Speaker 3: No, I don't have any family back in the tree from from that era.
• 5:09
Speaker 1: Where are you from that area?
• 5:11
Speaker 3: I live in Midland right now, midland Texas, midland, texas.
• 5:14
Speaker 3: Are you an oil man?
• 5:15
Speaker 3: No, sir, i'm one of the few in Midland that is not in the world business.
• 5:18
Speaker 3: Yeah, i built highways.
• 5:20
Speaker 3: I will, you do.
• 5:21
Speaker 3: I work for a highway contractor That's been in existence for over 75 years.
• 5:26
Speaker 2: Okay, cool, so you?
• 5:28
Speaker 2: your job is never ending because they never finished construction on anything.
• 5:32
Speaker 2: That's correct, it's always you know, let's build eight lanes.
• 5:35
Speaker 2: Oh well, let's build 12 lanes.
• 5:38
Speaker 2: What they finally do?
• 5:39
  Speaker 2: I 10, What is it 16?
• 5:41
Speaker 1: Oh, it's more than that's like 20 lanes.
• 5:42
Speaker 1: Yeah, you could include the feeders.
• 5:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, but we're not here to talk about that.
• 5:46
Speaker 1: We're here to talk about the Lone Star Street Rod Association and the Run that we have here.
• 5:54
Speaker 1: The state run, the state run.
• 5:55
Speaker 1: Yes, and it's 48 years old.
• 5:57
Speaker 1: This is our 48th annual.
• 5:59
  Speaker 1: That's correct.
• 6:00
Speaker 1: Are there any members left from the original bunch?
• 6:04
Speaker 3: There are still a few running around really there there are.
• 6:07
Speaker 2: Are there any here today?
• 6:08
Speaker 3: Okay, rolling around, hobbling around.
• 6:11
Speaker 1: Well, there's no so much about we're all, we're all familiar with that.
• 6:15
Speaker 3: I know I got a phone call from a gentleman named gone Don Goodnight.
• 6:20
Speaker 3: He was one of the original Founders.
• 6:24
Speaker 3: Okay, well, he anticipated he would be here.
• 6:28
Speaker 3: I've not seen him yet today, but they're again retired.
• 6:32
Speaker 2: Yeah, Jackie said he is member number five.
• 6:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, something, something like that, and I was hoping to see him Prior to y'all getting started and such, but I've not.
• 6:42
  Speaker 3: I haven't located him yet.
• 6:44
Speaker 3: How'd you get involved in this?
• 6:45
Speaker 3: My dad, really my dad in the mid-later 70s, my dad, well, we.
• 6:53
Speaker 3: He became a member of Lone Star and then Then they, he missed the meeting.
• 6:58
  Speaker 3: Whatever.
• 6:58
Speaker 3: He turned out to be a director missed a meeting and got elected.
• 7:02
  Speaker 2: You got it.
• 7:04
Speaker 3: So anyway, he was a director based out of San Antonio and down in the lower valley and such.
• 7:10
Speaker 3: And then 10, 12 years down the road, whatnot?
• 7:17
Speaker 3: his life got busy, he stepped back, so on and so forth and then about 12 years ago I got a phone call From the board and they asked me to be a director.
• 7:30
Speaker 3: So I had a conversation with that.
• 7:33
Speaker 3: He said the pay is terrible.
• 7:35
Speaker 1: We know it's here.
• 7:36
Speaker 1: We know about this car club stuff.
• 7:38
Speaker 3: Yeah, so he says.
• 7:39
Speaker 3: But He says you, you've grown up in the culture hanging around with me.
• 7:45
Speaker 3: He says, uh well, he taught, just talk me into it.
• 7:49
Speaker 3: So I have the distinct honor of being the only, or at least the first anyway.
• 7:56
Speaker 3: Second generation director, that's very short.
• 7:59
Speaker 1: Yeah, now, what kind of?
• 8:01
Speaker 1: what kind of did that?
• 8:02
Speaker 1: obviously had a hot rod of some sort.
• 8:04
  Speaker 3: Yes sir.
• 8:05
Speaker 1: Well, do you have it now.
• 8:07
Speaker 3: That's it right there, wow.
• 8:08
  Speaker 1: Oh, that's it, That's it.
• 8:09
  Speaker 3: What is it?
• 8:10
Speaker 3: That is a 1937 Osmobile business coupe.
• 8:14
Speaker 2: My kind of guy Oldsmobile Well it's absolutely beautiful.
• 8:17
Speaker 3: That car was going to be my high school car.
• 8:21
Speaker 3: We got it when I was 14.
• 8:23
Speaker 3: That's like we're knocking on 50 years ago, wow.
• 8:27
Speaker 3: And I think he used me as a pawn to convince mom to let him buy and start building the car.
• 8:33
Speaker 3: So you know, going to build it for the boy.
• 8:36
Speaker 3: Well, he determined that, one, it was going to be cool when we got done with it And, two, i would wreck it because I was going to be a 14, 16 year old kid with a hot rod.
• 8:46
Speaker 3: With a hot rod, did you?
• 8:48
Speaker 3: No, because he never gave me the opportunity, we started building.
• 8:51
Speaker 3: and he says No, you're going to wreck it, so we're going to find you something else.
• 8:54
Speaker 1: So I got a later model car.
• 8:55
Speaker 1: What kind of motors it got in.
• 8:57
  Speaker 3: It's got an Oldsmobile 350 out of a 71 Cutlass.
• 8:59
  Speaker 3: That's all.
• 9:00
  Speaker 3: Oldsmobile buddy.
• 9:02
  Speaker 2: Pure dependability.
• 9:03
  Speaker 3: Pure dependability.
• 9:04
  Speaker 2: Allegedly.
• 9:05
Speaker 3: Speaking of that, that motor and that car have over 350,000 miles on it and the pan and the heads have never been off that motor.
• 9:15
  Speaker 1: Oh my Lord.
• 9:16
Speaker 3: And I can crank it right now.
• 9:18
Speaker 3: She doesn't smoke nothing and it loves 80 to 85 mile an hour on freeways.
• 9:22
Speaker 1: Well, clearly it's not the original transmission.
• 9:25
  Speaker 3: Absolutely not.
• 9:27
Speaker 1: No, what do you?
• 9:27
Speaker 3: got an R4 in it, No it actually has an old turbo 350 in it?
• 9:32
  Speaker 1: Wow, yeah.
• 9:32
  Speaker 1: So what's it?
• 9:33
Speaker 1: running at 70 miles an hour, how many RPMs you get out of that?
• 9:37
  Speaker 3: We're a couple of 22 ish.
• 9:41
  Speaker 1: Oh, it's not.
• 9:41
Speaker 1: It's not that bad.
• 9:43
Speaker 3: No, it's geared to run on the highway.
• 9:44
Speaker 3: The rear is, i see Gotcha So, but no, it's.
• 9:47
  Speaker 3: It was built.
• 9:48
Speaker 3: That car has seen all four coasts It's.
• 9:51
Speaker 3: It's been into Canada.
• 9:52
Speaker 3: It's been to the keys in Florida, it's been to the LA Roadster show.
• 9:56
Speaker 3: Oh wow, half a thousand times all of this out of San Antonio.
• 10:01
Speaker 2: Have you been to the Old Sombrale Nationals at any point?
• 10:03
Speaker 3: No, it's not that I'm aware of.
• 10:05
Speaker 2: I don't think that ever made that.
• 10:06
Speaker 3: But it doesn't mean that doesn't mean it won't make it.
• 10:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, but we were smart enough.
• 10:14
Speaker 3: I say we dad, because he made all the decisions.
• 10:17
Speaker 3: That's still alive, dad passed away about five years ago.
• 10:20
  Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sorry.
• 10:21
Speaker 3: Yeah, and he kept the car in his possession until he was unable to drive and then tried to get me to come get it And I would not come get the car and take it to Midland till after his passing was he in the sense, still in San Antonio?
• 10:36
  Speaker 3: He's yeah, he's, he's.
• 10:39
Speaker 3: He passed away in San Antonio.
• 10:41
Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, yeah So, but fittingly in in the procession funeral procession from San Antonio up into Bernie to the final resting place.
• 10:53
Speaker 3: Those will build led the process.
• 10:56
Speaker 3: I love that And with mom in the passenger seat and it's great.
• 11:00
Speaker 3: And so it was.
• 11:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's all everybody knows.
• 11:06
Speaker 3: That is Bill's Old Sombrale.
• 11:09
Speaker 1: I would imagine that's not the same paint job that was on there That is the third paint job.
• 11:13
Speaker 3: Third, He wore out the first two Prior to this.
• 11:17
Speaker 3: It was candy tangerine lacquer that he painted it in the driveway.
• 11:22
Speaker 3: Oh wow, In front of the house.
• 11:23
  Speaker 3: That's a talent.
• 11:25
Speaker 3: Yeah, and it was nice right up to.
• 11:29
Speaker 3: you know, as lacquer gets old, it's it kind of ages.
• 11:31
Speaker 3: You know how we wrinkle and crack.
• 11:33
Speaker 3: Well, so does not mean oh well, we won't go into that.
• 11:39
Speaker 1: Yeah, what kind of rubber you got on the back end of that.
• 11:44
Speaker 1: You even know black round Yeah.
• 11:47
  Speaker 1: And the headlights.
• 11:49
Speaker 1: surely you've done some modification to the bulb or something.
• 11:56
  Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, absolutely.
• 11:57
Speaker 3: Well, you know the car was six volt, it's all 12.
• 12:00
Speaker 3: It's got air conditioning, it's got power windows, it's got, you know, all those creature comforts that are necessary for the cruise to the West Coast or or Burlington Vermont.
• 12:11
Speaker 1: Now was a business coupe like that, only a two seater.
• 12:13
Speaker 2: Correct There's no jump seats in it That that trunk is literally six foot deep for all of this because he would carry all of his wares in the trunk Correct, and you're able to sleep in it and and but and.
• 12:27
Speaker 3: Behind the driver's seat there's a set of shelves where he could place all of his literature and such.
• 12:33
Speaker 3: If he was pedaling vacuum cleaners or whatever it may be, He had all the work in there as brochures and such there, and his, his wares to be sold were carried in the trunk and that's what made it a business.
• 12:45
Speaker 3: That's what makes it a business coupe.
• 12:48
Speaker 3: And and, like I say, he figured out how he could haul everything under the sun, i mean under the seats, you, you, you name it.
• 12:59
Speaker 3: He had every nook and cranny cram full because they take off and be gone week two at a time.
• 13:04
Speaker 3: He and mom and I mean they, that was basically his daily driver when they got on the road.
• 13:10
Speaker 1: That's sweet, yeah, i'll tell you that that body style is very reminiscent of what they used for, what they used for Mars.
• 13:21
Speaker 1: Did you not know that there was a wire there?
• 13:23
Speaker 1: But that that they use that body style at Meyers Speedway with great big some of them for 27 Ford and Chevy engines race time in the mid 60s at my speedway Yeah, and that body style was extremely popular, of course, without the fenders, yeah.
• 13:43
Speaker 1: Great big fat tires on it, yeah.
• 13:45
Speaker 1: But as far as I'm concerned, if I were to have a hot rod, that'd be it right there.
• 13:51
Speaker 3: Well, in the trademark waterfall, waterfall grill you.
• 13:55
  Speaker 3: Just it's distinctive.
• 13:57
Speaker 1: Yep, yep, and most definitely is.
• 13:59
Speaker 1: You know, i don't believe I've ever seen an old automobile grill.
• 14:02
Speaker 1: I've never seen an old automobile that I'm aware of.
• 14:04
Speaker 1: Because you know, there it is, yeah, that generation of that generation.
• 14:08
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 14:09
  Speaker 2: I've got a 70 rally 350.
• 14:10
Speaker 2: Oh not probably the same motor in that 350.
• 14:14
  Speaker 3: Correct, that's 310 horse 350.
• 14:16
Speaker 2: Yeah bulletproof, except mine's like 3200 RPM at 75 miles an hour, but it's running 343.
• 14:23
Speaker 3: Yeah, And this is probably sport in 288 or 305s you know, smooth down the highway.
• 14:29
  Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's that's.
• 14:30
Speaker 3: That was the whole idea.
• 14:32
Speaker 3: It's not a light to light, no, no, no, no, but it's plenty respectable.
• 14:37
Speaker 1: Is it the original chassis?
• 14:39
  Speaker 1: Yes it is.
• 14:41
  Speaker 3: Well, it's now.
• 14:42
Speaker 3: It does have a Nova clip under the front end.
• 14:45
Speaker 3: Got it, yeah, but other than that, yeah.
• 14:50
  Speaker 1: And what?
• 14:50
Speaker 1: what did you do for the suspension?
• 14:53
  Speaker 3: Same Yeah.
• 14:54
Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, we the.
• 14:56
Speaker 1: Can you buy shocks for something like that?
• 14:58
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you can, Oh yeah, it's, it's a 70 ish Nova front clip.
• 15:07
  Speaker 1: Oh.
• 15:08
Speaker 3: Easy to buy shocks for and it's just a standard shock mount in the rear.
• 15:12
Speaker 3: And I mean for the longest time when the car was originally built, when the state run was held up at Waco at Fort Fisher Park, there was a lot of camping available on site.
• 15:24
Speaker 3: So this car would drag a Coleman pop-up camper from San Antonio to Waco and Is there still got a hitch on it?
• 15:34
Speaker 3: No, we took it off.
• 15:34
Speaker 3: I got tired of banging my shins on it.
• 15:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, oh yeah it.
• 15:38
Speaker 3: just because you had to stick it out so far past the bumper and you know, nobody said I was a bright kid.
• 15:43
Speaker 3: Anyway, i just run into everything and anything, but no, when it's gorgeous, the detail in the chrome on.
• 15:51
Speaker 3: That's really well, and That's what I was getting at a while ago.
• 15:54
Speaker 3: We were smart enough not to think we were a better car designer than the original designers at GM.
• 16:02
Speaker 3: So it has all of the original stainless and everything on the car.
• 16:08
Speaker 3: We didn't take any of it off, we didn't change any of the body lines, didn't drop the top, you know, didn't pancake the hood, didn't leave.
• 16:15
Speaker 3: I mean we just.
• 16:16
Speaker 3: I have a 57 Buick also and someone asked me are you gonna chop the top on it?
• 16:21
Speaker 3: What makes you think that I think I'm smarter than Harley Earl?
• 16:25
Speaker 2: the man that designed the car.
• 16:27
Speaker 3: So But no, we were all big about and dad instilled in me When you build a car, if you build in the nose mobile.
• 16:40
Speaker 2: Make it an old make an Osmo bill.
• 16:42
Speaker 3: Put Osmo bill power in it.
• 16:43
Speaker 2: So you Buick's got a nail head in it nail head still running the original 364.
• 16:47
