- 0:33Hamster with a blump pen knife for.
- 0:35Doing quicker. Welcome back to a hamster with a
- 0:39blump pen knife. The Doctor Who commentary
- 0:42Podcast. I'm two.
- 0:44I'm hit. Oh, no.
- 0:45God, I'm already drunk. I'm here with two of the finest
- 0:49and wrongest men in all of Doctor Who.
- 0:52Pat fandom. Mr. Dylan Reece.
- 0:54Hello. Hello, it's wonderful to be here
- 0:57like we podcast all the time, Joe, but it's weird to be back
- 1:00on hamster with a blunt pen knife.
- 1:02The commentary podcast. It's been a while.
- 1:04Yeah, I don't do many of those anymore.
- 1:06Now it's all winding down a little bit.
- 1:08And also, of course, the most handsomest man in all of podcast
- 1:13land, but also the wrongest, Mr. Luke Malloy.
- 1:17Hello. Yes, go to back the lads, we're
- 1:19back. The boys are back in town.
- 1:22I mean, I figured we was going to go somewhere uphill after the
- 1:25keys of Mariners. So this.
- 1:26Could be our biggest one, yeah. In terms of reputation of the
- 1:30story, but I somehow think we've gone downhill.
- 1:33And this is the second in the in the Joe Luke, Dylan Keys trilogy
- 1:38of commentary. What's the third one there?
- 1:42Peter of Trump. 7 keys to do. So there is an audio of that,
- 1:48you know, and we have listened to some pretty shit audience,
- 1:50but. Dylan's done it.
- 1:51I've done it. I'm not doing it again.
- 1:53Can I ask you gentlemen, please what you think about enormous,
- 1:56flailing, flapping tentacles? Let's start with Dylan.
- 2:00Crawl. That is a very succinct answer.
- 2:07Thank you very much. That's happy.
- 2:08To say for two hours. Heart, heart, heart, heart.
- 2:12No, that's Mary Tam tied up right.
- 2:15Damn. It's hard not to look.
- 2:17It's hard not to look. I said Dylan a message in the
- 2:20week I sent him a message saying, you know what?
- 2:24I've been sort of tempted with Clara and a few others, but in
- 2:27Mary, Tam may finally be the person to tone me.
- 2:31She's she is the the epitome of beauty, right?
- 2:35Do you know what he messaged me back though?
- 2:36He messaged back and went, whoa, she's dead.
- 2:39She ain't gonna do that. I was like oh thanks mate.
- 2:42Those American fundamentalist Christian conversion groups,
- 2:46I've got it all wrong. They should have just shown them
- 2:47power of crawl and Mary Tan would have turned turned any
- 2:50man. Power Crawl, I think maybe
- 2:52Armageddon Factor, that costume she's got in that or Rebus
- 2:56operation, that's pretty gorgeous as well, yeah.
- 2:58Look, I mean she could wear a bin.
- 3:00Any of them. Well, we have rather got to jump
- 3:05into episode 1 fairly quickly, but I'm going to ask you both
- 3:08your opinion of the key key to time season because we did trial
- 3:13of a Tyler before and you were both very favourable about link
- 3:17seasons back in Classic. So what do you think about this
- 3:20one? I, I got, I, I love it.
- 3:25I think, I think because I was collecting the DVDs as a kid and
- 3:29I think that that's how I experienced the classic story
- 3:35for the first time. And so like, it was all about
- 3:37trying to fit the gaps together. And then suddenly out of
- 3:40nowhere, I probably said something similar about trial
- 3:42out of nowhere. You had a whole season drop at
- 3:44once on DVD. And so to go from start to end
- 3:49was a real like great journey. And I think I do slightly prefer
- 3:53things when they're when they're a bit more linked and storyline.
- 3:56If you're a reason to come back. Yeah, and like it's not just
- 4:01it's not just what doctors do is 90% of the time is it would just
- 4:03turn it up, random story, self-contained, move on, which
- 4:08is must be why we love it some days.
- 4:10But also it's quite nice when you get a little a little
- 4:14anomaly like this. That wonderful box set, you know
- 4:17that opens up like the key to time.
- 4:20Oh no, I didn't. Have that purpose.
- 4:21I was only, I was only a kid joke.
- 4:24That was limited edition and then they re released it just in
- 4:26the standard slip case. We had the cheap one.
- 4:29Bless. Yeah.
- 4:29And. I had the cheap one.
- 4:30The cheap one felt like one of the prized possessions when I
- 4:34was a kid though. But it's also when it came out
- 4:37on VHS, they released it month by month, so it was almost like
- 4:41you were following a continuing series again.
- 4:43So whereas everything else sort of came out randomly in whatever
- 4:47order they decided. So that's how I experienced the
- 4:51season and I do like things. I prefer things with an arc and
- 4:55not because of the arc, but this is my favorite Tom Baker season.
- 4:58I think it straddles the line between the silliness that's
- 5:02going to happen next season where it's not quite as silly,
- 5:05although there are some silly moments.
- 5:07We'll get to it from that and the sort of more serious stuff
- 5:11that has come before. I just think the balance between
- 5:14silly, sci-fi, scary, all those things is right throughout the
- 5:18season. Admittedly, Armageddon Factor is
- 5:21not one that I visit often, but the rest I I think Rebus is
- 5:26probably my favorite Tom Baker story.
- 5:29Gorgeous, isn't it? They are not ice crystals for
- 5:33me. I've said this on previous
- 5:35hamsters. This is on the right day.
- 5:37My favorite season of Classic Who.
- 5:40I just. I don't think there's a dud this
- 5:42year and I think even the weaker stories, and this is probably
- 5:46one of the weakest stories, it still has a huge amount to
- 5:49recommend it. We'll we'll get there.
- 5:51But the first four, I think that is a continuous run of four
- 5:54absolute bangers, Rebos, Pirate Planet, Stones of Blood and
- 5:58Andrew Zatara. And it's so fun this season and
- 6:02the jokes are genuinely funny. And you're right, I think you've
- 6:05got the awkwardness of 15 out the way.
- 6:08We haven't quite gone into the pantomime of 17, although I love
- 6:11that as well. And I feel like he's marshaled
- 6:14his money the best this season as well.
- 6:17Yes. They're much better.
- 6:18Beautiful productions this year, yeah.
- 6:21I think although crawl isn't the best example of the season, I
- 6:24think the season as a whole is as tonally perfect as Doctor Who
- 6:28can get can be and I think Tom Baker is Tom Baker.
- 6:33I really like season 12. It's between 12 and this for me.
- 6:36They're my 2 favorites on Baker seasons.
- 6:40Yeah, Tom Baker's got the best balance here of like serious and
- 6:45comedy without, as you say, going so into season 17, over
- 6:49the top. I call it inspired lunacy.
- 6:51Tom Baker this year, all those things with Amelia Rumford, you
- 6:55know, in the in the cottage. It's just gorgeous.
- 6:58I think it's interesting what you say about marshalling the
- 7:01money because if you think, look at this season, even though it's
- 7:05not period drama, a lot of the sets are very much period drama,
- 7:09which we all know the BBC do well, blah blah, blah, blah,
- 7:12blah. But.
- 7:13You've listened to these, have you?
- 7:16And it's when they get to the hard sci-fi stuff at the end of
- 7:19the season that it starts to look cheap, A, because the
- 7:22money's run out, but B, because it's space stations and there's
- 7:24a bit of it here. But I think that the with the
- 7:27refinery, they sort of get away with it.
- 7:29But I guess we'll we'll get into that a bit more than.
- 7:31So I think it's playing to the series strengths, even if they
- 7:35are sci-fi story set on other planets.
- 7:38I'll just say one last thing before I press play and that is
- 7:41I think Tom Baker, he's on his absolute, he's at his best
- 7:45because he's been appalling to Louise Jameson for a year and a
- 7:49half. And then in steps Mary Tam, she
- 7:51ain't having none of that shit. And so suddenly, suddenly the
- 7:55doctors on the back foot and the companion is the really
- 7:58competent one. I mean, don't you love that bit?
- 7:59And Andrew Zatara where she goes, well I'll just go off and
- 8:02do it myself then and find it in 5 minutes.
- 8:05It sort of lets him off the leash a bit to go to go a bit
- 8:08more a bit more crazy. Yeah, he's met his match.
- 8:12Fellas, do you fancy heading down the bog with me?
- 8:15Let's go. Absolutely.
- 8:17Let's be careful with no one's wearing Wellington boots, we
- 8:20might get sucked off. And any fart gags, all right?
- 8:25And I'm off What? So what?
- 8:27Count us in, then come. On go.
- 8:35He really does want to go to bed tonight.
- 8:40Well, even though the link is tenuous this season, I weirdly
- 8:44don't like watching just singular stories from it.
- 8:47I like doing it as well. I'm so sorry.
- 8:49That's exactly what we're doing tonight.
- 8:51We're going to. Carry on through to Armageddon
- 8:54Factor. What do you think is the best
- 8:56segment of the year? Like the most inspired segment
- 8:59of the year. Tara for me.
- 9:01I think it's probably Stones of Blood, but Tara a close second.
- 9:06The planet and the pirate planet.
- 9:07Often that's. Pirate Planet is great as.
- 9:09Well, and, and of course, the Princess and what?
- 9:11Okay, all of them. Let's just say all of them.
- 9:13Well, I'm not huge on ribos rebos.
- 9:16Which one is it? Is it ribos or rebos?
- 9:19Rebos. It's a made-up word.
- 9:23You want prick? Oh yeah?
- 9:27So what you mean about this, actually?
- 9:28Oh, now we're just going to sit here and slag it off?
- 9:30I think you get away with this set because, yeah, because of
- 9:33the outside bits. Yeah, it's, it's an industrial,
- 9:36you know, oil rig essentially. It could do with being a bit
- 9:39dirtier, but I think it you just about get away with it in the
- 9:42way that in parts of the sun makers you really don't.
- 9:46Can I get this question out of the way early please because I
- 9:49can't. Remember that is canine.
- 9:52Well, no, I know that. Great.
- 9:54I'm a very old man. I've read a lot of books.
- 9:58I think it was your ideal loop to do power crawl.
- 10:02If I go back to the end, I think it was, it wasn't mine.
- 10:06It wasn't mine. It could have been, man.
- 10:08I wanted to know of all this season, why did you choose this
- 10:11one? Probably because I haven't seen
- 10:13it for a while. I think, as you say, because the
- 10:15first four are strong and because Armageddon's a six part,
- 10:18I think this one just always sort of falls away.
- 10:22I've probably not seen it for that's eight years or something
- 10:25have. You not done the prep work for
- 10:27this? Have you not watched?
- 10:28Oh yeah, no, I saw it. I saw it 2 days ago.
- 10:30Oh. That's all right then.
- 10:32Good grief. This story plays a small but
- 10:36significant role in my very early fandom because when I
- 10:41went. Which panopticon was this?
- 10:43It wasn't a panopticon. It was before that, you smug
- 10:45little twat. Doctor Who 1989 blah blah blah.
- 10:53Watched on the telly, went away, went to the library a few months
- 10:56later and discovered Doctor Who books and they had quite a few
- 11:00of those hardback Target library novels and for some reason they
- 11:05had loads of the Graham Williams era and this was one of the
- 11:08first ones I remember my mum. It wasn't the first, but one of
- 11:11the first. My mum got out and read to me at
- 11:13bedtime. Oh, shut up.
- 11:17She also read me the horns. For a second, you that's really
- 11:21cute. She read me the Horns of Nyman,
- 11:25Stones of Blood, and Androids Atara as well.
- 11:28So there's something about those ones that just sort of, I just,
- 11:31I can remember the covers. I can almost smell them.
- 11:34God. Were you not begging to know
- 11:35what happened in the Armageddon Factor?
- 11:38No, I didn't do get the Armageddon factor.
- 11:40Yeah, so you're not like, what the hell happens to this case?
- 11:42I wrote an essay for a book called You on Target about why I
- 11:46never read The Armageddon Factor as a kid because it was shit.
- 11:51Like I hadn't seen it, but the cover was so uninspiring I
- 11:54didn't want to. You need to send us that.
- 11:55What's the? Cover of this one then.
- 11:57It's that it's Tom Baker at the end, isn't it?
- 11:59After he's fought the squid. Yeah, but there's there's crawl
- 12:02behind him. Oh, can we talk about this marsh
- 12:05for a second, please? Fabulous location this is.
- 12:07Yeah, it's called the Molting Snape Suffolk, and it was shot
- 12:12on the eighth. Well, all the dates got off the
- 12:14screen. Fuck.
- 12:16Too hot for TV research? King strikes again.
- 12:19He's got the. I can marches.
- 12:23No, not not. I make that up.
- 12:26It it just makes a change from your normal quarry doesn't.
- 12:29It. Yeah, exactly.
- 12:30And there are so many versions like you remember in time in the
- 12:34Rani, Time in the Rani is written as a jungle and they go,
- 12:37we can't do a jungle. So we go to a quarry.
- 12:40They don't even bother to Dick around with, I don't know, a
- 12:43forest or a swampland like this. And I think it just makes all
- 12:47the difference. Like it just, it makes it feel
- 12:50completely different to the rest of the season.
- 12:52The way Mary Tom's stroking that tracer there.
- 12:58Slightly to do with that. No, no.
- 13:01You are right, though. I think because, you know, it
- 13:03would have been a really horrible shoot to be out there
- 13:07and be doing this, that this sort of feels like there's some
- 13:09sacrifice on behalf of the actors.
- 13:12Have you not seen the behind the scenes footage on the DVD?
- 13:15They actually get stuck in the mud at one point.
- 13:17Yeah, there's a schools program called Variations that visits
- 13:22the set of them on the marsh, and it's only 6 minutes, but you
- 13:26you get to see a swampy smoking Tom Baker.
- 13:29Yeah, Tom Baker and Mary Tam get interviewed and you can tell
- 13:33that she finds him hilarious but isn't taking any of his shit.
- 13:38But he's here, right? Hovercraft's going across the
- 13:40wall, so obviously the swampy's all have boats.
- 13:43It just feels like there's a bit of money, doesn't it?
- 13:45Yeah. And this late in the year, let's
- 13:47remember that this sport last year was Underworld, directed by
- 13:51the same man, I believe. We love a hovercraft and doc too
- 13:55though. Like it the only place you ever
- 13:57see them? It suddenly feels futuristic,
- 13:59like near futuristic. How often is a hovercraft you
- 14:03get? It you get one an enemy of the
- 14:04world, you get one in Planet of the Spiders.
- 14:07Yeah, and the planet spiders one's the best because it goes
- 14:09over a hobo. If Doctor Who had been around in
- 14:13the 90s, it would have been monorails everywhere, wouldn't
- 14:15that? Yeah.
- 14:17Oh, it would have been a lot of bugs, just that the DLR,
- 14:20wouldn't it? That's all you'd ever.
- 14:21See is that what was on bugs? Was it?
- 14:23Yeah, they just film around Canary Wharf all the time.
- 14:26You could only film in Canary Wharf on a Sunday now the early
- 14:29time. That's good thing.
- 14:32It does feel like more of an alien planet than quite a lot of
- 14:34them quarries though, doesn't it?
- 14:35Because there it is just like a horrible place.
- 14:40What do we think about the Doctor playing a tune on a
- 14:43follow that read just. One and it's like.
- 14:48The real skill. Can't you do it then?
- 14:53No, I'm not. I'm no good at blowing on a thin
- 14:55reef. You are adept at playing
- 14:57instruments. You are.
- 15:01And there's little things like, you know, when the swampy says,
- 15:03sort of going through the little like waterways and there's mud
- 15:07banks and there's different levels to it.
- 15:09And it's just it just makes for a more excite like them hiding
- 15:12in the reeds here. It just.
- 15:15I really hate you. Remember the mutants when you
- 15:17add the primitives on the planet and it was all like the studio
- 15:20bound hearts, and it just looks dismal and like every other
- 15:24shitty Tomorrow people's science fiction show.
- 15:27But because they're out here on location, all right, they're
- 15:29painted green. Bless them in the boats.
- 15:31I mean, it just feels like a real society to me.
- 15:34Yeah. Yeah, if this was done on a set,
- 15:37the whole story would be shite. Yeah, it's just something really
- 15:42engaging about the fact that they're running through real
- 15:44horrible bogs and quagmires. The directors always work better
- 15:48on film. They've they've used a hell of a
- 15:50lot of film to to get this done. So you can tell they're really
- 15:53trying thinking about the shots. They can move quicker on film
- 15:56because it's 1 camera. They haven't got to plan the
- 15:57shots in the same way. Everyone's buzzing because
- 15:59they've been out all night in the hotel bar and you know
- 16:03they're all on a little holiday. That bit where he played the
- 16:05read wasn't in the script. Tom Baker was just pissed off.
- 16:09Fancy doing that? You can't quite smell the booze
- 16:12on Tom in this season. I feel like the next season you,
- 16:15you kind of I feel like he's there's a clamminess to him.
- 16:18Whereas. I think this is his best costume
- 16:21though, the oatmeal jacket. He has fabulous badges on it.
- 16:25Yeah, there's ducks. The the scarf sits so much
- 16:28better around it than than it does on the little brown number
- 16:31he had in his first season. I hate his first season costume.
- 16:34I hate it. What is it?
- 16:36Is it the red one? It's the red one.
- 16:38Brownie red, Maroon. Yeah.
- 16:41I like it, but it does sort of evolve and it's hard then once
- 16:44at the end of Tom to be like, Oh yeah.
- 16:46What? Watch Mary Tammy.
- 16:48She's tied up and the the gun runner, what's his name?
- 16:52Ron Dutt starts threatening her in a minute.
- 16:54She's just so unimpressed by all of it.
- 16:57She has an air of indifference. Quite quiet, though I don't
- 17:01think this is a great story for Ramana.
- 17:02Really. She she's sort of reduced to
- 17:06disagreement. Don't you even love the bit
- 17:08though when she's tied up on that rack?
- 17:10And I do love that bit. Stranglers are pulling her arms
- 17:13and legs. It's great.
- 17:14Is that what happens? I wonder if this was the story
- 17:21that like, sealed it for her that she was going to finish.
- 17:23Because I really didn't think that could be the case because.
- 17:25No, I think it's Stones of Blood, that bit where she's
- 17:29going hell hanging off the clear.
- 17:33Or maybe the end of part one of these?
- 17:35Hanging. The this scene originally ROM
- 17:38Dutt was going to interrogate them all with a file of fluid.
- 17:41That and it would the scene would end with her him flicking
- 17:44fluid in her face, making that what you will.
- 17:47ROM slut. Yeah, exactly.
- 17:49He's there. ROM Dutty.
- 17:53She does have the odd witty line.
- 17:55Daddy watching. This you behave.
- 17:57Good grief, I can't believe I'm saying this.
- 18:00I can't remember what I was going to say now.
- 18:04What was I saying? I.
- 18:06Don't. Know she has the odd good luck.
- 18:07That's it. He goes oh, I like a joke and
- 18:10she goes Oh yeah, think of 1. She's quite quick.
- 18:12I think she's pretty quick. I mean, it's a terrible joke now
- 18:14compared to what you just said. Thank you.
- 18:16And. Of course.
- 18:18I'd be pretty quick. I'm going to stop.
- 18:20Splashing on Mary's arm. The doctor's badges.
- 18:26Let's talk about those. The ducks.
- 18:29Are there any other ones that have the ducks in the City of
- 18:32Death? Are there any other ones?
- 18:36Oh, I don't think. Because this made me question
- 18:38whether I'd missed any. How did he go?
- 18:42We're off to a marsh. Put some ducks on my pills.
- 18:46The other the other stories you got you guys tread water.
- 18:50I'll see what he's wearing and the others.
- 18:52Thanks boss. Oh, look at that dreadful bit of
- 18:55model work. Why doesn't that work?
- 18:58I think, I think the model does. I think it's the interior sets
- 19:01that don't. I don't ever believe them.
- 19:02Interior sets are on that. You think that looks like a
- 19:05genuine oil rig? I mean, it doesn't look like a
- 19:07genuine like. A space like.
- 19:11But compare it to like, think of the oil rig and terror the
- 19:13Zygons when that's being attacked.
- 19:15That looks great. It's different.
- 19:20All of classic who looks a bit pony now.
- 19:23Is this the first appearance of Tom's coat?
- 19:27Because in Stones of Blood, he's wearing the long velvet brown
- 19:31one. What's he wearing in Pirate
- 19:33Planet? I'll find out.
- 19:38I feel like that could. Be a bit of on the spot research
- 19:40here. No, I don't.
- 19:41I think he said this costume at least.
- 19:44Once no, no planet is wearing the long.
- 19:47Black. What about Tara then?
- 19:49What's he got on in Tara? A thong.
- 19:52I think it's this one, isn't it? He's wearing this one in Tara.
- 19:54He's got to be this one. He's worn this one before, I'm
- 19:56sure. Right, Luke, given that you've
- 19:59already mentioned a handful of other Doctor Who stories, I
- 20:02mean, I know your pedigree as a Doctor Who fan is quite
- 20:04impressive. I'll need you to tell me now.
- 20:07Neil McCarthy playing Thorn, what other stories are you in?
- 20:10I'm. Crap at actors don't know.
- 20:15He's Barnum from the mind of evil.
- 20:17Doctor Summers. Doctor Summers?
- 20:20And what about Philip Maddock? OK, yeah, I've got.
- 20:23Shit loads of them. Yeah, we've got Brain and
- 20:25Morbius, haven't we? We've got the war games.
- 20:28Daleks invasion of Earth protons.
- 20:30I love. Protons.
- 20:32Tom Long, Brown velvet again, and Tara.
- 20:35You're joking. Yeah, right.
- 20:36We'll sort this in between episodes one and two.
- 20:38He's worn this coat before, I'm sure.
- 20:40Somehow when the three of us come together, Dylan, I'm always
- 20:43made aware of all those fashion blogs that you look at, you
- 20:46know, because you're your knowledge of fashion is very
- 20:50impressive. You know the way RTD age between
- 20:54RTD one and two? That's what Maddock looks like
- 20:56between Morbius and Crawl. Just like that.
- 21:00This. Age 30 years.
- 21:02Yeah, gradual 30 years change, you know.
- 21:07It always bothered me that Tom wasn't wearing a belt, but then
- 21:10I realized, of course he's wearing suspenders, because not
- 21:12suspenders. What do you call them?
- 21:14Braces, braces, braces. Yeah.
- 21:17It's just much like case of Andrew Zoni, you know, everybody
- 21:20says that. That's that's what Amy Pond's
- 21:22thinking about on a wedding day. Tom Baker's braces Raggedy Man.
- 21:28Jaggedy Man. Oh, I would have loved it.
- 21:31You know when she says you're late for my wedding If Tom Baker
- 21:34had appeared. Or William Hartnell.
- 21:37Imagine Tom doing that dance. Or Patrick Triton to shag her
- 21:41senseless. And he would.
- 21:44He would, he would. I forgot what I was going.
- 21:47To say the case of Androsani, sorry you are being an anarchist
- 21:53tonight. I think it's got a gun runner
- 21:57thing and they're on a sort of moon or something like that,
- 21:59aren't they? But it's not too similar.
- 22:01I mean, OK, there's a big monk. Superficially, yeah, I think, I
- 22:06think that Holmes goes there's more to this gun runner thing.
- 22:09I don't think I've quite nailed it like he does and Andrasani,
- 22:13but it works perfectly fine here.
- 22:16And of course, Ron Dutt shows up in everyone's favorite audio
- 22:20Necromantea, doesn't he? The actor.
- 22:24Is that man? 'S name Scott.
- 22:27Scott. That sounds so rude, Scott.
- 22:30Like the Scott lead. Oh, I was thinking of like a
- 22:34cross between a fart and scat. So what do you think of this
- 22:39one? Please then?
- 22:39Because I actually do like them. Like I believe them.
- 22:44Now, Luke, you're not going to be able to understand this too
- 22:46much, but Dylan might. I mean, they've got fabulous
- 22:48legs. I mean, they're green, but
- 22:51they've got lovely thighs. They're they're, they're healthy
- 22:54young men, aren't they? I believe that they live in a
- 22:56swamp, especially with how green they are.
- 22:59Also, Doctor Who's still pulling this shit?
- 23:02You know, like, yeah, every time we, we need loads of aliens,
- 23:05they're like, we'll paint somebody blue, we'll paint
- 23:07somebody red. They're still doing that now?
- 23:10Yeah, that's. What I mean, if we get that's
- 23:12what you're saying, if we get a swampy in the intergalactic Song
- 23:15Contest. Spoilers.
- 23:19No. If there's a CGI shot of the
- 23:21crowd and there's like a zombie and a Menopatra and a war
- 23:25machine and just every monster we've ever seen, I'll be so
- 23:28happy. I'm still looking at Tom Baker's
- 23:31coach, you know. John Leeson is shocking in this,
- 23:34isn't he? Like, of all the performances,
- 23:36his, his, what is? He says later on.
- 23:39It looks like it's going to be quite a daddy.
- 23:42I've got to be honest, all of the ones in the base just sort
- 23:44of merge into mush. Yeah, they're all like.
- 23:48And nothing happens that they're talking, but they're not talk.
- 23:52There's no nothing happening, they're just watching them,
- 23:55little lines that look like a squid on the screen.
- 23:57Fucking work to do in episode 3 then when nothing's going on.
- 24:01All right, we'll play a game or something.
- 24:04What? What coat did Tom Baker wear on
- 24:06this day? Do you know?
- 24:09It's weird, isn't it? Because Philip Maddock is
- 24:11generally seen as one of the best guest stars, but even in
- 24:14this I think he struggles a little.
- 24:16Not struggles, but it's not a memorable performance in a way
- 24:19that the others are. Well, the long held story isn't
- 24:21it is that he thought he was playing Thorn and then he came
- 24:25in and realized Neil McCarthy was and he was playing the sort
- 24:28of side character that has less interesting things to do and so
- 24:31he phones it in a bit. I don't think he's terrible.
- 24:34The material just ain't great. Yeah, no, I agree.
- 24:37I don't think it's a fantastic role for him.
- 24:41Whenever Tom's with them, I think it's very watchable
- 24:44because like, didn't he just put a cup of tea in his pocket?
- 24:48What was that all about? Oh my God.
- 24:50Bro I mean this is like Dylan and the SJW whiskey fans
- 24:57bringing back Chip North too. Chips, chips, chips, chips.
- 25:07Oh, look at it and you know what?
- 25:09You can just see all their asses as they're jumping about.
- 25:11It's just lovely. You've had a lot of flesh on
- 25:14display. Luke Malloy and Classic Who?
- 25:16It's quite nice for the taste. It's.
- 25:17Quite a flashy story, isn't it? Yeah, well, yeah, but not in any
- 25:20way you're going to enjoy it. I mean, bless them, they've all
- 25:24got hairy chests and all that horrible green paint all over
- 25:27it. They all this was filmed between
- 25:315:00 PM and 3:00 AM. This scene and again night
- 25:35shoots in Doctor Who. Expensive.
- 25:38Expensive. They're still expensive now, but
- 25:40like, you know, you get them and Williams does a couple, doesn't
- 25:44it? He does this, He does Pendle.
- 25:47Pendle, he does. Is the sum in Stones of Blood
- 25:52or? I think it's day for night.
- 25:54It's don't have blood. There's another one, though
- 25:57we're forgetting one. I mean, obviously not horror
- 26:00Fang Rock, a lot of it's set at night, but it's all in the
- 26:03studio. It's all in Birmingham.
- 26:05But it, I mean, just just in the marsh in the dark, it looks
- 26:10really great as it looks really filmic.
- 26:12Yeah, yeah. And I know they're only, like,
- 26:15weird little huts, but they've done a good job at convincing
- 26:17you that this is a cool little, you know, alien village.
- 26:21Yeah, making it all green. I know.
- 26:25I really, I really believe it can.
- 26:26I can I make a joke about your cock?
- 26:30What stopped you before? Well, that's cool.
- 26:33Yeah. And I've told these days I've
- 26:34got to ask permission. I was just going to say Luke
- 26:39rises from the depths, but then you've got to scream like
- 26:43reminder at the end. All right.
- 26:45He often does I'm. Sure he can.
- 26:48Yeah, he's a bit of a. Screamer.
- 26:51But guys, I've been through all the Tom's costumes.
- 26:53Power of the Crow The power of. Cross the.
- 26:56Power of the doctor Power of coal is the first time you see
- 27:00this this coat there is a. That's insane to us.
- 27:03There's a similar one in the season before, but it's lighter.
- 27:06It's that one you get in the Android invasion.
- 27:09What's he wearing the invisible enemy then?
- 27:11It's a it's a lighter version, the one you.
- 27:13Get it? Might just be that, yeah.
- 27:14I literally do not care how bland this set looks because
- 27:17later on when that tentacle comes bursting out and drags him
- 27:21off down the tube, it's so. Great.
- 27:23Reminds me of a first data once went on.
- 27:25Have you? Oh really?
- 27:26You care to tell us about that? We can't talk about crawl due to
- 27:31as I called him, due to the legal reasons.
- 27:34Have any of you heard the commentary for this one?
- 27:36It is so great. It's Tom Baker and John Leeson,
- 27:39right? And Tom's just being a raconteur
- 27:43and telling his stories like he always does.
- 27:45And every time Crow appears, he just stops and goes, Oh yes,
- 27:50he's. Like.
- 27:52That he's having the best time. The entire season has some of
- 27:56the best commentaries, like as him and Mary Tam, and then isn't
- 28:00the one that's really dull and it's just, yeah, it's not got
- 28:03Tom on it. No, it's the Armageddon factor
- 28:05and literally Mary Tam says in episode 3.
- 28:08Oh my God, this is so. Boring Mary Tam gone too soon.
- 28:16I know. It's sad.
- 28:17We know we like obviously she did that season of Tom Baker
- 28:20audios, but we could have could have done with more, especially
- 28:23as it wasn't the best season. But I see.
- 28:25Fella working for the refinery that's.
- 28:27He's a slave. Why though?
- 28:29Yeah, he just gave him a slave. I wish he had a bit more to do
- 28:32like it could it could have like a nude Sigma role but instead he
- 28:37sort of falls away. After but look, the look is is
- 28:39is is a is a cheat. He's reporting back.
- 28:43I don't think they gave him to him.
- 28:44I think they were like, we're taking him because they're a
- 28:46lesser life form. And they've got big guns.
- 28:49Yeah, exactly. Whereas they've only got sticks.
- 28:51Doctor with well, he's on. Does that ever happened again?
- 28:55I don't think so. He's not in a bulk again though,
- 28:57is he? Or not to a full circle anyway.
- 29:00No, but he doesn't wear well, he's.
- 29:02That really does look like he's been shot in a bathtub.
- 29:04I'm sorry, boys. First and last time.
- 29:07Yeah, there is. I get you.
- 29:08I don't think it's bad model work, but there is something
- 29:11about it. It's the.
- 29:12Scale of it I don't know. Or the angle something's not
- 29:15working. Right, next game.
- 29:16Doctor Who in a canoe. Name of the Times.
- 29:19Oh. OK, Hang.
- 29:21On The Invasion episode 1. Yes.
- 29:24Oh, can just regular boat row boats count?
- 29:27No, if you want. How long is the wenchuang?
- 29:29Well if you go in row boats then the Sea Devils.
- 29:33No, that's that's too obvious. Has he got to use a paddle?
- 29:39Yeah, Andrew Tatara's got one right because K9 stuck in it.
- 29:43It's. Got a little boat, yeah.
- 29:44K9 Master. It's the one.
- 29:48There's the one in Vampires of Venice.
- 29:51The Doctor and Roy get on one in the dark.
- 29:54More of a gondola, isn't it I? Don't know it's dark.
- 29:58It's just left my mind that entire episode.
- 30:00So, well, Roy gets out a little torture, Matt Smith gets out a
- 30:04big like luminescent thing, and then they make a Dick joke.
- 30:07There must be. There must be about 15 minutes
- 30:11of location work in episode 1. Yeah.
- 30:13It looks so good, doesn't it? It's.
- 30:14Crazy, isn't it? Do you think Michael Hayes was
- 30:17sort of preparing the Armageddon factory, right?
- 30:19How much location work can I have?
- 30:21Oh, sorry, we spent it all last week.
- 30:26Tom, look at, look at just Tom going through those reads for a
- 30:29second. Doesn't he have presents?
- 30:31Doesn't he look great? I mean, he's, he's just
- 30:34incredible, isn't he? It's so watchable.
- 30:36It's what you said before. And in this season particularly,
- 30:39like whenever he's on screen, you're just like, yes, yes.
- 30:43Come on, look. Scream.
- 30:44Grow, grow, grow, grow. Grow.
- 30:47Grow your merry time. Grow, grow, grow, grow.
- 30:52Grow. Also.
- 30:59I, I, I mean, I guess we'll talk about the monster in the next
- 31:02episode, but I, I lot the way when she goes through there.
- 31:05I, I love the way the doors shut and most like this sort of
- 31:09they've made this sacrificial thing out of grass.
- 31:11I think it looks really cool. I think it's, don't you think
- 31:13the payoff though, because obviously it looks like a shit
- 31:17monster costume. Sorry, I mean chocolate.
- 31:20And the payoff in episode 2 is it's a man in a shit monster.
- 31:23Costume. Yeah, it's it's.
- 31:24Such a it's. Very method.
- 31:27I mean cocky licking, don't you? Yeah, very cocky licking.
- 31:32Well, how do you think that does as a scene sets up?
- 31:35It's a great, it's great. Actually.
- 31:36The worst bit is the opening bit.
- 31:38I hate stories that start without the doctor.
- 31:41So you have that little like little 2-3 minutes on the actual
- 31:44oil rig? Then you get the trouble in the
- 31:4780 cent. There's a lot of stories that
- 31:49start not on the. Yeah, and if there's two scenes
- 31:52back-to-back without the Doctor, that is unforgivable.
- 31:54You see, I like my stories to start without the doctor.
- 31:57Oh, yeah? Well, here's what it.
- 32:02Is there we go. Let's skip on into Episode 2.
- 32:06Show. We'll cut it there.
- 32:11Cut it there, yeah.
