- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to the Spy Trader podcast !
- 0:04I am your host , Penny Pincher , and it is 2:30 pm on Wednesday , July 29th , 2026 , here on the Pacific coast .
- 0:13We have a lot to talk about in this midafternoon update as the markets are definitely giving us a bumpy ride today .
- 0:19If you have been watching the screens , you know it is a bit of a sea of red out there .
- 0:24We are seeing a significant pullback across all the major indices .
- 0:29The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled over two percent today to close at 51,594 , largely weighed down by industrial companies .
- 0:39Our namesake , the S&P 500 or SPY , declined about one and a half percent to 7,316 , while the Nasdaq , tracked by QQQ , dropped 1.74 percent .
- 0:53So , what is behind this sudden chill in the air ?
- 0:57It is really a combination of two things : a very serious Federal Reserve and rising tensions in the Middle East .
- 1:04The Fed held interest rates steady today between 3.5 and 3.75 percent , but the mood was surprisingly hawkish .
- 1:13We saw a rare divided vote where three officials — Hammack , Kashkari , and Logan — actually wanted to hike rates even further .
- 1:22Fed Chair Kevin Warsh reminded us that with inflation still sitting at 3.5 percent , they are not moving away from that 2 percent goal anytime soon .
- 1:31Meanwhile , hostilities in the Middle East have sent oil prices surging over 6 percent today , with WTI Crude now sitting between 84 and 90 dollars a barrel .
- 1:42This has triggered a big riskoff move .
- 1:45Now , let’s look at the winners and losers .
- 1:48The clear losers today are the tech and semiconductor sectors .
- 1:53The AI correction is in full swing , and big names like Nvidia and AMD are seeing significant profittaking .
- 2:00Even Microsoft reported a huge revenue beat of 90 billion dollars today , but the stock is still volatile because investors are worried about how much they are spending on AI .
- 2:11Industrials also took a hit , specifically Caterpillar , which plunged nearly 7 percent after an analyst downgrade .
- 2:19On the bright side , Energy and Commodities are thriving .
- 2:23Exxon Mobil and Chevron rose along with oil prices , and Gold reached a safehaven high of 4,048 dollars .
- 2:31We also saw Ford as a bright spot , rising over two percent after beating earnings and raising their guidance for the year .
- 2:39Even Warren Buffett seems to be playing it safe , with Berkshire Hathaway holding a record 397 billion dollars in cash .
- 2:47This tells us the big players are in a waitandsee mode .
- 2:50My analysis is that we are seeing a rotation , not a total retreat .
- 2:56Investors are moving from expensive growth stocks into value and defensive sectors .
- 3:01Based on this , here are some concrete recommendations .
- 3:05First , it might be time to reduce your concentration in the Nasdaq100 by trimming some QQQ positions , as the AI trade is currently overextended .
- 3:16Second , consider shifting into defensive growth through the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , or XLV .
- 3:24Companies like Eli Lilly and UnitedHealth offer a great buffer during these downturns .
- 3:30Third , to hedge against the geopolitical drama , look into SPDR Gold Shares , known as GLD , or even longterm bonds through the TLT ETF .
- 3:41Fourth , for those looking for value and cash flow , stocks like Ford or Exxon Mobil are proving resilient .
- 3:49You can also get broad exposure to this through the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund , ticker XLF , as banks continue to benefit from these higher interest rates .
- 3:59Finally , instead of just sticking to the techheavy S&P 500 , consider the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF , or VTI , to capture the smaller companies that have been showing leadership lately .
- 4:12That is it for this update !
- 4:13Stay calm , watch your stops , and I will be back in a few hours with more insights .
- 4:19This is Penny Pincher , signing off .
