Transcript
- 0:00Bonjour tout le monde et bienvenue à notre podcast, à
- 0:04Learn French with Alexa. Today's podcast is number four.
- 0:09You know the drill, I will read a short passage in French based
- 0:13on a fun fact about me, Alexa Polidoro.
- 0:15So if you're listening to it and do not know me, that should be
- 0:20quite interesting. You're going to think, but why,
- 0:23or why should I listen to fun facts about you?
- 0:26You don't have to listen. But this one is quite fun.
- 0:30Now, the text is of A1-A2 level in French, which means that it's
- 0:35beginners-intermediate level. So remember that this podcast is
- 0:40all about understanding the grammar and practicing your
- 0:43listening skills. Okay?
- 0:46I'm going to read the first passage of a fun fact on me,
- 0:49Alexa Polidoro, and then we'll ask you a question, and maybe
- 0:54two questions. Who knows?
- 0:55Okay. Now, the focus of this
- 0:59particular passage is based on idioms using the verb faire or
- 1:05avoir. We're going to have a look at
- 1:08the idioms in a minute. But first of all, read-- not
- 1:12read, but listen very carefully. Écoutez attentivement.
- 1:15I'm not telling you what it's about because you're going to
- 1:19tell me in a minute what you think the text is about.
- 1:23So here we go. Je vais vous faire une
- 1:28confidence. Moi, j'ai horreur de faire la
- 1:32bise.
- 2:08Okay, so what is the podcast about?
- 2:11Now, you may have heard the word bise quite a lot, and that's
- 2:15exactly the title of the podcast.
- 2:17Faire la bise. What is faire la bise?
- 2:21And that's part of our first idiom.
- 2:26Now, to do a kiss, or to make a kiss is faire la bise in French,
- 2:31but it's not any kind of kisses. Okay?
- 2:35So when you do a kiss, when you "fais la bise", it means that
- 2:40you say hello to someone. In France, we kiss on both
- 2:46cheeks, but sometimes three times, and sometimes four times.
- 2:50So faire la bise is basically when you kiss someone hello or
- 2:54au revoir. Okay?
- 2:57So here's my first question. I'm going to read it to you
- 3:00again. Qu'est-ce que je n'aime pas
- 3:03faire ? So this is about me.
- 3:06Qu'est-ce que je n'aime pas faire ?
- 3:09Or, qu'est-ce qu'Alexa n'aime pas faire ?
- 3:11Okay, so listen to it again. Qu'est-ce que means what.
- 3:16What is it? Je n'aime pas is a negation.
- 3:19Ne, aime, pas. When you hear ne and pas, it
- 3:23means not. Okay, so what is it I do not
- 3:27like to do? Qu'est-ce que je n'aime pas
- 3:30faire ? So try to answer in French if
- 3:33possible. If not, just answer in English.
- 3:35But listen to the passage again. Now, we've had a look at the
- 3:41first idiom, faire la bise. How many other idioms can you
- 3:46see? Listen very carefully.
- 3:48Écoutez attentivement. Je vais vous faire une
- 3:53confidence. Moi, j'ai horreur de faire la
- 3:56bise.
- 4:32Okay, so we've listened to the passage a second time.
- 4:35Can you answer: Qu'est-ce que je n'aime pas faire ?
- 4:38This one is quite obvious. What is it I do not like doing?
- 4:41So this is a fun fact about me. Of course, it's faire la bise.
- 4:48To say hello, kissing people on both cheeks.
- 4:52And can you imagine if I had to do it three times or four times?
- 4:56In my region, we do it only twice.
- 4:59Faire la bise is not my favorite thing in the world.
- 5:04There are many things I don't like.
- 5:07If you listen to the podcast, you would realise that actually,
- 5:11I'm very difficult. Je n'aime pas faire la bise
- 5:18would be the answer to this question.
- 5:21However, if you wanted to say, well, Alexa does not like
- 5:24kissing to say hello, you would say, Alexa n'aime pas faire la
- 5:29bise. So the verb remains the same.
- 5:32It's the present tense. The ending for je and il, elle
- 5:37or on is exactly the same. It's an E.
- 5:40So je n'aime pas, il n'aime pas, elle n'aime pas, on n'aime pas,
- 5:45etc. And what about you?
- 5:46How do you feel about faire la bise?
- 5:49So you could say, I like it, j'aime faire la bise.
- 5:54Or you could say, I do not like it, je n'aime pas faire la bise.
- 5:58Now, here is a second question before we move on to reading the
- 6:05text another time. Dans quelle région fait-on
- 6:10quatre bises pour dire bonjour ? Dans quelle région ?
- 6:15Quelle région means which region.
- 6:17Dans quelle région, in which region, fait-on quatre bises
- 6:22pour dire bonjour ? We do four kisses to say hello.
- 6:28Which region in France ? So listen really carefully.
- 6:31As I said, sometimes we do deux bises, sometimes trois bises,
- 6:37and sometimes quatre bises. Listen very carefully.
- 6:42Je vais vous faire une confidence.
- 6:45Moi, j'ai horreur de faire la bise.
- 6:48En effet, quand on pense à la France, on pense souvent à la
- 6:54bise. La bise, c'est faire un bisou
- 6:57sur les joues pour dire bonjour à quelqu'un.
- 7:00Et alors, attention, les règles ne sont pas les mêmes partout.
- 7:06En général, c'est deux comme à Paris, mais à Marseille ou à
- 7:11Montpellier, c'est parfois trois, et quatre en Normandie.
- 7:17Vous imaginez ? Dans ma région, on en fait deux
- 7:20pour dire bonjour et au revoir. And two in my region is far
- 7:26enough for me anyway. So the question is : dans quelle
- 7:32région fait-on quatre bises pour dire bonjour ?
- 7:36In which region do we do four kisses to say hello, or goodbye
- 7:41for that matter, by the way, ou au revoir.
- 7:44So what do you think ? Did you hear ?
- 7:47Well, Normandie. The Normandie region, which is
- 7:51the west side of-- sorry, North, West is Brittany.
- 7:57Normandie is not at all. It's west of Paris, if you wish.
- 8:02So en Normandie, on fait quatre bises pour dire bonjour et au
- 8:07revoir. So that would be your ideal
- 8:10answer. En Normandie, on fait quatre
- 8:12fois la bise pour dire bonjour. Now, do you remember that the
- 8:17focus of this podcast was about idioms ?
- 8:19So we've learned one, faire la bise, to kiss hello or goodbye.
- 8:26Now, another one was faire une confidence.
- 8:29So je vais vous faire une confidence.
- 8:32I am going to let you in a secret.
- 8:35This is me letting you in my confidence.
- 8:39Je vais faire une confidence is part of an idiom using the verb
- 8:44faire. And by the way, at Learn French
- 8:46with Alexa, the full complete French course has a full lesson
- 8:53on the verb faire and activities such as faire du piano, faire de
- 8:57la trompette, etc., in lesson eight of the full course, if
- 9:02you're interested in checking this one out.
- 9:05So faire la bise, faire une confidence.
- 9:08And the third idiom was avoir horreur de.
- 9:13Now, this is the second sentence.
- 9:15Moi, j'ai horreur de faire la bise.
- 9:18So within that sentence, you've got two idioms.
- 9:21Avoir horreur, j'ai horreur. Of course, we have conjugated
- 9:25avoir in the present tense. I have horror of.
- 9:31So that means I detest or I hate doing that.
- 9:35But the idiom is avoir horreur de.
- 9:38Again, there are many idioms using avoir + something + de.
- 9:44So another thing I could think of is avoir besoin de, to need
- 9:48something, whereby you would have to conjugate the verb avoir
- 9:51in whatever tense you want and add besoin, then de.
- 9:55So avoir besoin de means to need something.
- 9:58But avoir horreur de means to hate.
- 10:02Avoir envie de, to feel like something.
- 10:06So there's quite a few. Again, we cover that in the
- 10:08course. So three idioms.
- 10:14Faire une confidence, faire la bise, avoir horreur de.
- 10:18If you're enjoying learning French with me and would like to
- 10:22go even further, my certified complete French course brings
- 10:26everything together in one place.
- 10:29You'll have lessons, quizzes, and support guides to help you
- 10:34reach your goals. And it's all taught by me.
- 10:37Use code Alexapod for 15% off. So let's have a look at the text
- 10:43now. Je vais vous faire une
- 10:46confidence. We know what that means.
- 10:48I'm going to let you in a secret.
- 10:50Moi, j'ai horreur de faire la bise.
- 10:52I hate kissing people on the cheek to say hello.
- 10:55That's basically faire la bise means that.
- 10:58En effet, quand on pense à la France, In fact, when you think
- 11:01of France, on pense souvent à la bise.
- 11:04We often think of the bise. La bise, c'est faire un bisou
- 11:08sur les deux joues. The bise is when you kiss
- 11:12someone on both cheeks to say hello.
- 11:14Pour dire bonjour à quelqu'un, to someone.
- 11:19Mais, et alors attention. But be careful.
- 11:23Les règles ne sont pas les mêmes partout.
- 11:25The rules aren't the same everywhere.
- 11:28Partout means everywhere. En général, c'est deux comme à
- 11:32Paris. Generally, en général ou
- 11:34généralement, you can say it's two, as in Paris.
- 11:39In Paris, it's two. Mais à Marseille ou à
- 11:43Montpellier, so the southern Marseille and Montpellier, c'est
- 11:47parfois trois. It is sometimes three kisses.
- 11:50Parfois trois. Et quatre en Normandie.
- 11:55So when you say you're going to bonjour, quatre fois.
- 12:00If you've got to do and say hello to about 10 or 20 people
- 12:05in front of you that you know, if it's a wedding or whatever,
- 12:10that's what you would have to do.
- 12:12Now, can you imagine ? Vous imaginez ?
- 12:16Dans ma région, on en fait deux pour dire bonjour et au revoir.
- 12:20In my region, we do two to say hello and goodbye.
- 12:24Now I'm going to tell you a little story that when I was at
- 12:28school, in high school back in the '80s, that's telling you my
- 12:33age, when I was a teenager, we used to faire la bise every time
- 12:40we saw someone in the morning. And usually not necessarily
- 12:46friends, but if you said hello to your friend and kissed them
- 12:51hello, like faire la bise, you would have to faire la bise to
- 12:55every single one next to them, even though you're not friend
- 13:00with them or you don't know them personally.
- 13:03Okay? And the same goes for au revoir.
- 13:07So every single morning, every single evening, you would have
- 13:12to faire la bise. That was a common practice, and
- 13:16it was a polite way to say hello.
- 13:19Now, can you imagine my state every time I saw a friend that
- 13:25was surrounded by about 20 schoolmates?
- 13:29I hated it because that means I had to say hello to every single
- 13:33one of them by kissing them. You're going to think, "Well,
- 13:38Alex, you have an issue." Yes, I do.
- 13:41As a matter of fact, I don't know whether it's a hygiene
- 13:45thing or whatever, but yeah. Unless you're my super good
- 13:49friend, I'm not going to do that.
- 13:51Anyway, now you know. So in today's podcast, we have
- 13:56seen three idioms, faire une confidence, avoir horreur de,
- 14:01and faire la bise. Now, of course, for more
- 14:05podcasts like this, and in order to practice your listening
- 14:09comprehension, why don't you have a look at the other
- 14:13podcasts of this very series that I have already done.

- 14:21It's very much up to you. If you want to see a different
- 14:25format, let me know as well, and I will start a series on that
- 14:29very format. Whatever works.
- 14:31That's it for me. Au revoir, à bientôt, bisou,
- 14:34bisou.
