• 1:13
Speaker 2: Hi Catherine, Hi Chelsea. How's it going well.
• 1:17
Speaker 1: I'm still recovering from Vegas. I had a real quick turnaround.
• 1:20
Speaker 1: I did one of my shows this weekend for my residency.
• 1:23
Speaker 1: I had a lot of people come, a lot of friends.
• 1:26
Speaker 1: We went to dinner, then we went to my show.
• 1:29
Speaker 1: Really fun, working on all my new material for my
• 1:31
Speaker 1: new tour, and then we went and gambled. I won
• 1:35
Speaker 1: thirty five hundred dollars. I mean, I'm unstoppable, basically. I've
• 1:39
Speaker 1: also I'm betting on the super Bowl, so that's good.
• 1:42
  Speaker 2: Oh, she's a sports betting girly. Yeah, I'm bored. I'm
• 1:44
Speaker 2: betting with sports. Yeah. Me and my new friend are
• 1:46
  Speaker 2: betting a lot.
• 1:47
Speaker 1: He's a gambler, so I've just decided to join his
• 1:49
  Speaker 1: gambling addiction.
• 1:50
Speaker 2: And I'm into it. As long as you keep winning,
• 1:53
  Speaker 2: it's great.
• 1:53
Speaker 1: But I had a six am flight out of Vegas,
• 1:57
Speaker 1: so I got home at one point thirty and then
• 1:59
Speaker 1: at four I was like, guys, I don't know that
• 2:01
Speaker 1: I'm gonna make this flight. I said to my assistance,
• 2:04
Speaker 1: I'm like you guys, so you know have a backup one,
• 2:06
Speaker 1: but I don't like spending the day in Vegas, and
• 2:08
Speaker 1: the next direct flight back to Vancouver was at four
• 2:10
Speaker 1: forty five, so I went to bed at one thirty,
• 2:13
Speaker 1: woke up at four point thirty to make my six
• 2:15
Speaker 1: thirty flight, six fifteen flight out of Vegas to Vancouver.
• 2:18
Speaker 1: I was drunk at the airport. I was a mess.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: I got to Vancouver. I spent the entire time looking
• 2:24
Speaker 1: at ridiculous videos of the people that trend where people
• 2:28
Speaker 1: call their parents and say the police are coming following
• 2:31
Speaker 1: them back to their house because they told them their
• 2:33
Speaker 1: parents had fallen, so that when they get home to
• 2:35
Speaker 1: their house, their parents have to be on the ground
• 2:37
Speaker 1: acting like they felt down the stairs. I mean, I
• 2:40
Speaker 1: was laughing so hard on the flight. I was so delirious.
• 2:44
Speaker 1: I finally sobered up. I got to Vancouver. I get
• 2:47
Speaker 1: off the plane and I forget I had a tote
• 2:50
Speaker 1: bag because Carlos brings all my stuff from LA so
• 2:52
  Speaker 1: I don't have to travel with a lot. But I
• 2:54
Speaker 1: forgot my tote bag, which had my computer, like all
• 2:56
  Speaker 1: my stuff.
• 2:57
Speaker 2: I left it in the overhead. Been just completely forgot.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: I hadn't even had bags yeah, walked all the way
• 3:02
Speaker 1: to customs and this woman is like.
• 3:04
Speaker 2: Miss miss you left your bag in the overhead been
• 3:08
Speaker 2: and she was another passenger. Oh my god, who ever
• 3:11
Speaker 2: pays attention? And she didn't recognize me because she didn't
• 3:14
Speaker 2: say miss handler. Yes, yeah she didn't. She was just like,
• 3:17
Speaker 2: miss I brought this for you, you left me.
• 3:19
Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh my god, I'm like, who pays
• 3:21
Speaker 1: attention to other people's luggage? Like I don't pay attention
• 3:25
Speaker 1: to who's putting what in the overhead bit it was
• 3:28
  Speaker 1: real nice.
• 3:28
Speaker 2: I'm like, thank you so much. I mean it was Yeah,
• 3:31
Speaker 2: that was stories of faith in humanity. I know, I know,
• 3:34
  Speaker 2: I know. I'm a lucky girl.
• 3:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, I do have to ask you, what do
• 3:38
Speaker 3: you think about all this Beckham drama?
• 3:39
Speaker 2: Are you keeping up on this a little bit about
• 3:42
Speaker 2: Victoria Beckham and the kids?
• 3:45
Speaker 1: I mean, I don't really know anything about them, but
• 3:47
Speaker 1: it tracks from what I do know, it does.
• 3:49
  Speaker 2: It sounds plausible.
• 3:52
Speaker 3: I feel like there's probably bad behavior on both sides.
• 3:54
Speaker 3: But I feel like the big red flag is that
• 3:57
Speaker 3: the like son and daughter in law just had like
• 3:59
Speaker 3: they renew their vows already, like they had a vow renewal.
• 4:02
Speaker 3: I'm like, when you have to do that a year
• 4:03
Speaker 3: or two in, Yeah, I think it's curtains. Yeah, it's
• 4:06
Speaker 3: a bad sign. I think, yeah, you're probably right about that. Yeah,
• 4:10
  Speaker 3: I don't know.
• 4:11
  Speaker 2: I don't know.
• 4:11
Speaker 1: I don't find that much interest in the and that
• 4:13
Speaker 1: and that story. But I mean, yeah, it's kind of.
• 4:16
Speaker 2: I just like people airing their dirty laundry that I
• 4:18
  Speaker 2: find out.
• 4:18
Speaker 1: What about the Blake Lively and Taylor Swift messages and
• 4:21
Speaker 1: all the what not? Even first of all, Taylor Swift
• 4:24
Speaker 1: comes out looking awesome once again. Of course, Blake Lively
• 4:28
Speaker 1: and Ryan Rednells like, oh my god, so embarrassing to
• 4:33
Speaker 1: have all of those texts and voice memos released.
• 4:36
  Speaker 2: It's so embarrassing.
• 4:38
Speaker 3: Can you imagine every random thing you texted your front
• 4:41
Speaker 3: no way, no way.
• 4:42
Speaker 1: God is just like stop it. Those two must be
• 4:45
Speaker 1: like under a curtain somewhere and like stop, make this
• 4:48
  Speaker 1: go away.
• 4:49
Speaker 3: They didn't get the Oprah advice of like imagine it
• 4:52
Speaker 3: on the front page of the New York Times, like
• 4:54
  Speaker 3: whatever you're.
• 4:54
Speaker 1: Sending it a text or you think about that when
• 4:56
Speaker 1: I text people anything, I'm like, does you imagine this
• 4:58
Speaker 1: is going to be public at some point, because it
• 5:00
  Speaker 1: probably will well.
• 5:02
Speaker 2: Our guest today is going to the Olympics.
• 5:05
Speaker 1: I know, yes, you guys, the Olympics are happening. Today's
• 5:08
Speaker 1: guest is a world champion and Olympic he's so funny too,
• 5:11
Speaker 1: and an Olympic snowboarder, entrepreneur, philanthropists. He's won two Olympic medals,
• 5:16
Speaker 1: ten X game medals, five World half Pipe Championship gold medals,
• 5:21
Speaker 1: and he's headed to try and snag the gold this
• 5:23
Speaker 1: month at the Olympics in Milan Courtina. His new documentary
• 5:28
Speaker 1: is called pipe Dream. It's on Netflix now, so please
• 5:31
Speaker 1: welcome Scottie James. Scottie James, Welcome to Dear Chelsea.
• 5:36
Speaker 4: Hi, Hi, thank you for having me.
• 5:38
Speaker 1: Thanks for taking the time to catch up during your
• 5:41
Speaker 1: season with the Olympics about to happen.
• 5:44
Speaker 2: You're having an incredible season.
• 5:45
Speaker 1: I know you just won again in Switzerland, so congrats
• 5:48
  Speaker 1: on that.
• 5:50
Speaker 4: How are you feeling, I'm feeling good. Look, we needed
• 5:53
Speaker 4: to catch up Chelsea before the Olympics. We know we're
• 5:56
Speaker 4: approaching closely, so I just needed your inside before we
• 6:00
Speaker 4: head over to Italy. But so far the season's been
• 6:04
Speaker 4: been great. But now I'm feeling really good and yeah,
• 6:07
Speaker 4: and naturally, obviously getting and went under the belt this
• 6:09
Speaker 4: time of year is a good confidence boost. So yeah,
• 6:12
Speaker 4: looking forward to the rest of the season.
• 6:14
Speaker 2: I want to know all of it.
• 6:15
Speaker 1: I want to know how what your process is, how
• 6:18
Speaker 1: you maintain what you do before you race. I mean, listen,
• 6:23
Speaker 1: your favorite to win gold at the Olympics this year,
• 6:25
Speaker 1: so no pressure. You are a snowboarder, so I take
• 6:28
Speaker 1: issue with that because we're going to have to discuss
• 6:30
Speaker 1: that etiquette as well. The only two times I've been
• 6:32
Speaker 1: hit on a ski mountain are by snowboarders, two snowboarders,
• 6:36
Speaker 1: and one happened the other day too. But first of all, okay,
• 6:39
Speaker 1: let's talk gold at the Olympics and Milan Courtina. So
• 6:43
Speaker 1: tell me how you're feeling about it, How you look
• 6:45
Speaker 1: at things like this, What do you do with the
• 6:47
Speaker 1: pressure that is put upon you by being so good.
• 6:50
Speaker 4: At what you do? Yeah, I mean, naturally, coming into
• 6:53
Speaker 4: this games, it's you know, you feel that pressure. I
• 6:56
Speaker 4: think there's always the pressure you put on yourself, but
• 6:59
Speaker 4: then you know, there's all this exterior pressure that people
• 7:02
Speaker 4: put on you to want to they want you to
• 7:04
Speaker 4: show up and deliver maybe the result that they expect,
• 7:07
Speaker 4: and that's from the fans to your country that you're representing,
• 7:10
Speaker 4: and I think most importantly more so myself. I think
• 7:14
Speaker 4: I do go into every event with the intent to
• 7:17
Speaker 4: want to do my best and put my best foot
• 7:19
Speaker 4: forward to win, and that's the approach with the Games.
• 7:23
Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean when you're out there wearing your
• 7:25
Speaker 4: country colors and you're flat flying the flag and there's
• 7:28
Speaker 4: obviously a lot more attention, you know, you feel that
• 7:32
Speaker 4: pressure a bit more. But I mean it's my fifth
• 7:35
Speaker 4: go around now, so from the pressure perspective, but also experience,
• 7:39
Speaker 4: I feel a little bit more vintage, which is a
• 7:42
Speaker 4: good thing I think in this case. So I'm no
• 7:46
Speaker 4: to be honest, I'm really excited. I feel like I've
• 7:48
Speaker 4: had a great preparation and the leadup's been awesome. So
• 7:52
Speaker 4: I just have to focus on the important things like
• 7:55
Speaker 4: fundamentals and making sure that I'm prepared from a practical
• 7:59
Speaker 4: stamp point snowboarding and the rest will we'll do what
• 8:03
  Speaker 4: it will do.
• 8:04
Speaker 1: And what happens the day of what happens the day
• 8:06
Speaker 1: of a big competition, Like are you superstitious?
• 8:09
Speaker 2: What is your regimen? What is your ritual.
• 8:12
Speaker 4: I don't have too many rituals. I necessarily do before
• 8:16
Speaker 4: the event, but I always wear my red gloves in
• 8:18
  Speaker 4: the events, Like I guess that's a ritual. It's something
• 8:21
Speaker 4: that I always have. I listened to a lot of
• 8:23
Speaker 4: music actually when I'm training and competing as well, No
• 8:26
Speaker 4: specific artists, just depends how I'm feeling on.
• 8:29
Speaker 2: The day, elevator music. Wait, what's with the red gloves?
• 8:32
Speaker 2: Where did those come from? Is that to remind people
• 8:34
  Speaker 2: that you're a redhead?
• 8:35
Speaker 4: Exactly? Yeah, yeah, just because you know, I got so
• 8:38
Speaker 4: much equipment on and you know, it's hard to see
• 8:40
Speaker 4: the red hair sometimes. But now, in two thousand and seventeen,
• 8:45
Speaker 4: I want to say, I won my first X Games
• 8:47
Speaker 4: gold medal and I'd come from another event in Switzerland
• 8:51
Speaker 4: and I saw these red gloves, which a brand at
• 8:54
Speaker 4: the time had sent me in. Anyway, I put the
• 8:56
Speaker 4: gloves on, and I felt like I was coming out
• 8:59
Speaker 4: to fight a bit that week, a bit of strength
• 9:01
Speaker 4: and adversity, and I won the event and it was
• 9:04
Speaker 4: obviously a huge market event for us, and ever since
• 9:07
Speaker 4: then it's been my thing. I always wear my red gloves,
• 9:10
Speaker 4: so it's been a fun little narrative.
• 9:13
Speaker 2: Oh, I like that.
• 9:14
Speaker 1: There was just a gambling movie that I watched with
• 9:16
Speaker 1: Colin Farrell where he wore gloves while he gambled, but
• 9:20
Speaker 1: he lost all the time. And I'm like, how does
• 9:22
Speaker 1: superstitions maintain when they don't work.
• 9:24
Speaker 2: A lot of the time, you know what I mean?
• 9:25
Speaker 1: When people are like, I've got to do it this way,
• 9:27
Speaker 1: I've got to do it, and it's like it's not
• 9:28
Speaker 1: working for you, so stop doing that.
• 9:30
Speaker 4: He doesn't have the right gloves on your calling some
• 9:33
  Speaker 4: of the red.
• 9:33
Speaker 2: Onesah, how many pairs of red gloves do you have?
• 9:36
Speaker 4: By the way, many many? Well, we make our own gloves,
• 9:40
Speaker 4: we sell them. But you know I also have I
• 9:43
Speaker 4: mean through a season, I actually don't use that many.
• 9:46
Speaker 4: Like one pair. They're pretty durable and good. But yeah,
• 9:50
Speaker 4: in a season, I try and keep one pair because
• 9:52
Speaker 4: when I wear one pair, it's a bit superstitious. Like
• 9:56
Speaker 4: I'm like, I got to keep wearing them, particularly if
• 9:59
  Speaker 4: it's a good season.
• 10:00
Speaker 1: So yeah, And so I know you're friends with Sean Waite.
• 10:03
Speaker 1: You guys are buddies, right, You competed a lot together
• 10:06
  Speaker 1: and now you've you've surpassed him. I mean you're the
• 10:08
Speaker 1: greatest snowboarder of all time as we sit here today.
• 10:11
Speaker 1: So how does that impact your relationship? Because I know
• 10:14
Speaker 1: how insecure he is.
• 10:15
  Speaker 4: I'm just kidding.
• 10:16
Speaker 2: I do know how insecure he is.
• 10:18
Speaker 4: So but we all are, We all are, That's very true. Well,
• 10:22
Speaker 4: if you look hard enough, everyone's got one, that's right.
• 10:25
Speaker 4: I think we have a good relationship. Actually, I think
• 10:28
Speaker 4: naturally evolved over time because you know, I was a
• 10:31
Speaker 4: little kid, put him on a pedestal and you know,
• 10:34
Speaker 4: as a hero, and yeah, naturally, you know, with respect
• 10:37
Speaker 4: the Shawn, he's one of the greats in my discipline.
• 10:40
Speaker 4: So always looked up to him, and from when I
• 10:43
Speaker 4: was a kid to watching to I guess to try
• 10:47
Speaker 4: and emulate the kind of success he had in the career,
• 10:50
Speaker 4: and then being able to do that in my own way,
• 10:52
Speaker 4: and then us building a relationship on the mountain. Obviously competitors.
• 10:57
Speaker 4: We both wore our heart on our sleeves at times.
• 10:59
Speaker 4: There's ten to them, him retiring and now you know,
• 11:02
Speaker 4: we text and we have a good relationship. So yeah,
• 11:05
Speaker 4: it's been a fun journey, I guess, to say the least.
• 11:08
Speaker 4: But yeah, I have a lot of respect for him.
• 11:10
Speaker 4: I think he's been amazing on the hill.
• 11:12
Speaker 1: I want to know more about what you guys do
• 11:14
Speaker 1: when you What do you do when you when when
• 11:16
  Speaker 1: you win?
• 11:16
Speaker 2: How do you celebrate?
• 11:17
Speaker 1: Because I was talking to Mikaela Schiffrin and she just
• 11:20
Speaker 1: like found out about Champagne a year ago, and I'm like, sister,
• 11:23
Speaker 1: what is the point of winning all of these and
• 11:25
Speaker 1: being on all these podiums and winning all of these
• 11:28
Speaker 1: races if you don't know how to celebrate. She's like,
• 11:31
Speaker 1: it just never occurred to us. She's like, I didn't
• 11:33
Speaker 1: even know. And then once I think she celebrated once,
• 11:36
Speaker 1: she's like, oh wait, wait, wait, this is actually a
• 11:37
  Speaker 1: really good time.
• 11:38
Speaker 2: We should do this more often.
• 11:40
Speaker 4: Well, unlike Mikayla Shifferin and Chelsea, you be very proud
• 11:44
Speaker 4: of me. I discovered the Champagne celebrations a little while ago.
• 11:48
Speaker 2: So you're Australian, so I do believe you. I do
• 11:50
Speaker 2: believe you. The only people who drink more than Americans
• 11:53
Speaker 2: are Australians, so I get it. Exactly where did you
• 11:56
Speaker 2: grow up in Australia.
• 11:57
Speaker 4: I grew up in a little town about forty five.
• 12:00
Speaker 4: I mean it's out of Melbourne. The city called Warrem Knighte.
• 12:04
Speaker 4: So it's a tongue twister that you can try and
• 12:06
Speaker 4: say it Warren Knight.
• 12:07
Speaker 2: Warren Date. Okay, I tried it and it worked. So
• 12:11
Speaker 2: it's a huge six. Get a bottle of champagne.
• 12:13
Speaker 4: Hold on one second, You're allowed to enter our local pub.
• 12:16
Speaker 4: It's like, you know, it's the right of passage if
• 12:18
Speaker 4: you can say Warren Ntte. So yeah, no, little town
• 12:21
Speaker 4: and my family still live there and I've got a
• 12:24
Speaker 4: house not far from there.
• 12:25
Speaker 1: So yeah, and so how does one get into snowboarding?
• 12:28
Speaker 1: I know a lot of skiing happens in Australia. People
• 12:31
  Speaker 1: come over here.
• 12:32
  Speaker 2: I love.
• 12:33
Speaker 1: I'm in Whistler, Canada right now and where this mountain
• 12:35
Speaker 1: is filled with ausie.
• 12:36
Speaker 2: So how did you start in? Like what age? You're
• 12:39
Speaker 2: like three years old?
• 12:40
Speaker 4: Right? Yeah, I was really young when I started. I
• 12:43
Speaker 4: don't even remember the first day, the first day I
• 12:46
Speaker 4: went on the hill first time. I kind of remember snowboarding.
• 12:49
Speaker 4: I would have been probably seven or eight years old,
• 12:51
Speaker 4: maybe ten, but i'd started. Yeah, when I was three.
• 12:55
Speaker 4: At least I was on skis I think for a
• 12:57
Speaker 4: little bit, which is a bit controversial, but transferred over
• 13:01
Speaker 4: to snowboarding. Yeah we I mean in Australia, we do
• 13:05
Speaker 4: have mountains, we have snowy mountains.
• 13:07
  Speaker 5: You know.
• 13:08
Speaker 4: My local resort in Australia's Threadbos. So we we just
• 13:12
Speaker 4: don't have a long season, so we were always having
• 13:15
Speaker 4: to travel overseas. I actually spent a lot of time
• 13:17
Speaker 4: in Canada and BC. We just got a mountain called
• 13:19
Speaker 4: Big White. I went to Whistler. Yeah, yeah, we loved
• 13:22
Speaker 4: it over there. So my family weren't your typical Aussie
• 13:26
Speaker 4: family playing tennis, to going to the beach or doing
• 13:29
Speaker 4: you know those summer sports that most Australians do. We
• 13:33
Speaker 4: were chasing the winter so it's fun.
• 13:36
Speaker 1: And so at what age did you go okay, this
• 13:38
Speaker 1: is going to be I want to know how something
• 13:40
Speaker 1: like this happens when you start so early, Like what
• 13:42
Speaker 1: percentage of your parents' encouragement was it, what percentage passion
• 13:46
Speaker 1: was it? Like what's the ratio of how things started
• 13:49
Speaker 1: to get serious for.
• 13:51
Speaker 4: You in this sport. I would say I think others
• 13:54
Speaker 4: made that decision for me, because you know, so young,
• 13:57
Speaker 4: you don't really snowboarding. Such a young demograph we have.
• 14:01
Speaker 4: You know, I'm now thirty one and I'm competing against
• 14:03
Speaker 4: eighteen year olds, and even before that, if you're you know,
• 14:06
Speaker 4: extraordinary talent, you're sixteen and you know you're competing with
• 14:10
Speaker 4: the men. So it's you do have to start young
• 14:13
Speaker 4: and get good young so you can start to repel
• 14:17
Speaker 4: yourself into the career. So I really don't think I
• 14:20
Speaker 4: realized that it was a professional career or something that
• 14:24
Speaker 4: I would comprehend until I was about thirteen or twelve
• 14:28
Speaker 4: or thirteen years old. But before that, you know, even
• 14:32
Speaker 4: now speaking to my parents, they had to kind of
• 14:34
Speaker 4: realize that dream for me. It is something that I
• 14:37
Speaker 4: obviously wanted to do, but they had to create the
• 14:40
Speaker 4: pathway for me from when I was, you know, seven
• 14:43
Speaker 4: or eight years old. I obviously had no awareness of that.
• 14:47
Speaker 4: I was just up on the mountain enjoying what I
• 14:49
Speaker 4: was doing and having fun and I still do that,
• 14:51
Speaker 4: but they were, you know, creating that avenue for me
• 14:54
Speaker 4: if it's something that I really wanted to do down
• 14:57
Speaker 4: the line. So that point would have been, I would
• 15:00
Speaker 4: say twelve eleven or twelve years old was when I
• 15:02
Speaker 4: was like, okay, I want to take that leap into
• 15:05
Speaker 4: realizing this as a potential profession.
• 15:08
Speaker 1: Because you're one of you're the youngest of four kids. Yeah, yeah,
• 15:11
Speaker 1: and so are you. Were you the only one in
• 15:13
Speaker 1: your family that got that passionate about sport?
• 15:16
Speaker 4: Yeah, youngest in my family of four, the most spoilt one.
• 15:20
Speaker 4: Apparently in the midst too.
• 15:21
Speaker 1: I'm the youngest of sex and it's the best position
• 15:23
  Speaker 1: to be in.
• 15:24
Speaker 2: The youngest is the best.
• 15:25
Speaker 4: I mean, Chelsea, look at us, we're the best. I mean,
• 15:28
Speaker 4: it just is what it is, you know, but not
• 15:30
Speaker 4: I think it was ten or eleven. I propelled myself
• 15:34
  Speaker 4: into it.
• 15:34
Speaker 3: I have a question about like, as your body is
• 15:37
Speaker 3: changing when you're starting that young. I know, you're pretty
• 15:40
Speaker 3: tall for a snowboarder, Like you're starting with one center
• 15:43
Speaker 3: of gravity, and you know, growing into a very different
• 15:47
  Speaker 3: shaped human.
• 15:48
Speaker 2: What was that like and were there struggles with that?
• 15:51
  Speaker 4: Absolutely? Yeah, I would. I would say I'm a very
• 15:54
Speaker 4: differently shaped human up there on the mountain.
• 15:57
Speaker 1: Did you try to stunt your growth so it could
• 15:59
Speaker 1: be a little bit more operational for you? I guess
• 16:01
Speaker 1: it's not really having that much of an impact for you.
• 16:04
Speaker 1: So if you were shorter, who knows if you'd be
• 16:05
Speaker 1: able to accomplish all.
• 16:06
  Speaker 2: Of these things.
• 16:08
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it might have helped, and maybe my
• 16:11
Speaker 4: parents looked into that They're like, oh boy, how are
• 16:13
Speaker 4: we going to stop this growth thing from happening? But no,
• 16:16
Speaker 4: it's yeah. I mean a lot of my competitors are
• 16:18
Speaker 4: five four five three six foot two, so it's a
• 16:22
Speaker 4: it's a significant difference, And where that can be challenging is,
• 16:26
Speaker 4: without getting into too much snowboarding lingo, the half pipe,
• 16:31
Speaker 4: the walls twenty two foot high, and typically when you're
• 16:33
Speaker 4: riding up the wall, you're hitting a lot of g force.
• 16:35
Speaker 4: So when you have a lower center of gravity, you
• 16:37
Speaker 4: naturally don't have as much force pulling you down into
• 16:40
Speaker 4: the ground, and you can kind of just you're just
• 16:43
Speaker 4: a little bit more in control. You have a bit
• 16:45
Speaker 4: more awareness of your your surroundings. And for me, sometimes
• 16:49
Speaker 4: I feel a little bit like Bamby, like my limbs
• 16:51
Speaker 4: are flying every direction and I'm trying to pull them
• 16:54
Speaker 4: back in. So I'm compact like the other guys, but
• 16:57
Speaker 4: you know, naturally I also have some benefits whereas I'm
• 17:01
Speaker 4: a bit heavier. So when it's snowing, we know we're
• 17:03
Speaker 4: in an unpredictable profession where it snows, when there's a
• 17:07
Speaker 4: lot of variables in those conditions, I'm a bit heavier,
• 17:11
Speaker 4: so I can carry more speed. Amplitude is a big
• 17:13
Speaker 4: criteria in our sport, so it can be also beneficial,
• 17:17
Speaker 4: So I like to focus on the positives, I guess,
• 17:20
Speaker 4: but it is a very big difference.
• 17:23
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 17:23
Speaker 1: Yeah, And you're married to your wife, says she's your
• 17:26
Speaker 1: Your wife name is Chloe, she says, she's the CEO
• 17:28
Speaker 1: of your life. She's an heiress to the Aston Martin fortune.
• 17:31
Speaker 1: So you're basically a kept man by your wife. So
• 17:34
Speaker 1: how does that feel as a professional athlete?
• 17:37
Speaker 4: Yep, she's the CEO of Scutty James, as she says,
• 17:41
Speaker 4: and she keeps the trains on the tracks.
• 17:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, how did you lock that down? Scudy?
• 17:46
Speaker 4: Well, I mean, should we go down the whole the
• 17:48
Speaker 4: whole story? She always says, I don't tell the story
• 17:51
Speaker 4: in detail, but today I can make the exception of
• 17:53
  Speaker 4: doing that.
• 17:54
  Speaker 2: Absolutely.
• 17:55
Speaker 1: We have a lot of female listeners, so they definitely
• 17:57
  Speaker 1: want the details.
• 17:58
Speaker 4: So yeah, gotcha. Okay, Well, I explained it in my
• 18:02
Speaker 4: wedding speeches, me being Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City,
• 18:05
Speaker 4: and I was in New York City walking down one
• 18:09
Speaker 4: of the streets in New York and I was thinking,
• 18:11
Speaker 4: you know, maybe tonight's the night my love story is
• 18:13
Speaker 4: about to begin. And I was playing that that audio
• 18:16
Speaker 4: in my head. Walked to a restaurant called Motel Morris
• 18:20
Speaker 4: in New York City. It's on the corner of I
• 18:22
Speaker 4: wan't say seventh and eighteenth, but I could be wrong.
• 18:25
Speaker 4: We got to the restaurant, I met Chloe. I knew
• 18:28
Speaker 4: her brother actually before I met Chloe connected us and
• 18:32
Speaker 4: sure enough here we are married with a little little
• 18:35
Speaker 4: guy as well, and I'm still friends with her brother.
• 18:38
Speaker 1: So so what was your move? What did you say
• 18:41
Speaker 1: to her? When did you know that you liked her?
• 18:43
Speaker 1: And then how did you follow up on it?
• 18:45
  Speaker 4: M I mean, I think initially she was probably a
• 18:50
Speaker 4: bit skeptical, had a very similar experience as yourself with snowboarders.
• 18:56
Speaker 4: Her dad frankly didn't like the idea of a snowboarder.
• 19:00
Speaker 4: Apparently when she was younger, she was also run over
• 19:03
Speaker 4: by a snowboarder, so off to a bad start before
• 19:06
Speaker 4: I even walked into the restaurant, so approval from dad
• 19:09
Speaker 4: was like big no, no, snowboarder. Naturally, over time, the
• 19:14
Speaker 4: accent played a bit of a role and you know,
• 19:17
Speaker 4: we both shared a couple of bottles of wine and
• 19:20
  Speaker 4: that helps.
• 19:22
Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, okay, that does help. The accent also helps.
• 19:26
Speaker 1: For some reason, Americans are just like, she's American, right, Canadian? Canadian?
• 19:31
Speaker 1: Was same thing? Well actually not now, but usually it's
• 19:33
Speaker 1: the same thing. But yes, yes, and we're suckers for accents.
• 19:37
Speaker 1: It doesn't really matter which one any will do. We
• 19:41
Speaker 1: just love an accent. So that gets you, That gets
• 19:45
  Speaker 1: you further for.
• 19:46
Speaker 4: Sure, hopefully in some cases. Yes, yeah, yeah.
• 19:49
Speaker 2: And now you guys have a kid. You have a
• 19:50
  Speaker 2: one year old?
• 19:51
Speaker 4: Yeah, little Leo. He's one in a few months now.
• 19:55
Speaker 4: I'm told myself, I'm not going to be the dad
• 19:57
Speaker 4: that says like says it by the months. I'm like,
• 20:00
Speaker 4: he's won in three months. I'm I'm not going to
• 20:02
  Speaker 4: be like a he's a twenty month No, I would
• 20:05
Speaker 4: do it too confusing. Just he's one year and a bit.
• 20:08
Speaker 4: That's where that's where he's at that moment.
• 20:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly exactly. The people who talk in months.
• 20:13
Speaker 1: I once had somebody talk to me and said, Tommy
• 20:16
Speaker 1: that her child was seventy two months.
• 20:18
Speaker 2: I was like, what, I was like, is that five?
• 20:20
Speaker 2: What are you talking about do you mean five?
• 20:23
Speaker 1: I mean, I don't even know what seventy two months is,
• 20:25
Speaker 1: but it's long and I don't have time for that.
• 20:27
Speaker 1: Has your son hit the slopes yet? Have you put
• 20:30
Speaker 1: him on a snowboard yet?
• 20:32
Speaker 4: Not yet? No? No. I went up on the hill
• 20:34
Speaker 4: and I put him in the backpack and we went riding,
• 20:37
Speaker 4: which was really fun. But I haven't got him on
• 20:39
Speaker 4: the board yet. A lot of people ask me that question.
• 20:42
Speaker 4: But we'll see when the time's right he can give
• 20:45
  Speaker 4: it a go.
• 20:46
  Speaker 2: Absolutely.
• 20:46
Speaker 1: Okay, let's move on to snowboarding and why it's what
• 20:49
Speaker 1: is the what is the problem? What when you are
• 20:54
Speaker 1: not a professional athlete like yourself. I want to know,
• 20:58
Speaker 1: and I don't want to shame snow borders. I'm dating
• 21:00
Speaker 1: as somebody who's snowboards right now. I'm trying to transition
• 21:03
Speaker 1: him to skiing, but I don't know that could be
• 21:04
  Speaker 1: a bigger commitment.
• 21:05
Speaker 2: But what is the issue.
• 21:08
Speaker 1: Between skiers and snowboarders and where does it come from?
• 21:11
Speaker 1: And are there different two different sets of etiquette or
• 21:14
Speaker 1: one set of etiquette?
• 21:15
  Speaker 4: I mean, I think I think it's more so the
• 21:18
Speaker 4: skiers have the problem with the snowboarders, not the other
• 21:20
Speaker 4: way around. I mean, it's just it's the history.
• 21:24
Speaker 2: And but why is there such tension. Why why it's
• 21:28
Speaker 2: like England and Ireland.
• 21:29
Speaker 1: Why you don't think snowboarders care about skiers. They don't
• 21:34
Speaker 1: have a problem, They wouldn't want a snowboard only mountain.
• 21:37
Speaker 4: Yeah. I don't know what the gripe is between the two.
• 21:41
Speaker 4: I don't have an agenda. I'm like, if you like
• 21:43
Speaker 4: the mountains and you have as much fun as I do,
• 21:46
Speaker 4: go ahead. But you know, maybe snowboarders in this case
• 21:49
Speaker 4: where you're getting run over and you know, Chloe's been
• 21:52
Speaker 4: run over in the past, is just not building a
• 21:55
Speaker 4: great strong case for us. There's also mountains still in
• 21:58
Speaker 4: the US where you're not allowed to snowboard. So yeah.
• 22:03
Speaker 4: I actually, funnily enough, when I stayed at the hotel
• 22:05
Speaker 4: at one of those mountains before, and it's quite a
• 22:08
Speaker 4: strange experience, fighting with not going out on the hill
• 22:11
Speaker 4: but staying in the hotels, felt like I was really
• 22:14
Speaker 4: in the wrong territory.
• 22:16
Speaker 2: Where were you at Deer Valley? Are you talking about
• 22:17
  Speaker 2: Deer Valley?
• 22:18
Speaker 4: Yeah? I was there, Yeah, Yeah, I know.
• 22:21
Speaker 2: I love it there because there are no snowboarders. I mean,
• 22:24
Speaker 2: I want us to get along. I do. I just
• 22:26
  Speaker 2: don't understand that. It's like it's like a different ilk.
• 22:28
Speaker 1: It's like they just come and it's so rough, and
• 22:31
Speaker 1: then you hear them and you can't see them, and
• 22:33
Speaker 1: and but it's not it's not the behavior of the
• 22:35
Speaker 1: snowboard obviously, it's the behavior of the snowboarder. There's just
• 22:39
Speaker 1: a more of all you.
• 22:42
  Speaker 2: Guys think.
• 22:45
Speaker 4: No, then we don't think it. It's just that we
• 22:47
Speaker 4: can talk about facts. I mean, it's it's important to
• 22:50
Speaker 4: get back to the show. You know. We we're more comfortable.
• 22:54
Speaker 4: We walk around like in shoes. You know, we could
• 22:56
Speaker 4: wake up, roll out of our bed. It's like slippers
• 22:59
Speaker 4: and I could wear those until I go to bed
• 23:01
Speaker 4: at night. I just also think that skiers are a
• 23:03
Speaker 4: little bit upset and they're just like they're just angry
• 23:07
Speaker 4: that they can't do that.
• 23:08
Speaker 1: Here we go, here it comes. I don't think we
• 23:11
Speaker 1: have a problem with skiers. And now he unleashes, unleashes
• 23:15
Speaker 1: this vitriol. How old were you when you went to
• 23:18
  Speaker 1: your first Olympics?
• 23:19
Speaker 4: First Olympics, I was fifteen.
• 23:22
Speaker 2: Okay, so that's crazy, and how old were you when
• 23:24
  Speaker 2: you left home.
• 23:25
Speaker 4: I left home when I was sort of pursue it
• 23:28
Speaker 4: when my parents decided, well and myself, it was all
• 23:33
Speaker 4: of us and my family collectively decided I wanted to
• 23:36
Speaker 4: pursue it professionally. I was twelve. I was really young,
• 23:39
Speaker 4: so it was a massive commitment from my parents to
• 23:42
Speaker 4: have the trust in my coach at the time and
• 23:45
Speaker 4: his sister to look after me not only on the mountain,
• 23:48
Speaker 4: but off the mountain as well. And through that time
• 23:51
Speaker 4: from twelve, I was able to realize a professional career
• 23:55
Speaker 4: in the sport. And then by fourteen I was offered
• 23:58
Speaker 4: the opportunity to go on wrappers in Australia, which was
• 24:01
Speaker 4: a unique special experience and you know, fortunately making it there.
• 24:06
Speaker 4: I was fifteen at the time and taking full adventage
• 24:09
Speaker 4: of all the free McDonald's in Vancouver.
• 24:12
Speaker 1: That's nice that you could take you McDonald's while you're
• 24:14
Speaker 1: a teenager growing up and.
• 24:17
Speaker 4: The case anymore, No, no, you can't.
• 24:19
Speaker 2: As soon as you're an adult. You have to stop that.
• 24:22
Speaker 1: But what was it like leaving your family at twelve
• 24:24
Speaker 1: years old? I mean that must have been emotional and
• 24:28
Speaker 1: for all of you guys, for your siblings, for your parents,
• 24:31
  Speaker 1: for you.
• 24:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, it was hugely emotional. And recently we just made
• 24:37
Speaker 4: a documentary and for the first time in a long time,
• 24:41
Speaker 4: you know, it was kind of the first time that
• 24:44
Speaker 4: I'd really heard everyone else's experience about that. I mean,
• 24:47
Speaker 4: it's almost been twenty years since since that moment when
• 24:51
Speaker 4: I left Melbourne and going away overseas on my own.
• 24:54
Speaker 4: I remember being at the airport and it was just
• 24:57
Speaker 4: the floodgates are open. Everyone was very emotional, myself included.
• 25:01
Speaker 4: All the way through the flight from Melbourne to Sydney,
• 25:04
Speaker 4: I was crying, and then all the way over to Europe.
• 25:07
Speaker 4: And yeah, I think that my parents didn't even realize
• 25:10
Speaker 4: how emotional I was until we watched the film recently.
• 25:14
Speaker 4: And then I didn't realize out their side of the
• 25:17
Speaker 4: story until we watched it recently as well. And my
• 25:21
Speaker 4: mum said to me the other day, She's like, you know,
• 25:23
Speaker 4: if we had have known how upset you were, we
• 25:25
Speaker 4: never would have sent you. And I said to Mum,
• 25:27
Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, but look what we've realized, Like
• 25:30
Speaker 4: as much as much as it was so hard in
• 25:32
Speaker 4: the moment, and you know, I do think that all
• 25:35
Speaker 4: extraordinary things that you want to try and accomplish takes hardship,
• 25:40
Speaker 4: and you know that was mine. But I was able
• 25:42
Speaker 4: to travel with great people and I was in a
• 25:46
Speaker 4: good and safe environment. It was a challenging time. But
• 25:49
Speaker 4: it's nice to reflect on now.
• 25:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, I would imagine it just gives you so much. A.
• 25:54
Speaker 1: You grew up real quick, right, and B you just
• 25:58
Speaker 1: become really independent and self sufficient at a young age,
• 26:01
Speaker 1: even if you do have people helping you.
• 26:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely. And I think you know even more so
• 26:07
Speaker 4: is you know the stigma. It's snowboarding, it's smarking, it's drinking,
• 26:11
  Speaker 4: it's partying, it's you know, it's it's a wild same
• 26:14
  Speaker 4: still today as.
• 26:15
Speaker 1: I love all things I love and start snowboarding exactly,
• 26:20
Speaker 1: you can do that while you ski.
• 26:21
Speaker 2: Also, by the way, just.
• 26:25
Speaker 4: So my parents isn't there naturally, I mean now I'm
• 26:28
Speaker 4: a data would be thinking about that. The environment and
• 26:31
Speaker 4: the and the world you got into. It's evolved a
• 26:33
Speaker 4: lot since then, but yeah, a lot of factors for
• 26:35
Speaker 4: them to think about, which I'm sure and I lost
• 26:37
  Speaker 4: sleep over.
• 26:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, and also I'm sure, and also it's such a
• 26:41
Speaker 1: and you're the baby on top of it.
• 26:43
Speaker 2: But it's also such a solitary sport.
• 26:45
  Speaker 5: You know.
• 26:46
Speaker 1: It's like, I mean, I guess all these kind of
• 26:48
Speaker 1: mountain sports are very solitary unless you're doing you know,
• 26:51
Speaker 1: like you know, you're working together. But like, how does
• 26:54
Speaker 1: how does that impact your relationship with other athletes, and
• 26:58
Speaker 1: how does it impact your relationship with your coaches like
• 27:01
Speaker 1: you become is it like would you compare it to
• 27:04
Speaker 1: maybe like a tennis player or do you feel more
• 27:06
Speaker 1: like you're on more of a team.
• 27:08
Speaker 4: Yeah? Sure, so I think the unique thing about snowboarding
• 27:11
Speaker 4: or our world, which is very cool, is everyone does
• 27:15
Speaker 4: have a good relationship. So you're up there at the
• 27:16
Speaker 4: top of the pipe, for example, you know, some might
• 27:20
Speaker 4: wish each other luck, like it's a little bit more
• 27:23
Speaker 4: call it happy go lucky in the sense of being
• 27:26
Speaker 4: a little bit less cutthroat. I'm probably more so on
• 27:29
Speaker 4: the other side where I'm up there, I have intention,
• 27:32
Speaker 4: I'm not necessarily focused on making friends in that exact moment.
• 27:36
Speaker 4: But yeah, I would say that there is a sense
• 27:40
Speaker 4: of solitude that you have to be okay with being alone,
• 27:44
Speaker 4: be okay with being extremely selfish about what your endeavors are.
• 27:49
Speaker 4: You're you're not doing it for anyone. You have to
• 27:51
Speaker 4: be so I guess obsessed with the craft to want
• 27:54
Speaker 4: to do it for yourself. I've always found my team
• 27:57
Speaker 4: is more so you know, my family, other people that
• 27:59
Speaker 4: have helped me in my journey. Like that's the kind
• 28:02
Speaker 4: of weight that I ride with. Is. I'm doing it
• 28:05
Speaker 4: because it wouldn't be satisfying enough for me if I
• 28:07
Speaker 4: was just up there with my own intent every week
• 28:09
Speaker 4: to just do it for myself. I think my team
• 28:12
Speaker 4: is I want to do well for them. But yeah,
• 28:15
Speaker 4: you're right, there is. It's a little bit more like
• 28:17
Speaker 4: a tennis player rather than a football team for sure.
• 28:21
  Speaker 2: M Yeah, that's interesting.
• 28:23
Speaker 1: Well, I mean you get to travel all over to
• 28:25
Speaker 1: the world to train in different places.
• 28:28
Speaker 2: What is there anywhere you prefer never to go back to?
• 28:32
Speaker 4: Uh? We did World Championships in Georgia a couple of
• 28:39
  Speaker 4: years ago.
• 28:39
Speaker 2: Georgia the country the country?
• 28:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, the country in Georgia. I forget the
• 28:45
Speaker 4: name of the mountain. We were very far from anywhere
• 28:48
Speaker 4: more so it's actually the country was cool, but this
• 28:51
Speaker 4: where we were, the weather conditions it was out there,
• 28:55
  Speaker 4: so probably there.
• 28:57
Speaker 1: I think Georgia is the country where I saw that
• 28:59
Speaker 1: video that viral one year with like the gondola where
• 29:03
Speaker 1: the gondola chairs were put on backwards and then they
• 29:05
Speaker 1: started turning. They they've flipped it and reversed it, and
• 29:08
Speaker 1: then people were just flying off of the gondola because
• 29:11
Speaker 1: it was coming around like sixteen kilometers an hour.
• 29:15
Speaker 4: It was like flippingly sounds like sounds like something I
• 29:19
Speaker 4: would have seen when I was there, So it probably was.
• 29:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, tell us about your documentary. I want to hear
• 29:26
  Speaker 2: about that.
• 29:27
Speaker 4: Yeah, it was. It's been really fun. I mean, as
• 29:29
Speaker 4: the we made the documentary called pipe Dream and came
• 29:34
Speaker 4: out on Netflix and December nineteen, so it's still early
• 29:37
Speaker 4: days fun, which is yeah, it has been awesome, and yeah,
• 29:42
Speaker 4: I think overall it's obviously incredibly rewarding to have been
• 29:46
Speaker 4: able to go on such an amazing platform for myself,
• 29:49
Speaker 4: but also just for snowbarding. Is really exciting just to
• 29:53
Speaker 4: get more people, hopefully more viewers and eyes and everyone
• 29:58
Speaker 4: engaged in and what we're doing here in the mountains.
• 30:01
Speaker 4: And it was a pretty emotional like process getting it
• 30:05
Speaker 4: all together and obviously hearing from my family and other
• 30:09
Speaker 4: peers and hearing from other you know, snowboarding competitors present
• 30:13
Speaker 4: in the past, and so it's quite cool to hear
• 30:16
Speaker 4: a lot of people's perspective which I actually haven't heard before.
• 30:20
Speaker 4: So yeah, it was a rewarding process, long process, but
• 30:23
Speaker 4: really really cool. And I've never told my story like
• 30:26
Speaker 4: that before, which was which was fun to do.
• 30:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't wait to see it.
• 30:30
Speaker 1: That's that's that must be really interesting to see all
• 30:33
Speaker 1: these people talk about you, because I think in life,
• 30:35
Speaker 1: you know, we talk about this a lot on this podcast,
• 30:37
Speaker 1: like you don't really have time necessarily to reflect on
• 30:41
Speaker 1: things like especially when you're going, like you're an athlete,
• 30:43
Speaker 1: like you're training all year long.
• 30:45
Speaker 2: Literally what you have like a month off a year
• 30:47
Speaker 2: or something? Is that right? A month off?
• 30:50
Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, it's probably say three months because you go
• 30:54
Speaker 4: Northern Hemisphere season which starts in October, goes through to
• 30:59
Speaker 4: April week of May, then you have June off, then
• 31:02
Speaker 4: you you know, then the Southern Hemisphere win to start,
• 31:06
Speaker 4: so you're kind of obviously is always constantly chasing winter,
• 31:09
Speaker 4: so you get a few months off a year.
• 31:12
Speaker 1: Okay, So if you had to describe before we move
• 31:13
Speaker 1: on to the next part of that, I just want
• 31:15
Speaker 1: to I want to know what you when you are
• 31:18
Speaker 1: starting and you're competing, and you're listening to music to
• 31:21
Speaker 1: get ready once it starts. What is in your head
• 31:24
Speaker 1: if you fall behind by a fraction of a second
• 31:27
Speaker 1: or you don't hit the same there's something that you
• 31:29
Speaker 1: want to hit. What do you say to yourself in
• 31:31
Speaker 1: that moment when something doesn't land like it's supposed to
• 31:34
Speaker 1: land one hundred percent?
• 31:36
Speaker 4: Honestly, I reflect on in that exact moment, I'd just say,
• 31:43
Speaker 4: fuck it, let's just go get it done, because you
• 31:46
Speaker 4: can spend so much time thinking about, Oh, I should
• 31:48
Speaker 4: have done this better, did I prepare well enough? What's
• 31:51
Speaker 4: he going to do? You know, everyone's watching, everyone's expecting.
• 31:55
  Speaker 4: It's like, that's what I do. I just say effort,
• 31:58
Speaker 4: And I think there is this really amazing piece in
• 32:03
Speaker 4: being able to say that confidently, because that's like the
• 32:08
Speaker 4: best part about what I do is when you can
• 32:11
Speaker 4: drop in and just be so present in the moment
• 32:13
Speaker 4: with every trick and enjoying the environment. That's what That's
• 32:18
Speaker 4: what I try and focus on. It would be in
• 32:19
Speaker 4: the case. I'm sure it's similar for you. If you're
• 32:22
Speaker 4: going out for a big gig or doing stand up,
• 32:24
Speaker 4: it's like, you've prepared so much, you have ten more seconds.
• 32:28
Speaker 4: What else can you do other than just be like, like,
• 32:31
Speaker 4: let's just get after it and see how we go
• 32:33
Speaker 4: and if things happen, it happens, and you're going to
• 32:36
Speaker 4: learn from it. And that's what I do. Embrace that
• 32:40
Speaker 4: a lot. I think that, you know, you do spend
• 32:41
Speaker 4: a lot of time preparing, and you can become way
• 32:44
Speaker 4: too meticulous and overthinking and over over everything that you
• 32:48
Speaker 4: end up actually giving yourself. You have no satisfaction because
• 32:52
Speaker 4: you're like, well, what was all the work for if
• 32:54
Speaker 4: I can't just embrace the moment?
• 32:56
Speaker 1: So I do focus on that, yeah, yeah, And do
• 32:59
Speaker 1: you find that that's different now as you've gotten older,
• 33:01
Speaker 1: that you're more in the present moment than you were
• 33:03
Speaker 1: when you were competing as a younger person.
• 33:06
Speaker 4: Definitely, one hundred percent, I think naturally, you know, still young,
• 33:10
Speaker 4: but going through you know time when you're younger, you
• 33:15
Speaker 4: do spend and waste so much time thinking about things
• 33:18
Speaker 4: that just do not matter at all, whether that's on
• 33:21
Speaker 4: the mountain or off the mountain. You know, I did that,
• 33:23
Speaker 4: went through that, whereas now I'm very much yeah, very present,
• 33:27
Speaker 4: you know, I know what I want to accomplish. I
• 33:30
Speaker 4: know who I am as a person. My two feet
• 33:32
Speaker 4: are on the ground, and I do lean into that.
• 33:35
Speaker 1: Like if you had one weakness that you would that
• 33:38
Speaker 1: you would like to work on, or that you were
• 33:39
Speaker 1: working on, what would that be.
• 33:41
Speaker 4: It's a good question. I My weakness would probably.
• 33:45
Speaker 2: Be besides being a snowboarder.
• 33:49
Speaker 4: Besides being a snowboater, it would be, to be honest,
• 33:54
Speaker 4: It's still it's funny like even after having found such
• 33:57
Speaker 4: a groove in you know, maybe whatever you do find
• 34:00
Speaker 4: success as in my case, being able to compete really
• 34:03
Speaker 4: well and do well in advance, is still belief. Like you,
• 34:08
Speaker 4: I still have moments where you know you prepare so
• 34:11
Speaker 4: well and you're like, all I have to do is
• 34:16
Speaker 4: show up and put my best foot forward and land
• 34:17
Speaker 4: a really amazing run and it all you know, it'll
• 34:20
Speaker 4: go my way where well enough and in tune enough
• 34:23
Speaker 4: that we know when we have the tools to win.
• 34:24
Speaker 4: If you don't, you know where you're kind of at.
• 34:27
Speaker 4: And I still sometimes I battle with that belief of
• 34:32
Speaker 4: can I actually realize now what I'm trying to accomplish
• 34:36
Speaker 4: and have I taken the right steps to get there?
• 34:39
Speaker 4: So I would say that that's something that I continue
• 34:42
Speaker 4: to work on. But because as much as I still
• 34:46
Speaker 4: I am working on, I also think it's kind of
• 34:48
Speaker 4: my blessing because then I don't take advantage of any
• 34:51
Speaker 4: day every opportunity is an opportunity. I try and squeeze
• 34:55
Speaker 4: every opportunity that I can training, And maybe that's that
• 34:59
Speaker 4: lack of belief that it makes me go overboard in
• 35:02
Speaker 4: term with my preparation my training. So I don't know,
• 35:05
Speaker 4: it's probably whether it's a weakness or maybe it could
• 35:08
Speaker 4: might not be, but that would be right, Yeah.
• 35:10
Speaker 1: I mean circling back to this subject or the like
• 35:12
Speaker 1: the topic of reflection, like I always think, you know,
• 35:15
Speaker 1: if there's something big, high stakes in my life which
• 35:18
Speaker 1: is obviously very different than yours, but like I always think, okay,
• 35:21
Speaker 1: think about all the things that led to you being here, Like,
• 35:23
Speaker 1: think about all of where you came from. So like
• 35:26
Speaker 1: when I talk about reflection, like I know, as an athlete,
• 35:28
Speaker 1: you're you know, you're moving so fast, you're training so much,
• 35:31
Speaker 1: you have limited time off or limited off season, and
• 35:35
Speaker 1: it's like you you really have to take note of
• 35:37
Speaker 1: where you began and where you've come, how far you've
• 35:40
Speaker 1: come you know, as a reminder for anyone really in
• 35:43
Speaker 1: any situation, it's like, oh, I'm the one who got
• 35:46
Speaker 1: myself all the way here, obviously with help of coaches
• 35:48
Speaker 1: and support from your family, et cetera, but to and
• 35:52
Speaker 1: your wife, but also.
• 35:53
Speaker 2: To really remember, like how you know how far you've come?
• 35:57
Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely. And I think that the one I always
• 36:02
Speaker 4: sit on a lot is the courage. I think everyone
• 36:05
Speaker 4: we all have passions, we all have something that we
• 36:08
Speaker 4: want to realize in our lives. And I feel very
• 36:12
Speaker 4: fortunate that I'm one of the ones that was had
• 36:14
Speaker 4: the courage to actually continue and go for it, particularly
• 36:18
Speaker 4: with you know, the setbacks that you have when you're young.
• 36:21
Speaker 4: And I think that's across a lot of people always
• 36:24
Speaker 4: ask me like, oh, who do you look up to?
• 36:26
Speaker 4: Who do you know admire in your life? And to
• 36:28
Speaker 4: be honest, I don't have one person. It's always people
• 36:32
Speaker 4: that I look at and I hear their story and
• 36:34
Speaker 4: I hear about their adversity and their courage who actually
• 36:37
Speaker 4: pursue what they want to do in their life. And
• 36:39
Speaker 4: that's hard. So I do focus on that too. Is
• 36:43
Speaker 4: the courage. Takes a lot of courage to actually commit
• 36:46
Speaker 4: to your passion in life. And I've done that, which
• 36:49
Speaker 4: has been rewarding and fortunately worked out. But yeah, yeah.
• 36:54
Speaker 2: People always say that to me. Who do you look
• 36:56
  Speaker 2: up to?
• 36:56
  Speaker 4: Like?
• 36:56
Speaker 2: Who is your favorite?
• 36:58
Speaker 1: I was like, well, Bill Cosby, but that didn't really
• 37:00
Speaker 1: work out for me, So I have to stop mentioning it.
• 37:02
  Speaker 2: That's not it's not a hero anymore.
• 37:04
Speaker 1: Anyway, We're gonna take a break and we're gonna be
• 37:06
Speaker 1: right back with Scottie James. Okay, And we're back with
• 37:14
  Speaker 1: Scotty James.
• 37:15
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 37:16
Speaker 1: Scotty James is on his way to the Olympics. So
• 37:18
Speaker 1: and this is not his first time at the Olympics.
• 37:20
Speaker 1: This is your fifth time.
• 37:21
  Speaker 2: At the Olympics.
• 37:22
  Speaker 4: Fifth Yes, vintage.
• 37:24
Speaker 1: Yeah, vintage, fifth time, my gosh. Okay, So we now
• 37:28
Speaker 1: we take questions from caller Scotty.
• 37:30
  Speaker 2: Are you ready?
• 37:31
Speaker 1: I'm ready, You seem ready, You seem ready, yes, Catherine, what.
• 37:34
  Speaker 2: Do we got?
• 37:35
  Speaker 5: All? Right?
• 37:35
Speaker 3: Well, we're gonna start with a couple skiing snowboarding questions,
• 37:38
Speaker 3: but then move on to some interpersonal, juicy stuff.
• 37:41
Speaker 1: So then we're gonna move on to some guynecology questions
• 37:44
Speaker 1: just to keep you comfortable exactly right in your Wheelhouse.
• 37:47
Speaker 3: So we're gonna start with a brand news segment, which
• 37:49
Speaker 3: is our one drink question. And this is just a
• 37:52
Speaker 3: little quickie. So our listener says, Dear Chelsea, this is
• 37:56
Speaker 3: not an incredibly deep question.
• 37:58
Speaker 2: It is about skiing.
• 38:00
Speaker 3: I grew up snowboarding and decided I wanted to switch
• 38:02
Speaker 3: to skiing after college. For longevity purposes. I visualize a
• 38:06
Speaker 3: fifty year old version of myself who is a badass
• 38:08
Speaker 3: gear and spends a third of my year and tell
• 38:10
  Speaker 3: you're ride.
• 38:11
Speaker 2: Here are my questions.
• 38:12
Speaker 3: One what age did you start spending serious time skiing?
• 38:16
Speaker 2: Do you think thirty one is too late now?
• 38:18
  Speaker 4: Two?
• 38:19
Speaker 3: How long did it take you to feel confident on blacks?
• 38:22
Speaker 3: With age, my fearlessness has faded and I'm frustrated with
• 38:25
Speaker 3: how much hesitation I have going down the mountain. How
• 38:27
Speaker 3: many lessons did you have before you felt really capable
• 38:30
Speaker 3: and confident to handle all terrain?
• 38:33
Speaker 2: Great questions. I love it. First of all, I didn't
• 38:35
  Speaker 2: start getting.
• 38:36
Speaker 1: Into skiing like seriously, seriously until I was like thirty nine.
• 38:40
Speaker 1: I mean, I skied for in my thirties, but I
• 38:42
Speaker 1: didn't start like taking like actual private instruction which are
• 38:46
  Speaker 1: pretty expensive.
• 38:47
Speaker 2: So if you can afford that, great, But.
• 38:49
Speaker 1: If not, your fearlessness gets replaced by competency. I would say,
• 38:54
Speaker 1: you know, what you lose in fearlessness, you gain incompetency
• 38:57
Speaker 1: and capability. So the more time you spend and on
• 39:00
Speaker 1: the mountain, and the more runs you do in bad conditions,
• 39:03
Speaker 1: in good conditions, in powder and groomers, all of it,
• 39:07
  Speaker 1: you become a better skier. And I like, I'm a
• 39:10
Speaker 1: really good skier now. I could ski down pretty much anything.
• 39:13
Speaker 1: My friends took me down something like two days ago
• 39:15
Speaker 1: that I was like, if I had done that ten
• 39:17
Speaker 1: years ago, I would never have taken I would never
• 39:19
Speaker 1: have made it right. I would have been like, no way,
• 39:21
Speaker 1: So that would have felt really good. But you know,
• 39:24
Speaker 1: thirty one, Yeah, you're down. You could do whatever it takes,
• 39:27
Speaker 1: like I think it takes a good one hundred days
• 39:29
Speaker 1: on a mount but you want to get instruction from
• 39:31
Speaker 1: someone who knows what they're doing so you don't create
• 39:34
Speaker 1: really bad habits and then beat up your body, right Scotty.
• 39:38
Speaker 4: Whoever asked the question lost me it. I transferred to skiing.
• 39:42
Speaker 1: So my comment, first of all, and also to our
• 39:46
Speaker 1: writer in you're doing the right thing by leaving snowboarding
• 39:50
Speaker 1: and transferring to skiing. Scotty and I are from two
• 39:53
Speaker 1: different schools of thought obviously, and I support you one
• 39:56
  Speaker 1: hundred percent.
• 39:57
Speaker 2: And that's it. Problem solved, all right? It cheers.
• 40:01
Speaker 4: Is that our one trick? Yes, Scotty and I can
• 40:05
Speaker 4: confirm Chelsea is actually looking at potentially you told me
• 40:09
Speaker 4: earlier you're looking at doing some instructing at a local resort.
• 40:12
Speaker 4: So maybe, right, maybe you could take that on.
• 40:15
Speaker 2: I got to get my level ones first. I gotta
• 40:17
Speaker 2: get my level three and four.
• 40:19
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 40:19
Speaker 1: Double blacks, Yeah, it takes a while to get down there.
• 40:22
Speaker 1: But by the way, once you get good at skiing
• 40:23
Speaker 1: and double black you don't even look at whether it's
• 40:25
Speaker 1: black or blue or it doesn't matter. You're fine.
• 40:29
Speaker 4: It's true now that to second you, you're right. I
• 40:32
Speaker 4: think the more consistency you have and the more often
• 40:35
Speaker 4: you do it and your curiosity is the way you
• 40:39
Speaker 4: will win. So go for it. But you should stand
• 40:41
  Speaker 4: on board.
• 40:42
  Speaker 2: Yeah all right.
• 40:44
Speaker 3: Well, our first caller today is Jess, and she is
• 40:47
Speaker 3: calling in from Vancouver. So she says, dear Chelsea, I've
• 40:53
Speaker 3: fallen up. This is another skiing question, but it will
• 40:56
Speaker 3: make sense to you, Scottie. So I've fallen out of
• 40:59
Speaker 3: love with skiing. Growing up, some of my best memories
• 41:02
Speaker 3: were spent on the slopes, and I chose a grad
• 41:04
Speaker 3: school partly based on proximity to a hill. Post COVID,
• 41:08
Speaker 3: I took a break from my studies and moved to Queenstown,
• 41:10
Speaker 3: New Zealand to work on the ski field. I got
• 41:12
Speaker 3: paid to ski every day and loved it. Wanting to improve,
• 41:16
Speaker 3: I signed up for a ski instructor exam. I really
• 41:18
Speaker 3: enjoyed developing my technique, and Chelsea, I too, ended up
• 41:22
Speaker 3: sleeping with my ski instructor.
• 41:23
  Speaker 2: We're now married.
• 41:25
Speaker 3: My husband is a highly skilled now sports professional and
• 41:27
Speaker 3: skiing is central to his world. But within that world
• 41:30
Speaker 3: I often don't feel welcome. When we're with his friends,
• 41:33
Speaker 3: conversation revolves almost exclusively around ski technique and criticism of
• 41:38
Speaker 3: the industry, and I largely feel excluded. Being surrounded by
• 41:42
Speaker 3: constant evaluation has made me wonder what he thinks about
• 41:45
Speaker 3: my skiing, what his peers think too. It's such a
• 41:48
Speaker 3: visible sport, and I've seen the ego driven underside of it.
• 41:51
Speaker 3: Over time, I've come to associate skiing with feeling inferior
• 41:54
Speaker 3: when my husband and I do ski together, the days
• 41:56
Speaker 3: have slowly morphed into being about filming him for YouTube
• 41:59
Speaker 3: and marketing his way business. I've become the cliche. I've
• 42:02
Speaker 3: become the cliche Instagram girlfriend. We moved to BC a
• 42:06
Speaker 3: couple of years ago and have incredible skiing available to us.
• 42:10
Speaker 3: We've had conversations about this, but I find myself sabotaging
• 42:14
Speaker 3: ski days by offering just a film without being asked,
• 42:16
Speaker 3: just to avoid skiing myself.
• 42:18
Speaker 2: Honestly, I'd rather be in the lodge with a margarita. Chelsea.
• 42:21
Speaker 3: How can I build my ski self esteem and fall
• 42:23
Speaker 3: back in love with the mountains again?
• 42:25
Speaker 2: Thanks so much, Jess.
• 42:27
Speaker 1: Well, Jess, it feels like you got to find a
• 42:29
Speaker 1: group of like women to ski with so that you
• 42:31
Speaker 1: don't feel like that you got a new I mean,
• 42:33
Speaker 1: it doesn't even have to be women. It just has
• 42:34
Speaker 1: to be people that aren't that judgy or so psychotically
• 42:37
Speaker 1: talking about skiing all the time.
• 42:40
Speaker 2: That's not fun either.
• 42:40
Speaker 1: Nobody wants to talk about technique all the time unless
• 42:43
Speaker 1: you're Scotty and you're on your way to the Olympics
• 42:45
Speaker 1: and that's all you have.
• 42:46
  Speaker 2: To talk about.
• 42:47
  Speaker 4: Even I don't do that, I promise.
• 42:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, actually go back and tell them Scotty James doesn't
• 42:52
Speaker 1: even talk about it as much as you guys do,
• 42:54
Speaker 1: and he's competing in the Olympics.
• 42:57
Speaker 5: Yeah. When I was in New Zealand, we had worked
• 43:00
Speaker 5: in the industry a little bit and I found some
• 43:02
Speaker 5: group of women that were a little bit less intense
• 43:04
Speaker 5: about it, so it was really fun. But I haven't
• 43:07
Speaker 5: quite found that yere in BC and Canada. But yeah,
• 43:10
  Speaker 5: I think that's a great idea.
• 43:11
Speaker 2: But you know what, you could find ski groups online.
• 43:14
Speaker 1: You know there's like I'm in a ski group on Saturdays,
• 43:16
Speaker 1: like Club Link at Whistler Black Home where I ski.
• 43:19
Speaker 1: You know, we have a guy that just cuts the
• 43:21
Speaker 1: lines for us, you know when it's busy and like
• 43:23
  Speaker 1: takes us.
• 43:23
Speaker 2: It's fun. You can do that.
• 43:25
Speaker 1: You can join and then Cyprus and Grouse are in Vancouver.
• 43:29
Speaker 2: I mean that's so much fun night skiing. I love that.
• 43:32
Speaker 2: But yeah, I would just change the channel. Like, first
• 43:34
  Speaker 2: of all, stop.
• 43:35
Speaker 1: Going and recording your boyfriend husband whatever he is, Like,
• 43:38
  Speaker 1: why what are.
• 43:39
Speaker 2: You as assistant? I mean that's not fun for anyone.
• 43:44
Speaker 2: I mean, do you have children, No, not yet exactly but.
• 43:47
Speaker 1: That's why you shouldn't been filming anybody, because he's an
• 43:50
Speaker 1: adult man. I mean, you know, Scotty, what do you
• 43:54
Speaker 1: have to say to this anything?
• 43:56
Speaker 4: I would say. Firstly, you welcome over to our side
• 43:59
Speaker 4: any day of the week. The snowboarding can get you
• 44:01
Speaker 4: some snowboards, yeah we can. We can bring you in.
• 44:05
Speaker 4: It'll be a warm welcome. Secondly, it's actually really interesting.
• 44:09
Speaker 4: My ears pricked up when you said that you sometimes
• 44:12
Speaker 4: don't feel like you fit in into conversation. It doesn't
• 44:15
Speaker 4: matter your level. I have that same feeling in my world.
• 44:19
Speaker 4: Sometimes there's maybe a certain type of person or a
• 44:23
Speaker 4: certain type of you know, way that people perceive snowboarders
• 44:27
Speaker 4: or skis in this case to be and if you
• 44:29
Speaker 4: don't fit that mold, you don't really feel like you're
• 44:32
Speaker 4: a part of what they're doing. And it's you know,
• 44:36
Speaker 4: even for me, I always got a bit insecure about that.
• 44:39
Speaker 4: But I think that the second that you realize, I
• 44:42
Speaker 4: guess who you are and what you're doing and why
• 44:44
Speaker 4: you're actually even out there. Like firstly, you're just wanting
• 44:47
Speaker 4: to have fun, and that's what anyone should be up
• 44:49
Speaker 4: there doing. If you're not pursuing it professionally, I think,
• 44:53
Speaker 4: just find a bit of sanity and that you actually
• 44:56
Speaker 4: enjoy it. And if people start to have a go
• 44:58
Speaker 4: at you about not being on that level of knowledge,
• 45:01
Speaker 4: like he gives a shit, it doesn't matter, like at all.
• 45:05
Speaker 5: It is quite a made up sport, I suppose to,
• 45:09
Speaker 5: you know, unless you're in a gate and you're trying
• 45:11
Speaker 5: to get from A to B really quickly, or you're
• 45:13
Speaker 5: being judged on specific criteria.
• 45:15
  Speaker 4: Is made up.
• 45:16
Speaker 5: So I do try to tell myself that, like, it
• 45:17
Speaker 5: doesn't really matter what I look like. I'm still having
• 45:20
Speaker 5: fun and that's the point. But but yeah, there's definitely
• 45:22
Speaker 5: a little bit of ego and I think that comparison
• 45:25
  Speaker 5: that yeah.
• 45:26
  Speaker 2: But that's men. I mean that's why, like don't sky
• 45:28
Speaker 2: with a group of men, Like that's just not fun.
• 45:31
Speaker 2: You know, you have solution.
• 45:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like one exceptions.
• 45:35
Speaker 1: Yeah there are Scott, You're seem like a really nice guy,
• 45:38
Speaker 1: but again, you know, still a snowboarder, a world champion,
• 45:41
Speaker 1: but a snowboarder nonetheless, So you just got to get
• 45:44
Speaker 1: you got to change the channel and decide who you're
• 45:46
Speaker 1: skiing with and just be honest with your partner and
• 45:48
Speaker 1: be like, listen, it's not fun. I don't feel like
• 45:50
Speaker 1: I want to have fun on skis. I'm like losing
• 45:52
Speaker 1: my love. Have you expressed that to him, by the way.
• 45:54
Speaker 6: Yeah, we've We've talked about it a bit.
• 45:56
Speaker 5: I think the worst season was last season, just I
• 45:59
Speaker 5: didn't actually get as day to ski to myself, But
• 46:02
Speaker 5: he knows how I feel. The issue is that he's
• 46:05
Speaker 5: trying to make YouTube his business, and I'm kind of
• 46:09
Speaker 5: tied into that as well, right, Like, he doesn't really
• 46:11
Speaker 5: have anyone else to go out with him, so sometimes
• 46:14
Speaker 5: sometimes I kind of get pulled into that. But I
• 46:17
Speaker 5: guess trying to make that boundary or draw that line.
• 46:19
Speaker 2: A college student, find a college student to do that.
• 46:22
Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, that's a good idea.
• 46:23
Speaker 1: Great idea, And I wasn't going to say that, but
• 46:25
Speaker 1: I was going to say, you can also do you know,
• 46:26
Speaker 1: you do something for him and then he does, you know,
• 46:29
Speaker 1: and then okay, in exchange for that, you get to
• 46:31
Speaker 1: go skiing alone, or you go skiing with a group
• 46:34
Speaker 1: of people, or you go skiing and he's not allowed
• 46:35
Speaker 1: to talk about skiing for the entire day. You know,
• 46:38
Speaker 1: like figure out what the compromise is while you're skiing.
• 46:42
Speaker 2: He's you're not allowed to talk about skiing. Wall we're skiing.
• 46:47
Speaker 4: It's one margarite, I mean, come on, yeah, oh good negotiation.
• 46:51
Speaker 1: What is your drink of choice on the mountain, Scotty,
• 46:53
Speaker 1: When you can have a drink when you are celebrating,
• 46:56
  Speaker 1: what is it?
• 46:56
Speaker 4: Good question after like an event? Probably champagne.
• 47:01
Speaker 1: Actually yeah, I mean that's because they're spraying it all
• 47:03
Speaker 1: over you so readily available.
• 47:06
Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I like.
• 47:07
Speaker 1: A moscow mule on the mountain, or I like a
• 47:09
Speaker 1: stiff margarita because I like to have a margarita juice
• 47:12
Speaker 1: boost at around eleven. If I go out around nine,
• 47:14
Speaker 1: I like to stop, have a little margarita at eleventh,
• 47:17
  Speaker 1: and then.
• 47:17
Speaker 2: Go back out and have a little more bravery.
• 47:19
Speaker 4: This is this is the Olympics of Skiing drinking knowledge
• 47:23
  Speaker 4: by Chelsea.
• 47:24
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 47:24
Speaker 1: Yeah, so there you go, Jess, and hopefully I'll run
• 47:27
Speaker 1: into you one of these mountains.
• 47:29
Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, we're going to go into the interior in
• 47:31
Speaker 5: a few weeks in February.
• 47:32
  Speaker 2: So fun.
• 47:33
Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, oh good, Okay, well yeah, but don't
• 47:36
Speaker 1: lose your love, you know, if you love skiing, like
• 47:38
Speaker 1: make sure you like you've got to like garden your passions,
• 47:41
Speaker 1: you know what I mean, just like you have to
• 47:42
Speaker 1: like garden your relationship. You have to like make sure
• 47:45
Speaker 1: you do what you want to do and enjoy something
• 47:47
Speaker 1: that you love that you like kind of got ruined
• 47:50
  Speaker 1: by somebody else.
• 47:50
Speaker 2: Like don't let that, don't let them take that away.
• 47:53
Speaker 1: You know, go and be like true to yourself and
• 47:57
Speaker 1: get back out there.
• 47:58
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 47:58
Speaker 5: I think the idea of finding women to ski with
• 48:00
Speaker 5: is a good one.
• 48:01
Speaker 1: Yeahs always if you're a woman. I like, you know,
• 48:04
Speaker 1: skiing with women. I like women guides every I'm like,
• 48:06
Speaker 1: if she could move her body like that, then I
• 48:08
Speaker 1: can move my body like that. You know, it's easier
• 48:11
Speaker 1: sometimes with a woman when you are a woman.
• 48:13
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a good point. Okay, thanks to think about it.
• 48:16
  Speaker 6: Thank you guys.
• 48:17
Speaker 2: Okay, great, thanks for going. Take care.
• 48:19
  Speaker 6: Thanks.
• 48:20
  Speaker 2: Thanks.
• 48:20
Speaker 1: I would love to do and like a thing where
• 48:22
Speaker 1: they had to with spectators had to compete drinking while
• 48:25
Speaker 1: at the Olympics and then interviewing the athletes after who
• 48:29
Speaker 1: could do that the best?
• 48:30
Speaker 2: And that would be me. I would now lose my shit.
• 48:33
Speaker 1: The more alcohol in my system, the more clarity I get.
• 48:37
  Speaker 4: I mean, I think that's a fair pitch.
• 48:39
  Speaker 2: I do too. Actually, I don't know why I'm not
• 48:41
  Speaker 2: doing that. I don't know.
• 48:42
Speaker 1: They must have hired somebody else, somebody more reliable. Okay, Catherine,
• 48:47
Speaker 1: what else? What else do we got?
• 48:48
  Speaker 5: Well?
• 48:49
Speaker 3: Our next caller is Rebecca. She says, you're Chelsea. I
• 48:52
Speaker 3: am a forty two year old who moved to a
• 48:54
Speaker 3: Greek island on my own just over a year ago.
• 48:57
Speaker 3: After nannying and waiting tables my whole life, I decided
• 49:00
Speaker 3: it was time to live my dream and stop waiting
• 49:02
Speaker 3: for my person for my life to begin. So I
• 49:05
Speaker 3: use my savings to do the Golden Visa and buy
• 49:07
Speaker 3: property in Greece, while giving myself a few years to
• 49:10
Speaker 3: really give my all to my business and gain clients.
• 49:13
Speaker 3: I know it will take some time to support this
• 49:14
Speaker 3: life financially. With a savvy budget, I can support myself
• 49:17
Speaker 3: with savings for another year until my business picks up,
• 49:20
Speaker 3: or I have to go back to the US and
• 49:22
Speaker 3: find another nanny job. Recently, I got on a dating
• 49:25
Speaker 3: app and found a really great guy who's also an expat.
• 49:28
Speaker 3: Our relationship is quite new, but we're very compatible and
• 49:32
Speaker 3: we're falling fast for each other. He's in a very
• 49:35
Speaker 3: different financial situation. He recently retired. He's in his fifties,
• 49:39
Speaker 3: with plenty of money, and is constantly taking lavish vacations
• 49:42
Speaker 3: all over the world. At first, it sounds amazing, right,
• 49:45
Speaker 3: But when I really think about it, I'm not in
• 49:46
Speaker 3: a position to actually join him on these vacations. Even
• 49:49
Speaker 3: though I can work from anywhere. Just paying for one
• 49:51
Speaker 3: splurgey meal on a trip would cost the same as
• 49:53
Speaker 3: my budget for two weeks here. So my question is
• 49:57
Speaker 3: how and when do I approach this money conversation. I
• 50:00
Speaker 3: just turned down trips with him. He's currently angling for
• 50:02
Speaker 3: a getaway to the Maldives. We're only six weeks in,
• 50:05
Speaker 3: so is it too soon to talk finances?
• 50:08
Speaker 2: Rebecca Well, I mean, hi, Rebecca, how are you?
• 50:12
  Speaker 5: Hi?
• 50:13
  Speaker 2: Hi?
• 50:13
Speaker 1: This is our special guest, Scottie James. He's heading to
• 50:16
Speaker 1: the Olympics. He's the best snowboarder of all time. So
• 50:19
Speaker 1: you came to the right place because he's got lots
• 50:21
Speaker 1: of answers for you.
• 50:23
Speaker 2: Has it come up yet? Have you guys been on
• 50:25
  Speaker 2: a vacation?
• 50:26
Speaker 1: I mean, usually the person that wants to go on
• 50:28
Speaker 1: the vacation that badly is happy to pay for it,
• 50:31
Speaker 1: but have have you guys been on a vacation like
• 50:33
Speaker 1: that together, like a nice vacation.
• 50:35
Speaker 7: Yet Yeah, we went to Vienna for New Year's He
• 50:39
Speaker 7: paid for most of it, but I had to pay
• 50:41
Speaker 7: for my plane ticket, which wasn't that much, but it's
• 50:44
Speaker 7: still significant for me. So I just kind of have
• 50:46
Speaker 7: to measure, like how many times can I do that.
• 50:48
Speaker 7: We're going to Santorini in a couple weeks, and again
• 50:51
Speaker 7: he's paying for the trip, but I'm paying for my
• 50:53
Speaker 7: plane ticket, and so yeah, it's you know, I'm not
• 50:58
Speaker 7: really sure how to I'm not great at time talking
• 51:00
Speaker 7: about it yet, and I'm not sure because it's so new,
• 51:03
Speaker 7: what the best way to do it is.
• 51:04
  Speaker 1: Yeah, well I don't think for Yeah, I know it's
• 51:06
Speaker 1: not a sexy conversation to talk about finances, especially when
• 51:09
Speaker 1: they're like you're strapped for them, But I think you
• 51:11
Speaker 1: should just have a very honest conversation and just let
• 51:14
Speaker 1: him know, like what your situation is. Be like, I'm sorry,
• 51:17
Speaker 1: I'm not as established like these vacations really, Like even
• 51:19
Speaker 1: the plane ticket is a lot for me, that's like
• 51:21
Speaker 1: my budget for however, I mean, plane tickets are fairly
• 51:24
Speaker 1: if you're in Greece and you're going to Santorini.
• 51:26
Speaker 2: Obviously that's a little bit more affordable.
• 51:29
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, that's true. That's true.
• 51:31
Speaker 7: It's more that they that they add up and yeah,
• 51:35
Speaker 7: and also just things like this summer, I don't like
• 51:37
Speaker 7: to be here for August because it's too hot and
• 51:40
Speaker 7: too crowded. So like, if I were single, I would
• 51:43
Speaker 7: be looking for a house swap or looking to house
• 51:45
Speaker 7: it like something free that I could do.
• 51:48
Speaker 6: Like, he keeps talking.
• 51:48
Speaker 7: About going to the Maldives, and he keeps like hinting,
• 51:51
Speaker 7: like do you want to come or not? He has
• 51:53
Speaker 7: actually directly said that, but he said, like, do you
• 51:55
  Speaker 7: like the Maldives?
• 51:56
Speaker 6: Do you think you'd ever want to come? So it's
• 51:58
Speaker 6: like we're not quite there.
• 51:59
Speaker 7: Yet to like plan that, But then I need to
• 52:02
Speaker 7: also be planning my my life just in case we
• 52:05
  Speaker 7: don't go.
• 52:06
Speaker 1: But I think you should enter this card, Listen, Scott,
• 52:08
Speaker 1: he's married to an heiress, so he's in the same
• 52:10
Speaker 1: boat basically as you are. Okay, but I think you
• 52:18
Speaker 1: should just bring a lightness to this conversation and be like, Listen,
• 52:21
Speaker 1: I am excited about all of this potential, and I
• 52:24
Speaker 1: know we're very new but I just really.
• 52:26
Speaker 2: Want to be transparent.
• 52:27
Speaker 1: This should be like an in person conversation about where
• 52:30
Speaker 1: you are financially, what your plan is. Like everything you
• 52:33
Speaker 1: just mentioned in your letter is worthwhile knowledge. Like you
• 52:36
Speaker 1: move to Greece, you have a year to set up
• 52:37
Speaker 1: your business, you know, or before you have to go
• 52:40
Speaker 1: back to the States, which you definitely don't want to
• 52:41
Speaker 1: do right now. So you, like, you know, just be
• 52:44
Speaker 1: very transparent without asking or expecting, you know what I mean,
• 52:48
Speaker 1: just saying like I want to figure this out together,
• 52:51
Speaker 1: and I don't expect you to pay for everything. I
• 52:53
Speaker 1: want to contribute, So what's the best way I can
• 52:56
Speaker 1: do that. Maybe there's a different way that you can
• 52:58
Speaker 1: contribute that isn't fiduciary, you.
• 53:00
Speaker 2: Know, like, well maybe you can, you know, I don't know.
• 53:03
Speaker 1: Maybe you can be involved in the planning more, or
• 53:05
Speaker 1: you could pick up the restaurants or do some more
• 53:07
Speaker 1: of the legwork, you know, figure out a way to
• 53:09
Speaker 1: contribute if he's cool with it. But I think you
• 53:12
Speaker 1: should just you know, don't make it dire, just say hey,
• 53:15
Speaker 1: I want to just start talking about this. I know
• 53:17
Speaker 1: it's not a sexy conversation, but I want to be transparent,
• 53:19
Speaker 1: and I don't want to like take advantage of this situation,
• 53:22
Speaker 1: you know what I mean, just be very honest. I
• 53:24
Speaker 1: think that gets the ball rolling in the right kind
• 53:26
Speaker 1: of candor and transparency. Especially at the beginning of a relationship.
• 53:31
Speaker 1: It's important to say those things.
• 53:33
Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, Yeah, that's really helpful.
• 53:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, and then also giving him the option of, like,
• 53:39
Speaker 3: if it doesn't work for you know, you to spring
• 53:41
Speaker 3: for the vacation, like I'm totally cool to do a
• 53:43
Speaker 3: house swap, and like I'll see in a month.
• 53:44
Speaker 2: When you get back from the Mamaldi's.
• 53:47
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, threaten him.
• 53:51
Speaker 2: Who knows who I might meet that time? Yeah, who
• 53:53
Speaker 2: knows well to meet while you go to the Maldives.
• 53:58
  Speaker 2: That always.
• 53:58
Speaker 4: Congrats on having the courage to move to try something different.
• 54:04
Speaker 4: I think that I think that takes a lot of carage.
• 54:06
Speaker 4: So respect for doing that.
• 54:08
Speaker 2: Oh thank you. Yeah, it does.
• 54:10
Speaker 1: It does to get up and move to someplace where
• 54:12
Speaker 1: you don't know anyone and so far away, Like I
• 54:15
Speaker 1: love that move and I think you'll you'll get rewarded.
• 54:17
Speaker 1: I mean, there's Greece is always always a good place
• 54:20
  Speaker 1: to be.
• 54:22
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I love it here so far.
• 54:24
Speaker 1: Okay, well, good good luck and yeah, let us know
• 54:27
Speaker 1: how that conversation goes.
• 54:28
Speaker 2: We like follow up calls.
• 54:30
Speaker 6: Okay, awesome, Yeah, thank you so much, Thanks Rebecca. Okay, bye,
• 54:35
  Speaker 6: bye bye.
• 54:36
Speaker 1: We're gonna take a quick break and we're gonna be
• 54:38
Speaker 1: right back to wrap up with Scotty James.
• 54:43
Speaker 2: And we're back with Scotty James.
• 54:46
Speaker 1: Scotty, do you spend a lot of time on the
• 54:47
Speaker 1: mountain when you're not like, do you spend any time
• 54:49
Speaker 1: on the mountain when you're not training?
• 54:51
Speaker 4: Yeah? I would say when my family's around, yes, Like
• 54:55
Speaker 4: my dad loves snowboarding, so he's always keen to be
• 54:59
Speaker 4: on the hill. He's the guy that's up at the
• 55:02
Speaker 4: lift line first and waiting for the chairlift to open.
• 55:05
Speaker 4: So I definitely when he's around, I'm up there just
• 55:08
Speaker 4: for fun and to go cruise around. But to be honest,
• 55:11
Speaker 4: during a competition week, I'm not on the hill too
• 55:13
Speaker 4: much other than competing and training.
• 55:16
Speaker 2: What is your meal right before you compete?
• 55:19
Speaker 4: I love spaghetti bolonnes. Yeah, I just I mean probably
• 55:24
Speaker 4: the night before, because if I had it right before
• 55:26
Speaker 4: I compete might be a little on the heavy side.
• 55:28
Speaker 4: I'm already heavy as I explained earlier. So throwing around
• 55:33
Speaker 4: spaghetti bolonnies in my stomach doing flips is not a
• 55:36
Speaker 4: great outcome, but yeah, probably that I would say.
• 55:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's nice to have to eat spaghetti bolonniers for
• 55:43
Speaker 1: your profession, since you need to carbload and you need
• 55:46
Speaker 1: to get your body stored up.
• 55:48
Speaker 2: It's nice to have that kind of responsibility.
• 55:50
Speaker 4: True, Yeah, this is true.
• 55:53
Speaker 2: And will your family Your family's going to be at
• 55:55
  Speaker 2: the Olympics.
• 55:55
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, so the fan will be there, which will
• 55:58
Speaker 4: be really nice. They I would see. With the last
• 56:01
Speaker 4: Olympics was in China, the country was still closed, so
• 56:05
Speaker 4: it was pretty interesting experience. It was like just us
• 56:09
Speaker 4: and robots. Didn't really feel like an Olympics and robots
• 56:12
Speaker 4: and it was strange. So it wasn't like I didn't
• 56:15
Speaker 4: really feel that the energy last time. So it'd be
• 56:18
Speaker 4: nice to have. You know, Italy will be great. Yeah,
• 56:21
Speaker 4: Italy is a country spaghetti bowl and AI's on hand
• 56:25
Speaker 4: obviously whenever, but it'll be massed out of family. That'll
• 56:29
  Speaker 4: be good.
• 56:30
Speaker 1: Okay, Well, I cannot wait to see you win a
• 56:32
Speaker 1: gold medal, so we will be watching. It was delightful
• 56:36
Speaker 1: speaking with you. I hope I get to meet you
• 56:38
Speaker 1: someday in person. Maybe i'll pop by the Olympics this year.
• 56:41

• 56:43
Speaker 4: If I get the job done, We'll promise you one thing.
• 56:47
Speaker 4: We're going snowboarding together. Let me shake on it. Well okay, yeah,
• 56:53
Speaker 4: I'm going to take a photo of it and be
