, but she fasted for
- 12:45three days. So she took spiritual
- 12:50preparation before she went to the king.
- 12:54And she's doing this out of kindness, out of goodness,
- 12:58kindness for the Jewish people, goodness for, you know, this
- 13:02will be good if he receives her well and faithfulness, like
- 13:07she's trusting in what her cousin Mordecai said, that, you
- 13:11know, if you don't do this, somebody else will.
- 13:14You know, maybe she's putting her faith in God and letting him
- 13:18guide her. And she's approaching this in a
- 13:20very gentle way and with self-control.
- 13:23And you'll see that next because she doesn't rush into telling
- 13:27the king, even though he encourages her to.
- 13:30He says, you know, tell me what you want and we'll read that in
- 13:32a moment. But she has self restraint and
- 13:36those are all fruits of the spirit.
- 13:38And so I think that is another thing about the the Spirit of
- 13:44God in second Timothy one verse 7, it says for the Spirit God
- 13:48gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and
- 13:55self-discipline. So think about this.
- 14:00I mean, she's not timid. It takes a lot of courage to do
- 14:02what she's doing. She's obviously operating in the
- 14:05power of God and out of love for her people and self-discipline
- 14:12where she is has self restraint. She's like I said, she's not
- 14:16coming in here weeping or frantic or emotional or
- 14:20anything. She's very put together when she
- 14:23asked the king for this request that she's about to make.
- 14:28So and the other thing is about about love and about you know,
- 14:33your get having our priorities right In John chapter 12 verse
- 14:3725, it says anyone who loves their life will lose it, while
- 14:43anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for
- 14:47eternal life. Another way of saying this that
- 14:51if you are really worldly and focused on the world's value
- 14:55system and you try to preserve your life like you don't want to
- 15:02shake anything up in this world. What the Bible says is, you
- 15:06know, you will lose it if you're if you're in alliance with the
- 15:09world, you're going to lose. And I think it's more or less
- 15:12talking about your eternal life. And but you know, anyone who
- 15:18hates their life in this world, like you're rejecting the Satan
- 15:22is the ruler of the air. I mean, he has some sort of
- 15:25power over the earth right now and it's apparently ruled by him
- 15:31in many ways. So if you don't like that, if
- 15:37anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for
- 15:40eternal life, it's like, who are you going to support the ruler
- 15:45of the air right now over the world?
- 15:48Or are you going to rely on God? And it may cause us to need or
- 15:57cause us to be faced with the decision that is going to be
- 16:02challenging for us in the future.
- 16:04But our alliance has to be very clear when we go through that,
- 16:09when or if we go through that testing.
- 16:12And some may go through it and some may not go through it, but
- 16:16that's where our faith needs to be so strong that we are willing
- 16:20to go through it. Just like Esther was to go in
- 16:22front of that king for the good of the people, the good of the
- 16:25Jews, her her nation, to preserve their life.
- 16:33She had to take a risk like she did.
- 16:37So OK, verse 3 then the king asked, What is it Queen Esther,
- 16:43what is your request? Even up to half the Kingdom, it
- 16:46will be given to you. Like look at this favor that
- 16:49he's giving her if it pleases, the king replied.
- 16:53Esther, let the king together with Haman, come today to a
- 16:57banquet I have prepared for him. Bring Haman at once, the king
- 17:03said, so that we may do what Esther asks.
- 17:07So the king and Haman went to the banquet Esther had prepared.
- 17:11As they were drinking wine, the king again asked Esther, Now
- 17:17what is your petition? It will be given to you.
- 17:20And what is your request? Even up to half the Kingdom, it
- 17:24will be granted, Esther replied. My petition and my request is
- 17:29this. If the king regards me with
- 17:31favor, and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and
- 17:36fulfill my request, let the king and Haman come tomorrow to the
- 17:42banquet. I will prepare for them.
- 17:45Then I will answer the King's question.
- 17:48Now, I don't know what this delay is, why she didn't ask for
- 17:54it right then and there, but for some reason she delayed in doing
- 17:59this. We'll continue to read.
- 18:01Haman went out that day happy and in high spirits.
- 18:05But when he saw Mordecai, that's Esther's cousin, at the King's
- 18:10gate, and observed that he neither rose nor showed fear in
- 18:15his presence, he was filled with Rage Against Mordecai.
- 18:20Nevertheless, Haman restrained himself and went home.
- 18:24But think about this. It says in Ephesians chapter 4
- 18:31verse 26 and 27, it says in your anger do not sin, do not let the
- 18:37sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil
- 18:43a foothold. So something about anger gives
- 18:49the devil a foothold. And you can see that Haman is
- 18:55filled with rage. So this is building up inside of
- 18:58him. And he went home.
- 19:00He didn't do anything at that moment.
- 19:02But boy, when he saw Mordecai at that gate, and Mordecai was not,
- 19:07you know, honoring him and bowing down to him, it just
- 19:10filled him with rage. And then he goes home.
- 19:13And then we'll see what happens next, too.
- 19:16So calling together his friends and Zoresh his wife, Haman
- 19:21boasted to them about his vast wealth, his many sons, and all
- 19:28the ways the king had honored him and how he had elevated him
- 19:32above all the other nobles and officials.
- 19:35And that's not all, Haman added. I'm the only person Queen Esther
- 19:40invited to accompany the king to the banquet she gave, and she
- 19:45has invited me along with the king tomorrow.
- 19:49But all of this gives me no satisfaction as long as I see
- 19:53that Jew, Mordecai sitting at the King's gate.
- 19:56So he's boasting. He's very prideful about
- 20:00everything that he has, and yet he still has this root of
- 20:06bitterness, of anger building up inside of him against Mordecai
- 20:10the Jew. It doesn't matter that he has
- 20:13all these things that he is claiming are so wonderful in his
- 20:16life. He still has that root of
- 20:18bitterness, that foothold of the devil inside of him that's
- 20:23inspiring him to do something with it.
- 20:26Proverbs 16 verse 18 says pride goes before destruction, a
- 20:33haughty spirit before a fall. We're going to see this play
- 20:37out. He's very prideful, he's got
- 20:41this proud spirit and it says that happens right before
- 20:44destruction, so watch what happens.
- 20:47His wife and all his friends said to him Have a pole set up
- 20:52reaching to a height of 50 cubits and asked the king in the
- 20:57morning to have Mordecai impaled on it.
- 21:01Then go with the king to the banquet and enjoy yourself.
- 21:06The suggestion delighted Haman. And he had the pole set up.
- 21:11So look at this. I mean, like that creates a
- 21:13little bit of fear or anxiety. Like Esther's going to have this
- 21:17banquet where she tells the king what she wants, but Mordecai is
- 21:21going to get this this thing done before the banquet occurs.
- 21:28Like he's going to have Mordecai taken care of, taken out before
- 21:31Esther even gets to say anything.
- 21:34But we'll again, see God's Providence coming out.
- 21:37I'm going to continue in chapter 6.
- 21:41Listen to this. That night the king could not
- 21:45sleep, so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of
- 21:50his reign, to be brought in and read to him.
- 21:54It was found recorded there that Mordecai had posed Biktana and
- 21:59Teresh, 2 of the King's officers who guarded the doorway, who had
- 22:04conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.
- 22:09Now, I think that night he could not sleep.
- 22:13I kind of think that might have been something that was
- 22:15spiritual with him because God can speak even to he.
- 22:23He speaks to people. And I think that sometimes when
- 22:28we awaken in the night and there's something that's
- 22:30disturbing us, it could be something that we need to pray
- 22:33about to God to turn it over. It could be the enemy coming to
- 22:40us with something. But God tends to reveal things.
- 22:45Now, it does not say he had a dream or anything.
- 22:48He was just restless, like something was troubling him.
- 22:51It could have been the Holy Spirit troubling him.
- 22:55But God, you know, sometimes these things happen at night and
- 22:59they could be from God or they could be from the enemy, but
- 23:04these things do happen to people in the night.
- 23:06And I want to read some examples of that.
- 23:10So the Bible states in in Job 33, verses 14 through 18 that
- 23:14God speaks through dreams and visions of the night to warn,
- 23:19direct or reveal truths. This form of divine
- 23:23communication is depicted throughout Scripture, including
- 23:26Joseph's dreams found in Genesis chapter 37, Pharaoh's dreams in
- 23:30Genesis chapter 41, and warnings to Joseph, Jesus's earthly
- 23:35father found in Matthew chapter 2 verse 13.
- 23:40The key Scriptures are in Numbers 12, verse 6.
- 23:45When there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, reveal myself
- 23:50to them in visions. I speak to them in dreams.
- 23:55In Job 33, verses 15 through 16, he speaks in dreams in visions
- 24:02of the night when the deep sleep falls on people as they lie in
- 24:07their beds. In Genesis 37, verses 5 through
- 24:1210, Joseph receives receives dreams regarding his future.
- 24:17In Genesis 41, God uses Joseph to interpret Pharaoh's dreams to
- 24:23warn of famine. First Kings chapter 3 verse 5
- 24:29God appears to Solomon in a dream to offer him wisdom.
- 24:35Daniel chapter 2 and seven, God reveals future kingdoms to
- 24:40Daniel through dreams in Matthew one verse 20 and chapter 2 verse
- 24:4613, an Angel appears to Joseph, the husband of Mary in dreams to
- 24:52give instructions so that they can avoid, you know, Jesus being
- 24:56killed because of his age. So these these scriptures
- 25:01indicate that God uses dreams as one of the many ways to
- 25:04communicate guidance, warnings or reveal hidden truths.
- 25:09Now, King Xerxes did not have a dream, but there was some reason
- 25:14he couldn't. He couldn't go to sleep.
- 25:16In fact, I also think about the time when Moses had no, not
- 25:22Moses when Abraham had told the the Pharaoh or the king that
- 25:32Sarah was his sister and the king took her and was going to
- 25:39sleep with her. But then God came to him in a
- 25:42dream and warned him also and told him like all the
- 25:45consequences if he moved forward with this.
- 25:48So there, I mean, some of these examples were only just a few,
- 25:51but there were there are many times where God will shake
- 25:55somebody up. You know, Nebuchadnezzar was
- 25:59warned and told what his future would be through Daniel.
- 26:05So there's there's a lot of times where sleep disturbances
- 26:09can be warnings can cause unrest.
- 26:15There's sometimes a purpose in it.
- 26:18And I think the most appropriate thing to do it with sleep
- 26:21disturbances is to pray when that happens because God may be
- 26:25wanting to speak at that moment. So that night the king couldn't
- 26:30sleep. I do think that's divine
- 26:32intervention and how God is, is Provident.
- 26:35Where now he says, OK, we'll bring in the story of my reign
- 26:39and just read it to me so I can fall back asleep.
- 26:42And so as he's doing it, he hears about Mordecai.
- 26:45And then he says in verse 3, what honor and recognition has
- 26:49Mordecai received for this? The king asked.
- 26:52Nothing has been done for him. His attendance answered.
- 26:55The king said, Who is in the court now?
- 26:58Haman, look at that. Just another weird coincidence,
- 27:01right? But I don't think so.
- 27:03It's probably Providence from God he's making all this happen,
- 27:07the king said. Who is in the court now?
- 27:09Haman had just entered the court of the palace to speak to the
- 27:13king about impaling Mordecai on the pole he had set up for him.
- 27:19Isn't that, you know, a turn of events?
- 27:21Like Haman's there to make the opposite request of Esther, and
- 27:25he arrived there early. Do you think maybe the enemy
- 27:29knew what Esther was going to do?
- 27:30And maybe the enemy was inspiring these other people who
- 27:33are not godly focused to encourage Haman to do this in
- 27:39the morning, hurry up, do this in the morning, get this done,
- 27:42and then enjoy the banquet. I mean, that's just how you
- 27:45know, there there are spiritual observation of people and
- 27:51there's an enemy that's, you know, working towards these
- 27:54things. But we can see right here how
- 27:57God is Provident over all of them.
- 27:59So the enemy is seeking to destroy, but that's not God's
- 28:04will and so he's going to make something else happen.
- 28:08Verse 5, his attendants answered, Haman is standing in
- 28:11the court, bring him in, the king ordered.
- 28:14When Haman entered, the king asked him what should be done
- 28:18for the man the king delights to honor.
- 28:21Now Haman thought to himself, who is there that the king would
- 28:25rather honor than me? I mean, remember, he was so
- 28:28prideful. He was boasting to his family
- 28:30and his friends, saying about how much he's been given.
- 28:32And he's, you know, he's so important because he's the only
- 28:36one that Queen Esther invited with the king.
- 28:39And so his head is full of all of this pride.
- 28:42And just like Scripture says, pride comes before destruction,
- 28:45or pride comes before the fall. So he answered the king for so
- 28:50he's thinking about himself. He's thinking, oh, the king
- 28:52wants to honor me because I'm the greatest.
- 28:55So he answered the king for the man the king delights to honor.
- 29:01Have them bring a royal robe the king has worn and a horse for
- 29:07the the king has ridden, one with a royal Crest placed on its
- 29:12head. Then let the robe and the horse
- 29:15be entrusted to one of the King's most noble Princess.
- 29:20Let them robe the man the king delights to honor, and lead him
- 29:26on the horse throughout the city streets, proclaiming before him
- 29:32This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor.
- 29:39Go at once, the king commanded Haman.
- 29:42Get the robe and the horse, and do just as you have suggested
- 29:46for Mordecai the Jew who sits at the King's gate.
- 29:50Do not neglect anything you have recommended.
- 29:55So think about that. Like Heyman's in there thinking
- 29:57this is all going to be about me.
- 29:59He's going to put me up on a horse and I'm going to ride
- 30:02around the city and everybody's going to look at me like I'm so
- 30:04great. And then the king, you know,
- 30:07quickly shuts. I mean, he doesn't even know
- 30:09what Heyman's going to say. But before Heyman can say
- 30:12anything, he's like, go do this for Mordecai the Jew.
- 30:16Can you imagine what is like just burning up inside of Heyman
- 30:20right now? So verse 11.
- 30:23So Haman got the robe and the horse.
- 30:26He robed Mordecai and led him on horseback throughout the city
- 30:31streets, proclaiming before him, This is what is done for the man
- 30:35the king delights to honor. Afterward, Mordecai returned to
- 30:40the King's gate, but Haman rushed home with his head
- 30:45covered in grief and told Suresh, his wife, and all his
- 30:49friends. Everything that happened to him.
- 30:52His advisers and his wife said to him, Since Mordecai, before
- 30:58whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot
- 31:04stand against him. You will surely come to ruin.
- 31:08While they were still talking with him, the King's eunuchs
- 31:11arrived and hurried Haman away to the banquet Esther had
- 31:15prepared. And that's how Chapter 6 ends.
- 31:19So it sounds like his advisors and his wife, they knew the
- 31:25reputation of the Jews and they knew that God was with them.
- 31:29So it seems like they had an awareness of God.
- 31:31And they're like, hey, you know, all of your downfalls started
- 31:35with this Jewish guy, Mordecai. And if you go against him,
- 31:40you're going to surely come to ruin.
- 31:42So there's some sort of an awareness of of some
- 31:46providential being. They may not know God, but they
- 31:49know that something is causing this to happen because it was
- 31:52complete reversal of what was planned.
- 31:56And that's what God can take what the enemy plans and turn it
- 32:00to good. That's what he did with Joseph.
- 32:03We talked about that probably in the last chapter.
- 32:05So I will read the questions and answers from the study guide on
- 32:10chapter 5 and 6 since we covered both of those, and then wrap
- 32:13this up. So was the king literally
- 32:19promising half his Kingdom to Esther?
- 32:21Probably not. Xerxes oath to Esther appears to
- 32:25have been a stock phrase intended by or used by ancient
- 32:30monarchs to express favor, and was probably not to be taken
- 32:34literally. Xerxes knew Esther would not
- 32:37dare approach him unless she had a very important reason.
- 32:40Esther has succeeded in arousing both his admiration and his
- 32:45curiosity. Why would a queen do the
- 32:48cooking? When Esther said she had
- 32:50prepared a banquet, she was speaking as the host, not as the
- 32:53literal cook. As Queen Esther's servants would
- 32:57have attended to her wishes. She probably had a team of
- 33:01cooks, chefs, and bakers who prepared a meal fit for a king
- 33:04like Xerxes. Why did Esther wait for the
- 33:07second banquet to make her request?
- 33:10It may have been a strategic decision by Esther.
- 33:14Perhaps she was hoping the king would grant this major request
- 33:17if he was sufficiently pleased with her.
- 33:20Or Esther may have simply and understandably lost her courage
- 33:25the first time. Or perhaps Esther was led by God
- 33:29to postpone her request, thus setting up the timing of Xerxes
- 33:34discovery of Mordecai's valor. And when he had that, we
- 33:38couldn't sleep at night and then he had to find out about
- 33:42Mordecai. Or, you know, maybe Esther did
- 33:46hesitate and then God was like, OK, that's not my will.
- 33:49You're supposed to do this. So I'm going to have to take
- 33:51over here and make him not sleep so that my will be done.
- 33:57We don't know. But there's those are all like
- 34:01good suggestions of what it could have been.
- 34:05So why did Haman build such a high pole?
- 34:08It's height indicates Haman's intense hatred for Mordecai and
- 34:13Haman's desire to make Mordecai's death a warning to
- 34:16all. Perhaps the pole was on top of a
- 34:19wall or a house, making it a total of 75 feet high.
- 34:24Since a free standing 75 foot pole would have been difficult
- 34:28to construct in one night, this implement this, yeah, implement
- 34:33of death would have been in keeping with Persian custom.
- 34:37Hebrew law also identified this form of death as an indication
- 34:41of God's curse, making the death of Haman and his sons that are
- 34:47coming in the later chapters all the more significant.
- 34:51Why had Mordecai gone unrewarded for saving the King's life?
- 34:55It's unknown. Those who helped a king in
- 34:58extraordinary ways were considered benefactors with
- 35:02almost a legal right to a reward, though it was often not
- 35:08granted immediately. Some, like Haman, undoubtedly
- 35:12would have made claim to their reward.
- 35:15Others, like Mordecai, were not so self promoting.
- 35:21What was so special about wearing a hand me down from the
- 35:24king? A King's garment had great
- 35:26significance in the ancient world.
- 35:28It was an outward physical representation of his power and
- 35:32glory to where something belonging to another signified
- 35:36sharing a part of that person's stature and honor.
- 35:40Haman's suggestion flattered the king, and since Haman
- 35:44incorrectly assumed the honor was meant for himself, was
- 35:48intended as a means to gain greater recognition and
- 35:51authority for himself. Why did he cover his head?
- 35:55To show his grief? Covering 1's head was a typical
- 35:59expression of sorrow in ancient times, and you can find that in
- 36:03Second Samuel 15 and Jeremiah 14.
- 36:06Possibly to hide one's tears or show a desire to mourn in
- 36:10private. Haman grieved for two reasons.
- 36:13Number 1, he could not. He could not dare now to the
- 36:18favoured Mordecai. He had been publicly
- 36:23humiliating, humiliated before his enemy.
- 36:28And then one more. The last question why did
- 36:30Haman's advisers think Mordecai's Jewish origin ensured
- 36:36Haman's rune? What had seemed like ideal
- 36:39circumstances for Haman's revenge had now been
- 36:43miraculously altered. The significance of this
- 36:46disastrous turn of events was not lost on Haman's advisors.
- 36:51They probably knew the ancient history of Israel, how the Jews
- 36:55had been protected during the exile, and the hostility between
- 37:00the Jews and the Amalekites. Given what they knew of previous
- 37:05events, they probably recognized Mordecai's rescue to be the
- 37:09beginning of Haman's judgment. So that ends Chapter 6, and the
- 37:14next time we will start with Chapter 7.
