Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Liz Gregory: Gloriavale Leaver's Trust Founder on Gloriavale's school remaining open
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Remember how Gloriavale's school was meant to close Friday. Well,
- 0:02Speaker 1: there's been a change of heart. The school's remaining open
- 0:05Speaker 1: for now. A July Aero report found the school failed
- 0:08Speaker 1: to make three of eight registration criteria that closed it down.
- 0:12Speaker 1: The board, though, has sought a judicial review of the decision.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It now remains open until that is heard. Liz Gregory
- 0:19Speaker 1: is the founder Gloria Vale Leaders Trust. On the Secretary
- 0:23Speaker 1: for Education joins us now, Liz, good morning, good morning,
- 0:27Speaker 1: Good to have you on the show. You're obviously worried
- 0:29Speaker 1: about this. You don't want the school to be open.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We're not quite sure at this stage how long it
- 0:33Speaker 1: might be.
- 0:35Speaker 2: No, that's right. The reality is the Ministry of Education
- 0:39Speaker 2: followed due process the safety of the children of paramount.
- 0:44Speaker 2: That's one of the statutes embedded into New Zealand law.
- 0:48Speaker 2: It was under those reasons that the school was closed,
- 0:51Speaker 2: and a Gloria Ofval obviously feel that the process hasn't
- 0:54Speaker 2: been followed. So a judicial review doesn't mean that the
- 0:57Speaker 2: court can overturn the decision. Means they examine the process
- 1:01Speaker 2: that the Ministry went through to close it. So, yeah,
- 1:04Speaker 2: it just seem interesting to find a judge that would
- 1:06Speaker 2: be willing to keep it open. In the meantime, given
- 1:09Speaker 2: it was around safety issues, it does.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Seem a little odd. What are the kids going to do?
- 1:14Speaker 1: I mean, that's assumed that it goes through and that
- 1:16Speaker 1: the judicial review is over and the school closes, where
- 1:19Speaker 1: do all the kids go?
- 1:22Speaker 2: The Ministry of Education we're obviously looking into a plan
- 1:25Speaker 2: to rehome or re school the children. They had mentioned
- 1:30Speaker 2: publicly the idea of a hub, a gloru of our
- 1:33Speaker 2: hub that would involve. Initially it was going to be
- 1:35Speaker 2: some takura, so that's our correspondence. School was going to
- 1:39Speaker 2: just pick up the slack making sure the children were
- 1:41Speaker 2: enrolled legally in a school that was going to be
- 1:45Speaker 2: for the first term at Glory of our sites, with
- 1:48Speaker 2: some supervision until they had the ability, I guess to
- 1:51Speaker 2: put some prefabs or make provision for buildings onto another
- 1:56Speaker 2: local school, so they have local schools in the gray
- 2:00Speaker 2: Mouth region. They were about forty minutes away, but that's
- 2:04Speaker 2: not a distance that a lot of other kids don't
- 2:07Speaker 2: travel already to get to school. So there was going
- 2:10Speaker 2: to be an option there, I guess for the children
- 2:12Speaker 2: to go be legally educated and then make decisions around
- 2:17Speaker 2: their future. I mean the parents wouldn't be forced to
- 2:19Speaker 2: send the children there like anyone in New Zealand. They're
- 2:22Speaker 2: welcome to take offers or two's educational provisions for their
- 2:28Speaker 2: children and a variety of sometings.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Liz, appreciate your update this morning. Thank you, Liz Gregory,
- 2:32Speaker 1: founder of the Glory of Our Leaders Trust with us Live.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Their school was meant to be closed from today but
- 2:38Speaker 1: will stay open.
