Latest / Medsolve Dynamics / AI Procurement Accountability in Healthcare: 3 Questions Before You Sign
Transcript
- Yoel Bakas: If you have signed off on an AI or software purchase in the past 12 months or you are about to, this is worth 60 seconds of your time. I am seeing something happen more often than I expected. A program approves an AI solution. The vendor demo looked great. Someone on the clinical team championed it. And then the purchase goes through. Six months later, the tool is installed, but the workflow has not changed. And the person who approved the purchase is explaining to the CFO why the ROI has not materialized. That is not a technology failure. It is a procurement failure. Most AI being sold into radiation oncology right now claims to improve workflow. not reimbursement. When there's no reimbursement lift or measurable operating improvement, it is very difficult to call the tool an investment. It's a cost center dressed up as an investment. Three questions should have been asked before signature. The first is what does adoption actually require from the existing staff? The second is what happens to throughput during the transition and adoption. And the third is who is responsible if the outcome metrics don't move in 12 months. If no one asks those three questions, the risk is not that the tool doesn't work. The risk is that no one mapped out what it costs to make it work. I spent 20 years on the vendor side of these conversations. I know what the prep room looks like before your meeting. That's why I sit on your side of the table now.
