- 0:12Speaker 2: Spounce back time before it's break time. Mike Benton with
- 0:15Speaker 2: you for Cracking this morning on a Wednesday, February fourth,
- 0:18Speaker 2: where the crack And face their final game before the
- 0:20Speaker 2: Olympic break taken on the Los Angeles Kings from Crypto
- 0:23Speaker 2: dot Com Arena, and we have all the action for
- 0:25Speaker 2: you a little after seven o'clock, myself Alconiski on the
- 0:28Speaker 2: call with you and hers Searst back at Network Central
- 0:31Speaker 2: opening up at six point thirty all across the global
- 0:34Speaker 2: Credit Union Crack and Audio Network in your pregame show
- 0:36Speaker 2: was served up by Frost Brewed cors Light Shoes Chill.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Josh Schaefer, Kings broadcast play by play voice will be
- 0:43Speaker 2: joining us here in just a bit to talk more
- 0:46Speaker 2: about the update on the opposition and this game. The
- 0:48Speaker 2: head here for tonight where the crack And again face
- 0:51Speaker 2: another important four point swing game within their own division,
- 0:55Speaker 2: with rising matters as far as playoff positioning increasing by
- 0:59Speaker 2: the day after last night, they fell forward to to
- 1:03Speaker 2: the Anaheim Ducks. The Kraken ever since New Year's Day,
- 1:06Speaker 2: though ten to six into that is the third best
- 1:08Speaker 2: record in the Western Conference. But again, if Air is
- 1:12Speaker 2: repeating how much the first goal is a very important one,
- 1:14Speaker 2: with the crack And chasing as far as a four
- 1:17Speaker 2: to nothing deficit into period three before.
- 1:19Speaker 3: They came back with a pair of.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Late goals and what appeared to be a pretty spirited
- 1:24Speaker 2: rally Jordan Everley scoring at fifteen thirty one and then
- 1:27Speaker 2: Shane Wright at seventeen twenty nine, but the Kraken could
- 1:30Speaker 2: get no further. After the game, here's more reaction from
- 1:33Speaker 2: crackenhead coach Lane Lambert.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Well, yeah, it look like you guys were coming on
- 1:36Speaker 4: strong at the end of the second period, and then
- 1:38Speaker 4: you get that Trooper goal in the last minute. Look
- 1:40Speaker 4: like they had a few extra guys maybe on the
- 1:42Speaker 4: ice swinging. How much did that change? I'm a mana
- 1:45Speaker 4: of the game.
- 1:45Speaker 5: Well, I mean, obviously, you know, the the late goal
- 1:49Speaker 5: and then you know the early goal in the third.
- 1:52Speaker 6: Completely turned the game around.
- 1:55Speaker 5: Who wouldn't say around, but certainly took us almost out
- 1:58Speaker 5: of the.
- 1:59Speaker 6: Game, and we tried to back at the end, but
- 2:01Speaker 6: you know, too little, too late.
- 2:03Speaker 5: You know, we, uh, we just we weren't good enough tonight.
- 2:07Speaker 5: I've thought this is two games in a row. Now,
- 2:09Speaker 5: we played Anaheim where you know, they've looked they've looked
- 2:14Speaker 5: like the better team for better parts of the game.
- 2:17Speaker 5: So you know we're gonna have to figure that out.
- 2:20Speaker 6: Uh.
- 2:21Speaker 5: You know, we did have some moments where we were pressing.
- 2:25Speaker 5: We had opportunities in the second period on two on
- 2:28Speaker 5: once and we didn't execute them at all. And you
- 2:32Speaker 5: know you have to execute the times like that.
- 2:35Speaker 2: What did he pushed back begin to build when it
- 2:37Speaker 2: was originally for nothing and guys started to kind of
- 2:39Speaker 2: really pour more into the anaheimsm.
- 2:41Speaker 5: Well, I mean, you know we we I didn't think we.
- 2:45Speaker 5: I didn't think we had a whole lot going on,
- 2:48Speaker 5: to be honest with you.
- 2:49Speaker 6: You know, we scored off the face off and then.
- 2:52Speaker 5: You know we pulled our goalie score and pulled them
- 2:56Speaker 5: again almost scored to make it for three. So uh,
- 2:59Speaker 5: you know, we're looking to maybe pull a rabbit out
- 3:01Speaker 5: of a hat. But uh, you know, I always talk
- 3:03Speaker 5: about leaving a game up to chance, and I didn't
- 3:07Speaker 5: think we were good enough. So the game was left
- 3:09Speaker 5: up to chance. And when you do that, you end
- 3:11Speaker 5: up on the wrong side more often than not in.
- 3:13Speaker 4: The specific division of battles like this much as a
- 3:16Speaker 4: part of the point sing table.
- 3:18Speaker 6: It hurts a lot.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you know, uh, we were tired with
- 3:22Speaker 5: them coming into the game, and now we're not, so,
- 3:25Speaker 5: you know, not a not a good night for our team.
- 3:28Speaker 4: You know, I haven't seem to be getting a lot
- 3:29Speaker 4: of guys in front of the net on Grubauer for
- 3:32Speaker 4: some of those long shots. I mean, we were you
- 3:33Speaker 4: pleased in general with the the the physical play in
- 3:36Speaker 4: front of the net or was there more of that?
- 3:38Speaker 6: Well that's what they do.
- 3:39Speaker 5: They got some big bodies there. You know, I thought,
- 3:43Speaker 5: you know, I thought for the most.
- 3:44Speaker 6: Part, we did a.
- 3:46Speaker 5: Decent job of battling.
- 3:48Speaker 6: But you know, at the end of the day, uh,
- 3:52Speaker 6: you know, we I didn't think it mattered upon very well.
- 3:56Speaker 5: I didn't think we won enough battles and certainly not
- 3:59Speaker 5: an battles in our zone to get the puck out,
- 4:02Speaker 5: which you know turned into secondary and third opportunities for them.
- 4:07Speaker 5: And you know, it just wasn't good enough tonight.
- 4:11Speaker 6: We have to dust ourselves off here.
- 4:14Speaker 5: We've got a big hockey Gamy tomorrow against la who
- 4:16Speaker 5: is arrested, and they're a big team too.
- 4:19Speaker 7: All right.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Joining us now for the second game of back to
- 4:21Speaker 2: Back is Josh Shaffer, broadcasted by play voice for the
- 4:24Speaker 2: Kings here joining us on kracking this morning, and Josh
- 4:27Speaker 2: looking forward to seeing you after this not too long
- 4:30Speaker 2: afterward the Olympic break as well. But I mean, I
- 4:33Speaker 2: think I first got begin with the whole craziness and
- 4:35Speaker 2: the standings. From what we've seen, it just feels like
- 4:38Speaker 2: you are so close to ultimate glory, being on top
- 4:40Speaker 2: and into the playoffs, and you are so close from
- 4:42Speaker 2: being just left out of the dance. So I mean,
- 4:45Speaker 2: how would you have reacted if somebody told you about
- 4:49Speaker 2: four months ago this is how close, compact and tied
- 4:53Speaker 2: the Western Conference would be.
- 4:55Speaker 7: I think that I would have expected how tight everything was.
- 5:00Speaker 7: I don't know if I would expect the certain teams
- 5:03Speaker 7: that are in the positions that they are, and how
- 5:06Speaker 7: these teams have gotten the points. I mean, you know
- 5:10Speaker 7: it the same way I do. Like you look at
- 5:11Speaker 7: the Eastern Conference and the teams that are all at
- 5:13Speaker 7: the top of the division standings have accumulated points or
- 5:17Speaker 7: point totals. First of all, that are higher than the
- 5:20Speaker 7: teams in the Pacific, Like first place Vegas has sixty
- 5:22Speaker 7: four points. You look at Colorado, who's in first in
- 5:24Speaker 7: the Central, they have eighty one. Tampa Bay has seventy
- 5:28Speaker 7: four in the Atlantic, Carolina has seventy four in the Metropolitan.
- 5:31Speaker 7: So they've all been, you know, outpacing the Pacific Division teams.
- 5:36Speaker 7: But it's not just the point totals that have surprised me.
- 5:40Speaker 7: It's how these teams are getting points. I mean, Vegas
- 5:43Speaker 7: and the Kings are both on pace to each snap
- 5:47Speaker 7: the NHL's overtime lost record in a season. That's how
- 5:52Speaker 7: they've gotten points with these one goal games, and Vegas
- 5:56Speaker 7: and the Kings have been very similar for example. So
- 5:58Speaker 7: I think that I think that I'm not surprised at
- 6:01Speaker 7: how tight things are at this point in the season,
- 6:03Speaker 7: just with the way that some of the teams reloaded
- 6:05Speaker 7: in the offseason. You know, we thought that that Anaheim
- 6:08Speaker 7: was going to.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Be a lot better.
- 6:09Speaker 7: We thought that Utah was going to be a lot better.
- 6:11Speaker 7: We thought that Seattle might take a step in the
- 6:13Speaker 7: right direction. What I did not expect was that Vegas
- 6:17Speaker 7: and Edmonton and Seattle and Anaheim and La and San
- 6:20Speaker 7: Jose are all going back and forth in the Pacific,
- 6:24Speaker 7: and Utah has kind of been that external team in
- 6:26Speaker 7: the Central but in the Western Conference that has been
- 6:30Speaker 7: kind of a pain in the rear for all these
- 6:32Speaker 7: other Pacific Division teams that are battling for a wildcard spot.
- 6:35Speaker 7: So I'm not surprised at how tight things are. I
- 6:38Speaker 7: am a little surprised at how we've gotten to this
- 6:41Speaker 7: point already, and I have no idea what's in store
- 6:44Speaker 7: for the rest of the season.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Crackett had played fifty five games, the Kings had played
- 6:48Speaker 2: fifty four. So I think when you measure this game
- 6:51Speaker 2: this week and then what's to come, because I mean
- 6:54Speaker 2: we're only into early February, but I mean after this
- 6:57Speaker 2: roughly a two and a half week break, and then
- 6:58Speaker 2: all of a sudden, it feels like more urch is
- 7:00Speaker 2: hitting us right in the face. So how do you
- 7:03Speaker 2: measure the weight of this game from the King side?
- 7:05Speaker 7: I mean, I think it's absolutely massive because now the
- 7:08Speaker 7: next four So we just talked about this the other
- 7:11Speaker 7: day on the air, Darryl and I did after we
- 7:13Speaker 7: wrapped up the game in Carolina, which is, yeah, the
- 7:15Speaker 7: King's got a point yet they're three to one and
- 7:17Speaker 7: one on the road trip. Seven points out of a
- 7:19Speaker 7: possible ten against some pretty good Eastern Conference teams. That's great,
- 7:22Speaker 7: you know, going in, if you would have said seven
- 7:24Speaker 7: out of ten, or it was a six game trip,
- 7:25Speaker 7: one game got postponed, so ultimately it ends up being
- 7:28Speaker 7: seven points out of a possible ten. You take that
- 7:31Speaker 7: any day of the week for a five game East
- 7:33Speaker 7: Coast road trip against some really good teams, including some
- 7:36Speaker 7: first place teams. But now it's not that you're concerned
- 7:40Speaker 7: about dropping points to Eastern Conference teams. You're concerned about
- 7:45Speaker 7: four consecutive games two before the break, two after the
- 7:49Speaker 7: break against division rivals. So the Kings have Seattle and
- 7:52Speaker 7: Vegas back to back, there's the Olympic break, and then
- 7:55Speaker 7: it's Vegas and Edmonton back to back. That's how magnified
- 7:59Speaker 7: these points is. Even going into the break, I mean,
- 8:03Speaker 7: Kings lose back to back games to Seattle. In Vegas,
- 8:06Speaker 7: they win back to back games. You're in a completely
- 8:09Speaker 7: different spot going into the Olympic break, and I think
- 8:11Speaker 7: taking the first game against the Kraken on its own,
- 8:15Speaker 7: I think it's a huge opportunity for the Kings to
- 8:18Speaker 7: maybe right the ship a little bit. And you know
- 8:20Speaker 7: you've been around these last two meetings between the Kings
- 8:23Speaker 7: and the Kraken, both games in December, the one in Seattle.
- 8:28Speaker 7: That's a game that the Kings feel like got away
- 8:30Speaker 7: from them. They feel like they were the better team.
- 8:32Speaker 7: It slipped away in the final minute, and then it
- 8:35Speaker 7: slipped away in overtime. That's a game that the Kings
- 8:37Speaker 7: were very upset about losing. And then you come back
- 8:39Speaker 7: to the two games for the Kings before the Christmas break,
- 8:43Speaker 7: which was a home loss to Columbus and it was
- 8:45Speaker 7: a bad one, and then the next day a game
- 8:47Speaker 7: against Seattle where again they felt like they played well
- 8:50Speaker 7: but did not get the right result that they thought
- 8:53Speaker 7: they were going to have. So it's two losses against
- 8:55Speaker 7: Seattle in a row, points that they desperately could have used,
- 8:59Speaker 7: maybe at this point in the season, make them feel
- 9:01Speaker 7: a little bit better about where they're at, In fact,
- 9:04Speaker 7: only one point behind Seattle in the Pacific Division standings
- 9:07Speaker 7: right now, you don't drop those two results from from
- 9:11Speaker 7: games and efforts where you felt like you deserved a
- 9:13Speaker 7: little bit better. Kings were maybe first place in the division,
- 9:17Speaker 7: but on the other side of that Seattle came back
- 9:20Speaker 7: in both of those games, deserved the points that they got,
- 9:23Speaker 7: so I think it's I think it's huge, Like this
- 9:25Speaker 7: is a game where I think the Kings know that
- 9:26Speaker 7: they can they can get a win, as Seattle probably
- 9:29Speaker 7: does too, But it's huge. They've been They've been very
- 9:32Speaker 7: interesting in back to backs this year. Not very good
- 9:34Speaker 7: in game one and exemplary in game two. But game
- 9:38Speaker 7: one of the back to back is at home against Seattle.
- 9:41Speaker 7: It's a game that I'm sure the Kings know that
- 9:43Speaker 7: they could really use the two points before going to
- 9:45Speaker 7: Vegas the next night.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Josha for joining us right now on kracken this morning
- 9:49Speaker 2: ahead of the Krake and the Kings for the third
- 9:51Speaker 2: matchup last time. They'll meet in Los Angeles for the
- 9:54Speaker 2: regular season, by the way, before the krack and get
- 9:56Speaker 2: out of here for the Olympic break. The Kings are
- 9:58Speaker 2: not too far behind, Josh. This matchup should have nothing
- 10:02Speaker 2: short of savvy the crack and one of the more
- 10:04Speaker 2: older teams in the NHL. The Kings, though age y,
- 10:07Speaker 2: second oldest roster in the NHL, so I mean there's
- 10:11Speaker 2: experience an age here. It's a way and maybe I
- 10:13Speaker 2: think is how far they can go? Would you consider
- 10:16Speaker 2: andj Copatar, Drew Dowdy, Darcy kemp or Corey Perry as well,
- 10:20Speaker 2: But what kind of a role are they going to
- 10:22Speaker 2: play when this season starts back up later this month.
- 10:26Speaker 7: It's gonna be interesting because Dowdy and Kemper are both
- 10:30Speaker 7: going to the Olympics for Team Canada. I'm not sure
- 10:33Speaker 7: how the goaltending is going to shake up for the
- 10:35Speaker 7: Canadians going over to Italy. I think there's a very
- 10:38Speaker 7: high chance that Kemper plays a very big role in it,
- 10:42Speaker 7: and some you know, you just never know how how
- 10:44Speaker 7: some of those tournaments are going to work out and
- 10:46Speaker 7: what happens when guys come back. Drew, on the other hand,
- 10:51Speaker 7: was very very committed to making the Canadian roster for
- 10:54Speaker 7: the Olympics. He earned it and good for him. Good
- 10:58Speaker 7: on him, he deserves it. Since since you know that
- 11:02Speaker 7: news came out, the Kings have slumped a little bit,
- 11:05Speaker 7: Drew's played a massive role in the King's trying to
- 11:07Speaker 7: get going. Obviously, he's a big leader as well. He
- 11:10Speaker 7: just snapped actually a career long point drought for him
- 11:14Speaker 7: with his seven hundredth career point in the NHL, so
- 11:17Speaker 7: a big one for him to get that before going
- 11:19Speaker 7: to the Olympics. But those two guys are huge, and
- 11:23Speaker 7: there of course they're both, you know, very focused on
- 11:25Speaker 7: going to the Olympics for Team Canada andjre Kopotars missed
- 11:28Speaker 7: the last eleven games for the Kings, came back and
- 11:30Speaker 7: has now played in two games in Philadelphia and Carolina,
- 11:34Speaker 7: which I think has been huge for the Kings in
- 11:36Speaker 7: the faceoff circle because they have not fared particularly well
- 11:41Speaker 7: since he had left with an injury. And then Corey Perry,
- 11:45Speaker 7: I mean Corey Perry came into last night's game in
- 11:50Speaker 7: Carolina with points in six of his last seven games,
- 11:53Speaker 7: thirteen points in his last twelve, and twenty eight points
- 11:57Speaker 7: on the season. He's been I think people expected him
- 12:00Speaker 7: to play a pretty significant role this year, where I'm
- 12:04Speaker 7: not totally sure, you know, I thought that he would
- 12:06Speaker 7: play a role on the power play and play an
- 12:09Speaker 7: important bottom six role in the lineup, but also a leader,
- 12:14Speaker 7: and he has I think exceeded a lot of people's expectations.
- 12:18Speaker 7: So it's not just that you have maybe the quiet
- 12:20Speaker 7: leadership from Corey Perry, the very vocal leadership from Drew Dowdy,
- 12:24Speaker 7: and then kind of that veteran presence from Copatar and
- 12:27Speaker 7: Darcy Kemper, who are both very good players and at
- 12:29Speaker 7: the top of their field as well. But those four
- 12:32Speaker 7: guys just have a very commanding presence in the room
- 12:35Speaker 7: on the ice. You see the way that Copatar is
- 12:38Speaker 7: respected around the league, especially here in his last season,
- 12:41Speaker 7: and the way that you know, players have approached him
- 12:43Speaker 7: before and after games, and that's been awesome to see.
- 12:47Speaker 7: But those those four guys I think are really important
- 12:49Speaker 7: for the Kings and kind of getting things over the line.
- 12:53Speaker 7: But it can't it can't just be them. It hasn't
- 12:56Speaker 7: just been them. Obviously, Kempe and Clark and la Fair
- 13:00Speaker 7: and Quentin Byfield have all played massive roles this season.
- 13:03Speaker 7: It's about, I think, finding a balance between the players
- 13:06Speaker 7: who are probably considered to be the next wave of
- 13:09Speaker 7: the La Kings and the Kings of the present and
- 13:12Speaker 7: the future, and the guys who are the veterans of
- 13:16Speaker 7: the group and a player like Kopatar who's obviously not
- 13:19Speaker 7: going to be around past this season. So I think
- 13:22Speaker 7: the Kings want to maximize their opportunity and a lot
- 13:25Speaker 7: of it falls on the shoulders of those guys and
- 13:27Speaker 7: that leadership role that they play.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Josh, after this Vegas is coming up, We're off here
- 13:34Speaker 2: for about two and a half weeks, and there's folks
- 13:36Speaker 2: going here, there, everywhere. I'm married to kids, both all
- 13:40Speaker 2: three are in school. My wife's the school teacher also,
- 13:42Speaker 2: So the staycation thing is kind of the go route.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Here for me. But what are you looking forward to
- 13:46Speaker 3: here for the Olympic break.
- 13:48Speaker 7: Well, we're going to have a little bit of a
- 13:50Speaker 7: good mix of still being busy and also finding time
- 13:55Speaker 7: to relax. So right after the quick Vegas trip for us,
- 14:00Speaker 7: my fiance and I are going out to Arizona to
- 14:02Speaker 7: see her family. We're having a joint wedding shower with
- 14:05Speaker 7: some friends and family that we're really excited for. And
- 14:10Speaker 7: then we're gonna come back and we're doing two days
- 14:13Speaker 7: at Disneyland, which we have not done in a very
- 14:16Speaker 7: long time, so we're excited for that. And then after that, Mike,
- 14:20Speaker 7: we're doing absolutely nothing for the next week and we
- 14:22Speaker 7: are hanging out and relaxing and recuperating before we get
- 14:27Speaker 7: back into the grind.
- 14:28Speaker 6: That is going to be the end of February.
- 14:30Speaker 2: In March, I think the last time I did Disneyland
- 14:33Speaker 2: with my wife back then my fiance. We tapped out
- 14:37Speaker 2: at about nine o'clock, so let me know how that
- 14:39Speaker 2: goes on that end. But hey, Josh, appreciate this, have
- 14:42Speaker 2: a great call, see around and we'll see you around
- 14:45Speaker 2: the building. Thanks, Josh, appreciate you.
- 14:48Speaker 7: Thanks Mike. Always a pleasure, all.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Right, Josh shape for joining us. As the Kings have
- 14:51Speaker 2: two days of rest under their belt and they're underway
- 14:54Speaker 2: with seven of the next eight home games on home
- 14:57Speaker 2: ice with a crack and aiming for two wins out
- 15:00Speaker 2: of two games in Los Angeles this season and a
- 15:03Speaker 2: three to zero record head to head here for this year.
- 15:06Speaker 2: On the Kraken side, you look at the top line,
- 15:09Speaker 2: can they get a going once again? They're at a
- 15:11Speaker 2: point per game average against the Kings this season, that
- 15:13Speaker 2: being Jared mccan, Maddy Veniers in Jordan Neberley with a
- 15:16Speaker 2: big milestone on tap. McCann due to play in game
- 15:19Speaker 2: seven hundred of his NHL career the Kings right now,
- 15:23Speaker 2: twenty three, seventeen and fourteen. And if you're a fan
- 15:25Speaker 2: of a loser point, you're getting your money's worth. Their
- 15:28Speaker 2: fourteen overtime losses tied with Vegas, just four away from
- 15:32Speaker 2: the NHL record, but they have just one regulation loss
- 15:36Speaker 2: over the last nine games. They come off a three
- 15:38Speaker 2: to two overtime loss at Carolina on Sunday, and they
- 15:41Speaker 2: have a player of their own on milestone watch on
- 15:44Speaker 2: Jacob Patar's next point will be thirteen hundred for him
- 15:48Speaker 2: in his NHL career, so the Kraken trying to keep
- 15:51Speaker 2: him and others at bay here for this evening. Just
- 15:54Speaker 2: one point separates these two teams. The Kraken sixty one
- 15:58Speaker 2: points in wildcard spot number two, the Kings one point back.
- 16:02Speaker 3: It should be a good one. We hope that you
- 16:03Speaker 3: can certainly join.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Us once again face off a little past seven o'clock
- 16:07Speaker 2: Pacific time, airtime at six thirty right here on ninety
