- 0:05Speaker 1: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 0:08Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way. It's
- 0:27Speaker 1: a Monday afternoon here on sports Medio AM thirteen hundred.
- 0:30Speaker 1: The zone name Longhorns Monday, as we recap the Texas
- 0:36Speaker 1: Longhorn game every week. Good dad, whatever it might be,
- 0:40Speaker 1: in this case, it was not desirable at least certainly
- 0:43Speaker 1: from the Longhorn perspective. By the way, also, as as always,
- 0:50Speaker 1: we will be happy to access your texts to the program.
- 1:00Speaker 1: So if you want to text us, feel free to
- 1:04Speaker 1: do so. Text the word Texas follow by your question
- 1:07Speaker 1: or comment to eight one five to three zero. So
- 1:11Speaker 1: just text the word Texas followed by your question of
- 1:15Speaker 1: comment to eight one five three zero.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 1:19Speaker 1: For example, one person textan said Texas took a dive
- 1:24Speaker 1: last Saturday against Georgia.
- 1:25Speaker 2: They will get.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Killed by Vanderbilt this Saturday fifty eight to three. Their
- 1:31Speaker 1: fans will resort the violence like they did against Alabama.
- 1:36Speaker 1: The Vanderbilt fans will not be punished for throwing bottles
- 1:40Speaker 1: on the field. Is an A and M fan or
- 1:43Speaker 1: just somebody having fun with it. Yeah, I don't know,
- 1:49Speaker 1: I don't know. It's okay, though, listen, it's probably good
- 1:53Speaker 1: to have some human There were some humor in the
- 1:55Speaker 1: press conference today.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Good fives from I thought Sark and the players afterwards, Yeah,
- 2:01Speaker 3: there was not the sky is falling feeling that if
- 2:04Speaker 3: you go on Jenny Master's board or read social media,
- 2:07Speaker 3: it does appear that the sky is falling according to
- 2:10Speaker 3: the Texas fan base. Did not get that vibe from
- 2:12Speaker 3: the players and coaches.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, okay, anyway, and that by the way, that
- 2:18Speaker 1: text was to the morning Kickoff crew this morning, to
- 2:23Speaker 1: my cardball heart and to Mark Henry. But I thought
- 2:25Speaker 1: it was funny enough to offer it up again. So anyway,
- 2:29Speaker 1: that's an that's an example. If you want to text
- 2:31Speaker 1: this your your thoughts, your questions, or comments, feel free
- 2:35Speaker 1: to do so. All right, let's get to the news
- 2:37Speaker 1: conference stuff itself. I'm gonna start off with some things
- 2:40Speaker 1: that really get into some detail from Loghorn's head coach
- 2:43Speaker 1: Deep Sarcasan.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Alrighty, a couple of things to recap from this weekend.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I think, first of all, Longhorn Nation, what support we
- 2:52Speaker 4: got this weekend.
- 2:52Speaker 5: It was incredible from from.
- 2:54Speaker 4: All day long, from game day all the way through
- 2:57Speaker 4: the final whistle.
- 2:58Speaker 5: Can't thank y'all.
- 3:00Speaker 4: You know, when you look at the game, there's a
- 3:02Speaker 4: ton of things to look at in this game that
- 3:05Speaker 4: contributed to us not winning the football game. I mean,
- 3:10Speaker 4: you can really them converting those four turnovers into seventeen points.
- 3:16Speaker 4: You can look at us generating three turnovers defensively, also
- 3:20Speaker 4: only converting that into seven points. So so right away
- 3:22Speaker 4: we're at we're at ten point deficit. Not to mention,
- 3:25Speaker 4: it's the number one stat in football, and winning and
- 3:27Speaker 4: losing is a turnover battle. I think four pre snap
- 3:31Speaker 4: penalties offensively, two substitution airrors defensively to where we had
- 3:36Speaker 4: to burn two timeouts in the first half, two holding
- 3:39Speaker 4: penalties on special teams. I think all those types of
- 3:43Speaker 4: things led to you look at the average drive start
- 3:46Speaker 4: in the first half. You know, Georgia's average drive starting
- 3:48Speaker 4: field position was the forty seven yard line for their
- 3:51Speaker 4: nine possessions in the first half started in our end
- 3:54Speaker 4: of the field. Our average drive start position was a
- 3:56Speaker 4: twenty three yard line, and three of our first four
- 4:00Speaker 4: and started inside of our own thirteen yard line. So
- 4:02Speaker 4: it's a lot easier to score when you're closer to
- 4:04Speaker 4: the end zone and we had a long way to go.
- 4:07Speaker 4: They had a short way to go. I think that
- 4:09Speaker 4: that contributed quite a bit to that. You know, I
- 4:13Speaker 4: will say in the second half, I was really proud
- 4:16Speaker 4: of our players. They played better football. We played hard,
- 4:19Speaker 4: we played with great effort. But the key to the
- 4:23Speaker 4: drill when you're playing in games with with quality people
- 4:26Speaker 4: on both on both teams, effort is one piece of
- 4:30Speaker 4: the ingredient. Execution is the other piece of the ingredient,
- 4:33Speaker 4: and we just did not have great execution Saturday night.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Most notably, we didn't have great execution at critical moments
- 4:40Speaker 4: when you start thinking about third down and fourth down.
- 4:43Speaker 4: I think we were two of fifteen on third down.
- 4:46Speaker 4: We were one of five on fourth down when our
- 4:49Speaker 4: execution was was needed.
- 4:51Speaker 5: You know, in the red zone. Defensive We've been so
- 4:54Speaker 5: good defensively.
- 4:55Speaker 4: In the red area and then they had a lot
- 4:56Speaker 4: of opportunities, but three of five for touchdowns in the
- 4:59Speaker 4: red area when we needed that execution, it just wasn't
- 5:02Speaker 4: quite as good as we needed it to be. So,
- 5:05Speaker 4: you know, the turnovers definitely play a part. Uh the
- 5:07Speaker 4: sacks play apart, and that's everybody. You know, that takes
- 5:10Speaker 4: all eleven. That's the offensive line, the running backs, the
- 5:12Speaker 4: tight end, the quarterback, and the receivers to understand the
- 5:15Speaker 4: timing of the play. So as a whole, as a team,
- 5:18Speaker 4: you know, we we expect better, We expect to play better,
- 5:21Speaker 4: we expect to to play to the standard.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Uh, and we will.
- 5:24Speaker 4: And so you know this is uh, you know, as
- 5:27Speaker 4: as I told the team, I'd much rather get knocked
- 5:29Speaker 4: down in the sixth round than get knocked out in
- 5:32Speaker 4: the twelfth round. And so we got to get up
- 5:34Speaker 4: off the mat. We got to get back to work
- 5:36Speaker 4: the way we know how to do it, which we
- 5:38Speaker 4: will do. We'll fight like crazy and and we'll make
- 5:42Speaker 4: this a twelve round fight for the season. And UH
- 5:44Speaker 4: looking forward to the opportunity to go do that, uh,
- 5:47Speaker 4: to prove what we're capable of. As far as this
- 5:49Speaker 4: week's game, it's a very good Vanderbilt team. And uh,
- 5:53Speaker 4: these guys are you know, Coach Lee's done a tremendous
- 5:55Speaker 4: job building this program.
- 5:57Speaker 5: He's in year four.
- 5:59Speaker 4: They've done a nice job of one building within but
- 6:02Speaker 4: also in the transfer portal. They're playing really stout run
- 6:06Speaker 4: defense that they're they're committed. They're disciplined to defending the run,
- 6:09Speaker 4: they create turnovers on the flip side. They run the football,
- 6:14Speaker 4: they burn a lot of clock. They lead the conference
- 6:16Speaker 4: in time of possession, they lead the conference in third
- 6:18Speaker 4: down conversion rate. They only have two turnovers on the year,
- 6:22Speaker 4: which leads the SEC. And you know, they're really efficient
- 6:27Speaker 4: and so they play really, really good, complimentary football. And
- 6:30Speaker 4: with that, you know, you've got to maximize your possessions offensively.
- 6:34Speaker 4: You got to make your plays count. You can't count
- 6:36Speaker 4: your plays. You know, we had seventy six plays the
- 6:38Speaker 4: other night. When Alabama went to Vanderbilt a few weeks ago,
- 6:41Speaker 4: they ran forty eight plays. I think their next opponent
- 6:44Speaker 4: ran fifty two. I think ball State ran sixty. And
- 6:47Speaker 4: so you've got it. You've got to be really efficient
- 6:49Speaker 4: with your plays offensively. And we got a fight like
- 6:52Speaker 4: crazy to stay on the field extending our drives on
- 6:55Speaker 4: third down. And then we got to find a way
- 6:57Speaker 4: defensively to get them off the field, which probably means
- 7:00Speaker 4: we got to win on first down. We got to
- 7:02Speaker 4: do a great job on third down and try to
- 7:04Speaker 4: minimize the third and short opportunities that they get. So
- 7:08Speaker 4: very good football team quarterbacks a heck of a player.
- 7:11Speaker 4: He definitely is the straw that stirs the drink for
- 7:13Speaker 4: them in the run game and in the past game.
- 7:16Speaker 4: He's definitely infused a competitive, winning mentality into that team.
- 7:21Speaker 4: And so we've got we've got to work cut out
- 7:23Speaker 4: for him and defending him as well as their entire team.
- 7:26Speaker 5: So it should be a heck of a matchup for us.
- 7:28Speaker 1: All right, Let's get to a couple of questions before
- 7:30Speaker 1: we get to the break. First of all, it's peak
- 7:31Speaker 1: at the quarterbacks. He was asked about Diego Pavia later,
- 7:35Speaker 1: the Vanderbilt quarterback, and we have plenty of time to
- 7:37Speaker 1: talk about that young man as the week goes forward.
- 7:40Speaker 1: But a lot of folks are fixated, obviously on the
- 7:42Speaker 1: quarterback play at Texas, and that includes Quentin Ewers, who,
- 7:47Speaker 1: of course, was pulled out of the game in that
- 7:52Speaker 1: second quarter when he was having struggles. As Sark told
- 7:57Speaker 1: the television reporters and told us after afterwards on the
- 7:59Speaker 1: post game, he wanted to settle him down a little bit,
- 8:02Speaker 1: and having calmed down a little bit, and then he
- 8:04Speaker 1: went back in and played better after that. So he
- 8:06Speaker 1: was asked, is it a difficult situation. Is it delicate?
- 8:11Speaker 1: How you handle that to keep a guy from losing confidence?
- 8:13Speaker 1: In short, how you handle a situation like that A
- 8:16Speaker 1: couple of things. I think Quinn definitely can play better.
- 8:19Speaker 4: We've got to continue to work his pocket presence and
- 8:22Speaker 4: making sure that he's capitalized, capitalizing on the premier looks
- 8:25Speaker 4: when we get them. Why we're calling plays and we
- 8:28Speaker 4: get those shots to take them.
- 8:29Speaker 5: But I also think we need to play better around him.
- 8:31Speaker 4: You know, our offense isn't about one player playing well.
- 8:35Speaker 4: It's about all eleven playing well. And I don't think
- 8:38Speaker 4: we've been at our best from a from a totality standpoint. So, yes,
- 8:42Speaker 4: Quinn needs to needs to play better, and I believe
- 8:45Speaker 4: that he will. I thought he played a better second half. Again,
- 8:47Speaker 4: the game was a little bit out of whack, But
- 8:49Speaker 4: I think we need to be better around him as well.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Up Front, the run, game, receivers, creating separation, getting open
- 8:55Speaker 4: all that needs to needs to needs to improve.
- 8:57Speaker 2: All right, So that's about his performance. What about his
- 8:59Speaker 2: coin confidence?
- 9:04Speaker 4: Well, I think it's him understanding that we have confidence
- 9:07Speaker 4: and belief in him. Again, we were very clear of
- 9:10Speaker 4: why we made that move at the end of the
- 9:12Speaker 4: second quarter of of him kind of recalibrating him, getting refocused,
- 9:18Speaker 4: giving him a chance to get into the locker room
- 9:19Speaker 4: so that we could visit.
- 9:21Speaker 5: And again, I thought it was an effective.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Move for for him, for us as a team. But
- 9:26Speaker 4: we got we got a ton of respect for Quinn,
- 9:28Speaker 4: a ton of confidence in Quinn.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Uh.
- 9:30Speaker 4: I think he's gonna come out and play really good
- 9:32Speaker 4: football for us here the second half of the season.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Okay, all right, And then I was asked for an
- 9:37Speaker 1: update on injured guys, most notably Andrew mccoba.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Yeah, he'll be uh, you know, he'll be questionable this week.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Were Yeah, he'll be uh you know, he'll be questionable
- 9:48Speaker 4: this week. We're gonna we're gonna have to monitor him.
- 9:52Speaker 4: You know, we do have the buye after this game
- 9:55Speaker 4: before we come back, and I think I believe we
- 9:57Speaker 4: played Florida after that, so you we're just gonna to
- 10:00Speaker 4: turn closely this week. But but again, I'm not going
- 10:03Speaker 4: to put him back out there if he's not ready
- 10:05Speaker 4: to go, knowing that I can have a couple more
- 10:07Speaker 4: weeks after this to get him healthy. A little similar
- 10:10Speaker 4: to the Quinn situation, I guess. So we'll look at it.
- 10:12Speaker 4: We'll see what it looks like. But you know, again,
- 10:15Speaker 4: it's nothing that is, you know, season ending, anything of
- 10:18Speaker 4: that sort.
- 10:19Speaker 2: So there's at least that part of it anyway, is
- 10:21Speaker 2: good news.
- 10:22Speaker 1: All right, Well, we'll hear more from Sark throughout the
- 10:24Speaker 1: course of the program in all.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Three hours this afternoon.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Up next, we have today's edition of Inconceivable as we
- 10:29Speaker 1: continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of
- 10:31Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app.
