- 0:30Speaker 3: Real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 3: begin on Let's talk.
- 0:37Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, Miss Odie is in here
- 0:41Speaker 4: taking photos. Sorry, so she has kind of got us
- 0:46Speaker 4: off to a different start here. Well, first of all,
- 0:50Speaker 4: I'd like to say I hope that both of you
- 0:52Speaker 4: had a great holiday with your families and friends and
- 0:55Speaker 4: all that good stuff.
- 0:56Speaker 5: Uh, and all of our listeners the same to you.
- 0:59Speaker 5: Uh man, there's uh, we're gonna do somewhat of a
- 1:05Speaker 5: recap of some of the shows that we've that we've done,
- 1:09Speaker 5: and one of the one of the interesting ones to
- 1:15Speaker 5: me was Sterling Well hold of them. Let's let's set
- 1:18Speaker 5: it up a little bit far as just like this
- 1:20Speaker 5: year has been just amazing as far as the guests
- 1:24Speaker 5: that we were able to have on It's true, true,
- 1:26Speaker 5: I mean, just we're not going to be able to
- 1:29Speaker 5: cover everybody, right, but just far as just from Darryl
- 1:32Speaker 5: Talley to Kirk Warner to Sterling Sharp and Christen Mark
- 1:35Speaker 5: just all the amazing conversations that we were able to have.
- 1:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean it was just so wonderful to have
- 1:42Speaker 6: those those people, some were you know, in studios, some
- 1:45Speaker 6: called in. But but just to have the experience to
- 1:47Speaker 6: sit down and talk with these athletes and and and
- 1:51Speaker 6: just that their life experiences, what they're doing now you
- 1:55Speaker 6: know their past. You know, I just want to say
- 1:58Speaker 6: thank you personally to both of you and Carl for
- 2:01Speaker 6: you know, giving me the opportunity to come on to
- 2:03Speaker 6: this this podcast. Matt Murphy, he's been a great producer.
- 2:07Speaker 6: Dale Cooper's been nice. They b c HS has you know,
- 2:09Speaker 6: been great to us as well, and the audience of course.
- 2:12Speaker 6: But but yeah, this this year to me, I think,
- 2:15Speaker 6: I think we just had some phenomenal guests.
- 2:18Speaker 5: And you know, and one of the one of the
- 2:20Speaker 5: and I'm going to go back to Sterling because I thought,
- 2:26Speaker 5: how we how you think we would get guests? You know,
- 2:30Speaker 5: everybody can kind of assume, well you probably call up
- 2:32Speaker 5: somebody and see if they'll do come on and all
- 2:35Speaker 5: that kind of stuff. And the interesting component about Sterling
- 2:40Speaker 5: was he's in West He's coming through West Virginia and
- 2:44Speaker 5: calls and says, hey, I want to be on a
- 2:46Speaker 5: show from the Hall of.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Fame, from the Hall of Fame Canton, right from Canon
- 2:52Speaker 4: being inducted.
- 2:53Speaker 5: Yes, we we end up being his first interview outside
- 2:59Speaker 5: of if it was a Canton, if he had an
- 3:03Speaker 5: interview at Campton. We were the next actually interview that
- 3:08Speaker 5: he had.
- 3:09Speaker 6: I mean the gold Jacket, I mean, I think he
- 3:10Speaker 6: just took the exactly and.
- 3:13Speaker 5: That was my first time to ever seeing one.
- 3:15Speaker 4: And just to put it in context, you know, Stolle Sharp,
- 3:17Speaker 4: he's not you know, he's not a visitor here. You know,
- 3:20Speaker 4: this is somewhere he's been plenty of times. And he's
- 3:23Speaker 4: just so gracious. He can you know, if you're watching
- 3:26Speaker 4: him afar, he can come off one way, but he
- 3:28Speaker 4: is a very gracious and humble person and it was
- 3:32Speaker 4: just great to get to know him a little bit better.
- 3:34Speaker 5: Well. And again to your point, he is really a
- 3:40Speaker 5: nice guy and I think he works hard to try
- 3:42Speaker 5: to come across like he might not be, but he's
- 3:45Speaker 5: you know, again, here's a guy Who's coming to West
- 3:48Speaker 5: Virginia State when I'm coaching and working with the players,
- 3:53Speaker 5: like he's a coach and buying a you and buying.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Uniforms, buying uniforms, sponsoring us when we would go to
- 4:00Speaker 4: Charles Southern.
- 4:02Speaker 5: Hotel and food, I mean, who does that?
- 4:05Speaker 4: And we're going to try to get him another Hall
- 4:07Speaker 4: of Fame Jack here locally this year, so that that's
- 4:11Speaker 4: in the works now, But it was just, I don't know,
- 4:14Speaker 4: it was just so amazing to watch the ceremony and
- 4:18Speaker 4: the inductions and then like the next Monday, he's here.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:21Speaker 6: It was kind of surreal, wasn't it. And You're right,
- 4:24Speaker 6: he's got that tough persona that he likes to put
- 4:26Speaker 6: out there, but really he would give you the shirt
- 4:28Speaker 6: off his back.
- 4:28Speaker 7: I mean he is.
- 4:29Speaker 6: He's got the kindest heart, one of the kindest hearts
- 4:31Speaker 6: I've ever met in my life, so.
- 4:34Speaker 5: He has said to me. And I did not know
- 4:37Speaker 5: this at all and have never even thought about it.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Our relationships started at the Pro Bowl and I had
- 4:45Speaker 5: gone into Pro Bowl a year before him, and I
- 4:48Speaker 5: was going on my second one and he was just
- 4:51Speaker 5: coming in on his first one, and so I was
- 4:54Speaker 5: like hey, you know, because I didn't know him personally,
- 4:57Speaker 5: but I knew we played against them, So I was like, hey, man,
- 5:00Speaker 5: come on with us. We're gonna go go over here
- 5:02Speaker 5: and go do some stuff over there and all that
- 5:03Speaker 5: kind of stuff. And to this day, I had no
- 5:07Speaker 5: idea really that that was that impactful. Yeah, for him
- 5:13Speaker 5: to to think and again for him to just to say, Okay,
- 5:16Speaker 5: I'm going to the I'm gonna I'm gonna drive back
- 5:18Speaker 5: through West Virginia. And here's the other thing. He had
- 5:21Speaker 5: to know the time. He knew the time that we
- 5:23Speaker 5: were gonna be on, and he got here.
- 5:27Speaker 4: To do the show on time, to do the show.
- 5:29Speaker 4: I'm surprised he drove. That was like, I was like,
- 5:30Speaker 4: you're driving. I thought he would be there. But and
- 5:33Speaker 4: I would also say like, if you're a younger listener,
- 5:38Speaker 4: if you're a parent, were young you know people who
- 5:40Speaker 4: liked football, man, go watch Thirling sharp football highlights.
- 5:44Speaker 5: He was a total receiver. And I'm you're a packer family.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Remember I'm talking about had great hands, great route running,
- 5:52Speaker 4: could block, had acceleration. You know, he was just everything
- 5:58Speaker 4: you looked for in a rosceiver. I mean, had he
- 6:01Speaker 4: not got Hurt had maybe extra five or six seven years,
- 6:05Speaker 4: we would be talking Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, Sterling, Sharp
- 6:08Speaker 4: Turrell on that that would be the you know, the
- 6:11Speaker 4: five receivers that we would be discussed. Well, because he
- 6:13Speaker 4: was in the he's in the he he was in
- 6:15Speaker 4: the Rice conversation when he started coming into the wash.
- 6:21Speaker 4: And he never really got to play with Brett Farr.
- 6:23Speaker 4: I think they played like what one or two seasons.
- 6:25Speaker 4: It wasn't making it wasn't it wasn't a lot. So
- 6:28Speaker 4: if he if he actually got to play with you know,
- 6:30Speaker 4: Hall of Fame quarterback man, I cannot imagine where his
- 6:34Speaker 4: numbers would be out right now.
- 6:35Speaker 5: And I've said this before. One of the most interesting
- 6:39Speaker 5: things to me about Sterling was him as silly as
- 6:43Speaker 5: he can be. He's doing that on the NFL Sunday game.
- 6:50Speaker 5: He is being that stupid, silly, crazy guy on the field,
- 6:56Speaker 5: Like I'm sitting there, I'm locked in, I'm trying to
- 6:58Speaker 5: cover him, and he's sitting there and he's talking to
- 7:00Speaker 5: me like, don't worry about it. I'm not getting the ball.
- 7:03Speaker 5: They're not they're not coming to me. It's gonna be
- 7:05Speaker 5: a run. And I'm trying to tell my other guys
- 7:08Speaker 5: don't talk to him, don't be around him, because he's
- 7:10Speaker 5: gonna laugh. He's gonna laugh you into the end zone.
- 7:14Speaker 5: And to this day, of all of the things that
- 7:19Speaker 5: impressed me is that how do you play in the
- 7:23Speaker 5: NFL and have that much fun in the midst of
- 7:28Speaker 5: a game?
- 7:29Speaker 6: Well, he had fun with us here, so fun.
- 7:33Speaker 5: He knows how to have love.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Talking some some clips so you can hear a little
- 7:38Speaker 4: bit the interview that we did.
- 7:40Speaker 5: This dude is laughing and joking.
- 7:43Speaker 4: He's telling us in the huddle, why y'all even in
- 7:45Speaker 4: the huddle, y'all y'all just playing man the man in blitzing.
- 7:50Speaker 4: And I would I mean, I literally, I literally would
- 7:56Speaker 4: have to tell the dvs like, don't talk to him,
- 7:59Speaker 4: don't talk because he's gonna talk you into a touchdown.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Thomas would talk.
- 8:08Speaker 8: Late, Chris Dovean's okay, they're the highlight.
- 8:16Speaker 5: To talk to me a little bit. They're not gonna
- 8:17Speaker 5: be on the highlight. That's gonna be us.
- 8:19Speaker 8: And so you know, and that's the thing about enjoying
- 8:22Speaker 8: what you do.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Do you think that I hate to interrupt, but do
- 8:26Speaker 4: you think the fact that you you could enjoy it
- 8:29Speaker 4: so much. Had a lot to do with how great,
- 8:33Speaker 4: because I'm not gonna call it, notna call it good,
- 8:35Speaker 4: but how great?
- 8:35Speaker 8: You know, I think what it is, Carl is like
- 8:38Speaker 8: I said about the destruction of sports.
- 8:41Speaker 5: You gotta be a certain way.
- 8:43Speaker 8: You gotta do it a certain way, you gotta understand
- 8:47Speaker 8: it a certain way. And I don't know if I
- 8:50Speaker 8: will live long enough for talk enough to be able
- 8:53Speaker 8: to explain to people that the phrase your best is
- 8:57Speaker 8: good enough actually is. And so when I was enjoying
- 9:02Speaker 8: playing football at the professional level, you know, my brother
- 9:06Speaker 8: talked trash, and his trash.
- 9:08Speaker 5: Talking with you did I talked trash.
- 9:11Speaker 8: But I only talk to you because, man, we got
- 9:14Speaker 8: two and a half three hours to get through this thing.
- 9:16Speaker 8: I want you to come out healthy. I want to
- 9:18Speaker 8: come out healthy. You practice this week. I practiced this week.
- 9:22Speaker 8: In certain situations, we're going to have to go up
- 9:25Speaker 8: against each other for a pass or a block, And
- 9:29Speaker 8: I want your best just like you want mine. Well,
- 9:32Speaker 8: guess what, that don't make you a bad guy if
- 9:34Speaker 8: you win. You know that, you know so I always
- 9:39Speaker 8: wanted it to be. I'm doing what I want to do.
- 9:42Speaker 8: If you're not doing what you want to do at
- 9:44Speaker 8: the level you want to do it at. It's not
- 9:46Speaker 8: my fault, and so I always tried to enjoy whether
- 9:50Speaker 8: it was in Chicago or Minnesota or Tampa. I wanted
- 9:55Speaker 8: to play, enjoy playing, and my best was good enough.
- 10:01Speaker 8: I did my job better than anyone, because you only
- 10:03Speaker 8: get an opinion if you're paying bills or you.
- 10:09Speaker 5: Yeah, man, how great was that?
- 10:10Speaker 4: And to that point, you know, that's probably just my
- 10:14Speaker 4: thinking about what he said. As far as enjoying the
- 10:18Speaker 4: sport while you have the opportunity to, that's probably my
- 10:22Speaker 4: biggest regret, you know, being a collegiate for But I
- 10:24Speaker 4: don't think I had fun enough. I don't think I
- 10:27Speaker 4: enjoyed it in the moment enough. So I think that's
- 10:30Speaker 4: why because he talked about we asked him specifically about
- 10:34Speaker 4: his career ending early. I think he only played seven
- 10:36Speaker 4: or eight seasons, and he essentially had no regrets about it.
- 10:41Speaker 4: And I think that's why, just because he enjoyed it,
- 10:43Speaker 4: and you could just see through the conversation, you can
- 10:45Speaker 4: feel through the conversation that you know he was genuine
- 10:49Speaker 4: in that sentiment, and.
- 10:50Speaker 6: I loved all his little sayings he had He always
- 10:52Speaker 6: had this little saying like your best is good enough.
- 10:54Speaker 6: I mean, he he had these little quotes that just
- 10:57Speaker 6: kind of, you know, kept you, keep you grounded and
- 11:00Speaker 6: make you realize that it's about enjoying the moment, doing
- 11:03Speaker 6: your best, but being able to enjoy the moment.
- 11:07Speaker 5: And I find it interesting too that he really never
- 11:13Speaker 5: actually ever patted himself on the back for really anything.
- 11:20Speaker 5: And he he really did change a lot what happened
- 11:26Speaker 5: with the package when he got there, Like, I mean,
- 11:29Speaker 5: he changed how that program was going, and he became
- 11:34Speaker 5: like he just all of a sudden just starts showing up.
- 11:36Speaker 5: And now you're talking about Jerry Rice and Sterling Sharp.
- 11:39Speaker 5: You know, he's in he's starting to become that same
- 11:43Speaker 5: name as those what we used to call the superstars.
- 11:46Speaker 5: He was that guy, and an unfortunate piece to that,
- 11:50Speaker 5: you know, obviously was the career ending injury, but as
- 11:56Speaker 5: him having him here, I don't know if I could
- 12:01Speaker 5: be more thankful, you know, to come here with He
- 12:10Speaker 5: could have called me, Yeah, he could have done anything
- 12:12Speaker 5: and said, hey man, what time is your show? Blah
- 12:15Speaker 5: blah blah blah. You know I can be on it
- 12:17Speaker 5: because I'm on my way home.
- 12:19Speaker 4: He ain't say nothing could have gave us a superstar treatment.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Yes he didn't. He didn't. He didn't want any of that.
- 12:25Speaker 5: Like he just came, just showed up, popped up, sent
- 12:30Speaker 5: in a chair, and was ready to go.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Definitely an awesome moment. And I think, you know, the
- 12:34Speaker 4: transition from you know, the Hall of Famer, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 4: going to another football player again who I think embodies
- 12:44Speaker 4: sort of the heart and probably our intent of the show.
- 12:48Speaker 4: It's Kurt Warner, a guy who is an absolute legend
- 12:53Speaker 4: from you know, a very rural area of West Virginia,
- 12:56Speaker 4: who I would say probably most people don't even know
- 13:00Speaker 4: anything about, you know, just from his time at Poneville,
- 13:05Speaker 4: his time at Penn State, and obviously his time with
- 13:07Speaker 4: the Seattle Seahawks being an NFL running back. You know,
- 13:12Speaker 4: to me, this is kind of what we did. This
- 13:16Speaker 4: why this show started was to honor guys like him.
- 13:20Speaker 4: He has the ward named after him for the best
- 13:22Speaker 4: high school running back. But again, most people probably just
- 13:25Speaker 4: don't even know who he is. And I think for
- 13:27Speaker 4: us for him to be on the show and for
- 13:30Speaker 4: him to allow us to highlight who he is.
- 13:33Speaker 5: Was big and to that Hollis and I want to
- 13:38Speaker 5: thank you for even saying it that way, because Kurt
- 13:43Speaker 5: is not you know, he's not the guy that's going
- 13:47Speaker 5: to go out and chase any kind of attention. It's
- 13:51Speaker 5: just not who he is. And I can remember, you know,
- 13:55Speaker 5: meeting him at the North South and he had gotten
- 13:59Speaker 5: you know, the the best player in the state of
- 14:01Speaker 5: West Virginia, you know, and he was the Kennedy and
- 14:06Speaker 5: and you know Robert, who was my Robert Alexander, who
- 14:09Speaker 5: was my idol. He he was. There was a conversation
- 14:15Speaker 5: about who's the best between those two, and you know,
- 14:19Speaker 5: and you know, I was, you know, it's hard for
- 14:21Speaker 5: me not to pick Robert. But the thing about Kurt
- 14:24Speaker 5: was he he came, he came to me and Eddie
- 14:30Speaker 5: ray dyas and connected with us as if we had
- 14:36Speaker 5: been playing ball together all through high school. And and
- 14:43Speaker 5: it was it was amazing and and and I'm going
- 14:46Speaker 5: to tell this story. And I don't know what clip
- 14:48Speaker 5: we might play if we if we play on a
- 14:50Speaker 5: clip of him, but I can remember watching him the
- 14:54Speaker 5: first day that he actually got out in the shoulder
- 14:57Speaker 5: pads in the North South game, and he he was
- 15:00Speaker 5: coming in he I think he came in like maybe
- 15:02Speaker 5: like the third day and Hollis you know, I don't
- 15:08Speaker 5: know if you've ever seen, you know, anything, any clips
- 15:11Speaker 5: of Gael Sayers or that was the first person that
- 15:16Speaker 5: came to my mind when I was watching him praise man.
- 15:19Speaker 5: I was like, oh, my goodness, you.
- 15:22Speaker 6: Knew you were witnessing greatness, right, I knew.
- 15:25Speaker 5: I knew that. Man, I'm getting ready to play in
- 15:27Speaker 5: the North South game with one of the best players
- 15:32Speaker 5: ever that I've ever physically seen.
- 15:35Speaker 4: And again, to put it in context, if you have
- 15:38Speaker 4: not watched clips, please go watch clips of this man
- 15:42Speaker 4: in college. Specifically, this was a guy who played at Pineville,
- 15:47Speaker 4: a like I think double a school in pine We're
- 15:54Speaker 4: talking about a tiny, tiny school from Pineville, West Virginia, Mullins,
- 15:58Speaker 4: West Virginia in that area where Christy marsh from we'll
- 16:02Speaker 4: talk about her in a minute. But and then gets
- 16:05Speaker 4: a full scholarship to pen Say and again Penn State
- 16:09Speaker 4: when Penn State was pen Sate. We're talking about like
- 16:12Speaker 4: Ohio State depending in like context. Now it's like going
- 16:16Speaker 4: from you know, independent high school Shady Springs and you're
- 16:19Speaker 4: going to Ohio State and being a starting running back, right,
- 16:24Speaker 4: out of running at a shoot like I think his
- 16:26Speaker 4: third play like took a kick off back to the house.
- 16:29Speaker 4: I mean, we're talking about elite athleticism, jumping from the
- 16:33Speaker 4: smallest of rural areas in West Virginia to the height
- 16:37Speaker 4: of the heights.
- 16:39Speaker 6: And to accomplish all that. Hollis to your point, he
- 16:42Speaker 6: to me when he came across as just humble. You know,
- 16:47Speaker 6: there's nothing flashy about him. He had a conversation with us,
- 16:51Speaker 6: it was, you know, very just like somebody you'd have
- 16:54Speaker 6: a conversation with at a coffee shop. You know, he
- 16:57Speaker 6: didn't let you know that he did all these great
- 17:00Speaker 6: until you asked him. We had to question him to
- 17:02Speaker 6: bring out all that information about what he did at Pennstad.
- 17:05Speaker 5: See, I be.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Thinking, that's a problem. Got man, let it hang out. Man,
- 17:11Speaker 4: tell us what's what it is? And and and and and.
- 17:16Speaker 5: And you know, I think to your I get what
- 17:21Speaker 5: you're saying, Hollins, But but people don't hear it that
- 17:26Speaker 5: way when you say it. They just they they just
- 17:30Speaker 5: don't hear.
- 17:32Speaker 4: And you know, and no, no, no, no, no, that's
- 17:36Speaker 4: but that's that's a great example.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Why is it that it's okay for Dion and it's
- 17:43Speaker 5: not okay for me. I can't if I was at it,
- 17:47Speaker 5: but I'm just saying like it's just it's just it
- 17:49Speaker 5: just saddens me, like we just don't know these like
- 17:53Speaker 5: these great like giants of you know, at and athleticism
- 17:57Speaker 5: let me and and I didn't and I don't think
- 17:59Speaker 5: I asked this in the show.
- 18:00Speaker 4: Did y'all play against each other when y'all were in
- 18:02Speaker 4: the NFL? Yes, okay, y we wish you had attack him.
- 18:07Speaker 4: And look, we are laying on the turf laughing because
- 18:12Speaker 4: I'm on top of him and he's down on the
- 18:15Speaker 4: pal and he's looking at me and he is laughing.
- 18:18Speaker 4: We are just we're laughing because we are thinking we
- 18:23Speaker 4: went through the North South and I don't even think
- 18:25Speaker 4: I ever tackled him at the North South game because
- 18:27Speaker 4: I don't think, you know, probably like that.
- 18:30Speaker 5: For the South and so and he killed the North,
- 18:34Speaker 5: you know. And now all of a sudden, I'm we're
- 18:38Speaker 5: in the league and I'm laying on the pal, laying
- 18:41Speaker 5: on top of him, and he's laughing. He's laughing because
- 18:45Speaker 5: he sees me before I even I mean, I know
- 18:47Speaker 5: it was him, but I'm not thinking about laughing, and
- 18:49Speaker 5: then I can't help it, but I'm laughing.
- 18:51Speaker 4: We're sitting there laughing again NFL during a game. Two
- 18:58Speaker 4: guys from West Virginia playing in the North South and
- 19:01Speaker 4: we are on the football field in the National Football League.
- 19:09Speaker 6: For a minute.
- 19:12Speaker 9: I mean, there's always a chip on one shoulder, uh,
- 19:16Speaker 9: and there's you've got to have a reason to say,
- 19:20Speaker 9: you know, I can play at this level. And I
- 19:23Speaker 9: believe that I could play at that level from day one.
- 19:27Speaker 9: But it wasn't just because I you know, it wasn't
- 19:34Speaker 9: something that I thought about with regards to well and
- 19:38Speaker 9: my second guessing what I can do and what I
- 19:42Speaker 9: can't do. I felt as though I could play there,
- 19:44Speaker 9: I belong there, and now it was just an opportunity
- 19:48Speaker 9: to get out there and chill with That's really You've
- 19:52Speaker 9: got to prove it to a certain degree because nobody's
- 19:55Speaker 9: going to give you anything, especially at that level when
- 19:58Speaker 9: you've got five six I mean, I remember going into
- 20:01Speaker 9: our running back room and they had the you know,
- 20:04Speaker 9: the guys on the board my freshman year, and there
- 20:07Speaker 9: was like seven eight guys on that list, and I
- 20:11Speaker 9: remember seeing that and I was at the bottom of
- 20:13Speaker 9: the list, and it wasn't because my last name was arn.
- 20:16Speaker 9: It said I was on the bottom of that list.
- 20:19Speaker 9: That's thinking myself, Okay, you know what, well, when I
- 20:22Speaker 9: get out of this camp, I'm not gonna be on
- 20:24Speaker 9: the bottom of this list when I finish here at
- 20:26Speaker 9: this camp. But that's what I was saying to myself.
- 20:29Speaker 9: But I was determined not to be on that bottom
- 20:32Speaker 9: of that list when it was all sitting done.
- 20:34Speaker 4: And see, that's what that's And that's the conversations I
- 20:37Speaker 4: love to have because again he's talking his ish in
- 20:41Speaker 4: his way when you talk about I'm big mindpower science
- 20:44Speaker 4: and you, you know, implement those beliefs in yourself and
- 20:48Speaker 4: it can really carry you because he could have came
- 20:50Speaker 4: into Penn State with the same talent, the same ability, everything,
- 20:54Speaker 4: but if he had doubt in his mind and he
- 20:56Speaker 4: didn't believe in himself, he probably would have remained on
- 20:59Speaker 4: the bottom of that list. And I just love stories
- 21:01Speaker 4: like that, particularly a guy coming from West Virginia, a
- 21:04Speaker 4: guy coming into the quote unquote big city or on
- 21:07Speaker 4: the big stage, same thing with you and just having
- 21:10Speaker 4: that belief above anything else, because it is the belief
- 21:14Speaker 4: that's going to carry you not necessarily your work, not
- 21:16Speaker 4: necessarily even your talent.
- 21:18Speaker 5: I mean, that's part, but you gotta have a belief
- 21:20Speaker 5: on top of all that. And I think, and I think,
- 21:25Speaker 5: what's hard for a younger athlete to hear that clip
- 21:31Speaker 5: and not hear it as maybe arrogant or something like that,
- 21:37Speaker 5: and and and not see it as what it is.
- 21:41Speaker 5: It's it's an individual confidence that you're saying that you
- 21:44Speaker 5: knew that you could play at that level. Now you
- 21:50Speaker 5: get you get the chance, and you do it, and
- 21:53Speaker 5: you do it exceptionally. You didn't lie, you know what
- 21:57Speaker 5: I'm saying, that belief. And I think most of the time,
- 22:03Speaker 5: I think the young athlete says something, but maybe he
- 22:10Speaker 5: doesn't believe it, and he and and if he doesn't
- 22:14Speaker 5: believe it, he won't work.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Hard enough to achieve it. And it resonates because this
- 22:21Speaker 4: guy coming from where we're from.
- 22:22Speaker 6: Yeah, and you can just hear it in his voice.
- 22:25Speaker 6: He doesn't really raise his voice. It's just kind of,
- 22:28Speaker 6: you know, in a monotone way. He says, you know,
- 22:30Speaker 6: my name wasn't going to be at the end of
- 22:31Speaker 6: the bottom of the list by the time that the
- 22:33Speaker 6: season started. He said it in a way like that.
- 22:36Speaker 6: That's just a matter of fact. You know, he didn't
- 22:38Speaker 6: get overly emotional. You know, he just had a quiet
- 22:42Speaker 6: drive about him. I think I think he didn't have
- 22:44Speaker 6: to go out there and and and and try to
- 22:46Speaker 6: be flashy or or say I'm the best. He showed
- 22:49Speaker 6: he was the best.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Honey Well, West Virginia way all the way. And that's
- 22:52Speaker 4: and when you look him up, that's Kurt with a C.
- 22:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:55Speaker 5: So it is Kurt and and and and it is
- 23:00Speaker 5: and it's it's kind of shameful because we we shouldn't
- 23:04Speaker 5: have to give out that information like people should for
- 23:08Speaker 5: younger people for sure, But again we we we have
- 23:16Speaker 5: we've heard our children because we have not acknowledged our
- 23:22Speaker 5: great athletes and and kept their name alive, kept their
- 23:27Speaker 5: success alive. We've we've failed in that category for whatever
- 23:32Speaker 5: the reason. And I don't know if it's because you
- 23:34Speaker 5: don't want the you don't want the athlete to get
- 23:37Speaker 5: cocky or or whatever. But they're But but you can
- 23:41Speaker 5: hear in in the last two clips, you hear people
- 23:47Speaker 5: talking about their individual confidence. Yeah they're not they're not
- 23:52Speaker 5: selling that out to the public. But you're never going
- 23:55Speaker 5: to be able to tell me no, man, You're not
- 23:57Speaker 5: gonna make it. Yeah.
- 23:58Speaker 4: I think things just get lost with time and hopefully,
- 24:01Speaker 4: and I'm glad that we had the opportunity to do
- 24:04Speaker 4: our part in preserving that history and bringing it to
- 24:07Speaker 4: the masses.

- 25:19Speaker 3: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's talk is
- 25:22Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker. Real talk, real experience,
- 25:26Speaker 3: real results, Frank Walker, Law dot com. Let that conversation
- 25:30Speaker 3: begin on Let's talk.
- 25:33Speaker 4: You know, we have another athlete from that area who
- 25:36Speaker 4: definitely got lost with time. You know when we talk about,
- 25:40Speaker 4: you know, the great Christy Martin and you know what
- 25:43Speaker 4: she meant.
- 25:44Speaker 5: Did y'all get to see the movie? Yeah? I did,
- 25:46Speaker 5: Yeah I did, Yeah, Yeah I did. It was it
- 25:48Speaker 5: was really really good movie.
- 25:51Speaker 4: I think it you know far as you know, just
- 25:52Speaker 4: got caught with maybe some bad timing as far as
- 25:55Speaker 4: just the time of which it came out, but excellent movie.
- 25:59Speaker 4: You know, just shows her story fighting through adversity, and
- 26:03Speaker 4: again it's just another one coming from small town West
- 26:06Speaker 4: Virginia and not only being a women's boxing champion, not
- 26:10Speaker 4: only being a trailblazer, but actually just pitting the sport
- 26:16Speaker 4: on the mountaintop, bringing like carrying that Torch for the
- 26:19Speaker 4: Corrissa Shields and the Alicia Bumgardner and everybody else, all
- 26:22Speaker 4: the other women who are fighting not only just boxing,
- 26:26Speaker 4: but combat sports in general. So when you talk about
- 26:30Speaker 4: the Holly Holmes, when you talk about Deronda Rousey's, when
- 26:32Speaker 4: you talk about all these people, it was Christy Martin
- 26:36Speaker 4: who brought that, who made it okay for women to
- 26:38Speaker 4: get punched in the face on pay per views. Yeah,
- 26:44Speaker 4: it was just like and again just to have her
- 26:48Speaker 4: just to you know, hear her story, everything she's went
- 26:51Speaker 4: through and everything she's overcoming.
- 26:52Speaker 6: And we weren't thinking like she was gonna, you know,
- 27:00Speaker 6: come in, and she was admitted about Oh no, I'm
- 27:03Speaker 6: coming in, And You're like.
- 27:05Speaker 5: Wow, okay.
- 27:06Speaker 4: It's crazy because I had I met Christy at the
- 27:09Speaker 4: airport here, you know, in town, at Yager and I'm.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Looking at her, I'm like, man, dang, she looks familiar.
- 27:16Speaker 5: I know her.
- 27:17Speaker 4: And then she had her had her jacket on from
- 27:20Speaker 4: her boxing promotion company. I was like, oh, yeah, that's
- 27:23Speaker 4: Christy Martin, and I just went up and introduced myself.
- 27:26Speaker 6: That's how you do it.
- 27:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I straight up just was like, hey, I'm a fan,
- 27:29Speaker 5: you know.
- 27:30Speaker 4: I remember watching I remember her fighting the starter on
- 27:34Speaker 4: the Mike Tyson undercrowd. I'm like, this is from West Virginia. Yeah,
- 27:36Speaker 4: you know that's gonna pick your interest. And again same thing,
- 27:39Speaker 4: small town West Virginia to the mountain.
- 27:42Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 27:42Speaker 6: And I also want to just commend her on her
- 27:44Speaker 6: dedication to domestic abuse awareness and treatment. She took her
- 27:49Speaker 6: personal pain and story and put it out there for
- 27:52Speaker 6: others to see that, you know, you can get out
- 27:54Speaker 6: of these situations. So that's a personal thing that she's
- 27:59Speaker 6: taken to heart, and she's really working toward making you know,
- 28:03Speaker 6: strides in in bettering that kind of situation.
- 28:07Speaker 5: I just think, again, I just think about these these
- 28:13Speaker 5: super superstar people that that we've had an opportunity to
- 28:18Speaker 5: uh talk to and have on this have on the show,
- 28:22Speaker 5: and and it amazes me how like like where are
- 28:30Speaker 5: where are they here? How do we how do we
- 28:33Speaker 5: keep them? How do we keep them alive?
- 28:35Speaker 7: Like?
- 28:35Speaker 5: How do we keep them present? How do we keep
- 28:38Speaker 5: them notable? I just think I just think that there's
- 28:44Speaker 5: just we're missing something. But I don't think so.
- 28:47Speaker 4: I mean, we're doing everybody else, but like we're definitely
- 28:54Speaker 4: doing our part and to keeping these name alive and
- 28:56Speaker 4: bringing them to the forefront, and like you said, we
- 28:59Speaker 4: have them in the studio, Yo, we're telling your story.
- 29:02Speaker 4: Hopefully we can you know, do a second round with
- 29:04Speaker 4: a lot of these individuals. So I think we're doing
- 29:06Speaker 4: We're doing that.
- 29:07Speaker 5: I agree, I agree. I'm just I'm just I'm sitting
- 29:12Speaker 5: over here and and and trying to trying to assess
- 29:17Speaker 5: like why is it, why is it? Why is it
- 29:20Speaker 5: not bigger? Why is it not why are they not
- 29:22Speaker 5: like why? You know, I just don't. I don't know.
- 29:24Speaker 4: I think somebody, I think, but you know what I
- 29:26Speaker 4: think again, from the onset, I think it was somebody
- 29:29Speaker 4: had to do the due diligence for to east to
- 29:33Speaker 4: like spark for to begin, and I think we've positioned
- 29:37Speaker 4: ourselves to be that plug. I mean we we may
- 29:40Speaker 4: not be like the biggest platform, but I think that
- 29:44Speaker 4: from what we do, hopefully others can get a little
- 29:47Speaker 4: something from and we can bring those individuals back on
- 29:50Speaker 4: because I think, you know, again, I think it's easy
- 29:52Speaker 4: when it comes to like mountain air sports, because everybody
- 29:55Speaker 4: in their momy knows like Major Harrison, Pat White and
- 29:58Speaker 4: Steve Slayton and Tavon ason Man, and we know all
- 30:01Speaker 4: those guys because they're mountaineers. But if you really look at,
- 30:05Speaker 4: you know, West Virginia sports just holistically, I mean, we
- 30:09Speaker 4: could just go through it. You can go to the
- 30:11Speaker 4: guys from North Fork, you can go to the so
- 30:14Speaker 4: we have some w NBA players, We've had boxing combats
- 30:18Speaker 4: where we have all types of stuff that I think
- 30:21Speaker 4: just go beyond w v U sports. So sometimes I
- 30:24Speaker 4: think we get stuck there. But I think, you know,
- 30:27Speaker 4: hopefully our platform and others can start highlighting everybody else.
- 30:29Speaker 6: I was just gonna say that, Hollish, you hit the
- 30:31Speaker 6: nail on the head. I mean, most most of these
- 30:33Speaker 6: podcasts and platforms that have podcasts, they have a niche.
- 30:37Speaker 6: It's either w Sports, it's Marshall Sports. I think, I
- 30:41Speaker 6: think what we've done, and not to toot our own horn,
- 30:43Speaker 6: but we will. We've kind of showcased West Virginia at athleticism.
- 30:49Speaker 6: We've brought in all the different sports and all the
- 30:51Speaker 6: different you know, positions and and so what we're doing
- 30:56Speaker 6: I think is unique to the state of West Virginia.
- 30:59Speaker 5: Yeah. Well, I and to your both to your points,
- 31:03Speaker 5: I had one hundred percent agreed, because I mean just
- 31:06Speaker 5: going through the list of people that that we've had.
- 31:12Speaker 5: I mean, you know, that's a that's a those names, yeah, yeah,
- 31:16Speaker 5: are are extremely great, not good, but great great. Even
- 31:23Speaker 5: individuals and athletes knock.
- 31:26Speaker 10: Someone out, you have to be willing to put yourself
- 31:28Speaker 10: in position to be knocked out. You cannot be scared,
- 31:34Speaker 10: you cannot have fear. You can you have to have
- 31:36Speaker 10: the dog in you. You can talk dog all you want,
- 31:41Speaker 10: it's got to show me. But yeah, no, I got
- 31:42Speaker 10: up every morning early. I ran three three and a
- 31:46Speaker 10: half miles because Angelo Dundee said, you're not a runner,
- 31:48Speaker 10: you know, you're three miles. That's what Ali did. So
- 31:51Speaker 10: I figured if the greatest did it, I'll be okay.
- 31:54Speaker 10: So my little track was three point two actually, and
- 31:56Speaker 10: then I would do sprints and then I would go
- 31:59Speaker 10: to the gym and work about somewhere between twenty and
- 32:02Speaker 10: thirty rounds. That was hand pads, heavy bag, shadow boxing, jumping, rope, speedback,
- 32:07Speaker 10: all those things, and then I would go back to
- 32:08Speaker 10: the gym inspar like three days a week. So you know,
- 32:13Speaker 10: it was just boxing boxing. I watched fights, I watched
- 32:16Speaker 10: my opponent. It was one hundred percent. My focus was
- 32:19Speaker 10: on boxing, So.
- 32:20Speaker 5: There wasn't much time for any any like. So when
- 32:23Speaker 5: you were off, you were probably more so watching.
- 32:26Speaker 6: I was never off, I really wasn't.
- 32:29Speaker 10: I just because Donkey could call me anytime, and when
- 32:33Speaker 10: he called, I was. Actually one time I was home
- 32:36Speaker 10: at Christmas here in West Virginia and he called me
- 32:39Speaker 10: on Christmas Day and told me I was going to
- 32:40Speaker 10: fight January twelfth or fourteenth. So I wow, got in
- 32:45Speaker 10: the car and drove back to Florida to be ready
- 32:48Speaker 10: for the fight. The good thing was I was running,
- 32:50Speaker 10: I was in shape.
- 32:52Speaker 5: So because you were, you were still doing all your stuff.
- 32:55Speaker 10: Always ready, Because how am I going to tell don
- 32:58Speaker 10: King No, I'm not ready? You can't do that call again?
- 33:01Speaker 11: Right.
- 33:02Speaker 10: So that's one thing I tell my guys. You have
- 33:04Speaker 10: to always be ready because some major promoter might call
- 33:07Speaker 10: me and say, hey, we need one hundred and thirty
- 33:10Speaker 10: pounder to fight so and so because some just fell out.
- 33:15Speaker 10: Be ready, be ready. You have to be ready. You're
- 33:17Speaker 10: a professional fighter. That means that's your job.
- 33:19Speaker 6: Wow.
- 33:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:20Speaker 4: And the golfer I was alluding to was pro am
- 33:23Speaker 4: golfer West Virginia legend Phil pat Carter. Pat Carter, I
- 33:28Speaker 4: want to say, pheel so bad. But Pat Carter, I
- 33:30Speaker 4: mean and again just somebody who again, somebody who's won
- 33:34Speaker 4: titled after title and just being a legend and golf
- 33:38Speaker 4: with the you know, the biggest names that people may
- 33:40Speaker 4: not know about. But he was We were lucky enough
- 33:44Speaker 4: to have him as a guest on our show, and
- 33:45Speaker 4: he you know, told us his story, you know, going
- 33:48Speaker 4: to Marshall and starting you know, being a part of
- 33:52Speaker 4: the initial class of you know, golfers down there. So
- 33:58Speaker 4: it's just like getting those stories out is just something
- 34:01Speaker 4: I'm grateful for for this showing this year.
- 34:04Speaker 5: It's it's a it's a really amazing kind of idea
- 34:11Speaker 5: of reaching out and hearing and getting a chance to
- 34:18Speaker 5: pull in these individuals who are from West Virginia and
- 34:22Speaker 5: and hear their story from them. You know, because you
- 34:29Speaker 5: you could have saw the movie, you could have read
- 34:31Speaker 5: a newspaper article, you could have heard some things about them.
- 34:35Speaker 5: But when they are talking, it is it is so different.
- 34:41Speaker 5: But again, what comes across to me what I hear
- 34:45Speaker 5: coming out of Christy's conversation again is that quiet, almost
- 34:52Speaker 5: almost scary. She's so and she's talking like if you
- 35:03Speaker 5: want to get in the ring, let's go.
- 35:05Speaker 4: Yeah, like I'm telling you to really walk upon her.
- 35:08Speaker 4: You could tell she'll give you one too. Yeah, it
- 35:10Speaker 4: ain't really know, you know, it's no thing for And
- 35:13Speaker 4: so are we are we discovering something in these interviews
- 35:19Speaker 4: that are that's a common denominator with these athletes are
- 35:24Speaker 4: being really self confident. And again, I don't care how
- 35:28Speaker 4: it comes across to somebody. To me, I hear it
- 35:31Speaker 4: as self confident and certain ensure of who and what
- 35:38Speaker 4: they can do. I think with the West Virginia athletes,
- 35:40Speaker 4: and again we've talked to like you know, Alexis Hornbuck
- 35:43Speaker 4: and Christy and Kurt Warner, specifically with the West West
- 35:47Speaker 4: Virginia athletes, it's not I wouldn't describe it as self confidence.
- 35:50Speaker 4: I would describe it as just a burning belief.
- 35:52Speaker 5: You know.
- 35:53Speaker 4: I think you know West Virginia's we have a natural
- 35:56Speaker 4: humbleness to us and you know all those sort of
- 35:58Speaker 4: West Virginia things. But specifically with the West Virginia elite
- 36:02Speaker 4: West Virginians athletes I've talked to, it's really just a belief.
- 36:05Speaker 4: They just believe they can do do it. And I
- 36:07Speaker 4: think they they that beliefs come with a little bit
- 36:10Speaker 4: of a chip just considering where they're from when they're
- 36:13Speaker 4: competing against the world or competing against you know, the
- 36:16Speaker 4: nation's best in whatever particular sport. So for me, what
- 36:20Speaker 4: I've gathered is just like it's just that burning, like yeah,
- 36:23Speaker 4: driving belief.
- 36:24Speaker 6: And I also think that they you know, we're a
- 36:26Speaker 6: small state. We're not known for our professional athletes, our
- 36:30Speaker 6: professional ball ball teams. I mean, you know, basically you're
- 36:34Speaker 6: already I don't want to say it a disadvantage, but
- 36:37Speaker 6: in a way, you've got to go even harder because
- 36:40Speaker 6: you're coming from this small state and to prove that
- 36:44Speaker 6: you're you're you're where you should be, that you've earned
- 36:47Speaker 6: your spot, and so that kind of contributes to their drive.
- 36:51Speaker 6: I think just being in West Virginia makes it, you know,
- 36:54Speaker 6: even more special.
- 36:56Speaker 5: So are you saying that the state itself and the
- 37:00Speaker 5: and the and and how we function is a motivating factor,
- 37:06Speaker 5: can be a motivating factor to the hometown athlete to drive,
- 37:12Speaker 5: to give them the drive to want to be successful.
- 37:16Speaker 5: I don't know if I wouldn't say I wouldn't say that.
- 37:18Speaker 5: I just say, like you just there's there. It's an
- 37:21Speaker 5: example that it's possible your drive is on you and
- 37:25Speaker 5: whatever that is for you. But it's just if you know,
- 37:29Speaker 5: these athletes are where you're from, and in some cases,
- 37:33Speaker 5: like a Kurt Warner, they're even like way smaller than
- 37:37Speaker 5: if you're Charleston looked like Metropolis compared to where he's from, right, right,
- 37:41Speaker 5: So it's just saying like, okay, they made it. It's
- 37:44Speaker 5: maybe it's a chance that I can too, like where
- 37:46Speaker 5: I'm from, and you know, my environment doesn't necessarily dictate
- 37:50Speaker 5: where I can go. So it's just like and again,
- 37:54Speaker 5: that's why I think it's important to have those you know,
- 37:57Speaker 5: women and men on because it just serves as, hey,
- 38:00Speaker 5: I can do that because they did.
- 38:02Speaker 6: That, and carl you're you're an example of that. So
- 38:05Speaker 6: did you ever feel like when you were coming, you know,
- 38:07Speaker 6: through Marshall, through the ranks to make it to the
- 38:09Speaker 6: NFL level, did you ever feel like at times you
- 38:12Speaker 6: had to go like twice as hard as your teammates
- 38:14Speaker 6: or to prove that you were you belonged.
- 38:20Speaker 5: I to be honest, I felt like I was already going.
- 38:25Speaker 6: I already knew, yeah, I.
- 38:28Speaker 5: Had I was. I knew that I was gonna, I
- 38:30Speaker 5: was gonna outwork that guy. You know, it didn't make
- 38:34Speaker 5: any difference if we could be buddies all day long,
- 38:38Speaker 5: but you're playing a position that I want to play.
- 38:42Speaker 5: I got to beat you out. You know. I just
- 38:47Speaker 5: have always been for me and and the method of
- 38:51Speaker 5: my quote success has always been about who do I who?
- 38:57Speaker 5: Who do I have to go after? Yeah, because somebody's
- 39:00Speaker 5: going to be playing the position that I when I
- 39:02Speaker 5: get there, somebody's going to be playing that position.
- 39:04Speaker 6: So you were so focused on your end goal that
- 39:07Speaker 6: you really didn't think about, you know, what you had
- 39:11Speaker 6: to prove.
- 39:11Speaker 5: You know, I was, I was. I was just simply
- 39:14Speaker 5: trying to to get I needed Hollis out of the way,
- 39:18Speaker 5: so I needed I needed to get past him so
- 39:21Speaker 5: that I could get in the lineup and then the
- 39:22Speaker 5: rest will take care of itself, right.
- 39:24Speaker 4: Speaking of another great female woman West Virginian athlete, we
- 39:30Speaker 4: have the we got the chance to interview the great
- 39:32Speaker 4: Alexis Hornbuckle, who I consider again, people may not consider it,
- 39:38Speaker 4: but she's the greatest West Virginian basketball player of all
- 39:42Speaker 4: time men women. Again, when we talk about McDonald, All
- 39:46Speaker 4: American High School, All American Collegiate, All Americans She's won
- 39:50Speaker 4: championships on every single level, high school, college, and pro played.
- 39:56Speaker 4: I think some not necessarily the Olympics, but the like
- 39:59Speaker 4: the pro the like the one of those Olympic type
- 40:02Speaker 4: of games. I mean when you when you can sit.
- 40:05Speaker 4: And again, won four straight championships in high school at
- 40:08Speaker 4: two different schools. So she won two championships at Capitol
- 40:12Speaker 4: High School, two championships at in South Charleston. I think
- 40:17Speaker 4: one season Darnell averaged quadruple double. She was simple and
- 40:22Speaker 4: I got to watch her first saying simply amazing athlete
- 40:25Speaker 4: and again another testimony of like what can happen? What
- 40:31Speaker 4: can be no matter where you're from. I mean, this
- 40:34Speaker 4: is a nationwide ranked, you know, basketball player since she
- 40:38Speaker 4: was a seventh eighth grade Do we have.
- 40:41Speaker 6: A clip for her?
- 40:42Speaker 10: Man?
- 40:42Speaker 5: Oh?
- 40:43Speaker 6: And we can hear that.
- 40:45Speaker 4: How important was it in your early development just to
- 40:48Speaker 4: be an athlete? Didn't kind of focusing that in to
- 40:51Speaker 4: being a great basketball player?
- 40:55Speaker 11: Man? It's important because you do anything, how you do everything,
- 40:58Speaker 11: So don't it doesn't matter what I'm playing or what
- 41:02Speaker 11: I'm doing is I think it's a competition, which almost
- 41:05Speaker 11: everything is to me. I want to learn it, teach me.
- 41:09Speaker 11: I want to learn it. Now, I want to try it,
- 41:11Speaker 11: and now I want to master it or dominate it.
- 41:14Speaker 11: So especially in the sport world. And I'm the younger sister.
- 41:17Speaker 11: My brother and I were fifteen months apart, so I'm
- 41:19Speaker 11: trying to keep up with him, do what he does,
- 41:22Speaker 11: you know, you know what I mean? And then growing
- 41:25Speaker 11: up in the bottom and dunbar and the most of
- 41:28Speaker 11: it's just like you can't be soft. You can't. If
- 41:31Speaker 11: I want to play with the boys, I gotta want
- 41:33Speaker 11: to compete and beat the boys. So yeah, it just
- 41:38Speaker 11: came down to, like I want to beat the boys.
- 41:40Speaker 11: I don't want to be the best girl, Like I
- 41:41Speaker 11: want to be the best out here.
- 41:43Speaker 5: Right.
- 41:43Speaker 11: So that was soccer. That was basketball, and soccer obviously
- 41:48Speaker 11: is an advantage when it comes to conditioning, agility, right footwork,
- 41:53Speaker 11: even court vision because an angles. If I can make
- 41:56Speaker 11: certain passes on a soccer field, what am I going
- 41:58Speaker 11: to do with ninety four feet to eat money?
- 42:01Speaker 5: That's like it? So so what what?
- 42:03Speaker 10: So?
- 42:03Speaker 4: What?
- 42:04Speaker 5: What is what is Lexus hornbook up to?
- 42:06Speaker 4: Yeah, and again you just see again it's that that drive,
- 42:10Speaker 4: that confidence, that that willing to do what it takes
- 42:14Speaker 4: to be the best. Again, that's not necessarily and I
- 42:17Speaker 4: wouldn't say that's probably aren't West Virginia quality. That's probably
- 42:19Speaker 4: any great athlete who wants to do anything. But I
- 42:23Speaker 4: think it's just so important that we have those examples
- 42:26Speaker 4: here and you're really seeing, like, look, man, if if
- 42:28Speaker 4: you if you really want it, this is an example
- 42:32Speaker 4: of what it can be.
- 42:32Speaker 5: And and part of it is saying it, yeah, and
- 42:35Speaker 5: then putting if you're gonna say it, then you're gonna
- 42:39Speaker 5: put in the work. Yeah. And and I and I
- 42:42Speaker 5: and I really I don't know if we have enough
- 42:48Speaker 5: people who believe that that that that success could be
- 42:53Speaker 5: theirs because they won't put the work in. It's it's
- 42:59Speaker 5: it's the only piece that's holding him back.
- 43:03Speaker 6: Well, she did say, and I caught this a couple
- 43:06Speaker 6: of things I caught that really stood out to me,
- 43:07Speaker 6: and I remembered it during the podcast when we replayed
- 43:10Speaker 6: the clip. But everything is competition to me. Yes, And
- 43:13Speaker 6: the two words that stuck out after that she said
- 43:16Speaker 6: was dominate and master. She just didn't want to be competent.
- 43:19Speaker 6: She wants to totally take over the game and be
- 43:22Speaker 6: the best that's ever played the game. As a female.
- 43:25Speaker 4: And again I think she probably was just maybe a
- 43:28Speaker 4: tad early as far as where we're at women's basketball. Yeah,
- 43:34Speaker 4: just a tad early. Like I said, there were obviously
- 43:37Speaker 4: the WNBA was functioning when she was coming out of
- 43:40Speaker 4: college in high school, but it wasn't where it's had now.
- 43:45Speaker 4: And but I will say she went to a premiere program.
- 43:48Speaker 4: She went to Tennessee play for Pat some Morroll. So
- 43:51Speaker 4: it was just like I said, again, going from South Charleston, Dunbar,
- 43:55Speaker 4: West Virginia to going to play for the premiere program.
- 43:58Speaker 4: It's not again similar to Kurt Warner, right, You're not
- 44:01Speaker 4: going to you know, whatever school you're going to the
- 44:05Speaker 4: school for for that particular sport. You know, you look
- 44:09Speaker 4: at Yukon and Tennessee and she was able to go
- 44:11Speaker 4: to Tennessee and win championships there and going to have
- 44:15Speaker 4: this great career. So it's just awesome to have like
- 44:18Speaker 4: people like that. It was just awesome to interview her
- 44:21Speaker 4: and not only just you know, tell her story, but
- 44:24Speaker 4: also get her insight, to get that, you know, her
- 44:28Speaker 4: mindset when it came to you know, being that kid
- 44:31Speaker 4: and trying to you know, walk into those dreams that
- 44:33Speaker 4: they had, So it was just awesome.
- 44:36Speaker 6: We've had a great year.
- 44:37Speaker 5: Yeah, really really good year. Yeah, we've been very very
- 44:41Speaker 5: very very very fortunate to actually have the name recognition.
- 44:47Speaker 6: And what about and what about when we had your
- 44:49Speaker 6: reunion you're all of the Vikings. Oh my gosh, remind
- 44:52Speaker 6: us of that. That was that was a funven We
- 44:55Speaker 6: who were the names?
- 44:56Speaker 5: Yeah, he was We had Todd, Scott, Vincy Glenn, and
- 45:00Speaker 5: I think it was Audrey McMillan.
- 45:01Speaker 4: Okay, do we know where they went to school at,
- 45:03Speaker 4: like colleges and oh gosh, I should know. But they
- 45:06Speaker 4: all played for Minnesota. They all played for Minnesota.
- 45:08Speaker 6: Yeah, that that night was a huge That was That
- 45:13Speaker 6: was for me.
- 45:14Speaker 5: That was special because that was probably the first time
- 45:18Speaker 5: that I had been on the call with all three
- 45:21Speaker 5: of those guys at the same time. And we were
- 45:28Speaker 5: we were fools, like I mean, we we hung out
- 45:31Speaker 5: and we we we just had a great time. But man,
- 45:35Speaker 5: when it came down to playing, yeah, everybody was accountable. Everybody.
- 45:42Speaker 5: If you give up a touchdown, you're gonna hear it, right,
- 45:45Speaker 5: you know, now you can give up you can give
- 45:48Speaker 5: up a touchdown and you can we could say the
- 45:50Speaker 5: D line didn't get some pressure or whatever. That don't
- 45:54Speaker 5: matter to the group. The group is. Our goal is
- 45:59Speaker 5: is not to give up, kept each other accountable, to
- 46:02Speaker 5: hold each other accountable and man and to be held
- 46:06Speaker 5: accountable and looking at a guy that you know is
- 46:09Speaker 5: your buddy who will go go to any length for you,
- 46:14Speaker 5: but you're accountable to him to be the best player
- 46:18Speaker 5: on Sunday that you can be, which means you have
- 46:21Speaker 5: to do all of the right stuff during the week.
- 46:24Speaker 4: Yeah, and we were able to get another Minnesota Viking
- 46:27Speaker 4: on Dante Colepepper, which was which was cool. Again, just
- 46:31Speaker 4: a great guy, had great commentary, played with Randy Moss,
- 46:35Speaker 4: you know, obviously connected to you through the Vikings. We
- 46:39Speaker 4: had some great coaches on, We had great this local talent. So,
- 46:45Speaker 4: like I said, I just think that this was just a.
- 46:47Speaker 6: Freand Apkins from South South Carolina game Cox he's the
- 46:52Speaker 6: offensive line coach.
- 46:54Speaker 5: Yeah, we've been very We've been really, really really blessed
- 46:56Speaker 5: of the kind of people you know that we've had
- 47:02Speaker 5: on the show, whether it be by phone and even
- 47:06Speaker 5: even more so people who have come in.
- 47:09Speaker 6: And I just love the fact that we've hit almost
- 47:11Speaker 6: every area of sports. I mean we've had track stars,
- 47:14Speaker 6: we've had football, baseball, basketball, I mean we've hit almost everything.
- 47:19Speaker 6: The only thing I think we haven't hit. Have we
- 47:21Speaker 6: hit hockey, we.
- 47:24Speaker 4: Hit bodybuilding, we hit the Yeah, because yeah, so we've
- 47:27Speaker 4: hit And again that's another thing, just having the diversity
- 47:29Speaker 4: where we're just not like obviously you know, football, basketball
- 47:32Speaker 4: and big sellers. Yeah, people want to hear that, but
- 47:34Speaker 4: just being able to have athletes across you know, the
- 47:37Speaker 4: entire landscape of sports is pretty cool as well well.
- 47:39Speaker 4: Because yeah, because if you're out there listening and you know,
- 47:42Speaker 4: you're you know, you do something, whatever that thing is,
- 47:45Speaker 4: and all of a sudden the show that you watch,
- 47:49Speaker 4: you there's somebody on that's doing like you said, like
- 47:52Speaker 4: to the bodybuilding or whatever. That's not something that you
- 47:56Speaker 4: think would probably wouldn't be on the show. But now
- 47:58Speaker 4: all of a sudden you hear in somebody and telling
- 48:01Speaker 4: their story about what they did, how they've done it,
- 48:04Speaker 4: and all those kinds of things.
- 48:05Speaker 6: It's on a deep dip.
- 48:07Speaker 4: So who's your who's your twenty twenty six dream guests?
- 48:13Speaker 6: Oh that's a tough one. I would love. I would
- 48:15Speaker 6: and hopefully the audience, if anybody knows how to get
- 48:17Speaker 6: in contact. Carl probably does, but I have it Randy
- 48:21Speaker 6: Moss with Yeah, I'd love to have Randy here.
- 48:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I would love to have him in the studio,
- 48:26Speaker 5: you know, I'm sure, Yeah he would.
- 48:27Speaker 6: Can I have more than one because I've got a list.
- 48:29Speaker 6: I'd love to have rich Rod. I would love to
- 48:31Speaker 6: have rich Rod in here. I would love to have
- 48:33Speaker 6: you know, coach coach Gibby in here. There's a whole
- 48:37Speaker 6: list of West Virginia athletes that I admire. I'd love
- 48:40Speaker 6: to have.
- 48:41Speaker 5: I think to the to your to your two coaches.
- 48:43Speaker 5: I think I think that there could be a chance
- 48:47Speaker 5: of getting them here. And I think one of it,
- 48:54Speaker 5: you know, part of that is going to you know,
- 48:56Speaker 5: it's gonna matter seasonal and all that kind of stuff.
- 48:59Speaker 5: That's especially if we want him in studio. Who's your
- 49:03Speaker 5: who's your dream guests? Oh? Man, I don't well, I'll
- 49:12Speaker 5: tell you I would. I would. I would.
- 49:16Speaker 4: I would love to get Nick Saban. You know, we're
- 49:18Speaker 4: talking about West Virginia guys. I would love to talk
- 49:20Speaker 4: to Nick Saban, you know, just about you know, not
- 49:23Speaker 4: only his journey, you know, being a West Virginia guy
- 49:26Speaker 4: coming up Kent state and being his coaching legend, what
- 49:28Speaker 4: he thinks of you know, we know what he probably
- 49:31Speaker 4: thinks of current state of collegiate sports, and just and
- 49:33Speaker 4: just being a West Virginia guy like you know, yeah,
- 49:38Speaker 4: and also the head coach of Indiana.
- 49:40Speaker 5: He's a West Virginia guy.
- 49:42Speaker 6: Jimba Fisher too. Let's just let's just do a trofecta
- 49:45Speaker 6: West Virginia and.
- 49:46Speaker 5: See and I like and see, I don't I don't
- 49:50Speaker 5: really think. I don't really think that Nick Saban could
- 49:53Speaker 5: be that difficult to get. I don't make it.
- 49:58Speaker 6: I don't well, I would say basically a wish less
- 50:04Speaker 6: you know, it's like.
- 50:08Speaker 5: What we want for Christmas. I think I think that
- 50:11Speaker 5: I think that Nick Saban may have an opportunity to
- 50:16Speaker 5: want to talk about being from West Virginia, talk about
- 50:22Speaker 5: his success back here in West Virginia. I think, I see.
- 50:26Speaker 5: I think some of those types of people that seem
- 50:29Speaker 5: totally out of reach, I think they they have a
- 50:34Speaker 5: they would love an opportunity to have to come back
- 50:39Speaker 5: to their state and have that and have a conversation
- 50:42Speaker 5: and talk about let's make it happen.
- 50:44Speaker 6: And you know what, I was just gonna throw that
- 50:46Speaker 6: the audience may have some people that they really love
- 50:48Speaker 6: to listen to us interviews. So if you can hit
- 50:51Speaker 6: Carle Let's talk with Carle facebook page, send a message
- 50:54Speaker 6: to us, give us your wish less we'll see what
- 50:56Speaker 6: we can we can do.
- 50:58Speaker 5: And and and to that again, i'd like for you know,
- 51:01Speaker 5: we haven't really used our Facebook page a lot for
- 51:06Speaker 5: questions or people wanting to say, hey, could you get
- 51:10Speaker 5: this guest or even could I be on about this?
- 51:14Speaker 5: You know, I would like that would be my goal
- 51:18Speaker 5: is if we could get the less Talk Facebook page active,
- 51:23Speaker 5: and you know with not just people saying they like
- 51:27Speaker 5: the show. We appreciate that obviously, but somebody who's interested
- 51:31Speaker 5: in being on the show, or you have contacts to
- 51:35Speaker 5: somebody that might be beneficial for the show as well.
- 51:40Speaker 5: So this is our call to action.
- 51:42Speaker 4: So if you want, if you have a wish list,
- 51:45Speaker 4: or if you have a contact to somebody you would
- 51:47Speaker 4: like to have us interview, make sure you hit us
- 51:50Speaker 4: on the DM in the Facebook page. So I know
- 51:53Speaker 4: we're about to go to we're wrapping up, so just
- 51:56Speaker 4: moving looking forward to twenty twenty six. We got the
- 51:59Speaker 4: college football playoffs coming up, so we have Miami versus
- 52:03Speaker 4: Ohio State. We have Oregon versus Texas Tech, we have
- 52:06Speaker 4: Alabama versus Indiana, and we have Old Miss versus Georgia.
- 52:10Speaker 5: What are our picks?
- 52:11Speaker 4: So we'll start with Miami, the Ohio State in the Cotton.
- 52:15Speaker 6: Bowl, the Ohio State.
- 52:18Speaker 4: I got Ohio State, all right, Thursday, January first, we
- 52:22Speaker 4: got Oregon v Texas Tech the Capitol One Orange Bowl,
- 52:26Speaker 4: so they'll both be traveling to Florida.
- 52:29Speaker 6: I'm gonna have to go to Texas Tech.
- 52:30Speaker 4: I'm going to Tech. Yeah, I'm gonna go Virginia Tech. Yeah,
- 52:35Speaker 4: just based off of travel a long.
- 52:37Speaker 5: All right.
- 52:37Speaker 4: Then we have the Rose Bowl, so this is gonna
- 52:41Speaker 4: be in California. We got Alabama versus Indiana. So number
- 52:45Speaker 4: nine verse number one.
- 52:47Speaker 6: I've got to go Indiana, Go Indiana. Yeah, even though
- 52:50Speaker 6: Alabama scares me.
- 52:51Speaker 4: Now that scares me. I'm gonna go West Virginia. So
- 52:55Speaker 4: I'm gonna go Indiana as well. Gosh, now you put
- 52:59Speaker 4: that pressure out there.
- 53:05Speaker 5: H Alabama, go.
- 53:09Speaker 4: Alabama A bad Alabama, been there all right, last one.
- 53:16Speaker 4: So we got uh in the Sugar Bowl, Old Miss
- 53:19Speaker 4: versus Georgia.
- 53:22Speaker 6: Georgia.
- 53:23Speaker 5: I'm going to Old Miss that I want to see.
- 53:27Speaker 4: And I and I and I've been playing a record.
- 53:29Speaker 4: I never root for Old Miss for a variety of reasons,
- 53:33Speaker 4: but I want to see Old Miss get that one.
- 53:35Speaker 4: And I think they got the chip on the shoulder.
- 53:37Speaker 4: I think they can. I think they may be able
- 53:39Speaker 4: to pull that off. So we'll see. Like I said,
- 53:44Speaker 4: they played Georgia kind of ain't played in a couple
- 53:47Speaker 4: of weeks, so we'll see.
- 53:49Speaker 5: Sometimes that helps, sometimes it hurt. Ladies and gentlemen. We
- 53:54Speaker 5: do appreciate you all year long being with us, and
- 53:57Speaker 5: we hope that we can grab some more listeners and
- 54:01Speaker 5: grow the show for next year. Happy New Year, Happy
- 54:03Speaker 5: New Years, everybody. We are out of here.
