- 2:02Spencer, it's good to have you back on the show, man.
- 2:05I was. I was excited when we joined the
- 2:07college Huddle and found out that 23 personnel was going to
- 2:11be the official Texas Tech representative on the college
- 2:14huddle. But it's been I think four
- 2:16years, three years since we last had you on.
- 2:18How are you doing today, man? Yeah.
- 2:20It's been a while. It's excited to hang out with K
- 2:26State brethren. I consider y'all brethren,
- 2:30despite Texas Tech not having any much of success against you
- 2:34guys, the fan base we are most tolerant of are you guys.
- 2:39So I've I've actually hosted a a fair number of of Wildcats down
- 2:44in in Lubbock. We went out to eat, hung out at
- 2:49tailgates. Always a good time with you guys
- 2:52and I can't say the same for literally anybody else.
- 2:54So excited that you guys would want to have me on to talk some
- 2:59some football this year. So.
- 3:01Yeah, absolutely. And, and it's been an
- 3:03interesting year for Texas Tech. Just a little bit of a zoom out
- 3:07on this series. So it's not a historic rivalry.
- 3:11It's a it's a game, a series that's been played.
- 3:13Obviously, the first Big 12 matchup ever happened in 1996
- 3:17between the two teams. But this will be the 24th
- 3:19meeting between K State and Texas Tech K State is 15 and 9
- 3:23all time but has won eight straight.
- 3:26Mahomes was quarterback at Texas Tech Go Chiefs.
- 3:29By the way, for those listening, Mahomes was the quarterback in
- 3:33the last win for Texas Tech. It's it's been kind of a tale of
- 3:37when we look at this match of two very different teams.
- 3:39Texas Tech currently tied for third in the conference, but was
- 3:43by a lot of measures a lot of people's favorite to win the Big
- 3:4712 this year. They're currently ranked 13th
- 3:50nationally and was really the talk of the Big 12 nationally
- 3:54this offseason with Cody Campbell's 40 million in dollar
- 3:58investment in this year's roster alone.
- 4:01K State having this offseason coming into the season really
- 4:04with all the hype imaginable as well, just outside of the
- 4:08investment into the team. There were a lot of people that
- 4:10thought K State and Texas Tech could have been two of those
- 4:13teams squaring off in Arlington at the end of the season.
- 4:16But K State starts the season falling flat and has won three
- 4:21of their last four games. So is really starting to ride a
- 4:23high in in coming into this matchup is one of the hottest
- 4:26teams in the Big 12 now. So it's an interesting matchup,
- 4:30especially with Tech coming off, you know, 42 to nothing route of
- 4:33Oklahoma State, but Arizona State dropping their first loss
- 4:37of the season against the Sun Devils in Tempe a couple weeks
- 4:40ago. So I guess just to kind of zoom
- 4:42out what what's kind of the vibe around Texas Tech with with the
- 4:45loss a couple weeks ago? But Boat, yeah, I'm dominating
- 4:48Oklahoma State and having this $40 million roster that we've
- 4:51all heard so much about. So one, it's it's interesting to
- 4:54hear that number changes anytime anybody ever brings it up.
- 4:57I don't know what the actual number is.
- 4:59It literally could be 25, it could be 50.
- 5:02It makes no difference to me. I love to see that there's
- 5:06somebody that was willing to put their money, literally money
- 5:09with their mouth was like, hey, I, I'm, you know, a letter
- 5:13winner of this program from 20 years ago under Mike Leach,
- 5:16super successful in the oil and oil and gas business and said, I
- 5:21want to see Tex Tex, Tex succeed.
- 5:26We saw all the things kind of starting to to snowball and and
- 5:30gain a lot of momentum starting or probably early December of
- 5:35last season when, when that this recruiting class are to come
- 5:37together or the the portal class specifically.
- 5:42And it was like, well, like these are a bunch of guys that
- 5:46have been good individually. And, and the question was how
- 5:50all the pieces were going to come together.
- 5:53If that was going to be a thing as it's going to be a team.
- 5:54We're going to be a bunch of individuals trying to be, you
- 5:57know, ball out for it for their own on, you know, on on future.
- 6:04And then like the season started and you're like, OK, like I I
- 6:07can see like how these things are kind of are coming together
- 6:10and it just continued to to develop and build.
- 6:15But like looking at the Texas Tech schedule, like we had no
- 6:19test going into salt letting into Salt Lake.
- 6:21It was an FCS program out of Arkansas.
- 6:26We had Kent State and then Oregon State and nobody pose any
- 6:32kind of threat or or any kind of challenge.
- 6:36So leaving that third game three and O, you're like, well, I mean
- 6:41kind of think things are are going to be good this year, but
- 6:45we're literally going on the road against the team that
- 6:48everybody is is is thinking going to challenge for the
- 6:51conference title this year. If Dan Pierce back and he's
- 6:55healthy, it's going to be, you know, him and, and then that
- 6:59offensive line and then they're, they're really strong defense.
- 7:03And for 3 1/2 quarters of the game, it was a it was a, it was
- 7:08a slog, right? Is a, is a, is a boxing match
- 7:10back and forth. You know, Morton has dealt with
- 7:14his own injuries and he he went out during that game and Will
- 7:17Hammond came in and he was able to to ignite a fire there.
- 7:24And it's been back and forth about like, you know, who's
- 7:26healthy behind Center for the Red Raiders this year.
- 7:32You get a really weird game this past weekend against Oklahoma
- 7:37State just to bounce around a little bit like you lost in
- 7:40Tempe in a game that I think a lot of Texas Tech fans felt like
- 7:44they had no business being in with the how the game played
- 7:46out. But you took the lead with two
- 7:49minutes to go. And you're like, oh, man, OK,
- 7:51we're going to escape Tempe with a win because you took the lead.
- 7:56Your defense has, like this season proven like it's it's
- 8:00been it's been fine. Like you're in a position to win
- 8:03the game. Not once.
- 8:07Like, did it cross your mind going into that final
- 8:10possession? Did you think like, OK, Arizona
- 8:13State is about to drive the field here?
- 8:16And ultimately, like, obviously Tech, tech Tech loses and
- 8:19probably should have lost the game with how the rest of the
- 8:21game played out. I mean, you scored 15 points in
- 8:24like a 92nd span there, like the very 3 1/2 minutes to go or
- 8:31whatever it was. And then you get like this game
- 8:36against Oklahoma State where you want to bounce back.
- 8:39But everything about that program says like there's
- 8:43nothing to gain. It's like playing an FCS
- 8:45opponent. Like there's literally nothing
- 8:47to gain here if you struggle. Like it's going to be like
- 8:52questions are going to come out from everywhere if you win the
- 8:56game, which Texas Tech did like is like, oh, well, you did what
- 8:58you're supposed to do. And this is what tech tech this
- 9:02is what I'm I'm experiencing this week.
- 9:03Like I left that game a 42 to 0 win.
- 9:08Like I should feel better about this game.
- 9:10And I don't like there enough questions here, Like I don't
- 9:13like feeling this way. And of course, leaving the game.
- 9:16We knew Hammond went down and like don't love non contact
- 9:19injuries. Then it comes out on Sunday.
- 9:20He tore his ACM. He he's going to be out knew
- 9:23that Morton was technically available to play against
- 9:29Arizona State. They said he was going to be
- 9:32emerging situation only didn't end up playing obviously same
- 9:39situation this past weekend, but he was much further along in his
- 9:42his recovery. So much so that like Hammond
- 9:46goes down towards the end of the second quarter, the team comes
- 9:50out of halftime, Morton is suited up like he's ready to go
- 9:53in. And the way that the offense
- 9:58kind of put enough out there in the beginning of the third
- 10:01quarter to score again and get up to 35 to 0.
- 10:03It's like there's not really any challenge here.
- 10:05Oklahoma State offense can't move the ball.
- 10:08They also subbed out their call, their quarterback, but like the
- 10:14guy playing quarterback Sam Jackson.
- 10:17And so like there was really wasn't like a challenge there.
- 10:19So like, OK, we're not going to put Morton in any kind of chance
- 10:22to get hurt or to re aggravate or anything.
- 10:26I would have loved to see him him get some snaps coming into
- 10:29this game this weekend because he hasn't played in two weeks.
- 10:34Technically. He's only played one complete
- 10:35game all season and it was in Houston.
- 10:39Looked good for most of that game.
- 10:42Once Tex Tech got rolling, there were some questions there when
- 10:46Tex Tech had all those possessions that started off in
- 10:50the red zone real close to scoring and ended up picking 3
- 10:54field goals. You're like man, like this is
- 10:56really clunky start and then end up running away with it.
- 11:01So all this like it's been weird.
- 11:02Like I don't know what to do with my hands.
- 11:04Tech Tech not typically in this position, hasn't been since the
- 11:07last time Tech Tech actually won up in Manhattan.
- 11:12It's been historically offense led and not that the offense
- 11:16isn't good this year. It it can be.
- 11:17It's been more it's been more explosive than what we've seen
- 11:24than just like consistent. But defensively is where Texas
- 11:30Tech has really made their money this season.
- 11:33I mean, they're they're allowing teams to score only 20 or sorry,
- 11:36only 20, only 12 points a game has just a ridiculous pass rush,
- 11:44a really thin but very solid group of linebackers, defensive
- 11:50secondary. The corners are really good.
- 11:52The safeties can be had. But like typically there's not
- 11:56been a lot of opportunities for people to get at at the
- 11:58safeties. BJ Jordan #7 has been the the
- 12:03biggest target that defense, our offensive have gone after and
- 12:07he's given us some big plays. But the front 7 is not allowed
- 12:13many teams, many quarterbacks chances to even test them.
- 12:17So it's weird, like I, I, I look at matchups as like, man, that
- 12:23this game should be XY and Z. Of course it never works out
- 12:25that way. Like you should feel confident
- 12:27doing the XY and Z or whatever it is.
- 12:29Tech tech just doesn't do it. They win the games that they,
- 12:33they, they shouldn't. They lose games.
- 12:35They shouldn't. You, you should be good this
- 12:40season. But like there is still so many,
- 12:42so many question marks around. Like can the offense be
- 12:45consistently good? Can we score in the red zone
- 12:47when we have all the opportunities?
- 12:48Can we keep our quarterbacks healthy?
- 12:52I don't know It's it's it's it's a well ride.
- 12:55We don't know what's going on ever like to be, you know, 7 and
- 13:00one at this point. Then anything else one and seven
- 13:04was not not like a possibility, but like rather have this
- 13:07problem then trying to find out who's going to be the coach here
- 13:12in a couple of months or what the roster is going to look like
- 13:15or how many people are going to be sitting out this weekend
- 13:17because they want to preserve eligibility.
- 13:19All the things that programs like Oklahoma State or
- 13:22experiencing or LSU or any other coach or any other program
- 13:26that's lost their coach. So it's a wall ride, man.
- 13:31Yeah, I'd like to probably say the same for K State.
- 13:34It's been a wild ride this year. But let's get into a little bit
- 13:38more specifics, and I want to start with the offense.
- 13:41Texas Tech really shown this year, pretty dynamic offense,
- 13:46leading the Big 12 in multiple statistical categories,
- 13:50including touchdowns, points scored.
- 13:54They've been third in passing yards with the kind of tandem of
- 13:58quarterbacks that they've had to play this year.
- 14:01Just overall has shown a really great offensive scheme.
- 14:09K State defensively, you know, just kind of thinking about what
- 14:12we've been this year. They've improved quite a bit in
- 14:14recent games, but I think this Texas Tech offense is going to
- 14:19be one that's going to be a little bit tougher to try and
- 14:21manage, especially with a balanced approach, some really
- 14:25great running backs and and obviously at the quarterback
- 14:29position, you've seen some really, really good players, you
- 14:31know, kind of come through here this year.
- 14:33So just give us a little bit about maybe what the biggest key
- 14:37to Texas Tech's offensive success has been this year, and
- 14:41maybe talk a little bit about where you have expected a little
- 14:45bit more success and maybe haven't seen it.
- 14:47Yeah. So I think what's been really
- 14:51key to what what Textech has done offensively is being
- 14:55complimentary and not like balanced so much, but like it
- 14:59hasn't been Baron Morton or bust.
- 15:03It hasn't been like your outside target only has, like it has to
- 15:08be Caleb Douglas and nobody else can can catch a ball.
- 15:13Your running backs, you know, coming into the season, it was
- 15:16expected Quentin Joyner was going to be your starter.
- 15:17It goes down late and fall camp went with an ACL.
- 15:22You're like, well, we're going to roll with Cam Dickey and
- 15:24Jacoby Williams, who had decent freshman campaigns, were thought
- 15:29to be a good 2-3 behind Joyner. Your offensive line, the pieces
- 15:37that you pulled together have proven that they, they, they,
- 15:41they can move guys around and, and open up running lane.
- 15:43So being able to compliment and, and, and keep defenses honest
- 15:51and like you can't creep up and, and and load the box because we
- 15:54do have enough playmakers, you know, the school positions that
- 15:59like we, we can throw around enough to to get light boxes.
- 16:04We have enough offensive line talent and, and, and juice in
- 16:08the backfield that like we can run it.
- 16:11The quarterback run game should be completely burned out of the
- 16:14playbook moving forward from the rest of the season.
- 16:17You want, you want Morton to be to be maintained, you know,
- 16:22upright, not running or, or doing anything to jeopardize
- 16:26that because the guy behind them is a transferring from wake 4th
- 16:30Mitch Griffiths. He played a little bit this past
- 16:32weekend, but like, you don't want him playing no, no shot
- 16:36against him. But like, if Tex Tech is going
- 16:38to do anything this season is going to be with Baron Morton
- 16:40behind center. We thought we could be OK with
- 16:43Will Hammond, especially coming out of that Utah game.
- 16:48But then games against like they were stretches against Kansas,
- 16:52obviously all of Arizona State except for the last, you know, a
- 16:55little bit of the fourth quarter and then the beginning of the
- 16:59the Oklahoma State game, as good as it was to for Tech Tech to
- 17:01put up 21 points quick, it was a kick return.
- 17:04It was a blocked punt that Tech Tech recovered on like the 20.
- 17:08And then there was 1 sustained Dr. that that got them the the
- 17:1221 quick points against Oklahoma State.
- 17:15So really want to keep, you know, the balanced approach on
- 17:20offense. That's like I said, what's been
- 17:23helping keep things moving. Not keying in on on anyone.
- 17:28Guy being able to stay committed to running.
- 17:30Sometimes with this offense, it's shown like it kind of takes
- 17:33a second to get going. A driver to, you know, against
- 17:39Utah there there were times when it felt like our offensive
- 17:43coordinator was kind of abandoning the run.
- 17:44Same thing against Arizona State.
- 17:48Like what's worked really well for Texas Tech to keep the
- 17:50offense moving is actually be to run the ball.
- 17:55So I I would just say like the the, the offensive line and, and
- 17:59getting Cam Dickey going would be paramount to getting a
- 18:03successful start to the game for Texas Tech.
- 18:06And Speaking of that offensive line, you, you mentioned it that
- 18:09there, you know, you kind of assembled this offensive line
- 18:12and then maybe that's the storyline for every position
- 18:14group at Texas Tech that it's, you know, you, you kind of
- 18:17banded up and you really went hard to the transfer portal.
- 18:20Talk to me about this offensive line, where they came from.
- 18:24Obviously they're Rd. graders. They have to be with the, the
- 18:28rushing numbers that you're putting up at Texas Tech.
- 18:30And what kind of fronts have you seen so far that this offensive
- 18:35line has had to go against and are they prepared for what have
- 18:39what have they been most successful against?
- 18:41Four down, 3 down. Go go into detail on this
- 18:44online. Yeah, so I think so.
- 18:49Our offensive line starting left to right, left tackle Howard
- 18:52Sampson's the transfer in your left guard Will Jados was a
- 18:56transfer in he I think he was one of the first transfers to to
- 19:00to commit your center. Sheridan Wilson is a is a, you
- 19:05know, legacy player. He's young, but he's met at
- 19:08Texas Tech. You were 6th offensive line,
- 19:11which he'd play on the left side of the left guard position.
- 19:14If J Dos has to move cash. Cleveland transferred in from
- 19:17from Colorado after his freshman year.
- 19:21Right guard Davian Carter was a transfer two years ago from
- 19:26Memphis. It's really funny.
- 19:29If you look at the offensive line staying next to each other,
- 19:31it's like 65666751067. He's he's the short guy on the
- 19:36right. He's he's really good.
- 19:40And then right tackle has been kind of a rotation.
- 19:43We thought it was going to be the transferring from Illinois
- 19:45State. Hunter Zambrano, hoping to get a
- 19:47red shirt here for him. But it's been Jacob Ponton, who
- 19:51is a legacy guy. So like it's been like you
- 19:54brought in a bunch of guys. You actually had a transfer in
- 19:57from last season. I got injured, Vinny Scurry
- 20:01again trying to get him a red shirt season this year, trying
- 20:05to get all those pieces that kind of play together and and
- 20:07and gel with guys returning from injury and then whatever.
- 20:13But in terms of what they've done successful upfront, it
- 20:18actually probably has more to do with Terrence Carter, who was
- 20:24the. We thought super athletic,
- 20:27receiving tight in coming in from University of Louisiana
- 20:32early on in this season. He was absolutely incredible an
- 20:35athlete catching the ball all over the field.
- 20:40But when he started to look into it like he was doing a lot of
- 20:43dirty work on opening holes or clearing out a misassignment or
- 20:48making sure that like things just it looked a whole lot
- 20:53better when he was in the when he wasn't.
- 20:56He is coming back this week again, he's been banged up.
- 21:00So like, what does that look like?
- 21:01Is he 100%? Is he 85?
- 21:03Is he 75? So it's, it's been like, it
- 21:08hasn't been like, oh, they're really good against three man
- 21:10fronts. It's really good against 4 or
- 21:12whatever that they've they've shown that like it sometimes
- 21:17take a takes a six guy with with, with, with a tight end.
- 21:24But when Carter's in there, man, it's, it's, it's something else
- 21:27because he's he's athletic enough to, to deliver a
- 21:32devastating block. But also like you can't just
- 21:35cheat in and say like, we're going to go after the, the
- 21:37running game because he's going to leak out and just be just a
- 21:40just a unbelievable mismatch against linebackers and safeties
- 21:44because he's he's faster than you think he is.
- 21:47He's bigger like those that remember Jason Morrow for Texas
- 21:52Tech several years ago. Athletic like him, smaller than
- 21:56tomorrow, like probably a better overall tight end than tomorrow.
- 22:03Was like a big bodied receiver, which was great for the system
- 22:07he was playing in with with Mahomes and Kingsbury.
- 22:13Carter doesn't look like the stereotypical all around tight
- 22:16end. You guys are probably well
- 22:20versed and what what that should look like and how it how it all
- 22:23plays out. But like at Texas Tech, it's
- 22:25been like big receivers for us, but he's showing like, he's also
- 22:29really good as a run blocker. Love it.
- 22:34All right, moving to quarterback.
- 22:36So this has been an area of focus lately for Texas Tech Bear
- 22:40Morton will be back on Saturday. He you've already mentioned he's
- 22:45been available as an emergency backup quarterback, for lack of
- 22:48a better way to put it, for the past couple of weeks.
- 22:50But Will Hammond gets knocked out of that Oklahoma State game
- 22:54and the ball goes back into Morton's hands here.
- 22:56Morton is 1500 yards passing on the season, just north of that
- 23:00-2 rushing due to sacks more than anything, 13 touchdowns, 3
- 23:07interceptions on the year. Ultimately with Morton, we've
- 23:10seen this through his career, his health, and his ability to
- 23:13make quick decisions in the pocket before defensive pressure
- 23:16collapses. That pocket is going to be
- 23:18critical to Texas Tech success and and Morton's success
- 23:22specifically on Saturday. How confident are you in
- 23:26Morton's health and how confident are you as well that
- 23:31the the offensive line that you just talked about will be able
- 23:33to contain and and prevent the the pressure from KC's defensive
- 23:38front to allow Morton to have a healthy pocket and have
- 23:42hopefully in in for, for Texas Tech fans, a healthy game.
- 23:46So I would love to tell you I'm supremely confident in his
- 23:49health. I'm not the injury he sustained
- 23:55that he's been dealing with was a reaggravation from something
- 23:59that happened in week one. There was a late blitz pick up
- 24:02from a running back and he just got, he had a really rough hit
- 24:07against a planted leg and it looked bad, popped up.
- 24:14Everybody said no, he's fine. It's a pain tolerant thing.
- 24:17It wasn't like, you know, there wasn't ligament damage.
- 24:19There wasn't like it's like a like a lower calf strain almost.
- 24:23It wasn't a high ankle sprain the first after week one they
- 24:29said there's a lot of swelling, there's some bruising, it hurts,
- 24:32blah blah, blah. He came out and played Week 2
- 24:34just fine. Well, he played Week 2 and then
- 24:39when it happened again after the games, like he actually feels
- 24:42much better than he did after week 1.
- 24:44There's no bruising, there's no swelling like there was.
- 24:47But then he didn't play. Now for two weeks it's been a
- 24:53he'll he can go if needed. I thought you needed him and
- 24:58Tempe, but also it was early on enough at like you probably
- 25:02didn't want to break that glass if you didn't have to.
- 25:06Obviously didn't need him last week.
- 25:10His he's mobile enough to avoid pressure.
- 25:16But obviously this is what got him into the the injury
- 25:19situation he's in this year. Previous years it's been like
- 25:25rolled ankle or shoulder. That's actually the biggest
- 25:28thing that he was dealing with from this past season.
- 25:31He was limited by his throwing shoulder coming into last
- 25:34season. They said he he's he's, he's
- 25:36fine, he's healthy. But then after last season had
- 25:38elective surgery and said all he his shoulder should be fine,
- 25:41whatever looks like. Well, which one was it?
- 25:44Was he fine but bad enough he needed surgery on it?
- 25:50And then this past week, like, oh, his leg is much better than
- 25:52it was week 1, but then hasn't played for two weeks.
- 25:55I don't think that's that's typically the way that like
- 25:57Texas Tech and and Joey McGuire have handled transparency issues
- 26:00with like injury, but also like there's nobody else.
- 26:07Like it's Mitch Griffiths who is a transfer.
- 26:09Like he's good, but like, he's not good.
- 26:12He's fine. Really hope that Morton's ready
- 26:15to go health wise soon, like rested.
- 26:20I mean he's been able to take a lot of mental reps with the team
- 26:22the past couple weeks. Not that I think like you need
- 26:26multiple weeks to scheme against anybody, but like he's had the
- 26:30opportunity to to be working out on the mental side.
- 26:34Offensive line should be good enough to like not have him be
- 26:39running for his life regardless like he was.
- 26:44He was under pressure a lot from the Utah front and that John
- 26:48Henry Daly kid was just a a nightmare.
- 26:54I just I don't think there's anybody left on the schedule
- 26:56that poses that same risk. But still, like with a leg
- 27:02injury, you, you, you have to expect even as as non mobile as
- 27:07Morton is, his mobility is going to be limited.
- 27:10So that that gives me pause for concern.
- 27:15I I, I don't know I I, I, I hope that the offensive line is ready
- 27:21to to face AI would say improving defense in front front
- 27:26from Kansas State. Y'all did get, you know, after
- 27:30Jaylen Daniels last week. Everybody does apparently, But
- 27:36I, I just for the sake of Texas Tech season, you really can't
- 27:41afford to have Morton miss any more time.
- 27:45Kansas State is not a tune up opponent in any any starts like
- 27:48that. That's not what I'm trying to
- 27:49say. But like you also can't have him
- 27:54missing more time and being ready to go any further this
- 27:58season. If that makes like like again,
- 28:00I'm I'm not trying to say Kansas State is any kind of a tune up.
- 28:03This is going to be a tough game regardless.
- 28:08Like if Morton was 100% healthy I would be a little bit more
- 28:11confident that how this game may may go.
- 28:15I'm not. I think he should be OK starting
- 28:23wise. I think the offensive line a lot
- 28:25of I thinks should be OK to keep him clean enough to not
- 28:30reaggravate something. We're also battered as tech fans
- 28:35with our offensive coordinators lately and just our string of
- 28:39quarterback injuries going back to even Taylor Potts when he got
- 28:45smoked by Sergio Kendall in Austin and what like 2009.
- 28:48Since then, we've not made it a season with a quarterback.
- 28:51It's always been 234 guys and it's been ridiculous to do that.
- 28:56I, I was doing the preview for you guys this week.
- 29:00You have had, you've had one player outside of Avery attempt
- 29:07to pass and it was 1 pass attempt.
- 29:11We, we, we rotate like 2 and three guys a week sometimes.
- 29:14And it's like it's ridiculous that we we're doing that still.
- 29:18And sometimes it's like our offensive coordinator putting
- 29:21our quarterbacks in this position.
- 29:24I mean, yeah, there's a lot to say there.
- 29:28I, I think, like I said, going back, Morton should be good to
- 29:33go. I'm not not, I'm not 100%
- 29:36confident. I think the offensive line
- 29:39should be up to the task. Y'all are getting better up
- 29:42front. Y'all got y'all got after
- 29:44Daniels. There's got to be some momentum
- 29:46and some confidence building there.
- 29:49Especially looking across the line and seeing a limited
- 29:51mobility quarterback that it's kind of fragile.
- 29:54I'm sure there, there are some optimism to, to, to get after
- 29:57him. So I I don't love that match up
- 29:59right now. Yeah.
- 30:02And funny enough, that one pass attempt was actually a tight end
- 30:05and not a quarterback, and it was an interception.
- 30:09But true freshman tight end. True freshman tight end.
- 30:13So I, I will just say like, don't you just love Matt Wells?
- 30:18Drawing. Up a pass attempt pass attempt
- 30:20for a tight end. In the, in the grand scheme of
- 30:22things, he's he's definitely improved.
- 30:25I think in some of these games in this little kind of win
- 30:29streak we've had. Let's talk about the running
- 30:31backs a little bit and a guy that a lot of K State fans, if
- 30:33you're watching Texas Tech are familiar with Cameron Dickey
- 30:38leading the team in rushing yards over 670 rushing yards
- 30:42this year. Like 1/3 of those were against
- 30:45KUA couple weeks ago, but he's averaging 6 yards a carry, which
- 30:50is pretty good. Definitely in the running back
- 30:52front, you got a couple guys behind him, Jacoby Williams,
- 30:55Adam Hill, who's shown some promise, getting some yards and
- 31:00also getting some stuff through the air as well.
- 31:02So kind of using a little bit of the running back in the passing
- 31:05game just seems like multi purpose backs across the board,
- 31:08which is definitely good with that dynamic offense.
- 31:12You know, K State's rushing defense, yeah, they've done
- 31:14pretty decent against the run. They're 43rd and defensive
- 31:17efficiency and against the run this year, which is up from 75th
- 31:23from last week. So against KU, they moved up a
- 31:27good amount in the rush defensive efficiency.
- 31:30So talk to us a little bit about what opposing defenses have done
- 31:34to try and limit Texas Tech's rushing offense and and what is
- 31:39Texas Tech doing to kind of incorporate some of these
- 31:41running backs into the passing game?
- 31:44Sure. OK.
- 31:48So in terms of incorporating running backs in the passing
- 31:50game, I think you saw a lot more last week of Jacoby Williams
- 31:53being a pass catcher. That was the plan pre season was
- 31:57he's too electric to leave off the field and you didn't want to
- 32:01have him just be a third string running back behind Joyner and
- 32:05Dickey. He was going to be your primary
- 32:07kick returner. He was going to be your your
- 32:10scat gadget. Back when Joyner went down and
- 32:14kind of pushed everybody up a spot, like all of that was
- 32:17scrap. Like we can't have Williams
- 32:19returning kicks full time. We can't have him be the primary
- 32:22back. We saw a lot of that come back
- 32:25in. I think we're at the point of
- 32:26the season we're like, again, not not because we needed
- 32:30something against Oklahoma State, but I think we're getting
- 32:32to the point in the season we're like we just got to start
- 32:35pushing everything out there. What we've been successful at
- 32:41running the ball one is is scheming things up.
- 32:44It's not like like we're just opening massive holes, but we're
- 32:47getting enough balance in the offense and typically been put
- 32:53into a pretty good run. Fits by whoever's behind century
- 32:55typically been Morton reading defenses pre snap and getting
- 33:01into the right call. M Dickey is faster than than I
- 33:07thought he was going to be. Like he's got more explosive
- 33:11runs and in that this season than I would have expected.
- 33:16He's not like the fastest guy. He's not like a true downhill
- 33:23like bruiser back either. He's he's a pretty balanced in
- 33:26that. We thought 1 he like coming into
- 33:30this season, I thought, OK, Dick, he's going to be like your
- 33:33your bruiser every downtime, like he's just going to take the
- 33:35take a beating kind of like what Taj Brooks was like Brooks was
- 33:40that definitely not a home run hitter.
- 33:42We saw like the times he got long carries.
- 33:45It's because it was absolutely schemed up perfectly against the
- 33:49defensive runner or blitz or whatever, blocked up just
- 33:52absolutely beautifully. Otherwise, it was 345 yards of
- 33:56pop and it was just like, I mean, guaranteed we thought kind
- 34:02of the similar vein, not as not as much of a sure thing with
- 34:06Dickie. He's showing a little bit more
- 34:07pop. What I think has been seen a lot
- 34:12of success besides the Arizona State game is that like
- 34:17typically whoever has the ball doesn't go down with the first
- 34:19guy. Arizona State was the first
- 34:22team, maybe Utah some to some extent.
- 34:27They were really good. They were really good tackling
- 34:29team. So our ball carriers were going
- 34:33down on first contact. They weren't breaking a lot of
- 34:36things. They weren't finding a lot of
- 34:37free space. I think of that comes with one.
- 34:41They were super amped up and they're also really discipline
- 34:43group. I I, I see a lot of that in
- 34:46Kansas State defenses that like they're not going to be out of
- 34:49position. They're not one.
- 34:51They're probably a little bit more more even keeled than what
- 34:53we saw from Arizona State, jumping around like they won a
- 34:57Super Bowl and every first down tackle, it was ridiculous.
- 35:01Props to them they were able to get up for it.
- 35:04It's just a lot of cope coming from me right now still trying
- 35:07to get over that loss. We shouldn't have lost passing
- 35:12game. Like it hasn't been a whole lot
- 35:14of running backs. We had that one long touchdown
- 35:17to Cameron Dickey in the Houston game, but that was like a hot
- 35:21read on a blitz coming up. The running back ran, I believe
- 35:26it's called a Texas route, that little angle route coming out of
- 35:29the backfield and then right back in the middle of the field
- 35:33against the man defense were everybody Houston was facing the
- 35:36other direction and Cam Dickey ran 70 yards untouched.
- 35:42Otherwise it's been like like they the running backs have run
- 35:45the ball, the receivers have have caught the ball.
- 35:48There hasn't been a lot of mixing and kind of cross
- 35:51pollination there. You mentioned Adam Hill.
- 35:55The goal is to not play Adam Hill, ultimately move him back
- 35:59to linebacker. I think that was the the plan
- 36:01when when when he was recruited, everybody fell in love with with
- 36:05what he was doing. The first couple weeks.
- 36:06I was like, let's, let's not, let's not be overly hyped here
- 36:10by the guy from this tiny Texas town, you know, putting up
- 36:15rushing yards against Arkansas Pine Bluff.
- 36:19But he's been he's been good at end of game situations when the
- 36:24game is out of hand. A guy that like is a headhunter
- 36:27will like absolutely want to hit somebody at the point in the
- 36:31game where nobody wants to make a tackle.
- 36:35The point is not to play Adam Hill.
- 36:37It's going to be Cam Dickey, Jacoby Williams.
- 36:39Williams is going to be more of the the change of pace like to
- 36:42to spell Dickey some I do love it when we get a more 2 back
- 36:49sets. We've been wanting that for
- 36:50years. There's a lot of flexibility in
- 36:54that with this with these guys. But it's been more, like I said,
- 37:04downhill running with Dickey, some explosive gadgetry type
- 37:08stuff with with Jacoby Williams. But even he he's shown some
- 37:10power and then, you know, when we put the ball in the air, it's
- 37:15not typically going to a running back.
- 37:17Oh, and, and you said something that I loved.
- 37:19Running backs run the ball, wide receivers catch the ball, keep
- 37:23them segregated for all I care. That's what I say.
- 37:26And so we're we're talking about those receivers right now
- 37:29because when I obviously when I think of Texas Tech's offense,
- 37:32I'm thinking of Smash Mouth football.
- 37:36Talk to me a little bit about these receivers.
- 37:37You talked about Terrence, Terrence Carter a little bit
- 37:41ago, but what about these receivers?
- 37:43Who am I supposed to be? Am I fearful?
- 37:46Are these big giant guys like JB Bradley that you used to have
- 37:50back in the day now that currently plays for K State?
- 37:53What am I looking for? Are they a little speedster out
- 37:55there or what? What are we looking at?
- 37:57Sure. No, we, we, we don't have any
- 38:00Giants on the roster anymore. I think that was more of a Matt
- 38:03Wells archetype. He was looking for the big tall
- 38:06outside receivers. So Caleb Douglas is going to be
- 38:11on on the right side. He's going to be well, they're
- 38:15all kind of your possession type of receivers.
- 38:18He's got some big playability in him.
- 38:21He can get behind guys. He's got great hands when he
- 38:27wants to, when he's focused. Like that's been one of the
- 38:29biggest knocks on him is like he he's shown some really like just
- 38:34unbelievable hands and, and makes just beautiful catches.
- 38:39And then sometimes he's got like a 10 yard out ball hits in the
- 38:43hands and just like there's no pressure on him and he drops it
- 38:46like what are you doing, man? And then that drive will stall
- 38:49and will punt or like, come on, man, like you, you got one job.
- 38:52This offense. Let's catch the ball thrown to
- 38:54you. Catch the ball.
- 38:56That's that's not entirely true. A lot of things I got going for
- 38:59him. On the opposite side, you get
- 39:00Reggie Virgil. He's a transfer in from Miami of
- 39:03Ohio. He was thought to be more of
- 39:05your big explosive play and he was early on this season.
- 39:09I don't know if there was some kind of injury that kind of
- 39:11slowed him down a little bit. He's been more, I wouldn't say
- 39:15short yardage like that. That's weird.
- 39:17But like he hasn't been explosive as he was.
- 39:21The thing you have to worry about when Virgil has the ball
- 39:23is he is slippery. He makes guys miss.
- 39:27You can get him bottled up and he somehow backs up and finds a
- 39:30way out of it. He wears #1 he'll be on the
- 39:34left. And then you've got Koi Aiken,
- 39:36who was an outside receiver last year.
- 39:38He's been moved back inside number three.
- 39:42More of your security blanket. He and Morton to play together
- 39:45for forever. Catches everything.
- 39:49He, he's tough. He's he's got good speed, he's
- 39:52got good hands. He's not going to burn you like
- 39:57off the line, but he finds himself open and then your
- 40:01receivers. Last year was John Carlos
- 40:04Miller. He wears #9 he's still on the
- 40:06team, but he, he took a a backup role to Terrence Carter.
- 40:11Terrence Carter just unbelievable.
- 40:13When he's in the game, he can do anything.
- 40:16But yeah, like big playability. Not because they're going to
- 40:22burn you and can get behind you and just hit you with a bunch of
- 40:24deep bombs. Also, it's not like like, you
- 40:28know, Crabtree where we scheme up all these inside screens and
- 40:32just break 1000 tackles on you or Torres from a few years ago,
- 40:38Alex Torres. So it's, it's, it's kind of a
- 40:43mixed bag. It's like I said, it's not like
- 40:44we've got the big tall, you know, 6, five guys in the
- 40:48outside. We don't have the, the 5-10 slot
- 40:52guys running, you know, 4340 or stuff like that.
- 40:56So it's it's it's mixed. All right, moving over to the
- 41:00defense. So for Texas Tech this year,
- 41:03obviously the offense has a lot of really bright spots, but some
- 41:07question marks at quarterback with the health of Bear Morton
- 41:10and everything. But for me, the real story this
- 41:12year has been Texas Tech's defense.
- 41:15And when you look at how they're ranked nationally, when you look
- 41:18at all the advanced stats, they are second nationally in
- 41:21defensive efficiency. They're first in the nation.
- 41:24Against the run, they're third. Against the past, they're 4th
- 41:28nationally in total points allowed, which I think you
- 41:31already mentioned Spencer, but 13.1 opponent points per game
- 41:35through eight games. On the K State side, you've got
- 41:38pretty lucrative quarterback and Avery Johnson, who's capable of
- 41:42big plays both passing and running the ball.
- 41:45But it can be feast or famine. We've mentioned that a few times
- 41:48on the rushing side and and K State in general only got 140
- 41:53rushing yards against Kansas last weekend against a rushing
- 41:56defense that going into that matchup, we thought we'd be able
- 41:59to to gash to, to be honest with you.
- 42:02And you know, that's that's not exactly KU's biggest strong suit
- 42:06is their rush defense. So you're you're going from one
- 42:09side of a coin to another with, with Texas Tech coming into town
- 42:13this weekend and K State in general and offense, they really
- 42:16thrive with explosive plays, being able to catch a guy like
- 42:20Jace Brown on that post router corner route and and he runs it
- 42:23in for a touchdown without really any kind of any kind of
- 42:26opposition from the defense. So what do you think from Texas
- 42:30Tech's perspective, just high level?
- 42:32What concerns you the most about K State's offense going up
- 42:36against Texas Tech's defense, if if anything?
- 42:39No, there there's certain aspects of of of any team that
- 42:43like can can scare me. As good as our defensive line
- 42:47has been, one we've been without Scott and Gil Howard now for a
- 42:50few weeks. He will be out until any kind of
- 42:52post season play. He was a good compliment to Lee
- 42:58Hunter on the inside. Lee Hunter is just an absolute
- 43:00beast, not show up on the stat sheet at all, but absolutely
- 43:05controls everything about what happens on the front side of of
- 43:08the tech Tech defense. What we've seen burn Texas Tech
- 43:14is you've got unbelievable pass rush and and Ramello height and
- 43:19David Bailey not very disciplined containment.
- 43:25So you've got guys we were really concerned about, Jalen
- 43:29Daniels and Connor Wegman, Dampier about being able to
- 43:35break contain. They did it some.
- 43:40That's always going to scare me as a tech tech defender.
- 43:42I've grown up watching tech tech defenses just get torched by my
- 43:46running quarterbacks. Even guys that I wouldn't say
- 43:49we're good running the ball have had fantastic days against
- 43:55texting defense. What they do upfront is just
- 44:01unbelievable. The defensive line yes, they're
- 44:04without Scott Scott and Go Howard, but the depth behind him
- 44:08with Big 12 starters being able to rotate in whether it's AJ
- 44:12Holmes who transferred from Houston with our our defensive
- 44:14coordinator or guys that started for Texas Tech last season and
- 44:17due to Banks or Jaden Cofield more than are capable of of
- 44:24playing in Skyler and Go Howard's absence.
- 44:27Lee Hunter is a man eater. He takes up so much space slower
- 44:32than Christmas, but it's huge and he plays bigger than he is.
- 44:38David Bailey and Ramela height. They are like it was one thing
- 44:44when Texas Tech got the commitment from Ramela height
- 44:46coming out of last. He's like we need a pass rusher.
- 44:48We got height 1st and we're like, holy crap, we're going to
- 44:52have a pass rush this year. We're so super excited.
- 44:54And then David Bailey fell into our laps and April were like,
- 44:58what are we supposed to do with two of these guys?
- 45:01What scares me is they get up, they get too far afield.
- 45:05There's they're blazing fast and and that they can put offensive
- 45:09lineman in a blender and have them looking silly.
- 45:13That doesn't always lead to pressure on the quarterback.
- 45:17Bad throws, sacks, we've seen they do that and they can be
- 45:21past them and like, well, you just took yourself out of the
- 45:23play. So being able to kind of reel
- 45:26that in and play with more discipline while they are just
- 45:30absolutely playing with their hair and fire, want to see that
- 45:32kind of reeled in to get great pressure, not just get up field
- 45:40when they do have a good pass rush.
- 45:43We've we forced quarterbacks to either take sacks or throw ill
- 45:47advised passes. When we break contain, obviously
- 45:51they're going to run on us or they're going to pick on our
- 45:53safeties. Colwis Neski, the transfer great
- 45:58as a converted safety linebacker.
- 46:00Guy had a bunch of picks a couple years ago.
- 46:04He hasn't really been the the the past defender we kind of
- 46:08expected coming in. Not that he's been bad, but it's
- 46:10been really BJ Jordan he's been picked on a bunch the corners
- 46:17they're really good. But if if there's you know, the
- 46:20call and defense and and they're you know that they pass up
- 46:23responsibility to to Jordan and something happens up front that
- 46:28allows Johnson an extra second to to look further down field.
- 46:33Yeah, I'm, I'm concerned about him finding, you know, your,
- 46:38your, your main guy back there one-on-one against Jordan or
- 46:41even Wisniewski because it, that I think is, is the biggest
- 46:46efficiency of this defense. Or, you know, if, if, if there's
- 46:50going to be a big passing day underneath, it's because you put
- 46:55the linebackers in conflict. Jacob Rodriguez is unbelievable
- 46:58linebacker. He's not good as a pass
- 47:00defender. Like, yes, he has a couple of
- 47:02interceptions, but that's not his game.
- 47:05His game is like, like playing with hair and fire, filling
- 47:09passing lanes to get the ball going somewhere else.
- 47:12And then absolutely coming downhill and punching the ball
- 47:17out. He's forced so many fumbles the
- 47:19past couple of years. It's not a surprise when you see
- 47:22him come in. He's got his arm cocked back.
- 47:23You know he's going to going to be punching at the ball.
- 47:26He's been really successful at it.
- 47:29And he had that that strip and score last week.
- 47:32Not the typical fumble that you see from Jacob Rodriguez.
- 47:34He just takes it from from the running back.
- 47:38But what? Like I said, what scares me is
- 47:41just like undisciplined pass rush that leads to a breakdown
- 47:46in the back end because our safeties, specifically BJ
- 47:50Jordan, aren't the best on an island.
- 47:55So you talked about Jacob Rodriguez and I, I feel like
- 47:58it's really important for our fans to understand how good
- 48:03Jacob Rodriguez has been this year at the linebacker position.
- 48:06Just a few, you know, I, I think really good stats, 69 tackles on
- 48:10the year. He's had five force fumbles, one
- 48:13of those brought back for a touchdown.
- 48:16He's first in the Big 12 and force fumbles, third in the Big
- 48:1912 in tackles. I mean he's a guy that when you
- 48:22watch a Texas Tech game, the broadcasters are specifically
- 48:27talking about Jacob Rodriguez. I mean as as as a leader to the
- 48:31defense. So they, I, I'm just curious,
- 48:34like from your perspective, you know, I, I don't know a lot
- 48:38about Jacob Rodriguez as AK State fan.
- 48:40I know what he does on the field.
- 48:42But you know, we see a lot of, of kind of showing his family
- 48:45and, and hearing a lot about how he's grown to, to his role.
- 48:49Can you give us a little bit of insight, you know, just as to
- 48:52kind of who he is, maybe not just as a player, but you know
- 48:55how he represents Texas Tech, you know, himself?
- 49:02Yeah, for sure. So he he started off kind of a
- 49:07small town out of the Metroplex there in Dallas area, actually
- 49:12went to Virginia to play with a quarterback out there, was kind
- 49:15of transitioning to playing linebacker, wanted to transfer
- 49:19back home a few few seasons ago. And we didn't like, honestly
- 49:24didn't think much of him as a linebacker prospect because what
- 49:27we had seen was like he was a converted quarterback, like, OK,
- 49:31whatever unbelievable development as a linebacker.
- 49:39He's he's stout and he's like 61240 can really move.
- 49:47He's a very sure tackler. Yes, he can hit really hard, but
- 49:50that's not like he's not typically going for the knockout
- 49:53blow. He is.
- 49:55He is the guy that's like the anchor of this defense.
- 49:57He like if he gets his arms on you, you're probably going down
- 50:01or he's going to hold you up long enough for somebody else to
- 50:03get there. He is as sure of a tackler as
- 50:06you could ever want from the middle linebacker of a defense.
- 50:12Unbelievable job at at causing turnovers.
- 50:17Yet like I said, he he has a couple of interceptions, but
- 50:20it's mainly because he goes and enforces fumbles.
- 50:24He did it. He did it a few times last
- 50:26season. Even better, this year doing it,
- 50:32he either led the country or was like very nearly leading the
- 50:35country in tackles last season. Actually took a step back in
- 50:39that kind of pace because I think the defensive front was
- 50:41kind of allowing not as many plays to get to him as it was
- 50:46last season. But defensive line was good
- 50:48enough last season. He was able to make a lot of
- 50:50plays. Yeah.
- 50:53I mean, if you've not watching Texas net game, you're going to
- 50:55get a lot of shots of his wife in the crowd.
- 50:57We absolutely love her. She's an Army helicopter pilot
- 51:01at West Point. Fantastic family.
- 51:04They're all great human beings. I've met him down to earth,
- 51:07dude, unbelievable. Like I said, person, incredible
- 51:12football player. But when he comes down, he like
- 51:16he's going to he's going to hit somebody, they're going to go
- 51:18down. He may might try to punch a ball
- 51:22out. He's just like I, I can't a few
- 51:28more about this man like he's, he's fantastic.
- 51:32If I were to point out something that like not many people would
- 51:36know because of how good Rodriguez is.
- 51:38We haven't talked about what the linebacker room looks like.
- 51:40It's Rodriguez. It's his guy that plays next to
- 51:43him, Ben Roberts, and that's it. There is no depth.
- 51:48We've had a converted linebacker that plays the hybrid safety
- 51:55linebacker position. John Curry.
- 51:57He was moved onto the field with injuries.
- 52:00But because like, like we couldn't keep him off the field.
- 52:06But you weren't going to be pulling off Ben Roberts or
- 52:09Rodriguez. So I, I hate to like point that
- 52:14out and like knock on wood for Texas Tech and there absolutely
- 52:18is no depth behind them, but Rodriguez has been just
- 52:21fantastic. So I think you went over the DBS
- 52:25really well. I, I, I want to go a little
- 52:27different way from the outline. I want to talk about your
- 52:31experience, your, your perspective on the team over
- 52:36this stretch of going against K State and specifically going to
- 52:40Manhattan. Does this, I mean, I know you
- 52:43had the the road trip to Utah. Does this pose a bigger threat
- 52:48to this team than that that game specifically with the dynamic of
- 52:54the team trying to break the the streak of Kansas State that that
- 52:59they have over Texas Tech. Can you, can you talk in depth
- 53:02of which does this game hold more importance than any other
- 53:06Rd. game that you've gone through this season?
- 53:11Yeah. So I would say it's got to be up
- 53:14there just because of the history.
- 53:20Tax tech is coming out of like a, a really bad stretch of bad
- 53:23teams. And even when we were like we
- 53:28were like in our, in our better years of not being good, it
- 53:32lined up with Kansas State being decent to great.
- 53:35So like, even when we were not as bad as we could have been, we
- 53:38went up against a, a, a pretty good Wildcat team.
- 53:43I think in terms of like the the impact of this game, the
- 53:46pressure on this game, it's got to be up there because one, the
- 53:51history obviously, like Tex neck is not done well in the past
- 53:54almost 20 years against Kansas State, Definitely not up in
- 54:00Manhattan. Is it the biggest test on the
- 54:07field? Probably not, but there's a lot
- 54:12to be said about facing a team that doesn't beat themselves.
- 54:15Yeah, I'm sorry. I've got both of my my younger
- 54:17kids not wanting to get in here and join this this preview show
- 54:21with us. It's always been a struggle for
- 54:26Texas Tech to go up against Kansas State because Kansas
- 54:30State has always been the more disciplined team.
- 54:32They've always been the team that will force more turnovers
- 54:36that then commit, will not commit any penalties, won't
- 54:40won't put themselves in bad spots.
- 54:42And Texas Tech is still struggle with that.
- 54:45Our our penalties per game are still way up there.
- 54:48They've gotten better the past few weeks, but that's been
- 54:50something that's really killed this team, especially
- 54:52offensively unforced errors, if you will.
- 54:56Want to take a little baseball analogy.
- 55:01Is it bigger than Utah? I hate to like sound pitching
- 55:06and and still from our defense according who says like every
- 55:09like the game this week is the most important game of the
- 55:11season with the way the schedule is playing out like every game
- 55:17like if you don't take your business this week, then doesn't
- 55:19matter. There's there's enough
- 55:23competition within the Big 12. If Tex Tech were to take a
- 55:26second loss in conference, it's over.
- 55:31I think there's, there's plenty of opportunity to, to rely on
- 55:36other people to help you out and to put you back into a position
- 55:39to be competitive for a position in the title game.
- 55:44But like, you really need to take care of your own business.
- 55:48And, you know, it starts with like not letting the game like
- 55:52it's, it's, it is one game, but it's not like you have to erase
- 55:5520 years of history to do it. All right, last position group
- 56:01or, or phase of the game, we're going to chat about special
- 56:03teams and, and we, we don't have to go too much into detail with
- 56:07this, but I was shocked to see that there are three guys who
- 56:10have registered an extra point or kick field goal kick on the
- 56:14season. You've got Stone Harrington,
- 56:17Upton, Bellinfonte and Ian Hershey, which for three
- 56:21kickers, that's that's like all timers for names.
- 56:23We got a guy named Stone, a guy whose last name is Hershey, and
- 56:26a guy named Upton. Harrington is 8 for 11 on field
- 56:30goals, 21 of 21 on extra points. Bell and Font is 6 for six on
- 56:35field goals before teen of 16 on extra points.
- 56:38So one of them is a little lacking in one area, one of them
- 56:40is a little lacking in the other.
- 56:42And I didn't really look at Eddie and Hershey, but what's
- 56:45been the battle? Like?
- 56:47What's been the battle for place kicker?
- 56:50What's that look like this year for Texas Tech?
- 56:52Because it's rare that you'll see multiple guys registering
- 56:55stats outside of injuries happening on at the place kicker
- 56:58position. Yeah, and this is the second
- 57:01year in a row that our our special teams guy has has rolled
- 57:04with multiple kickers. Last season was a was a
- 57:07competition. This year it was like he
- 57:08couldn't make up his mind. Instead, like he said, you know,
- 57:13through the end of fall camp, end of the week ones like, Hey,
- 57:15we're going to settle on a guy and and just move forward.
- 57:18And that's not been the case. Yes, Bellinfont was the one the
- 57:22transfer that came in from Buffalo expected to be like the
- 57:25the extra point kicker because he didn't have like a huge leg.
- 57:30Harrington was was more of like the leg, but it was most
- 57:34inconsistent in the fall in fall camp and practice everything
- 57:39like apparently Harrington like set aside all doubts like no,
- 57:43it's it's going to be Harrington's job to lose
- 57:46Bellinfonte missed an extra point this past weekend.
- 57:49Why we're so rotating, I have no idea.
- 57:52Harrington had that 58 yard or whatever it was in in in Salt
- 57:55Lake that like shocked Joel Klatt.
- 57:58He's got the bigger leg of the of the three, Hershey was
- 58:01brought in as like a an insurance policy transferring
- 58:04from Arizona State, actually kicked against Texas Tech last
- 58:07season for for the Sun Devils. I think he's also like the
- 58:13backup punter, which is why there's like some overlap there
- 58:16too. It's a strange dynamic to be
- 58:20rotating kickers without there being like an injury or a guy
- 58:25that's has a clear deficiency. You've kicked field goals within
- 58:31both of their ranges and they've they've alternated.
- 58:34You've had Harrington take short field goals you've had, but you
- 58:39haven't had Bellinfontaine longer ones.
- 58:43The impression is that like if it's going to come down to it,
- 58:46it's going to be a stone Harrington kick.
- 58:47He does all the kick offs. I think he's I don't think he's
- 58:52ever intentionally or not it. I think the only time the Tex
- 58:57Tech has seen a kickoff return allowed has been an intentional
- 59:01attempt to pin somebody deep. Why you play with that, I don't
- 59:05know. He's got the leg to put it into
- 59:07the stands every time. I just I just do it but don't
- 59:10even mess with it. Nextech is does not defend
- 59:14kickoffs or has not had to defend kickoffs because
- 59:16Harrington just boots it out of the stadium.
- 59:23Other guys like your your punters is is decently good.
- 59:26Hope help to see him. Very, very rarely, punt return
- 59:34has kind of been shaky. Like you wanted to have some
- 59:39other guys back there. It's kind of fallen to Koi
- 59:42Aiken, who's had a couple of surprisingly good returns, but
- 59:47then also like shown the ability to muff punts, which you
- 59:51absolutely hate to see. I like if anything, you want a
- 59:56returner back there to catch the ball every time and like I
- 59:58couldn't care less if you returned it a single yard 1.
- 1:00:04You have to catch the ball 2. I think your awareness of where
- 1:00:07you are, like inside the tin and like when you let a ball go over
- 1:00:11your head is the next most important thing.
- 1:00:13The ability to return it far distant.
- 1:00:16I couldn't care less about that, honestly.
- 1:00:20And then Jacob Jacoby Williams has rolled back into the kickoff
- 1:00:25return spot. Like I said, had a big one last
- 1:00:28week how he got under an Oklahoma State average guy and
- 1:00:33then shook him off. I don't understand it.
- 1:00:35He's he's not a big guy, but like he literally got under a
- 1:00:37guy and and and broke a tackle that way.
- 1:00:44Like I said, the kickers. I makes no sense why we rotate.
- 1:00:48It's not because one is is shaky or is going through any kind of
- 1:00:52like mental issues. My expectation is Stone
- 1:00:55Harrington should probably take every kick that that means
- 1:00:57anything. Why we rotate extra points, I
- 1:01:02have no idea. I we've asked the special teams
- 1:01:04coach Kenny Perry, he said he likes to have the competition
- 1:01:07ongoing. Needs to see everybody still
- 1:01:09being engaged and and and competing.
- 1:01:12It's week 10, man. Like we just need to move on.
- 1:01:14Like to pick one guy, let's go. And then your return team's
- 1:01:19coverage and return have been inconsistently good.
- 1:01:25Like good returns every now and then, but still shown the the
- 1:01:29capability to to muff easy ones. It's my turn.
- 1:01:37Sorry, I was trying to get off mute.
- 1:01:39All right, Well, I am curious just from your perspective and
- 1:01:43kind of, you know, all-encompassing this entire
- 1:01:46conversation, you know, thinking about some X factors for the
- 1:01:49game for Texas Tech. You know, is it is it the bye
- 1:01:52week that you think will have a huge role in in coming out
- 1:01:56strong? Is it, you know, seeing some of
- 1:01:59your key playmakers get a little bit more healthy?
- 1:02:02Is there a particular X Factor that, that you kind of, you
- 1:02:06know, think about from the Texas Tech perspective?
- 1:02:09And then I, I would also ask maybe from K State's
- 1:02:12perspective, you know, is there one item that you think of K
- 1:02:15State really takes advantage of? They could potentially upset
- 1:02:17Texas Tech this weekend. Yeah, so to me, it's got to be
- 1:02:23what does a recovering Baron Morton look like?
- 1:02:28How quickly can he readjust back into game speed, making the
- 1:02:34right reads, the right throws, being on time and putting the
- 1:02:38ball where it needs to be, not taking too many risks.
- 1:02:42Tex Tech has is plus and and the turnover margin, Kansas State is
- 1:02:46better in that aspect. You definitely don't want to
- 1:02:48give Kansas State any additional opportunities.
- 1:02:52We know because we know that like you guys don't turn the
- 1:02:54ball over very much. So we got we have to also take
- 1:02:56care of the ball ourselves, being disciplined on defense,
- 1:03:02not letting Avery beat us with with his feet.
- 1:03:05I think they're there enough things going on with the rest of
- 1:03:08the defense. Like if you sit back like you,
- 1:03:11you like your chances of having him try to beat you through the
- 1:03:15air with all the things like, so like, I think bringing Morton in
- 1:03:24and how, how he transitioned to, to, to coming back in into a
- 1:03:27full time starter role and how well we take care of the ball
- 1:03:31and then how disciplined we are on defense would be the three
- 1:03:34things I would look for if Tex Tech can probably, you know,
- 1:03:38have an advantage in at least two of those.
- 1:03:40I feel decently confident that Tex Tech's going to be in a
- 1:03:45position to win this game. I, I don't know if you want to
- 1:03:49get into predictions, but like, I don't think it's going to be
- 1:03:52more than a 7 point swing. I think like for Textek to win
- 1:03:57this game, we're going to have to be, like I said, be
- 1:03:59disciplined to take care of the ball.
- 1:04:01It's going to be close. I just think that like there's
- 1:04:07enough things that Textek went going right should should help
- 1:04:11push them over the edge in this one all.
- 1:04:15Right, let's get into the score prediction.
- 1:04:17What would be your final score prediction for this matchup?
- 1:04:20So I, I, I, I don't try to like do the mathematical of Tex Tech
- 1:04:26scores. They score 43 points on the
- 1:04:28year. Kansas State defense gives up.
- 1:04:31Where'd I have it? I just was looking at it 25I.
- 1:04:37I don't mess with that. I think offensively Tex Tech
- 1:04:42will probably close be closer to what Kansas State gives up.
- 1:04:44Defensively, you're probably mid to low 20s.
- 1:04:49I think regardless of who wins the game, unless there's like
- 1:04:53something wild that happens and you're missing key guys on
- 1:04:58either team. I think it's going to be like
- 1:05:01A27232420 type of game. Texan tech has given up 20
- 1:05:08points once. So I I, I like, I like where
- 1:05:12you're at there, but again, you're on the road.
- 1:05:15You still like I I would love to see and feel a lot more
- 1:05:18confident on how this team performs on the road than I
- 1:05:22currently do. I think the offense can be
- 1:05:27really good on the Morton. We just haven't seen it in a few
- 1:05:30weeks and and that hasn't been his performance on the field
- 1:05:33right It's been Hammond and all the other things around that.
- 1:05:39I like tech tech to win this one like 2723 type of game where
- 1:05:45it's in question wire to wire. I I hate those games.
- 1:05:51I honest like I, I, I don't like the anxiety of like being on the
- 1:05:57edge of your seat and it being in question the entire town.
- 1:05:59I I get it's supposed to get the games to be entertaining and fun
- 1:06:03and all that kind of stuff. I also hated last week when tech
- 1:06:08tech 142 to 0. So like, I, I, I, I guess you
- 1:06:12just really can't, I can't be happy or satisfied with with how
- 1:06:16this game is going to go. I think it's going to be close.
- 1:06:19I think Textech, if things go well, will win a close game.
- 1:06:24Can they do all those things to do it?
- 1:06:26I want to see it happen. I don't know why they play it,
- 1:06:29but like I think they can. I think they should.
- 1:06:31They just have to go do it. There you go.
- 1:06:35I'm, I'm going to go 28 to 20. Texas Tech in this one.
- 1:06:38But I think it's similar to you. I think it's going to be the
- 1:06:40kind of game where it's 21 to 20 and K State's got the ball with
- 1:06:46four minutes left and just doesn't convert.
- 1:06:47But Tech goes down and scores in the final, you know, 2-3 minutes
- 1:06:51of the game to take the win. And I think it's not going to be
- 1:06:55for any lack of of atmosphere. K State's going to be rocking I
- 1:06:58think in Manhattan. I think the bill's going to be
- 1:07:00rocking. I just think Tech has done
- 1:07:03enough this season to know how to win those close games and K
- 1:07:08State still in those one score games, has not come out on the
- 1:07:12other side of them as the winner.
- 1:07:14Generally over the last, you know, 15 or 16 times that we've
- 1:07:18had one score game. So I I think if it's a one score
- 1:07:21game in the final four minutes, Tech's going to get the win.
- 1:07:23They're going to win by 8 or 8 or 7 points.
- 1:07:28Not me. You want to go, Matt?
- 1:07:30You want to go, Matt? I'll go.
- 1:07:32I'll go and let Matt end this on a depression because I know he's
- 1:07:35going to pick Texas Tech. I'm going to go 2420 cats.
- 1:07:39I I feel confident. At the beginning of the season,
- 1:07:42I had my doubts on if anybody could beat Texas Tech.
- 1:07:47I did see them on the road lose to, you know, underperforming
- 1:07:54Arizona State team. In all honesty, I don't think
- 1:07:56they're the the greatest team in the Big 12 or anything.
- 1:07:59It made it made them human. I thought Texas Tech was going
- 1:08:03to route the entire Big 12. I saw that they were able to be
- 1:08:06beat. Oklahoma State proved nothing to
- 1:08:08me. And I think going into this game
- 1:08:11on the road, I think we are an ascending team.
- 1:08:16Everybody's a little bit banged up, but I think at the most
- 1:08:20pivotal positions, Kansas State is healthier.
- 1:08:24Can their defense travel to Manhattan?
- 1:08:27That's going to be seen. I think it's going to be a low
- 1:08:29scoring game. I think Vegas has that total way
- 1:08:32off. I think you hammer the under on
- 1:08:34that. So I'm going to go Cats 2420
- 1:08:37last second and not last second. But we are the last team to
- 1:08:42score and we come out of it with a victory.
- 1:08:45Yeah, that's fair. Like I, I, I, I think the the
- 1:08:48Arizona State game has poked a lot of holes and to like what
- 1:08:52Texas Tech was was presenting. I I hate to see that they're
- 1:08:57they're moving on and and playing games without Sam Levitt
- 1:09:01and Jordan Tyson's like, man, if you would just miss this game
- 1:09:04like you were supposed to, like we we would have we'd won this
- 1:09:06game. But yeah, I mean, I there's
- 1:09:09nothing to learn from the game against Oklahoma State.
- 1:09:11Like it, it, it is what it is and it it's not the same coming
- 1:09:16out after Arizona State and I, I get there lots of questions
- 1:09:19there for for Texas Tech. So I don't disagree with what
- 1:09:22you were saying it it's going to be close, I think.
- 1:09:25Yeah, Well, funny enough, I'm not actually going to be the the
- 1:09:31negative Nancy for this one. I I really like what I've seen
- 1:09:36from K State, not just the past couple weeks, but I mean, in the
- 1:09:40grand scheme of things, in the score game stretch where they've
- 1:09:42won three out of four, I do think this is going to be a low
- 1:09:45scoring game. I would agree with with all of
- 1:09:49you. I think K State's going to win
- 1:09:52this game 2117. I think it's going to be that
- 1:09:56that kind of low scoring game where you're going to see, you
- 1:10:00know, a Texas Tech offense try to get rolling, especially with
- 1:10:04Morton, who you know, is, you know, going to be coming in here
- 1:10:08a little bit banged up. I think you're going to see both
- 1:10:11defenses get into a groove. And you know, it's going to be a
- 1:10:15situation where you know, it is going to get into the fourth
- 1:10:17quarter and you haven't seen, you know, as many points being
- 1:10:21scored where you might get get a little bit more offense.
- 1:10:23But I, I, I somewhat believe in what I've seen from K state the
- 1:10:28past couple of weeks, specifically against, you know,
- 1:10:32going on the road and kind of killing that demon against KU.
- 1:10:35And, you know, I thought, you know, the TCU game was really
- 1:10:38overall all, all really good effort.
- 1:10:40So I, it's very shocking. I don't, I have not picked K
- 1:10:45state to win a game in, in weeks.
- 1:10:47I mean, I'm serious when I say that and I I just have a a
- 1:10:52strange feeling that that they're going to come up on top
- 1:10:56in this game. So I'm going to say 2117 low
- 1:10:59scoring game cats get done. All right, well, that's we got a
- 1:11:04split decision here, two of us taking Tech, two of us taking K
- 1:11:07State. But Spencer, thanks again for
- 1:11:09coming on and we appreciate having your your insight, having
