Ep. 257. Who is Jubilee in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:10
Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all nerds between My Name is
• 0:12
Megan and I'm Here with another character breakdown of a mutant.
• 0:16
Of course, usually I do episodes about underrated mutants, but I
• 0:20
have had this episode about Jubilee.
• 0:23
I've had the script written and it's just been burning a hole in
• 0:26
my pocket this whole time. So we're going to talk about
• 0:28
Jubilee today. Jubilee first appeared in
• 0:30
Uncanny X-Men #244 in January of 1989, and she was created by
• 0:34
  Chris Claremont and Mark Silvestri.
• 0:37
Jubilation Jubilee Lee It's a hard thing to say.
• 0:42
Jubilation Lee, AKA Jubilee grew up living in what looked like
• 0:46
the perfect life. Born to wealthy Hong Kong
• 0:48
immigrants, raised in Beverly Hills, CA, and she went to an
• 0:52
elite private school where she quickly stood out as a very
• 0:54
gifted gymnast. But everything changed the night
• 0:57
her mutant powers surfaced while running from mall security.
• 1:01
The stress triggered a massive burst of explosion, which was
• 1:04
light energy coming from her hands.
• 1:06
It dazzled everyone around her and gave her just enough time to
• 1:10
escape. Not long after, tragedy struck.
• 1:14
Jubilee's parents were killed in a mysterious car accident,
• 1:17
leaving her completely alone. She was sent to an orphanage,
• 1:20
but she hated it and eventually ran away, surviving by hiding
• 1:24
out in a Hollywood mall. So as you can see, malls are
• 1:28
kind of her thing. Her powers kept causing
• 1:31
problems. A mall security eventually hired
• 1:35
mutant hunters called the M Squad to capture her.
• 1:37
Jubilee fought back the best she could, but she was rescued by a
• 1:41
group of X-Men, Dazzler, Psylocke, Rogue and Storm, who
• 1:45
just so happened to be nearby. Curious and desperate for
• 1:48
somewhere to belong, Jubilee secretly followed them through a
• 1:51
portal to the X Men's hidden base in the Australian Outback.
• 1:55
At first, she survived by hiding in the shadows, stealing food,
• 1:58
borrowing clothes, and watching the X-Men from a distance.
• 2:02
Everything changed when she discovered Wolverine, brutally
• 2:04
tortured and left hanging on a cross, near death by the
• 2:08
Reavers. Jubilee freed him, helped nurse
• 2:11
him back to health, and from that moment on, the two formed
• 2:14
one of the strongest bonds in X-Men history.
• 2:17
Together, they fought through Hong Kong's criminal underworld,
• 2:20
battled the Mandarin in the hand, helped free Psylocke from
• 2:24
brainwashing when she was revealed to be Lady Mandarin.
• 2:27
Then she was transferred into an Asian body.
• 2:30
It was a whole thing and survived some of the deadliest
• 2:33
missions imaginable. I just want to say Psylocke's
• 2:36
back story. If you're confused about it, you
• 2:39
should be. I have a breakdown of Psylocke
• 2:42
explaining her background but it's just, it's a whole lot.
• 2:47
But she's a cool character so we like her.
• 2:49
Eventually, Jubilee officially joined the X-Men alongside
• 2:52
Storm, Gambit, Banshee, Forge, Shylock, and Wolverine.
• 2:56
Even though the team tried to protect her because of her age,
• 2:59
Jubilee constantly proved she could handle herself.
• 3:02
She fought enemies like Omega, Red, the Brood, Sentinel,
• 3:05
Sabretooth, the Scrolls, and Mojo, often saving lives with
• 3:10
quick thinking and sheer guts. Also a quick side note, I
• 3:14
absolutely hate Mojo. Like it's not like the oh he's a
• 3:17
bad guy I must dislike him but more in a way that if he was on
• 3:22
fire and I had a glass of water I'd drink it while keeping
• 3:26
direct eye contact with him. This has nothing to do with the
• 3:30
episode, I just feel like I want people to know that.
• 3:34
Anyways, her relationship with Wolverine became deeply
• 3:38
personal, part mentor, part father, daughter bond, giving
• 3:42
them both something they desperately needed.
• 3:45
Jubilee needed the guidance of a parent, and Wolverine needed the
• 3:49
feeling of being a father to a child.
• 3:51
The duo teamed up to fight Saber Tooth, Omega, Red, Sauron,
• 3:55
Sentinels, and even sought revenge on Reno and Molokai, who
• 4:00
Jubes believed had murdered her parents.
• 4:03
Oh Jubes. Overtime, Jubilee became close
• 4:07
to Professor X, Kitty Pride and Ileana Rasputina, who is Magic,
• 4:12
whose death from the Legacy virus devastated her.
• 4:16
She also endured Wolverine, leaving the X-Men, terrifying
• 4:20
accounts with Sabretooth inside the mansion and the Phalanx
• 4:24
Crisis where she teamed up with the unlikely allies like Emma
• 4:28
Frost and even Sabretooth himself just to survive.
• 4:32
Looking for a fresh start, Jubilee joined Generation XA
• 4:35
younger mutant team led by Banshee and Emma Frost.
• 4:38
There, she became a leader in her own right, helping train
• 4:40
younger mutants while fighting threats like Mplate, Bastion,
• 4:44
Omegaret Again, and Juggernaut. During Operation 0 Tolerance,
• 4:48
she was kidnapped and tortured by Bastion, but still resisted
• 4:52
giving up information on the X-Men.
• 4:55
She even escaped on her own before eventually being rescued
• 4:58
by Wolverine. One of the most personal moments
• 5:03
in Jubilee's life came when she finally uncovered the truth
• 5:06
about her parents death, tracking down their killer, who
• 5:09
was Hunter Braun. She nearly lost control of her
• 5:12
powers and rage, but ultimately chose not to kill him, but did
• 5:16
make sure to destroy his operation instead and letting
• 5:19
justice take its course. After Generation X disbanded,
• 5:24
Jubilee tried to build a normal life in Los Angeles, briefly
• 5:27
chasing acting before joining Banshee's ex Cor O.
• 5:31
She's been on a sheet in her history.
• 5:34
She's been a whole bunch of teams.
• 5:35
She's just been all over them, which is fine, but tragedy KET
• 5:40
following her. Her close friend Skin was
• 5:43
murdered by the Anti mutant Church of humanity, pushing
• 5:47
  Jubilee into another emotional spiral.
• 5:50
She later reunited with Wolverine, lived with her Aunt
• 5:54
Hope for a while and tried finding something that at least
• 5:57
resembled stability again. Then came House of M Scarlet
• 6:03
Witch's reality warp stripped Jubilee of her mutant powers
• 6:07
  entirely. Suddenly, she wasn't just
• 6:10
struggling emotionally, she was no longer even considering
• 6:13
herself a mutant. Still, she kept fighting,
• 6:16
becoming a political activist and later was invited by Night
• 6:19
Thrasher to join the New Warriors under the identity
• 6:22
Wondra, using advanced tech to stay in the game.
• 6:26
Also DU Powered Chamber also joined the New Warriors as
• 6:30
Wandra Jubilee became tougher, more hardened, and stepped into
• 6:34
a real leadership role as she became Night Thrashers, second
• 6:38
in command while battling villains and surviving deadly
• 6:41
missions that nearly destroyed the team.
• 6:43
Eventually, Jubilee returned to the X-Men life just in time for
• 6:47
another nightmare. She was infected with vampire
• 6:49
blood during a vampire attack in the San Francisco.
• 6:53
Turned fully into a vampire by Dracula Sanzeris, Jubilee even
• 6:57
helped lead an assault against the X-Men before eventually
• 7:01
being freed from his control. She then joined the Forgiven, a
• 7:04
group of vampires that taught her how to move past her
• 7:07
constant need to feed on blood and also how to move during the
• 7:11
day. Later, while trying to rebuild
• 7:15
her life, Jubilee discovered a baby boy alone in Budapest.
• 7:18
She named him Shogo and brought him back to the Jean Grey
• 7:22
School, where she reunited with her X-Men teams, including
• 7:26
principal members like Storm, Psylocke, Rachel Summers, Kitty
• 7:30
Pride and Rogue. Jubilee was field leader when
• 7:34
she and the X-Men teammates Pixie, Hellion, Mercury, Bling
• 7:38
Karima and Cypher fought Sentinels on Santa Catalina
• 7:42
Island. Some time later, Storm informed
• 7:44
her that the adoption papers had gone through legally, making
• 7:48
Jubilee the mother of Shogo. Now being a mother of Shogo,
• 7:52
Jubes found a new purpose in life outside of fighting the end
• 7:55
war. Even after becoming a mother to
• 7:58
show GOAT, Jubilee stepped into a mentor role at Xavier's,
• 8:02
assuring Kitty Pride she was ready to help guide the next
• 8:06
generation of mutants. Helping her was John O Starsmore
• 8:10
AKA Chamber. You may remember him from as her
• 8:13
former teammate from Generation X and the New Warriors.
• 8:16
The two reunited while dealing with a dangerous crisis
• 8:19
involving Monet St. Croix, who had emerged with her
• 8:23
brother Emplate and secretly attacking students to drain
• 8:27
their life energy. After driving her off, Jubilee
• 8:30
and Chamber began patrols and enforcing curfews to protect the
• 8:34
  school. Spending time together during
• 8:36
these late night rounds, along with her caring for Shogo and
• 8:39
the students brought them very close, and the two eventually
• 8:43
started a relationship. When Monet attacked again in
• 8:47
broad daylight, she ripped away Jubilee Sunlight Protection
• 8:50
Medallion and threw her from her window.
• 8:52
Quinton Choir stepped up in the last second, sacrificing a
• 8:56
fragment of the Phoenix Force to cure Jubilee's vampirism and
• 8:59
restore her original mutant powers, allowing her to fight
• 9:03
back and save her students. And just so we're all aware,
• 9:06
this was like one of the only times Quinton Choir has done
• 9:12
something kind without any selfishness attached to it, so
• 9:20
would let let us live up on that.
• 9:23
After all that, Jubes found herself in yet another strange
• 9:26
situation and Nate Gray's warped reality where everyone was a
• 9:31
mutant and relationships were basically forbidden.
• 9:33
Jubilee worked for Department XA mutant police force that haunted
• 9:38
down love criminals. Things got complicated when
• 9:42
Jubilee helped track down Luke and Nizumi Sen only to discover
• 9:46
Nizumi was pregnant, something almost unheard of in that world
• 9:51
because remember, relationships are forbidden and there are such
• 9:56
things called love criminals, so her being pregnant makes no
• 10:01
sense. Later, Jubilee found out Nizumi
• 10:05
had been chained up and abused in Department X's basement,
• 10:08
which deeply shook her and she did not stand for it.
• 10:12
After Nizumi escaped and gave birth on her own, she confronted
• 10:16
Jubilee with her newborn baby. Seeing the child reminded
• 10:19
Jubilee of Shogo, and she immediately switched sides.
• 10:22
She helped Nizumi care for the baby, stole supplies and money
• 10:25
for her to escape, and helped her disappear to safety, fully
• 10:30
realizing the world they were living in was completely broken.
• 10:34
Later in the mainstream timeline, Jubilee reunited with
• 10:37
Shogo, who had been looked after by Chamber and Karma during the
• 10:41
celebration of Mutant Nation of Krakoa.
• 10:43
Not long after, she joined the new version of Excalibur.
• 10:47
Jubilee was later among the mutants killed during Orcas and
• 10:50
Nimrod's massacre at the Hellfire Gala, but she was
• 10:53
eventually resurrected by Askani in the White Hot Room.
• 10:56
Where is she now, you ask? She is sitting pretty at the
• 10:59
Haven House in Louisiana as a part of Rogue's X-Men team.
• 11:03
She's accompanied by Nightcrawler, Rogue, Gambit,
• 11:06
Wolverine, and the Outliers. They've gone through these
• 11:09
strangers of situations, come together as a team and as
• 11:13
mentors to the outliers, and has shown time and time again that
• 11:16
the X-Men do not quit on each other.
• 11:18
In her life as a mutant, Jubilee has gone through the biggest and
• 11:22
most tragic occurrences, but also the most wonderful ones.
• 11:27
Jubilee evolved from a reckless runaway to a mentor, a teacher,
• 11:31
a protector for the next generation of mutants.
• 11:34
She rejoined her old friends, rebuilt relationships, even
• 11:38
regained her original mutant powers after being cured A
• 11:41
vampirism through every version of her life.
• 11:44
Orphan, runaway, X-Men, vampire teacher, leader, Mother.
• 11:49
Jubilee never stopped fighting for the people she cared about.
• 11:52
And honestly, that's what makes Jubilee special.
• 11:54
She was never the strongest mutant in the room.
• 11:57
She knew that she didn't have God tier powers or cosmic
• 12:01
importance, but no matter how much lost trauma or chaos hit
• 12:05
her, she kept getting back up. Still sarcastic, still loyal,
• 12:10
still throwing fireworks in the dark when everyone else thought
• 12:13
the fight was over. So that is Jubilee.
• 12:16
Jubilation Lee She is. I'd say she's a pretty iconic
• 12:21
character. I like her in the comics.
• 12:24
I really hate her in the shows. Like I cannot stand Jubilee in
• 12:29
X-Men, the animated series, I don't know what it is, she's so
• 12:32
irritating, but in the comics she's great.
• 12:36
And if you want to catch up on where Jubilee is these days,
• 12:40
check out GAIL Simone's The Uncanny X-Men run.
• 12:43
It is ongoing. It is fantastic, and it is
• 12:47
everything that I love about the X-Men.
• 12:50
So with that being said, I hope you enjoyed this episode.
• 12:53
I hope you'll like and subscribe, and I hope you have a
• 12:55
  marvelous day.
