- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Bomani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:11Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:15Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:17Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:19Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:21Speaker 1: have a guest join us covering the NBA for ESPN.
- 0:27Speaker 1: He's not quite as Detroit as me sometimes, but Vinny
- 0:29Speaker 1: Goodwill is in the house. What's going on, brother?
- 0:32Speaker 2: What is more Detroit than Stevie Wonder?
- 0:36Speaker 1: Well, he from Saginaw, right?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Technically, but he made his bones. He made his bones
- 0:42Speaker 2: on the west side of Detroit. I hear you.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I'm just saying, at times, at times, because of your
- 0:48Speaker 1: refusal to accept America's team, the Detroit Lions, as your own,
- 0:52Speaker 1: sometimes I feel like, you know, I'm a little realer
- 0:55Speaker 1: than you.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I mean, are they really America's team now?
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'm standing tall and standing proud right now. We're not
- 1:04Speaker 1: going to let a little couple difficult. No, man. I'm
- 1:07Speaker 1: just asking.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I'm just asking if they have met the team right now.
- 1:09Speaker 1: How about this?
- 1:10Speaker 2: How about this?
- 1:11Speaker 1: If they're not America's team, that's fine. They're still Detroit's team.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And some people respect what that means.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I don't know if they're Detroit's team anymore. There's a
- 1:20Speaker 2: team in the city that's a little bit better. Yeah.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Keep cooking.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Thank you. I will continue to cook. Thanks so much. Anyway,
- 1:28Speaker 1: I can't... First of all, have you seen the Diddy
- 1:30Speaker 1: movie yet?
- 1:32Speaker 2: I saw episode one yesterday. I couldn't get through it all,
- 1:35Speaker 2: but baby.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. That's
- 1:40Speaker 1: just the beginning, baby. That is just the beginning. I'm
- 1:44Speaker 1: going to tell you now for people, it is not...
- 1:47Speaker 1: Fitty being petty, which is what we all expected and
- 1:50Speaker 1: why we're watching it. For Diddy, it is something far,
- 1:53Speaker 1: far worse because it is credible and professional and it
- 1:58Speaker 1: is damning. And I will just tell you this, but
- 2:00Speaker 1: by the time you get to the end of it,
- 2:02Speaker 1: you know how messed up R. Kelly has to be
- 2:04Speaker 1: to be more messed up than this guy? Because this
- 2:07Speaker 1: guy is crazy messed up.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Dude. From what I saw yesterday, A, the fact that
- 2:14Speaker 2: you have all this behind the scenes footage from 2024.
- 2:21Speaker 1: He thought he wasn't going to jail.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Oh, that's the narcissism and the arrogance and everything else.
- 2:28Speaker 2: And it's all coming back to bite him. And all
- 2:31Speaker 2: those people were talking like all the people that you
- 2:33Speaker 2: done wrong, like the CC and Y stuff, like from
- 2:37Speaker 2: what was that, 91? Like stuff that if you know,
- 2:40Speaker 2: you know. Because it wasn't like he was known back then.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And when he became known, it was more or less
- 2:46Speaker 2: a footnote. But by the time, like the story about
- 2:50Speaker 2: the Eric Sermon, like getting in the.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Car and we about to catch a fair one. Like
- 2:54Speaker 1: all of that stuff. Yeah, can't give away too much, Gabe.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I'm just telling you guys.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:59Speaker 1: There may be a longer discussion at the end, but
- 3:00Speaker 1: I watched the whole thing yesterday. Oh, no. It's wild.
- 3:04Speaker 1: It's wild. But also wild. They sent your boy Chris
- 3:07Speaker 1: Paul home in the middle of the night. Oh, and
- 3:11Speaker 1: for those who don't know, I wake up this morning
- 3:13Speaker 1: to find out that Chris Paul no longer plays for
- 3:15Speaker 1: the Clippers. And like when I say they sent him home,
- 3:21Speaker 1: it's one thing to just be like, hey, this person
- 3:24Speaker 1: has been released or however you want to spin it. Vinny,
- 3:26Speaker 1: correct me if I'm wrong. They sent him home. They
- 3:30Speaker 1: told him to leave and we'll figure the rest out later.
- 3:33Speaker 2: They were in Atlanta. If my memory serves me correctly,
- 3:38Speaker 2: like don't get me wrong, the Clippers are 5-16. They're
- 3:40Speaker 2: having a miserable season. They're old and slow. And I
- 3:45Speaker 2: can't imagine that that, put it like this. I don't
- 3:48Speaker 2: know how happy it would be to be around someone
- 3:52Speaker 2: like Chris Paul on a daily basis when things are
- 3:55Speaker 2: going well. I can only imagine how miserable it would
- 4:00Speaker 2: be to be around an old Chris Paul when you
- 4:03Speaker 2: are that bad and that old. So clearly, to the
- 4:08Speaker 2: point where you can... Lawrence Franken issued a statement that
- 4:11Speaker 2: he made and he sent out to a bunch of
- 4:13Speaker 2: reporters like, hey, this is not a Chris Paul thought.
- 4:16Speaker 2: We're going to work with him, blah, blah, blah. All
- 4:18Speaker 2: the things. This feels like either A, you said the
- 4:23Speaker 2: wrong thing at the wrong time and you just got
- 4:25Speaker 2: to go, or we are just sick of your shit.
- 4:29Speaker 2: We are sick of you being Chris Paul... And you're
- 4:32Speaker 2: not good enough to be Chris Paul anymore. And we
- 4:36Speaker 2: don't have the tolerance to take you being Chris Paul anymore.
- 4:39Speaker 1: All right. So let's think about a couple of factors here.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Number one, you correct me if I'm wrong, but I
- 4:44Speaker 1: don't really think there's much dispute here. He's the greatest
- 4:47Speaker 1: player in the history of that franchise. He and Blake
- 4:51Speaker 1: Griffin together are the most important players in the history
- 4:54Speaker 1: of that franchise. They are the two that legitimize their
- 4:56Speaker 1: franchise forever. For the first time, Blake Griffin with his
- 5:00Speaker 1: rookie year actually making us care. And then Chris Paul's
- 5:02Speaker 1: arrival actually making them like a legitimate team. They helped
- 5:06Speaker 1: build this building that they're playing in. The fact that
- 5:09Speaker 1: we talk about that, we talk about the Clippers at all. Right.
- 5:12Speaker 1: That they come up. There's a whole generation of fans
- 5:15Speaker 1: that are actually adults right now who cannot understand what
- 5:19Speaker 1: the Clippers meant to me and you. growing up, right?
- 5:23Speaker 1: The biggest laughing stock in Big Four American sports. This
- 5:28Speaker 1: is what they were. He's that guy. He matters to
- 5:31Speaker 1: that team. I don't know exactly how the team feels
- 5:35Speaker 1: about him because he bailed and it got kind of
- 5:38Speaker 1: weird at the end the first time. However, you don't
- 5:41Speaker 1: really send this guy home given that history. They sent
- 5:47Speaker 1: him home. Get out. We can't take it. And I
- 5:51Speaker 1: It can only tie into what you talk about, man.
- 5:54Speaker 1: He is an exhausting guy to be around. Cause let
- 5:56Speaker 1: me tell you what this isn't going to do. This
- 5:58Speaker 1: isn't going to make the Clippers any better. He's out
- 6:01Speaker 1: here getting DNP CDs. Like it's not like he has
- 6:05Speaker 1: to play. And by the way, he's playing terrible, but
- 6:08Speaker 1: it's not like he has to play. And now they
- 6:10Speaker 1: got to take them out so they can get somebody else. No, no, no, no, no.
- 6:13Speaker 1: They just want him out of there. They told him
- 6:16Speaker 1: to call Tyrone and tell him, come on, help you
- 6:19Speaker 1: get your shit.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I am fascinated at what they hope to accomplish by
- 6:25Speaker 2: bringing him back in the first place, right? Were we
- 6:29Speaker 2: ever sure that he and James Harden patched things up
- 6:34Speaker 2: in real time? Because I'm not sure that things were ever,
- 6:39Speaker 2: you know, we back good again. Like, it ended pretty
- 6:43Speaker 2: badly in Houston in 2019. And because so much life
- 6:48Speaker 2: has happened, After 2019, we forget that that was not
- 6:53Speaker 2: that long ago. And those are two very acquired taste
- 6:58Speaker 2: type of ballplayers. And the fact that Jim Harden has
- 7:02Speaker 2: us calling him James Harden again for at least a
- 7:05Speaker 2: little while longer. Like he's playing all-star ball. He's balling.
- 7:09Speaker 2: He's hooping. Like he is hooping. It don't matter because
- 7:13Speaker 2: the team ain't doing much, but he's hooping. You got
- 7:17Speaker 2: Ty Lue who's having a miserable year. You get all
- 7:21Speaker 2: these ways that you have rolled Snake Eyes as a franchise.
- 7:25Speaker 2: And then you got Chris Paul who's not playing no more.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And then he announces somewhere along the way that he
- 7:32Speaker 2: is having a going away tour. Like, this is it. Like, yeah,
- 7:37Speaker 2: as if we didn't see it. And the day that
- 7:39Speaker 2: he announces his retirement, what does Jim Harden do? I'm
- 7:43Speaker 2: going to drop 50 in North Carolina. Should have retired
- 7:47Speaker 2: right then. Should have just called it right then and there.
- 7:50Speaker 2: That's it.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Well, the other thing, this team built itself around a
- 7:58Speaker 1: player who ain't got nothing for you on the soft skills,
- 8:03Speaker 1: the leader stuff. That's Kawhi Leonard, right? Like, this whole
- 8:06Speaker 1: plan was built around a guy who don't really talk
- 8:08Speaker 1: that much, okay? You bring in James Harden, and that's
- 8:12Speaker 1: not really what he does, okay?
- 8:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I imagine that if I'm Chris Paul and I get
- 8:18Speaker 1: in and I look around this team and you know
- 8:20Speaker 1: what that team sounds like it needs, even as old
- 8:23Speaker 1: as they are, it still looks like it needs a grown-up. Now,
- 8:27Speaker 1: doesn't it? And Chris Paul, if he is nothing else,
- 8:30Speaker 1: is a grown-up. Not always a likable grown-up, but a grown-up.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And he was like, yeah, I'm a be that. Except
- 8:39Speaker 1: the problem for Chris Paul is, and it's so weird,
- 8:42Speaker 1: People in real life seem to like Chris Paul a lot.
- 8:46Speaker 1: People in basketball do not.
- 8:50Speaker 2: It is one of those things where for Chris Paul
- 8:54Speaker 2: to be at his height, like literally not like the
- 8:57Speaker 2: height of his career, but at his height, you have
- 9:01Speaker 2: to be a special type of ball player to make
- 9:04Speaker 2: it in the NBA. Like, I don't think we give it.
- 9:08Speaker 2: as much credit because of all the nonsense that, or
- 9:11Speaker 2: not all the nonsense, because of the conversation that has
- 9:14Speaker 2: been around Chris Paul, because of the places that he
- 9:16Speaker 2: has not gone. But the fact that at six feet, nothing.
- 9:21Speaker 2: And as someone who used to have hops, like good
- 9:24Speaker 2: enough hops that could make you dunk on Dwight Howard.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And then you lose that early in your career. You
- 9:30Speaker 2: have to turn yourself into a completely different ball player.
- 9:33Speaker 2: You have to be a special type of ball player
- 9:36Speaker 2: just to get to the NBA at six feet, nothing.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Then you have to be a different type of animal
- 9:41Speaker 2: to be an excellent ball player. Like, Bo, just legitimately
- 9:45Speaker 2: think about this. The list of six feet nothing players
- 9:50Speaker 2: who are undeniably better than Chris Paul, I'd probably say
- 9:55Speaker 2: are two.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Isaiah Thomas.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I don't know, Iverson.
- 10:04Speaker 1: See, that's interesting.
- 10:06Speaker 2: If nothing else, AI showed up.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Yeah, so this is why this is interesting to me, okay? Iverson...
- 10:17Speaker 1: obviously was the best player on a team that went
- 10:18Speaker 1: to the NBA finals, which Chris Paul has never been, right?
- 10:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Iverson was not, however, the floor raiser that Chris Paul,
- 10:31Speaker 1: like 2008 Chris Paul probably had a better basketball season
- 10:36Speaker 1: than 2001 Allen Iverson did. Like, I think 2008 Chris
- 10:40Speaker 1: Paul should have been the MVP that year. I understand
- 10:43Speaker 1: why he wasn't. But 2008 Chris Paul, and this is
- 10:45Speaker 1: before the knee injury, which you talk about, which is
- 10:47Speaker 1: kind of a different incarnation of what Chris Paul was
- 10:50Speaker 1: before then. I can say this. I'm not saying that
- 10:53Speaker 1: Chris Paul is better than Iverson. I'm saying, though, that
- 10:55Speaker 1: there is an interesting discussion to be had about that.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Keep in mind, Chris Paul stood on the NBA at 40,
- 11:00Speaker 1: and at 32, Iverson was cooked.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, like two different types of, you know, ballplayers.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And yeah, it winds up being a different level of,
- 11:10Speaker 2: I'm not going to fight you if you say that
- 11:12Speaker 2: Allen Iverson is not better than Chris Paul. That's not
- 11:16Speaker 2: the thing. But the fact that Chris Paul, like you said,
- 11:20Speaker 2: found a way to reinvent himself as he aged, wound
- 11:24Speaker 2: up being part of some really, really good teams, catching
- 11:28Speaker 2: some bad luck along the way, some of it self-inflicted,
- 11:30Speaker 2: some of it health, whatever you want to call it.
- 11:33Speaker 2: You have to be a certain level of probably ornery.
- 11:38Speaker 2: You probably have to be a different level of ornery.
- 11:41Speaker 2: And you have to ask yourself, wind up like historically,
- 11:45Speaker 2: was Chris Paul wrong place, wrong time? Or was Chris
- 11:48Speaker 2: Paul the common denominator of all the bad things that
- 11:51Speaker 2: wound up happening? And there's no real way to answer
- 11:54Speaker 2: that right now. Because after Clippers going to the Western
- 11:57Speaker 2: Conference Finals in 2015 against the Golden State Warriors team,
- 12:00Speaker 2: that was really, really good. But we're not sure that
- 12:03Speaker 2: they were championship ready. How different is this discussion?
- 12:08Speaker 1: That was the one because that 2014-15 switch, what happened
- 12:13Speaker 1: in between those two seasons is interesting because the last
- 12:17Speaker 1: team to beat the Warriors before everything changed were the
- 12:21Speaker 1: Chris Paul, Donald Sterling, Les Clippers, right? Where they wore
- 12:27Speaker 1: the stuff inside out, took all the stuff off and
- 12:30Speaker 1: everything else. And they beat the Warriors in seven and
- 12:32Speaker 1: Joe Lake got Mark Jackson the look up out of
- 12:35Speaker 1: there because it was beef, right? And the next thing
- 12:39Speaker 1: you know, the Warriors are everything. And for people who
- 12:41Speaker 1: don't remember, the Clippers were up 3-1 on the Rockets
- 12:45Speaker 1: in the second round of the playoffs, and they are
- 12:48Speaker 1: up big in game six. And led by Josh Smith
- 12:54Speaker 1: with James Harden on the bench in L.A., the Rockets
- 13:00Speaker 1: walked them down. Now, to be fair, that was a
- 13:03Speaker 1: team where the Clippers starting five was the best five-man
- 13:06Speaker 1: lineup in the NBA.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yep, yep.
- 13:09Speaker 1: And they had nobody behind them. And they just ran
- 13:12Speaker 1: out of gas. So that's the thing to me is
- 13:13Speaker 1: that if they win that series, they probably go play
- 13:16Speaker 1: the Warriors and get run out of the building because
- 13:18Speaker 1: it wasn't like they were any more accomplished than the
- 13:20Speaker 1: Warriors were.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Well, here's the other thing. This is the thing that
- 13:24Speaker 2: we forget. Do you remember what happened to the Clippers
- 13:26Speaker 2: the year before that after they beat the Warriors in
- 13:29Speaker 2: round one? Who they played in round two and how
- 13:32Speaker 2: that ended up? Do you remember that?
- 13:35Speaker 1: In 2014, did they play the Spurs in the second round?
- 13:38Speaker 2: No, they played the Thunder. And that was the Chris
- 13:41Speaker 2: Paul meltdown game in game five where he fouls Russ
- 13:45Speaker 2: taking that wild three. And then when Russ makes all
- 13:49Speaker 2: three free throws. And then on the last play, he
- 13:53Speaker 2: gets stripped maybe by Reggie Jackson. Driving like he drove
- 13:57Speaker 2: to like it's all these little inflection plays that that
- 14:02Speaker 2: sometimes you're in the wrong place at the wrong time,
- 14:04Speaker 2: and sometimes it can't always be you, and that's where
- 14:09Speaker 2: it has gotten. Because think about how many players have
- 14:12Speaker 2: played as long as Chris Paul and have been as
- 14:14Speaker 2: great as Chris Paul, but have never gotten over the hump.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Usually you wind up, by hook or crook, getting something.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Like it's the Karl Malones, it's the John Stocktons, but
- 14:26Speaker 2: the list ain't that long. Like as much as the
- 14:28Speaker 2: championships have gotten monopolized, Usually you wind up, like Clyde
- 14:32Speaker 2: Drexler found a way. He was wound up, he was
- 14:35Speaker 2: an unlucky player, and then he was no longer unlucky.
- 14:37Speaker 2: David Robinson was gifted Tim Duncan. Like the one gripe
- 14:41Speaker 2: I have sometimes about John Stockton is you can't just
- 14:45Speaker 2: be 16 and 12 all the time. It can't just
- 14:47Speaker 2: be I'm taking the playbook and executing it properly and
- 14:51Speaker 2: I'm not adjusting to whatever the game is calling for.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Chris Paul can probably execute the game plan before life
- 14:59Speaker 2: alters it as well as anybody in the history of
- 15:02Speaker 2: the game, right? What happens with playoff basketball is inevitably
- 15:07Speaker 2: what happens when the game calls for you to be
- 15:09Speaker 2: something different than what you planned for. And that's where
- 15:13Speaker 2: Josh Smith happens. And that's where, wait, why did I
- 15:16Speaker 2: file Russell Westbrook taking a three when we are up four?
- 15:21Speaker 2: He's taking a three. This is what we want. Like,
- 15:23Speaker 2: it sounds like we dogging on Chris Paul here. It
- 15:25Speaker 2: just shows. how thin the margins are when you are
- 15:29Speaker 2: that great and you're trying to get rings in the
- 15:32Speaker 2: Spurs slash Warriors era of the Western Conference.
- 15:38Speaker 1: To this day, and this cannot be ignored, no matter
- 15:41Speaker 1: how analytical the game gets and everything else. Ain't no
- 15:45Speaker 1: more skill more important than going and getting buckets. A bucket.
- 15:49Speaker 1: But I can go get buckets. Boys, I got 35
- 15:53Speaker 1: for us tonight. And Chris Paul, in his way, could
- 15:56Speaker 1: do that. What was that game in that playoff year
- 16:00Speaker 1: they went to the finals in Phoenix? I don't think
- 16:02Speaker 1: it was against the Bucs. But you remember the game
- 16:04Speaker 1: I'm talking about where he just kept walking them. Or
- 16:06Speaker 1: was it the next year? He just kept walking them
- 16:07Speaker 1: down to the elbow.
- 16:08Speaker 2: No, no, no. It was when he beat the Clippers
- 16:11Speaker 2: and he forced Pat Bev into the ultimate villain move.
- 16:15Speaker 2: That was the clinching. That was the clinching. I think
- 16:17Speaker 2: he scored 40.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Yes, and he just went and got bucket after bucket
- 16:21Speaker 1: after bucket. And that's almost the exception that proves the
- 16:24Speaker 1: rule in this case that we're talking about. Like the
- 16:26Speaker 1: thing about Isaiah Thomas that made him so amazing, especially
- 16:29Speaker 1: for the day and age that he played in is,
- 16:32Speaker 1: all right, I'm going to go get these buckets. If
- 16:34Speaker 1: y'all just ride along with me, I'm the one guy
- 16:36Speaker 1: in the building for this team. They can go get
- 16:39Speaker 1: these buckets. I got you. Don't worry about it. Because
- 16:42Speaker 1: sometimes only thing that's going to work is I can
- 16:44Speaker 1: go get these buckets. Giannis, when he had that game
- 16:47Speaker 1: six to win that series against Phoenix, it's just, hey, man,
- 16:50Speaker 1: I'm going to go get these buckets. That's what makes
- 16:52Speaker 1: Allen Iverson at six foot so amazing. Again, Isaiah Thomas,
- 16:55Speaker 1: it's really difficult for a guy that size to say,
- 16:58Speaker 1: you know what? I'm going to go out here and
- 17:01Speaker 1: do this. A guy like the other Isaiah Thomas who
- 17:03Speaker 1: could do that in the regular season, but not really
- 17:06Speaker 1: when it comes down to it in the playoffs. Like
- 17:08Speaker 1: at that point, he ain't really going to be able
- 17:10Speaker 1: to give it to you. Chris Paul lacked that single
- 17:15Speaker 1: most important skill, right? Like that's why you talk about
- 17:19Speaker 1: Chris Paul versus Steph Curry. That's the giant difference right there, man.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Steph Curry's like, hey, 35? Yeah, I can do that.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Easy.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:28Speaker 2: And you make alterations through the game as the game goes.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Like maybe, maybe Zeke says, Michael Jordan's guarding me. I
- 17:36Speaker 2: have to go score 35 tonight. He's actually done that.
- 17:40Speaker 2: And these are against, you accept the challenge of, you
- 17:44Speaker 2: know what, this is going to be a little uncomfortable
- 17:46Speaker 2: for me. I might have to take a lot of
- 17:48Speaker 2: shots that go against the percentages and everything else, but
- 17:51Speaker 2: who else going to do it but me? And you
- 17:53Speaker 2: got to be able to take that. And Giannis, when
- 17:55Speaker 2: he made all them free throws, Who else going to
- 17:57Speaker 2: do it but me? Inevitably, I think you have to
- 18:01Speaker 2: do things that make you feel a little uncomfortable, that
- 18:04Speaker 2: make you step outside yourself. Michael Jordan in the 91
- 18:07Speaker 2: NBA Finals averaged 11.5 assists. You think he was thinking about,
- 18:11Speaker 2: I'm going to pass to John Paxson a whole bunch
- 18:13Speaker 2: this series? No, that's just what the game called for
- 18:17Speaker 2: in the guys whose regular season and playoff numbers mirror
- 18:22Speaker 2: the exact same things. Almost to the degree of, you know,
- 18:25Speaker 2: like low turnover guys. Like in the NFL, the guys
- 18:28Speaker 2: who don't throw interceptions. That means you're not taking the
- 18:31Speaker 2: chances of throwing it into those holes and making guys
- 18:36Speaker 2: run to get to those spots. Same way for point guards.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Sometimes you got to throw those passes just so everybody
- 18:41Speaker 2: can look alive. You know what I mean? Like you
- 18:43Speaker 2: get that guy to say, hey, man, look alive. Keep
- 18:45Speaker 2: your head up. Like Magic Johnson throwing the ball to
- 18:47Speaker 2: the back of your head. Hey, man, I wasn't open. Yes,
- 18:49Speaker 2: you was. you open because I synced it. Like, one
- 18:54Speaker 2: of those type of things. And that might be the
- 18:56Speaker 2: one separator between the tier that I consider to be
- 19:00Speaker 2: the ultimate tier, the Magic Johnson Zeke tier, to everybody
- 19:05Speaker 2: that comes below them. And I mean everybody that comes
- 19:09Speaker 2: below them.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Oh, wow. But yeah, homie, what I said, man, he
- 19:16Speaker 1: had to put it on the Instagram stories. Like, that's...
- 19:18Speaker 1: That's the thing about coming back. I talked about this
- 19:21Speaker 1: in the context of LeBron, which is a different case,
- 19:24Speaker 1: but once you decide to come back at this age,
- 19:29Speaker 1: every year, the odds of you going out saying get
- 19:32Speaker 1: higher and higher and higher. And like LeBron hanging out
- 19:37Speaker 1: at the end of that game to try to make
- 19:38Speaker 1: sure he got his double digits. Ooh, that wasn't, that
- 19:42Speaker 1: wasn't going out happy.
- 19:43Speaker 2: I mean, can you imagine? And let me correct myself
- 19:49Speaker 2: before it. aggregators go. Like, Steph is in that GOAT category, too.
- 19:53Speaker 2: He's just a different type of point guard. But think
- 19:56Speaker 2: about this. Can you imagine J.J. Redick knowing what the
- 20:02Speaker 2: score is, knowing that only LeBron is the only regular
- 20:06Speaker 2: out there, And LeBron is out there, hey, man, I
- 20:08Speaker 2: got to get this side step three to get these buckets.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Because the few plays before that, Bo, he was trying
- 20:15Speaker 2: to just score. And it wasn't working. And that's where
- 20:21Speaker 2: you are about to be 41 years old in a
- 20:23Speaker 2: few weeks. And you're coming off of an old man injury.
- 20:27Speaker 2: And you're walking into the new world order. And that
- 20:31Speaker 2: is the, you know, okay, maybe you've earned the right
- 20:34Speaker 2: to say, I want to score. my double digits. Like
- 20:37Speaker 2: this means that much to me. All right, cool. But
- 20:40Speaker 2: it still feels a little unseemly.
- 20:43Speaker 1: So I will say this. I do not believe that
- 20:46Speaker 1: he would have done that in a game that mattered.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Right. Or under circumstances under which the game mattered. Okay.
- 20:53Speaker 1: So if he's got six points and it's 90 seconds
- 20:58Speaker 1: left and it's a four point game, I don't think
- 21:01Speaker 1: he's doing that.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Like, I think that there was a measure of, hey, well,
- 21:06Speaker 1: we got to lose right now. He's only played five games,
- 21:09Speaker 1: but it's clear he is dialing back usage. Like, I
- 21:11Speaker 1: think he seems to have made on one hand, I
- 21:15Speaker 1: think I would say that he has made an adjustment
- 21:17Speaker 1: to what the new world order is. I would also
- 21:20Speaker 1: say that he was over there lollygagging. with the other
- 21:24Speaker 1: team during the game and JJ had to call a
- 21:27Speaker 1: timeout on Monday night. Did you see that?
- 21:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw that. Once again.
- 21:31Speaker 1: And so I want to see it, but I bring
- 21:33Speaker 1: that up to say I want to see just how
- 21:35Speaker 1: all that plays because JJ is a crazy person coaching
- 21:38Speaker 1: that team. Like, we all understand this. Like, is that
- 21:42Speaker 1: something that you should do it on purpose? Like, you
- 21:44Speaker 1: got to know if you LeBron, you can't. Like, we
- 21:46Speaker 1: can't be doing this.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Okay, but to borrow a phrase from one of those
- 21:52Speaker 2: reality shows, Who going to check me, boo? Like, who's
- 21:58Speaker 2: going to check LeBron James at this stage of his life,
- 22:02Speaker 2: at this.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Stage of his career? But that's the point. He's as
- 22:05Speaker 1: checkable as he's ever been right now. He had a
- 22:08Speaker 1: number three option on the offense. He not the best
- 22:12Speaker 1: player on the team. Like, if he is asking who
- 22:15Speaker 1: going to check me, it is possible he could find out.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I will say this. No longer number one option? Yes.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Let's see how long he's the number three option. Let's
- 22:29Speaker 2: see him revving it up and getting comfortable playing like
- 22:34Speaker 2: himself again. It's one thing to do when you come
- 22:37Speaker 2: in and the Lakers are a top three team in
- 22:40Speaker 2: the Western Conference, then Oklahoma City and Houston. It's clear
- 22:44Speaker 2: that those are the three best teams as of this
- 22:46Speaker 2: moment right now. You have to come in and sort
- 22:50Speaker 2: of fit in. But the first sign of turbulence, it's
- 22:54Speaker 2: going to be really hard for you to fight against
- 22:57Speaker 2: your natural instinct, which is to put your hands on
- 22:59Speaker 2: the throttle and go and pull the nose up. And
- 23:04Speaker 2: you're still LeBron James. No matter what winds up happening,
- 23:08Speaker 2: whatever jokes and how we kicking it here, he's still
- 23:12Speaker 2: an incredibly effective ball player who can have an incredible
- 23:16Speaker 2: effect on the game just by his mere presence. Like,
- 23:21Speaker 2: having to blend in right now is one thing. Like,
- 23:23Speaker 2: do you know what people are doing on the internet?
- 23:25Speaker 2: Because I know you're not on Twitter as much anymore.
- 23:27Speaker 2: And I don't know if people are doing this on threads.
- 23:29Speaker 2: People are doing one of these blind reveals. We're doing
- 23:33Speaker 2: side-by-side this player's first five years against this player's first
- 23:38Speaker 2: five years. And we want y'all to find out. Y'all,
- 23:41Speaker 2: we want you to tell us whose numbers is these?
- 23:45Speaker 2: Rookie year, 7.6. Second year, 15 points. Third year, 19-9.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Fifth year, 22-5. Next year, 28-5. You know who they comparing? Beaumont?
- 24:00Speaker 1: LeBron?
- 24:01Speaker 2: LeBron? No. <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>
- 24:04Speaker 2: I said rookie year, seven points a game.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Oh.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Austin Reeves and Kobe Bean Bryant.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Oh. That's the difference is I think Austin Reeves was
- 24:15Speaker 1: about 27 as a rookie. He played seven years of college.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Hey, it's just the inflation of today's game on a
- 24:24Speaker 2: number of levels. It is just a crazy time. It
- 24:27Speaker 2: is a crazy time, man.
- 24:30Speaker 1: I will just say this, and my inclination is not
- 24:34Speaker 1: to say that you're wrong about how effective LeBron is
- 24:37Speaker 1: as a ball player right now or everything else. He
- 24:39Speaker 1: is currently putting up splits of 46, 32, 55. And
- 24:45Speaker 1: that 55% for the free throw line is on 20 attempts.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Like it's not a like super tiny sample that we're
- 24:52Speaker 1: working with here. If it gets to a place of
- 24:56Speaker 1: him trying to dial it up, because that's what he
- 24:57Speaker 1: usually does. There's questions. You know what I mean? It's
- 25:02Speaker 1: going to be interesting to watch. My inclination is to
- 25:05Speaker 1: believe that he could find a way. I've always thought
- 25:07Speaker 1: that the game for him was going to be aging
- 25:09Speaker 1: into being a bit of a point power forward. That's
- 25:13Speaker 1: what I'd always thought. I just thought it would start
- 25:15Speaker 1: happening maybe 10 years ago. Not 10, but you know
- 25:18Speaker 1: what I mean. He's flipped the math on aging so crazy.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Think about this. This is 10 seasons since the 3-1
- 25:27Speaker 1: comeback against the Warriors. Like, that's how long this dude's
- 25:31Speaker 1: been playing. That is, wow, it is amazing. But it's
- 25:36Speaker 1: going to be interesting to see, especially if he keeps
- 25:38Speaker 1: doing stuff like what had JJ so mad. That ain't
- 25:42Speaker 1: going to send him home, right? But they were okay
- 25:46Speaker 1: without him.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, okay, see, that's the right word. You
- 25:51Speaker 2: said the right word. They were okay. okay without him
- 25:55Speaker 2: like the net rating is a little bit better than
- 25:58Speaker 2: what the record is or the record is better than
- 26:00Speaker 2: the net rating I will give how about this and
- 26:03Speaker 2: this is a phrase that I find myself using all
- 26:05Speaker 2: the time a little bit now I'll just be wrong
- 26:10Speaker 2: I'll consider myself to be wrong if LeBron is totally
- 26:14Speaker 2: washed because I've never seen it and I've never like
- 26:17Speaker 2: at least from a statistical standpoint I will allow for
- 26:22Speaker 2: LeBron coming off of that type of leg injury, being
- 26:25Speaker 2: this age and this level of experience, I tend to
- 26:29Speaker 2: believe he will turn it up in some way. It
- 26:33Speaker 2: may not get to the point where he's 25-7-7 or 27-7-7.
- 26:37Speaker 2: It may not get that high, but it will not
- 26:41Speaker 2: look the way that it looks now five games in.
- 26:44Speaker 2: I'm willing to give it another 15 games. to see
- 26:48Speaker 2: where it actually lands, and to see how JJ and
- 26:53Speaker 2: Luka and Austin Reeves and all these guys works itself in.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I just don't tend to believe the Lakers are as
- 27:00Speaker 2: good as their record, even sans LeBron and with LeBron
- 27:04Speaker 2: in this small sample size.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, their point differential indicates a okay team.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Here's the thing. If they are going to win multiple
- 27:18Speaker 2: playoff series, as in more than one, as in we're
- 27:21Speaker 2: getting to the Western Conference Finals to be the runner-up
- 27:24Speaker 2: to the Oklahoma City Thunder, then... Which everybody is. Then
- 27:32Speaker 2: you're going to have to win on offense. With their
- 27:34Speaker 2: roster that's currently constructed, because we've seen Luka steal you
- 27:37Speaker 2: a series. Luka has stolen playoff series before. He's capable
- 27:42Speaker 2: of doing that. You're going to have to win Strictly
- 27:45Speaker 2: on offense with Luka, I think he's at a 38 usage.
- 27:50Speaker 2: That doesn't look like it is sustainable for real life
- 27:54Speaker 2: winning in today's basketball with basketball being played at the
- 27:57Speaker 2: pace that it is played at, where it is breakneck speed,
- 28:01Speaker 2: where if you play hard like the Boston Celtics or
- 28:05Speaker 2: the Phoenix Suns or the Orlando Magic, you're going to
- 28:07Speaker 2: win more games than talent says you should. And I
- 28:11Speaker 2: don't know how much playoff basketball will slow that up.
- 28:13Speaker 2: And therefore, I am not sure how much real winning
- 28:17Speaker 2: the Lakers can do against teams that are more talented
- 28:21Speaker 2: and more versatile when it matters.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Now, I will say this, and I want to put
- 28:26Speaker 1: a pin in something you just said and then go
- 28:28Speaker 1: over to the break. But in the West, the Lakers
- 28:30Speaker 1: have the second best record. Point differential tied for six
- 28:36Speaker 1: right around the surprising Phoenix Suns. You know what I mean?
- 28:42Speaker 2: The team that gave them the beats the other night.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Right. Now, granted, Phoenix did put the hurt on him.
- 28:46Speaker 1: But given, though, that is the Lakers playing a lot
- 28:49Speaker 1: without LeBron, some in and out of Luka. There are
- 28:54Speaker 1: things to be brought up to mitigate the point, but
- 28:57Speaker 1: it is fair to question whether or not this is
- 29:00Speaker 1: a play-in team with a 13-5 record right now. But
- 29:04Speaker 1: coming up next, I want to talk to you about
- 29:06Speaker 1: the Thunder, but you just hit on something I wanted
- 29:07Speaker 1: to talk about, which is the pace of play in
- 29:10Speaker 1: the NBA and some of the consequences that we're seeing
- 29:12Speaker 1: from that. All right, we are back with Vinny Goodwill
- 29:16Speaker 1: of ESPN. And you made the point there talking about
- 29:19Speaker 1: the way that basketball is played in the NBA right now.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Because look, LeBron is old. Luka is not the most
- 29:24Speaker 1: durable player. And you mentioned Luka having a 38% usage rate,
- 29:28Speaker 1: which is really, really, really high. And seems unsustainable. Like
- 29:35Speaker 1: James Harden. It is amazing that James Harden has had
- 29:38Speaker 1: the career that he has had when you really stop.
- 29:40Speaker 1: and think about the usage numbers that he's put up
- 29:41Speaker 1: in the numbers of games that he's put up. Like,
- 29:44Speaker 1: I mean, look, he's had stretches obviously where he hasn't
- 29:47Speaker 1: been the healthiest, but the fact that he can still
- 29:49Speaker 1: be this good with all the miles that he has
- 29:51Speaker 1: is actually really impressive because I think that we'd all
- 29:54Speaker 1: agree at this point, I was reading something. I think
- 29:55Speaker 1: Mark Medina had this where he talked to a lot
- 29:57Speaker 1: of guys like Gary VD, the former trainer, of the
- 29:59Speaker 1: Lakers and, you know, other people in the body space
- 30:02Speaker 1: in the NBA. And it's just the style of play
- 30:06Speaker 1: and the pace of play in the NBA is putting
- 30:08Speaker 1: so many more miles on guys on top of the
- 30:11Speaker 1: fact that they're racking up so many more miles before
- 30:14Speaker 1: they even get to the NBA. And it's leading to
- 30:17Speaker 1: the consequences that we see all over the league, which
- 30:19Speaker 1: is the best players not really playing that much, right? Like,
- 30:24Speaker 1: I wonder if long-term it means that we're actually going
- 30:26Speaker 1: to see something where careers perhaps get a little shorter
- 30:29Speaker 1: because the teams become a little more apprehensive about paying
- 30:32Speaker 1: older guys a lot of money, you know, and so
- 30:34Speaker 1: it all kind of dials back or whatever it is.
- 30:36Speaker 1: But it got me to thinking about something, and I'm
- 30:39Speaker 1: curious what you think about this. So we often see
- 30:42Speaker 1: the argument of, well, the NBA season needs to be shorter. Okay,
- 30:45Speaker 1: never going to happen, right? They're not giving back money.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Every game makes people money. They're not giving back money.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Hard stuff. But... I was thinking about some of this
- 30:57Speaker 1: doom and gloom stuff I'd be reading about the internet
- 30:59Speaker 1: and about AI, for example, where we know all the
- 31:02Speaker 1: terrible consequences of AI. We don't even know if AI
- 31:05Speaker 1: is actually going to prove itself to be profitable, all
- 31:08Speaker 1: of these things. But AI has been introduced into the system,
- 31:13Speaker 1: into the universe, right? Everybody's out here using it. And
- 31:15Speaker 1: one thing that history has indicated to us is once
- 31:19Speaker 1: technology becomes available, people don't stop using it. Right, right?
- 31:24Speaker 1: Like you're not going to, now the AI is here.
- 31:27Speaker 1: No explanation of how much electricity it uses. how bad
- 31:31Speaker 1: it is for the earth, how bad it is for
- 31:32Speaker 1: the people, all of this stuff. Too bad, so sad,
- 31:35Speaker 1: it's here. People are going to be talking to Siri
- 31:36Speaker 1: and Alexa or whatever it is. Once this has become available,
- 31:40Speaker 1: the society is not going to walk back from it.
- 31:43Speaker 1: And I feel like all these advances that we're talking
- 31:45Speaker 1: about in basketball and the way things run schematically are very,
- 31:49Speaker 1: very similar. It is breaking the bodies of the players.
- 31:53Speaker 1: The bodies are not meant to withstand that which we
- 31:56Speaker 1: are discussing. But there is no dialing it back. As
- 31:59Speaker 1: long as there's one person that's going to use the schemes,
- 32:02Speaker 1: then everybody else is going to have to do what's
- 32:03Speaker 1: necessary to keep up with it. And this is just
- 32:06Speaker 1: what it's going to be.
- 32:08Speaker 2: You know, it's funny. I've been talking to multiple people
- 32:12Speaker 2: in the medical community, like on teams, who have to
- 32:16Speaker 2: deal with the bodies. And not everybody has the same answer.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Like it's different degrees of depth of what they believe
- 32:23Speaker 2: the problem and or solution is. But the commonality is this,
- 32:29Speaker 2: and I want to see what you think about this. A,
- 32:32Speaker 2: they agree with you and me completely on too much
- 32:36Speaker 2: specialization at an early age. One said, man, it's like
- 32:39Speaker 2: watching a timing belt on your car being worn out
- 32:41Speaker 2: just because it's what it is. It's only got so
- 32:45Speaker 2: many miles on the car before the car starts fighting
- 32:49Speaker 2: back against you. That's where the bodies are. And maybe
- 32:52Speaker 2: this is something for all the professional sports leagues to
- 32:56Speaker 2: get together on as opposed to, man, you're a basketball
- 32:59Speaker 2: player at age 10. That's exactly what you're going to be.
- 33:01Speaker 2: That's only what you're going to be. Like that cannot
- 33:03Speaker 2: be healthy for the body. And I'm sure it probably hurts,
- 33:07Speaker 2: maybe not football, but I would assume baseball just because
- 33:10Speaker 2: like pitching, arm motions, like stuff like that. The other
- 33:14Speaker 2: thing is this ball. And I'm going to see what you,
- 33:16Speaker 2: the other two things that I thought were really fascinating
- 33:18Speaker 2: is this. And I'm reading from like a pretty extensive
- 33:21Speaker 2: text message. Practicing no longer happens. Individual skill work happens
- 33:29Speaker 2: far more. So you're stressing the muscle without doing anything
- 33:34Speaker 2: to simulate gameplay. Like you're just doing an exercise over
- 33:39Speaker 2: and over again. And because guys aren't used to practicing anymore,
- 33:43Speaker 2: teams don't really practice as much. Like they talk about,
- 33:46Speaker 2: you know, staying off your body and everything else because
- 33:48Speaker 2: of the miles that you're doing throughout the course of
- 33:51Speaker 2: the game. because of the miles that you've already put
- 33:53Speaker 2: on your body, because of the miles that you might
- 33:55Speaker 2: put on your body during the summer when you're hooping
- 33:56Speaker 2: at lifetime fitness and everything else, all the skill work,
- 33:59Speaker 2: you're not practicing together and you're not playing live. So
- 34:02Speaker 2: you're only playing live during the course of the game.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Your body isn't used to that type of stress. And
- 34:08Speaker 2: then it's the stress of breakneck speed basketball, big time problems.
- 34:13Speaker 2: And finally, and this is, there's a couple others, but
- 34:15Speaker 2: I don't want to say it out loud. But the
- 34:17Speaker 2: other one, two people have told me That basketball shoes
- 34:22Speaker 2: and the equipment is shit today. They say the shoes
- 34:25Speaker 2: are just bad. They think that because you are wearing
- 34:29Speaker 2: a low-cut shoe and you are wrapping your ankle around it,
- 34:33Speaker 2: that that's compensating. All you're doing is sending the stress
- 34:37Speaker 2: to other parts of your body. Now, what's right above
- 34:40Speaker 2: the ankle? And what injuries do we see all the
- 34:42Speaker 2: time nowadays? Yeah. And the hamstring. And did you hear
- 34:49Speaker 2: about our boy Zion?
- 34:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Grade two adductor strain. That's three to six weeks. Come on, man.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Gary Vee, I think the point he made in
- 35:01Speaker 1: the Medina piece that I thought was so interesting was
- 35:03Speaker 1: just that. He's like, look, man, if you do the
- 35:05Speaker 1: same thing over and over again, everything that's small in
- 35:09Speaker 1: your mechanics just becomes exacerbated because you're doing that thing
- 35:14Speaker 1: over and over and over again. So I'm just throwing
- 35:16Speaker 1: this out there. One of your legs is a little
- 35:18Speaker 1: shorter than the other one. Then you're going to be
- 35:20Speaker 1: everything that comes from the compensation of that. You're going
- 35:22Speaker 1: to be doing over and over and over again. And
- 35:25Speaker 1: that's going to lead to these problems. You know what
- 35:28Speaker 1: I mean? Like the overuse goes from there. Had another
- 35:30Speaker 1: person who works in college sports and he made the
- 35:32Speaker 1: point that with basketball, where he's like, the problem is
- 35:34Speaker 1: we can't get these guys to stop doing these drills, right?
- 35:37Speaker 1: We can't get these guys doing all of this. But
- 35:39Speaker 1: I think you hit on a very important point, which
- 35:41Speaker 1: is it's cats are going to start. a big campaign
- 35:44Speaker 1: from all the leagues to be like, hey, play everything, right?
- 35:49Speaker 1: MLB put some money in, the hockey people, I guess
- 35:51Speaker 1: they kind of could too, right? Everybody put some money
- 35:55Speaker 1: in and encourage everybody to play everything, to cross-train, need
- 35:58Speaker 1: a new bow nose campaign.
- 36:01Speaker 2: That would be great. Like, we are just old enough
- 36:07Speaker 2: to have played, even if you didn't play like high
- 36:10Speaker 2: level stuff, but you played everything. Even if it's just
- 36:13Speaker 2: playing in the street, like playing with guys, you know
- 36:16Speaker 2: what I mean? Like playing stickball, so to speak. You
- 36:18Speaker 2: know what I'm like? You still did other things besides
- 36:22Speaker 2: the one sport all year round, especially if you are
- 36:26Speaker 2: in a place where you got easy access to a
- 36:29Speaker 2: gym or there's great weather, so you're going to be
- 36:30Speaker 2: outside every day or whatever it is. Like people would say, man,
- 36:34Speaker 2: y'all was playing on concrete and that messed your knees up. Maybe,
- 36:37Speaker 2: but there was also times that we just didn't. But
- 36:40Speaker 2: we played other things now because guys have access to
- 36:43Speaker 2: gyms and you get access to trainers and you get
- 36:45Speaker 2: the AAU circuit and everything else. Like that's going to
- 36:49Speaker 2: be where the NBA has to go to AAU and
- 36:53Speaker 2: either completely take it over and remake it so that
- 36:55Speaker 2: the product that you get when you get to the
- 36:57Speaker 2: NBA is a little bit more sustainable. Or like you said,
- 37:01Speaker 2: and partner with the NFL, partner with Major League Baseball
- 37:05Speaker 2: and for something to where not everybody's just playing one
- 37:09Speaker 2: singular sport. I think it creates better athletes, to be
- 37:12Speaker 2: perfectly honest with you.
- 37:13Speaker 1: It creates better athletes, but I think the thing that
- 37:15Speaker 1: sucks about it is everybody's afraid that they're slipping behind, right?
- 37:19Speaker 1: Because somebody else is working just a little bit more.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Somebody else's game is getting to this place. And I
- 37:25Speaker 1: hear you, but you're not going to get to a
- 37:28Speaker 1: place where I believe that there is anything more important
- 37:31Speaker 1: in terms of where you're going to end up than
- 37:34Speaker 1: natural physical endowments, right? Like, I still think to this
- 37:39Speaker 1: day that if somebody, take Joel Embiid, for example. If
- 37:44Speaker 1: somebody had found Joel Embiid in Cameroon when Joel Embiid
- 37:50Speaker 1: was 16 years old, just found him, and he was
- 37:55Speaker 1: as rough and raw and everything else with his game,
- 37:58Speaker 1: drop him in the draft at 18, he go number one. Right.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Like somebody sees the body and sees what is possible.
- 38:06Speaker 1: They still go take that cat in this or even
- 38:09Speaker 1: if they're not in the end game. I guess what
- 38:12Speaker 1: I am not sure how much of this ground and
- 38:14Speaker 1: pound that is happening to these these kids when they're
- 38:18Speaker 1: in middle and high school. I'm not sure they're actually
- 38:20Speaker 1: getting returns out of.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Well, it's almost like what you say about the NFL
- 38:25Speaker 2: with the running backs.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:26Speaker 2: When a runner, like you pay for the yards, someone
- 38:28Speaker 2: else pays for the carries. Like the high school, high
- 38:31Speaker 2: schools and AAU, they, I won't say they're getting the
- 38:34Speaker 2: best versions because the players aren't as physically mature and
- 38:37Speaker 2: they're not getting the best coaching and everything else, but
- 38:40Speaker 2: they're getting something out of it that the NBA has
- 38:43Speaker 2: to wind up paying for. That's why not just even
- 38:46Speaker 2: the practicality of, let's say you're playing 10 fewer games.
- 38:50Speaker 2: You think None of the injuries are going to happen.
- 38:52Speaker 2: And I'm like, generally, I rock with Steve Kerr on
- 38:55Speaker 2: a bunch of things on a bunch of different levels.
- 38:58Speaker 2: It's just that on this one, and there's this brigade
- 39:00Speaker 2: of people who are just saying, shorten the season. Are
- 39:03Speaker 2: you people high? It's not just, is it not practical
- 39:08Speaker 2: to give up 10 games and everything else? What you
- 39:10Speaker 2: think these dudes going to do during the days that
- 39:13Speaker 2: they don't have games is not going to stop them
- 39:15Speaker 2: from doing the skill work. It's not going to stop them.
- 39:18Speaker 2: From training and everything else, they're already not practicing. It
- 39:21Speaker 2: doesn't mean they're going to stay off of their feet.
- 39:24Speaker 2: And then what happens when the injuries go then? Oh,
- 39:26Speaker 2: let's cut the season. 62 games. Where is the line
- 39:28Speaker 2: of demarcation? the nfl is going to go to an
- 39:31Speaker 2: 18 game regular season regular season season yeah pretty soon
- 39:36Speaker 2: and you're saying let's cut it down to 72 are y'all.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Crazy no it's just it's it's tough for the league, man.
- 39:45Speaker 1: And it's a problem that's bigger than everybody else. And
- 39:48Speaker 1: the problem, obviously, is caused by the fact it's a
- 39:50Speaker 1: lot of money in that summer basketball. It's a lot
- 39:53Speaker 1: of money in this game of training and all of
- 39:56Speaker 1: these things. And I'm just not... I saw Andre Miller
- 40:00Speaker 1: on one of those podcasts, and he was like, I
- 40:03Speaker 1: ain't paying no money for no trainers, man. He was like,
- 40:06Speaker 1: you know what you got to do? Play five-on-five basketball.
- 40:12Speaker 1: You're never going to convince me that there's anything better
- 40:15Speaker 1: for somebody's game than playing five-on-five basketball.
- 40:19Speaker 2: I don't get why playing basketball is such– like this ew,
- 40:27Speaker 2: stinky sort of thing that guys have nowadays. The only
- 40:31Speaker 2: way you get better is being able to read and
- 40:34Speaker 2: react to the way, and especially because today's game is
- 40:37Speaker 2: almost so homogenized, where it's gonna be high pick and roll,
- 40:41Speaker 2: it's gonna be draw two, swing, whatever it is. You
- 40:44Speaker 2: have to be able to react to different situations. That's
- 40:46Speaker 2: why it seems like some basketball players are so robotic,
- 40:50Speaker 2: because it's like, man, we just gonna go from catching
- 40:53Speaker 2: the ball from the corner, to the next action. It's
- 40:56Speaker 2: literally like they're not even thinking for themselves. And the
- 41:00Speaker 2: only way you break out of that is if you
- 41:02Speaker 2: are just start playing natural basketball. And you don't become
- 41:06Speaker 2: better at basketball unless there's a series of things that
- 41:09Speaker 2: happen that you can't expect and you understand, oh, I
- 41:12Speaker 2: can think for myself here and I can figure this out.
- 41:15Speaker 2: So much of hooping is just figuring it out. Like
- 41:17Speaker 2: whatever happened, Bo, I wasn't the best dude at my age.
- 41:22Speaker 2: But dudes always told me, hey, man, you going to
- 41:24Speaker 2: play with us. We the older dudes. You the smallest
- 41:27Speaker 2: dude out here. And you're the youngest dude out here.
- 41:30Speaker 2: The only way you're going to get better is by
- 41:33Speaker 2: hooping against us and getting your ass kicked. Going down
- 41:36Speaker 2: the lane and getting knocked on your ass. And being
- 41:38Speaker 2: able to take that and getting up and hooping. Whatever
- 41:40Speaker 2: happened to that?
- 41:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a time, man, but it's going to, I
- 41:44Speaker 1: just want to see how this all goes.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Are we the two old men at the theater? The
- 41:47Speaker 2: two Muppets?
- 41:48Speaker 1: No, we might be, but I mean, no, but I
- 41:50Speaker 1: don't even think we'd add. Cause what are we talking
- 41:52Speaker 1: about though is like, Hey man, Victor went by y'all.
- 41:55Speaker 1: I'm a calf. Oh, right. Like, like, like this is,
- 41:59Speaker 1: we're looking at these red flags come up with the
- 42:02Speaker 1: next generation of some of the most incredible basketball players
- 42:05Speaker 1: that we've ever seen. The one guy that I think
- 42:07Speaker 1: will play forever though. My man Jokic, he like, look, man,
- 42:11Speaker 1: y'all out here doing all this jumping. Not your boy.
- 42:14Speaker 1: And he is, by the way, currently putting up. I
- 42:18Speaker 1: don't even want to talk about it because it's so obscene.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Like they should take us off the air for talking
- 42:22Speaker 1: about what Jokic is. The man's leading the league in
- 42:24Speaker 1: rebounding and assists while putting up 29 points a game
- 42:26Speaker 1: at splits of 62 and 44 points. And 85. Like,
- 42:32Speaker 1: this is nuts. But I want to get this in
- 42:36Speaker 1: right fast before we go. Yeah, I know. It feels
- 42:38Speaker 1: like a tease just to throw that out there. But
- 42:40Speaker 1: before we, I want to ask you about this before
- 42:42Speaker 1: we go. Are the Thunder about to win 75 games?
- 42:46Speaker 2: If they want to. You know what I'm like? You
- 42:49Speaker 2: know what it is? It doesn't look impressive. And when
- 42:53Speaker 2: I say that, like, the 2016 Warriors looked spectacular because
- 42:58Speaker 2: they just played the three-point game and it was Steph
- 43:01Speaker 2: at like the absolute sort of peak of his powers
- 43:03Speaker 2: and they literally ran away from you like during second
- 43:07Speaker 2: quarters Oklahoma City like last night it was a close
- 43:10Speaker 2: game against the Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler lists Golden
- 43:13Speaker 2: State Warriors and Golden State led by three like in
- 43:16Speaker 2: the fourth quarter and then like I wound up falling
- 43:18Speaker 2: asleep because I'm old and I wake up like two
- 43:21Speaker 2: hours later and it was you know a double-digit league Bo,
- 43:25Speaker 2: they don't overwhelm you the way that the 96 Bulls
- 43:29Speaker 2: did with the Dobermans and the way that the 16
- 43:32Speaker 2: Warriors did with just like the sheer volume. They do
- 43:36Speaker 2: just enough. It's like they beat you by four every quarter.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Beat you by four, beat you by four, beat you
- 43:41Speaker 2: by four, beat you by four. And then you wind up, wait,
- 43:44Speaker 2: we lost by 20?
- 43:45Speaker 1: Yeah, because they're winning by 15 points a night.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Isn't that crazy?
- 43:50Speaker 1: They're winning by 15 points a night, and they did
- 43:53Speaker 1: most of this without their second or third best player.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Where do you sit on J-Dub?
- 44:00Speaker 1: I mean, to be your second or third best player,
- 44:04Speaker 1: and the fact that you have another player that is
- 44:06Speaker 1: as good or close to being as good with Chet. Because,
- 44:10Speaker 1: I mean, look, Chet's putting up second best player type numbers,
- 44:13Speaker 1: you know? Whew, like I did not love J-Dub during
- 44:18Speaker 1: the playoffs. And then we found out that he was
- 44:20Speaker 1: actually very hurt, right? Like, oh, my bad. Dude, and
- 44:25Speaker 1: they gonna get the, it's gonna be, they like the
- 44:27Speaker 1: Lakers of 82. They can win a championship and they
- 44:29Speaker 1: go draft James Worthy. Cause look, they could wind up
- 44:32Speaker 1: with a super high pick in this draft. And this
- 44:34Speaker 1: is a draft that people are saying is has a
- 44:36Speaker 1: bunch of guys that could be that guy. Now granted,
- 44:39Speaker 1: the last time somebody told me that was 2014 and
- 44:43Speaker 1: that didn't really work out that way. right, Wiggins, Jabari Parker,
- 44:46Speaker 1: and Bede. It didn't exactly work out that way. But
- 44:50Speaker 1: the Thunder be cheating, man. They cheat on offense and
- 44:54Speaker 1: they cheat on defense, right? I don't understand how it
- 44:57Speaker 1: is that they out here on defense not getting called
- 45:00Speaker 1: for none of that stuff that look like fouls and
- 45:02Speaker 1: on offense, stuff that ain't fouls get called fouls when
- 45:05Speaker 1: they got the ball. I don't understand how they managed
- 45:07Speaker 1: to do both.
- 45:08Speaker 2: It is amazing the way that the magic of Shea
- 45:13Speaker 2: Gildress-Alexander's game is legit i'm going to fear you into
- 45:19Speaker 2: following me i'm going to fear you into leaving me
- 45:23Speaker 2: open either way i'm going to get a good look
- 45:27Speaker 2: or a great look or i'm going to get filed
- 45:30Speaker 2: like it's just he has legit mastered the game in
- 45:33Speaker 2: terms of space like in terms of this is a
- 45:36Speaker 2: box that i'm going to operate in and within these
- 45:40Speaker 2: 18 inches of wherever i'm at when i'm dribbling the
- 45:42Speaker 2: ball and where your hand is or where your shoulder
- 45:45Speaker 2: is or where my shoulder is, I'm going to master that.
- 45:48Speaker 2: It is not necessarily like aesthetically pleasing, but man, is
- 45:52Speaker 2: it effective? And here's the other thing, Bo. The crazy
- 45:57Speaker 2: thing was you said 82 and worthy in the Lakers.
- 46:00Speaker 2: You know what year I thought of? 86 in the Celtics.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Um, Knock on some wood, partner. We can't
- 46:09Speaker 1: put that on. Yeah, we can't.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Look, if the Thunder were a big city team who
- 46:16Speaker 2: had won the championship off to a 21-1 start and
- 46:22Speaker 2: could have up to three lottery picks the next year,
- 46:24Speaker 2: if they were the Lakers, do you know how many
- 46:27Speaker 2: Comic Sans letters would be written to Adam Silver saying, hey, dawg,
- 46:33Speaker 2: This ain't it. But because it's the Thunder, we got
- 46:35Speaker 2: to say, oh, man, this is great. We're going to
- 46:37Speaker 2: be in Oklahoma City in June for the next five years, baby.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Yo, I don't even know what Presti's supposed to do, right? Like,
- 46:44Speaker 1: they are set up in such a way that what
- 46:47Speaker 1: it should be now is, all right, we got all
- 46:49Speaker 1: these young guys. We got all these assets. Now we
- 46:51Speaker 1: can package that and finally get us the guy that'll
- 46:54Speaker 1: put us over the top. Now we can go get
- 46:56Speaker 1: a superstar. Nah, you got one. You got the second
- 47:00Speaker 1: best player in the NBA. And then you got Jalen Williams.
- 47:04Speaker 1: And by the way, the only guy that got that's
- 47:07Speaker 1: a super high draft pick is Chet. I keep like
- 47:11Speaker 1: the whole thing about the tank argument. You can tank
- 47:14Speaker 1: all you want, but the real key is knowing what
- 47:17Speaker 1: you're doing because this team is not built with high picks.
- 47:20Speaker 1: That Warriors run. I mean, they win a guy, Kevin Durant.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Yes.
- 47:23Speaker 1: But before that, the only super high pick was Andrew Bogut.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Like that's not how they put this thing together.
- 47:30Speaker 2: You got to know your draft picks. Like in today's,
- 47:32Speaker 2: and I make this point so much, in today's second
- 47:35Speaker 2: apron world where rookie scale big boy maxes, there's such
- 47:39Speaker 2: a schism between the two. If you can get the
- 47:42Speaker 2: draft right and you can pay your players under the
- 47:45Speaker 2: rookie paradigm of the maxes before they graduate to the
- 47:49Speaker 2: big boy maxes after year seven or eight, that's the
- 47:52Speaker 2: only way that you can have something truly sustainable in
- 47:56Speaker 2: the draft era where you get your draft picks right.
- 47:59Speaker 2: You develop them or they turn to max players, but
- 48:01Speaker 2: they're little max players. And you hope that the money
- 48:04Speaker 2: in the league doesn't burst, that the money keeps growing
- 48:09Speaker 2: to where you can continue to pay your guys, that
- 48:12Speaker 2: it doesn't catch you. But it's only like two or
- 48:15Speaker 2: three teams. Like if you think about this, name me
- 48:20Speaker 2: the three best teams in basketball right now. If you
- 48:23Speaker 2: name me the three best teams in basketball, I'll tell
- 48:25Speaker 2: you what they got in common. I'm just curious if
- 48:26Speaker 2: you rock with me on this one.
- 48:28Speaker 1: All right. I would be inclined to say at this moment.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Just at this moment.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Just rock me at the moment. Detroit, Oklahoma City. You know,
- 48:39Speaker 1: I have a soft spot in my heart for the
- 48:41Speaker 1: Denver Nuggets, but probably Houston coming in there, huh? Right.
- 48:45Speaker 2: And Denver could be the second best team in the West.
- 48:49Speaker 2: And I know I said the Lakers, but like recalibrate that.
- 48:53Speaker 2: But Detroit, Thunder, the Rockets. they have in common is
- 48:59Speaker 2: they got their draft picks right in there, winning with
- 49:01Speaker 2: the draft picks. With Detroit, it's Cunningham, it's Duren, it's Stewart,
- 49:06Speaker 2: it's Thompson, it's Holland. It's all those guys in Houston,
- 49:11Speaker 2: and then you traded a couple of them for Kevin Durant.
- 49:15Speaker 2: But you still got Thompson and Shingun, Hold on.
- 49:19Speaker 1: And the couple that you traded were the ones that
- 49:21Speaker 1: you didn't get as right. Right, right.
- 49:23Speaker 2: Which you didn't have to. But other teams are being
- 49:26Speaker 2: put in positions where they have to take a flyer
- 49:29Speaker 2: because they didn't have the draft capital. And now this
- 49:32Speaker 2: is what happens. If you get the draft right, you
- 49:35Speaker 2: have the trust of whatever you've built And you can
- 49:38Speaker 2: take advantage of the teams that didn't. Like if you're
- 49:41Speaker 2: the Clippers and you don't have a first, you may
- 49:43Speaker 2: have to trade James Harden or see if James Harden
- 49:48Speaker 2: wants to go just to see if you can get
- 49:51Speaker 2: into the draft. Because if you can't get into the
- 49:53Speaker 2: draft and your cap is tied up, you legit have
- 49:56Speaker 2: no hope. Yeah.
- 49:57Speaker 1: And they gave Sam Presti. They had to. I didn't
- 50:00Speaker 1: think it was a bad decision when they made it.
- 50:02Speaker 1: But it is now looking like.
- 50:05Speaker 2: The worst trade in NBA history.
- 50:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the Herschel Walker trade.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Yep.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Like that's the exact comp for the Paul George trade,
- 50:13Speaker 1: which again, made sense. They had some bad breaks, some
- 50:17Speaker 1: things that didn't go right. If Kawhi Leonard does not
- 50:19Speaker 1: get hurt in 2021, I think they have a strong
- 50:21Speaker 1: argument that they could have pushed through because Paul George
- 50:23Speaker 1: was really good in that postseason, as I recall.
- 50:25Speaker 2: Yes, he was.
- 50:26Speaker 1: Yes, he was. But it didn't work. And for the Thunder,
- 50:30Speaker 1: they had two down years. That was really it. Two
- 50:35Speaker 1: down years. And now they look like they're going to
- 50:37Speaker 1: be annoying and unbeatable maybe forever.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Well, I won't push back against that. But I will
- 50:46Speaker 2: say this. Last year, I thought Boston was walking to June.
- 50:53Speaker 2: And a funny thing happened on the way to June
- 50:55Speaker 2: was in the second round against the Knicks, a team
- 50:58Speaker 2: they had dominated throughout the season, they got popped. I
- 51:02Speaker 2: thought the Denver Nuggets, after winning that title in 23—
- 51:06Speaker 2: I thought they were walking to June. And a funny
- 51:09Speaker 2: thing happened on the way to June. Minnesota with Rudy
- 51:12Speaker 2: and Towns and Ant popped them. I'm not saying the
- 51:16Speaker 2: same thing is going to happen. I am saying that
- 51:19Speaker 2: in today's NBA, it is far more. This thing don't
- 51:25Speaker 2: last as long as you think it does. Kevin Durant
- 51:27Speaker 2: go to stay worse. They lasted for three years.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 51:30Speaker 2: They've broken the game. Right.
- 51:31Speaker 1: But here's what I would say about that. Denver was
- 51:34Speaker 1: not out there with the same team, and they sacrificed
- 51:36Speaker 1: a lot of their depth going from that one year
- 51:39Speaker 1: to the next. Boston, we have to remember, them boys
- 51:43Speaker 1: have miles on them. The core of that team had
- 51:47Speaker 1: been together for, what, seven years? At that point, give
- 51:51Speaker 1: or take, we're coming in that zone. Brother, this is
- 51:54Speaker 1: just the beginning with these guys. They had the one
- 51:58Speaker 1: year where they lost to Dallas in the second round.
- 52:01Speaker 1: And then they came back and won the championship. Their
- 52:03Speaker 1: best player is 27 years old.
- 52:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:07Speaker 1: That's because I agree with you. Anything can happen except
- 52:11Speaker 1: those other teams were not in positions to reload. And
- 52:14Speaker 1: like Boston, for example, depending on Christophe Porzingis, which is
- 52:18Speaker 1: always going to be a ugh, right?
- 52:20Speaker 2: Like, we'll see what happens. Could that be Oklahoma City
- 52:23Speaker 2: depending on the help of Chad Holmgren?
- 52:25Speaker 1: I mean, it could be, but.
- 52:27Speaker 2: I'm not saying that you're wrong, and I'm not saying that.
- 52:29Speaker 1: Right, right, but this is what I'm saying.
- 52:31Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 52:32Speaker 1: If it does turn out that Chet's held it's a problem,
- 52:34Speaker 1: they can just go get something else!
- 52:37Speaker 2: The game just rewinds.
- 52:39Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Like, that's the difference here is
- 52:41Speaker 1: if one of these things doesn't work out... Hey, man,
- 52:44Speaker 1: go into Ashtray, get some change, run to the store
- 52:46Speaker 1: right fast, and go get me another big man. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 52:50Speaker 1: we got it. It's just in there. It's in there.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Don't you worry. Like, you go to the Thunder, you
- 52:54Speaker 1: go to the Thunder Ashtray with the change in it,
- 52:57Speaker 1: and it's got a $ 100 bill in it.
- 53:01Speaker 2: It's like the Coach Prime line. I'm bringing my luggage
- 53:04Speaker 2: with me, and my luggage is Louie.
- 53:06Speaker 1: Yeah. They're like, yo, why is your Crown Royal bag
- 53:09Speaker 1: so light? I thought you had change. Oh, man, this
- 53:11Speaker 1: is just paper money. It don't even jingle. Yeah, that's
- 53:13Speaker 1: what we got, baby.
- 53:15Speaker 2: It fold, baby. It just fold.
- 53:16Speaker 1: That's what we got. That's what we got. Man, it's
- 53:18Speaker 1: going to be a year. Vinny Goodwill, check him out.
- 53:22Speaker 1: ESPN covering the NBA. Next time we get you there,
- 53:25Speaker 1: we got to talk about the Knicks. We need to
- 53:26Speaker 1: have a chance. You get to watch this up close now. Like,
- 53:28Speaker 1: you are knee-deep in New York basketball.
- 53:31Speaker 2: I get the Carl Towns experience. The bongos and the threes.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Hey, man, the bongos and threes. And by the way,
- 53:37Speaker 1: he is bottom 10 field goal percentage at the rim.
- 53:42Speaker 1: And you know who else is? And this is going
- 53:43Speaker 1: to be an interesting discussion as this year goes on.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Cade Cunningham.
- 53:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I see that.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Under 60% field goal percentage at the rim, which I
- 53:53Speaker 1: think is a bit of a flag. And who's lower
- 53:55Speaker 1: than both of them, if I'm not mistaken? And this
- 53:57Speaker 1: is just sad. Zion Williamson.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty... Look, I'm surprised I don't even qualify.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Man, it just didn't have to be that way. Shouldn't
- 54:08Speaker 1: have gone to Duke.
- 54:11Speaker 2: And look, once the tire blew on them shoes, it
- 54:14Speaker 2: ain't never been the same since.
- 54:15Speaker 1: That happened. That happened. Shouldn't have gone to Duke.
- 54:20Speaker 2: Shouldn't have gone to Duke.
- 54:20Speaker 1: That's all I'm saying. Okay, a boozer's not too late.
- 54:22Speaker 1: You can leave and go somewhere else. Let's think about it.
- 54:26Speaker 2: For a second. Hop in the portal right now, go
- 54:28Speaker 2: to Carolina.
- 54:29Speaker 1: Hey, I... They'll take you. That's what I'm saying. I'm
- 54:34Speaker 1: sure they'll take you. My brother, I appreciate you.
- 54:36Speaker 2: All love, brother.
