- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Well, thanks for inviting me, Jacqueline.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to talk about the things that are important to uh for a business.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so so tell me, you know, that that opening, like efficiency and growth.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: You know, why?
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Like why do you like where what's the blind spot and and how and I'm gonna that's a two-part question, but which uh hopefully you'll answer in two different ways.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: I didn't I know I should not stack, but what made you see this?
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: Like what got you seeing it?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um really where it goes back to is you kind of go back in time.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: So, you know, you said 25 plus years of experience.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Well, I go back to the time when after you know going through college and getting my first job to learning the business world, being in marketing and working with some Fortune 50 and 500 companies, and learn from that, and then also too, um, starting to basically own operate a company, uh a physician company, um, earlier in my career where there was over 200 physicians, over 12 hospitals I was working with, and learning that.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And what you learn is efficiency.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Uh, you would there's a lot of inefficiencies and different things.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Healthcare is not uh immune to that.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And that was something I learned.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: It was like, how do I make this job?
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: How do I make things more efficient?
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Not just for me, not for the organization I was running, but also too for the hospitals, for the people that are coming in to see the doctors, the doctors themselves.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot of things that can break down.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: So that was something that was I learned right away.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: That was like, well, this is important.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: How do we how do we see people, give them the right care?
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: How are they not there for their whole day?
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Um, so there are several steps that to has taken me to this point now in my career.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I have so many different things because I I could go down the path of physicians, so maybe we'll have to talk about that off a different topic because my husband's a physician and inefficiencies in hospital is drives a crazy crazy in leadership.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: That's a whole other thing.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: So tell me, you know, you know, you're helping people find us, and you as a fractional COO and CFO, you know, I you said something before the show that almost kind of like baffles me.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Like I always think that every company automatically has a CFO.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: But that's not the case.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: That is not the case.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, because you know, as as companies grow, when you first start one and it's you have an individual founder or several founders and they're growing, and they're all what happens, and this is talk goes back to the efficiency things, they're doing everything.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: They have a couple of employees possibly, and they're just doing everything possible because one, it's in their minds, it's cheaper.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Um, they're the ones that know about the company, they're running it, they're constantly looking for if they're getting, you know, if they're looking for clients or customers or whatever the term you want to use, they're just gathering, gathering, gathering.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And at that same time, which I've had experience dealing with too, is you don't set things up, you don't put things in place, efficiencies in place.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: You don't put, you know, metrics and all the things that people hear, the terms, the buzzwords you hear over the years of business, uh, are not put in place.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: And all of a sudden years go by and you're like, well, how come, how come we're our expenses are going up so high, but our revenue is going up even higher, but our expenses are passing our revenue.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: And that's where it's like, okay, what are you doing?
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: How are you setting yourself for success?
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And no one, you never, it's harder to go back in time and saying, okay, we've been doing this for five to ten years.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Let's go back and fix all the problems.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And then they realize, oh, we need to hire people.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Well, if I hire someone, then that's less money for me.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: I can't pay my debt off.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: So it kind of it snowballs into a a bigger problem.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: So then that's why there's never a they don't bring a CFO and they're like, oh, I can do numbers.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, there's a lot of people who feel like, well, if I do this, I can do this.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: And yeah, you can, but you're not efficient at it, you're not good at it.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: And you're missing, you're you're losing the this in the sight of what could it really be versus what it is today?
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: And that's I think something that uh CEOs kind of miss at times.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Um the opportunities they lost and they thought they were controlling everything.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: So where do you think a company is like, you know, is there like a timeline where you say, you know what?
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: You need when you hit this mark, you definitely need to make sure that you have somebody like a COO or a CFO.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Because it's true, like you know, we all have our expertise.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: And I and it and what you just said is that we are blind to the things that we don't know well, right?
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: Like I can't know every part of the business.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: You know, you almost like stick in your lane to um and hire somebody else to do the thing that you might be okay at it, but you're not great at it.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: And that's the thing, is the pain point is where that is.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Because people have asked me in the past, when should I hire you?
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: When should I come in?
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Is it this amount of revenue, this many millions of dollars?
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Is it this many employees?
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: And it all depends.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: And I always go back to the basics, like, okay, why are you doing what you're doing?
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: What are you, what is your business trying to accomplish?
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: What is your mission and vision of your business?
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: And then understanding that, and then saying, and one of the simple things is are you growing a business because you want to make money?
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: You're growing a business because you want to sell it, are you growing a business because you want to provide people jobs in your community?
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Um, what is it?
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: So at first you have to pick that one out for me.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: It's like I need to know that.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: So I gotta understand your why and where you're wanting to go.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: From there, then I can tell them, okay, this is where you this is when you need to bring a CEO in or a CFO.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: So if you need more operational people, then that's good.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: If you need a uh finance person, this is when you need to bring them in.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And that's where it is, because as you get grow and go uh your company is growing in revenue, and also other things are coming into play, there's a lot of numbers, and it's like, yes, you can add and subtract.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: That is, but it gets more complicated than that.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: You could have amateurization, you can have all these other things that you're, you know, your recurring revenue, your your you know, you're there's so many things that you have to look at, and you can't just uh just do that like you did before because you're busy, maybe you're the salesperson too.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: So you're busy doing sales, but it's like, but I don't have time for the finance part.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: And you can get a bookkeeper, it can do those steps, but sooner or later you're gonna need someone that really understands how something operationally works, and also too that financial person be able to see what the CEO is wanting and desiring and helping them seek out and you know accomplish their their vision and mission of their business.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: And I think that's where they realize they have to do that.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: So you just said something that I think is really key and it's a huge insight, and I want to make sure that we get this right that get this spelled out clearly.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Um, a COO or CFO or fractional CFO versus a bookkeeper.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: And the CFO is as you just shared, really hones in and carries what that vision and mission is of a company is.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Where your bookkeeper is just tracking the books.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: And you have to make sure they're I mean, in in the bookkeeper still has to track the books, is understanding what the books mean and what it's what it states.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: The the the CFO, the fractional CFO is looking at a str they're uh they're being very strategic.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: They're looking at your finances, they're looking at what your resources are, and they're strategically saying this is what you need to do and when, and helping guiding that CEO to the place where they're like, okay, you can do this now.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: This is a way you can do this, and here are your options to get you to the next next place, next step in what you're trying to accomplish.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: And that's why you have that person that that's they think numbers, but they also think vision, they also think execution, and like I can do more than this.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Because yes, you can get an accountant, which your accountants are great.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: I always have an accountant too on top of, even though I'm a CFO.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: They have a place, but they're not going to be that strategic thinker.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: They're just looking at numbers, they're making sure you're safe, make sure you don't get yourself in trouble by the government, you know, those type of things.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: So they're focused in one area.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: For me, I'm looking at the broader picture and saying, how do I get you to there?
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: And then here are the solutions, and here's, and then also, too, I can help execute those solutions for you.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Okay, so what I want to hear is because this is this is really great.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: So give us a story about somebody you've helped and and and the difference it made in their business.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Well, there's yeah, I'll give you a couple, I'll give you first story.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: One of the things I had done uh when I was working uh when I first was operating this physician group, is they were growing, they were doing fine on their own, um, but they needed, they're like, something's missing, we just can't get it.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: We're we're physicians and they do a great job, but they're just like understanding the business aspect of it and also working with administrations and things like that.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: There's a balance.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: And we everyone's trying to do the same thing as take care of people.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: But there's that middle ground where it's like there's a lot that's going on and confusion.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: So I come into that.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: So there are a couple of times with this, the organization I worked with, is that they came in some some financial crisis, meaning their their uh insurance was going up by 300%.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: So I had to look, how how do we do that?
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: How do we find another insurance company that's gonna insure this organization and what's that gonna look like?
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: And how do we do that?
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: And interviewing people and trying to make sure, and in the hospitals, like, where's do you have insurance?
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: And so that was a problem-solving thing I had to do is like look at is what is our numbers, how do we make these work?
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Because we it was out of the there's no budget for that to where all of a sudden it came out of the middle of the year, and you're like, well, I got 300% I got to come up with for a premium to pay.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: So those are solutions where I look at and say, okay, how do we navigate this and uh make this work?
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Uh so that is one of the one of the things I've have done, and I'll give you a real quick another one is come into an organization and they are doing fine.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: They've been around forever, but their finance department was struggling.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: And it's like, okay, how how can I help?
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: So they came, they came in for being as a process person efficiency.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: So they hired me to come in as a fractional CFO and say, look at our look at our process and our procedures and things like that.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: So as I'm digging into it, I'm just like, oh wow, there really are not those process and procedures in here.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: And they're doing things, no one's doing anything, anything incorrectly or inappropriately.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Uh, so that's good.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: That's the first thing.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: But then there's like, but there's things that were errors and mistakes and things that were being missed, and it's because they didn't have things in place.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Great people, knowledgeable in what they're in their field, but they just nothing was cohesive to where it was like they're pointing them in the right direction to where the team was working as one.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: So I've gone in there and basically reworked the team, helped them with their processes and continue to put them in the right place so they can continue to be successful as they are in providing a service that they uh been doing for you know over 50 years.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: So that's what you're thinking, okay, a company that's over 50 years old, they should have this figured out.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: And like, nope, it happens.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: It's it's like sometimes people can really just get through it and somehow they are able to make it manage it.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: Other people like they're doing everything they can possibly do, check anything off the list, and it doesn't work for them and they have to close up.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: So that's really interesting.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: The company's 50 years old, and they again doing things and what going around uh going along, but obviously realize that there was there's inefficiencies that were happening.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: And so curious, did they have a CFO?
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: And they and the CFO brought you in, or was it Yeah, they had a you know, a CFO.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Um, and so really the CEO brought me in um to this because they had been talking and concerned about things, and someone had mentioned me and said, Oh, this is what this is what Mike does.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: This is what he comes in and looks at what's going on and kind of give a report of what is the overall structure, and that's uh what they like, okay, that's what I need.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: And it had, you know, there was new management and things like that.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: So that's why they're like, Yeah, let's just try this out because there was a pain point.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: The person recognized a pain point and it's like, we have to change.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: If we don't change, this isn't good for our group.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: And that's where sometimes it's uh new leadership, new new perspective, and the and or to a point where it's like it's getting to a point where it's like, yeah, we got to do something.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it takes uh CEOs a while to really, you know, say, okay, I need help.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Well, that's it's you know, it is.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: It's hard to get to that point where it says, I need help.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: And so do you almost like have like a checklist or something that says like, if you check these boxes, this is the time that you might you might need the help almost to help people recognize that?
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I kind of walk through like an intake uh packet with them, basically.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: I just sit down with them and I just first I get to under like understand who they are, what they're trying, what what is their goals, what's what are they trying to accomplish.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: So I walk through those with them, and then the next step is like, okay, tell me about what's been going well, what's not been going well, from your perception or your what you've seen or experienced.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: And I walk through those things.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: And as I walk through those, then I start, you know, taking notes.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I interview, uh, if it's a department, I interview the department.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: I just individually, and it's like, I'm here just to help.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: I'm help, I'm here to empower you to be better at your job.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: And this is what I'm trying to do.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: It's not me trying to, you're not gonna lose your job.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: You're not, you know, these are not things I'm trying to accomplish.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: I'm just trying to figure out how we can you can be a better team and how um we can be more efficient so you enjoy your job.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Um, because sometimes people, maybe the things are happening because it's just they're overworked or they just don't know, they're taking too much of the time and something they shouldn't be, and they should be doing it differently.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: And it's like helping them have that work-life balance.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: So that's a little bit also to what I had try to help accomplish uh for them, um, which is maybe as an extra added bonus for them.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: It's not just for the CEO, it's for the person who I'm working with too, the other people and the the staff trying to make sure it's like, yeah, we got to make your your life a little bit better here and outside of here.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: So there's a separation of both.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: You know, it's actually kind of interesting from a leadership standpoint, it's really important for people to recognize, you know, as a leader, to recognize when your team is working, you know, where they're working too hard just to almost band-aid something to make it work, and what that leader can do when they could bring somebody in to create those efficiencies.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: And then I'm I'm assuming once you do that, I'm you know, I'm curious, like, you know, what's been the percentage increase to that again, bottom line?
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Well, no, it's definitely uh I've seen that with several of my uh uh groups I've worked with in the past in the recent, you know, this past year and currently is like they're seeing a huge shift where the revenue coming in and their expenses, everything is adjusting the way it needs to, and then also too, expanding because like now you can now bring in other employees to help this area because you can afford it.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, before you couldn't afford it because they were so inefficient, you were losing money in an area that you shouldn't have been losing money.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: And I think that's where it's like, wow, this is actually gonna help you again go to the next level that you're looking for, or the thing you've been trying to get to for so long, and you're like, why can't I get there?
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: And it's like, oh, now I freeze up this person's time, their resources, um, in trying to get you know back to where they're not trying to stay their head above water, basically.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: They're not drowning every day and wishing they didn't have to come to work.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: So right.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: And and that's actually a huge thing.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: So to me, like one of those this is a huge insight and game changer, and I want leaders to really understand this.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: And and I can probably talk to them blue in the face about this, but you know, uh the creating systems and putting, you know, standard operating procedures in place, you know, on the financial side and actually throughout your business to help create those systems so that your people can be more effective and efficient will actually raise the bar so that they're likely to come and work, have happy employees, happy company, greater growth.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: And sometimes when you get that when you get that greater growth, what ends up happening is you don't necessarily have to hire more people for the growth.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: It just happens naturally because people are happy to be at work.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: And you keep retention.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: Your your your employee retention is so much better because everyone talks about the cost of not retaining.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: If you lose people and you're continuing to retrain, retrain, retrain, you're losing money.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Um, that that amount of money you it's hard to even quantify at times, but yeah, you are losing a fair amount of money if you're constantly having a rotation of people coming in and out of your organization and you have to start all over again.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: And then they're trying to learn from somebody that's not there anymore.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: And it's it's just a it's a really bad cycle to be in.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Yep, it's so true.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Um having turnover, turnover costs American, and this is like I know it's American companies.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Um and I I'm not gonna quote the number, but I remember reading something where it was like somewhere around like 4.5 billion dollars just in in efficiencies when you know, and that's just US companies, not we're not talking worldwide.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: Um it's a huge, huge cost.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: So, you know, so leaders and CEOs, if you want to create more efficiencies and you want to grow your business, make sure you've got Mike in your back pocket to help, you know, with that, you know, whether you have a CFO or not, you know, this is really important because creating those efficiencies will drive your growth and create create better, happy employees.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: Um, Mike, you know, how can people find you and connect with you?
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Yes, the two ways you can find me.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Uh of course on LinkedIn.
