- 0:00Hi everybody and welcome back to the Elon Musk podcast.
- 0:02I'm your host, Will Walden, and today we're going to be talking
- 0:05about something that's absolutely at this forefront of
- 0:08space exploration. SpaceX is Starship rocket and
- 0:11the preparations for its next orbital flight.
- 0:14Now, some of you may already be aware that SpaceX is waiting for
- 0:18the Fish and Wildlife Service, the FWS, to give them the green
- 0:22light for the next launchpad. Now, simultaneously, the company
- 0:25has filed an application with the FCC for communication
- 0:29permissions during the upcoming Starship test flight, expected
- 0:32to commence this coming January. Possibly now, these bureaucratic
- 0:37steps are routine for SpaceX, but what's really intriguing
- 0:40here are the technological leaps, including several
- 0:43upgrades this next test is slated to showcase.
- 0:47So in today's episode, we'll be talking you through the
- 0:49specifics of the imminent Starship test flight, including
- 0:52major changes to the Rockets design and how these upgrades
- 0:56aim to help this behemoth, the largest and most powerful rocket
- 0:59to date, reach orbit successfully.
- 1:02Now the stakes couldn't be higher.
- 1:04Starship is expected to be the vessel that helps humanity set
- 1:07foot on Mars and return to our nearest neighbor, the moon.
- 1:12Now, first on the list of big modification is something that's
- 1:15an engineering marvel, the concept of hot staging.
- 1:19Traditionally, rockets execute a stage separation by halting the
- 1:22main engines on the booster and before the second stage even
- 1:26fires up. And however, SpaceX plans to
- 1:29keep Starships engines ignited while it's still essentially
- 1:32attached to the booster, which we refer to as the Super Heavy.
- 1:37Now, a former SpaceX mission director speculates this will
- 1:41give the rocket a payload increase of about 10%, and to
- 1:46facilitate this, SpaceX has integrated vents and heavy duty
- 1:50heat Shields at the top of the Super heavy booster.
- 1:54This ensures that the flames can escape, preventing the rocket
- 1:57from blowing up mid flight. The method is a bit riskier
- 2:01since the booster could potentially be damaged, but
- 2:03sometimes risk is synonymous with advancement.
- 2:07Now let's pivot for a moment to talk about another angle of the
- 2:09upcoming Starship test, the focus nature of the FCC
- 2:13application that SpaceX recently filed.
- 2:17Unlike other filings, this one is narrower in scope,
- 2:20specifically seeking approval for communication channels
- 2:24between the Starship booster and the launch site.
- 2:27The absence of other elements like the full Starship vehicle
- 2:30in the application raises some interesting questions.
- 2:34Could this suggest a series of test runs focusing predominantly
- 2:38on the booster and the paperwork could hint at SpaceX adopting a
- 2:42step by step approach, perhaps focusing initial tests at the
- 2:46first stage before proceeding to comprehensive trials involving
- 2:51the entire rocket system. This would allow SpaceX to
- 2:54ensure that each component of this complex machine is in top
- 2:58shape before the actual orbital flight takes place.
- 3:03Now, the third major change we're discussing today is the
- 3:06engines. As we all know, the Raptor
- 3:09engine is fundamentally more complex than the Merlin engines
- 3:12that power the Falcon 9. This complexity makes the engine
- 3:15more susceptible to leaks and therefore SpaceX has taken
- 3:19significant steps to improve the valves and seals on the Raptor
- 3:22engines and have seeing the fire suppression systems to manage
- 3:26any potential accidents and make them more efficient.
- 3:30Now, with 33 Raptor engines powering the first stage
- 3:32booster, we're talking about an incredible level of engineering
- 3:36intricacy. The effort to ensure each of
- 3:39these engines operates optimally is crucial not just for the
- 3:43success of the mission, but also for the long term goals that
- 3:46Starship aims to achieve, including the colonization of
- 3:49Mars and renewed lunar missions with the Artemis program with
- 3:53NASA, let's talk about the visual spectacle this Starship
- 3:57presents. It's not just the world's
- 3:59largest rocket, but also the one with the most engines on a first
- 4:03stage booster. When these 33 engines light up
- 4:06for a flight again, it's a sight to behold, unrivaled by any
- 4:10current or in development rockets.
- 4:13Additionally, a hot staging ring will be added to the top of the
- 4:16first stage booster, ensuring the stage separation is a
- 4:19success, and this will address the primary failure point of the
- 4:23last Test in April. And with these numerous
- 4:27upgrades, we're clearly marching toward a future where space
- 4:30travel isn't just a feat of engineering, but also a
- 4:33mesmerizing spectacle. The 2nd Starship test flight
- 4:36promises not just to correct past mistakes, but to push the
- 4:39envelope on what is possible in rocket design and engineering.
