Latest / Coaches Corner / Luke Murray - Postgame Creighton
Transcript
- 0:00We're joined court side by Luke Murray, the ECON assists. I'll tell you,
- 0:03coach, that defense in the first half was intense. That was fun
- 0:06to watch, It was good to see, and to me, that was
- 0:10like championship type defense. Yeah, I agree. I mean, I think
- 0:13there was maybe a couple of letups in the second half, but I think
- 0:15by and large, that's the best defensive effort of the year for US.
- 0:19I think it's the best win of the year for US. Creighton's an amazing
- 0:21team, and we knew we needed to be at our best. And the
- 0:25rebounding advantage, which you know had been questioned in the last couple of games.
- 0:28You were about debti even with teams, and Yukon's an excellent rebounding team
- 0:32forty eight to thirty two in this one, and it was gang rebounding.
- 0:35A look at the everyone got involved. Yeah, I mean, I thought
- 0:38we did a great job on the defensive glass. Obviously, we forced a
- 0:40lot of misses, you know, so there's a lot of rebounds to be
- 0:43had. But I thought our guards did a great job. I thought Sampson,
- 0:46even though he didn't come up with a ton of them, did a
- 0:47really good job. Of battling in there, Alex big time on the defensive
- 0:51glass, but then you know the offensive glass. You know, Creighton's not
- 0:53a team that goes to the offensive glass a whole lot, so us holding
- 0:56it down on the defensive glass wasn't a huge surprise. But for us to
- 0:59go in there again it's an excellent defensive rebounding team and get twenty one back
- 1:03was huge in the game. Yeah, you know, you won your last
- 1:06four game scoring over eighty averaging eighty three a game. I mean, I
- 1:08guess this shows you you can win a game in the sixties if you have
- 1:11to. You don't want to do that, but you had to do it
- 1:14tonight. Yeah, I mean, again by any means necessary. I mean,
- 1:15they're an amazing defensive team. They got an excellent offense as well.
- 1:19That's why they're one of the best teams in the country. But they make
- 1:22it really hard on you to score. And obviously, you know, it
- 1:25was that way for us tonight. You know, I thought we had a
- 1:26little bit of spurts where we had some good rhythm, but for the most
- 1:29part, you know, they make it tough on you. But like you
- 1:30mentioned, I mean, for us to be able to win a grinder and
- 1:33show that we can win a game with our defense. I think was awesome
- 1:36to see. Yeah, the second chance points nineteen to five and the paint
- 1:38thirty six to twenty and getting clinging back even for sixteen minutes was a nice
- 1:44boost because he can do things that other guys can't do. Absolutely. I
- 1:48mean again, you know, obviously he's got a little bit of russ just
- 1:49trying to get back out there for the first time. It really is the
- 1:52first time that he's gone up and down with the exception of maybe three or
- 1:56four minutes in practice, so a brand new experience for him. But you
- 1:59know, he had two blocks, He probably altered four or five more shots.
- 2:01There are probably three other times where guys didn't drive in there because they
- 2:04saw him hanging around down there and a couple of big buckets and you know,
- 2:07got on the offensive glass as well. So that was great to see,
- 2:10and I think it's gonna help Sampson as well. Yeah, Luke Murray
- 2:14with us assistant for you, Gott, you were challenging calp Runner the entire
- 2:17night. That's not an easy thing to do. The dude's seven too.
- 2:21He blocks a lot of shots. He does. I mean, he's an
- 2:23amazing defender and he does a great job of protecting the paint. You know,
- 2:27I thought we, you know, a couple of times probably challenged him
- 2:30too much and maybe a little bit recklessly. I thought. Sometimes, you
- 2:31know, throughout the course of the season, teams like Colorado State and some
- 2:36others, you know, even Marquette at times did a really good job of
- 2:38getting deep in the lane, having Calprinner step to you and then being able
- 2:42to find guys late. Saint John's actually did a pretty good job of it
- 2:44as well. So we were hoping that we'd be able to kind of make
- 2:46some more of those late decisions to drop off passes to our bigs instead of
- 2:49just challenging at the rim. But you know, I think, like I
- 2:52said, there was a couple of times we were able to get to our
- 2:53spots Tristan and Cam in particular, and got some good looks in him.
- 2:58Yeah. A couple of quick final things. How about Tristan Newton. He'd
- 3:00been struggling offensively, not shooting well. He was just here talking to us.
- 3:04He said, I didn't shoot it that well and I'd six for fifteen,
- 3:06But he was mentioning you Dan early, you know, Kamani Young to
- 3:09more encourage him, keep shooting, keep doing it, because you're gonna find
- 3:14your groove. I guess is that the theory? Yeah, for sure.
- 3:15I mean he's a really good shooter. You know, obviously he's a better
- 3:17shooter than his percentages indicate, you know, the last couple of games kind
- 3:22of. But obviously he got off to an amazing start to start the year.
- 3:23But his two threes in the first half I thought were huge. You
- 3:25know, we didn't have a great rhythm and we needed those shots. They
- 3:29were kind of you know, broken possessions a little bit, and he was
- 3:30able to knock shots down, which was huge. And then he stayed at
- 3:34it. You know, he got four offensive rebounds, he was on the
- 3:36defensive glass. Sixteen points. It's hard to come by in a game like
- 3:39this, so I give him a lot of credit. He kept fighting and
- 3:42finally being number one this first shot at it this year. The Yukon's done
- 3:46it ten times in their history. What's different about that? If anything?
- 3:50Nothing? I mean, honestly, you know, I think for us,
- 3:53you know, ending last year as the number one team in the country,
- 3:55that was good. That's all. We really care about. You know,
- 3:59it's nice, but when you've reached that status, you know it doesn't mean
- 4:02as much. So again, for us, obviously, it's something that we
- 4:06want to hold onto, but we go into every game, you know,
- 4:09treating it like it's life and death. Yeah, you gotta be humbled no
- 4:12matter what. I know you guys are all right. Coach, appreciate it,
- 4:15you got it. Thank you, sir,
