- 0:01Jennifer Davis: Welcome to The Best of Redmond.
- 0:03Jennifer Davis: I'm Jennifer Davis
- 0:04Dan Schulz: And I'm Dan Schultz, and this is Redmond's twice weekly newsletter and podcast about all of the amazing things happening in and around Redmond for the next seven days.
- 0:15Dan Schulz: If you've ever woken up and wondered why you have a severe lack of trees on your property, this is good news.
- 0:22Dan Schulz: Redmond is putting 750 more trees into the community through its second annual tree giveaway.
- 0:29Dan Schulz: The program is aimed at getting trees into the hands of residents, schools, nonprofits, HOAs, faith organizations, groups, and small businesses inside Redmond city limits.
- 0:42Dan Schulz: The city is also pairing the giveaway with information about choosing, planting, and caring for trees.
- 0:48Dan Schulz: The application window has already closed for this round, so there's nothing to sign up for now.
- 0:53Dan Schulz: But if you missed it, keep an eye out for the next giveaway because 750 trees is a lot of shade coming to Redmond,...,
- 1:02Jennifer Davis: Here's something different for your Saturday.
- 1:05Jennifer Davis: Formosa Sound, Seattle's first Taiwan music festival, takes over Redmond Downtown Park on August 29th.
- 1:13Jennifer Davis: It's completely free and all ages with Taiwanese musicians, DJs, food, makers, and community groups spread throughout the park.
- 1:23Jennifer Davis: The lineup includes artists from Taiwan along with local performers, so this isn't just background music while you grab lunch.
- 1:31Jennifer Davis: It's a full afternoon and evening festival.
- 1:35Jennifer Davis: Bring the family and a blanket and plan to wander around for a while.
- 1:41Dan Schulz: The Beach Boys are playing Marymoor live Sunday on August 30th.
- 1:45Dan Schulz: Doors opening at 4:30 PM, and the show starts at 6:30.
- 1:50Dan Schulz: The concert is at the Marymoor Amphitheatre and is part of the Sounds of Summer Tour.
- 1:55Dan Schulz: So yes, you're gonna hear the songs you already know.
- 1:58Dan Schulz: The show is also tied to the 60th anniversary of Pet Sounds, which gives longtime fans another reason to go.
- 2:06Dan Schulz: If you're headed out, give yourself plenty of time for parking and getting through the gate
- 2:14Jennifer Davis: Saturday morning is British Car Day at Redmond Town Center, part of their regular Exotics at Redmond Town Center gathering.
- 2:22Jennifer Davis: It runs August 29th from 9:00 to 11:00.
- 2:26Jennifer Davis: Expect Jaguars, Land Rovers, Mini Coopers, and other British cars mixed into the lineup.
- 2:33Jennifer Davis: You don't need to know anything about cars to enjoy this one.
- 2:37Jennifer Davis: Just walk around, look at the cars, and find the one that makes you want to start searching Craigslist afterwards.
- 2:44Jennifer Davis: It's free to wander around, so grab coffee and make a quick Saturday morning stop
- 2:51Dan Schulz: If you've always wanted to try line dancing but didn't know where to start, here's something for you.
- 2:57Dan Schulz: Line dancing with Eva Marie happens Tuesday, August 25th at the Redmond Senior and Community Center.

- 3:22Speaker 3: Now here's something most homeowners don't think about.
- 3:26Speaker 3: You could have a water leak right now and not even know it.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Underground leaks don't show up like a burst pipe.
- 3:33Speaker 3: There's no water on the floor.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Your water bill just quietly creeps up month after month until one day you're paying double and wondering what the heck happened.

- 4:01Speaker 3: So if your water bill's been climbing or your meter's spinning when nothing is running, then give Lincoln and his team a call at two five three eight zero zero one four one two, or visit them at simplyleakdetection.biz.
- 4:20Speaker 3: That message brought to you by Simply Leak Detection
- 4:24Dan Schulz: If you've got a little one who needs to burn off some energy, drop-in indoor play is happening Thursday, August 27th from 10:00 AM to noon at the Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village.
- 4:37Dan Schulz: It's designed for kids age zero to six with toys and space for kids to play while adults hang out nearby.
- 4:45Dan Schulz: An adult needs to stay with the child, so this isn't a drop-off childcare.
- 4:49Dan Schulz: It's just an easy way to get the kid out of the house for a couple hours.
- 4:53Dan Schulz: Bring the kids, let them play, and call it a morning
- 4:58Jennifer Davis: Post Doc Brewing has trivia Wednesday, August 26th from 8:00 to 9:45.
- 5:05Jennifer Davis: This is your classic team trivia night, which means somebody knows every movie ever made, somebody knows sports, and somebody else remembers useless facts that suddenly become extremely important for one question.
- 5:18Jennifer Davis: Grab a few friends and make a night of it.
- 5:21Jennifer Davis: The late start makes this more of an evening outing than a quick stop after work.
- 5:25Jennifer Davis: Bring your smartest friends and maybe the friend who's really good at educated guesses
- 5:32Dan Schulz: Get this.
- 5:32Dan Schulz: The Jerry Baker Memorial Velodrome is putting a corgi race into its Friday night racing program on August 28th.
- 5:41Dan Schulz: Do you understand how huge this is?
- 5:45Dan Schulz: How incredible this is?
- 5:47Dan Schulz: Racing corgis.
- 5:51Dan Schulz: The race runs from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Marymoor Park in Redmond.
- 5:54Dan Schulz: There's also the free Kiddie Kilo for kids.
- 5:57Dan Schulz: So this is one of those events where adults can watch racing while the kids get a chance to hit the track themselves.
- 6:05Dan Schulz: Spectator admission is $5 donation and kids get in free.
- 6:10Dan Schulz: Bring the family and definitely bring your phone for the corgis.
- 6:13Dan Schulz: Why do you have to bring your phone?
- 6:15Dan Schulz: Oh, I get it.
- 6:15Dan Schulz: In case they wanna call their friends.
- 6:17Dan Schulz: Got it
- 6:21Jennifer Davis: If you've never watched track cycling, Wednesday night is a good time to see what the velodrome is all about.
- 6:28Jennifer Davis: Wednesday night racing runs August 26th from 7:00 to 10:00 at the Jerry Baker Memorial Velodrome.
- 6:35Jennifer Davis: The card includes chariot races, short scratch races, and keirin heats and finals.
- 6:42Jennifer Davis: Not sure what any of those are.
- 6:43Dan Schulz: quick question.
- 6:44Dan Schulz: Do you know if the chariots are in fact being pulled by corgis?
- 6:50Jennifer Davis: Spectators get in free, and parking at Marymoor is a dollar.
- 6:54Jennifer Davis: This is real bike racing, not a leisurely ride around the park.
- 6:58Jennifer Davis: Grab a seat, watch the riders fly around the track, and see why Redmond has such a long cycling connection
- 7:06Dan Schulz: All right, it is time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond.
- 7:15Dan Schulz: Today's question: What kind of building did famous local sculptor Dudley Carter live and work in while creating his wood carvings?
- 7:27Dan Schulz: Was it A, Haida-style longhouse, a converted schoolhouse, a traditional log cabin, or a barn-style workshop?
- 7:40Dan Schulz: And the time starts now.
- 7:44Jennifer Davis: Oh boy.
- 7:45Jennifer Davis: Uh, converted schoolhouse sounds pretty fun.
- 7:48Jennifer Davis: I mean, I don't know when he worked.
- 7:51Jennifer Davis: Like, would it be a log cabin?
- 7:53Jennifer Davis: Uh, it doesn't say the dates when he lived there.
- 7:55Jennifer Davis: I- maybe he's, like, real old-timer.
- 7:58Jennifer Davis: So I'm gonna guess C, traditional log cabin
- 8:01Dan Schulz: Why would you say he's an old-timer?
- 8:03Dan Schulz: Is it because his name Dudley
- 8:07Jennifer Davis: Maybe a little.
- 8:09Dan Schulz: Well, Jennifer, I've got exciting news for you.
- 8:12Dan Schulz: The answer is A, a Haida-style longhouse
- 8:16Jennifer Davis: Cool
- 8:17Dan Schulz: Well, you were wrong, but it is cool.
- 8:19Dan Schulz: Dudley Carter lived and worked in a Haida-style carving studio and longhouse.
- 8:24Dan Schulz: He used the space as both his home and his workshop, creating wood sculptures on land near Bellevue Redmond Road.
- 8:31Dan Schulz: The property later became part of the Microsoft campus, which makes the story even more unusual.
- 8:38Dan Schulz: Before all those office buildings were there, a sculptor was living and carving in a longhouse on the land
- 8:45Jennifer Davis: Very cool Here's one we've been hearing about, but there's a big unconfirmed attached to it.
- 8:59Jennifer Davis: Word is a small live music room with about 80 seats, no dinner service, just drinks and real live sound, is being developed somewhere in the old Redmond corridor.
- 9:11Jennifer Davis: The person behind it apparently booked shows in Capitol Hill for years and wants to bring that kind of room to the East Side.
- 9:18Jennifer Davis: We haven't confirmed that the room is actually happening, who is behind it, or exactly where it would be.
- 9:23Jennifer Davis: So here's the question: if this is real, where do you think they're putting it?
- 9:27Jennifer Davis: If you've got a guess or have heard something, head over to our Facebook page at facebook.com/bestofredmond and drop it in the Rumor Mill guesses post
- 9:41Dan Schulz: And while you're at our Facebook page, you might as well find the post called Your Picks and drop your vote in the comments to this question.
- 9:48Dan Schulz: We wanna know where you think the best playground in Redmond is
- 9:52Jennifer Davis: If you've enjoyed this podcast, you're gonna love our companion newsletter.
- 9:57Jennifer Davis: Find it at bestofredmond.com and we'll see you in the next one
- 10:02Dan Schulz: Or maybe before then, walking around Redmond.
