- 0:05Speaker 1: Yeah. So The Shrouds is playing right now at my local.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I believe it's cinemak. I think I've heard some good things.
- 0:16Speaker 2: It's one of those things where I just didn't really
- 0:18Speaker 2: feel like that they advertised that much.
- 0:21Speaker 1: To be honest, I didn't even know it was coming out.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It just like I think I saw. I think my
- 0:29Speaker 1: brother posted that he was seeing it, and I was like, oh,
- 0:31Speaker 1: that's out. So even Crime I remember doing Crimes in
- 0:35Speaker 1: the Future didn't even get that much attention when it
- 0:37Speaker 1: came out.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Well, that one, I felt like there was a little
- 0:40Speaker 2: bit more hype behind it.
- 0:41Speaker 3: This one.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I just remember seeing the announcement, the trailer and I
- 0:48Speaker 2: guess it's out.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I don't know it's I mean, it probably just didn't
- 0:53Speaker 1: have that marketing money behind it, you know what I mean.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I just don't know. I wonder.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I feel like for us, you know, I feel like,
- 1:02Speaker 2: if you're like really into horror like that, then you
- 1:04Speaker 2: have a greater appreciation for David Cronenberg. But for somebody
- 1:09Speaker 2: that's maybe like more of your casual viewer, is that
- 1:14Speaker 2: gonna be something that's really gonna get them in, you know,
- 1:17Speaker 2: the theater to go see that movie.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I feel like it's, you know, kind of a little
- 1:21Speaker 3: more of a niche thing.
- 1:23Speaker 1: No, I don't think. I don't think your normal theater
- 1:26Speaker 1: goer is gonna is gonna go see that. I mean, honestly, though,
- 1:32Speaker 1: you might have a little bit of that appeal, because
- 1:34Speaker 1: even the true it doesn't look like a Kronenberg movie.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Like the post, no, the poster, none of that stuff
- 1:40Speaker 1: is marketed like a Kronenberg movie. But Kronenberg I think.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I think Kronenberg kind of towes that line between sorry,
- 1:50Speaker 1: it's my dog. He toes that line between the horror
- 1:56Speaker 1: fans and the non horror fans very well.
- 2:00Speaker 2: You know, even a History of Violence or Eastern Promises.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I mean, those are pretty far out compared to the
- 2:07Speaker 2: rest of his filmography, and those are some of my
- 2:11Speaker 2: favorite movies that he's done, or at least up there
- 2:13Speaker 2: in his philmography.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, History of Violence is my favorite movie by him.
- 2:17Speaker 4: It's so good.
- 2:18Speaker 1: History of Violence is great. I think The Fly is
- 2:23Speaker 1: probably second. I don't you know. I like Eastern Promises.
- 2:27Speaker 1: It's not one that gets like frequent rewatches from me
- 2:31Speaker 1: very often. I mean, the audience is probably gonna hate this,
- 2:35Speaker 1: But I'm not a big fan of Crimes of the Future.
- 2:39Speaker 3: The most recent one.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I was fine with seeing it the one time
- 2:46Speaker 2: in theater. I don't know if it's something that I
- 2:48Speaker 2: feel like I really need to go out of my
- 2:49Speaker 2: way for. I can appreciate it for what it is,
- 2:51Speaker 2: but you know, if anything, I'd probably find myself going
- 2:55Speaker 2: back to some of his older films more frequently than not.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I always find myself like there are
- 3:02Speaker 1: certain movies that get into the popular zeit geist that
- 3:05Speaker 1: I I watch and I enjoy, but I never go
- 3:10Speaker 1: back to, like I might own it on physical So
- 3:13Speaker 1: like right off hand, I think of like Crimes of
- 3:14Speaker 1: the Future, Blade Runner twenty forty nine, even both Dune films,
- 3:18Speaker 1: like I'm great that first time. I think it's a
- 3:20Speaker 1: great experience, and then it just I never put it
- 3:23Speaker 1: on again.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you can have the appreciation for them
- 3:29Speaker 2: and not necessarily feel like the need to come back
- 3:32Speaker 2: and rewatch it, because I feel like it's like that
- 3:33Speaker 2: initial viewing is like a whole experience in itself.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:38Speaker 3: You know, you mentioned like Dune.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I mean you're going there and it's like you're invested
- 3:43Speaker 2: that entire runtime, you know, for both of those movies.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Same thing with Believe Ren or twenty forty nine. Any
- 3:50Speaker 2: of those films are like more on a grand scale
- 3:53Speaker 2: compared to I think more of your casual watches that
- 3:55Speaker 2: you would see.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Same though with Believe It or Not mids, Like, I
- 4:01Speaker 1: haven't watched mid Simar all the way through since I
- 4:03Speaker 1: first so I missed it on its initial theatrical run,
- 4:06Speaker 1: but I saw it when a re release it for
- 4:08Speaker 1: the director's cut, so I never I've never seen the
- 4:12Speaker 1: theatrical cut. I only saw the one hundred and seventy
- 4:14Speaker 1: one minute re release director's cut. That's what I have
- 4:18Speaker 1: from A twenty four. But even as much as I
- 4:21Speaker 1: love Hereditary, I think I've only gone back to Hereditary
- 4:25Speaker 1: once and I remember, like me, I mean the thing,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I love that movie, and I really loved it again
- 4:34Speaker 1: the second time, and I think I appreciated Tony Kolet's
- 4:36Speaker 1: performance a lot more on that second run, and I
- 4:39Speaker 1: was able to kind of like pay attention to some
- 4:41Speaker 1: things a lot better. I just don't. Maybe it's because
- 4:44Speaker 1: it's like it's such a heavy watch that I'm never like, oh,
- 4:50Speaker 1: let me throw on Hereditary on this beautiful Tuesday night.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah. No, that's that I have to be either of
- 4:59Speaker 3: those movies.
- 5:00Speaker 2: You have to be in the right mood to watch them.
- 5:05Speaker 2: But one that I haven't revisited since I saw it
- 5:08Speaker 2: in theaters was bo was afraid that was It was
- 5:13Speaker 2: cool for what it was. Maybe I was expecting something
- 5:15Speaker 2: a little bit different leading up to it, but it's
- 5:19Speaker 2: not one that I felt like I would return to
- 5:23Speaker 2: to be honest, or go out.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Of my way for.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Chuck, what were you going to say?
- 5:29Speaker 4: I was gonna just say I haven't seen either of
- 5:30Speaker 4: those movies.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I do. You definitely need to see them, I.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Mean, better add it to the watch list.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Oh it will. It's been on the watch list for
- 5:39Speaker 4: a while. But I'm still working on my backlog, starting
- 5:42Speaker 4: all the way back from you know, seventies and eighties.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Still still got a lot of modern stuff to watch.
- 5:48Speaker 1: He's in season thirty five of Beyond the Blood.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Watch finally watched Hereditary. All right, guys, So for this
- 5:55Speaker 4: episode of After Hours, I finally watched.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Her way six minutes in Welcome everyone to episode two
- 6:03Speaker 1: of After Hours. I know I said it in the intro,
- 6:06Speaker 1: but this is our kind of casual, uh kind of
- 6:09Speaker 1: hangout time this is we don't have a movie in
- 6:11Speaker 1: particular that we're talking about in this We just kind
- 6:15Speaker 1: of hang out and bullshit and we're gonna be talking
- 6:16Speaker 1: about a couple of titles that we've picked up on
- 6:18Speaker 1: physical media and watched. And Yeah, there's so little stress
- 6:24Speaker 1: with these episodes. You know, it just like feels. I mean,
- 6:28Speaker 1: right now, it's pouring down right outside. It's a terrible storm.
- 6:31Speaker 1: So we're just sitting around the fire, you know, bullshitting
- 6:34Speaker 1: right now, but trying to trying to trying to set
- 6:38Speaker 1: the move.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Yeah, this is always fun because I feel like we
- 6:42Speaker 2: can be a little bit more casual about stuff, not
- 6:46Speaker 2: as in depth. We can just kind of have casual conversation,
- 6:50Speaker 2: catch up on some movies that we've watched recently, and
- 6:53Speaker 2: you know, kind of bound them off each other.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I do want to I do want to say for
- 6:58Speaker 1: kind of like an insight that people listening to, kind
- 7:00Speaker 1: of an insight to the podcasting world. One thing that
- 7:05Speaker 1: I'm most proud of with this show is obviously like
- 7:10Speaker 1: the more we do it, the more comfortable we get.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And on our latest episode with pet Cemetery two, I
- 7:16Speaker 1: didn't feel an ounce of stress or like anxiety going
- 7:21Speaker 1: into that episode, and I feel like you can hear
- 7:23Speaker 1: that from all of us, you know. I feel like
- 7:26Speaker 1: we've gotten to the point where we're comfortable and we
- 7:30Speaker 1: just sit down and make make a great episode. I
- 7:33Speaker 1: was super proud of that episode.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Yeah, it came out really good. So just like you's,
- 7:39Speaker 4: like you said, I was proud of it as well.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Definitely coming out of our shelves a little bit more
- 7:42Speaker 4: and being a little more relaxed on microphone.
- 7:47Speaker 3: It was a really fun episode.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that was so much fun, and then you know,
- 7:51Speaker 1: we're getting ready. I just watched It's not part of
- 7:53Speaker 1: this list, but I watched last night. I showed my
- 7:56Speaker 1: wife the burning on four K which Steve it looked
- 7:59Speaker 1: fantastic onour I'm very happy I upgraded that.
- 8:02Speaker 2: You're inspired me to go back and watch it in preparation.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Mark watched it. Mark is our guest who's gonna
- 8:10Speaker 1: be on the episode Tales from the Shelf. He said
- 8:12Speaker 1: the commentary was from the original Blu Ray release of
- 8:15Speaker 1: two thousand and nine ish they had mentioned, and he
- 8:18Speaker 1: said it was really informative. He said he thinks we're
- 8:21Speaker 1: gonna have a lot of good a lot of good
- 8:23Speaker 1: bits from that, so I was happy to.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Hear that perfect perfect for the summer coming up. That
- 8:32Speaker 3: to a t.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yeah it does. And then of course the next month
- 8:37Speaker 1: we're gonna be doing pretty much like the evolution of
- 8:39Speaker 1: the Campground Slasher. We're gonna be doing this whole hangout
- 8:43Speaker 1: with Christian from playing the h hur Friend. We're gonna
- 8:45Speaker 1: be hanging out with him talking about slasher movies. And
- 8:49Speaker 1: then if you're listening to this today, which would be
- 8:53Speaker 1: this is so well, technically the day before tomorrow, Thursday,
- 8:57Speaker 1: we're only a couple of days away from Steve your
- 8:59Speaker 1: birthday bash episode where we're gonna have a bunch more
- 9:03Speaker 1: guests than have ever been on a single episode of
- 9:07Speaker 1: Beyond the Blood, and you don't even know who most of.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Them are, don't This is like a mystery episode.
- 9:13Speaker 1: It's gonna be fun. We're gonna be talking about whatever
- 9:16Speaker 1: Steve wants to talk about, which is I think gonna
- 9:19Speaker 1: be Italian Hawk.
- 9:20Speaker 3: And Jallo Gore, black gloves, all.
- 9:24Speaker 5: That shadows, wide shots, red herrings, red herrings, lots that
- 9:34Speaker 5: don't make sense, Yeah, yeah, lots, yeah that don't make
- 9:37Speaker 5: sense or go anywhere.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Yep, yep, very accurate. Yeah, it's been a cool you know,
- 9:42Speaker 1: we did this episode a month ago. We did the
- 9:44Speaker 1: first episode a month ago. Massive, like big releases that
- 9:50Speaker 1: I feel like we pre ordered months ago have showed up.
- 9:54Speaker 1: There are big things coming out that we probably like,
- 9:59Speaker 1: We haven't talked about it on the show, but in
- 10:00Speaker 1: the physical media community have finally arrived. Grindhouse releasing their
- 10:06Speaker 1: release of The Beyond has finally started landing for people.
- 10:09Speaker 1: The deluxe four K release of that, which was highly
- 10:12Speaker 1: anticipated teas for years by Grindhouse. That's an understatement, Yeah,
- 10:19Speaker 1: I mean like teas forever, so that finally came out.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Ignite Films there were their four K release of Reanimator,
- 10:27Speaker 1: which has been very looked forward to, has finally started landing.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Big stuff coming out, man, I know, I just got
- 10:36Speaker 1: my copies of Jason X and Jason Goes to Hell
- 10:39Speaker 1: on four K from Aero Video, which that felt like
- 10:43Speaker 1: I feel like I got Friday the thirteenth nine on
- 10:46Speaker 1: four K and then I blinked and these were here.
- 10:49Speaker 1: You know, it felt very quick.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Can I just say the pictures I've seen of them,
- 10:54Speaker 2: all three of them together, there's something so satisfying about
- 10:57Speaker 2: all three of those covers.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Yeah, the work on those are awesome.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm hoping for Here's like my kind
- 11:06Speaker 1: of wish Obviously, I want Freddy versus Jason. I think
- 11:09Speaker 1: if Erra's gonna do that, it's gonna be an October thing,
- 11:11Speaker 1: so they're probably not even teasing that yet. I want
- 11:16Speaker 1: them to do textas chance to ask for three.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Oh please please give me that.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Whole run, Like, give me that weird prequel sequel run
- 11:25Speaker 1: of three The Beginning and Texas Chancell three D. I'm
- 11:30Speaker 1: not really concerned with more so remake O three and
- 11:34Speaker 1: The Beginning are like my wish list.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I would back that up.
- 11:41Speaker 2: That's I feel like that those early two thousand horror
- 11:45Speaker 2: titles are just so needed, especially right now.
- 11:51Speaker 3: You know, if we could get that cap'n Fever Hostile
- 11:56Speaker 3: one and two.
- 11:57Speaker 1: That's coming probably know, I just I need more? Yeah yeah, Chuck,
- 12:04Speaker 1: What about you?
- 12:05Speaker 4: Man?
- 12:05Speaker 1: If Arrow could put out anything that they haven't already,
- 12:08Speaker 1: Let's let's take anything that that has not had a
- 12:11Speaker 1: physical upgrade like a four K release. What what would
- 12:16Speaker 1: you want it to be in? Like a nice treatment
- 12:17Speaker 1: from Arrow.
- 12:19Speaker 4: That's a tough one. Kind of throw me on the
- 12:21Speaker 4: spot there. Now I'm trying to think back to like,
- 12:24Speaker 4: you know, ship, I really I can't think of anything
- 12:29Speaker 4: right now.
- 12:31Speaker 1: For some reason. When I said that, I was like,
- 12:33Speaker 1: I was like, please don't say like prom night remember
- 12:36Speaker 1: the what was that? Six? Did they do that? That nine?
- 12:39Speaker 1: The problem? But Brittany Snow right, I think that was Brittany.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Snow Yeah, I don't think I've seen that.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Yeah, that was Brittany Snow.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Yeah, she was in that.
- 12:53Speaker 1: You know what I would actually like to get tell
- 12:54Speaker 1: me if you guys know this one, mister Brooks, I
- 13:00Speaker 1: ever seen it with Kevin Costner?
- 13:01Speaker 3: Mm hmmm, I know what you're talking about, but I
- 13:04Speaker 3: don't think I've ever seen that.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Yeah, he plays a sadistic serial killer and very good.
- 13:10Speaker 1: There's a good supporting role in there from somebody that
- 13:17Speaker 1: I'm stuck on right now that I'm going to go
- 13:20Speaker 1: on here and look up real mister Brooks. It's a
- 13:23Speaker 1: It's a very unconventional role for Costner. He does a
- 13:25Speaker 1: good job in it. Oh, Demi Moore is in it,
- 13:30Speaker 1: and uh yeah, William Hurt and Dane Cook That's what
- 13:33Speaker 1: I was thinking about. Okay, Yeah, Dane Cook is in
- 13:35Speaker 1: it as well, very good psychological serial killer film. It's
- 13:40Speaker 1: a little long. I think it was trying to be
- 13:41Speaker 1: a little bit more prestige. This was two thousand and seven.
- 13:45Speaker 1: It was trying to do the like, you know, the
- 13:49Speaker 1: the higher class, like, oh, let's make a prestigious slasher
- 13:52Speaker 1: that still has all slasher elements. But that's one that
- 13:57Speaker 1: I would like to get a good a good release.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Four Yeah, I don't know. I mean give that whole
- 14:05Speaker 1: catalog to Arrow, like anything from that. Like I would
- 14:11Speaker 1: have loved a House of Wax. I know we got
- 14:13Speaker 1: it from Screen Factory, but I would have loved that.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I would have loved House on Haunted Hill the way
- 14:19Speaker 1: of Malone film. I would have loved thirteen Ghosts.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Oh, I didn't not think of that. That's one of
- 14:25Speaker 4: my favorite, like early two thousands movies.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Yeah, four K be hard.
- 14:32Speaker 2: If you're talking Arrow, I would love I know it's
- 14:35Speaker 2: not of the same decade, but I would love to
- 14:38Speaker 2: see a bay of blood since they already did blood
- 14:41Speaker 2: and black lace on four K.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, did correct me if I'm wrong? Did they
- 14:46Speaker 1: have blood? Get an original Arrow? Remember when it used
- 14:49Speaker 1: to do like the window slips? Did they do that?
- 14:53Speaker 3: Hold on.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Because I feel like, I know they did a couple
- 14:58Speaker 1: Daria or Jetto films like that, they did City of
- 15:00Speaker 1: the Dead like that, I know they did Zombie. I
- 15:06Speaker 1: think that way as well, which makes sense because now
- 15:08Speaker 1: we're getting Zombie on on four K from Arrow.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Just to order that. I'm excited for it.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm very happy that they went with the Zombie
- 15:19Speaker 1: flesh Eaters title on the on the on the box.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I can't wait for that.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Yeah, very happy about that.
- 15:27Speaker 3: So what about Manhunter?
- 15:30Speaker 1: That one needs? Uh? We need an update? I've actually
- 15:33Speaker 1: never seen Manhunter though.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Man, that's Michael Mann right, add that cheerless?
- 15:40Speaker 1: I have to, I think because I wanted to watch
- 15:42Speaker 1: it on physical and I can never get my hands
- 15:44Speaker 1: on that screen factory one.
- 15:46Speaker 3: It goes for crazy money, now, doesn't it.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like stupid out of print.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah those any any more Mario Baba titles I would
- 15:56Speaker 2: fully embrace if Arrow is choosing to put those out
- 15:59Speaker 2: and then and if it's something like unrelated to that,
- 16:02Speaker 2: then Manhunter would be like the top of my list,
- 16:05Speaker 2: whether it's Arrow, because I know that they would do
- 16:06Speaker 2: such a nice job with it or any other boutique label.
- 16:10Speaker 1: But it's hard to know. Man rights are all over
- 16:13Speaker 1: the place all the time. Something looked out from Screen
- 16:15Speaker 1: Factory and then you know, before you know it, the
- 16:18Speaker 1: four K is coming out from Arrow, and then it's
- 16:19Speaker 1: coming out from this company. It's kind of like, I know,
- 16:23Speaker 1: you know, Ignite Films is a great company. They did
- 16:26Speaker 1: Invaders from Mars, they did The True Story of G I. Joe.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Those were their first two releases as a label. But
- 16:33Speaker 1: then when they announced reanim re Animator, I was like,
- 16:35Speaker 1: holy hell, like talk about the grab of the decade,
- 16:40Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Like, yeah, like, because I'm
- 16:44Speaker 1: sure most companies were were trying to get their hands
- 16:49Speaker 1: on that they knew would be huge. The Arrow the
- 16:51Speaker 1: Deluxe edition was long out of print. Uh you know,
- 16:56Speaker 1: you had the standard the standard era, but the standard
- 16:59Speaker 1: Errow release didn't not contained the integral version, which only
- 17:03Speaker 1: came with the Docs edition and is now on this
- 17:05Speaker 1: four K release, So people wanted that, you know what
- 17:09Speaker 1: I mean?
- 17:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that's you know.
- 17:13Speaker 2: What it reminds me of is when Vinegar Syndrome got
- 17:16Speaker 2: Texas Chainsaw Massacre two and just how big of a
- 17:21Speaker 2: win that was for them at the time. This kind
- 17:23Speaker 2: of I feel like that they kind of like mirrors
- 17:25Speaker 2: that situation a little bit per Ignite, So good for them.
- 17:28Speaker 3: That's that's a big get.
- 17:30Speaker 1: And you know we when I think of Vinegar Syndrome,
- 17:33Speaker 1: I know them as they've always been the same size
- 17:38Speaker 1: label to me. Like when they announced Texas Chains Some
- 17:41Speaker 1: Mascar Too, I was shocked at the size of the title,
- 17:43Speaker 1: but I also wasn't being a Vinegar Syndrome fan. I
- 17:47Speaker 1: feel like Texas Change Some Oscar two brought in a
- 17:49Speaker 1: whole new era of fans for them. Mm hm, you
- 17:54Speaker 1: know what I mean, because people just wanted that and
- 17:55Speaker 1: that release, Like I ordered it day one. Big fan
- 17:59Speaker 1: of sex change to mask or two, So I ordered
- 18:02Speaker 1: it day one and I remember how quickly that went,
- 18:04Speaker 1: like out of print. That was so fast.
- 18:08Speaker 3: I was so glad that I got.
- 18:10Speaker 2: I snagged a copy of that great as soon as
- 18:13Speaker 2: that was getting released, I was like, there's no way
- 18:14Speaker 2: I'm passing this up.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Yeah, And it looked great, man, like the documentary that
- 18:19Speaker 1: was on it.
- 18:19Speaker 3: There was so much good.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Stuff on that.
- 18:22Speaker 2: So I have to ask you, guys, with Ignite getting Reanimator,
- 18:25Speaker 2: do you think that there's any likelihood that they get
- 18:28Speaker 2: brid of Reanimator at some point.
- 18:30Speaker 4: I hope so, because I would like to add that
- 18:32Speaker 4: to my collection same.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I would pretty much guarantee it.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, would be so cool.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think anybody's pining for a.
- 18:43Speaker 4: For a.
- 18:45Speaker 1: A beyond Reanimator upgrade.
- 18:48Speaker 3: But no, no, no, I'm okay if you are.
- 18:52Speaker 1: I mean, come on, dude, you can't. I mean, both
- 18:54Speaker 1: of them, both Reanimator and brought a Reanimator, They're they're first.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I would I would bet pretty confidently that Ignite Films
- 19:03Speaker 1: has Bridery Animator. I would say, good bet.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Well if that's the case, I mean, that's like a
- 19:10Speaker 2: one two punch with the titles that you could pick up.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure. So, in tradition of
- 19:19Speaker 1: the after Hour show, each of us are going to
- 19:22Speaker 1: be talking about three titles that we picked up this
- 19:27Speaker 1: it doesn't have to be from this month, but three
- 19:30Speaker 1: recent things that we've picked up that we've watched on
- 19:32Speaker 1: physical media of course, we want to support physical media.
- 19:36Speaker 1: And then we actually have a bonus one that we're
- 19:39Speaker 1: gonna be talking about all three of us together, we're
- 19:42Speaker 1: gonna save until the end. But who wants to uh,
- 19:46Speaker 1: who wants to kick us off.
- 19:48Speaker 4: Sure, I'll go firstly for you guys.
- 19:50Speaker 1: One, he's gonna talk about the one movie no I've
- 19:53Speaker 1: never seen, not to kick on.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Yes, So my first pick is going to be Pulse
- 19:59Speaker 4: from two thousand and one, directed by Kiyoshi Kirosawa. Sorry
- 20:03Speaker 4: if I butchered that. Yeah, that movie's a very unsettling,
- 20:11Speaker 4: very dark topics with you know, depression, loneliness, suicide. Very
- 20:19Speaker 4: famous for one scene. I'm sure I know Christ you
- 20:21Speaker 4: said you didn't see it, but there's one scene you
- 20:23Speaker 4: may have seen, maybe you scrolling through Instagram of the
- 20:27Speaker 4: ghost lady like contorting her body as she's like slowly
- 20:30Speaker 4: walking down this hallway towards a guy.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Yes, I think that was in the top I think
- 20:36Speaker 1: like twelve years ago, that was in like the top
- 20:38Speaker 1: one hundred scariest movie moments on A and E.
- 20:41Speaker 4: I think, yeah, I believe.
- 20:42Speaker 3: So that's so creepy.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Yeah, dude, chills. The first time I actually like watched
- 20:46Speaker 4: it because I didn't realize it was from this movie.
- 20:48Speaker 4: But I've seen that clip so many times. But when
- 20:50Speaker 4: it popped up, like seeing it ough goosebumps.
- 20:56Speaker 1: What what release did you get? Was that Umbrella.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Oh it was the Umbrella least that just came out.
- 21:01Speaker 4: I think was it the end of last year beginning
- 21:03Speaker 4: of this year?
- 21:05Speaker 1: Them, it's hard to tell.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Did you get the box set?
- 21:07Speaker 4: Yeah? The box set? I'm so mad I book you
- 21:12Speaker 4: didn't get it.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Now I know it's okay.
- 21:14Speaker 2: I'm sure after hearing how great the releases, it'll inspire
- 21:19Speaker 2: me to get it.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I believe. Was that the same director that did Ring You.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Question different he did Cure?
- 21:30Speaker 1: Oh? Oh that's the director of Yeah, because I've been
- 21:35Speaker 1: wanting to pick up Cure. I never knew what Cure was.
- 21:37Speaker 1: I I had the Criterion in my hands so many times,
- 21:41Speaker 1: but I just never picked it up. And then I
- 21:42Speaker 1: was I was watching somebody talking about it and they
- 21:47Speaker 1: were pretty much like was Elliott on Elliott Cohen on YouTube.
- 21:53Speaker 1: It was one of my favorite guys to watch on there.
- 21:54Speaker 1: And he was talking about because I think Eureka put
- 21:57Speaker 1: out Cure on four k yep, and he was talking
- 22:00Speaker 1: about how great that movie was.
- 22:02Speaker 3: It's like, I'd probably put that up there like the
- 22:05Speaker 3: top ten.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Okay, so he did Cure before he did Pulse.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, Cure. I can't recommend that movie. Enough. It
- 22:16Speaker 3: is really good too. They're both really really good movies.
- 22:20Speaker 1: What did you guys think? Do you guys have any
- 22:21Speaker 1: memory of the Pulse remake?
- 22:24Speaker 4: Never seen it?
- 22:25Speaker 3: I haven't either.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I think I have. I think I I think I have.
- 22:32Speaker 1: I just remember the cover, the DVD cover, and I
- 22:35Speaker 1: think there was Dimension that put that out. I think
- 22:39Speaker 1: I remember seeing the Dimension logo in the corner of it.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Wes Craven wrote the screenplay for it.
- 22:47Speaker 4: For the remake.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, okay, all right.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Have you had a chance to read into that, like
- 22:54Speaker 1: that booklet or any of.
- 22:55Speaker 4: The extras in that Unfortunately not yet, but I will
- 22:59Speaker 4: be getting around to it.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You knew I was at the booklet.
- 23:02Speaker 4: I knew it. I'm letting you down, Chris. I'm sorry.
- 23:06Speaker 1: The Internet. The Internet commented on one of my reels
- 23:09Speaker 1: and called me the bearded booklet guy.
- 23:13Speaker 4: I did see. That made me laugh at laugh.
- 23:17Speaker 3: I'm telling you, Chris, it's going sick, the bearded booklet guy. Yeah.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Well, then I made a then like a day later,
- 23:23Speaker 1: I made a whole video about two booklets because I
- 23:25Speaker 1: read the booklet. It's not a booklet, it's a fucking book.
- 23:29Speaker 1: But I read the book that came with the second
- 23:31Speaker 1: Sight on the Dead and the second site Blair Witch Project.
- 23:35Speaker 1: So I was talking about those on my Instagram and
- 23:36Speaker 1: I was like, I was like, thanks to the comments
- 23:39Speaker 1: section for the Bearded booklet, guy post nice pickup. I
- 23:45Speaker 1: need to check that out.
- 23:46Speaker 4: I need to get definitely recommend it. Well, make sure
- 23:49Speaker 4: you're in a good mood going into it.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Was Was it what you were expecting?
- 23:56Speaker 1: It was not.
- 23:57Speaker 4: I really didn't look into what the movie was about
- 24:00Speaker 4: before I bought it. Kind of was just like a
- 24:01Speaker 4: blind buy for me, and I couldn't turn it down
- 24:04Speaker 4: because you know, the box I just looked gorgeous, and
- 24:08Speaker 4: you know, I was at the time, I was getting
- 24:10Speaker 4: quite a few other Japanese horror titles, so I was like,
- 24:13Speaker 4: why not get Pulse and what.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Else did you get around that time?
- 24:18Speaker 4: Around that time, I think I got the j Horrorrizon
- 24:20Speaker 4: box set that Arrow put out, as well as Audition,
- 24:24Speaker 4: and I think it's called Dark Waters, which was another
- 24:27Speaker 4: release that Arrow did.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I remember that. Yeah, another ghost Story.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Yeah. So I got those and picked up Pulse all
- 24:34Speaker 4: in the same month. But yeah, dude, I really enjoyed it.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Damn Chuck crazy, yeah, crazy story about like spirits basically
- 24:44Speaker 4: cursing people through the Internet, and you know, and this
- 24:48Speaker 4: is when the Internet was starting to get big, you know,
- 24:50Speaker 4: like two thousand and one. So it was a nice,
- 24:53Speaker 4: nice little time capsule piece. In my opinion, I think the.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Poster for the remake of Poles had cell phone if
- 25:00Speaker 1: I remember correctly, The main poster was like a cell
- 25:04Speaker 1: phone with a hand I don't know, I had something
- 25:06Speaker 1: to do with a like it was like an old Nokia. Yeah,
- 25:11Speaker 1: something like that. Dude, nice nice get man.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Highly recommended to check it out.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Nice get Steve, what do you what do you? I
- 25:21Speaker 1: know you did not tell us what your three were
- 25:23Speaker 1: gonna be beforehand.
- 25:24Speaker 3: So so I'll start off. I picked up.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Sorority House Massacre, so the four K released from screen Pactory,
- 25:37Speaker 2: directed by Carol Frank So she was actually assistant to
- 25:41Speaker 2: Amy Holden Jones. I'm Slumber Primee Massacre, and I feel
- 25:46Speaker 2: like that these these films, like these film series kind
- 25:49Speaker 2: of have kind of similar vibe between that and Sorority House,
- 25:54Speaker 2: I mean sorty House Massacre and slumber Pride Massacre.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I also think of like House on Sorority Row.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yep, yep, So all roughly around the same time. But
- 26:04Speaker 2: I felt like this this movie, I hadn't seen it
- 26:06Speaker 2: in a really long time, but four K transfer was excellent.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Felt like it brought up elements of like psychological horror
- 26:17Speaker 2: that was infused with like trauma. And what I thought
- 26:20Speaker 2: was interesting about it is it's from the female perspective,
- 26:24Speaker 2: So at the time, I felt like you didn't really
- 26:27Speaker 2: see that as often, like you know, that was that
- 26:30Speaker 2: was becoming more prominent, I felt like in slashing movies
- 26:33Speaker 2: at the time. But overall, it's just just a really
- 26:37Speaker 2: great watch. Like I just I was having a blast
- 26:40Speaker 2: watching it and seeing it in this format.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Who that was? Screen factory?
- 26:45Speaker 3: Put that out screen factory yep.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Okay, okay, any good like bonus features anything in there.
- 26:51Speaker 3: I didn't have as much time to dive into that
- 26:54Speaker 3: just kind of was just trying to be like like
- 26:58Speaker 3: try to do as much as.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Of a deep dive as far as like on the film.
- 27:02Speaker 2: And yeah, just I felt like what stood out about
- 27:05Speaker 2: it at least like me, you know, doing a little
- 27:07Speaker 2: bit more research on it was obviously directed by like
- 27:11Speaker 2: a female director, which is awesome.
- 27:15Speaker 3: A lot of focus on the psychological.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Aspect, And it's really cool because throughout this film it
- 27:22Speaker 2: has like a very dreamlike atmosphere to it, even with
- 27:25Speaker 2: it being low budget, they really capture that aesthetic throughout
- 27:28Speaker 2: the entire film. So dealing with like a lot of
- 27:33Speaker 2: like you know, for the female protagonists, a lot of
- 27:37Speaker 2: repressed trauma and memories. It's just a reoccurring theme throughout
- 27:41Speaker 2: the entire film.
- 27:43Speaker 3: So if you if you.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Guys like those like low budget slashers, this one it's
- 27:46Speaker 2: definitely worth checking out for sure.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Yeah, that's one I never that's one I've never seen before,
- 27:52Speaker 1: but I saw that announcement and yeah, that's one. I
- 27:56Speaker 1: feel like I remember that poster the siloett through the Blinds.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I feel like I remember that.
- 28:04Speaker 3: It feels like a riff body double the movie poster
- 28:08Speaker 3: for that film.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Oh you're right, Yeah, Yeah, you're right, you're right. Yeah.
- 28:14Speaker 1: That's a good one, man. And that was one that
- 28:16Speaker 1: did that have did screen for Factory put that out previously.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I'm blu ray yep, Okay, they did. Okay, so it
- 28:23Speaker 1: was one of their upgrades. Okay, okay, sweeze.
- 28:27Speaker 2: I'm hoping in the future that they end up doing
- 28:30Speaker 2: Sorority House Massacre two and what was the Hard to
- 28:36Speaker 2: Die was the other one?
- 28:37Speaker 1: I do even know that was a trilogy.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Yep, damn.
- 28:42Speaker 1: That's like I remember learning that there was like nine
- 28:44Speaker 1: Howling movies and I was like, what the hell?
- 28:47Speaker 3: Oh we could we could save a whole episode for that.
- 28:52Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Well, my first pick is one that I feel like
- 28:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna be pretty alone on. So we're talking about
- 29:01Speaker 1: nineteen seventies, She Killed in Ecstasy. This was put out
- 29:05Speaker 1: by Severin. It's an older Severn Blu ray, but this
- 29:08Speaker 1: was directed by Jess Franco. If you know of Jess Franco,
- 29:12Speaker 1: then you know kind of what I'm getting into with
- 29:15Speaker 1: this one. But I feel like, in a way with
- 29:19Speaker 1: this one, I'm not going to teut myself as a
- 29:22Speaker 1: Jess Franco expert. I've seen a lot of his movies
- 29:25Speaker 1: and he's a director that I greatly appreciate, but I
- 29:30Speaker 1: rarely say, like, I rarely kind of consider his movies good. This,
- 29:37Speaker 1: in my journey of his filmography, is one that I
- 29:40Speaker 1: actually say is a great movie because Jess Franco is
- 29:46Speaker 1: very excessive, and a lot of these excesses here are
- 29:49Speaker 1: pulled back in some weird way, and I think it's
- 29:53Speaker 1: because behind the camera he was working with a lot
- 29:56Speaker 1: more talent, so this was early seventies for him. He
- 29:59Speaker 1: actually shot this pretty much back to back with Vampire's Lesbos,
- 30:03Speaker 1: which is his most notorious film. Actually, the Criterion cover
- 30:08Speaker 1: for A Nora is an exact kind of replica of
- 30:15Speaker 1: one of the posters for Vampire's Lesbos. Sean Baker is
- 30:18Speaker 1: a huge Jeff Franco fan, so I would say, yeah,
- 30:23Speaker 1: that's like one of his biggest cult titles. But she
- 30:27Speaker 1: called an Ecstasy is really cool. So it tells the
- 30:30Speaker 1: story of a woman. Her name is we just know
- 30:34Speaker 1: her as Missus Johnson. She gets married to this doctor
- 30:41Speaker 1: who is working on this experiment where he can pretty
- 30:45Speaker 1: much like he can increase the longevity.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Right.
- 30:49Speaker 1: He's working on this very very forbidden experiment, and when
- 30:54Speaker 1: he gets on a review panel, these judges pretty much
- 30:59Speaker 1: tell him what he's doing is wrong, it's unethical, and
- 31:03Speaker 1: they revoke his medical license and therefore ending his study.
- 31:08Speaker 1: And he takes his own life because of that and
- 31:12Speaker 1: his recently married wife, Missus Johnson, who great performance by
- 31:17Speaker 1: the way by Solidad Miranda she in In in the
- 31:23Speaker 1: Trauma I hate to use that word, but in the
- 31:26Speaker 1: wake of his death, she decides to get revenge on
- 31:28Speaker 1: the doctors. She wants to kill them. So she goes
- 31:32Speaker 1: out and kind of tracks these doctors down by one
- 31:35Speaker 1: by one and uses her ability as a woman to
- 31:40Speaker 1: kind of coax in and use like her prowess to
- 31:44Speaker 1: pull them in. And then when she does get them in,
- 31:46Speaker 1: she she murders them. She gets revenge, okay, and in
- 31:49Speaker 1: Jess Franco fashion, not all of these doctors are men.
- 31:54Speaker 1: One thing that's very big in Jess Franco's fomography is lesbian.
- 31:59Speaker 1: There's always some sort of lesbian scene and a Just
- 32:03Speaker 1: Franco movie always always but yeah, so she basically goes
- 32:09Speaker 1: like doctor to doctor and coaxes them in and when
- 32:12Speaker 1: she gets the opportunity, she kills them. And what's really
- 32:15Speaker 1: great about this movie is it feels so much more
- 32:19Speaker 1: put together than any other Franco film, Like it genuinely
- 32:23Speaker 1: feels like he has like an interesting plot here, and
- 32:26Speaker 1: the movie moves so well, and there's like these very
- 32:30Speaker 1: dream like sequences that we cut back to where it'll
- 32:33Speaker 1: be like a close up on her eyes on the
- 32:36Speaker 1: cover ar here she's sitting in sort of like this.
- 32:39Speaker 1: She has her knees up and it's pulled very close
- 32:41Speaker 1: and she's just sitting on the couch and you know,
- 32:45Speaker 1: kind of suffering from this loss. And we keep cutting
- 32:48Speaker 1: back to this into certain moments, and it's just a
- 32:51Speaker 1: really interesting piece of his history. And like I said,
- 32:55Speaker 1: the crew he had the same crew from Vampires Lesbo.
- 32:57Speaker 1: So this movie is be You beautiful, Like every frame
- 33:03Speaker 1: is stunning.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Now, do you feel like this is one of just
- 33:08Speaker 2: Franco's more accessible films or like a good starting point
- 33:11Speaker 2: if maybe you're unfamiliar with, like you know, his his films.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Yeah, because you're still gonna get a taste. You're gonna
- 33:18Speaker 1: get a really good taste of what he's into, which
- 33:23Speaker 1: is there's a lot of interviews with Franco and with
- 33:26Speaker 1: people who work with Franco who screamed to the to
- 33:32Speaker 1: the roof how wonderful this guy was to work with.
- 33:36Speaker 1: And he had a very dedicated group of actors that
- 33:42Speaker 1: he worked with, even though the content they were naked
- 33:45Speaker 1: and they were in these situations, you know, but he
- 33:49Speaker 1: he did work with a set number of them multiple
- 33:52Speaker 1: times and they they love working with him, and he
- 33:53Speaker 1: was very visual, so he had a very unique way
- 33:57Speaker 1: of shooting these scenes that never I wouldn't say never,
- 34:01Speaker 1: but like it rarely crossed the territory to being trashy
- 34:04Speaker 1: or exploitative. So it's it's it's interesting, you know. So
- 34:09Speaker 1: I do think this is a good, a good starting point.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Just understand that from here there are movies that are
- 34:15Speaker 1: more of that, and then there are also some of
- 34:18Speaker 1: his movies that are less of this. Okay, so it's
- 34:22Speaker 1: kind of a good, a good middle point.
- 34:24Speaker 4: Dude.
- 34:24Speaker 1: It's like eighty two minutes long. It's not long time. Yeah,
- 34:29Speaker 1: it's not long at all. Like you can get in
- 34:31Speaker 1: and out of it. There's a really good on this.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Severn releases a really good interview with Jess Franco where
- 34:38Speaker 1: he kind of talks about, uh, the back to back
- 34:41Speaker 1: shooting of this in Vampires Lisbos. And this was pretty
- 34:44Speaker 1: early on in the two hundred and four movies he
- 34:47Speaker 1: would eventually go on to direct. This was less than
- 34:50Speaker 1: twenty years after his starting point, so this was pretty
- 34:52Speaker 1: early on, and from this point he certainly made worse
- 34:58Speaker 1: a lot worse films, you know what I mean.
- 35:00Speaker 3: It's quite the resume.
- 35:03Speaker 1: I always think of I think of Jess Franco and
- 35:06Speaker 1: Joe Tomatto in like the same vein, because Joe Tomato
- 35:10Speaker 1: kind of like Joe Tomato shot under multiple names in
- 35:14Speaker 1: his career. Joe Tomato. Also, I don't think this happened
- 35:19Speaker 1: to just Franco, but Joe Tomatto was he loved his excess,
- 35:26Speaker 1: and later in his career he started doing adult films
- 35:29Speaker 1: as a way to just be behind the camera because
- 35:31Speaker 1: it made money and he just wanted to shoot movies.
- 35:35Speaker 1: And I don't think just Franco ever got to that point,
- 35:39Speaker 1: but they were both a lover of the excess. So
- 35:44Speaker 1: definitely check those out. I think that's a good, uh,
- 35:47Speaker 1: a good starting point.
- 35:49Speaker 4: I'll do you have, Chuck me?
- 35:51Speaker 1: What do you what do you watch? Why do you
- 35:53Speaker 1: watch Hereditary? First man?
- 35:54Speaker 4: And then okay, I got.
- 35:59Speaker 1: All right, Chuck. What else you got going on? Man?
- 36:01Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 36:01Speaker 4: So for the next release, I'm going to talk about
- 36:03Speaker 4: Grindhouse Releas's release of A Cat in the Brain.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Dude, it's like Ogie month man. Everybody's talking about Fulci.
- 36:12Speaker 1: I love it.
- 36:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:14Speaker 4: Well, I mean I just got it in with the
- 36:17Speaker 4: other movie where we'll be talking about later on. Kind
- 36:18Speaker 4: of bundled it together. But yeah Branton directed by Luccio Fulci,
- 36:23Speaker 4: also starring Fulci playing Fulci for the most.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Part, as he well, he's in The Cat and the
- 36:32Speaker 1: Brain a lot more than in some of his other movies.
- 36:34Speaker 1: But yeah, it's very funny.
- 36:37Speaker 4: But uh yeah, I think this. I looked this up
- 36:39Speaker 4: at This was like his send off, like his last
- 36:42Speaker 4: movie that he directed, and is it dude?
- 36:47Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, I like forgot that guy's Like, I feel
- 36:51Speaker 1: like he's still out there directing, you know.
- 36:53Speaker 4: Yeah, so what it just came out in nineteen ninety, Yeah,
- 36:58Speaker 4: in nineteen ninety, but dude, Yeah, I've been watching a
- 37:00Speaker 4: lot of weird movies and this movie takes the cake.
- 37:03Speaker 4: This thing is insane.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Grindhouse always, when I first started collecting Grindhouse releasing, they
- 37:09Speaker 1: would always kind of bundle Cat in the Brain and
- 37:12Speaker 1: I Drink Your Blood Together as like their two like
- 37:15Speaker 1: acid trip movies. And when I finally saw Cat and
- 37:18Speaker 1: a Brain, I just remember being like.
- 37:20Speaker 3: What the fuck is this?
- 37:24Speaker 4: So many decapitations in that film, Yeah, so much going on.
- 37:30Speaker 4: One of them being what was that the like the
- 37:31Speaker 4: closed chest where the closed trunk at the bottom of
- 37:34Speaker 4: the bed, like she gets her head just chopped off
- 37:36Speaker 4: from it shutting on her. It's like, yeah, dude makes
- 37:39Speaker 4: it look.
- 37:39Speaker 1: So easy and as super funky soundtrack too.
- 37:43Speaker 4: Oh yeah, for sure. I will say that orgy scene
- 37:48Speaker 4: was very odd, especially when it kept cutting back to
- 37:50Speaker 4: like a close up of Faulgy going yes, film it,
- 37:53Speaker 4: film it, dude, all right?
- 37:56Speaker 3: Whoa Yeah?
- 37:58Speaker 1: Well, I mean see if you're a massive fulm what
- 38:00Speaker 1: do you think of Katina Brain?
- 38:02Speaker 3: It's it's I mean, for his later works, it's an
- 38:06Speaker 3: experience for sure.
- 38:07Speaker 2: I mean I could, I could piggyback off of kind
- 38:10Speaker 2: of the acid trip vibes off that film. But that's
- 38:15Speaker 2: one that I feel like I don't get to revisit
- 38:17Speaker 2: as much as I probably should.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that's one that I actually kind of unfortunately forget
- 38:25Speaker 1: about mm hmmm a lot for some reason. But Grindhouse
- 38:29Speaker 1: Releasing did a great job, and I do love while
- 38:32Speaker 1: I love what they're doing now with the deluxe editions,
- 38:34Speaker 1: I do love their traditional Amma ray case. Did that
- 38:39Speaker 1: kat and Brain come with the soundtrack as well?
- 38:41Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 38:41Speaker 1: It cool? Yeah, super cool release.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Man.
- 38:44Speaker 1: I'm happy. I'm happy you watch that.
- 38:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I actually just watched that last night.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Oh you had a fun nightment, Oh, I had a
- 38:51Speaker 1: great night for especially for you and anybody watching. I
- 38:57Speaker 1: would definitely check out the foul Chief for Fake documentary,
- 39:01Speaker 1: beautiful documentary about his about his life and his filmography
- 39:05Speaker 1: and stuff.
- 39:07Speaker 4: Is that in the Beyond release.
- 39:09Speaker 1: It's in one of there's two documentaries about Fulgi. Okay,
- 39:13Speaker 1: there's Fulci for Fake and then there's Folty Talks, which
- 39:18Speaker 1: Fulci Talks is on the Severn release of I Believe
- 39:24Speaker 1: the Psychic.
- 39:26Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, I think you mentioned that last time, yes
- 39:29Speaker 4: on the four K.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, Yeah. To go back and look, it's like
- 39:33Speaker 1: an eighty minute documentary which I haven't had a chance
- 39:37Speaker 1: to watch yet.
- 39:38Speaker 2: He did such a wide array of films, like if
- 39:40Speaker 2: you really go back and look at like his filmography
- 39:44Speaker 2: and a whole I mean it just I think for
- 39:47Speaker 2: like a lot of us, it's it's like we focus
- 39:49Speaker 2: more on obviously like The Gates of Hell Trilogy, Zombie,
- 39:53Speaker 2: you know, New York Ripper, But there's a lot of
- 39:56Speaker 2: other films that even for myself, it's like I should
- 39:58Speaker 2: probably give some of his like Western and Work more
- 40:01Speaker 2: love or at least give it a watch.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really interesting with him because he was very
- 40:08Speaker 1: into before, like the Gates of Hell trilogy. Before he
- 40:11Speaker 1: got in all of that, like really big in the horror,
- 40:13Speaker 1: he was doing a lot of comedies and stuff, so
- 40:15Speaker 1: he was a big fan of structured storytelling HM. And
- 40:19Speaker 1: it was the Gates of Hell trilogy and some various
- 40:22Speaker 1: other movies where he kind of learned how visual horror
- 40:26Speaker 1: is and how you don't really need to attach everything
- 40:30Speaker 1: and tie it up in a perfect bowt in that
- 40:32Speaker 1: it's much scarier to have disconnecting points and crazy through lines,
- 40:38Speaker 1: and it's very nightmarish where you know, when you have
- 40:41Speaker 1: a nightmare, there's no resolutions to the nightmare. You know,
- 40:43Speaker 1: it's not like it's not like you wake up and
- 40:45Speaker 1: you're like, oh man, good thing, we made it out
- 40:47Speaker 1: of that alive, or that made perfect sense. So him
- 40:51Speaker 1: getting into horror, he really learned that, and I think
- 40:53Speaker 1: that's something that you see heavily in the Gates of
- 40:54Speaker 1: Hell trilogy and New York Ripper. This psychic I think
- 40:58Speaker 1: is him channeling back to his previous style of cohesive storyline,
- 41:05Speaker 1: a very straight plot, but most of his horror stuff
- 41:08Speaker 1: he just sort of completely abandoned that. MM hmmm, so good,
- 41:13Speaker 1: pick Man. I'm glad you watch that, very good pick.
- 41:16Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you. I'll be watching it again soon because
- 41:18Speaker 4: I yeah, I definitely need to relive that again.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Did you drop an edible before it?
- 41:24Speaker 4: No, but I'll be doing that next time.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:28Speaker 2: I feel like I would love to see Manhattan Baby
- 41:31Speaker 2: get the four K treatment at some point down the line.
- 41:33Speaker 2: That's another one that I just don't hear get talked
- 41:35Speaker 2: about all that much.
- 41:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:37Speaker 1: I have the Blown a Ground blue ray of that,
- 41:39Speaker 1: and then one never got an upgrade. I wonder I
- 41:42Speaker 1: wonder if if old uh, oh my gosh, I had
- 41:47Speaker 1: a blank what's his name? That owns Blown a Ground?
- 41:51Speaker 1: William Pick still has the phil Lustig still has the
- 41:55Speaker 1: rights to it to do a nice four K.
- 41:58Speaker 3: What about Enigma?
- 42:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I actually it's been a long time since I've
- 42:02Speaker 1: seen Enigma. I have it. Severn put that out, but
- 42:06Speaker 1: I don't actually remember anything from that. I gotta watch
- 42:08Speaker 1: that again.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Those two I wouldn't mind seeing, uh get the boutique
- 42:12Speaker 2: treatment get upgraded.
- 42:14Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, please.
- 42:16Speaker 1: See what's your second mystery?
- 42:18Speaker 4: Pick? I'm like nervous, Okay, don't Steve, Steve didn't tell
- 42:21Speaker 4: us Prior to this, we all told each other our picks,
- 42:24Speaker 4: but this time Steve kept everything a secret from us.
- 42:27Speaker 3: This is a new side of me.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Is getting comfortable with.
- 42:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, So I'm gonna I'm gonna kind of sandwich this.
- 42:36Speaker 2: So I went back, and I've been been revisiting a
- 42:41Speaker 2: lot of this director's films more recently, but I had
- 42:45Speaker 2: to pull Reservoir Dogs as one of my picks. I'm
- 42:48Speaker 2: trying to get a little variety with the movies that
- 42:50Speaker 2: I'm choosing. Yeah, man, I'll tell you what this was
- 42:56Speaker 2: going back and looking looking at this film, like this
- 42:59Speaker 2: was so a pivotal movie that I saw at such
- 43:02Speaker 2: an important time in my life. When I realized just
- 43:05Speaker 2: how like you could really dive into like there. It
- 43:12Speaker 2: just opened up the door to like so many different
- 43:14Speaker 2: movies for me at the time. And yeah, I just
- 43:19Speaker 2: I never like take for granted just how impactful this
- 43:22Speaker 2: movie was when I first saw it, But I just remember,
- 43:26Speaker 2: like a group of friends of mine rented it. We
- 43:29Speaker 2: were down in a friend's basement. We're all watching this,
- 43:32Speaker 2: and I'm just watching it and just like my mind
- 43:36Speaker 2: is just being blown with Like you know, it's a
- 43:38Speaker 2: very unconventional storytelling that takes place with the film, and
- 43:42Speaker 2: it's just leaving you guessing. You're trying to figure out
- 43:44Speaker 2: like exactly, like who's going to figure out what throughout
- 43:46Speaker 2: the entire film. That was my first taste of Quentin
- 43:50Speaker 2: Tarantino and just really solidified that is as one of
- 43:56Speaker 2: my favorite directors to follow, like anything he put out
- 43:59Speaker 2: going full And obviously I discovered pulp fiction as a
- 44:02Speaker 2: result after that.
- 44:04Speaker 3: But I always come back to this, did you.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Did you see that before or after True Romance?
- 44:10Speaker 2: I saw Reservoir Dogs was the first Tarantino film that
- 44:13Speaker 2: I saw, and then naturally I ended up discovering True
- 44:17Speaker 2: Romance as a result of it, you know, like a
- 44:20Speaker 2: couple of my friends had put me onto it.
- 44:22Speaker 1: So yeah, just asking because I remember seeing True Romance
- 44:27Speaker 1: before I did Reservoir Dogs. Oh no, okay, only because
- 44:31Speaker 1: like when I started getting into Tarantino. Obviously I knew
- 44:33Speaker 1: pulp fiction that came out when I was like seven yep,
- 44:36Speaker 1: so to be old enough to understand it. I remember
- 44:38Speaker 1: watching Reservoir Doll or True Romance first. I saw it
- 44:42Speaker 1: on broadcast like tbskay, heavily heavily edited, but I remember thinking,
- 44:51Speaker 1: at whatever age that was, I saw it how unique,
- 44:54Speaker 1: Like there was a certain flare to it and like
- 44:58Speaker 1: a certain to the dialogue that was very appealing to
- 45:02Speaker 1: my young reader, like mostly a reader at that time,
- 45:06Speaker 1: like my mind, I was like, ooh, this is really nice.
- 45:10Speaker 1: And then admittedly I saw Reservoir Dogs and I liked it.
- 45:13Speaker 1: I didn't love it. I still don't. It's still not
- 45:17Speaker 1: even in like my top five Tarantino, but I respect it.
- 45:21Speaker 3: Very happily.
- 45:22Speaker 2: It feels very edgy compared to a lot of like
- 45:26Speaker 2: the films that were coming out around that, like out
- 45:28Speaker 2: around that time. And yeah, I don't know. I always
- 45:33Speaker 2: go back and forth, like you know what I would
- 45:35Speaker 2: put in like that top three, you know, as far
- 45:37Speaker 2: as Tarantino films, but this one always, for me at least,
- 45:41Speaker 2: it's always kind of consistently stayed up there. But yeah,
- 45:46Speaker 2: I mean overall, I mean four K looked looked wonderful.
- 45:49Speaker 2: I had seen it one other time before, so this
- 45:52Speaker 2: I picked this up some time ago, but revisiting it,
- 45:55Speaker 2: I just kind of wanted to highlight the importance of
- 45:58Speaker 2: this film and what it meant to me.
- 46:02Speaker 3: I think, like.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Some of the aspects about this film that make it
- 46:06Speaker 2: so captivating. Obviously, it's a very non linear storytelling. You
- 46:11Speaker 2: are seeing the heist like it's never actually really shown
- 46:15Speaker 2: like that what happens. Were instead privy to the aftermath
- 46:20Speaker 2: and everything that unfolds as a result of it. Dialogue
- 46:24Speaker 2: is sharp, you know, the moral ambiguity that you have
- 46:28Speaker 2: with all these characters. I mean, obviously we know that
- 46:30Speaker 2: they're not great people, you know, they're you know, but
- 46:36Speaker 2: we're we're kind of like almost like the backseat driver
- 46:40Speaker 2: to this heist. Essentially, they're taking us along for this ride.
- 46:45Speaker 2: And this was kind of where the doors kind of
- 46:48Speaker 2: were open for me for like the stylized violence that's
- 46:53Speaker 2: very evident in a lot of Tarantino's films, and you know,
- 46:56Speaker 2: almost to the point of like excess. I don't know's
- 47:01Speaker 2: It's just such a special movie for me, and it
- 47:04Speaker 2: was just cool to watch. I haven't seen it quite
- 47:06Speaker 2: some time, so going back and digging into all of
- 47:10Speaker 2: his films right now.
- 47:12Speaker 1: It's funny that you brought that up on this episode
- 47:14Speaker 1: because I went back and I've started re listening to
- 47:17Speaker 1: Eli Roth's History of Horror Okay, where he put up
- 47:21Speaker 1: the uncut interviews that they used in the show. And
- 47:26Speaker 1: there's like a two and a half hour episode on
- 47:27Speaker 1: Quentin Tarantino that I'm just about the finish, and I've
- 47:30Speaker 1: listened to it before, but I'm always reminded that Quentin Tarantino,
- 47:35Speaker 1: for as original as his writing style is, he wears
- 47:39Speaker 1: his he wears his influences, his influence on his sleeve,
- 47:46Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And I feel like the
- 47:49Speaker 1: more in that you are on the kind of like
- 47:54Speaker 1: I've always feel like there's a little bit of like
- 47:55Speaker 1: Japanese influence in his films. With the more end that
- 47:58Speaker 1: you are into New ar or like the classic Samurai
- 48:01Speaker 1: films are the more the more you understand a Tarantino film,
- 48:07Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And it's kind of like
- 48:09Speaker 1: to me, it's kind of like misery with the ankle
- 48:12Speaker 1: scene that you're scene you think you see more than
- 48:15Speaker 1: you actually see.
- 48:17Speaker 3: Oh, I remember, and.
- 48:18Speaker 2: I think maybe it was just because it was so
- 48:21Speaker 2: unexpected the first time watching it. I just remember I
- 48:24Speaker 2: was so uncomfortable watching that, and then years later when
- 48:27Speaker 2: you go back to revisit, I mean, obviously it's a
- 48:29Speaker 2: very uncomfortable scene to sit through, but you're right, like
- 48:33Speaker 2: it's not really as graphic or gory as they make
- 48:37Speaker 2: it out. To me, it's almost leaving it up to
- 48:38Speaker 2: the imagination to determine how probably graphic that really would be.
- 48:43Speaker 2: You know, if you were mister Blonde and the one
- 48:46Speaker 2: you know performed that on the Police.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Officer, Yeah, yeah, that was top three Tarantino for me
- 48:55Speaker 1: in any order would be I know, my favorite is
- 49:00Speaker 1: Inglorious Bastards. That's my favorite film of his. And then
- 49:04Speaker 1: Once by a Time in Hollywood, And then I feel
- 49:06Speaker 1: like it's a toss up between Django Unchained and Kill
- 49:10Speaker 1: Bill Volume one.
- 49:13Speaker 2: I put Kill Bill Volume one in there, and I think,
- 49:17Speaker 2: I know it's very cliche. I think I would have
- 49:19Speaker 2: to put pulp fiction in there just because this and
- 49:24Speaker 2: pulp fiction were just it was just that time in
- 49:26Speaker 2: my life when I when I first found out about them,
- 49:28Speaker 2: so like, I have like a special place for them
- 49:31Speaker 2: for my love of film. So but I can understand that,
- 49:34Speaker 2: you know, it's obviously more of like a cultural zeitgeist,
- 49:37Speaker 2: and you know, it's the pulp fiction has been. You
- 49:41Speaker 2: know a lot of people name that as like one
- 49:43Speaker 2: of their favorite films.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, do good pick. I was not expecting that Yeah,
- 49:52Speaker 1: that was a very good pick.
- 49:53Speaker 4: Nice little surprise.
- 49:55Speaker 1: As I go right back into the expected territory.
- 49:59Speaker 3: Now come on now.
- 50:01Speaker 1: My second pick is from Siloid Dreams. It is a
- 50:06Speaker 1: short night of glass Dolls on four K. This first
- 50:12Speaker 1: of all, I love that Celluloid Dreams is doing these
- 50:14Speaker 1: hard boxes with the booklet big improvement packaging wise overcase
- 50:18Speaker 1: of the Bloody Iris, which I love to see. And
- 50:22Speaker 1: this is a I'm gonna butcher this name, so if
- 50:25Speaker 1: anybody knows a proper way to say them, me know.
- 50:27Speaker 4: Auto Latto.
- 50:29Speaker 1: Is a director most notorious directed Night Train Murders, recently
- 50:35Speaker 1: put out by Severn And I had seen this before,
- 50:39Speaker 1: but it was a long time ago, and the cut,
- 50:42Speaker 1: the version I watched of it looked terrible compared to
- 50:46Speaker 1: this beautiful four K. And to try to give a
- 50:52Speaker 1: sum up of this movie without really ruining too much,
- 50:55Speaker 1: we actually follow our main character. The movie starts with
- 50:57Speaker 1: him being discovered in a bush and he is appearing
- 51:04Speaker 1: to be dead, but he's not, as we hear in
- 51:08Speaker 1: the narrator, which is our main character, and what proceeds
- 51:14Speaker 1: from there is a story about the sudden disappearance of
- 51:18Speaker 1: his girlfriend. So his girlfriend comes to visit him. She
- 51:23Speaker 1: disappears after a night out, and we then follow not
- 51:28Speaker 1: only the mist the investigation that he goes on because
- 51:31Speaker 1: he's a reporter, him trying to find his missing girlfriend,
- 51:35Speaker 1: but also this prolonged, incredibly suspenseful side story of him
- 51:45Speaker 1: watching the post death process because they think he's dead,
- 51:50Speaker 1: so him going into the morgue, him going into the freezer,
- 51:55Speaker 1: being pulled from the freezer, and they there's actually some
- 51:58Speaker 1: brief moments where they think still alive. So to do
- 52:01Speaker 1: these experiments to try to figure out it's crazy. And
- 52:06Speaker 1: I here's the thing, I don't know if I go
- 52:11Speaker 1: as far and Steve maybe helped me out here to
- 52:13Speaker 1: consider this a shallow because it carries no none of
- 52:19Speaker 1: the familiar shallow tropes tropes. It none, this movie's almost bloodless,
- 52:27Speaker 1: like it's.
- 52:28Speaker 2: I mean, would okay, Chris, would you say that, I mean,
- 52:32Speaker 2: you've seen a number of Jalli. Do you feel like
- 52:36Speaker 2: this film is like it's pretty reserved compared to like
- 52:43Speaker 2: what we typically will watch, right, I mean, it's I
- 52:45Speaker 2: would say, it's pretty tame.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Yeah, But I feel like obviously Jally came out of
- 52:54Speaker 1: the rise of the Yellow Covered Mystery thriller, not right,
- 53:01Speaker 1: Jallo being yellow in Italian and the the tropes that
- 53:08Speaker 1: we've come to know were present in a good number
- 53:11Speaker 1: of those books, but they were really that grew due
- 53:16Speaker 1: to kind of what Jallo came in film, you know
- 53:19Speaker 1: what I mean, Like those tropes were what was seen,
- 53:22Speaker 1: so those kind of became the rule. And I feel
- 53:24Speaker 1: like this feels directly out of the pages of a
- 53:28Speaker 1: yellow book. It feels like an old school, very subdued
- 53:35Speaker 1: mystery like mystery.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Thriller, less stylize, I feel like, compared to some of
- 53:42Speaker 2: like the more known ones. I mean, I think we
- 53:45Speaker 2: were talking about some of like Argento's and if it's
- 53:50Speaker 2: our gento is a great way to get into like
- 53:53Speaker 2: this Shiallow subgenre. But the thing is you got to
- 53:58Speaker 2: understand that there's a lot more substance since and I
- 54:01Speaker 2: mean I would say, yeah, substance, but also it's like
- 54:03Speaker 2: more style over substance when it comes to his works,
- 54:07Speaker 2: and not all Shallows are like that, this being one
- 54:12Speaker 2: of them, I don't.
- 54:13Speaker 3: I don't think that they're with shortened edded glass styles.
- 54:16Speaker 2: I feel like it's a little bit more subdued compared
- 54:19Speaker 2: to probably, like you know, somebody's just getting into it
- 54:22Speaker 2: like that.
- 54:23Speaker 1: And the reason I brought that up because I actually
- 54:26Speaker 1: believe this is, in the traditional sense, a very strong
- 54:32Speaker 1: example of Jallo, because Jallo is known to be what
- 54:36Speaker 1: has come from Argenta, what has come from Lendzi, what
- 54:38Speaker 1: has come from Bava. That's the mass portrayal of Jallo.
- 54:45Speaker 1: While this I feel like, almost by definition or original definition,
- 54:50Speaker 1: is incredibly authentic to that. Because this movie, while not
- 54:55Speaker 1: hyper stylized, is beautiful, Like this movie is shot incredibly well,
- 55:01Speaker 1: great use of shadows. There's a lot of cool visual
- 55:04Speaker 1: play here that comes from a very professional direction, Like
- 55:12Speaker 1: there is a sense of scale here, there's almost like
- 55:14Speaker 1: a little bit of prestige. Like this movie does have
- 55:18Speaker 1: a little bit of like a classy value to it,
- 55:21Speaker 1: you know, in the settings and the production design. It
- 55:25Speaker 1: does feel that way. And Altolato and the booklet here
- 55:28Speaker 1: they talk about how he was kind of known for
- 55:31Speaker 1: his subdued nature of filmmaking. He didn't really go as
- 55:34Speaker 1: far as as somebody else did or as everybody else did,
- 55:39Speaker 1: And this is a story about I think, down to
- 55:42Speaker 1: the very core, like the class separation, because we have,
- 55:47Speaker 1: without spoiling the film, we get introduced to this upper
- 55:52Speaker 1: society cult like status who, for lack of of strong word,
- 56:02Speaker 1: is pretty much feeding off of the weaker classes to
- 56:05Speaker 1: keep themselves alive. Essentially what's happening and as this mystery unfolds,
- 56:11Speaker 1: this movie is really slow, So if you do not
- 56:12Speaker 1: have the patience, this movie is like an endurance test,
- 56:17Speaker 1: you know. This is like it is a long ninety
- 56:20Speaker 1: seven minutes, Like there were multiple points where I feel
- 56:23Speaker 1: like sometimes my ADHD kind of took over and I
- 56:26Speaker 1: found myself.
- 56:28Speaker 3: It's more of a slow burn, very but the ending, which.
- 56:32Speaker 1: I'm not going to spoil it here, the final act
- 56:35Speaker 1: makes it all so worth it. Like this is a wild,
- 56:40Speaker 1: wild ending and on two fronts, because there's the ending
- 56:45Speaker 1: to the mystery and then there's the ending to the
- 56:49Speaker 1: present time story of him viewing, you know, and there's
- 56:55Speaker 1: all this build up and lead up, and there's two
- 56:57Speaker 1: fantastic endings to this. So I was very shocked at
- 57:02Speaker 1: how much how much I enjoyed this, I want to say,
- 57:07Speaker 1: from a physical media standpoint, there was also This was
- 57:10Speaker 1: released by eighty eight Films as well over in the
- 57:13Speaker 1: UK another fantastic label. Two different transfers Our Buddy Jordan
- 57:19Speaker 1: from the movie Den did a side by side comparison
- 57:21Speaker 1: of these two over on YouTube. I know he sided
- 57:25Speaker 1: with eighty eight films. It is a little bit brighter,
- 57:28Speaker 1: but I actually like the darker kind of more contrast
- 57:33Speaker 1: the view here, and I feel like it is much
- 57:35Speaker 1: more authentic to the original. People do this thing where like,
- 57:40Speaker 1: especially when you get into restorations and reviewing restorations, where
- 57:44Speaker 1: like they see the image and then they make this
- 57:46Speaker 1: conclusion of like, oh, this is better because of the
- 57:48Speaker 1: image that I see. But films are purposely shot dark
- 57:53Speaker 1: from a creative point of view, and I feel like
- 57:54Speaker 1: this movie works as a visually dark film. Therefore, I
- 58:01Speaker 1: loved the restoration. I think it's incredibly authentic. I felt
- 58:05Speaker 1: like I was watching the vision. It never felt too
- 58:10Speaker 1: dark or too subdued. It felt like everything worked perfectly.
- 58:16Speaker 3: Now you saw the case of the Bloody Iris.
- 58:20Speaker 2: So comparing the two films, I mean, were there things
- 58:23Speaker 2: you liked about this film compared to that one, or
- 58:27Speaker 2: like maybe the releases in general, things that you felt
- 58:31Speaker 2: like stood out about A short Night of Glass Styles compared.
- 58:34Speaker 3: To their first release, well a booklet, Yeah.
- 58:38Speaker 1: I knew it.
- 58:39Speaker 3: What was I thinking.
- 58:40Speaker 1: Always always the addition of a booklet.
- 58:42Speaker 3: Yeah, dude, but this is what's really.
- 58:46Speaker 1: Cool about Slightly Dreams a the time that they put in.
- 58:49Speaker 1: You know, I feel like I own two releases of
- 58:54Speaker 1: films that were put together by people who also love
- 58:56Speaker 1: these movies.
- 58:58Speaker 3: There's a lot of love that goes into it.
- 59:00Speaker 1: Tons of love. But these are two totally different sides
- 59:02Speaker 1: of the of the shallow.
- 59:04Speaker 4: You know.
- 59:04Speaker 1: Case of the Bloody Iris is much more stylized, much
- 59:08Speaker 1: more ridiculous, much more in that like a slightly trashier
- 59:13Speaker 1: not very much, but it is. There is some sleeves,
- 59:16Speaker 1: whereas Short Night of Glass doalls like it's kind of like,
- 59:23Speaker 1: what's kind of like the like to me, Short Night
- 59:26Speaker 1: of Glass Dolls is very exorcist and its portrayal of like, oh,
- 59:32Speaker 1: let's you know, let's treat this with some money. This
- 59:36Speaker 1: is meant to be this more prestigious approach to this genre.
- 59:40Speaker 1: Case of the Bloody Iris is kind of like Beyond
- 59:43Speaker 1: the Door, you know what I mean. Beyond the Door
- 59:46Speaker 1: is the extras rip off, but it's much sleazier. It's
- 59:49Speaker 1: it doesn't have that same kind of professionality behind it.
- 59:53Speaker 1: Both films are excellent. Both restorations are excellent. And that's
- 59:56Speaker 1: the thing too, you know, Sellular Dreams. Case of the
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Bloody Iris was also like a radically different type of
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: transfer than this, but it fit that movie so well.
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: Case of the.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Bloody Iris was very bright and vibrant.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: Yep, this is not.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: This is kind of desaturated, very dark. So you know,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: in in in their restoration efforts, you can see them
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: going in and really kind of figuring out what's this
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: movie is supposed to look like. Also technically, how do
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: we at what point are the highlights not blown out?
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: What are the you know, so you have that great
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: technical approach as to like making it look professional and
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: making it look how it should, but it doesn't feel
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: unnatural to the film, if that makes sense.
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: So yeah, there are restorations. I mean there's just so
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: much effort that goes into them, and especially with them
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: being like a newer label, I feel like it's just
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: so important to support, you know, labels that you know
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: they're obviously they don't they this is only their second release,
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: but I know they have the Black Belly of the Trench,
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: So that's coming up here, hopefully sooner than later. And
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: if the same amount of love that goes that has
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: gone into these last.
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: Two releases, goes into that.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: I mean, you could be looking at a label that's
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: really going to be uh, you know, standing at its
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: own two feet in the near future.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, man, So that's still available. You can
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: actually get that through Celluloid Dreams. I would also highly
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: recommend Case of the Bloody Iris.
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: If you don't own that, looks like I'll be picking
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: up both of those films.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: You better, you better man?
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, man, you bet.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: I know Chris and I were talking about, but the
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: Case of the Bloody Iris, at least for me last
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: year was one of my favorite releases. So hats off
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: to Celluloid Dreams four K was phenomenal. I tell anyone
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: who's getting into Giallo or or just looking for new
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: movies to add to their collection that that that's definitely
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: up there, like one.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: That I try to tell everybody that I know.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, the lights just flickered. Oh shit, I don't know, Chuck,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: would you go for your.
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: Chris, you're capturing the ambience.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: You're getting a little scary in here. But Chris, I
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: know you like this release. My last pick is going
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: to be Second Site's release of George marrow Is nineteen
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: seventy eight classic Dawn of the Dead, which comes with
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: not one, but two books.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: It does, it does come with two books. But I
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: will say, and I'm going to say it now so
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: you guys, you guys hear from me. Uh, this will
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: be on season three of Beyond the Blood. We will
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: be talking about the Dead. Make I'm going to make
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: it happen, just so you know.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: We'll do that for March episode my birthday.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: Should we record it from the actual mall that was
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: filmed at.
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: Unfortunately that's getting bought out this year. I was going
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: to bring this up. It's getting bought out this year.
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: I don't know if it's Walmart or Target, but I
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: have a feeling they're going to tear it down very soon.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: It's Walmart and Walmart and they said they had no
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: intentions of tearing it down because I think it still
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: brings in good business.
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: But okay, because that was like my first thought. I
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: was like when I heard Walmart was fine, I was like,
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: a great piece of horror history is going to get
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: demolished to put up a Mega of Walmart. But if
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: they're not going to destroy it, then good because I
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: would like to go to one of the conventions that
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: they hold there, like during the anniversary of things. Yeah.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Yeah, So how was it for this this watch of it?
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: Oh, it's I've watched this movie like almost every other month.
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: It's I love It's one of my favorite films.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: I was about to have first time watch. Yeah, actually, so, uh,
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: you fooled me. No, But this has three cuts.
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: It's got the theatrical cut, the extended cut, and the
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: Argento cut, which I have not watched yet, but from
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: what I've heard, I think it cuts out a lot
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: of the comedic things that George threw into the film,
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: kind of just to make it a little bit more dude.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: It cuts out like fifty nine minutes, So you know,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: you have the theatrical cut, which is the shortest, and
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: then the extended cut is the can cut. So that
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: was the one that comer at the festival. And I
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: believe the Can cut is nineteen minutes longer than the
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: theatrical and I think the original cut was like one
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: hundred and sixty minutes wow, and our gentle cut it
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: down to like ninety ninety nine minutes I think. And
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: there's also different music and stuff. I've seen it once,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: but I just watched a can cut every time.
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: Yeah, that was the last one I watched, was the
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: can Cut. I still got to give the Argento cut
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: a watch, but it's awesome. I like the CDs that
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: it comes with. You got that Goblin CD.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Yeah, my favorite is like the Elevator, like the what
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: do you call it music CD? It's like the music
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: that plays in the mall.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: Oh yeah that is it? The Yeah?
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: Yeah, very like I call it Elevator music. There's a
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: name to it that. It's like the Library music. I
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: think they call it.
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, what's not to love about this movie.
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: It's one of my favorite zombie films. I love everything
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: about it. And I just watched a Land of the
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: Dead recently as well. There was a nice little easter
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: egg in it with Tom Savigni basically in the same
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: get up that he was in and Dawn of the Dead,
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: kind of like bringing his character back from that. But like, yeah,
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: it was fun.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: Yeah, And I would definitely recommend people to read the
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: so they came with the novel m and that release
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: also comes with a huge booklet called Documenting the Dead
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: Dissecting the Dissecting the Dead. Yeah, there's a couple great
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: write ups in there. There's one really good one that
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: focuses on the character of Francine. There's also a great
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: one near the end that talks about the distribution so
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: all of this stuff, with the deal with Argento for
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: it to go over, the different cuts and all that stuff.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: It's really some great, great write ups in there. One
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: thing I found is that there's so many essays that
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: they do kind of cross over each other a lot.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: You get a lot of like kind of the same
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: conversation piece over and over again throughout. But there was
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: there was a handful of most most were were fantastic,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: fantastic read. So if anybody has that release, definitely read
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: that book lit.
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: Yeah. I spent a pretty penny on this set Monster
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: Mania a few years back, and I'm just I'm just
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: gonna leave it at that.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: I bought that for my birthday from Zombie when it
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: first came out, and I think it was one hundred
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: and sixty brand new.
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: I paid less than you that.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: One hundred and thirty.
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: Maybe then I paid more. I paid more fifty for
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: this which release?
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: Did you get the Deluxe he had.
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, the deluxe one.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I know one thirty it was, there
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: was one thirty sixty six. I remember, Okay, I remember
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: because at that time I wasn't too heavy into collecting,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: and it was the most I had ever spent on
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: a release and probably still probably up in the top
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: is the most I've ever spent.
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: Yeah, this was like my first big collector's purchase. And uh,
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: I was kind of bummed out because I saw it
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: sitting and I forget who the vendor was, So if
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: you're listening, I'm sorry, but it was like one of
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: the first tables that you walked past and I saw
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: it sitting there and I was getting ready to walk
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: over and I saw something you just sprint towards it,
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: picking up in his hands. I was like, well, my loss.
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: And then five minutes later I circled back and was
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: sitting on the table. I was like, uh, it's like
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: that guy coming back for this or like nah. I
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: was like, all right, how much you want boom cashing
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: handgates and I was like, yeah, that's it. I'm done
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: for the day.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: That's incredible Monstermania. Immediately right after he's like all right.
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: I mean I walked around, but I basically spent a
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: big portion of the money that I was willing to
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: spend that day.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: It was meant to be.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that's an incredible release though, and definitely like I
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: just put down a note, we're gonna cover that in
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: season three ft Yeah, I mean I'm surprised we hadn't yet.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: I feel like there's always so much that we want
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: to cover. It kind of gets like so much stuff
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: gets overlooked, you know what I mean. Well, that's why
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: this show is gonna keep going on forever.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: Yeah, So, Chuck, I have to ask you, out of
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: the Living Dead trilogy, which one's your favorite?
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: Night?
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Oh wait, Steve, what's yours?
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: Man? That's hard, I.
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: Yeah, because Night's not only my favorite in the trilogy,
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: it's just my favorite movie in general. I watch it
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: at least once a month.
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: I would have I would have to say Night of
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: the Living Dead. That's so hard.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: But it's it's it's tough because there's a part of
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: me that feels like Day of the Dead is just
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: such a like it's such a like Carey watch.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: It a lot.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I was hoping we were going to have like
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: a trifecta of like each of us whatever different because
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: my favorite is Day of the Day.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: So you were hoping Steve would say, Dawn, I'll throw
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: a curple. I'm going to give you this zaxt night
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: or down to the Dead. Actually, I'm kidding, guys, I'm kidding.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: I'm kidding.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: Your favorite is a Diary of the Dead.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: Oh my god, Steven's no longer a host on this anymore.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: The Diary of the Dead.
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: God damn it, dude. I got down with Diary of
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: the Day when that came out. I watched that movie
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: like maybe five times in one week.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: I had the Dimensioned Extreme DVD. Yeah, that was good Man,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: and I watched that. I tried watching that a couple
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: of years ago when I picked up the Blu ray
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: and I was like, I don't know why I like
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: this so much. It's a shame because like later Romero
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: is like, you know, I I understand a lot of
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: be trying to do and I admire it, but like,
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: I have a hard time getting through Survival of the Dead.
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: Uh for Survival, I will say, I watched that movie
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: one time and I completely forget it.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Yeah, so yeah, it's a rough one, but that's all right.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: So Steve, what's that? Uh? Oh sorry, truck ahead?
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: No, no, no, I was gonna say. I think like
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: the main reason I like Diary back when it first
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: came out was because it was in that you know,
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: first person found footage style thing. I was like, oh, yeah,
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: this is awesome.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: I mean, you got to give it to Romero for
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: trying something new that far in his career and like
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: doing a newer trend. Yeah, I mean you got to
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: you got to give it to him for trying something new.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: I just don't think it worked very well, if at all.
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: Yeah, looking back now.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: Like I remember watching Survival of the Dead and it
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: follows the characters who appeared in Diary of the Dead,
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: like they showed up in the van scene. It was
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: that soldier and you have there's a main follow up
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: that you follow in Survival, And I remember starting Survival
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: and being like, what the fuck are these guys? Like
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: I could completely forgot they were in Diary of the Dead.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: But Steve, what's that? What's that? Mystery? Third pick?
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: All right, this is the one that I was waiting for.
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: Toby Hooper's Life Force on.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: Four KH, recently released by Arrow, and I've never seen
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: this man it was so good, so good. So I
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: as far as I'm aware, I believe Scream Factory they release.
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: A four K with just wasn't it just the theatrical cut?
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: Yeah, bastards, dude, that's what I have. It's just the
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: four K is just the theatrical on. Who the hell
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: watches the theatrical cut of Life Force?
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: Oh my god, this was so good.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: I just I had heard good things about it, obviously,
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: like Toby Hooper, and somehow this film has always kind
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: of escaped me.
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: I never had a chance to actually see it. I know.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: On I think one of our live streams, I was
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: talking about how long it took to arrive, but I
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: finally got it, safe and sound and man energy vampires,
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: full nudity.
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: It was awesome. It was awesome, dude.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: That was like the one I remember the first time
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: I'd ever seen Life for Us and I again, I
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: saw it on I think it was it was some
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: broadcast cut of it. The movie was like twelve minutes
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: shorter because they couldn't show any of Mythilda, may you
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: know what I mean? And like all of those scenes
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: with her, like yeah, she's nude, but like those scenes
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: are so prominent and they make they make so much
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: sense in the grand scope of things, like the beginning.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: I remember watching the beginning scene of her when they
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: discover her yea and she sucks the life out of
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: the doctor or of the science, and it was so choppy.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: I'm like, what the hell is this movie? Years later,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: I remember watching it on streaming somehow and I was like,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: she's naked. I was like, what the hell.
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: I just love I mean the opening sequence and when
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: they first find her, like visually, it's something else, Like
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: I don't I don't know what type of budget that
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: they gave Toby Hooper for this, but it felt like
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: he would just went carp blanche with what he was
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: able to do, and it was it was just more
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: in tune with like it just felt like it was
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: his vision.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: Five million dollars.
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: So for the time, Yeah, and I feel like that's
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: quite a bit.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: Unfortunately it only grows eleven. Well, that's unfortunate and just
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: a fun fact for people who know there is a
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: sixteen minute difference between the theatrical and the direct good.
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: That's a big ut.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I love I'm a sucker for like Cosmic Horror.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: You could definitely tell that there was like that lovecrafting
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: and influence on the film.
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: You had the the apocalyptic stakes towards the end of it.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: Oh my god, dude, the movie gets so big in
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: scale so quickly.
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: It did not go nearly in the direction that I
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: was anticipating, because it felt like a very like smaller
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: scale movie.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: Initially, and then by the end, I'm like, dude, I
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: don't even feel like I'm watching the same movie any If.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: You if you watched the first half hour of this
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: movie and fall asleep and wake up at like the
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: hour fifteen minute mark, you would be convinced you're watching
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: a totally different movie. Like you would wake up and
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: be like when that happened?
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: It feels like.
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: The you know, obviously, the reoccurring theme you know throughout
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: the film is is you know, you have like the
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: the female likes what would you say, space vampire and
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: using that sexual energy as power throughout it. So obviously
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: that's like a reoccurring thing or like a theme throughout.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: Obviously a lot of the the supporting cast, it's like
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: loss of control or like, you know, possession. Just it
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: was I don't know, man, that was probably one of
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: the better movies I've seen in a while, and as
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: far as Toby Hooper's movies, I mean, obviously like Texas
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: Chainsaw is a big one, and poultric Ice, I'd probably
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: put that up there in my top three.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: Yeah, life Force is great, man, It's just so radically different,
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: and I do feel like that movie kind of gets
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: pushed to the side for sure a little bit, you
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: know what I mean. But uh, that Era one one day.
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: I definitely want to upgrade to that because I would
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: love to have the director's cut on four K. But yeah,
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: nobody's ever seen Life Force. Definitely check out. It's also
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: a beautiful I know this is only an audio only episode,
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: but the arrow has a great slipcover on. It looks lovely.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: It's got like this cool like gloss pop to it.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: And yeah, it looks very very good.
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: It looks really nice.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: Yeah, so definitely do great three choices man, Oh yeah,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: great choice.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: So I want I know we're saving one for the end,
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: so that's like a movie that we can all agree upon.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: And yeah, yeah, well I'll keep this next one short
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: because I feel like there's not much I can say
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: about it to really add but I did get and
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: I've already watched the Ignite Films release of Reanimator on four.
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: That looks so good.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: This is a yeah, thick release, very reminiscent of Second
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: Sight films. Like the digibook that holds the packs you have,
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: the art cards, you have, the book as well as
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: the hard box on the outside looks fantastic in four K.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: I mean, Reanimeter is one of my favorite films of
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: all time. I think that Stuart Gordon's kind of like
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: best best movie. It just worked. You have Jeffrey Combs,
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Barbara Crampton, like this movie's David Gale, Like this movie
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: is so good and it moves so quickly, Like this
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: movie feels like it never slows down, It just keeps
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: keeps going. This four K restoration looks fantastic, especially at
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: you know, like I like four K transfers that don't
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: pop out at me, very heavy, Like I just want
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: to acknowledge the movies good. And then it looks that
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: consistent all the way through, and I recognize that there
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: is a drastic improvement. But in the end scene in
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: the morgue with the fog and the chaos in that scene,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: I feel like that's when it really stood out to
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: me how beautiful this restoration looked. Of course, there's there's
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: so much here that is so iconic to a trashy,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: violent cinema. You know, you have the eye bulging scene
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: at the beginning where the eyeballs explode. You have the
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: head giving head scene, which is you know, as as
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: as notorious as it gets, you know what I mean.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: There's just so much, so much greatness and reanimated. It's
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: so it never tries to be a horror comedy. It's horror,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: and it's just so naturally funny without having to really
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: put in the effort to being funny. And yeah, it's
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I'm so happy it finally got a great presentation. I
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: did own that Arrow Blu Ray set, which I did
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: sell to I bought this and then I sold that
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: to a collector who wondered it, so I ended up
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: coming out even on that. But I do think for
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: the fortieth anniversary, this is the definitive. I cannot see
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: a world where I buy another re Animator release. I
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: don't really see a reason to.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: Did you feel like the compare, because I know you
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: had the Errow releases on Blu Ray. Did you feel
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: like it was a pretty noticeable jump in quality with
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: like the transfer or just like the presentation as a whole.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: I you know, I didn't do a side by side,
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: you know, that's not really my thing. I did watch
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: it and I was like, oh shit, this looks really good,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: you know, like in my head, I was like, yeah,
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: this is definitely like I said, especially in the end,
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: because I think I think Reanimator for the most part
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: is pretty like there's not a lot of visual style
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: to it. You know, like you have the green, the
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: bright green of the serum, but other than that, everything's
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: pretty shot and lit kind of very ordinarily.
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: You have the dark basement, which basement looks great. I
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: did feel like I saw a little bit more going
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: on in the darker corners of the basement. One scene
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: that really stood out to me was with the cat
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: when when Herbert West is being attacked by a cat
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: and you have the light, yeah, bouncing it in the
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: room as they're trying to hit it with the shovel.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: So like that stood out to me. And like I said,
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: at the end, when the moree fills with the smoke
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: and you kind of have the chaos of that scene,
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: that's really when I saw the where the improvements were.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean it was good enough that I'm
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: happy I own it, you know what I mean.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: So, Chris, I gotta ask you, would you consider Reanimator
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: or From Beyond your favorite Stuart Stuart Gordon film Animator?
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: Okay, I feel like I feel like, uh, how how
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: do I I'm trying to remember how to use this
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: phrase properly, which I don't. Oh, never mind, it wouldn't
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: be the right order. Anyway. From Beyond is great. From
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: Beyond is very easily my second favorite story Cordon film.
- 1:21:00Speaker 4: Mm hmmm.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: I just feel like Reanimator is so iconic, like I
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: could put it on it anytime and just enjoy it.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: You know, there were things about re Animator that very
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: young shamefully resonated with me. Of course, Barbara Crampton, you
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: know what I mean, which in reading story of Gordon's biography,
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: they actually had her lay naked on a freezing cold
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: like surgical bed. You know that that was real and
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: they actually had to use hair dryers to heat it
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: up before she laid on it. It's just like so
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: funny to me, and also too as I get older
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: and I feel like my sense of humor kind of
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: changes a little bit. I find that the darker humor funnier.
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: But I will say, you know, the that doctor Hill
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: and his obsession with her as I get older becomes
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: more disturbing, especially at the dinner scene in the first
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: half of the film, you know, like, that's really and
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: then it all comes to a head. Oh wow. I
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: did not mean to say that.
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: I was like, I see what she did there.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: When she opens her eyes and it cuts to the
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: shot of the fake head that he put on top
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: of his body and the exposed eyeball plastic. I found
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: it funnier than ever man, And I do want to
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: get a tattoo that just says, uh, I want to
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: get a tattoo of a notepad that just has cat
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: dead details. Later, even though that was never actually written,
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: you know, that was quoted, that was said, but I
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: still think that's that's yeah, yeah, that's I definitely think.
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: You know, well, here's the thing, Uh, support Ignite Films.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: You know these guys, these guys did an incredible job.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: And this is a label that I remember hearing about
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: with Invader from Mars. Invaders from Mars people were very
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: excited about it. I heard the transfer was beautiful, I
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: heard all this great stuff about it. This is the
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: true story of G I Joe is another release of theirs,
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: which I am not a G I Joe guy, so
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: that that release just didn't resonate with me in a
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: way that that encouraged me to pick it up. But
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: this is incredible. This is right next to this next
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: film that we're going to talk about, definitive proof of
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: the status of physical media and genre film, which right
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: now is I think at a peak, and I'm going
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: to use that as a segue to talk about would
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: I think everybody who has gotten as far as put together,
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: we all grit, we all got, and I think we've
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: all watched Grindhouse Releasing's release of The Beyond on four K,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: in this beautiful Book of Ebond Deluxe Edition, that.
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: Is I can't believe it's here.
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: It feels like it feels like this feels like, you know,
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: like like forbid and like this was never real, you
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: know what I mean.
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: Like maybe none of it is.
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: Hey, don't guess with my head, Chuck susceptible right now
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: after watching The Beyond.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: I don't if you had told me twelve thirteen years
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: ago that Lucio Fulci's Seven Doors of Death was going
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: to get a deluxe four K release with one of
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: the one of the greatest examples of physical media presentation
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: I've ever seen. I would have told you to jump
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: off a bridge. This is this is incredible release. Man,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: and I just watched this last night. This movie looks incredible, dude,
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: out of this world.
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: M hm, dude, I was amazed.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: Oh looks so good. I and I don't know how
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: to I'm a I'm a bonus features guy. Man, I
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: want to watch interviews, I want to do all that.
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: I don't know if this year I will be able
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: to get through everything in this release.
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: I would say that this release from Grindhouse Releasing is
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: probably one of the most stacked four k's.
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: That I've seen.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: And I couldn't even tell you how long with like
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: everything that like. Obviously it's a six six disc set,
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: and the amount of like content they just crammed into
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: it is just, I don't know, it's insane, and maybe
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: it makes sense why it ended up taking probably longer
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: than anybody was hoping it would, but this was beyond
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: well worth the waight U pun intended.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: So I want to give a breakdown for anybody listening
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: that has not picked this up and it's maybe seen
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: the pictures that people on social media have posted. This
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: is a sixth disc release that contains and I'm not
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: even gonna look, I'm gonna see if I remember this
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: off the top of my head. You have a four
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: K disc that has the theatrical cut of The Beyond
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: plus the Composer's cut, which is the same cut, it's
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: just different music. And then you have a Blu ray
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: of the Composer's cut. There is an Extras disc that
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: is just new features, So you have an extra's disc
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: just new features. That's three. Then you have an Archival
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Extras disc which is all the bonus features that were
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: on the Grindhouse releasing Blu ray, and I believe that
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: had some archival extras from some DVD stuff as well.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: Then Disc five you have the Seven Doors of Death,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: which is the original US cut that's on DVD, and
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: then you have the Composer's Cut CD soundtrack, and all
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: of that is housed in a book of ebond replica
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: digibook style in a hard box with a one hundred
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: page book that was exhausting.
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: Just need you guys know it well done.
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: I think you knocked it out of the park. That's
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: pretty good, right, Hell, you're very impressed.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: And you guys watched me. I did not look once.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: It's still sitting here to my lab.
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: Look.
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: Okay, So Chris, you've obviously seen it before, right, Yeah? Okay, Chuck,
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: was this the first time watched for you?
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: This was a first time watch for me?
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: So prior to this, had you watched any of Luccio
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: Fulci's other films.
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: I think I've only saw City of the Living Dead
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: and Zombie prior to this.
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: Okay, what did you think? I'm just curious, like, because
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: we obviously, Chris and I probably have a little bit
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: of like different perspectives on it.
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: And what did you think? Was this what you were
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: expecting with this film? Or it's not really what I
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: was expecting.
- 1:27:48Speaker 4: I've I know it was part of the Gates of
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: Hell trilogy, but I wasn't really expecting a lot of zombies.
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: I thought it was going to be more like a
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: psychological supernatural stuff going on with it. But dude, another
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: great zombie flick.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: Yeah, so it is. So I'll tell you my I
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: think the beyond beginning to end is a perfect Fultu film.
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: It is the You get the exact amount of precursor
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: with that opening prologue, the Sepia toned prologue. But I
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: also want to tell a funny story because I know
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: my wife's gonna hear this, because she's right outside the
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: door right now. So last night I put this on
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: and I'm watching it, and the beginning when it captures
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: do is it Zwike? Is that how you say it?
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: What is that his name? Zwike? I guess I'm going
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: to say it right when they capture him while he's
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: doing that painting, and they bring him down into the
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: basement and they begin whipping him with the chains, which,
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: by the way, thanks to the book, I've learned that
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: the that was shot, so the chains whip and they
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: rip the skin off that was shot by taping the
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: chains to the appliance and then pulling them off, and
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: all all of the blood was actually layered with a
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: layer of clear fluid to give like an extra fluidity
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: to it, like an extra grossness. But here's exactly what happened.
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: My wife comes out of the bathroom and during this scene,
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: and I said something to her and she was like,
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: she's like sh like and she's watching and she's she before,
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: at some point in our relationship had told me about
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: this movie she had watched when she was younger that
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: contained this scene of somebody being whipped with chains and
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: then having acid put the put on them. But in
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: her memory, acid was almost like AsSalt. You know, it's
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: a it's a liquid. And then she asked me if
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: there was a library scene, and I said I couldn't remember,
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: because I genuinely was like, I can't remember if there's
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: a library scene. So I watched half the film last night,
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: turned it off. Today, I get home from the doctors
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: and I put the movie back on, and you get
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: to the Tarantula scene, which is in like a library.
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: I guess that's a library. And we figured out that
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: this was the weird memory that she had of some
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: movie that she probably should not have been watching at
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: the time that she saw it, but this was the movie.
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: So this whole time that this mystery movie that has
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: been that she's been searching for forever kind of unconsciously
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: was Lucia Fultes The Beyond.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: Wow, that's awesome.
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: Yeah, So I just want to know where she initially
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: saw this.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: I think she told me she her brother, I think
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: on with her dad when she was younger and in
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: the room, and she told me she thinks that like
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: at some point her dad had been like, oh, you know,
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: golf to your room, like you know, you shouldn't really
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: be watching like this, you know. And then clearly shortly
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: after the memory of the library scene, you have the
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: tarantula feasting sequence, which you know, I think it's really gnarly,
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: but no, there's just so much cool stuff about this movie. Man,
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: like Emily, Like it's such a cool visual her being blind,
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: and like the way that he shoots that dude. There's
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: a there's a shot that I forgot about that I
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: think is perfect during the tarantula scene, and it's that
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: close up on his eye as the tarantula comes into frame,
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: and it's like slightly tilted as the tarantula comes in.
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: There's so much about this movie.
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: Even Tuck's not doing well.
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: I was squirming that whole scene.
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: Even the visual of hell at the end is so good, yep,
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: so good. Dude, Like this movie, it's only nice. It's
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: like eighty seven minutes. It's very short, it's very to
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: the point it doesn't play around. I actually had to
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: google it because the house the hotel in this was
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: is very similar structurally and location wise to the house
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: and house by the cemetery. Mm. Okay, got like that
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: that same look. But yeah, dude, I love this movie
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: and I think this is a perfect release for it,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: a perfect release.
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: Okay, So you know the scene where they're on the
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: cause White Bridge, m hmm, yeah, yeah, Okay, so I've.
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: I've drove on that a couple of times before.
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: Oh nice it is.
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: I don't mind driving on it, but for anyone who's
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: who's listening, I mean, you can't see shit all around you.
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: All you see is water, it is. I remember I was.
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: I was like way too caffeinated, and we're me and
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: one of my buddies were even all the way down
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: this and I was just like overwhelmed with ways of
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: anxiety being on that And like, obviously I've seen the movie.
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: It's one thing, but now going back and watching this
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: film and seeing that scene, it's so uncomfortable.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: Well, because I think I was reading in the booklet
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: that came with this release that there is a point
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: of that bridge where it's like six there's like it's
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: like just enough either either side is like sixteen miles
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: away so that you cannot see land at one point
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: of it, and that was the point that they shot us.
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: It's terrifying, Like it's I don't know, I don't know
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: what it is. I think it's the idea of just
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: you're you're just in the middle of nowhere, just driving along,
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: and you're you're too like you're too far gone at
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: that point. You have to obviously get to the other side,
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: but that doesn't.
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: Make it any easier.
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: And thank you luciol Folci for basically turning that bridge
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: into a straight up nightmare.
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: My favorite I love that picture of him on the
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: book on that Yeah, So I was going.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: To say my favorite story from the booklet is there
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: was like a friend of a friend that worked for
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: somebody who was able to get that lane closed. So
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: they had one lane that was closed to shoot this
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: for a couple of hours, and it actually like went
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: longer and they had to beg for forgiveness because they
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: they finished shooting it. They were done, but Folci wanted
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: these pictures.
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: That's amazing.
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: We like defied the length of time that they want
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: him on there, just to get that. That now probably
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: most infamous photo of him ever. Mm hmm.
- 1:34:39Speaker 3: It's yeah.
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: This this film, like as far as horror goes, is
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: such a perfect film. Like it's surreal horror. It's filled
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: with gore. The special effects are just insane, dude.
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: The acid pouring on the mother, Oh my god. And
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: then it's like, never in my life that I think
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: I would be afraid of a puddle of acid blood,
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: but as it chases the little girl around this circular morgue,
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: it's terrified.
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I just feel like obviously, like it's just so atmospheric,
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: just very rich in atmosphere. You're obviously dealing with like
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: elements of the occult, like the supernatural aspects of the film.
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: To see, I just like took a few other notes
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: on this. Yeah, I mean, I don't know, there's like
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: what more can you say about this movie, to be honest, Yes,
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: it's incredible.
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: It's pretty perfect, man, and the four K looks stunning,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: Like definitely, it's still very filmic, but it's just so
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: it's so sharp and clean, and like I saw so
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: much more detail in the basement, especially with poor Joe
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: the plumber, that poor guy trying this job man, Yeah,
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: the Martha showing up. Yeah, and like, oh dude, that
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: eye scene with Joda Plumber is so oh my god, how.
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: You just.
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: I don't know what it is with like the like
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: Lucio Foulsci's films, but it's the eye scenes are so
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: incredibly hard to watch that I I just kind of
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: like WinCE.
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: I have to like almost look away a little bit.
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, there. I mean, the Transula scene to me
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: is like the clear winner as far as disturbing because
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: it just keeps going. And you know what's so funny too,
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: You can so clearly tell the difference between the real
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: body and the dummy, but it doesn't lessen the effect
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: because when nose spiders bite and they pull and that
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: skin stretches and that and then it but it rips
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: into the eye and then like you can clearly tell
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: this isn't especially in four K, you know what I mean.
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: Like I was saying this last night, we were watching
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: the burning and I was like, man, you can so
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: much more clear in four K. See the man in
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: the suit during the cropsy burning scene. You can so
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: clearly tell this as a dummy, but it does not
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: lessen the impact of a tarantula climbing into your mouth
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: and biting your tongue. It's still so impact well, and
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: then the but it bites his tongue and then his
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: head it kind of slumps over and all that like thick,
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: gloopy blood pours. Oh gross man.
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: I will say, there's the hospital shootout scene with like
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: the uh, the undead. It kind of reminded me a
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: little bit of Night at the Living Dead when that
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: was going on, where it's just like, you know, the
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: sheer hopelessness. It's basically like a nightmare collapsing in itself,
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: like when it's taken.
- 1:37:58Speaker 3: You know, it's like everything's going down.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: But I think my favorite scene of this entire film
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: is the ending, just because it's just like it's so desolate,
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: so open ended with like okay, where do things go
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: from here?
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: Essentially, and it quiets down. Like the hospital scene is
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: so hectic.
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: Mm hm, very chaotic, it's very contic.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: The music is loud that the music is very rambunctious.
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: Everything is so crazy, and then you have them entering
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: hell and it's quiet and this landscape that we see,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: this very desolate, desaturated landscape with bodies sort of melting
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: into the ground around them. It's quiet, it's so quiet,
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: and they're looking around and they turn around. You cut
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: to another wide shot right, and it's so creative, and
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: then you have the hit of music and the reveal
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: of their eyes whiting over mm hmmm, and it's it's
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: it's genius, man, it's so well done.
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: Spoiler Earliert after the spoiler, I feel like you've given
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: listeners more than enough time to see this movie.
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: I don't. I don't.
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: I feel like we're the spoilers. Aspect is I can't
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: hold back on a movie that came out when was
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: in the eighties?
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: Yeah, was this eighty?
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: Fuck?
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: I know what year this came out to? God, damn it,
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: what was this eighty?
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: Let's see hold on getting to that point in the
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: podcast where I'm.
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: Like eighty one tired.
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say eighty one, but I didn't
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: want to give it earlier than.
- 1:39:48Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: Then, Yes, eighty one, which is crazy to think about
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: because this movie does not look like it comes from man.
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: He had a run like zombies, say the Living Dead
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: US house by the cemetery, like I don't know, wild.
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a beautiful release I don't know if
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: this limited edition is still available. I think no, I
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: think this is I think just the cop the version
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: that we got with the Eye is not available. Let's see.
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: Because they don't really grindhouse releasing stuff doesn't really go
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: out of out of print technically. But let's see.
- 1:40:26Speaker 3: This movie gets my highest recommendation and.
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: Stock is currently sixty six sixty six good price.
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: Taking a page out of Trick or Treats book.
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: It's good. It's a good uh good, uh good good
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: uh price. There. I kept kept like, I just kept
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: saying good, uh good good.
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: Chris is powering down.
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: I know I am winding, dude. My doctor took nine
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: vials of.
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: Blood this morning, Like, oh my god, damn.
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: It was like a Folgy movie in there.
- 1:40:58Speaker 3: The beyonds hold on it.
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: Uh yeah, so uh coming up with Beyond the Blood.
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: While we kind of wrap this up clearly for listeners
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: of this, we're only a couple of days away from
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: Steve's birthday bash. We're gonna have Planet c Hhohn Christian
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: and then we're gonna have a couple of extra guests
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: that Steve does not know about yet, So we're gonna
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: be having a big birthday thing I have. I don't
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: drink too much anymore, but I will have a wildwood
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: Day's Seltzer, who is a listener of the podcast. He
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: owns his own beer company, which is very cool. He
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: did give me with his beer. Hell yeah, so I
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: will be drinking one of those. I will also have
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: a glass of Johnny Walker Green label Age twenty years
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: that I will be enjoying during the episode in celebration
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: of Steve's birthday. Steve, how old are you turning?
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: We'll talk about that off the air, Okay, all.
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: Right, no problem, man, I hope you'll have third birthday.
- 1:41:54Speaker 3: I am turning thirty five.
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: Okay, all right. We also have season one finale, only
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: a couple a month away. It's gonna be end of May.
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: The episode is gonna be releasing. We're gonna be doing
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: a deep dive into Tony Mayleem's of the Burning from
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: nineteen eighty one, which I've already watched. Research has already begun.
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: Super excited to talk about this one with you guys,
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: and then to have Mark on Tales from the Shelf.
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: It's gonna be a good time.
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: Couldn't think of a better way to end this season.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: We did announce our season two slate and we are
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: fully booked up with guests already season two. Only six
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: months into this podcast and we already have a full lineup.
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: Let's go over super quick, just for anybody who got
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: this far into After Hours AU guests of this year,
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: We're gonna be doing the Texas Chainsaw Masker, Toby Hooper's classic,
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: So pumped, super excited for that commentary too, Toby Hooper,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: Gunner Hanson, and cinematographer Daniel Pearl on that track. So
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: very excited about that. September we're gonna be covering. This
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: is a very special episode for me. We're gonna be
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: doing nineteen ninety one's Popcorn, which is an underscene slash
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: our film out of the early nineties, and my wife
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: is gonna be on that episode as a special guest.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: So very excited for that. October we're gonna be diving
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: into Mike Doherty's Trick or Treat and we do have
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: guests for this one, as well as the November episode
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: where we're gonna be talking about Eli Roth's Thanksgiving. We
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: do have guests for those lined up. We're just currently
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: figuring out which guest is gonna be on which one?
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: We have two guests, We're just kind of figuring out
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: who's gonna be on what. And then we're gonna be
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: ending the year and season two with Rob Reiner's Misery,
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: which we will have two fantastic guests on. So very
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: excited for this coming season. Plus we're gonna have some interviews,
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: We're gonna have a bunch of stuff going on in
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: season two like that, I'm very, very very excited for.
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: You know, you got a big season mind up.
- 1:44:06Speaker 4: Yeah, dude, the rest of this year is going to
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: be a hell of a lot of fun.
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, if you look like we've you know,
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: just for transparency, like this podcast I think has really
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: started to kind of like get around a little bit
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: in the community. You know, We've we've had we've had
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: some really good growth here and each episode. I mean,
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: obviously if episode depends on what we're covering, depends on
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: the fan base and stuff, but I've had I've gotten
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: some incredible feedback on the show. Steve bringing you in
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: this season was obviously a perfect addition to the show,
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: So we knew we had to go big for season two,
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: and I think season two also kind of pushes us
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: into some very different directions because, just for transparency, originally
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: we were talking about season two, we were going to
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: do Nosfaratu in December. We were like, oh, it's cold,
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: and then and then, and it was a full all
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: credit to my wife who was like, you guys, when
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: you guys do misery, nobody ever talks about misery. So yes, yes,
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: it's a perfect episode. And our two guests that are
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: gonna be on that episode have very deep personal attachments
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: to that movie. So very excited about that. Oh dude,
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: how could I forget too? In uh in June, we're
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: gonna have the Campground Slasher episode.
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: That's a perfect way to uh round up this episode. Yeah,
- 1:45:37Speaker 3: teasing that.
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: Yeah, we're gonna have a full campground Slash episode. We're
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: gonna be We're gonna be sitting around the fire with
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: our friend Christian again from playing at HH and Garrett
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: from Born to Be Rad both are.
- 1:45:47Speaker 3: Going to be on the show for that and bringing
- 1:45:49Speaker 3: to marshmallows.
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: Marshmallow, bring the chocolate, I'll bring the sticks, all right,
- 1:45:58Speaker 4: nobody's gonna have Graham crackers us.
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: We'll ask Christian, We'll ask christianer Garrett to bring one
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: of them.
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, they got.
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: To incorporate, So you got to bring something. Yeah, you
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: can't come to this party with nothing. It doesn't work
