Latest / A Chapter a Day Bible Reading / February 12 - Jude
Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 12th of
- 0:16February and I'm so glad to have your company as today we are
- 0:20going to be cracking open a brand new book of the Bible, the
- 0:24second last book in your Bible on your shelf or in your hot
- 0:28little hand. That is the book of Jude.
- 0:31And we are going to spend some time in this book finishing It's
- 0:35oh, today. Yeah.
- 0:36It's only 1 chapter long. It's a very short book.
- 0:39And Jude is a book that you probably have not spent a lot of
- 0:42time looking at. A lot of people say, you know,
- 0:45some of these letters just obscurely hidden in the back of
- 0:49the New Testament and you don't see them in any Bible study kind
- 0:53of syllabus or church reading plan.
- 0:56Aha. We have thwarted that trend,
- 0:58haven't we friends? Here we are reading this book of
- 1:00Jude. So who is this Jude character
- 1:03that we're hearing from? Well, Jude, you might remember
- 1:06Jesus brother named James, who was one of the leaders in the
- 1:10Jerusalem church. Well, Jude is another brother of
- 1:14Jesus. He is a little brother of James
- 1:17and Jesus and he is one of the leaders of this community.
- 1:22In fact, it's these siblings, these brothers of Jesus, who
- 1:26really did for generations lead the church in Jerusalem.
- 1:30In fact, it's one of Jude's grandsons who continues to lead
- 1:35the church years and years later.
- 1:37So these faithful men whose lives were turned upside down by
- 1:42their brother spent their lives in service of him and his legacy
- 1:47and the Kingdom that he showed them.
- 1:49Ah, just incredible. And so this book that he's
- 1:51writing, this letter that we're going to read today is written
- 1:54to this group of people who are confused because Paul wrote all
- 1:58these letters and in them he spoke about the Holy Spirit,
- 2:01inspiring people with the knowledge of truth.
- 2:04And so now some itinerant preachers are walking around the
- 2:07countryside spruiking their own message that may seem a little
- 2:11bit self centred because it is. And they're claiming this direct
- 2:16divine inspiration due to saying if some of these Bros come and
- 2:22start preaching to you and it doesn't sound right, that's
- 2:25because it isn't. And encouraging people to stay
- 2:28true to their core beliefs and not be swayed by people coming
- 2:32along and preaching things that are not based in the truth and
- 2:36that the Holy Spirit in fact did not reveal to them.
- 2:39So it is a good reminder for us that when we hear people with
- 2:43the myriad of voices that we hear today telling us things
- 2:46that don't quite stack up with what we know to be true about
- 2:49Jesus, that we can stay true to the faith that we know to be
- 2:53true. So let us read this
- 2:55encouragement today, friends, as we read together the book of
- 2:59Jude. This letter is from Jude, a
- 3:11slave of Jesus Christ and a brother of James.
- 3:15I am writing to all who have been called by God the Father,
- 3:19who loves you and keeps you safe in the care of Jesus Christ.
- 3:23May God give you more and more mercy, peace and love.
- 3:30Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about
- 3:34the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write
- 3:38about something else, urging you to defend the faith that God has
- 3:42entrusted once for all time to his holy people.
- 3:47I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way
- 3:52into your churches, saying that God's marvellous grace allows us
- 3:56to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people
- 4:01was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and
- 4:05Lord Jesus Christ. So I want to remind you, though
- 4:10you already know these things, that Jesus first rescued the
- 4:14nation of Israel from Egypt, but later he destroyed those who did
- 4:18not remain faithful. And I remind you of the angels
- 4:22who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave
- 4:25them, but left the place where they belonged.
- 4:28God has kept them securely chained in prisons of darkness,
- 4:33waiting for the great day of judgement.
- 4:36And don't forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbouring
- 4:39towns, which were filled with immorality of every kind of
- 4:43sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by
- 4:46fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God's
- 4:50judgement. In the same way, these people
- 4:54who claim authority from their dreams, live immoral lives, defy
- 5:00authority and scoff at supernatural beings.
- 5:03But even Michael, one of the mightiest of the angels, did not
- 5:07dare accuse the devil of blasphemy but simply said the
- 5:11Lord rebuke you. This took place when Michael was
- 5:14arguing with the devil about Moses body.
- 5:18But those people scoff at things they do not understand like
- 5:22unthinking animals. They do whatever their instincts
- 5:25tell them, and so they bring about their own destruction.
- 5:29What sorrow awaits them, for they follow in the footsteps of
- 5:34Cain, who killed his brother. Like Balaam, they deceive people
- 5:38for money, and like Cora, they perish in their rebellion.
- 5:43When these people eat with you in your fellowship meals
- 5:46commemorating the Lord's love, they are like dangerous reefs
- 5:50that can shipwreck you. They are like shameless
- 5:53shepherds who care only for themselves.
- 5:56They are like clouds blowing over the land without giving any
- 6:00rain. They are like trees in autumn
- 6:03that are doubly dead, for they bear no fruit and have been
- 6:08pulled up by the roots. They are like wild waves of the
- 6:12sea, turning up the foam of their shameful deeds.
- 6:16They are like wandering stars doomed forever to blackest
- 6:20darkness. Enoch, who lived in the 7th
- 6:24generation after Adam, prophesied about these people.
- 6:27He said, listen, the Lord is coming with countless thousands
- 6:31of His holy ones to execute judgement on the people of the
- 6:35world. He will convict every person of
- 6:38all the ungodly things they have done, and for all the insults
- 6:43that ungodly sinners have spoke against Him.
- 6:48These people are grumblers and complainers, living only to
- 6:51satisfy their desires. They brag loudly about
- 6:55themselves, and they flatter others to get what they want.
- 7:00But you, my dear friends, must remember what the apostles of
- 7:04our Lord Jesus Christ predicted. They told you that in the last
- 7:09times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to
- 7:13satisfy their ungodly desires. These people are the ones who
- 7:18are creating divisions among you.
- 7:21They follow their natural instincts because they do not
- 7:24have God's Spirit in them. But you, dear friends, must
- 7:29build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of
- 7:34the Holy Spirit, and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ,
- 7:38who will bring you eternal life. In this way you will keep
- 7:42yourselves safe in God's love, and you must show mercy to those
- 7:49whose faith is wavering. Rescue others by snatching them
- 7:53from the flames of judgement. Show mercy to still others, but
- 7:58do so with great caution, hating the sins that contaminate their
- 8:02lives. Now all glory to God who is able
- 8:08to keep you from falling away, and will bring you with great
- 8:12joy into His glorious presence without a single fault.
- 8:17All glory to Him who alone is God our Saviour, through Jesus
- 8:22Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power and
- 8:26authority are His before all time and in the present and
- 8:32beyond all time. Amen.
- 8:46Oh Lord, thank you that your message for us is just so
- 8:52wonderful and it doesn't need to be improved with falsehood, but
- 8:56that you bring us this gift of forgiveness and life and light
- 9:03and love and inclusion and transformation.
- 9:09But that means that we can't just indulge whatever it is that
- 9:13our desires tell us to, but that we are called to a different way
- 9:16of being. So Lord, when people try to
- 9:20convince us of things that we know are not of You, Lord, I
- 9:23pray that you hold us true to Your truth.
- 9:27Keep us in Your embrace, and help us to encourage each other
- 9:32to spur one another on in faith in You.
- 9:36Ah, let those be our words to each other, words of Your truth
- 9:40and Your encouragement and Your grace.
- 9:43And Lord, that even when we make mistakes and we mess up here,
- 9:48you assure us that you will present us without a single
- 9:53fault in God's glorious presence.
- 9:58Oh, you are the best, and we love you.
- 10:00And we pray all of this in your wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
