- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Coming up NHL Unscripted, that's right, the film of the Year,
- 0:24Speaker 1: mister Scorsese, Unbelievable five parts, four and a half hours
- 0:27Speaker 1: and Apple TV plus me and tal of Watch. We're
- 0:30Speaker 1: going to dig into it. It's unbelievable. Also the Avalanche
- 0:32Speaker 1: paying tribute to the Quebec Nordiakas.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I love this, Let's go nordi ICs stolen.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Also Gabe Polski, filmmaker and former hockey player, I'll tell
- 0:40Speaker 1: us about paying for the Yale Bulldogs, what he thought
- 0:42Speaker 1: about playing for their head coach, and also working with
- 0:44Speaker 1: Nicholas Cage. He's got a new documentary out, and Matt
- 0:47Speaker 1: Schaefers Jason de Murz developed a bit of a crush.
- 0:50Speaker 1: All of the game's great bright lights right now eighteen years.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Always been absolutely brilliant right of the gate, Gendie, this
- 0:55Speaker 1: is a podcast in which you have done your best
- 0:56Speaker 1: to bring in players that you played with, current players
- 0:59Speaker 1: as well, and yet despite your best average, this is
- 1:01Speaker 1: a home for broadcasters and filmmakers. Last year we had
- 1:03Speaker 1: on Shot McDonough. This past week we've received Levy we've
- 1:07Speaker 1: had recently this Chris Berman, John Butchers, and now Gabe
- 1:10Speaker 1: Polski filmmaker. How do you feel about that?
- 1:14Speaker 3: I mean, we're a hockey podcast that is highlighting sportscasters
- 1:21Speaker 3: and analysts and movie directors, and I might be me.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Maybe nobody wants to come on, and maybe I wasn't
- 1:28Speaker 3: as liked as I thought I was in the NHL.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Jesus Christ. Maybe Talas is trying not to He's trying
- 1:33Speaker 3: to let me down easy. But I'm giving him gold here.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I don't know how he's got He's got a rolodex
- 1:38Speaker 3: that some people would would spooge over in.
- 1:40Speaker 2: The hockey world.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Every week sends a phone number of a current or
- 1:46Speaker 1: former player. And it's not like never heard of that
- 1:47Speaker 1: kind like no, like everyone knows these guys are that
- 1:49Speaker 1: you're sending and yet just haven't delivered these guys. Is
- 1:53Speaker 1: it Talent? Is it me?
- 1:54Speaker 2: Who knows tal what's going on? Are you even sending
- 1:57Speaker 2: text messages? Or is this just you?
- 1:59Speaker 3: They're they're coming, You're.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Satisfying your You need to just chat.
- 2:05Speaker 3: He's trying to get another Whaler's documentary made enough.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I'll say this when Gabe Polski the first thing he's
- 2:12Speaker 1: gonna be popped on. He didn't say, odd Man, good
- 2:14Speaker 1: to talk to you again. I've interviewed Hi twice before
- 2:16Speaker 1: and sent a foul. He didn't go Jason Burr's big Fanny,
- 2:18Speaker 1: We're a big hockey fan. All he said was because
- 2:20Speaker 1: Tal Pincheski, Tal, have we met before? Like I definitely
- 2:23Speaker 1: know your name.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Said he said, we've met before, Tal, and even towd
- 2:29Speaker 3: big dog.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Tal's like, He's like, did we He's like, yeah, now, but.
- 2:34Speaker 1: That time is I love your work, but we never
- 2:35Speaker 1: actually met. He's like, well, we we swim in the
- 2:37Speaker 1: same circles. And then he told the story, but a
- 2:39Speaker 1: guy better, We'll get to that.
- 2:41Speaker 2: He rubbed shoulders with the greats.
- 2:46Speaker 1: We're gonna get to Verner, Herzog and all that. There's
- 2:48Speaker 1: a lot going on right now in the hockey world,
- 2:50Speaker 1: so let's get to it. Never totally to dive back
- 2:51Speaker 1: in the early season overreactions Connor McDavid. He finally scored, hooray,
- 2:56Speaker 1: had seven assists in six games with the oiler's rank,
- 2:59Speaker 1: you know, the Bob of the league and goals for
- 3:00Speaker 1: going to have just eight goals in six teams at
- 3:03Speaker 1: five and five. That was going in the last night game,
- 3:04Speaker 1: Avan Bouchard JD he got his first point. He was
- 3:07Speaker 1: minus five in six games, all those right now, three
- 3:10Speaker 1: three and one. What do you make of this middling
- 3:12Speaker 1: start for a team that was in the Cup final
- 3:14Speaker 1: last year.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Well, I was on with like Nick Kipprios and those
- 3:17Speaker 3: guys on sports Net and they kind of asked me
- 3:19Speaker 3: that same thing a couple of days ago, and I
- 3:21Speaker 3: was like, you know, I've been mullling with it, sitting
- 3:23Speaker 3: on it, and I'm like, you know, the McDavid side
- 3:25Speaker 3: of it, not scoring, even after he came out and
- 3:28Speaker 3: posted all these you know, these comments saying he wants
- 3:32Speaker 3: to score more and that's kind of been more enjoyable
- 3:34Speaker 3: to him than getting one hundred sists fifty goals, and
- 3:36Speaker 3: I'm and I just feel like he's maybe when you
- 3:40Speaker 3: kind of put that out there and you start talking
- 3:42Speaker 3: about that, I feel like as a player, you start
- 3:44Speaker 3: looking for it instead of just playing your game. And
- 3:46Speaker 3: in the beauty of Connor McDavid, as we all know,
- 3:49Speaker 3: is the fact that he can create space, and he's
- 3:52Speaker 3: so unique and he's so talented and otherworldly, that yeah,
- 3:57Speaker 3: is he's in position to score, but a lot of
- 3:59Speaker 3: the time everybody's focusing on him and he's able to
- 4:00Speaker 3: slide that little pass through defenseman's feet for a tap.
- 4:03Speaker 3: And so now he's like, seems like he's looking and
- 4:06Speaker 3: include in on scoring and scoring more goals. And I
- 4:09Speaker 3: feel like that maybe just kind of took him out
- 4:12Speaker 3: of his game a little bit instead of just just
- 4:14Speaker 3: play your.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Game, just keep playing your game.
- 4:15Speaker 3: You're you know, like I made a joke, but I
- 4:17Speaker 3: was like, this fucking guy's on side quest right now
- 4:20Speaker 3: because he's already completed everything he needs to do in
- 4:22Speaker 3: the NHL, and he's like, ah, he's like, yeah, just
- 4:24Speaker 3: for fun this year, I'm gonna play with my skates
- 4:26Speaker 3: on backwards and he's like I'm gonna He's like, I'm
- 4:29Speaker 3: gonna do I'm gonna play to Night blindfold. And it's
- 4:31Speaker 3: like just kind of you know, and I feel like
- 4:33Speaker 3: him putting that out there that he wants to score
- 4:36Speaker 3: more goals maybe just made him pulled the trigger more.
- 4:39Speaker 3: But then it took him out of the positions that
- 4:42Speaker 3: he's he's accustomed to being in. So it's good to
- 4:45Speaker 3: see him get back on the scoreboard. I mean, this
- 4:47Speaker 3: team we always talk about We talked about it, you
- 4:50Speaker 3: know early last year. This team just out of the
- 4:52Speaker 3: gate is perennially slow. They they kind of always go
- 4:58Speaker 3: up and down until they get pissed off. It's like
- 5:01Speaker 3: their board or something, and they just want to get
- 5:02Speaker 3: to the playoffs. So I do think they're missing Hymen.
- 5:05Speaker 3: I think that's a big piece. And it was good
- 5:07Speaker 3: getting Jake.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Walman back last night.
- 5:08Speaker 3: The scores the overtime winner, but I think Hymen's a
- 5:12Speaker 3: big piece missing there, and once he comes back, I
- 5:14Speaker 3: think they're gonna, you know, rattle off of six seven
- 5:17Speaker 3: game winning streak.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, Hymen's been broken, but once he's back, things will
- 5:20Speaker 1: be better. In the meantime. The Detroit Red Wings, how
- 5:23Speaker 1: about it. You praised their coach, Todd McClellan, former Sharks coach,
- 5:26Speaker 1: for call them out right out of the gate after
- 5:28Speaker 1: opening night, ripping off five straight wins. Now looking fantastic,
- 5:32Speaker 1: Dylan Larkin leading the way eleven points in six games.
- 5:35Speaker 1: You know, we've been waiting for the Eyes are playing
- 5:37Speaker 1: ninety years or this is it? Make it a break
- 5:38Speaker 1: it they don't make the playffs DEVI wise out of
- 5:40Speaker 1: a job. Heads are gonna roll Dylan Larkin for the heart.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Talk to me, Dylan Larkin for the heart. Taylor Hall
- 5:47Speaker 3: asked back, with the Devils, that's what it needs to be.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Listen.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I think I watched their game the other night against
- 5:56Speaker 3: who'd they play last San Jose.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I think they played San Jose.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Last San Jose Edmonton, And I mean, I like these
- 6:06Speaker 3: young guys they brought in this Emmitt Finney is a
- 6:09Speaker 3: revelation right now. And I say that because he's part
- 6:12Speaker 3: of the coalition of the seventh rounders and myself.
- 6:15Speaker 1: It was on Sunday four too. I don't know though
- 6:17Speaker 1: that was the game you talk about it.
- 6:18Speaker 3: That that was it. Yes, that was the one I watched.
- 6:20Speaker 3: I was trying to think of who it was. But
- 6:21Speaker 3: Emmitt Finny scored. He scored and he had the empty netter, right, So,
- 6:25Speaker 3: but you know, coalition of the seventh rounders, and I
- 6:29Speaker 3: have solitude with those guys. I was a former seventh
- 6:32Speaker 3: rounder when I was twenty. He's a great player. Branson
- 6:35Speaker 3: Nygard really good. He's been really effective. He plays a
- 6:38Speaker 3: great like two way game. Then you have sandyne Pellico's
- 6:41Speaker 3: providing them a little bit of offense from the back end.
- 6:44Speaker 3: It's and the kind of undercover thing. I think we
- 6:48Speaker 3: all mentioned it this offseason and we said John Gibson
- 6:52Speaker 3: going there is going to be an interesting thing because
- 6:55Speaker 3: Cam Talbot had phenomenal numbers last year early, but then
- 6:59Speaker 3: he burns himself out and they didn't have anybody to
- 7:01Speaker 3: kind of pick up the slock. Now they kind of
- 7:03Speaker 3: have two like older, you know, seasoned veteran goalies. But
- 7:07Speaker 3: I think if they kind of split the split the
- 7:09Speaker 3: load a little bit Bonnie Blue style, I think they'll
- 7:12Speaker 3: be able to that's probably getting cut out.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Who knows, if you don't call attention, there's always a
- 7:21Speaker 4: chance if you split, you know, if they split the
- 7:26Speaker 4: games and and and kind of split the split the workload,
- 7:31Speaker 4: I think it's going to surprise some people.
- 7:33Speaker 3: John Gibson is still a great goalie when he's healthy,
- 7:36Speaker 3: so there's that could be The kind of the pickup
- 7:39Speaker 3: of the offseason was John Gibson. As we move on,
- 7:42Speaker 3: and it's kind of no one's really talked about him
- 7:44Speaker 3: because they forgot about Detroit. But more importantly and more excitingly,
- 7:48Speaker 3: I think, and I don't know how you guys feel,
- 7:50Speaker 3: but this just feels like the Atlantic this year, which
- 7:52Speaker 3: we kind of called it that it was kind of
- 7:54Speaker 3: a crapshoot and it was going to be with the injuries,
- 7:57Speaker 3: it was kind of gonna be. We we wouldn't know
- 7:58Speaker 3: how it would shake out. I think it's we might
- 8:01Speaker 3: see a few different teams top the in the top three,
- 8:05Speaker 3: and I think there's gonna be some teams that we
- 8:07Speaker 3: don't expect to be.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Battling for.
- 8:10Speaker 3: A wild card in the Atlantic. But I a lot
- 8:13Speaker 3: to like from a lot of these teams early on,
- 8:14Speaker 3: you know, Detroit, especially coming in Montreal, like the Atlantic's
- 8:18Speaker 3: an interesting interesting I don't know how you feel, but
- 8:20Speaker 3: it's very interesting how it's gonna play out.
- 8:22Speaker 1: I'm with you because you feel like Florida, Toronto, Tampa
- 8:25Speaker 1: is in some you know, form of top three. But
- 8:27Speaker 1: as I said, Ottawa right now, they're kind of maddling,
- 8:30Speaker 1: but you expect better than they had ninety four points.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Of Florida's injured.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Right Detroit's been a pleasant surprise to We talked about
- 8:35Speaker 1: Montreal's five and two right now. Just saw our boy
- 8:37Speaker 1: Lane Hudson in prime Monday night hockey Boston. I'm seeing
- 8:40Speaker 1: them two Monday. Actually they're taking the out of centers
- 8:42Speaker 1: are not they're gonna fall off. Yeah, Buffalo knock right.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Obviously that's nothing surprising, but yeah, it could be a
- 8:47Speaker 1: little bit of a I've been changing at the guard there.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Tampa has been bad, right, Tampa has been really bad.
- 8:52Speaker 3: So it could be like Florida, I feel like is
- 8:54Speaker 3: one of those teams that could slide into the wildcard
- 8:57Speaker 3: spot if they, you know, because if those how long
- 8:59Speaker 3: those guys are out and you know, they beat Boston
- 9:02Speaker 3: last night but barely on a lucky goal.
- 9:04Speaker 2: So is kind of one of those.
- 9:06Speaker 3: It's gonna be interesting if they can hold on long
- 9:08Speaker 3: enough for those guys to get healthy. But yeah, it's
- 9:10Speaker 3: in Detroit. Listen, Dylan Larkin, he has wings on his back.
- 9:15Speaker 3: He's Dylan Larkin. Is not LARPing out there.
- 9:18Speaker 5: He is.
- 9:18Speaker 3: He's full Larkin and he's driving this team. But I
- 9:22Speaker 3: think Emmitt Finney's is somebody to watch. All you fans
- 9:25Speaker 3: out there, all you unscripted fanatics, keep an eye on
- 9:28Speaker 3: old Emmitt Finney.
- 9:29Speaker 2: The seventh rounder.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Well, listen, there's always a different player year that comes
- 9:33Speaker 1: up to the You go, I wasn't expecting that, right, So
- 9:35Speaker 1: if Emmitt Finny is that guy that year, then potentially
- 9:37Speaker 1: that's good for him, and I mean for Detroit it's
- 9:39Speaker 1: been long time running right now. So with Detroit sometimes
- 9:42Speaker 1: it's like we need expectations of doing well. And then
- 9:45Speaker 1: with the team on the other stuff like Vegas, you go, well,
- 9:48Speaker 1: we're expecting to be good, as you and I boasted
- 9:49Speaker 1: off the top. This is the team that we're absolutely
- 9:51Speaker 1: expecting to win the division, run away with it. This
- 9:54Speaker 1: is a story in its own right. They beat Carolina
- 9:56Speaker 1: four to one, which is a major statement win. Michael
- 9:59Speaker 1: has a late leading sixteen points in the season. You
- 10:01Speaker 1: flick the season just started. This guy's already wracked up
- 10:03Speaker 1: sixteen points. Dorotheev scored type for the league. He's got
- 10:06Speaker 1: seven goals. Mark stones out week to week, Aiden Hill
- 10:09Speaker 1: goes down a Kira Schmid finishes in net. Would you
- 10:12Speaker 1: agree to j D Vegas Carolina? I know it was
- 10:15Speaker 1: on pay for the top two teams, but I mean
- 10:17Speaker 1: the two hottest teams right now in hockey. Pretty impressive.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I'd say, you know, Carolina and them, And then listen,
- 10:24Speaker 3: let's not forget the old dirty New Jersey Devils. Right
- 10:27Speaker 3: now they look pretty fantastical. But to your point, I
- 10:31Speaker 3: do believe, you know, if I were to pick throughout
- 10:34Speaker 3: you know, the Atlantic, I don't really have any teams
- 10:36Speaker 3: in the top, but I would go right now Carolina, Vegas,
- 10:40Speaker 3: Colorado and call with Colorado potentially being at the top
- 10:45Speaker 3: of that list. They did lose a heartbreaker to Utah.
- 10:48Speaker 3: But yeah, this was a good matchup, and I think Vegas.
- 10:52Speaker 3: The one thing with Vegas, you know, we have them
- 10:54Speaker 3: all running away with the Pacific if they can stay healthy.
- 10:57Speaker 3: You know, now Mark Stone's out a little bit, they
- 11:00Speaker 3: lose Aiden Hill, we could be seeing a Mista Kata,
- 11:03Speaker 3: a Mista Kata heart potentially sliding in because it looked
- 11:07Speaker 3: this is like the second time the season where Aiden
- 11:09Speaker 3: Hill went down in a heap and injured. And I
- 11:12Speaker 3: don't know if Akira Schmidt's enough to really keep them
- 11:16Speaker 3: at the top of this leaderboard. But the Pacific I
- 11:18Speaker 3: think is absolute junk. You know, other other than Vegas,
- 11:23Speaker 3: it just hasn't been good. You know, I just think
- 11:26Speaker 3: there's not enough there to kind of knock them off
- 11:28Speaker 3: the top. But yeah, they played it. It was a
- 11:30Speaker 3: hell of a game for Vegas. Carolina I think has
- 11:34Speaker 3: played well and that was their first kind of you
- 11:36Speaker 3: saw them kind of a little bit of chink in
- 11:38Speaker 3: the armor. But to their credit, no, Jacob Slavin have
- 11:43Speaker 3: some injuries right now, they're kind of they're a little
- 11:45Speaker 3: banged up. Shane Gosseisberg was out of the lineup if
- 11:47Speaker 3: I'm correct too, So they're missing some guys and they
- 11:52Speaker 3: both need to kind of stay healthy because even though
- 11:55Speaker 3: they had really hot starts, it's it's it's a fickle
- 11:59Speaker 3: thing being at the top of the the top of
- 12:01Speaker 3: the mountain.
- 12:02Speaker 1: As they say, uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Oh fickle df protest too much.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I like it on the way did he drop it?
- 12:10Speaker 2: Thank you, appreciate you.
- 12:12Speaker 1: How about this Brad Marshan, He's a guy who's polarizing
- 12:16Speaker 1: and I was just watching the highlights together of the day,
- 12:17Speaker 1: like when he got emotional, like I get emotional when
- 12:19Speaker 1: guys get choked up. Early Duke, I'm like, you know
- 12:21Speaker 1: what this shows you how much you love the game,
- 12:22Speaker 1: which you love the fans and even though he may
- 12:24Speaker 1: have this image of himself, he really does love the
- 12:26Speaker 1: game of hockey. Was really appreciati that the fans are
- 12:28Speaker 1: in Boston, rewarding him like that, having said that this
- 12:31Speaker 1: guy is such a punk. I was like, dude, he
- 12:35Speaker 1: was like what he did? Like I hadn't seen it yet,
- 12:37Speaker 1: And then I think Thomas Saku was telling me. He's like, hey, Sol,
- 12:39Speaker 1: guy's helmety, what are you talking? There was a scrum.
- 12:42Speaker 1: He took the fucking helmet and he started tearing it
- 12:44Speaker 1: a pregg you can't do that, Like, what's wrong with you?
- 12:46Speaker 2: Like, yes, he can.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I go this is unbelievable. So if you haven't seen it,
- 12:50Speaker 1: I mean, look it up, but I'll try to describe it.
- 12:52Speaker 1: He was fined five thousand dollars on sports like contact
- 12:54Speaker 1: little do we even call it? Dust up? He just,
- 12:56Speaker 1: you know, barking their last mistallean. He takes his helmet,
- 13:00Speaker 1: took it to the penalty box, starts taking out piece
- 13:02Speaker 1: by piece. It's kind of stripping out the lace a
- 13:04Speaker 1: little bit. Eventually ourf feree comes over and he's like,
- 13:06Speaker 1: can we get that back? These are the infractions. Dad
- 13:09Speaker 1: reportedly licked Ryan Callahan's face, grabbed Nick Cousins by the
- 13:12Speaker 1: throat of this bare hand, did Econor McGregor shelley with
- 13:15Speaker 1: a UFC champ of the building repeatedly jabbing Daniel Cidin
- 13:18Speaker 1: in the face after the whistle doing the twenty eleven Finals.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Amused by it, entertained by it, sick of it all
- 13:24Speaker 1: the above, I.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Would say you are yeah.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I mean, as a player, you kind of get that
- 13:31Speaker 3: feeling of like, you know, the blood starts boiling.
- 13:34Speaker 2: But it's so funny.
- 13:35Speaker 3: I mean, he goes in there and he just rips
- 13:36Speaker 3: apart Dollan's helmet like poor equipment co the poor and
- 13:41Speaker 3: look people will be like, ah, I rip this helmet apart.
- 13:44Speaker 3: I'm like they got extras in the back. They're basically
- 13:45Speaker 3: just gonna give them a new helmet. But that helmet
- 13:47Speaker 3: might not fit the way this one fits. So that's
- 13:49Speaker 3: where it's like kind of funny. Like it's not like
- 13:51Speaker 3: he's you know, breaking his skates or anything like that,
- 13:53Speaker 3: but yeah, he is so polarizing and then you see that,
- 13:57Speaker 3: you see that emotionality from him, and you're kind of
- 13:59Speaker 3: like it's one of those things when you see those
- 14:02Speaker 3: people and you're like fuck, You're like no, I can't,
- 14:06Speaker 3: you know what I mean, because like it makes you
- 14:07Speaker 3: choked up as well, because you know, we're all we're
- 14:09Speaker 3: all suckers for those moments and all of the ship
- 14:12Speaker 3: he's done in his career and all of the mess,
- 14:14Speaker 3: and you just look at he's crying and you're just
- 14:16Speaker 3: like that's a touching moment. That's like nice. Oh maybe
- 14:20Speaker 3: he is a good guy. You know, maybe he's a
- 14:22Speaker 3: good guy. Maybe isn't a piece of shit. But it's
- 14:24Speaker 3: like that's just that's sports for you, like you want
- 14:28Speaker 3: to you know, I'm sure there's still some fans that were.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Like, oh, fuck this guy.
- 14:32Speaker 3: But it's like, listen, the guy is a competitor. He's
- 14:35Speaker 3: a rat. He makes no he does not hide it
- 14:38Speaker 3: one bit. It's not like he's he's a guy being
- 14:41Speaker 3: like I'm the good guy. He plays the villain. Well,
- 14:43Speaker 3: he's on the team that is the most villainous team
- 14:46Speaker 3: around and yeah, I think, but he still loved anywhere.
- 14:50Speaker 3: He plays one of those guys you want on your team,
- 14:52Speaker 3: you wanted your organization and and uh, you know, all
- 14:56Speaker 3: big nos aside and and and jokes aside, Big Nose Club.
- 15:00Speaker 3: We are the coalition of the Big Nose Club as well,
- 15:02Speaker 3: so the nose goes. But yeah, he's I mean, what
- 15:06Speaker 3: a player. And you saw him The response they got
- 15:09Speaker 3: from Boston. He's the captain, he was the guy there
- 15:13Speaker 3: for for quite a long time.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Yeah, he's definitely a guy who want my team. To
- 15:16Speaker 1: your point, he's gonna compete, he's in a fight and
- 15:18Speaker 1: from teammates. Has always been a guy. He's always been
- 15:20Speaker 1: well respected, well like despite the antics, let's talk Leafs
- 15:23Speaker 1: right now. Anthony Stillarts criticizing his team falling a four
- 15:26Speaker 1: to three loss. Still Arts frustrated by some liberties taking
- 15:29Speaker 1: by cracking players in the crease and said, we're six
- 15:32Speaker 1: games into the season. Enough is enough. We kind of
- 15:34Speaker 1: got to start picking it up here. Of course, Torontomy
- 15:37Speaker 1: he had jumped all over the comment. He clarified his
- 15:38Speaker 1: comments a couple of days later. William Neelander, Brandon Carlo,
- 15:41Speaker 1: and coach Rap Ruby all stood by their goalie, but
- 15:44Speaker 1: but Ruby also criticizing his team. Kind of like the Oilers, JDI.
- 15:47Speaker 1: They were a five hundred team. They're just three three
- 15:48Speaker 1: and one. They lost the Devils. Do we agree or
- 15:50Speaker 1: a good team Devils or five?
- 15:52Speaker 3: They got beat by the Devils. They had to lose
- 15:54Speaker 3: to the Devils. They got beat by the Devil.
- 15:56Speaker 1: What do you make of this Leafs team? Right now.
- 15:57Speaker 1: They lose five too. They're just not looking great so far.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Yeah, they're you know, once again, I think we we
- 16:04Speaker 3: may be right on this depending on how the season
- 16:07Speaker 3: chicks up. But we said this isn't necessarily the team
- 16:11Speaker 3: that the Toronto Apo leaps team that's going to be
- 16:13Speaker 3: great in the season. This is a team that they
- 16:16Speaker 3: just want to get to the playoffs and lean on
- 16:18Speaker 3: teams in over a seven game series. This team will
- 16:20Speaker 3: beat you, you know, New Jersey, that kind of makeup.
- 16:23Speaker 2: That's more of the season.
- 16:24Speaker 3: They're just not the team that they were, This high flying,
- 16:26Speaker 3: high flutant team. But you know, the life without Marner.
- 16:30Speaker 3: I think he's going to take some adjusting, you know,
- 16:32Speaker 3: you neique guys to step up. I think Austin hasn't
- 16:34Speaker 3: really found his groove yet. He's he still got four
- 16:36Speaker 3: goals to assist, but hasn't found his groove without Matthews.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I Brube came out with some comments about kind of
- 16:42Speaker 3: him getting sick of the top line. It's been Matthews
- 16:45Speaker 3: and Nis pretty firm, but like that third, that winger
- 16:48Speaker 3: has been just an absolute just a revolving door of
- 16:53Speaker 3: players and it just does nothing. Seems to work. They
- 16:56Speaker 3: tried Mitchelli, they tried Domey. So I mean when you
- 16:59Speaker 3: look at that, you're like, well, there's probably a trade
- 17:01Speaker 3: out there where they can maybe bring in somebody, you know,
- 17:03Speaker 3: maybe Mitch. You know, he's out there, he's available.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Mitchie comes home, Mittie comes home twelve and a half.
- 17:10Speaker 3: No, I think you know, they might need to find
- 17:12Speaker 3: somebody or somebody's gonna have to step up. I mean,
- 17:14Speaker 3: what a what a what a great role too if
- 17:18Speaker 3: you're a player on that team to kind of push
- 17:19Speaker 3: for it. You know, this is you get to play
- 17:21Speaker 3: with Matthews and I So I'd like to see maybe
- 17:24Speaker 3: Calli yarncrock up there. He's kind of had a decent
- 17:26Speaker 3: start to the season. And you know, other than that,
- 17:29Speaker 3: maybe Dakota Joshua making it maybe make it a really
- 17:32Speaker 3: heavy line.
- 17:33Speaker 2: But it's tough.
- 17:34Speaker 3: They don't have they don't they're missing that piece obviously
- 17:37Speaker 3: with Marner leaving, and it's hard to replace that.
- 17:39Speaker 2: So you try to replace it in the way you play.
- 17:41Speaker 3: As the team, and they've just been up and down
- 17:44Speaker 3: and going to Stillars's comments, I mean, keep that ship
- 17:48Speaker 3: in the room, Like I'm just not a I'm not
- 17:50Speaker 3: a fan of that keep that.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Ship in the room.
- 17:52Speaker 3: But but he we obviously knew who he was calling out.
- 17:55Speaker 3: He was calling out Nilander on that play like it
- 17:58Speaker 3: was a pretty.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I was gonna see what I was stop as now
- 18:00Speaker 1: was especially when the goldie calls him out, like to me,
- 18:03Speaker 1: I wish look at teams as your leader. And I
- 18:05Speaker 1: was talking Mike Johnson time. So you know, it's rare
- 18:07Speaker 1: when the goalie is actually like the verbal leader. Can
- 18:10Speaker 1: you give me an example when he's like, like I go,
- 18:12Speaker 1: like Patrick Wall was fiery, He's again maybe Wall a
- 18:14Speaker 1: little bit, but bernerv was never the leader of these
- 18:15Speaker 1: devil's teams, right, Staneko, It's other guys, Scott Stevens, you see,
- 18:18Speaker 1: the one was Sean Brooke. Sean Brook was like a
- 18:20Speaker 1: very verbal guy. He was a very vocal leader among goalies. Goalies, right,
- 18:24Speaker 1: are not the guys who were in the room and
- 18:25Speaker 1: shouting yelly. So whatever a goalie chirps, I'm like, dude,
- 18:28Speaker 1: you better be at the elite level. It's just it
- 18:30Speaker 1: was so unusual for a goalie to be critical like that.
- 18:32Speaker 3: He's been good too, so it's hard to come after him.
- 18:36Speaker 3: And he wasn't wrong. He was warranted. But it's one
- 18:38Speaker 3: of those you know, you're you know that's going to happen.
- 18:41Speaker 3: You're emotional. If the game finishes, he's probably pissed off,
- 18:44Speaker 3: probably broke his stick. Come into the room, the media
- 18:47Speaker 3: throws a camera in your face and says, talk to
- 18:49Speaker 3: me about that goal. You're kind of like, well, the
- 18:51Speaker 3: the fuck do you?
- 18:52Speaker 2: What do you think? Look at the look at the play.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Somebody got blown blown by it was a breakaway and
- 18:58Speaker 3: he didn't make the same. So I think it was
- 19:00Speaker 3: a level of frustration. I think that's just Toronto for you.
- 19:04Speaker 3: It's you know, there's it's never a dull moment. It's
- 19:07Speaker 3: you'd think that they'd be the Broadway, the New York,
- 19:10Speaker 3: the drama. The drama would would be in New York
- 19:13Speaker 3: and not there. And even though there is some drama
- 19:15Speaker 3: New York, I mean, it always seems to fall more
- 19:17Speaker 3: in Toronto. It's just an it's just a circus there
- 19:19Speaker 3: right now. And it's just you know that you knew
- 19:22Speaker 3: that the Marner leaving would it was one of those
- 19:24Speaker 3: things if you signed Marner, you're there's talk about Marner
- 19:28Speaker 3: there all year, and they probably overpaid him, and then
- 19:30Speaker 3: he leaves, and now everybody goes, why do we leave
- 19:32Speaker 3: a hundred point player leave? And it's like they're gonna
- 19:34Speaker 3: just have to figure out their identity and keep kind
- 19:36Speaker 3: of staying with it. And I still think I'm still
- 19:40Speaker 3: I still believe in this team, that this is a
- 19:42Speaker 3: team that could go could go far in the playoffs,
- 19:45Speaker 3: and I think they're more better built for the playoffs
- 19:47Speaker 3: and there for the season.
- 19:49Speaker 1: So hopefully nothing too much story about they're in Leafland.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Your favorite quote of the week. San Jose Sharks the
- 19:54Speaker 1: NHL's only winless team. But why Ryan Warsovski is keeping
- 19:58Speaker 1: a sense of humor or maybe just being honest? Let
- 20:01Speaker 1: it fly started, I'd saying, I give up one of
- 20:03Speaker 1: my kids for a fucking win. We're assuming he's joking.
- 20:06Speaker 1: We did later apologize. It always takes you thinks about
- 20:08Speaker 1: when coaches make these comments. You know, Brad Oustmas, who's
- 20:11Speaker 1: a Yankees coach years ago, is managing the Tigers. This
- 20:13Speaker 1: is early in his tenure and we're Safti's still a
- 20:16Speaker 1: young coach. Somebody asked me, how bad is the loss?
- 20:17Speaker 1: What are you gonna do after a loss of this?
- 20:18Speaker 1: He goes, I'm gonna go home and beat my wife.
- 20:21Speaker 1: It was such a circus. After he's like come, he's like,
- 20:24Speaker 1: I don't beat my wife. There was like women like,
- 20:26Speaker 1: you know, picketing outside the Tigers games. He did like
- 20:28Speaker 1: donate money to domestic abuse. I'm like, you have to
- 20:31Speaker 1: be careful about you say, and clearly why Marsaci's wife
- 20:34Speaker 1: didn't appreciate his comment.
- 20:36Speaker 3: I'm sure he got home and his wife absolutely whooped
- 20:41Speaker 3: the shit out of him because you know, you know,
- 20:43Speaker 3: he knew which kid it was as well, because you
- 20:46Speaker 3: all have your favorites as a dad, so he knew
- 20:49Speaker 3: the kid that was getting getting sacrificed like a lamb.
- 20:53Speaker 3: But I mean, can you just imagine him walking in
- 20:55Speaker 3: and the wife just being like, are you fucking kidding me?
- 20:59Speaker 3: But I was on air with Bruce Breudo and you know,
- 21:04Speaker 3: we were we weren't on air, and he kind of
- 21:05Speaker 3: said something similar where we were watching something and we
- 21:08Speaker 3: were watching one of the games and it wasn't going good,
- 21:10Speaker 3: and he's like, oh, He's like, can you imagine He's like,
- 21:13Speaker 3: you're just sitting here and you you know, give up
- 21:15Speaker 3: that goal and he's like, then you go home. And
- 21:17Speaker 3: just take it on. Your wife beat the shit out
- 21:20Speaker 3: of our We're like, what, Bruce, you now, I don't
- 21:23Speaker 3: actually mean that. I'm just saying you can imagine boil
- 21:26Speaker 3: over like Bruce Jesus man. But in all in good jess.
- 21:33Speaker 3: He then he then walked it back and said his
- 21:36Speaker 3: wife would beat him so so then ended up becoming
- 21:39Speaker 3: funny as well. But but yeah, I mean, this Shark's
- 21:42Speaker 3: team is it's not good right now. You know, they
- 21:45Speaker 3: drop a game on the island. Schaeffer has two points.
- 21:49Speaker 3: You know, they look they kind of got beat. Ask
- 21:52Speaker 3: Groff hasn't been great to start the season. They thought
- 21:54Speaker 3: he would kind of take the net. It's not pretty
- 21:57Speaker 3: in Shark'sland right now whatsoever.
- 22:00Speaker 2: So it's it's tough. I think they're one of them.
- 22:02Speaker 3: They're the only team in franchise history to lose their
- 22:05Speaker 3: first five games four years straight. So they haven't won
- 22:09Speaker 3: a game in the last four years in TYW. You
- 22:12Speaker 3: can check this up on me if you want, but
- 22:15Speaker 3: the last four years and now they're down to I
- 22:17Speaker 3: think they're to six now five or six. But the
- 22:20Speaker 3: first five games they've lost the past four years, so
- 22:23Speaker 3: that's not pretty out there.
- 22:26Speaker 5: No.
- 22:26Speaker 1: But speaking of pretty, one more top before we get
- 22:28Speaker 1: to our buddy, Gabe Polski Shaeffer one goal, one assist
- 22:32Speaker 1: last night, second in defenseman points. My man is eighteen
- 22:35Speaker 1: years old and no greater authority than his head coach
- 22:38Speaker 1: Patrick Waugh is even impressed by what Shaffer is doing
- 22:40Speaker 1: right now on Long Island. Amazing.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think we kind of set it
- 22:46Speaker 3: to like, hey, don't compare me to kill mccarr. But
- 22:48Speaker 3: this kid is definitely his own version of just a
- 22:52Speaker 3: stud defenseman. And I watched that game yesterday too, and yeah,
- 22:57Speaker 3: he's he's fun to watch man. He's effortless when he skates,
- 23:00Speaker 3: he seems excited, loves the game, plays a great two
- 23:03Speaker 3: hundred foot game. He plays PK plays power plays, been
- 23:06Speaker 3: the top power play unit. So you know you're getting
- 23:09Speaker 3: some points that way as this, you know you're getting
- 23:11Speaker 3: those second apples. But I mean, he gets up in
- 23:14Speaker 3: the rush so quickly, he stays up in the rush.
- 23:16Speaker 3: He stays in front of the net. That goalie scored,
- 23:18Speaker 3: he was on the he was on the post, and
- 23:21Speaker 3: he was the first guy at the net. And basically
- 23:25Speaker 3: Douclaire gets that puck tries to shoot it, wraps it
- 23:27Speaker 3: around and he stays at the net. Most most dee
- 23:30Speaker 3: will vacate, but you know, because they're nervous and you're
- 23:33Speaker 3: you're kind of trained as a defenseman to get back
- 23:35Speaker 3: on the d side of the puck. So you know,
- 23:37Speaker 3: very I mean, it's just such a good kid to
- 23:40Speaker 3: root for. Man, you just you love it. Everybody's you know,
- 23:43Speaker 3: I said it on the last pot and and you know,
- 23:48Speaker 3: like I feel like the energy and the positive vibes
- 23:50Speaker 3: that every single human being that watches Hockey's throwing towards
- 23:53Speaker 3: him is also propelling him and making him even It's
- 23:56Speaker 3: just like he looks like he's floating out there and
- 23:58Speaker 3: having a fun time. And you know, obviously he's going
- 24:00Speaker 3: to encounter some adversity. That's it's not going to be
- 24:03Speaker 3: like this his whole career, but for right now the start,
- 24:06Speaker 3: he's having a young kid eighteen on this Islanders team
- 24:08Speaker 3: and willing them to wins. They're now five hundred. It's great, man,
- 24:12Speaker 3: It's an awesome.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Story, no doubt about it. Easy got to root for.
- 24:15Speaker 1: As you said, good news there in Long Island Ubs Arena,
- 24:18Speaker 1: as Matthew Schaeffer has been one of the best defensemen
- 24:20Speaker 1: in hockey, early favorite for the Calder when we come
- 24:22Speaker 1: back here in NHL unscripted Gabe Polski. That's right, former
- 24:26Speaker 1: college player at Yale. He's got stories about Tim Taylor,
- 24:30Speaker 1: or does he also stories from Beer League Hockey filmmaker
- 24:34Speaker 1: behind Red Army in Search of Greatness in his new film,
- 24:36Speaker 1: which has joined comparisons of Werner Herzog, plus what's it
- 24:39Speaker 1: like to work with Nicholas Cage? Why I had a
- 24:41Speaker 1: slightly antagonistic relationship with his leading man? The Man who
- 24:44Speaker 1: Saved the World name of his film. We're talking to
- 24:46Speaker 1: Gabe Polski after this. Our next guest is an accomplished
- 25:01Speaker 1: director and producers. Films include Red Army in Search of Greatness,
- 25:05Speaker 1: Red Penguins, and Butcher's Crossing. His latest is The Man
- 25:08Speaker 1: Who Saved the World. It premieres this month, is being
- 25:11Speaker 1: hailed as one of those innovative and compelling films of
- 25:14Speaker 1: the year. It is Gabe Polsky. Gabe, great to see
- 25:17Speaker 1: you again, man.
- 25:17Speaker 5: How you doing you too? You too? I'm doing well.
- 25:22Speaker 1: That's been the same in Portland right now? Keeping it weird.
- 25:24Speaker 1: You're all over the place. Obviously, I've talked to you
- 25:27Speaker 1: twice in the past about Red Army and about In
- 25:29Speaker 1: Search of Greatness. We'll get your new film in just
- 25:32Speaker 1: a second. But Red Army, there's a connection because our
- 25:34Speaker 1: friend Tal Pinchowski wrote a terrific book about all those
- 25:37Speaker 1: players defecting in similar crossovers, particularly Slava Fatisov, who was
- 25:41Speaker 1: so well illustrated in your film and well depicted in
- 25:44Speaker 1: Tallas book. You know, you made waves with Red Army,
- 25:47Speaker 1: and I think people still talk about a great documentary
- 25:49Speaker 1: that was clearly your passion for hockey and as a
- 25:52Speaker 1: hockey player came through. But Fatisa up to me, is
- 25:54Speaker 1: still the guy. I want to talk about that last
- 25:56Speaker 1: shot where he gives you the finger. I mean, it
- 25:58Speaker 1: was so funny that you included that relationship you had
- 26:00Speaker 1: with him.
- 26:02Speaker 5: Yeah, I still kind of unpacking that really relationship. And
- 26:05Speaker 5: you know, every time I see him, which is not
- 26:09Speaker 5: often now obviously because he's in Russia and you know,
- 26:12Speaker 5: in the government there, and I haven't talked to him
- 26:14Speaker 5: for a while. But yeah, he's he's sort of a
- 26:17Speaker 5: weird guy. And I bet you most people that you
- 26:20Speaker 5: know met him have a hard time, you know, deciphering
- 26:26Speaker 5: the inner workings of his mind. He's a tough dude,
- 26:31Speaker 5: but he's also at the same time, you know, has
- 26:34Speaker 5: a really soft spot inside and it's kind of like
- 26:37Speaker 5: a bear and it is incredibly once you kind of
- 26:39Speaker 5: get in. He does have a kind of a big
- 26:42Speaker 5: warmth to him. You could you could see that a
- 26:44Speaker 5: bit in the film.
- 26:46Speaker 3: It is that something that was kind of surprising to
- 26:49Speaker 3: you kind of diving into both of these films. And
- 26:51Speaker 3: was there anything else that that shocked you throughout the
- 26:53Speaker 3: process that you didn't know beforehand.
- 26:57Speaker 5: About Red Army. Yeah, yeah, it's been a long time,
- 27:02Speaker 5: but yeah, I mean I think you know, meeting meeting
- 27:08Speaker 5: these guys and getting to know them and kind of
- 27:11Speaker 5: what they went through living in the Soviet Union and
- 27:15Speaker 5: how how they trained and the coaching and all that
- 27:19Speaker 5: was definitely eye opening. I knew a little bit, but
- 27:21Speaker 5: then you know all the all the little details about
- 27:25Speaker 5: living in the camp and on the army base, and
- 27:28Speaker 5: and also how the Soviet government was, you know, essentially
- 27:35Speaker 5: taking all their money. You know, if they wanted to
- 27:38Speaker 5: go to the NHL, they get like, you know, a
- 27:41Speaker 5: tiny amount of money and the rest of it's paid
- 27:43Speaker 5: to the Soviet you know, government and sort of how
- 27:46Speaker 5: they're trying to enslave them essentially. So it was it
- 27:51Speaker 5: was eye opening. But you know, the most things you
- 27:53Speaker 5: learn about these films is not necessarily facts, but like
- 27:57Speaker 5: really you start to absorb their character as people and
- 28:03Speaker 5: the extit tricities. You know that that's what I'm left
- 28:06Speaker 5: with more.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I mean, I played in the KHL three four years ago,
- 28:12Speaker 3: when you know, it's kind of changed, but we lived
- 28:16Speaker 3: in the barracks. I lived on the barracks, on the base,
- 28:19Speaker 3: the basa we called it, and I mean, it's it's
- 28:22Speaker 3: just so interesting the way they live and the way
- 28:24Speaker 3: they carry themselves on a day to day basis, even
- 28:27Speaker 3: just in that league. So it's like so eye opening
- 28:29Speaker 3: culturally to see that, and also you know, see that
- 28:36Speaker 3: it somehow works for them. You know, for me it
- 28:39Speaker 3: was a little bit different, but for them it worked
- 28:41Speaker 3: and some it didn't. But it was just so weird
- 28:44Speaker 3: and interesting in eye opening to see all that.
- 28:47Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's funny, you know, I know that on
- 28:51Speaker 5: a lot of other podcasts, you know, you know, there's
- 28:54Speaker 5: so many stories that come from that, especially kind of
- 28:57Speaker 5: when North American players go over there. It's just so
- 29:00Speaker 5: funny the culture shock. I haven't thought that. I was
- 29:02Speaker 5: actually thinking the other day that funny to do like
- 29:06Speaker 5: a slap shot kind of movie in.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Who Are the Handsome Brothers?
- 29:13Speaker 5: Right, yeah, exactly, like like it would be just a
- 29:16Speaker 5: hilarious comedy. And I'm like, man, maybe I should write
- 29:19Speaker 5: something like that, you know, like.
- 29:22Speaker 3: That would be interesting, Like, yeah, a slapshot style comedy
- 29:27Speaker 3: or like goon but about imports playing overseas.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, as I mentioned, Tal wrote the book
- 29:34Speaker 1: break Away from Behind the Iron Curtain, the NHL the
- 29:36Speaker 1: Untold Street Hockey's Great Escape. So Tal, go ahead. You
- 29:39Speaker 1: can bomb with Gabe right now for shared histories here.
- 29:41Speaker 6: Appreciate it. Thanks AV. Hey Gabe, I'm so excited. Hey, yeah, stoked.
- 29:46Speaker 6: I'm glad Gabe's here, very exciting. I actually want to
- 29:49Speaker 6: ask about someone else we both know, which is Howard
- 29:52Speaker 6: Baldwin or who is Howard Baldwin? And I'm so fascinated
- 29:56Speaker 6: by Red Tenguins, which is another great film you made
- 30:00Speaker 6: in the world of hockey, and you talked about this
- 30:02Speaker 6: strict centralized program in the Soviet Union, in Red Army,
- 30:06Speaker 6: in Red Penguins. It's the complete opposite, you.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Know, the.
- 30:10Speaker 6: Cold War ends and its absolute lawlessness in the former
- 30:14Speaker 6: Soviet Union, and you got a pretty unique look into
- 30:18Speaker 6: kind of how that functioned with Howard and the Penguins
- 30:21Speaker 6: when they bought a team, a Russian pro team, and
- 30:24Speaker 6: it was absolute chaos. I mean, what do you recall
- 30:26Speaker 6: about kind of about that time in Russia.
- 30:30Speaker 5: Yeah, so the Red Army. So the Pittsburgh Penguans bought
- 30:33Speaker 5: the Red Army team, you know, that same team that
- 30:36Speaker 5: was featured in Red Army, Red Army. So you know
- 30:40Speaker 5: that that's in itself as a just incredible because it
- 30:43Speaker 5: was the national team and it's just insane. You know
- 30:46Speaker 5: that everything was for sale. But what I vowed to
- 30:49Speaker 5: myself after Red Army that I'll never tell a story
- 30:52Speaker 5: in russ are even really hockey, because I felt like,
- 30:56Speaker 5: you know, that's enough. You know, I did a lot there. Anyways,
- 31:00Speaker 5: then this story came along, which I resisted for a
- 31:03Speaker 5: long time him and but what I felt about this
- 31:07Speaker 5: story read Penguins, was that I could tell kind of
- 31:11Speaker 5: a comedy, like in a way, it was like a
- 31:14Speaker 5: dark Cone Brothers comedy about mafia and gangsters. You know
- 31:18Speaker 5: how how strange and crazy life was, and that when
- 31:22Speaker 5: the Soviet Union collapsed right at that period, and so
- 31:26Speaker 5: it was just a real crazy story that got really dangerous.
- 31:33Speaker 5: And you had this central character Steve Warshaw, who Howard Baldwin,
- 31:36Speaker 5: who himself was sort of this eccentric, you know, hockey
- 31:40Speaker 5: owner of the Penguins and before that, the Hartford Whalers.
- 31:45Speaker 5: He hired this guy, Steve Warshaw, who was a you know,
- 31:49Speaker 5: almost like a Ben Stiller character, to go over and
- 31:51Speaker 5: run in Russia, to Russia to run this team, the
- 31:54Speaker 5: Red Army team with Victor Tikinoff the coach, who's this
- 31:57Speaker 5: sort of Nazisque character, and it just it it was
- 32:04Speaker 5: just a clash of cultures and complete insanity.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Uh.
- 32:08Speaker 5: And so the movie I had a lot of fun with.
- 32:10Speaker 5: I mean, there was dangerous points when I was in
- 32:14Speaker 5: Moscow and you know, getting chased around, I don't know
- 32:18Speaker 5: by people KGB or whatever. Like you know, we were
- 32:22Speaker 5: stopped a couple of times shooting and I was happy
- 32:25Speaker 5: to kind of get out of there safely. But it
- 32:29Speaker 5: was it was an incredible story, and yeah, that was
- 32:34Speaker 5: that was interesting to do.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Did a fantastic job with Searts of Greatness and my
- 32:40Speaker 1: buddy Ben Lyons, of course, is involved in producing it.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Ben's like, you gotta have gay bonds and a file
- 32:44Speaker 1: talking about I remember Jerry Rice actually called me like
- 32:47Speaker 1: direct cell, and I remember getting voice was, Hey, it's
- 32:49Speaker 1: Jerry Rice, call me back. So I hope he sells
- 32:51Speaker 1: the same number, so I hope that I can call him.
- 32:53Speaker 1: But you talked to Jerry Rice, Pale, and of course
- 32:56Speaker 1: Gretzky and of the three game but all three are excellent.
- 32:58Speaker 1: But I thought Gretzky was particularly illuminating because he came across,
- 33:02Speaker 1: as you know, insightful, but also j only modest, and
- 33:05Speaker 1: I loved at the end when you're asking him just
- 33:07Speaker 1: literally wrapping up the whole concept of greatness and getting there,
- 33:09Speaker 1: and he kind of just gives a shrug. He's like, yeah,
- 33:11Speaker 1: a little luck along the way too. I guess, like,
- 33:14Speaker 1: like how cool is it? Like of all these great players,
- 33:16Speaker 1: Wayne seems to have the genuine humility to him.
- 33:20Speaker 5: Yeah. He he's an interesting guy. I mean, I I
- 33:25Speaker 5: love him, and I'm so thankful that he agreed to
- 33:27Speaker 5: do the film. He he he's always sort of humble
- 33:32Speaker 5: like that, and he's he I think he really liked
- 33:38Speaker 5: the film and what he was trying to do because
- 33:40Speaker 5: I I remember after he did the film, he went
- 33:43Speaker 5: on like you know, masterclass and started telling the same
- 33:46Speaker 5: stories and then he went on, you know, he would
- 33:50Speaker 5: just go on and talk about the similar stories that
- 33:53Speaker 5: he told and in search of greatness. And so I
- 33:57Speaker 5: take that as a compliment, you know, but yeah, it
- 34:01Speaker 5: was it was. It was you know, obviously because I
- 34:04Speaker 5: in hockey in college. So to be able to do
- 34:07Speaker 5: that and to build to me, it was like a
- 34:09Speaker 5: mic drop about everything that I really thought about sports
- 34:14Speaker 5: and about what I felt about sports and what was
- 34:22Speaker 5: wrong with with it, with particularly coaching and you know,
- 34:28Speaker 5: the creative aspect of sports. I was finally able to
- 34:31Speaker 5: kind of express that all all that I believed, you know,
- 34:35Speaker 5: and so to have Gretzky to kind of narrated or
- 34:40Speaker 5: tell those points that that I'd been thinking my whole
- 34:43Speaker 5: life was great because you know, no one's gonna really
- 34:47Speaker 5: care about what I say. They care about what the
- 34:50Speaker 5: greatest of all times saying. So it's just like, you know,
- 34:54Speaker 5: it just felt amazing.
- 34:56Speaker 3: Is is there anything specific from that that maybe changed
- 34:59Speaker 3: your perception of it or like maybe strengthened your resolve
- 35:05Speaker 3: in what you believe the kind of the search for
- 35:07Speaker 3: greatness is just talking and learning from those guys.
- 35:11Speaker 5: I think just that these guys and you guys, it's
- 35:14Speaker 5: still people don't like to say it because it might
- 35:17Speaker 5: sound corny for the athletes, but that it's really all
- 35:20Speaker 5: about creativity. You know, greatness is all about creativity because
- 35:27Speaker 5: you see it over and over even with Tom Brady,
- 35:30Speaker 5: with all these guys who just don't fit the conventional mold,
- 35:34Speaker 5: and so they figure out, you know, they're not faster
- 35:39Speaker 5: or stronger this and that, like Messi who is shorter,
- 35:42Speaker 5: they figure out another style on how to change the
- 35:47Speaker 5: game and they sort of take it to another level
- 35:50Speaker 5: because of that and that weakness that they had, you know,
- 35:55Speaker 5: And so I always felt, yeah, exactly like you take
- 36:00Speaker 5: that weakness that you have and you sort of lean
- 36:03Speaker 5: into it and figure out how to how to use
- 36:06Speaker 5: that uniqueness, that sacred uniqueness to to to change the
- 36:11Speaker 5: game instead of trying to be like everybody else. And
- 36:15Speaker 5: you know the problem is that a lot of the
- 36:17Speaker 5: coaches they say, oh no, no, no, he's not fast enough,
- 36:19Speaker 5: he's not this, but they're not really seeing yeah, a
- 36:22Speaker 5: player holistically.
- 36:24Speaker 3: You know, that's an interesting take on it because my
- 36:27Speaker 3: dad was a lot like that of like, you know,
- 36:30Speaker 3: finding out what you do well, or like finding out
- 36:33Speaker 3: a way to stand out and being creative with those
- 36:35Speaker 3: ways of like feeling out a game, feeling out the
- 36:38Speaker 3: process of a game, and understanding like hey, if you're
- 36:41Speaker 3: not a top end guy or you don't have that
- 36:44Speaker 3: you know, natural natural ability to find ways to be
- 36:48Speaker 3: creative in in standing out and being unique.
- 36:51Speaker 2: So that's an interesting take.
- 36:52Speaker 3: I haven't anybody seen anybody frame it like that, so
- 36:54Speaker 3: that's pretty cool.
- 36:55Speaker 5: But scoring goals has nothing to do with strength or
- 36:58Speaker 5: speed or it's all about understanding the game. And Tom Brady,
- 37:02Speaker 5: I mean, just as an example, he just understood the
- 37:06Speaker 5: game better. He didn't need to move faster. He knew
- 37:09Speaker 5: the game better, you know what I'm saying. He was
- 37:11Speaker 5: moving in his mind ten times faster than everybody else.
- 37:13Speaker 5: Same with Gretzky. You know, it's great when you can
- 37:17Speaker 5: combine that skill like Jordan. Jordan is a great example
- 37:23Speaker 5: of a guy who just had a you know, incredible abilities,
- 37:28Speaker 5: you know, and and then also he understood the game
- 37:30Speaker 5: and you.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Know, yeah, and a massive you're gonna go along with it.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Two we're right now. But yeah, we know I'm not
- 37:38Speaker 1: a big Jordan guy. We know you played Division one
- 37:40Speaker 1: hockeyt Yale under Tim Taylor. I want some of your
- 37:42Speaker 1: favorite memories playing pucks at Yale for the Bulldogs.
- 37:47Speaker 5: Well, my favorite favorite memories are are not Tim Taylor.
- 37:51Speaker 5: I'll tell you.
- 37:52Speaker 2: That that's.
- 37:55Speaker 5: The absolute worst part of playing there by a thousand.
- 38:01Speaker 5: But but playing with at the Yale Whale and and
- 38:07Speaker 5: with my teammates was you know, unbelievable. You know, I
- 38:13Speaker 5: just love being I just loved playing in games. I
- 38:18Speaker 5: know it sounds corny, but it just it felt like
- 38:22Speaker 5: freedom and and and just like I was at home,
- 38:26Speaker 5: you know, when I was just on the ice, and
- 38:28Speaker 5: when when you have the puck, you know you can
- 38:32Speaker 5: do anything with it. You know, you know you have
- 38:35Speaker 5: the puck, so what are you going to do with it?
- 38:37Speaker 5: I just love that feeling that that you can make
- 38:40Speaker 5: anything happen.
- 38:43Speaker 2: It is It is a nice sense of freedom to
- 38:45Speaker 2: have that.
- 38:46Speaker 3: And uh, did your when did your are you still playing?
- 38:50Speaker 3: Did your are you still skating or or enjoying beer
- 38:53Speaker 3: League or anything like that now?
- 38:55Speaker 5: The last time I played, and it's not I mean
- 38:58Speaker 5: I definitely would would do it. But I I went
- 39:00Speaker 5: to I was in a beer League game and and
- 39:03Speaker 5: the players weren't very good. I was just doing all
- 39:06Speaker 5: those friends invited me and I a guy literally he
- 39:09Speaker 5: was on cocaine or something, but he he checked me
- 39:14Speaker 5: straight from behind, like a like a one eighty. So
- 39:16Speaker 5: you can't really look this way or that way. Was
- 39:19Speaker 5: that one spot that blind spot right behind me? Yeah,
- 39:22Speaker 5: checked me from behind, and I, because I didn't have
- 39:24Speaker 5: my equipment really secured because it's beer League or just
- 39:28Speaker 5: like whatever, my kneepad slipped and I cracked my knee
- 39:32Speaker 5: in half.
- 39:33Speaker 2: No.
- 39:34Speaker 5: Yeah, vertical horizontal, horizonal.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Horizontal two on top of that.
- 39:40Speaker 5: That's brutal and so uh yeah, that was the last
- 39:43Speaker 5: time I've played, But I would play. I would do
- 39:47Speaker 5: it again. I mean just you know, but I haven't.
- 39:50Speaker 5: I haven't really played.
- 39:51Speaker 1: What have a terrible way if you have your career
- 39:53Speaker 1: end beerly cockey from a guy.
- 39:55Speaker 5: On burle career. Yeah, no, no, that that's what I said.
- 39:59Speaker 5: I'm not done. I'm not going to end it that way.
- 40:02Speaker 5: I'm going to go again some other time.
- 40:06Speaker 1: On the subject of legends, you directed Nicholas Cage in
- 40:09Speaker 1: Butcher's crossing. What's the fondest memory you have a work
- 40:13Speaker 1: with Nick Cage?
- 40:15Speaker 5: Wow, that guy is really interesting.
- 40:20Speaker 3: I can imagine and he I mean I almost like
- 40:25Speaker 3: blacked it out, but he Well, first of all, the
- 40:28Speaker 3: film was so difficult to shoot.
- 40:29Speaker 5: We like shot it in eighteen days and it was
- 40:33Speaker 5: all over Montana. Was like such a complicated shoot. So
- 40:36Speaker 5: I was just like, I was just like, I don't
- 40:40Speaker 5: know if you guys ever have gotten this way, but
- 40:42Speaker 5: you're like in survival mode and you're just literally like
- 40:48Speaker 5: trying to focus. You're not thinking about anything else but
- 40:52Speaker 5: just execution and nothing else, you know what I'm saying.
- 40:54Speaker 5: And so like all these problems, thousands of them, and
- 40:57Speaker 5: then meanwhile Nick Cage is like losing his mind, you know,
- 41:01Speaker 5: on the shoot, and I'm just like total zen, like
- 41:05Speaker 5: you know, like you just have to get through it
- 41:07Speaker 5: no matter what. He was playing a character Miller who
- 41:10Speaker 5: was like really intense. Well he always you know, he's
- 41:14Speaker 5: always intense, But imagine Nick Cage, yeah, doing this really
- 41:19Speaker 5: mysteriously kind of like he's Mike Michael Jordan. We talked
- 41:24Speaker 5: about it on set that he's he's Michael Jordan and
- 41:27Speaker 5: that kind of confidence. But intensity and kind of you know,
- 41:33Speaker 5: domination that he wanted to dominate everybody, you know, and
- 41:36Speaker 5: so he he was in character the whole time, and
- 41:39Speaker 5: he was I would say slightly antagonistic at times with me,
- 41:43Speaker 5: but I think we we love each other and respect
- 41:46Speaker 5: each other. But it was it was a challenging shoot.
- 41:50Speaker 5: Creativity is amazing. His lines like talk about like we're
- 41:54Speaker 5: talking about sports. But he he was so prepared that
- 41:59Speaker 5: he knew the script a lot better than me. Like
- 42:03Speaker 5: even though I wrote the script, but I didn't like
- 42:07Speaker 5: re memorize every line, remember every you know. He knew
- 42:09Speaker 5: everybody else's line, you know, and he could memorize it
- 42:12Speaker 5: so quickly. And but then also he'd have these like
- 42:16Speaker 5: phenomenally creative ideas that you know, I'd be like, all right,
- 42:20Speaker 5: let's let's try that, you know, because I wanted he's
- 42:23Speaker 5: just creative, you know, I want people to be creative.
- 42:25Speaker 5: You know what do you mean by like one time
- 42:27Speaker 5: he said, you know, I want to take I want
- 42:29Speaker 5: to take this meat. It was raw buffalo meat, little
- 42:32Speaker 5: bloody or raw, and I want to I want to
- 42:35Speaker 5: like smack his face with it, this guy, the other
- 42:37Speaker 5: other character, and I'm like, all right, Let's let's try that.
- 42:42Speaker 2: I want to.
- 42:46Speaker 5: Like a big, like five pound piece of meat.
- 42:50Speaker 1: So that he's showing the creative How would you describe it?
- 42:52Speaker 1: He was slightly antagonistic towards you can you give me
- 42:55Speaker 1: an example of that.
- 43:01Speaker 5: I don't know if I should say that, but one time,
- 43:03Speaker 5: like at the very beginning of the shoot, he was
- 43:05Speaker 5: sort of playing trying to find his his accent, and
- 43:10Speaker 5: it was like the first day, and I was like,
- 43:12Speaker 5: you know, he started, you know, basically using the accent,
- 43:15Speaker 5: and on the first day of the shoot, the first scenes,
- 43:18Speaker 5: and I'm like, you know, Nick, I think it should
- 43:21Speaker 5: be a little bit less kind of accenty. Maybe I
- 43:25Speaker 5: couldn't like quite articulately say what do you mean? What? What? What? What?
- 43:28Speaker 5: Like like what tell me? Show me what what do
- 43:30Speaker 5: you what do you mean? And I could tell he
- 43:32Speaker 5: was getting you know, really, I was like, you know,
- 43:34Speaker 5: just your normal voice, you know, you're you know, you
- 43:37Speaker 5: don't you don't need to do the accent. It was
- 43:39Speaker 5: just like, you know, I almost like caused a huge fight,
- 43:43Speaker 5: you know, right on the first day. And so I
- 43:45Speaker 5: was like, Okay, this is gonna be this is gonna
- 43:48Speaker 5: be an interesting shoot, you know, but I had worked
- 43:51Speaker 5: with Nick Cage on on Bad Lieutenant with Werner Herzog
- 43:55Speaker 5: and I produced the first kind of film that I
- 43:59Speaker 5: was involved with, and that was that was a wild shoot.
- 44:02Speaker 5: But anyways, Nick knew me from there and kind of,
- 44:05Speaker 5: you know, we were friendly.
- 44:06Speaker 3: So you know, yeah, I can only imagine the countless stories.
- 44:12Speaker 3: But I want to unpack your your most recent and
- 44:16Speaker 3: probably the most fascinating subject you've tackled, the man who
- 44:19Speaker 3: Saved the World. I mean for our audience members, just
- 44:22Speaker 3: to kind of give a kind of brief description of it.
- 44:25Speaker 3: But I find it's so fascinating kind of the story
- 44:27Speaker 3: of you know, River, Patrick McCollum, you know, it's connection
- 44:30Speaker 3: with Jane Goodall and all that. I just think it's
- 44:32Speaker 3: such a cool, cool concept and just wanted to have
- 44:36Speaker 3: you break it down for us.
- 44:37Speaker 1: And you mentioned Herzog game. It definitely feels her Zoggi
- 44:40Speaker 1: And if one might say, go ahead.
- 44:42Speaker 5: Well, I've got a story about that. But the story
- 44:45Speaker 5: is about a kind of a spiritual outlier named Patrick
- 44:49Speaker 5: McCollum that is approached by elders of the of the
- 44:52Speaker 5: Amazon rainforests, many of them at a peace gathering they
- 44:56Speaker 5: came to him and said, Patrick, we think you're this
- 45:00Speaker 5: guy in this prophecy that we've had for hundreds of years,
- 45:04Speaker 5: when the world is in a dire place, there will
- 45:08Speaker 5: be a man who comes that helps essentially unite the
- 45:12Speaker 5: tribes of the Amazon to restore the Amazon and essentially
- 45:16Speaker 5: save the earth. And Patrick McCombs says, you know, I
- 45:19Speaker 5: don't think i'm the guy. I'm just a regular guy,
- 45:22Speaker 5: you know whatever. But then ultimately, after several years, he says,
- 45:26Speaker 5: you know what I'm gonna I'm gonna just see what
- 45:28Speaker 5: this is and I'm gonna go down and try and
- 45:31Speaker 5: fulfill this prophecy. And I kind of learned about the
- 45:34Speaker 5: story reluctantly, really and just and decided to ultimately kind
- 45:41Speaker 5: of follow this guy as he tries to fulfill this prophecy.
- 45:44Speaker 5: But really it's a character study. This guy's like a fascinating,
- 45:47Speaker 5: kind of really eccentric character that's very it's funny, you know,
- 45:53Speaker 5: And and that's what the.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Story is, Like I said, because the doc is about me,
- 45:58Speaker 1: who's so quirky. Now she makes you think of Werner
- 46:00Speaker 1: Herzog cause you said you worked together about the Tenor protocol. Yeah,
- 46:03Speaker 1: give me the Herzog story to.
- 46:04Speaker 5: This, Oh god, this is this is good. Well, I
- 46:08Speaker 5: don't want to well anyway, So I screen a cut
- 46:12Speaker 5: for Verner Hertzog in my house and I start to
- 46:16Speaker 5: notice that he's kind of squirming, and you know, like
- 46:20Speaker 5: it might not you know, I was like, man, I
- 46:22Speaker 5: wonder what's going on. And so after the film he
- 46:25Speaker 5: tells me, you know, Gabe, there's gonna be like a
- 46:27Speaker 5: lot of people that like this film, you know, these
- 46:30Speaker 5: new age kind of people and you know, these sort
- 46:35Speaker 5: of pseudo spiritual people whatever, you know, But I'm I'm
- 46:38Speaker 5: not one of them. And you know, Verner supported my
- 46:42Speaker 5: work and and you know, he was an executive producer.
- 46:45Speaker 5: He you know, he really genuinely loves my work. And
- 46:50Speaker 5: you know, obviously I wasn't devastated because I'm a big
- 46:53Speaker 5: boy and like, you know, some people aren't gonna like
- 46:55Speaker 5: your film. But he basically goes on to tell me
- 46:59Speaker 5: that it was too painful. It was painful for him
- 47:03Speaker 5: to watch. I'm like why, He's like, well, because my
- 47:07Speaker 5: dad was like this essentially mentally ill guy. He was
- 47:13Speaker 5: actually in the National Socialist Party Party where he came
- 47:16Speaker 5: back from the war, and he would basically have people
- 47:19Speaker 5: over and he would tell them all these stories, like
- 47:23Speaker 5: and the kids would sit around the table and be
- 47:25Speaker 5: like dad, like in their head, like, what the hell
- 47:28Speaker 5: is he talking about? He's making up all this crazy stuff.
- 47:31Speaker 5: And afterwards they go to their dad and say, this
- 47:36Speaker 5: is all what are you talking about? He would just
- 47:38Speaker 5: stare at them with like a blank stare, and everyone
- 47:40Speaker 5: knew that he was just like literally crazy. So for Werner,
- 47:44Speaker 5: I think it was just too painful to see a
- 47:48Speaker 5: guy who kind of is like that, and he couldn't
- 47:52Speaker 5: watch it, like, you know. The irony is that everybody
- 47:56Speaker 5: who I've shown the movie to the one of the
- 47:59Speaker 5: first things that say, oh, that's kind of like Herzog.
- 48:01Speaker 5: It's like, yeah, so I knew that if anything is
- 48:05Speaker 5: like Herzog, it's like this movie morally, you know. So
- 48:08Speaker 5: I find it very ironic that hers yeah, that that
- 48:13Speaker 5: he sort of says that, and a lot of his
- 48:16Speaker 5: characters are like guys like.
- 48:17Speaker 3: This, speaking of greats that are misunderstood, let me go.
- 48:21Speaker 3: I was gonna say, speaking of greats that are misunderstood,
- 48:24Speaker 3: let me wrangle this back. Connor McDavid, here h, I
- 48:27Speaker 3: saw you post something about watching Connor McDavid live and yeah,
- 48:31Speaker 3: and kind of being amazed by the way he creates
- 48:34Speaker 3: plays And is he kind of somebody you keep an
- 48:37Speaker 3: eye on or do you have a player right now
- 48:38Speaker 3: in the NHL that is a favorite yours. I know
- 48:41Speaker 3: you're super busy kind of promoting the film and all that,
- 48:43Speaker 3: but just checking in on the stories right now that
- 48:45Speaker 3: are happening in the NHL.
- 48:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I I the fact. Unfortunately, the first time I
- 48:55Speaker 5: tried to watch Connor McDavid in LA, he was injured
- 48:58Speaker 5: and I actually went to the game and he was scratched.
- 49:00Speaker 5: I brought a friend and I was super bummed. And
- 49:03Speaker 5: then the next time it was the Stanley Cup final
- 49:06Speaker 5: when they lost and and he just didn't do anything.
- 49:09Speaker 5: So but I I what I love is is is
- 49:14Speaker 5: somebody who always does not necessarily but always does something
- 49:20Speaker 5: productive with the puk, you know, trying to make place people,
- 49:25Speaker 5: trying to to be creative and and and doing making
- 49:31Speaker 5: a play, you know, not just not just to be fancy,
- 49:34Speaker 5: but to really, you know, be be productive. So I
- 49:40Speaker 5: need some help from you guys. Who should I be?
- 49:42Speaker 5: But there are and there are also players that are
- 49:44Speaker 5: sort of unexpectedly uh you know, like I was saying earlier,
- 49:49Speaker 5: they they might not look like they're the most talented,
- 49:54Speaker 5: but they're always like making stuff happen and and and
- 49:58Speaker 5: I find that really interesting or like unconventional players, you know,
- 50:02Speaker 5: uh so I.
- 50:04Speaker 1: Could see you liking the Kachucks, Kape, Matthew and Brady
- 50:06Speaker 1: because they play with the kids. Are exciting players.
- 50:09Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, who would be a Werner Herzog to you
- 50:14Speaker 5: of a player?
- 50:16Speaker 1: Who would be Brad Marshan just crazy out there. Brad
- 50:21Speaker 1: Marshank came out, what about the fight? He took the
- 50:24Speaker 1: other guy's helmet and he literally started ripping up the
- 50:26Speaker 1: helmet in the penalty box. He started ripping it out,
- 50:29Speaker 1: and you gotta get that fucking helmet back. He's like,
- 50:31Speaker 1: oh okay, here you go. He got five twenty five
- 50:33Speaker 1: undred dollars this who the hell the fight takes helmet?
- 50:37Speaker 3: I'd say Brandon tannev with the thousand yards stare. He
- 50:41Speaker 3: has all the pictures where he doesn't blink. I feel
- 50:43Speaker 3: like that would be that'd be a close comparable. But
- 50:46Speaker 3: I mean you're in La so so you see Anse Copatar.
- 50:49Speaker 3: I mean, that's an unconventional guy in today's NHL. Like
- 50:52Speaker 3: he's not super fast, but he's able to create and
- 50:55Speaker 3: be creative within his frame because he's not the fastest,
- 50:59Speaker 3: but he's able to buy time in space and kind
- 51:01Speaker 3: of you know, make these plays a seemingly nothing.
- 51:06Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, and and and it's just so cool how
- 51:10Speaker 5: every player has just like a little bit of a
- 51:13Speaker 5: different style about them, you know, and that that's that's
- 51:16Speaker 5: kind of the cool thing about the NHL is just
- 51:21Speaker 5: you know, like I just remember the days of like
- 51:24Speaker 5: Yager and Lemieux. I mean, everyone's just like has such
- 51:27Speaker 5: a unique and Gretzky and eyes, you know, Sakic has
- 51:32Speaker 5: another style and this guy, you know, everyone has like
- 51:35Speaker 5: just a little bit of a different style and players
- 51:38Speaker 5: instead of like I said, you know, conforming, but it's
- 51:43Speaker 5: you have to really develop your own thing, you know.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Well he's definitely developed his own thing. And Gabe Polsky
- 51:50Speaker 1: has been a remarkable filmmaker. I encourage everyone to go
- 51:53Speaker 1: check out his new film. It's called The Man Who
- 51:54Speaker 1: Saved the World. Gave tell everybody where they can see
- 51:57Speaker 1: this terrific movie.
- 51:58Speaker 5: Yeah. So on the website The Man who Saves Theworld
- 52:01Speaker 5: dot com are all the show times, Uh, and events
- 52:05Speaker 5: that we're we're having and they'll be updated. We're going nationwide.
- 52:09Speaker 5: We're going kind of not necessarily super fast, but we'll
- 52:12Speaker 5: be around in every city. And on social it's who
- 52:15Speaker 5: saves the World and yeah, that's that's.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Be on the lookout and go see it please. And
- 52:24Speaker 3: also we're starting to write a KHL import comedy for
- 52:30Speaker 3: for a hockey based movie. So let's let's get it.
- 52:35Speaker 3: I will I will throw my hat in the ring
- 52:37Speaker 3: to play a Russian.
- 52:39Speaker 1: I'll do it.
- 52:40Speaker 2: I'll throw it in the ring. I can still skate
- 52:42Speaker 2: at beer League.
- 52:44Speaker 5: All right, all right, let's do it.
- 52:49Speaker 1: Mm hmm, all right, more hockey talk on the way,
- 52:56Speaker 1: Maybe a little bit of baseball talk here, as the
- 52:58Speaker 1: Blue Jays are in the World Series. But first Cinophile
- 53:00Speaker 1: in sixty Mistress Scorsese landing an Apple TV plus credible
- 53:04Speaker 1: comprehensive five part four and a half documentary from Rebecca Miller,
- 53:08Speaker 1: also known as Daniel Day Lewis's wife. So she has
- 53:11Speaker 1: known Marty for a long time and of course d
- 53:13Speaker 1: DL loves Marty worked to them on the Age of
- 53:15Speaker 1: Innocence and Gangs of New York. Unforgettably is Bill the Butcher.
- 53:18Speaker 1: It's absolutely fabulous for guys like me and Tell and
- 53:21Speaker 1: Hey JD. If you love moves, who does love Martin Scorsese.
- 53:23Speaker 1: The first bread I thought was the most educational because
- 53:25Speaker 1: that was about his upbringing. Who would have thought a
- 53:27Speaker 1: guy who is in his eighties still has buddies from
- 53:30Speaker 1: the neighborhood. That, to me is my favorite party. Guy's
- 53:32Speaker 1: talked about little Marty running around little Italy when he's ten, eleven, twelve,
- 53:36Speaker 1: the fact he studied to be a priest, and as
- 53:37Speaker 1: one of the guys said, I know it wasn't gonna happen.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Marty had a heavy eye for the ladies, and I
- 53:41Speaker 1: was like, all right, that's why Marty couldn't be a
- 53:43Speaker 1: priest one day. And then you go through. One of
- 53:46Speaker 1: the favorite parts of this early section is, you know,
- 53:49Speaker 1: the first episode builds beautifully as I texted Tell, a
- 53:52Speaker 1: couple of jump cuts, you know, Jumping Jack Flash comes on,
- 53:55Speaker 1: which is the music that De Niro entered to in
- 53:57Speaker 1: Mean Streets, and Jay Cox, who's Marty's longtime friendly collaborator, goes,
- 54:00Speaker 1: you gotta meet this guy. I gotta meet this guy.
- 54:01Speaker 1: I've got a party who then he cut to a
- 54:03Speaker 1: shof is smirking Robert de Niro. Cut to the credits
- 54:05Speaker 1: episode one in the books, So episode two is about
- 54:08Speaker 1: Mean Streets and now Bob and Marty are working together
- 54:10Speaker 1: and guys from the neighborhood. And one of the funniest
- 54:12Speaker 1: parts is they're talking about de Niro's character in Mean Streets.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Mean Streets literally lit up the revolution in the seventies, right,
- 54:16Speaker 1: people love movies. Pauline Kale said, this marks the beginning
- 54:19Speaker 1: of a singular filmmaking talent in Martin Scorsese. And they
- 54:22Speaker 1: asked you here, who's your character based on He says,
- 54:24Speaker 1: what was what in Marty's uncles? And also another guy
- 54:26Speaker 1: from the neighborhood, and they said, we're gonna talk to him,
- 54:28Speaker 1: and Denier kind of gives that pause, like is he
- 54:30Speaker 1: still alive? Like these guys are old now, right, they're
- 54:32Speaker 1: in their eighties. So they find the guy. The guy
- 54:34Speaker 1: calls me. He's like, hey, yeah, they're doing this documentary
- 54:36Speaker 1: on Marty. They want to talk to you. The guy comes,
- 54:38Speaker 1: he's like, you're the guy that Deannio's playing. Basically, Mean
- 54:40Speaker 1: Streets is like, yeah, yeah, Money did a good job
- 54:42Speaker 1: with it. Money did a good job with it. These
- 54:45Speaker 1: guys are so authentically from that era and from that time.
- 54:49Speaker 1: The documentary then, of course goes into Taxi Driver, one
- 54:51Speaker 1: important film that was not only you know, sound from Denio,
- 54:54Speaker 1: but obviously people were just influenced by the movie. Daniel
- 54:57Speaker 1: D Lewis says, I watched Taxi Driver six times when
- 54:59Speaker 1: it came and I just kept going over and over
- 55:00Speaker 1: to go see this movie. Jodie Foster talks with the
- 55:02Speaker 1: impact it had on her. We get to Raging bullcanp Comedy.
- 55:05Speaker 1: The final part is leader to DiCaprio because Marty kind
- 55:08Speaker 1: of thought he was dead in the nineties. He's like, oh,
- 55:09Speaker 1: you know what, Condone didn't work out religious epic about
- 55:12Speaker 1: the Dalai Lama bringing up the Dead, which reunited him
- 55:14Speaker 1: with Paul Strader and starred Nicholas Cage. Gay Polski's buddy
- 55:18Speaker 1: didn't do well at the box officuely because I think
- 55:20Speaker 1: it might just be done, and all of a sudden,
- 55:22Speaker 1: DiCaprio says, because oh my god, my hero is Martin Scorsese.
- 55:24Speaker 1: I'll work with him. Really, So we get like the
- 55:26Speaker 1: third or the fourth act of Marty's career, Gangs of
- 55:29Speaker 1: New York The Aviator of the Departed. He finally wins
- 55:31Speaker 1: an oscar, Wolfe of Wall Street, which is his most
- 55:34Speaker 1: successful financial film, made over four hundred million dollars worldwide,
- 55:37Speaker 1: The Irishman, ten Oscar nominations, and of course Killers of
- 55:40Speaker 1: the Flower Moon. It's an incredible documentary. Tell there's a
- 55:42Speaker 1: lot to take away from it, but I love the
- 55:44Speaker 1: fact Marty himself is the most engaging guy. He's funny,
- 55:47Speaker 1: he's interesting, he's honest, five marriages, cocaine addiction, overcame an
- 55:52Speaker 1: overdose which led to Raging Bull. He's very open about
- 55:55Speaker 1: his life and open about the films that he loves.
- 55:58Speaker 6: I mean, just an amazing life. I would have liked
- 56:00Speaker 6: to see more about his performance in Shark Tale, but
- 56:03Speaker 6: maybe that'll be for another story. But I mean, he's
- 56:08Speaker 6: it's such a tribute to his resilience as a person
- 56:11Speaker 6: and as a filmmaker. I mean, the thing I love,
- 56:13Speaker 6: other than the fact that he had to wear a
- 56:15Speaker 6: bulletproof vest to the Oscars because of the John Hinckley shooting,
- 56:18Speaker 6: which is crazy, inspired this guys driver, right, and so
- 56:22Speaker 6: he has this run where he makes mean streets taxi
- 56:26Speaker 6: driver and Raging Bull, and then he makes a couple
- 56:28Speaker 6: of flops and his career is over, and then he
- 56:31Speaker 6: has this run in the nineties, and this might be
- 56:33Speaker 6: one of the best runs any filmmakers that ever had.
- 56:35Speaker 1: From ninety to ninety.
- 56:36Speaker 6: Five Good Fellas, Cape, fear Age of Innocence, Michael Jackson's
- 56:41Speaker 6: Bad Video, and Casino, just one after the other. Then
- 56:45Speaker 6: he does kon Doing which you mentioned and bringing out
- 56:48Speaker 6: the Dead, and his career.
- 56:49Speaker 1: Is over again.
- 56:50Speaker 2: It's just crazy.
- 56:50Speaker 6: And then he's done again after making all these incredible films.
- 56:53Speaker 6: And then, as you mentioned, he teams up with DiCaprio
- 56:56Speaker 6: and he just goes right back at it.
- 56:58Speaker 1: Some of the best collaborators of stories are his longtime
- 57:01Speaker 1: friend and oftentimes people compare them his rivals, but they're
- 57:03Speaker 1: good friends. And Steven Spielberg's Peber talks about how much
- 57:06Speaker 1: he loves Taxi Driver and he said, when I watched
- 57:09Speaker 1: Raising Bolam, like he's done it, Like he's done again.
- 57:11Speaker 1: To paulma again close friend. In many ways a father
- 57:13Speaker 1: figured that Marty was like, God, damn it. He's like
- 57:15Speaker 1: what he goes you watch good fuzdzs He go, shit,
- 57:17Speaker 1: you go, what do you go? Marty's done? It again
- 57:18Speaker 1: because we're all competitive, we're all directors. Go Marty beat
- 57:21Speaker 1: us again, like this sucks man, Marty got us again,
- 57:24Speaker 1: you know, the great shot and then touchable as JD.
- 57:26Speaker 1: Remember when the baby carriage is coming down and Kevin
- 57:29Speaker 1: Coster is running Andy Gercy's ready tosses the gun to him.
- 57:31Speaker 1: It's a beautiful, right slow motion tracking shot. Marty goes,
- 57:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna top that. So in Goodfellas, that's where they
- 57:37Speaker 1: have that copra shot of Henry Hall taking Karen into
- 57:40Speaker 1: the club going in the back. He's like, oh, how
- 57:41Speaker 1: long was Di Pauma's tracking shot? Three minutes. I'm gonna
- 57:43Speaker 1: make mine five minutes. We'll make it even more glorious.
- 57:45Speaker 1: And people talk about that inning as well. So it
- 57:47Speaker 1: doesn't matter what that world is. They're all super competitive,
- 57:49Speaker 1: but they're all great, great guys and great friends. I
- 57:52Speaker 1: encourage everyone to check out Mistres Scorsese. The Flora is
- 57:54Speaker 1: Jason de Burr's Good Fortune New Disease in Sorry movie,
- 57:57Speaker 1: Talk to me.
- 58:00Speaker 2: This is a great film.
- 58:03Speaker 1: You felt like we went long with polls because you're
- 58:05Speaker 1: going quick on your come on now, I mean, yeah,
- 58:08Speaker 1: just it's it's kind of one of those like you know,
- 58:11Speaker 1: tugs of your heartstrings a bit, and and you know
- 58:14Speaker 1: there's the undertones of like does money solve problems?
- 58:17Speaker 3: And and yes it does, but does it really? And
- 58:21Speaker 3: you know, is losing yourself and losing the life you
- 58:24Speaker 3: have and being happy where you are more important than
- 58:27Speaker 3: you know, chasing something or also just chasing something that's
- 58:30Speaker 3: you know, worthwhile to you and and you know, so
- 58:32Speaker 3: it's just weird. They just kind of play on the
- 58:34Speaker 3: whole you know, upper class, lower class. You know, countter
- 58:38Speaker 3: Reeves is a is also an angel that's not happy
- 58:41Speaker 3: in the position he's in even though he's doing good work,
- 58:44Speaker 3: you know, stopping people from texting and driving. And that
- 58:46Speaker 3: is the funny thing. He is the he is the
- 58:48Speaker 3: angel that touches your shoulder when you were texting and
- 58:51Speaker 3: driving about to crash. So he saves lives but doesn't
- 58:53Speaker 3: believe he's doing enough and wants to save a lost soul,
- 58:56Speaker 3: and in doing that, he ends up overstepping his boundaries
- 59:00Speaker 3: because he is an angel of you know, texting and driving,
- 59:04Speaker 3: not you know, fixing lost souls. So he ends up
- 59:07Speaker 3: diving into that and trying to fix his He's on
- 59:09Speaker 3: sorry who hates his life and is a lost soul
- 59:11Speaker 3: and wants to be gone, so gives his He's on, sorry,
- 59:13Speaker 3: all this rich in wealth and says he won't be happy,
- 59:16Speaker 3: you won't enjoy all this rich in wealth because that's
- 59:19Speaker 3: not like the point of life. And he's like, I'm
- 59:21Speaker 3: gonna check back on you in a week. And in
- 59:23Speaker 3: a week he comes back and he's on sorry. He's like,
- 59:26Speaker 3: I'm not leaving, and he's like and they're like, so
- 59:29Speaker 3: wait a minute. He's like, you know, he's like, what
- 59:32Speaker 3: do you mean I'm not leaving? And he's like he's
- 59:34Speaker 3: like yeah, he's like this is great. He's like, you're
- 59:35Speaker 3: telling me. He's like, why would I want to go
- 59:37Speaker 3: back to my life? So then you know it's Count
- 59:39Speaker 3: of Reeves talking with the angel, the head of the angels,
- 59:41Speaker 3: and she's saying, you know, why.
- 59:44Speaker 2: What did you What the hell did you do? Why'd
- 59:46Speaker 2: you overstep your boundaries.
- 59:47Speaker 3: He's like, I was trying to show him that money
- 59:48Speaker 3: doesn't solve your problems, and she goes and and he
- 59:51Speaker 3: goes it solves ninety five percent of your problems, but
- 59:55Speaker 3: becomes this weird kind of mix of it of like
- 59:57Speaker 3: is money the key to happiness and all these things.
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: So in Seth Rogan's great, count who's great. He plays
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: his kind of like mumbling, fumbling actor that we all
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: love and love to watch, and you know, he's just
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: he's he's one of those he's one of those actors
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: you root for and no matter what he's in it,
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: no matter if he's got awful, you just it's you
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: enjoy to watch him.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: So good, good watch, good film.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Good pacing, and uh yeah, it's kind of one of
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: those movies you smile at the end.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Blue Jays in the World Series first time since ninety three.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: The Krack and war Mariners jerseys to the rink before
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: their four to three overtime win against the Leafs in Toronto.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: That propped the Blue Jays to reach it to Crack
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: and Ford Shane Wright, who's your product of Burlington Turior?
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: That felt the first pitch out of Jay's game. Next season,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: the Jays win the Game seven. Quasi jersey swap. Austin
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Matthews and Vlad Junior. Matthews were a Guerrero jersey before
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: the game Tuesday night, Vlad sporting in Matthews jersey before
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Game seven. How about this Jays run in the fact the
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: hockey guys JD are paying you know what this is
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: like Sanose guys pay attention, Niners giants for the local
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: team is Warriors, right.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: Toronto Blue Jays are Canada's team. Let's go no hockey team,
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: that's if they witness thing, which you know, I think
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: this might be quick, but but I mean, what a
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: what an astonishing feat that they've pulled off. And I
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: mean it's I'm an Expos fan and that's as far
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: as my kind of baseball documen goes, you know, growing up,
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: and you know, I watched Vladdie. You know, I watched
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: Lattie and and you know I watched his dad and
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: and you know what Moises Alul, Larry Walker and all
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: these amazing names, and it was so much fun. And
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: you know, Canada can handle a baseball culture. And I
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: think there is a lot of huge baseball fans in
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: Canada and it's fun to see, you know, them make
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: it here.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: And I mean, listen this.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: They say it might be easy, and I think, you know,
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: Dodgers probably walks all over him, but Boba Schet's back.
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: I mean, there's there who knows, you know, Cinderella story
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: it's what is it like one billion versus three hundred
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: and thirty million, It's like some crazy number. But the funny,
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: the funniest part of that is when when Vladdie was
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: wearing the Matthews jersey and everybody posted poor Matthews. They
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: posted all his playoff stats and they're like, it's over.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Yeah. Whereas VOT has been a playoff monster, ALCS MVP
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: has been absolutely incredible and it was really cool seeing
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: the crowds erupting at the hockey games in Montreal and
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Calgary for the Jay's. I was in Montreal, as tal knows,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: doing Sabers habs. What else would you want to be
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: doing during Game seven of the Blue Jays Mariner series,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: and I had my producer in my ear, Just go, George,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: And I just said to John Fordon, who was the
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: voice of the Seattle Crack and gay by the way,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: for as he congratulations three one Mariners. Looking good. He so, hey,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: I'm objective. I'm really happy for those guys. I'm pulling
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: for Seattle, like I know you're so. Then, literally, as
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: we're wrapping up, thanks to what you're watching, Habs win
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: four two, lighton Houtson, What a straight prices Americas. George
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Springer three run home run. I go and I like
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: the Walter Crockett. I'm being told that George Springer has
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: just hit a three run home run, the Blue Jays
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: have taken lead, and you just hear the crowd erupt
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: and I'd asked Jeff Gordon, the president of the ABS.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: I talked to Marty Saint Louis. I said, they said,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: we're watching the Jays, and I said, I don't know
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: if people are interested in much. Rob'd assume, like JD,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: you're an Expos family. They left, Okay, I'm just not
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: gonna like baseball. He said, yeah, but you're getting like
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: fifteen year olds. I don't even remember. The experts were
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: just baseball fans, so then they're Jays fans, and then
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: you will get the older guy who goes, well, the
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Exposts guys still like baseball? Why not?
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: So?
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: I was actually Taladell if you've seen that, but in
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: Murell walk around the bars and stuff. They were maybe
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: because it was a Game seven, and I don't know
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: baseball fans there.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: And quickly tell tad to that like that would this
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: would never happen in hockey, Like when you look at
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: because there's only one team in Canada for baseball. But
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: like if Toronto makes it to the finals, like no
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: Calgary Flames fan or Edmonton Oris fans is gonna be
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: rooting for the Toronto even though we haven't won in
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: fucking forty years. So it's like crazy to see Canada
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: kind of unite continue.
- 1:03:45Speaker 6: Yeah, I think the country would be. It would be
- 1:03:47Speaker 6: very challenging for Canadians if say the Leafs made the
- 1:03:51Speaker 6: Cup final, because as much as Canadians want to see
- 1:03:53Speaker 6: a Canadian team finally win the Cup, they don't want
- 1:03:56Speaker 6: to see the Leafs do it.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Like that's that's the team that is.
- 1:03:59Speaker 6: So overexposed because of who they are and where they're located.
- 1:04:02Speaker 6: That I think a lot of Canadians are just tired.
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: Plus there's six other Canadian teams for them to root for.
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: In baseball it's just the Jays, and basketball it's just
- 1:04:10Speaker 6: the Raptors. So those are Canada's teams. And you know,
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: like you mentioned Ad, now there's there's a whole a
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: couple of generations now of baseball fans in Montreal never
- 1:04:19Speaker 6: even got a chance to see the Expos.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: So it's exciting.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: I think it's exciting.
- 1:04:24Speaker 6: I think, look, Nick Schuzooki's a captain of the Habs,
- 1:04:26Speaker 6: He's a JAS guy. All these NHL players from Canada
- 1:04:29Speaker 6: are a Jay's guy. They're clearly Canada's team.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: They're going to be a.
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: Monster underdog against the Dodgers. But I think that'll make
- 1:04:35Speaker 6: it pretty exciting. And I will add the fact that
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: they crushed the Yankees. I think everyone started when that happened.
- 1:04:42Speaker 6: Everyone started piling on the Jay's bandwagon and it's just
- 1:04:44Speaker 6: been growing since then.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Yeah, Dodgers a formidable opponent. They're starting. Pitching is unbelievable.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Otani had the best playoff game I've ever seen in
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: my life. Six innings, two hits, ten strikers, and he
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: hit three home runs. So Otani pitching is going to
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: be unbelievable.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: It's say with me, guys.
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: Yeah, ooh Canada, ooh Canada.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: I can't damn Canada.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Last thought, bring it home with my Quebec boys. Big
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: announcement from the Avalanche unveiled now bec Nordik's Throwback seventy season,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: commemorating the thirtieth anniversary the team moving to Colorado two
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: games against the former Hartford Whalers were now the Hurricanes.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Do you love this tribute to the great city of
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: Quebec City, Michelle Gully the Stasites JDS.
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: Signal stolen valor do not take my goddamn beloved Nordiick's
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: and bring them to Denver, Colorado. I don't care if
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: it's a tribute. It's not a tribute. Are you donating
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: that money to Quebec, to the city, to the rink
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: that was built for Quebec Nordiak's team?
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: And I don't care.
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: I'll say it. It doesn't sit right with me. I
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: don't like it, and I don't want to see any
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: part of it. I don't care how nice the jerseys are, because.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: No, you're not.
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: You are You're keeping all the money though, You're keeping
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: all the fucking money, just like the Whalers. Same thing
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: with the Whalers in Carolina. That is not your team.
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: That is not your team. You are the Carolina her Urricanes.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: You are not the Carolina Whalers. You were the Hurricanes.
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: You stole our team, You stolen Colorado from under us,
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: and oh god, the Nordeeks need to come back.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: To go back, because now what do you do now?
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: If the Nordieks come back, or if Quebec it's a team,
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: well you're gonna take it back from Denver to fucking Colorado.
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: I never liked the avalanche. I never did. Never did.
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: Stolen Valor, Stolen Valor.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: I like that. That's because you get tunnel for this podcast.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Just called it stolen vallord. This is Stolen Valor episode.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: It's great.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: Yeah, let's just pay tribute to everybody, to make money
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: off everybody.
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: Let's just do that. Let's pay tribute. Let's do spitting
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: chick lits and let's pay tribute to them. And we're
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: spitting chick litscre and call ourselves spitting chicklets.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: And then just make it take all the money from it.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: We'll talk a bit, we'll make it happen. Tall your
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: thoughts and whether pay homage the Nordiks. Are you with
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: JD A's Stolen Valor?
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: So?
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: When I spoke to Howard Baldwin about a topic.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: He's a fucking turn He's a fucking turncoat.
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: Tell he's you know, we talked about whaler's name in Carolina.
- 1:07:03Speaker 6: He basically called it a cash grab and said that
- 1:07:06Speaker 6: if the hurricanes really cared about Hartford they'd played an
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: exhibition game or a regular season game there, so I
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: would I would probably make the same point. I love
- 1:07:13Speaker 6: the throwbacks. I love seeing the retro stuff out there.
- 1:07:16Speaker 6: But I do think, I do think if the Avalanche
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: really do care about their history, particularly the history in Quebec,
- 1:07:22Speaker 6: they should play at least a preseason game in Quebec City.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: I don't know why they haven't.
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: They can wear the Canadians against the throwback jerseys. Yeah,
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: where the where the Nordics throwbacks against the Canadians in
- 1:07:34Speaker 6: Quebec City for a preseason game.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: It would be a lot of fun.
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: They should do like a They could do an inner
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: squad game. They could do three days there and play
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: you know, Toronto. You could do everything. It's again to me,
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: it's it's lazy marketing and I don't like it. Listen
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: do which I can like a lot of things the
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: NHL does, and a lot of the things the NHL
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: team said, this is not one of them. Team my dad,
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: my dad's company basically provided the glass for the Sante
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: video that was built for the NHL hockey team, and
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: that was never used. It's used by the ramparts now.
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: But and it's I did play in it, but it's
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: absolute bullshit.
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: And I liked nipops.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: I didn't know the salt or video throlle No.
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: But I mean, I'm I'm I was born in Montreal,
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: but I've lived most of my life in Quebec City,
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: so it's like I understand the pain, the sorrow, the
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: hurt right from under us.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: As you said, exhibition game in Quebec City. Then talk
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: to me, I asked TJ. Raddick years ago. I said,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: you know you have like a wish list if you're
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: the ANHL commissioner. She asked mego, I'd love to see
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: a team Inquebec City again. I go, just tell me
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: about what it would take, and he goes, A billionaire
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: owner and a new rink. I go, okay, well, I'll
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: just pray for those things to happen.
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: Maybe one a fine one. Let's get there. If we
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: sell unscripted, we could maybe buy it.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: Billionaire owner and a new rink, bring back the Nordics.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: Thanks so much for checking up NHL and scripted. Perhaps
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: the farewell next week, No plenty more HL and in
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: scripted to come. Thanks so much for checking us out
