2:28
Also on this show later on, we're going to get into some discussion
2:30
the continued discussion about the demolition of the Macy's building in Charleston. As I
2:35
mentioned earlier, some members of the press got a little tour of the building
2:38
on Monday. Kadan County Commissiy Benslango is going to join us to talk about
2:42
what is next as it pertains to that demolition and the proposed Capital Sports Complex
2:46
with Charleston may Or Amy Goodwin will be stopping by to talk about it as
2:51
well. Let's welcome into the show now, Kurrent Putnam County Clerk and Republican
2:53
candidate for West Virginia Secretaries State Brian Wood. Brian, good morning, welcome
2:58
to the show. Good morning, here are you, sir? I'm doing
3:00
fine, Thanks for being here. Before we talk about your run for Secretary
3:02
of State, I want to talk about your current jobs Puttnam County Clerk.
3:07
Of course, early voting set to begin here soon. The deadline to register
3:12
or do anything with your party was yesterday, so give us some more pertinent
3:16
information as it comes to the dates. I know you're doing poll worker training
3:21
now, right, Yes, sir, yes, sir. We have two
3:23
trainings this afternoon and this evening, the two and five thirty. If you're
3:29
interested in being a poll worker, please contact our office. We'd love to
3:31
have you. Now, how are the numbers looking for pole workers? Putnam
3:34
County is still needing poor workers. We're right there on the edge. But
3:38
you can always use alternative alternates. I use names and numbers. I'd rather
3:43
have too many of than not enough. And without poll workers we can't do
3:45
it. And what's what's the pay in Putnam County? Now? For two
3:49
hundred for election day, seventy five for training as long as you work election
3:53
day. So it's pretty pretty decent money. It's a long day, but
3:58
you appreciate it, won't you. I want you to, and we appreciate
4:00
them. What goes into poll worker training? I start with ay and go
4:04
to ze. I don't leave anything out because it's not fair to throw somebody
4:09
out there and just suspect them to do the job by by the laws and
4:12
keep our elections safe. So the veterans know that they're going to hear the
4:16
same speech from start to finish. And you know, it's one of those
4:21
things if you don't use it, you lose it. We're preparing about a
4:24
three hundred person army to go out there for one day and do the job
4:30
for the people, and so you know, we got to make sure that
4:33
they're prepared. They have all the knowledge and information possible. Talking again with
4:40
Putnam County Clerk and Republican candidate for Secretary of State Brian Would, before we
4:44
get into the campaign, I want to spend, as I said, some
4:46
time talking about your current job as Putnham County Clerk. How long have you
4:49
been to clerk in Putnham County going on twenty years? Twenty years? Yes,
4:54
sir. How much has it changed over the years. We could spend
4:57
like three days talking about all the changes, just to just gloss over it
5:00
a little bit. Yes, sir, you know it has changed and it's
5:04
not changed I've I've consistently had the same staff for the most part. It's
5:10
amazing. Yeah, And you're only as good as the people you surround yourself
5:13
with. And I'm just blessed to have such a good good employees throughout the
5:16
years that you know, have my back, I have their back, and
5:19
we work together to the people's work. So but but overall, technology,
5:27
you know, more things on line. Uh, you got to watch out
5:31
for you your records being never never land and you protect them, save them
5:35
and you know, make sure you have proper backups and stuff like that.
5:39
So it's a constantly moving target. Are there any changes that Putnham County voters
5:44
need to know about? I mean, where are your early voting location is
5:46
going to be appreciating anything like that? Two locations courthouse and at the Valley
5:50
park waypool and uh and same times as as normal. You can go get
5:56
those on our website there and as well. Early starts May the first and
6:00
goes through the eleventh. Deadline for absentee balloting is requested in absentee ballot is
6:08
the eighth, May eighth, and then May the fourteenth is obviously election in
6:14
the voting times are six thirty to seven thirty six thirty seven thirty PM.
6:17
Let's talk about you run for Secretary of State House the campaign, Bencer,
6:21
Oh, it's great. I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm joining traveling state
6:26
and meeting new people. It's right up my ally. I'm just a people
6:30
person, and uh, it's a big state. But I've seen parts of
6:33
it that I've never seen before. You know, when I was a kid,
6:35
we didn't have a whole lot of money, and you know, occasional
6:40
trip to the Cranberry River, Williams River to trout fish or yeah, the
6:43
deer camp in Richie County to go hunting, but we really didn't have much
6:46
money to go very many places. But this has forced me to visit different
6:55
places, and I'm happy because it's allowed me to see, you know,
6:59
parts of stay of new were seen before. So when you're out on a
7:01
campaign trail and you're doing all these you know, Lincoln Day dinners, or
7:05
you're just meeting with the public wherever it is, you're just talking to people
7:09
at whatever the event is. What do you hear from voters about the Secretary
7:13
of State's race, what they would like to see in the next Secretary of
7:15
state. Well, to be honest with you, I'm finding out that they're
7:18
not really in love with any of my opponents. They they they are tired
7:24
of the establishment. They're tired of, uh, you know, party changes
7:27
for for you know, personal gain. They're tired of keeping it in the
7:31
family politics. They're tired of you know, the Richmond north of Richmond trying
7:38
to buy elections. Uh. They're they're tired of a candidate saying and doing
7:43
anything just to get elected. And and they're they're that sorts of conversation because
7:48
they're not really in love with any of these other candidates that they have more
7:51
money than I do for the campaign purposes. Uh. It starts a conversation,
7:56
well what are alternatives? And they're finding out Brian Woods the auto alternative,
8:00
and well, what's Brian Wood's background experience, why should we vote for
8:03
him? And they're finding out that, you know, for the last twenty
8:05
years, I've kept our elections safe and secure in Putnam County. I've been
8:09
president of the Putnam Western County Clerks Association. I have relationships with all fifty
8:16
five county clerks. I know the equipment, I know the team in place,
8:20
I know the poll worker training. There's no other candidate that's did poor
8:22
worker training this last week. There's no other candidate that prepared our machines this
8:26
last week. And so there's no other candidate's going to do the public test
8:30
on Thursday tomorrow. So all that knowledge will pay dividends. There's no other
8:39
candidate that has handled a public office where they have to be elected time and
8:43
time again with multiple divisions, like the secretary of State. There's no other
8:46
job I can think of in the world that mirrors the Secretary of State more
8:50
than the county clerk's job. And so when they see that, and they
8:54
find that and they realize that I'm just an average guy, they like it.
8:58
They like it. You know. Some of my opponents they'll they'll they're
9:03
saying they're gonna defend the Second Amendment. They're right, They're gonna protect men
9:07
and women's sports. They're gonna even secure the borders. Uh and uh.
9:13
And so if if if I could do any of those things the secretary of
9:18
State, I'll do them. But really, to be honest with you,
9:22
you know, we need to concentrate on doing the business of the secretary of
9:24
State. You know, we don't need to be creating any new programs.
9:30
We need to do what we do, but based upon what the law requires
9:33
us to do it, do it well and get out of people's way.
9:35
And so, uh, you know, it's it's more of a management's position
9:39
of managing people and serving the and serving the people. And I've done it
9:43
for the last twenty years. I encourage anybody to reach out to somebody and
9:46
Putnam County and ask them, uh, you know, what's Brown would like?
9:50
You know, as a reference, what I'm hearing you say, and
9:52
I don't want to put words in about the BROB. What I'm hearing you
9:54
say is is that and this this goes on in all races besides just the
9:58
secretary of State. Is that campaign promises are put out there about things that
10:03
you're going to do. And what you're saying is as as a secretary of
10:07
State or attorney general any of those other that you don't really have the power
10:11
to do those things. No, sir, we're the executive branch of government.
10:15
So the law requires us to do certain certain things, and we need
10:20
to adoutize and cross the tease on those certain things and do them well.
10:24
And then once we do them well, we're serving the people that when when
10:28
somebody comes to the Secretary State, they're there because we force them there in
10:31
some way, whether they need a permit, whether they need to register their
10:37
business, whether they need You understand what I'm saying, And that's within any
10:43
government. So the best thing that a government can do is to know their
10:48
job well, prepare their employees to serve those people as quickly as possible and
10:54
accurately as possible, and then get out of their way and let them do
10:56
the thing their thing. We don't need to to create government more government,
11:05
just so we can put our name on that program and say, look at
11:09
what I've did, Look at me, look at me. But Dave Alan
11:13
on five eighty line, Bright Apart by Husband's Pizza where you can get a
11:15
large at and inach pepperoni pizza at a large toss of it only twenty ninety
11:18
nine at your favorite Huston's location. Bryan, elections are secure in West Virginia.
11:26
How do we continue that? Well, you've had for Brian Wood?
11:30
All right, Well, drop the mic, Brian, it's over. Interviews
11:33
over. But you know, we must protect our voter verified paper trail with
11:37
our electronic equipment. We must fight the Washington takeover of local election laws.
11:45
You know, I feel that government's better built from the ground up than the
11:48
top down. And nobody knows West Virginia than West Virginians, and so we
11:52
need to keep our local elections and our local election laws so we can adapt
11:58
and change and hold people can here in West Virginia, rather than a Washington
12:01
takeover or local elections, which would you know, promote things like Sam david
12:07
a registration drop boxes, no excuse absentee balloting, which leads to ballot harvesting,
12:13
things like that, all the all the scary stuff that you see on
12:16
the news and in these other states, and stuff like that that could happen
12:22
here if we don't watch out, and I would, you know, there's
12:24
one thing I would do, and that's definitely to protect our protect those rights
12:30
and fight for those right And I've done it in the past. I've done
12:33
as the President County Clerks Associate, I led a team of fifty four out
12:37
of h five county clerks to fight that Washington takeover in back in twenty twenty
12:41
one, I believe it's one two. They had a bill in Washington to
12:46
take over our local elections and We had one right here in the state that
12:52
one of my candidates was sponsor on and so, and I fight at the
13:00
inn and I'll fight it in the future, because you know, we need
13:03
to take care of our business in West Virginia. Speaking of business, Brian,
13:07
before we let you go, what about the other aspects of the office?
13:09
I mean, we spent a lot of time talking about elections, because
13:11
again that's the that's the sexy stuff, as I always say, But there's
13:15
a lot more people employed in that office, in the business division, in
13:18
charitable or charitable endeavors, notaries, private investigators, your hua, your church,
13:24
your little league. All that goes through Secretary of State's office. What
13:26
are you doing to educate yourself on that stuff? So, just like it
13:30
did with Kenny Clerk, you know, one step at a time. My
13:35
opponents, they concentrate on the business side of thing more than the election side
13:39
of things, because they have no clue about the election side of thing.
13:41
On the business side of thing, it's just like managing. It's managing the
13:45
people. It's managed in the office, it's and and so what they got
13:52
They want to say that only six people are designate to the elections, which
13:56
is which is true and not true because you know as well as I do
14:00
you work there. When it comes to election time, it's all hands on
14:03
deck. Everybody's pulling the rope, whether it be in investigators you know that
14:07
are not designated elections, but they investigate election crimes, right, whether it
14:11
be the the the what you did before, the field team, field team,
14:18
they're pulled in to help with the elections. Yeah, you know,
14:22
I'm aware the cyber side of things is security all part of it, and
14:28
so so the whole team is part of the elections. So when they want
14:33
to narrow it down to just six people, that's only because they know that
14:37
I stack up up here versus them down here when it comes to the election
14:41
side of things. When it comes to the business side of things, like
14:43
I say, it's managing on office and it's managing people, and I've done
14:48
it for twenty years actually twenty six years of public office if you count my
14:52
two terms as Matt, prior to being the kind of clerk. You have
14:54
a website or social medium you'd like to Yes, website is would for WV
15:01
dot com, would for WV dot com. All right, for Brian,
15:05
wish you the best of luck. I'm going to give you the final thirty
15:09
here, all right. So you're finding yourself in this Republican primary facing off
15:15
you know who the All the opponents have been on the show one time or
15:16
another. So what makes Brian would the better candidate for West Virginia Secretary State's
15:22
office. I believe I want it for the right reasons. I'm not going
15:26
to run for governor. I'm not going to run for Congress. I want
15:28
to be Secretary of State. To be your Secretary State. If you want
15:33
somebody with twenty plus years of experience and managed in the public office, I'm
15:37
your guy. If you want somebody that normal puts her pants on one leg
15:41

15:46

Experience, experience, experience, He has it. You don't hire a

19:44
and laughter coming to us from Commissioner Ben Selango. Hey Man, good morning,
19:49
got a text to the show a couple of days ago. People all
19:52
in the Selango for governor thing. It's back that ship sailed as she well,
20:02
but you know that was I look back on that experience though it was
20:04
it was a great experience, even though you know, Governor Justice beat me
20:08
like a rented mule. It was a it was a great It was a
20:11
great experience. It really was. All right, So we got a lot
20:15
of stuff I want to get in and by the way, I do I
20:17
want to apologize. We did have the mayor schedule for the show today,
20:19
but as they sit on the Brady Bunch, something suddenly came up. It
20:22
happened. It happens, and uh, and she got a city to run,
20:26
not a radio show to do. So I will give her a pass
20:29
on that. This is the third time, though, Selango, that you've
20:30
been on the show in the last week and a half. I'm gonna be
20:36
going on vacation at some point this year. I don't know when. You
20:38
just want to go ahead and plan on taking on the show and make it.
20:41
You would lose all your listeners if you let me touch other well,
20:44
I don't have a whole lot left now. But all right, so I
20:48
was, I was with you and the mayor Commisiter carper Is. There several
20:52
members of the media on the walk through before the demolition of the Macy's building
20:57
on the little media event was all on Monday. There's going to be a
21:00
press conference I think held tomorrow. A lot of memories in that building,
21:04
and I mean just walking through that building a commissioner on Monday. And you
21:11
know, I probably don't have the memories that someone from Charleston does because I
21:15
didn't grow up here. But I spent a whole lot of time in the
21:18
town center traveling there, as did you. You know you didn't grow up
21:21
in this area, right, but you'd certainly spend a lot of time here
21:22
just walking through what was Macy's and Kaufman's, you know before that. That's
21:26
a lot of memories, you know. And that's the funny. I didn't.
21:29
That's the first time I had been in the Macy's building since it closed.
21:32
And so when I I went back. I moved to Charleston in two
21:37
thousand, joined Flerty sens Ball of Nassoh and came here. I was working
21:41
in Beckley as a lawyer, and I remember Tara and I registered at Kaufman's
21:48
in two thousand and one, you know, before we got married, and
21:49
I remember going over and we picked out our wedding gifts, and you know,
21:55
we didn't know if anybody buys it anything. We have this china pattern.
21:59
You know, people got like three pieces of china. But that's what
22:03
those were. The memories that I that fled back to me was being in
22:06
there. I've remembered exactly where everything was back then when it was Kaufman's.
22:11
Now a funny story about that. Right after we got married, somebody kicked
22:14
in our door and stole all of our wedding presents. The week after we
22:18
were meeting somebody, somebody kicked on our door and stole every wedding present except
22:22
for the three pieces of china. I remember Teary and I were standing there
22:26
in our apartment and everything was wiped out, and I said, that's how
22:29
you know when you picked out we picked out an ugly passage. I was
22:32
going to say, I mean, the thieves didn't even want you china.
22:34
They didn't even want it. But yeah, so many memories for so many
22:37
people in that building. And if you saw the pictures that that we posted
22:41
in some of the TV stations, in the paper, whatever you see,
22:45
there was broken glass everywhere in that building. And there was a reason for
22:48
that uh that was being used as a training facility. Yeah, the FBI
22:52
used it to train to do some some different training exercises. And you know,
22:59
the thought that occurred to me though, was they're using rubber bullets,
23:03
but those things really must pack a punch, because it broke the glass,
23:07
It put holes in walls. I mean it was I can't imagine getting hit
23:10
with one of those. Yeah, all the all the emergency services, police
23:12
and all the military people are going yeah, yeah, I bet yeah,
23:15
yeah they do. So this is all to be done for the for the
23:19
proposed sports complex. We start to demolition tomorrow tomorrow. Yeah. So they've
23:26
they've started leveling an area. Rodney Loftus, who's you know, he's the
23:30
guru. He knows how to do all this. He did the Sears building.
23:34
So they've already started leveling as an area for staging. So when we
23:38
get there tomorrow for the press conference, some of the building may be down,
23:41
like the uh, the the awning part. They may take that down
23:48
because they needed to. They need it level to stage the equipment. So
23:51
but for all intents and purposes, the the demo will start tomorrow. This
23:55
is this has been a long process. It has been a difficult and complicated
23:59
process. You know, when we did Shawnee, it was already owned by
24:03
the county. You know, it was relatively flat. I call it West
24:06
Virginia flat, so it's kind of rolling so and ish flat ish and and
24:11
we didn't have didn't really have that many structures to build. So when we
24:15
did China, we were able to do it in like nine months. Uh
24:19
this is a little different because there's it's such a large project. We didn't
24:23
have the property. So property acquisition was a was a big hurdle, took
24:29
a lot of time, and and not just for the negotiation part, but
24:32
also for the the legal part because there were so many different interests. Hold
24:36
that thought a Ryan Ryan producer, Ryan, I'm getting the text show that
24:38
the mayor is going to try to call in. Uh So, she just
24:42
texted me and said that she's going to attempt to call in. So uh
24:47
so, I guess we will have the mayor after all. So, so
24:51
the press conferences at what time tomorrow? One o'clock? Okay, one o'clock.
24:55
So we're going to do that at the at the Macy's outside of the
24:59
Macy's building. And you know, it's just a way to kind of update
25:03
on everybody on the progress what we've done. All right, I think we
25:06
do have the Mayor via the big lely piggly wiggly hotline. Mayor, good
25:08
morning, how are you? May Are you there? Okay? Mayor?
25:15
Are you there? Sir? Hi? Okay, there you are. I'm
25:17
sorry about that, Hi, Fellas. I didn't well if we went from
25:21
you being on the show to not being on the show. So I apologize
25:23
that we didn't know what you were gonna be calling him no worries. Well,
25:26
Ben's texted me and said, I will totally ridicule you, make fun
25:30
of you if you don't call it. I did say that it's been horrendous.
25:33
I mean it's it's been. It's been really really bad. I hope
25:36
you haven't been a listening Mayor. It's been all I haven't because I told
25:38
you how to speaking. When he said let's go in, I said,
25:41
cancel it. All right? All right, So basically what we've talked about,
25:45
Mayor. We talked about the walk through on Monday, UH with the
25:48
UH over the Macy build, who's been a little bit of time talking about
25:51
that. We talked about the memories and about how uh carper or Commissioner Selango's
25:56
china got stolen? Stolen? I did not get I registered for china too.
26:00
Well, well, his didn't get sold him because apparently he picked out
26:03
some ugly china and they broke into his apartment, sold everything but the china.
26:07
All right, So the press conference is going to be held tomorrow and
26:12
then we start this project talk about mayor, and then Ben, I'll let
26:15
you follow up with that, talk about mayor. What this is going to
26:18
mean to downtown Charleston. You know, we started talking about this honestly.
26:22
You know when somebody said this is new, I said, no, this
26:25
isn't new. We've been talking about this since twenty fourteen. I remember like
26:27
it was yesterday. I was sitting in in my kitchen and started talking to
26:36
Ben Selango. Gosh, I don't even think you were a commissioner then.
26:38
No, it wasn't no, it wasn't no. It was just a soccer
26:41
dad. And you were traveling around with Cayden right right, and saying what
26:45
are we doing? Because this is when I was Tourism commissioner. I said,
26:48
I'm here and wherever he was at this huge, big event, and
26:53
why can't we do that, and you know, obviously the grossest sports tourism
26:59
has just grown monumentally, So you can't even just talk about what it'll do
27:03
for the city and not just really even for the county. You really have
27:07
to talk about what it's going to do for the entire Tri state region.
27:11
This is going to be the place and the space in which we not only
27:15
give our local kids a place to play and excel. We have a lot
27:22
of kids that go on to receive college scholarships in basketball and volleyball, and
27:29
they may not play for you know, the NFL one day or the NBA
27:34
one day or the WNBA, but they get money and they go to school.
27:38
And to give kids places and spaces so they can excel locally, it's
27:42
one of the reasons why we turfed, you know, our turf in eleven
27:45
fields in two years. But what it will bring to the region. You
27:51
know, two years ago when we did this study or started looking at this
27:55
study, it was nineteen billion dollars in eighteen thirteen, little maybe even shy
28:02
of that, I guess now it's over forty plus billion daves B and we
28:07
just want a piece of that. We just want a piece of that and
28:11
I don't know how much Commissioner Solang talked about, but you know, this
28:15
is just the start. This is the start of what we can be if
28:18
we do it right. I always used to say when I was tours and
28:22
commissioner, and I say today, everybody thinks of tourism as the fun people
28:26
or the money people. If Governor Justice, if there is one thing that
28:32
I will say he has gotten spot on one hundred percent right, it's tourism.
28:37
The Tourism Department is killing it. The investment in tourism, they are
28:41
killing it. And for good reason. He sees the value, he sees
28:45
the return on investment. And so you know, we're taking a page again
28:49
out of not only twenty fourteen when the first study was done, but most
28:55
recent when the you know, nineteen twenty twenty one report was done, and
29:00
just to get a piece of this. So it's more than just what it's
29:03
going to do for downtown and the mall area. And you know we said
29:06
that the press availability the other day, this has nothing to do with them
29:11
all. It doesn't. I know that is hard to imagine, but it
29:15
simply does not have anything to do with the mall. It has to do
29:17
with what we're doing as a growing city, moving forward, a growing county
29:22
moving forward. Nineteen eighty three was a great time to build a mall.
29:26
But if you look at the Mall of America right nowadays and what they're doing
29:30
in the Mall of America. You know what they're building in the Mall of
29:33
America, Tell me a sports center. You know what they're building on the
29:37
other side of indoor water park. We are evolving to the next space.
29:41
What are we going to be in the next twenty years? What will that
29:45
be? And no, it's not a you know, it's not a mall
29:51
type of facility as we remember malls used to be. By the way,
29:53
That's okay, that's okay. But what we're going to put in this place
29:59
is going to have, I believe, a far greater return. I want
30:02
to talk about them. I want to talk about the financial aspect of it
30:03
because and some mister Salango has been on the show and may or you have
30:07
to talking about this. But just in case somebody has questions, how is
30:11
this being paid for? So the first thing that we did, you know,
30:14
the city Council and the County Commission each put in five million dollars.
30:18
We've received a two million dollar I still call them earmarks. I think they're
30:22
technically called congressionally directed spending from Senator Mansion. So we've got twelve million that's
30:27
going to handle the demo, that will handle the design, that will handle
30:32
starting the construction. What we've done now was we've put in more federal earmark
30:37
requests and we should hear hopefully soon on those anything. And then of course
30:42
we're going to ask the state to come in and help. You know,
30:45
if there's an interest there and anything else that is not whatever's left after that,
30:52
then we have to do bonds. Just basically, you take a loan.
30:57
That's that's how you do it. And we did that with Shawnee.
31:02
You know, we paid a little bit of cash. We we did a
31:04
I think it was around seventeen million, maybe a little bit less than that
31:08
in bonds, and we paid it off in three years. You know,
31:12
so Shawnee is is debt free and look at the tremendous impact that that's had.
31:18
So this will be similar to that. You know, the goal is
31:21
to try to get as many partners as we can and also corporate partners.
31:25
Don't forget that. I mean, a major part of the Shawne Sports Complex
31:27
was when back then Brick Straight Now and Coba came in and gave us one
31:30
point five million dollars. And I say this all the time, Shawnee would
31:33
not have been built but for Greg Burton and in Koba. So we'll have
31:37
corporate partners as well. There will be a lot of sponsorship opportunities to try
31:42
to decrease the amount that we have to bond. So that's that's the goal.
31:48
Okay. I had a text here it said, is the hotel at
31:52
the Old Seers ever going to be built? You? Yeah, I'm my
31:56
understanding as it is, Yeah, I think there was. First of all,
32:01
construction prices are really high right now, so you've got to we're trying
32:06
to see what it's going to be per square foot a year and a half
32:07
two years from now, so that may be an issue there. But I'm
32:12
not going to speak for the hotel owners. But my understanding is that's you
32:15
know, that's going forward. It isn't you know. This is also going
32:17
to be hard to believe, but it is true. We could use another
32:21
hotel, yeah, absolutely not line. We could use another hotel. And
32:24
you know, as I said, that's just that's just for downtown Charleston.
32:29
I'm sure that areas of Saint Albans, South Charleston, Tays Valley will tell
32:34
you the same thing. Yes, sir, absolutely, and it is if
32:38
you were you were in Charleston last weekend or the weekend before, not only
32:44
could you not get a place that you could have less than a forty five
32:47
minute wait to sit down and have a slice pizza for the patrons. Sometimes
32:53
it's not really great for a mayor. It's yes, so glad to see
32:58
that, but it was also hard getting hotels because it was so booked,
33:01
you know, one hundred and twenty teams, two thousand volleyball athletes. As
33:07
I have mentioned yesterday in another interview, that's just a small little piece of
33:12
what you'll see with a facility like this, and again playing on the reason
33:17
why this location is so good is because it's proximity to the coliseum and convention
33:23
Center, which, by the way, you'll know that the past administration used
33:29
least revenue bonds for not only the ballpark, but the coliseum and convention center
33:35
as well, so that was you know, the upgrades that were done there
33:42
were extremely helpful and going to be helpful as we build onto this facility,
33:45
maye before we let you go. And I would be remiss if I did
33:49
not ask you for a comment on the situation with the two restaurants with chop
33:53
House and Tidewater. I am told that not really no one saw this coming
33:59
on. So I go and I talked about it a couple of days ago.
34:00
Your thoughts and any comment on that, Yeah, First and foremost,
34:05
I'll say this, I was a server for seven years. I know what
34:07
it's like to be a waitress. That's what I did, paying my way
34:10
through school. Uh, and so to get that notice as they did,
34:15
that was my That's my first thought is that's a shame. Some of those
34:20
employees have worked there for a decade plus. But I found out the same
34:25
way that those folks found out, and that's a shame. So that's number
34:30
one, and number two is what we know. We know what will happen,
34:36
because this isn't just a stick our finger in the air and let's see
34:38
which way the wind is blowing. We know these types of facilities will bring
34:44
that type of investment. And quite frankly, we've already had several people call
34:47
I was on the phone this morning at seven twenty with somebody who's interested in
34:52
making more investment in this area. And you know what we're calling it in
34:54
the city of Charleston with everything that's going on, this sports and entertain paintment,
35:00
you know, hub of town. All right, Mayor, I appreciate
35:04

46:02

46:07
time my family spends in Ohio and Indiana playing sports would be great to get
46:13
some of that back. We've looked at enough of their cornfields from the cars.
46:17
Hashtag boring, says a Texter. On poll worker issue Texas, Dave,
46:23
is there any dancing involved in the poll worker training? I hope not.
46:29
I hope not. That's all I gotta say about that. Mike Tony
46:32
of the Gazette Mail is out with the story this morning that the federal election
46:37
regulators are asking Governor Justices Senate campaign what happened to some of the debt that
46:45
the campaign reported that it owed to one of his companies that has a bunch
46:51
of tax leans against it. According to the story, the FEC, the
46:55
Elections Commission there is saying that the Justice Campaign twenty twenty three year in report
47:02
left off debts owed to the Greenbrier Hotel Corporation. Now the report says the
47:07
Greenbrier Hotel Corp. Is owed about eighty five thousand dollars for facility rentals for
47:16
audio visual things, catering, things of that nature, which when I'm presuming
47:22
it was a campaign related event. And again, Mike Tony has a story
47:25
in this morning's paper. And I listened to Hoppy's interview with the governor yesterday
47:30
and he the Governor told Hoppy this is as it pertains to the Greenbrier,
47:35
not to the Justice Campaign, but to the Greenbrier specifically. The Governor says
47:37
the Greenbrier, which is supposedly technically owned by the Justice family, not the
47:45
governor, but the family is on a payment plan to straighten out Leans with
47:52
the state tax Department and the term making payments on it, you know,
47:55
like you would lay away at Kmart in the nineteen seventies. He said,
48:00
quote here, all's good in the neighborhood. That's a direct quote from the
48:05
governor's interview on talking with Hoppy yesterday. You can read the entire story by
48:08
Brad at WV metronews dot com. But does any of this really matter?
48:13
I mean, Jim Justice is going to win a Republican nomination for Centate.
48:16
With all due respect to Alex Mooney there, I just don't see a way
48:20
forward. As they say, there's no way he can catch up at this
48:23
point, and then Justice will more than likely face we Lean Mayor Glenn Elliott
48:29
in a general election for the seat currently occupied by Senator Joe Manchin. And
48:34
with all due respect to Mary Elliott, who have had on this show,
48:37
very capable candidate, I don't see you way forward for Mary Elliott either.
48:43
A lot can change, I know between now November, but I'm just saying
48:45
I don't really see Jim Justice losing that race either. In West Virginia,
48:51
the city of West Virginia, I'm talking about the people of West Virginia know
48:57
all about Jim justice financial issues, and they simply they simply don't care,
49:06
much like they don't care about anything bad pretending to former President Trump. The
49:10
difference is, though, I don't think anyone is denying the financial issues of
49:15
the governor, either Justice himself or the public. I mean, they know
49:21
it, they believe it. They simply don't care. Talking about the public
49:22
now and with Trump, the people know it, and they simply, in
49:30
this case, choose not to believe it. From January sixth, to Stormy
49:35
Daniels, to the attempt at election interference, to the taking in classified documents,
49:38
et cetera, et cetera, the public knows. They simply don't care,
49:43
and supporters don't care. Why do you think the former president continues to
49:47
run his mouth either online or at the courthouse in New York? I mean,
49:53
do you really think he cares if he's found in contempt? The more
49:58
court cases, the batter, the more accusations, the better. It does
50:02
nothing but strengthen him among his base, which is as sounding to me,
50:10
and I'm a Republican, they don't seem to care that Trump ran up more
50:16
debt than any president in US history, that he said he was going to
50:20
build a wall and didn't, and that the evangelical sides rally around a guy
50:25
who has been married multiple times and is currently in court for relations or at
50:30
least lying about certain aspects of relationships with a porn star. Did you and
50:38
did you see this? Or the weekend Millennia, the former first Lady is
50:42
out rallying the LGBTQ and trans community for votes for their husband or for her
50:49
husband. Now, I wonder how that's setting with the evangelicals. Most don't
50:53
care. Back to the governor, who is not accused of having sex with
50:59
porn stars. The people elected him as a Democrat in twenty sixteen knowing all
51:04
of these things about its financial issues, and they're probably going to elect him,
51:08
and he's more likely to be elected now as a Republican in twenty twenty
51:14
four with about triple the knowledge of all of the financial issues. You got
51:17
to hand it to the guy. Though he's good, He's really really good.
